Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The absolute best cheese dip around. It is not just a block of melted queso. They have really perfected this dip with a variety of cheeses, spices, meat. Salsa is tangy with just a bit of heat. They offer a lunch buffet for $6.95 with a nice variety of options including fajitas. They are very attentive and keep the options fresh. The food is not extraordinary but it is good typical Mexican. They do have a burrito that you have to sign a waiver for to order it if you like to travel around and do food challenges. There is a patio area in the bar section. Con is that they still offer a smoking section which is why I am rating as a 4. The cheese dip alone warrants an above average rating. I like the old world Mexico atmosphere. This is not a gourmet restaurant so I am not going to rate it against a gourmet restaurant. It has been in Joplin a long time and I hope it's around for a lot longer.

I didn't care for the salsa that came with the chips. Strike one. The quesadilla I ordered took forever. Strike two. When it did arrive it was not good. The "cheese" was more like a cheese sauce. Couldn't eat it. Strike three.

Well I guess it would have been smart to read the reviews before going. Waited about 10 minutes to get seated because no one was at the front. The waitress we had was very nice & helpful once we were seated. There was another waitress who was also working, seemed like she was on some type of drug or had been fighting one, very uncomfortable. Took about 40 minutes to receive our food with only two other customers in the building. Food came with a lot but wasn't very good. I wouldn't recommend coming here.

Monday kids eat free with adult meal purchase. The cheese dip is simply disgusting. It's gritty. I ordered a chicken chimichanga. You can't mess that up right? Wrong! The chicken was ground to a consistency of paste. It was so gross! The only good thing was the chicken nuggets we ordered for my daughter. Yep, I could save my money and just make them for her at home. I rarely have negative reviews, but this place is so gross!

I've eaten at Casa Montez countless times since I was a kid, but haven't been recently for at least 10 years or so. Partly because I live 2 blocks away from a Mexican restaurant, and the convenience sometimes is hard to pass up. Since it's been so long, and my husband and I were out shopping nearby, we figured it was probably time to stop back in to see what we've been missing. Turns out, not much. It is pretty average as far as Mexican food goes. Not terrible, not out of this world. The CONS: They have a very unhappy-looking young hostess up front. She has what is referred to as "resting b*tch face" and I have no idea how she got her job. Not pleasant, very quiet. Definitely not the first impression you'd want to leave with your guests. However, hostesses come and go so who knows how long this comment will even be relevant. The PROS: I like their cheese dip. Seems either you do or you don't, but I'm one that thinks it's pretty tasty. It has pork or something in it, so it's not vegetarian if that matters to you. It does have a unique texture, and I can see why some people aren't a fan. The cheese dip has been the same forever and I feel it's one of the menu items that Casa Montez is known for. They also have good, creamy guacamole. A little heavy on the garlic, but I liked it a lot. Everything else was middle of the road. We both had tamales, and they were good. The masa was not too thick and there was plenty of pork stuffed inside. I did have a spinach enchilada that was topped with a sour cream sauce that I didn't care for. I scraped most of the sauce off because it was too thick/rich. Aside from that though, the enchilada was pretty good. Casa Montez has been open for 50 years and is the oldest locally owned restaurant in Joplin. That's quite an achievement I think. They may have passed their heydey, but we agreed our visit was just fine. We'd go back again.

Not at all pleased with my experience here. Wanted a shrimp chimichanga, waiter told me I couldn't because the chimis come premise and frozen. ???? Really? Ordered the chicken instead. Not that satisfying. Our waiter seemed to be very inexperienced and didn't quite get it right. Yes I ordered a chicken chimi, but I didn't say I wanted it ala carte. Our order took incredibly long to come out as well. The taste of the meal also was less than impressive, as one of my guests stated, " pretty sad when you've been working all day and the food doesn't taste good." I visit joplin from time to time, nothing I experienced here put this restaurant on my must visit list.

Monday nights kids eat free with full price adult meals which makes this a good deal. Most people either love or hate the cheese dip, very few people are in the middle. We always thought this was funny in college. Anyone who went to MSSU most likely knows what the cheese dip tastes like. I usually get the burrito plate, but fill up on the chips, salsa, and cheese dip first. Lately we just get the chips and salsa to go for the most part because it's easier with two little ones. If I had not eaten there so much through college years, I would most likely have a different opinion on this place, but I love to eat here.

This is a love it or hate it place in Joplin. I can't get my family to go back here. I did do the spicy burrito challenge. They make you sign a waiver and you get it free if you eat the whole thing. It was a burrito with red chili paste drowning the whole burrito. I finished it, but couldn't taste the actual burrito. About 1/4 of the paste and some queso and this would have been good. As is, be ready for some painful trips to the bathroom. They use a waiver for a reason. You'll pee fire and crap brimstone for 3 days.

Do not eat here!!!!! If I could select no stars I would have. Nasty salsa and worse cheese dip. My water had more flavor than anything on my plate.

OMG. This place is disgusting. On their marquee outside it says "rated number one" or something close to that. Whatta frickin lie. Most tasteless horrible mexican food I have ever had. Nothing had any flavor. Their meat seemed boiled and unseasoned. Their salsa was a complete disgrace. And their margarita was taquila-less. Would never recommend and will never ever ever be back.

Ate here for the first time the other day for lunch. The salsa wasnt good and the beef fajitas were horrible. The meat didn't taste fresh at all. I wouldn't go back to this place

An old classic in Joplin. Food is good and atmosphere is nice. Not a fancy place but food is good and I give it extra points because it's been around forever. Some people seem to hate on the queso - we love it! Most of the food I've had is excellent as well. The downside of this place is the service is very hit and miss. Lately it's been more miss. Last time it took 45 minutes to get our food...typically mexican places are absurdly quick. I do wish they would either fix the water wheel in the lobby or just remove it.
