Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Funny thing: the only dish I didn't care for was the one I ordered. The rigatoni, sausage, and broccoli was that, and only that. It seemed like someone forgot to finish making it. The meatballs and calamari for an appetizer were delicious. The place is awesome and our server was more than outstanding.

On warm days/nights they completely open up to take full advantage of the great weather. Does not appear to be bad table, whether it be outside, inside or at the bar. I dined on white sangria and the Italian sausage and roasted pepper pizza. Both incredibly delicious! While I sat at the bar for immediate seating, they do offer to text you when a table is ready. Cool use of technology without having use a clunky pager or stay within a specified distance. 2 thumbs up from me and would absolutely return when in the area.

This is the best pizza place in KC if your looking for traditional Italian pizza. And it won't kill your pocket book. On the plus side, they have great wines and beers. I love their Estrella Damm and it's the only place in town that serves it. You should try their spicy meatball pizza and their fortuna pizza. Both are off the charts good. My wife and I typically have left over with just the pizza. If your in the happy hour mood, try the sampler player with some wine and beer! Can't go wrong!
(5)Kathy M.
Our first time here and it happened to be for a wine tasting event they were hosting. They did an amazing job with this event. We received 4 tastings, a full glass of wine and appetizers. After trying their appetizers, we've now put this restaurant on our must go to list. The pizza and the meatballs were outstanding! We will definitely return.
(5)Kolbie J.
I have been twice now, first time I tried the chicken parm and some whiskey drink off of their drink menu. I am a chicken parm connoisseur, so I wasn't shocked when I wasn't the biggest fan.. It takes a lot to impress me. Since they are known for their pizza I decided the second time around to go for it. Got one half spicy meatball and half fontina. Neither of which were very impressive but I did like the crust!

Coal Vines is the best local Plaza bar/restaurant for food/service and hospitality. I can't say enough about the friendly accommodating staff including Stephanie, Marcus, and the rest of the staff. Food choices are always good- and the half price wine is back. late night food options ( from 10-12 ) on weekends would be a great addition. I love the option of open dining with the french doors they have.....lot's of regulars and by the way, a great place to watch local sports in the bar area.
(5)Bart H.
Excellent service staff!!!! Fun, attentive, relaxed. Very nice atmosphere (for a while). Salmon TarTar was rich and satisfying. One BIG complaint: A DJ on a Friday night at a restaurant built on the ambiance of The Plaza, sophisticated menu items and a wine theme meant for grown ups?! Obnoxiously loud and intrusive noise level in a relatively small venue that only drew glares from the crowd of 30-40. BIG mistake. We will be back for the food and friendly staff, if only certain that the evening will not be ruined by Techno-Static.
(4)Kim S.
Excellent meatballs, possibly best I've had! Loved the wine list, amazing white pizza and the service was outstanding! First time here, def won't be our last!! Great atmosphere. And i highly recommend the salmon blt-whoa.

We have enjoyed many happy hours and dinners at Coal Vines, which have always included their pizzas. We love their pizza, don't get me wrong, but I wanted to update my review to explain that they also do a great job on their Sunday brunch. We took an out of town friend to show off the Plaza area while enjoying a laid back brunch. The menu offerings for brunch range from salads and sandwiches to pizzas and entrees. Two of us ordered the chicken Caesar salads and hubby ordered the salmon sandwich. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The fries that accompanied my hubby's sandwich were definitely shared by all (good thing his mom taught him to be a good sharer)! I guess that I never would have really thought of Coal Vines as a brunch option, had we not wandered by it and saw that it was packed with Sunday diners. They also offered a great brunch drink menu. I can now highly recommend Coal Vines for brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner! And a good friend had her daughter's rehearsal dinner in the private cellar downstairs and was thrilled with the event all around. Sounds like we finally have a winner on this corner of the Plaza!
(5)Sophia Z.
Best pizza in KC! All of the pizzas we have tried have been delicious - the sausage, the meatball, fortuna and their margherita pizza were all great! Personally the sausage one was my favorite, but we liked all of them! Their pizza is a cut above places like Waldo's pizza where it's cheap and good; This place is a tad more but so much better- it's more sophisticated all around. We can't go back to Waldo's after coming here.
(5)Paula G.
AlWAYS good! This is my fifth time to eat here and today did not disappoint me! We called ahead for reservations, they were more than accommodating! Everyone at our table (9 of us) ordered something different, no one complained! We start with mimosas, yum! I have never swayed from the Captain Crunch French toast because I LOVE IT! It's crunchy and tender and just the right amount of sweet! Today I had the Eggs Benedict, they were really, really delicious and the side of potatoes were perfect! The wait staff work as a team and are very pleasant! I highly recommend this place for breakfast/brunch! As an added bonus, they have outdoor seating as well!
(5)Christina M.
I've been here there times now and it's been great all three times. They have been "out of something" each time I've been, but there are plenty of choices. The first time I went, we had brunch. I ordered a salad and it was fantastic. The second time we ordered several pizzas to share with the table. Everyone raved about the White Truffle Pizza (it was really yummy!). This last time we went for brunch again (peach mimosas, delicious) and our waitress was hilarious. It is definitely a place I look forward to going again.
(4)Kevin R.
My favorite place on the Plaza! The pizza is amazing, the wine spectacular, the staff outstanding, and we just had the BEST calimari on the planet!
(5)Billie H.
This is a happy hour gem!!! Besides drink specials, you will find a great selection of appetizers for $4 or $5. I had salmon tartare that was amazing. Smoked salmon, goat cheese, avocado, and pomegranate vinegarette, just amazing. It is serving with some great wonton chips. For $5 you will be more than satisfied. My friend tried the chicken sliders and was very pleased. She said the chicken was nice and juicy, not dry. The order came with three sliders and a side of fries. Again, only $5 during the happy hour. She had enough left to take home for another meal. The service was ok. Due to diet restrictions I couldn't drink and was limited on what I ate. Spending only $5 made me feel bad as that wouldn't equate to much of a tip. Although the service could have been a little more attentive, it wasn't bad and I left a generous tip based on the bill. With the great prices, the servers really deserve to be taken care of, unless they just do a bad job, but that didn't seem to be the case from anyone. The owner or manager came by often to make sure our water was filled. Another gentleman stopped while I was waiting for my friend to see if I wanted anything as I waited. My only real complaint is that some upkeep is needed. When I pulled out my chair to sit down, the cloth seat was terribly stained. I looked around and noticed most were. They definitely need replaced and just gave a dirty feel to the place. I will be back. This is one of the best happy hours in the city!!! Try the tartare!!!
(4)Michelle F.
If you love spicy then the spicy meatball pizza is the way to go. One of my favorite pizzas I have ever had. I also love the ambiance as well as the excellent service. The happy hour is also a great deal. One of my favorite restaurants on the plaza.
(5)Ashley F.
My family and I have never been disappointed here. I used to live and work right across the street, and it was such a treat to have a delicious yet modest restaurant nearby. It was comfortable enough for business lunches and dinners, too. Of course, I'd most recommend the pizza, but they have excellent salads too.
(5)Tracy P.
Never been here before. Server never asked if we had so we had to ask a bunch of questions. Overall server was nice and pleasant. Food--had the bruschetta trio--it was horrible. Nothing like the way it should be. You got 3 cups of glop and 4 pieces of smaller size toasted bread. When asked if we wanted more bread we said yes---which we had assumed was free since we were asked if we wanted more. Granted it was only $1.50 but still. Pizza was really good tho. So that made up for the horrible appetizer. However wouldn't go back again
(3)Natalie S.
So it took a few years to try it again and it wasn't much better. This time I ordered the gluten free crust and, again, it was soggy towards the middle. It was a simple Margherita so it shouldn't be soggy. The wine was good and the waitress was very nice. It is still a bit loud but the atmosphere is nice. I think there are so many better places for pizza in KC. I think two times will be it for me.
(2)Mulu A.
Splendid, perfect size for a one on one. Normal wait time, we decided to go on a walk around the plaza. Not too loud and the service is prompt and friendly. Will totally come again!
(5)Sarah F.
They get an extra star. You may be asking why? Why do they get an extra star? The answer is: one very nice and customer oriented hostess! We decided valentine's day this year would be pizza and a movie, at home relaxing. When I think good pizza appropriate for such an occasion I think Coal Vines! We were there pretty early and figured we would have a drink while we waited for our to go order, but the bar was packed, and of course all the tables were reserved for people who were actually going out for valentine's day (good choice all you coal vines's valentine daters!) The hostess checked the reservations and found us a nice table for two that wouldn't be there for 30 minutes, more than enough time to grab a drink and wait for our order! The pizza itself, amazing as always, but the hostess went above and beyond!
(5)Scott R.
The pizza was excellent. The wine list was excellent. The atmosphere was casual and laid back. Overall a wonderful evening out. All four in our party agreed this was a spot we will visit again. Only negative was the cheese plate appetizer was lacking though. Small sampling if cheese did not match the meats.
(4)Debie R.
Has lunch at Coal Vines today with my mom. We ordered the White Special pizza but what we got was the Margherita pizza. Not having been here before we didn't know the difference and ate it anyway. It was delicious. The waitress was super nice and quick on the refills. I'll probably try it again but make sure I actually get the pizza I ordered.
(4)Ann W.
Mimosas! Really strong cheap mimosas by the pitcher! Is there really anything else you need to know? Ok, if you must know more, I have never eaten anything here except for Sunday brunch, but I am in love with this restaurant. One of our favorite Sunday morning activities is coming to Coal Vines for a tasty breakfast (try the salmon and goat cheese app...it's incredible!) followed by lots of mimosa-induced stumbling around the Plaza to various locales/activities. The service at Coal Vines is fast and friendly. Seating is just a tad bit cramped, but we've never had to wait for a table for brunch.
(5)Jack W.
This is a very small, romantic setting with low lighting - perfect spot for a first date! Great wine selection and the white pizza we had was one of the best pizzas I've ever had! The Manager was previously with Kona for years and one of the nicest women on the Plaza food scene. The live music was a great touch to the ambiance. Overall: Great food/people/environment = highly recommend.
(4)Kendell W.
Ordered the ceasar and a pie. The ceasar was decent, fresh, had a bit too much anchovy flavor for my taste, but not bad. Got a margharita pie with prosciutto - really nice flavor, great tasting thin crust and a solid sauce. Good service, nice price for a higher end pie.
(3)Nicholas P.
Amazing and attentive staff. The best pizza I have ever had. I asked what they would recommend and we did the Bolognese Pizza. I wouldn't consider it but I'm sure glad I took their advice.
(5)Christy P.
We were there on a Thursday, mainly to see a friend of ours who was playing from 6-9, and were pleasantly surprised. It's a pretty small place, which is too bad because I really liked it. Great laid-back atmosphere, reasonably priced wine and great pizza. Also had the garlic bread which was quite tasty - not too cheesy like some can be. I would definitely come back (especially if my friend is playing!).
(4)Cathleen W.
I went here for a company party so we were down in what they call the wine cellar. We started with appetizers that consisted of an antipasto plate, bacon wrapped shrimp and meatballs. These were all very good. The meatballs were moist and juicy; and everyone raved about the shrimp. The antipasto plate was good as well. I would recommend ordering any of these appetizers. Next came the Cesar salad, penne pasta with vodka sauce and pizza. Everything was great except the pizza which was done cold.
(3)Karen P.
Kansas City is lucky that there are so many excellent pizza places all over town. Coal Vines isn't one of them. It's not bad, it's just nothing special. If you want truly special, different pizza, as well as traditional favorites, I'd recommend Spin or Minsky's. Our service was great, though- our waitress couldn't have been nicer or more attentive.
(3)Troy D.
In my last review, a year and a half ago, I said something just wasn't clicking about this place. There's still something not clicking here. Went to Sunday brunch with friends recently... The food was decent, the waitstaff friendly, but again... There's something unquantifiable missing here. Was it ok? Sure. Was it a place I'd return to regularly? I just can't say yes to that one.
(3)Jess I.
Coal Vines is one of my favorite restaurants. Great food, great atmosphere, and excellent customer service! Everytime time I visit, Johnny (the manager) is very friendly and goes out of his way to make sure that customers are satisfied. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!
(5)Steven F.
Excellent restaurant! From the starters (bruschetta trio) me and my friends were delighted with the food. The taste is unique and the experience followed the taste of the food. We order two pizzas, Fontina and White Special. Fontina has an incredible flavor that I can recommend. However, White Special was not the same experience it has a mild flavor compare to Fontina.
(5)William S.
12/26/2013 - @1pm - The atmosphere is inviting and we were greeted right away. The meatball appetizer and the bruschetta were delicious. We ordered two pizzas, Italian sausage and a small one with several ingredients, both were excellent. All the ingredients on the pizzas were very fresh. We ended with the cannoli appetizer which was also delicious. Great service and great food definitely a place to consider when in the plaza area.
(4)Marcus-Tor S.
Lost reservation, didn't get a good table, there were floating "Specimen" in 2 carafes of mimosa and out waitress didn't take the fact we pointed this out with the best of attitudes. 15 paying customers, and we couldn't get better than that... No Bon...
(1)Anna M.
If there were half stars, I'd probably give three and a half. I was contacted after my last experience by the owner, which was appreciated. We were given the opportunity to come back and hopefully have a better experience. Walked in on a Thursday about 6:00 and sat right down. Our server was attentive and friendly. Ordered a bottle of Simi Cabernet and the smoked salmon tartare... with extra wontons. The wine service needs work. Badly. I was actually shocked, a little... we were not shown the label, the top casing of the wine was ripped off as she sat the bottle on the table. It wasn't taken off the lip of the bottle, so wine caught on the foil when being poured. She allowed me to taste first since I ordered, but spilled wine on the table then served me a whole glass, instead of my guest first. Yikes. The table next to me had an issue with their wine... and while I understand how annoying it can be for someone to send back a perfectly fine bottle of wine, it was how the server handled the situation that I noticed. Anyway...the food service was prompt. We ordered the Margherita pizza, and scallops dinner. We were still in the middle of our appetizer when our server decided to bring over the items for the pizza - the pizza stand and seasonings... proceeded to put our appetizer (that we were still eating) on top of the pizza stand, on top of two other plates....???? Uhm, yeah no. It would have been nice if she had waited until we were finished. We were sitting at a small two person table. I took my appetizer down off the tower in front of us, handed out our plates, and removed the stand from our table so we could finish eating. The pizza came, dropped off by a server assistant/food runner, and it was really good. Crust was a little crunchy, and the flavors were very good. It was also a good size. A little overpriced, for both sizes listed on the menu (who pays $18 for a basic pizza??), but it was a good sized pizza...thankfully because the scallop dish left a little to be desired. It was scallops and shrimp (I want to say 3 or 4 of each) basically on top of a basic, dressing-drenched salad for $16...and that was it. I really appreciated the server assistants...they came by and took plates, refilled water glasses, cleared trash off the table, boxed up our food, and were very polite, prompt, professional. All in all a better experience...a little odd at times but she was at least present. Based on my two experiences here recently, I feel their servers may be a little on the young side, and a little inexperienced (or not properly trained). It feels like a restaurant like this would be better suited for the power and light area, and not the Plaza. I believe people head to the Plaza with a certain expectation...and I don't feel Coal Vines meets those expectations., I think it's a little overpriced for what you get in return. I prefer a more seasoned staff and a more extensive wine list to boot. Sorry, Coal Vines, I tried.
(3)Jack R.
My girlfriend and I visited Coal Vines today for Happy Hour. We had never been here before and had a Great experience! The food was amazing especially for the low cost of $5 and there were good drink specials as well. What I was most impressed with was the service. Our server Marisa was on top of everything, before we could even ask it was like she knew what we were thinking! One of the best service experiences I have had in all of Kansas City! I strongly recommend this place if you are looking for a great happy hour and request Marisa as your server if you want a truly divine experience! 5 stars!
(5)Brian M.
Being from Saint Louis I have had my fair share of excellent pizza, however a recent trip to Kansas City I was introduced to the greatness that is Coal Vines. Located in the Country Club Plaza neighborhood Coal Vines is a Pizza and Wine Bar makes for an great evening out. The atmosphere is very intimate, yet still maintains a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. I felt very comfortable while dining at a small candle lit table with a group of friends right outside the kitchen. Getting to watch our pizza being made by hand was a great treat. The staff was fun and friendly, they did their best to make this a great experience. Now on to the food, was great we ordered one large pizza and split it half and half. One side was a White Pizza with chicken and the other side was a more traditional pepperoni and sausage pizza. Both were amazing however the white pizza was over the top. I still can taste it, amazing. I hope to be back in Kansas City sometime again this year and will be returning.
(5)Chelsea C.
I've never been disappointed coming here. The servers are always incredibly friendly, the space is cool, and the food is amazing. And not just their pizza, although that's definitely a staple item. It's great for a date night or a night out with friends. Favorite restaurant on the plaza!
(5)Kimberly F.
My family and I were visiting Kansas City and stopped into this place on a Saturday night. My boyfriend actually proposed to me at the restaurant during the evening so we are forever grateful for accommodating to some of his requests so that the night was special! On to my overall review: It was busy and there was a wait but the food was worth it--great pizza. We took a seat at the bar while we were waiting and were appalled by the rude demeanor of one bartender. She was extremely impatient and was just out right rude at times. Nevertheless, the atmosphere and the decor of this restaurant is fun and exciting--especially with it being located in The Plaza. I really enjoyed listening to the one man show singing throughout the night--his performance really fit into the overall experience! We will definitely return--but may stay away from the bar.

My wife and I love Kansas City and the Plaza shopping area. We visit Kansas City periodically from Tulsa when we need a quick getaway with great shopping and restaurants. We try to eat wheat/gluten-free except when on vacation. Perhaps this is why the pizza tasted so good at Coal Vines. We have lunch there on St. Patrick's Day 2014. We absolutely loved the thin pie we ordered: meatballs, mushrooms, pepperoni. Our order initially came out with onions, which the waitress promptly apologized for and we had a new pizza very quickly. They have a brick oven that cooks at very high heat and imparts a great taste to the crust. We had 3 slices left and had them wrap it for the trip home. I broke my own eating rules by having the leftovers the next day at home. Good lord it was even better re-heated. Anyway the Sinatra vibe didn't bother us. It's a great little place with excellent service and our food was excellent.

First time here. Came for a conference at the basement. The food is wonderful! Had as appetizers: the pork meatballs; salmon tartar salad was very flavorful, fried calamari was good and then we came to the pizzas! The salmon filet and grilled chicken was very good and the diablo pasta was fantastic!!
(5)Monica K.
The pizza was great and they were more than willing to accommodate all of the picky people at the table sharing a pizza. The ricotta cheese was amazing. The only reason it lost a star was the mozzarella sticks really were not very good. Should have gone without them.
(4)Kate W.
Great pizza and fun place. Good brunch on Sunday! They have peach mimosas and different flavors. It's not just pizza either- there are others things too! All delicious. Highly recommend!
(5)Gurpal K.
Recommend their brunch - it is delicious. I had one of the omelets and they are very appetizing. Had their pizza for dinner and it is pretty good. Nothing different but still delicious.
(5)Amanda S.
This review is for the pleasant brunch outing on Sunday morning. I was quite nervous to go there after reading all the unpleasant reviews. But we had a Groupon to hurry up and use. I'm glad we had a reservation or we would have been waiting quite awhile for a table. Heads up...get a reservation. We were seated promptly in the back which was cooler (AC running well) and wasn't as loud as the front. The server was really friendly and super efficient with our drinks too. I normally order Bloody Marys with brunch. I was very surprised they don't have them on special. I asked the server how much they are - $8.50? I don't think so. But I did cough up $12 for a carafe of cherry limeade mimosa on special. I'm glad I did. It was a perfect summer drink. I ordered the salmon tartar and mesculin greens salad. Both had great flavor and plenty of goat cheese (love goat cheese!). The bacon vinaigrette on the salad was excellent. The layering of salmon, goat cheese and avocado was fresh but I could do without the pomegranate vinaigrette. I ended up scrapping it off. I'm glad I tried Coal Vines for brunch. It was a-ok and I put into my rotation of brunch places.
(3)Karen W.
I'm a fan of Coal Vines. I always get a pizza. They have interesting pizza combinations. I want to try it for brunch too. They've got a great location on the plaza and I enjoy sitting on the patio. Nice wine list. I know Coal Vines has had some criticism, but I've really enjoyed the food, drinks, and location. I plan to go back again!
(4)Stefani N.
Stopped by for lunch with Mr. B's family and we all had something different. Those who had the pizza really enjoyed their custom pizza. I had the grown up grilled cheese with pears (sounds weird) but it was tasty. The sandwich came with a cup of tomato basil soup and it was great for dipping. The tomato basil is more on the tart side than cream. I really enjoyed the interior, it was very cozy.
(4)Anna B.
Best customer service and happy hour on the plaza - we love coal vines and frequent here for dinner and happy hour regularly. While I don't always take the time to write reviews, their amazing customer service definitely warrants a review. We were meeting our friends with their 3 month old baby for happy hour, and another restaurant down the street basically kicked them out when they showed up with a sleeping baby in a carrying car seat informing them the restaurant wasn't "kid friendly". We headed over to coal vines and were greeted with an extremely friendly manager (Jason) and wait staff. They even picked up our first round after we explained the trouble we'd been through that evening at the nearby restaurant. We frequent restaurants at the plaza all the time, but coal vines is our favorite. In addition to the amazing food (try their white pizza with sausage!) and drinks, coal vines have unmatched appreciation for their patrons. If you go here, you won't be disappointed!
(5)Dan G.
Ducked in for some pizza and beer and we were pleased. I was still in a bit of my post bbq lunch coma hours later, so I was not as ravenous as usual. We got a spinach salad which was a nice light start. For our pizza we chose a simple veggie combo of olives, sundried tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms. The pizza came out pretty quickly and it had a great crust and a nice char to it. They also clearly pointed out the light cheese half, hers of course. Our pizza was good and just what we were looking for. We also loved the Boulevard tank 7 that we had a few rounds of. Beer and za success.

We had a nice Sunday brunch here a few weeks ago. I made reservations so we didn't have to wait long. I'm not a big Plaza fan because I don't care for the snooty/hipster crowds or the parking situation but I'm down here more times than I care to be. At any rate, I had an expired Groupon and we zoomed down in the Escort and parked in a nearby free (I do appreciate that) lot. I had an omelet of prosciutto, sausage and cheese. It was delicious but it was a bit overcooked and dry. It came with potato wedges seasoned with salt and parmesan cheese. My partner had a beautiful Margherita pizza which was SUPERB. The server was nice enough but she was very busy as the places was noisy and crowded. Normally, I don't mind a noisy, crowded place except for Sunday brunch which I like to take slowly and peacefully. Peace was not the case on this day. Which is fine. I can't criticize people for having fun and enjoying themselves, it's just that I would have preferred something quieter on this particular day so that is on me. I would definitely come back to Coal Vines. The food was good, the service was satisfactory and the price was ok.
(3)Diane S.
It must be the location because it's not the food. Had brunch with a small group of friends and I have to give them kudos for an attentive host, prompt delivery of food and let us talk and chill over a carafe of strawberry mimosas without pestering us. The food itself was just average based on the group consensus. We were disappointed that the lunch menu wasn't available in addition to the brunch menu. I had the Chicken Parmesan sliders with fries. Good but nothing to brave the traffic on the Plaza and circle for a parking spot for.
(3)Susan C.
Another "fancy" pizza joint with the same sticker shock as Waldo Pizza! Between one of my girlfriends and I, we ordered the garlic bread, ceasar salad, white pizza with sausage, pepperoni and sausage, and 2 tank 7's. Umm...all I have to say is, I bought 2 pairs of shoes over at Standard Style the same day and my total at SS was less than my tab at Coal Vines. =X. The garlic bread was cooked to perfection; the crispy bread and the cheese melted on top. Yummy. Definitely not a fan of the ricotta cheese on the pizza but overall, it was pretty good, not gonna lie.

We finally found our perfect pizza and it's 7.5 hours from home :-( Absolutely perfect pizza. Came here yesterday for happy hour and back today for pizza. The crust was perfect cracker crust. The sausage was delicious. The music is great. The wait staff was very attentive. The prices are reasonable.

not sure how to rate this place. Been here twice and dug both times but was not amazed. First time was for drinks only, and the bartender who took care of us was awesome! But the drinks are pricey for the area I feel. I live in LA where im used to upcharges on cocktails, but this is KC, i expect a bit better. Second time was for food and some beers. The pizza was inventive and fresh, I dug it for sure, but I was not overly impressed by anything, maybe I am being an asshole about the whole thing, but im just not sure what to make of this place, but its worth going

I've been here a few times and haven't been disappointed, but it didn't occur to me to review this place until I had the Penne Vodka recently. Oooh, wow, THAT is good stuff. Also, I was impressed by the management - we were seated as a party of 3 (no reservation), then a few friends said they were stopping by. It was a busy night, but they reseated us at a larger table when the others arrived. After dinner, 2 of the people in the group left and the rest of us stayed for more wine. The manager asked if we could move back to a smaller table. They were nice and accommodating about us switching tables to begin with, so we were happy to accommodate them as well. Then the manager sent over a free dessert to thank us. Love it!

My husband and I came in this past Friday with a few friends . We were luckily able to get a table in before the rush which was great because still had time to enjoy the art after. I must say even though their was no adequate parking for patrons at this restaurant our experience was still great . We were seated by the window and our server Nikki was very attentive . She let us know the pizzas may be a little behind because of how many were being served . She great wine recommendations and knowledge of the plaza . We live out south and have kids so it was great to have a server with positive recommendations of where we should go next! Food was wonderful as well! We will be back!

Maybe the best pizza in KC. Recommend the sausage and pepper combo. Read a number of negative reviews, seem to be mostly about the Brunch. They get my recommendation for best value on the Plaza.

I have visited Coal Vines on several occasions including brunch, happy hour, and dinner. I think that this is a great upscale casual place with a simple menu and very reasonable prices. They have always been super accommodating to larger groups (8-12). Brunch offers a variety of classic breakfast items and also an Italian spin with delicious breakfast pizza and calzones. I enjoy splitting the breakfast pizza with a friend. The benedicts were a big hit with the group. Another great perk of brunch are the flavored carafes of mimosas. Happy hour is a good deal with a variety of appetizers, pizzas, and wines at a discounted rate. I've never tried their actual entrees but am a big fan of the pizzas. It's hard to go wrong with pizza and wine and I think that's what makes this place good.

First time ever in KC on business and took a colleague here on a whim. Being from northeast I was not expecting much from the pizza but the atmosphere looked nice and it was half price price wine Thursday. My colleague ordered the meatball appetizer - again my expectations were low as I was raised on my Italian mothers meatballs. I tried a bite and wow was I surprised - very tast and tender and the sauce was nice. We shared the fennel crusted salmon with arugula - I love salmon and will order some form of it 70% of the time I eat out. My friend not a huge salmon fan - but he loved it as did I - the salmon was perfectly cooked medium rare, fennel crust slightly crunch and light dressing on the arugula that was a perfect match. Our waitress said the salmon is flown in regularly from Denmark - based on the quality I believe her. Lastly we ordered a pizza - half margherita and half white truffle oil for my friend. The pizza was just ok but not a terrible effort - I felt that it needed to be in the oven for 2-3 more minutes and that would have made it better. The wine selection was ok - I like having wines on the menu that I recognize but I chose an unknown Australian Shiraz blend that I really enjoyed especially for $26.00 half price. I think $52.00 might be too high for this wine but maybe a fair restaurant price would be $38.00 to $42.00. Finally the service and friendliness of the staff was off the charts. Our waitress was a little green with her knowledge of wine but she did not try to fake it and she was super friendly and attentive. The rest of the staff/management was also very customer friendly. I travel for business and my family and friends tell me I am overly critical of food quality and service when I eat out - I know what I like and I know when something is good. This place is GOOD - maybe every body does not have the same combination of outstanding food and service that I had but listen up this place is worth visiting and having your own experience - give it a shot!

Got a regular pie with sausage, and a margarita, both 18". No, I was not alone-- i was in a party of four, silly. I have to say that this has been my favorite pizza in town thus far. As a thin crust fan, they really nailed it (supple yet crispy), and didn't drown the pie in cheese, which seems to be an unfortunate American tradition. Their attention to that essential but woefully overlooked element, the sauce, was what really sold me. It was absolute tangy perfection. The Yuppy/Tourist atmosphere us really not my thing, but should I expect anything different in the Plaza? It is a $$ place, but I would pay a little extra for a well-made pie with quality ingredients any day.
(4)Grace S.
It was alright. I had the white cheese pizza, and it was pretty good. I am a big fan of cheese, any kind of cheese, so it was hard to mess up there. Service was okay, except they didn't have any sour for my whiskey sour, or any ginger for someone else's whiskey ginger, so the alcohol choices were a bit lacking. It is a wine bar though, so I guess it's forgivable. The red wine I had was pretty good. The chocolate gelato was good, and the cannolis were okay too, although the rest of my table described them as "not real cannolis" so what do I know? I'm Asian, not Italian, so the cannolis seemed alright to me. So overall, it was just okay. Three stars.
(3)Katie S.
Love the Sunday brunch - one of the best creative eggs Benedict with basil Hollandaise and prosciutto. Also the granola pancakes are amazing. Delicious! Fun friendly atmosphere.

3.5 stars. The food here is all right - 3 stars worthy, but no more. It's the ambience that bumps up my rating. It's sleek with a warm feeling inside, and if it's a nice day you can sit out on the patio. Good wine selection and service, with Sinatra playing in the background...it made for a pleasant and comfortable dining-out experience. Onto the food...entrees are very standard and safe; don't expect anything exciting. I had the baked eggplant which was undercooked and not crispy enough on the outside. The penne alla vodka was fine - no blundering mishaps but then, it's hard to screw up a pasta. The prices are similarly okay ($12-18 for most entrees) but I think you're best off ordering a pizza here. The small size is a good 10 inches and they're reasonably priced. I would not take someone here if you wanted to impress with food. But Coal Vines is overall not a bad place to get dinner if you're just wanting to eat out that night.

No happy hour here yet, but I was told they will start one next Monday. I understand that there will be no discounts on drinks, but some appetizers will be free. The sole piccata is surprisingly good, including capers and a very enjoyable light sauce. We requested no changes in the preparation and were happy with it as is. Also the price was reasonable. The pizza is advertised as being NY style. Better yet, they offer marinara pizza, which is one of the only two pizza styles certified to be historically authentic in Naples, but oddly hard to find in the US. The other "authentic" one is Margherita Pizza, which is very common in the US, but is not on the menu here. Marinara pizza contains no cheese, and Coal Vines does it reasonably well with chunks of garlic on it. Although they have whole grain pasta, they do not have whole grain pizza crust. But their crust is very good as it is, thin, and crisp. It's best to get the large one, which is only slightly more expensive than the small one, but much bigger. Have any excess boxed to go. One of their salads is prepared with the dressing already on it. If you want the dressing on the side, or a different dressing, they can't do it. Ah, yes. It is a chain (out of Dallas). Did we like it? Yes, we did. We'll be back to try the happy hour.
(4)Stephanie P.
Just so the public is aware, Coal Vines is disgusting and always will be. I know that the health department was there and that they found the salad dressing was being stored at the improper temperature. (Check my previous reviews to see the full story). You should check your reports and your facts Zachary. Also, depending on the food borne illness involved, "Symptoms can start to appear anywhere from a few hours to four or five weeks after bacteria or viruses enter the body." Don't try and act like you know what happened, you weren't there.

Closest-to-what-you'd-find-in-Italy, extra-thin, delicious pizza in Kansas City. My two complaints are: the pepperoni and chicken toppings are low quality (i.e. my guess is Hormel pepperoni and pre-packaged cooked chicken), and sometimes they go a little crazy on the volume level of their wonderful throwback ambiance music....but they make up for it by offering GLUTEN FREE PIES!!! Finally, I can bring my fiancé here! He has Celiac Disease, and I've never had the heart to bring him here only to taunt him by eating a delicious pizza he cannot have. My favorites: The Fontina, The Margherita, and the Sausage and Peppers. I think it's a great deal because you can get a delicious pizza for $18-20 which will feed you and two friends...so about $6-$7 a person.

We arrived as a party of four with 2 hours remaining until their posted closing time. At 9:45 or so, our server informs us, while we still have half of our pizza and a half bottle of wine to finish, that it's "last call for everything." We're a little shocked but no big deal, right? 30 minutes later, 2 pieces of pizza remaining and a glass of wine each left to be finished, she comes by and not-so-subtly suggests that we wrap it up. 5 minutes later the interior lights come up. Maybe it's the guaranteed business of the Plaza, but there's something incredibly off-putting and cocky about turning down business as a new restaurant and closing before your posted hours when there are still patrons finishing what they've ordered and paid for. While the interior of Coal Vines is clean and new looking, and the food is well-priced and average in quality, I won't be returning. Suppose I should've known better than to eat on the Plaza.
(1)Leah D.
Nice service and really good food. The pizzas are huge and would suggest sharing with another person or two. The sangria was also super delicious.
(4)Stuti J.
I was really disappointed with the service. I had ordered an Eggs Benedict without meat (being vegetarian) and my food came with meat in it. I only realized half way through the meal. It was not a pleasant experience. Though I have to say the French toast that they served (Coated with crispy captain crunch) was one of the best that I have eaten.
(3)Rachel A.
I've been to coal vines about 5 times - once for lunch - twice for dinner and once just for drinks. I like to give places a few shots. Overall the service leaves a lot to be desired. I try to avoid this place now when choosing where to eat on the plaza. The stand out "slap in the face" here, was on a rainy evening, close to when they had opened. My husband and I ran inside to get cover from the rain and to eat (at about 5 pm). They told us they were not open yet (even thought e doors were open, and to come back in 20 min. SERIOUSLY, did not even offer to let us sit inside while they got ready, even though we looked soaked. Not cool. There are so many good options on the plaza and sorry to say coal vines is not one of them . Also the white pizza is the first pizza I have called "disgusting" - domino's is better than that pie. If you go there - which I recommend not - get the sausage and peppers pizza - only good one there.
(2)David M.
What a boring pizza. Tried the cheese pizza. The cheese was nothing special. Sauce was plain. Not a great pie. I was looking forward to trying this place, what a disappointment.
(1)Akshay A.
Great food and awesome setting on the Plaza. I love there White Pizza and Penne Vodka with Chicken. A great place to enjoy a good evening. I would have given them 5 stars only if i didnt a not so pleasing experience one evening. The staff tried to rush us one evening and the food was under cooked, despite that it was closing time for them there was no reason to not serve the quality they stand for. overall a good place and always enjoy going there.
(4)Joi T.
Thought it had delicious pizza at a very low price. Love the atmosphere and the owner is fabs! Will return!
(5)Christina R.
Love the brunch, it is one of the best I have ever tried! The breakfast pizza is to die for and the bananas foster pancakes are too! You have to try this place!

I really should have written a review for this place a long time ago. I love Coal Vines. I have gone for dinner, for brunch and for just drinks. It is a nice vibe and the food is always great. The main thing I wanted to say though is if you are looking for a brunch spot, look no further. It is great! The food is tasty but the drinks are even better! They have awesome deals on mimosas and sangria pitchers. Additionally, they are totally cool with you taking your time and sitting at the table forever just chatting and drinking. I just think it is a great place and totally worth going for brunch.

I was born & raised in Kansas City, but spend very little time in my hometown these days. I moved to Los Angeles in 2006, and only spend a few days per year in KC. So I'm no longer "in the know" about where to go in KC for a quality dinner experience. I was in KC last weekend for 2 reasons: 1) to show my girlfriend my home-town for the 1st time. 2) to have dinner with an investor that was considering funding a new project i have in San Francisco. *I wanted both to go well. My experience at Coal Vines contributed to everything going perfectly. I arranged a Friday night dinner with my girlfriend, the potential investor, and his wife. They are Silicon Valley residents (happened to be in KC for a few other meetings that week so that's why the meeting happened there) and it turned out that they actually owned a Napa Valley winery. They were legitimately thrilled with the wine selection. One of the owners of the restaurant actually made his way to our table, introduced himself, they talked wine, I pretended to comprehend the intricacies of their conversation, everyone smiled, and my table mates became investors in my newest venture. *The owner really knew his stuff. My guests were impressed. My girlfriend loved the vibe. She was born & raised in Newport Beach, and now lives in Beverly Hills. She is no stranger to great restaurants, and the Coal Vines experience had her smiling from start to finish. It is on her short list of favorite places to eat now. The dinner ended. We all had one last drink at the bar and found the bartender to be extremely charming. He was informed, attentive, pleasant, funny, and remembered all of our 1st names. *Not that easy when you are serving dozens of different people per hour. *I worked as a bartender in college and can spot the few that have a real knack for it. They landed a gem with this gentleman. His name was Willie. The night finally ended with handshakes and even a few hugs. The Coal Vines experience was truly excellent from top to bottom. Perfect atmosphere. Pleasant music. Attractive crowd. Tasty food. Great wine selection. Fantastic staff. This blue-print would be welcome with open arms by even the most discriminating critics in Los Angeles or San Francisco. I hope they prove me right someday! Keep up the good work.

Went Friday night June 29th around 8pm. There were 4 of us but got seated fairly quickly. Husband and I had the margarita pizza our friends had the pepperoni. They were both good pizza, VERY large, good size for the prices. We had wine and martinis, listened to some guy play guitar and people watched the dinner crowd as it changed to the night time going out crowd. It's loud, pretty wooden floors, decent service. This place won't show up on Bourdain's list of places to go before you die, but we enjoyed it; Good for having tasty pizza and drinks with friends.

It was the first time for brunch ....I had the prosciutto omelette, the cheese was fabulous, and I loved it! The coffee was good, as well as the service. I hear the pizza is really good... I will go again.

Me and my boyfriend were on the Plaza looking for something new that we haven't tried before, and we found this place. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat. The place was clean and very inviting. We sat down and our server was MORE than helpful! She went over all of the specials and gave specifics on how the pizzas were made; very informative, she knew her product. When we got the pizza it was warm, and very, very, very delicious!! We got a large White Special, with half pepperoni. The slices are huge and mouthwatering! We were both full from 2 pieces, and believe me, we can eat :) The price was not bad at all for the amount we got; you can't go in expecting Pizza Hut prices, but it's definitely not expensive, especially for the Plaza. I was very impressed by the service, very down-to-earth and extremely helpful and friendly!

Coal Vines is a nice addition to the Plaza. It was a favorite destination of mine when living in Dallas, so much of it felt familiar. We ate early on Saturday, about 6:00. And before our wine arrived every seat was taken (nice to see). The pizza was as I remembered - crispy thin from the coal fired ovens. But as others have said (and I recall saying when Yelping it in DAL), the center is a bit soft. The wine selection is adequate, but most of it not to my liking. Pretty retail. Still, value for what you get is very good. That end of the Plaza can be tough going. I wish them well and will return.

Every now and then a good night's sleep leads to a point of clarity upon awakening. After sleeping on my first trip to Coal Vines last night, I had one such moment waking up today. It was this simple assessment: Coal Vines is the type of restaurant that was clearly started by businessmen looking to make a buck. One look at the safe, small menu, a glance around at the decor and the second that crooner music registered above the roar of the dining room noise and it was obvious that every decision made in the creation of the restaurant was geared toward pleasing the masses and maximizing "dollaric intake." Coal Vines has one of the safest menus I've come across in quite some time. It's a pizza joint, dressed up in man-7's and a hundred dollar shirt from Nordstrom. There's just nothing original going on here. Apps like bruschetta, mozzarella sticks and fried calamari. Six pizzas, a couple of them white. Entrees like salmon, roasted chicken and a few pastas. Two sandwiches, chicken parm and.. oh wait, the second one is also chicken parm, but with tomato, onion and arugula added called, get this, The Godfather. I can just hear the conversation that led to this restaurant concept: "You know what people like? They like fried calamari, pizza and Frank Sinatra." But here's the thing: that statement is absolutely, undeniably, 100 percent true. It's a proven business model. Coal Vines was still packed when we arrived around 9:30. It was dark and warm inside with a lot of noise--clinking of glasses, banging in the kitchen and a loud hum of laughter and conversation; it was the type of greeting that makes one feel safe about his/her restaurant decision. It told the brain that it was in a successful, popular place where people want to be and are enjoying themselves. We were taken by a polite host to our seat at the far east end of the restaurant, under the massive mural of those cliched crooners, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. For what it was, the mural was attractive enough - black and white, lit with spotlights reminiscent of the ones those two lived under during their working days - but I've had all the Martin and Sinatra I can stomach in Italian restaurants. They're played out. I shuddered slightly each time I looked up at them. After an initial glance at the menu, we decided to embrace the cliches and ordered up the mesclun salad, fried calamari and a pizza. Why not review the food that the majority of Coal Vines customers will also get? Lest readers think I'd written off the place based on my personal restaurant snobbery, I'll come right out and say all the food was good. The salad greens were lightly coated in the bacon vinaigrette. What it lacked in apples (each half had just two wafer-thin slices) and montrachet (two tiny dollops) it made up for with sweet, tangy cranberries. The calamari was nice and lightly fried, the rare kind of fried food of which I could eat lots. And the pizza, a 14-inch, thin crusted pie with red sauce, sausage and roasted red peppers, was meaty and delicious. New York-influenced, the slices were huge, almost begging to be folded Brooklyn style. Then again, it reminded me that I've had better pizza served to me on a paper plate on a street corner in Manhattan for $3.50. But it was good and I ate much of it. We washed it all down with a sugary-sweet Coppola pinot which, at $35, was a little overpriced. The wine list was chock-full of grocery store names, including several Jacob's Creek selections I'd be remiss not to point out are often available at Sunfresh in Westport for as little as $4.99, normally on sale for $6.99. There is a list of Private Cellar selections ("Bad Boys at a Good Price"), but they, too, are mega-popular labels like Silver Oak, Chateau St. Jean, Trefethen and Cakebread. Spin!, quite honestly, has a more inspired and reasonably priced wine selection. With a name that nods to wine, Coal Vines ought to step up their wine game. I left Coal Vines happy enough about the food I ate (note, they serve brunch, too, which from the sounds of Charles Ferruzza's review is a poorly done attempt to carry over the business RE:verse used to bring it at that time of day), but without motivation to return. It's a perfectly enjoyable restaurant that will appease picky, unadventurous eaters (read: the lemmings who pile into chains all across the country), but that's not what I seek out with my dining dollars. Still, its business savvy owners should feel satisfied; I'm sure it will make plenty of money.

This was my first time here, just happened to be my birthday today so I ventured down here to meet up for lunch. First off, very cool interior and atmosphere. They have changed the layout as much as they could, including adding an open kitchen. The service was friendly and attentive. A few servers were on hand, all female, all attractive. Always a bonus! The food was surprisingly good. I had a salad and we split a pizza. The pizza was more than enough for three people. The crust and toppings were very good. I guess I had in mind that this is a chain, so the food might lack a little. I was wrong, this pizza kicked ass. Love the 80's music playing in the background, the open air options for seating, and the food. One strike of a star for yet again, a typical wine list. I wish more restaurant managers and owners would venture out of their comfort zone when putting together the wine list.

I was really excited to try this place. It has a great location and the inside is really sexy with the dark wood, wine bottles and candles. There was a very nice young man that was their host and sat us right away. They have individual tables, but also seating in the back where half the table is on a bench and the other half on chairs. I'm really not a fan of this style seating because tables are usually very close together and this was the case here. I could hear the conversations of both of the parties dining on either side of us. Anyways, onto the food. The food is mainly what drove this 2 star rating. We ordered garlic cheese bread and the salmon tartare for appetizers and both were good. 3 star worthy. The mix of the smoked salmon, avocado and feta was great with the crispy chips they served. We also had a nice bottle of Malbec. We ordered the white special pizza (mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, tomatoes, garlic) and added sausage. Now, pizza is hard to screw up but this pizza was just bad. It needed salt for one, and the sausage was kind of chewy. The pizza was also topped with the WORST tomatoes, that were hard and had green centers. Why do places do this?! If people in the kitchen wouldn't consider eating those gross tomatoes, why are they put on my pizza?! I had once slice and that was it. I took home the leftovers to my fiance who usually eats anything I bring and even he wouldn't eat that pizza. We ordered tiramisu (which obviously isn't made fresh because our plate came with a large chunk of plastic wrap still on it), but it was fine. Our service was good up until the pizza came out, and then our server was MIA. She didn't even come to ask us if we wanted our check, and in fact another server took care of this for us. All in all, we may go back because their ambiance and wine selection is great, but I will steer clear of the pizza.

Good place Fun setting Food and service were both good Great pizza and a great meatball

You MUST see the magic. The renovation is spectacular. Very sophisticated ambiance, beautiful wood, red curtains, Sinatra and Dean Martin music and a beautiful black and white mural of this famous pair. Ahhhh-the food and wine. BEST pizza in KC, finally. Crispy crust, top notch toppings perfectly cooked. BIG bang for the buck. Great wines by the glass. This team knows how to run a restaurant, and cook. This will be my new haunt. Outstanding service, unpretentious. We were very lacking in KC for upscale Italian cuisine, simple and perfectly done. Thank you Coal Vines
(5)Vaughn E.
The brick oven pizza was fantastic. I shared a basic with pepperoni, add found it delicious, although just a bit pricey. The lunch atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and not loud. The decor is cool -- not overdone, flashy or overly trendy. If you didn't know it is a chain restaurant, I don't think it's the impression you'd get on your first visit.

This week has been my first time in KC, and the eating culture here is terrific. Coal Vines fits that: a simple menu centered on a solid wine list to go with the coal-oven pizza. It's not the same crispy style of pizza I expected from living in New York, but the softer, medium-thickness crust goes well with the fresh-tasting sauce. I also tried a pasta dish that had really strong flavors of spicy sausage and garlic, which I like but might be a bit much for some people. Perhaps a bigger draw than the food, though, is the incredibly beautiful crowd at this place -- on a Wednesday it was absolutely filled with gorgeous women, most of all the waitresses. If I were a single dude in KC, my coal-fired pizza expenditures would be increasing about 4,000 percent right now.

This review is soley inspired by a food allergy sufferer's complaint. I'm sure the food tastes lovely. Here's what happened: craving pizza, my friends and I chose this restaurant over a non-pizza joint because their online menu said they have gluten-free crust. It wasn't until I had ordered my tasty selection that the waitress told me they do NOT have that option. Not to be dramatic, but I was crushed. :( She said I must've been looking at their Dallas menu. I went back just now to see if that's what happened, and it turns out, that is the ONLY menu available online. If you search for the Kansas City location, you can only find the Dallas location's menu, and it's not clear at all that's what you're viewing. Boo. Better thought into that would be appreciated!

Coal Vines is a great addition to the Country Club Plaza. The prime location and now fenced in patio won my vote! Went there for brunch last weekend and enjoyed a very healthy Joe P special - consisted of egg whites, avocado, and fresh fruit for around $12.50. A tad pricey considering the portion size - but hey, maybe I'm paying for the great service and Plaza view. Next time I will try the breakfast calzone, it looked extremely hearty and delicious. My friends ordered Coal Vines Benedict and 3 egg Frittata - Sunday Quiche was in the lead for first choices but surprise, they didn't have it available yet. The eggs Benedict looked stunning and from what I could tell was tasty too. I have heard rave reviews about their brick oven pizza - I need to get to that end of the menu soon. Until then, stay tuned - and head to Classic Cup for brunch.

Love that the manager actually goes to each table to ask if everything was okay. He was very easy to talk to, and not to mention, an eye candy ;) Salmon tartare is a must. Food is decent. what I really like about this place is actually the ability to serve pizza in a wine setting, classily chic indeed ;)
(4)Lawrence N.
Coal Vine has a great wine bar atmosphere serving above-par pizza using quality ingredients. If you're a thin crust fan like me, chances are you'll like this place. Aside from being conveniently two blocks away from my abode, what draws me to Coal Vine is the atmosphere. A mural of Sinatra covers the large wall opposite the entrance. Buble and Sinatra can be heard throughout the night as guests order bottles upon bottles of wine and linger throughout the night even after finishing their pizza. Some advice, make a reservation on the weekends (if they accept them) or prepare to wait. None of the patrons here are ever in a hurry to leave.

Impressively un-impressive. So much so that I am almost a year late writing this review. If you were going to do a satire of predictable menu items this would be it. In fairness maybe my expectations were too high. After Coal Vines paid to have Re:Verse osted from the Plaza I just assumed what ever they were bringing to the table must have been pretty high end and impressive to be able to absorb that kind of expense before they even opened their doors. What ever case the menu options were un-inspiring. A detail that quickly faded into the back ground when we tasted the food. Clearly not ordering their ingredients from any reputable local purveyors. Where ever their ingredients are coming from it was clearly some place far away and only after they had sat in a wear house somewhere for quite a while. The Salmon in our appetizer was so over processed that it did not even taste like fish much less salmon. The mystery behind which was revealed several weeks later when I watched the Sysco food truck pull up in front to unload. We did not get very far on our entree as the appetizers had so much oil that our stomachs were pretty much shot. We did not request to go boxes. The staff was attentive timely and kept up with the pace, but our server was not able to make a wine recommendation which raised an eye brow since they market them selfs as a pizza and wine bar. Normally I don't give a wit about decore, but was given pause to see the absurd amount of work and expense they went to replace Re:Verse's trendy decore with cheap wood veneer and fake brick wall coverings. Its one thing to go this route in the burbs when you have nothing to work with, but why spend so much to tear out a nice space just so you can replace it with cheesy, fake, and cheap?

Yummy brunch, the coffee was a little strong but that's okay. We had really great service, We started with the smoked Salmon tartar. I had the Coal vines Benedict (arugula, prosciutto, roma tomatoes & basil hollandaise) for 9$ it was really good. my husband had the Nova scramble 9smoked salmon, mascarpone & chives) it was also good. Add a couple of mimosas great way to start a Sunday.

Where do I start? This place has so many problems, it would be boring to list them. We were prepared for less than great food having read some of the reviews on here, but there was a Groupon involved so we went to be amused by how awful it would be. Let me tell you, Coal Vines did not disappoint. They even had a little something extra: a crazy, malicious busboy. We made up stuff to ask him for just to see what he would do. This review is for brunch and the brunch menu. We will never go back for that mess. However, the pizzas around us did not look bad and I MIGHT try one at the bar if forced. Don't wait for that review though. Anybody who gives this place more than three stars does not know food or anything about the industry.

Do not waste your time or money on their Sunday brunch. They have horrible coffee and bland food. I saw a Roasterie thermos at the front door, but if it was Roasterie coffee, they are definitely brewing it incorrectly. It was very watered down and burnt. Do not get their French toast unless you like the taste of the fried french toast sticks you can get in the freezer section of your local grocery store. If you're looking for brunch, go to First Watch instead --- cheaper, great food, and amazing coffee!

Had a groupon for Sunday Brunch. They were very accommodating although we did not have reservations. Service was slow - maybe they didn't expect such a crowd??? Or maybe just understaffed due to other reasons??? The food was definately worth the wait but even I don't like to wait that long most of the time. The Nova scotia scramble was a perfect blend of scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and mascarpone cheese. My husband tried the Coal Vine Benedict and undoubtedly one of the best I've tasted. The hollendaise sauce was light and it did't smother the eggs. We ordered a blueberry pancake on the side. I thought it had a light crunch to it that was rather nice but the thickest part of the pancake was a bit gooey and it didn't have very many blueberries in it. Although the food was really good, the worst part was they brought my husband's food and the pancake and I had to wait even longer for mine. If the entire table is not ready to be served, then don't serve any of the food. At least one of the owners saw this and questioned it. Hopefully they will fix this problem.

Cool place, great atmosphere. I love coal fired pizza, and this place delivered. It didnt blow me away, but it was pretty solid. I plan on returning.

Just didn't care for it. The food, atmosphere and service were average at best. Made me miss ReVerse!

Ok I understand mediocre and I get overpriced but I'm always astounded when I find them together..another Groupon fiasco Coal Vines Brunch...first of all the web site lies...describes a pancake and omelet station with lots of good "you choose" ingredients...not there instead my son got one pancake choice. 1 "count it" 1 (one) thin banana pancake...9.00..Really, 1 pancake for 9 bucks No one else at the table did any better. Brunch was served on small Tapas plates...you will go home hungry..food just mediocre...rip off portion...lack luster service...I made the mistake to ask for some toast to complement my cold omelet and skimpy fried potatoes and got a small pre-buttered English muffin, no jelly, jam or honey...and to rub salt in the wound they charged me 3.00...Really!!!! I've never had the Pizza here but can it really be much better..Thanks for ruining Easter Coal Vines.

Went to Coal Vines for lunch with a friend and I must say that while I was pleased with my experience that I was not overly impressed. The patio area is quite nice, small and quaint. I ordered the grilled cheese and herb fries off of the menu, and although the grilled cheese was good it seemed a lot like something that I could easily whip together with a George Foreman grill. The fries, oh those fries, they were so good! Our server was very friendly without being overbearing which is always nice too! Overall a good experience and one worth revisiting, but not one that absolutely blew me away.

The dominant memory I have of my evening at Coal Vines is salt. Excessive amounts of salt. Walking by, I had high hopes for this place, but..... we were seated quickly on a Friday evening, which was great. As we looked around the decor was half cheesy and half nice- I mean, a huge Rat Pack photo on the wall? Eesh. The large glass windows, open kitchen, and brick walls made it super loud as well, so the atmosphere was a combo of Italian-American stereotypes (Rat Pack on the sound system as well) and loudness. I'm not cranky about noise, but I like to talk to my dinner companions and not get a sore throat. Still, I was in a good enough mood to overlook this, and our server was fast and friendly. The wine menu was ok, and the glasses we ordered were good. We started with Calamari, which is where the sodium overload began. The dish was medium temperature (serve it hot, please!), and the calamari itself was medium quality- a tad chewy. Meh. I ordered the Lemon Sole, and my husband the Anchovy Pizza. The Sole was good enough, slightly overcooked in an average lemon sauce, but nothing special, and the side of greens was crazy loaded with salt. Seriously, the sodium content of our meal was likely on par with fast food. What's up hypertension? They must have added salt to the pizza as well, which is a huge mistake with anchovies- they are already super salty. Having said that, everything tasted ok and was palatable, just disappointing. We tried the Tiramisu for dessert, which was adequate, if not a bit mushy. If they could tone down the volume and tone down the salt this would be a three, but there are just too many good restaurants in KC to return to this one.

Service was great and food was amazing. We will be back!

Everything I tried here that wasn't a liquid I would never have again. That said, I am hopeful that the dishes at Coal Vines are better than what I experienced. I went there for dinner with a couple friends and was underwhelmed by the pasta dish and shrimp and scallop salad that I shared. The meatball pizza we tried was okay, though not for me. Maybe a fish dish or a simple margherita pizza would be better here. The ambiance was great and I love that the windows open up to let in a summer breeze.

I have only been to this place once but my experience was so bad I refused to go back. My food was awful but what my husband ordered was pretty good. My waitress was a bit of an airhead but she was nice. The tables are very close together which made me very uncomfortable. The staff could hardly walk by without touching you. I don't think this place in a complete loss I just think they should change some things.

Great pizza, great wine, great price! Love this place anytime.

I visited Coal Vine's with a good friend who knows the owners. Of course, it is always fun to go to a place expecting the best service. But to be fair we did not bump into the owner until the end of our meal. So for that I can promise this review is not compromised. I was there on a Saturday night and the place was packed. This is a good spot for a date-night...dark, cozy atmosphere with several two top tables. We spent 20 minutes at the bar waiting for a table to open up, which was fine by me. It allowed us to catch up while we enjoyed a pre-dinner glass of wine. For dinner we started with the calamari. To me, fried calamari is all pretty much the same. But here they add in fried zucchini, which was really yummy. For the entrée we shared a pizza. It was plenty large for two people. We had a white pizza topped with mushrooms, garlic and prosciutto. YUM. Like I said - this pizza was plenty big for two people who had already consumed an appetizer. But it was so delicious that we finished every last piece. The crust was charred just enough to give it a nice crunchiness to accompany the soft center. And the toppings were so fresh. While we dined I was able to spy on several of the nearby tables. I stole a few glances at some of the entrée dishes and they all looked so amazing. I cannot wait to go back!

The pizza prices were good. I had the Bolognese pizza...it was really good. The price difference between small and large is a $1. Wines are overpriced, no happy hour specials. New York style crust, fold it over and eat it like a sandwich. Not thin and crispy like I'd prefer. Nice atmosphere overall. I was really entertained by this old guy hitting up on a Blexican gal. WOW!

Definitely a new pizza fave in town. Smaller wine list than I expected since wine shares billing on the signage, but lots of inexpensive choices which is about right for pairing with pizza. The atmosphere seemed nice, but casual at the same time. Simple menus, (literally, they were just laminated card-stock) and the option of outdoor seating make this a weekday go-to for me.

Coal Vines is a nice addition to the Plaza dining scene, with an intimate wine-bar atmosphere and large windows that open up to the sidewalk during pleasant weather. I sampled the Panzanella Salad, the White Special Pizza and the Sausage and Peppers Pizza. My only complaint is on the tomatoes, which were in the Panzanella and sliced atop the White Special. They were sub-par, hard and tasteless. Maybe that's more the fault of this time of year than that of the restaurant, but other restaurants splurge on local and/or heirloom, which really amps up the taste and texture level. I love a thin crust, though, and coal-fired pizza cooks up thin, crisp and delicious. The White Special had some fabulous fresh garlic - great when you're with your parents, definitely wouldn't go for it on a date - and the Sausage and Peppers was very flavorful. We had a very knowledgeable and helpful server, no complaints on the Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra soundtrack, and I enjoyed my accompanying glass of wine. There are a lot of great pizza options in Kansas City, but I'll happily add Coal Vines to my rotation.

Great atmosphere to have a girls night out or a date night. With the dark wood, dim lights and plush dark curtains it is the perfect place to enjoy a great glass of wine. Delicious pizza and salmon tar tar

Great food. Tasty, hand-spun, New York-style pizzas. Awesome salmon tare tare. Great wine selection. Busy on the weekend. Great service.

Another great place on The Plaza with a good atmosphere, good food, and a good wine list. A perfect place to bring a casual date, a girl's night out dinner, or late drinks.

A new place with a new vibe. I love the decor and atmosphere at this new plaza restaurant. Their high end Italian food is a must try but the brick pizza oven was amazing. You will love it all.

Great new spot that at first had me upset to see reverse leave but what a great change it has turned out to be. The vibe and friendliness of the staff bring a whole new positive and friendly feeling to the whole plaza. Food is outstanding especially for the price. U can go in have some of their pizza or wine and dine clients with their Italian cuisine. They have one of the largest and diverse wine selections around which the staff or even the owners will help you pair your food choice. When it warms up I can't wait to dine there with large windows open or on the deck

Fabulous pizza! Had the white special with pepperoni and sausage. $5 wines on happy hour.

I am not one to eat out much, but given the opportunity, Coal Vines is one of my favorite places to enjoy a long dinner at. First enticed by knowing the Head Chef, Thomas Stack is wonderful, I took a friend who was moving out of Kansas City for dinner there. It was fun to get dressed up fancy trendy style and I started at the bar with a great reasonably priced bottle of CabSav chosen by the bartender Willy who is known for his outgoing personality and special way with people. The wine was very good. I loved the atmosphere at Coal Vines. After a great dinner and two bottles of wine, I found myself feeling full, not stuffed, and drunk on the fancy atmosphere that is combined with a large front staff who are all there to help out at any table. On that note though, I did have one complaint, the waitress. She was quick to let us know she was working a double and was so tired (welcoming feel-not so much). We ordered the Salmon Tartar as an appetizer and it was delicious. The description of the appetizer on the menu was vague, and when I asked her what it was, she said "oh you know, it's really good". Clearly I did not know, that is why I askedand though she was right about it being really good, we ordered not knowing what was in it and my friend was exposed to avocado which he is allergic to. To top it off, when he told the waitress, she said, " your allergic to avocado? How weird!" and walked off. This is when we gave up on her decided to make fun of what an idiot she was, and focus on the good things, the great food atmosphere, and the awesome water guy and buser who was on top of it all night. We wished we could have tipped him instead of her, being that he was watching out for not just us but all the people in the place. Having been in the service industry many years, I was not about to let her spoil all the great things about Coal Vines, because she was cute and thought she could get by without knowing the menu. The same week I suggested to go back with a few others and our waitress rocked. She was knowledgeable and knew the menu- phew! Again, I enjoyed great wine, a spinach salad which even after splitting was a great portion, pizza, and topped it off with a yummy dessert. I was pleasantly surprised by the fair prices, and enjoyed everything I ate there. I highly recommend this as a great place to take a date or catch up with an old friend, or meet someone new. The busy atmosphere and nice music sets a great tone, and allows the conversation to flow as well as the wine. This is not a place where I would stop in to have a drink knowing the full experience is so delightful. Thank you Coal Vines for exceeding my expectations and for wonderful dinners.

I've been wanting to try this new spot for a while, since I was so in love with Reverse and wanted to see what it's replacement was like! I knew they didn't do reservations and that the wait the past few weeks had been horrendous, so I arranged our Girls Night Out to meet there at 8 to catch a late dinner (and hopefully avoid some of the crowd!). Unfortunately, there were a couple of tables quite camped out (apparently one group had lingered for 3 hours...I mean Hello!, if there are legions of people waiting and standing 3 feet from you, get up and get a drink at the bar!) so we still had to wait an hour for a table. No matter, the 10 of us (hard to seat I know) grabbed glasses of wine from the efficient bartenders and waited patiently. The wine was priced pretty similarly to other Plaza spots ($7 was the cheapest glass), but they were generously poured. Due to the "campers" lengthening out wait time, the management brought out a whole pie of their Margherita pizza for us to sample to quiet our rumbling tummies! I thought that was a pretty cool thing for them to do. When we finally got seated around 9 pm, we ordered quickly and our food came out fast, hot and delicious! The management/owners still felt bad for our long wait and rewarded our patience by opening up a bottle of champagne for us on the house! The fact we had waited more than a minute was forgotten, thanks to their hospitality and generosity. It was a great way to start out a fun night with the ladies, and I am sure we will all be back!

This is a great place to go on a date or spend a night out with friends. The atmosphere is great and you can talk comfortably with friends without yelling. I do wish they had some tall bar tables at the front which would make it a little more casual for hanging out prior to being seated. The food is fantastic and they are really nice about customizing your order to fit your dietary needs. The pizza was the only thing that wasn't fantastic, but it was still good. It needs a little more cheese for my taste. Next time I'll ask for that and I'm sure they'll oblige. Lastly, the service was great. The owner kindly introduced himself and made us feel comfortable. The bartenders and servers were top-notch! I had a great experience and I will definitely be spending a lot of time there.

I absolutely love Coal Vines. I first tried it in Dallas and was so happy to find it at Country Club Plaza. The pizza is great. Simple thin crust with great toppings. The menu isn't crowded with thousands of options. A few apps, salad, specialty pizzas, and main dishes (for those crazy people that would come here and not eat pizza. You can build your own pizza. We started with the award winning meatballs and I can see why they call them that. They were amazing! Then the Tomato Cucumber salad is simple, but with a sweet and tangy dressing and lots of fresh basil that really makes it stand out. We ordered a prosciutto and wild mushroom pizza that was perfectly earthy. They have a lot of great wines and bottles of some higher ends at some amazing prices! The only thing I will say that on a hot KC night combined with the ovens make for a warm glass of wine - I personally like mine a little chilled. We will go back many times!

Excellent atmosphere with even better food. Went with my family and we all loved it. We started with the Calamari and the Smoked Salmon Tartar and I had the Grilled Shrimp and Scallop Spedini for an entree. I would recommend it to anyone. Everything we had was excellent.
