I stopped in a while back and was pleasantly surprised as I walked through the door and was met by the pleasant aroma of GOOD FOOD. I was pleased with my experience here and would definitely recommend my friends stop in for a visit.

We were greeted promptly by Melissa, our server, who efficiently brought our Fitz's Root Beers and iced tea while we considered the multiple menu options. We enjoyed the Poor Man's Veal, which is chicken fried steak sauteed in white wine, mushrooms and Provolone cheese, and the smoked bratwurst and sauerkraut. Large portions for all of us but boxes are freely given to expedite taking home the delicious leftovers. Call ahead if coming after 7: they may close earlier than advertised.

We stopped in for lunch. The special tasted good. The service was not attentive. I had a hard time to get a refill on my ice tea. We wanted to buy dessert but she didn't come back. So we paid and left and bought ice cream down the street.

Drawn to the restaurant by the advertised special, we were almost stopped at the door by the heat radiating from the place. They had only been open about 15 minutes and apparently they kill the AC when they are closed. The Sunday special was BBQ and that's what we ordered. You have a choice of beef or pork, as a sandwich with chips or as a dinner. Between the three of us we had both in sandwich form. The sliced meat is tossed in a sweet BBQ sauce and then piled high on a bun. It didn't take long for our orders to arrive and they were rocket-hot when they hit the table. One beef sandwich was great, no fat or gristle to it, the other one however seemed to have ALL of the fat and gristle. The pork was also fat-and gristle free. Service was fast and friendly, If my sandwich had contained fewer inedible parts I would probably give them 3 stars. Between that and the AC... not so much.

Yay! We finally found a restaurant we liked. I would really recommend this place if you want to see the Mark Twain home and museum. It is located very closeby and had really decent food. We came for lunch and my husband had the Bratwurst plate which came with sauerkraut, potatoes and green beans. He practically licked the plate. I had the bbq pork which was very tasty. I also had an amazing glass of freshly brewed iced tea, just delicious. For dessert we each had a slice of homemade pie. I had the chocolate raspberry which was still cooling from the oven. Divine. Success at finding a good restaurant, yes! What a pleasure to enjoy a meal. Again, I will quote Mark Twain, our reason for being in Hannibal. All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then Success is sure.

This was a good find and one I would recommend for a two hour tour of Hannibal. The place is clean and the service quick and friendly. It's close to Mark Twain's boyhood home. I had bratwurst and pie, that's some damn fine eating in a town with a scarcity of it. Come here, you won't be sorry.

Delicious and fast: just what you want in a tourist town. We had BBQ beef, pork & a big hamburger. Satisfied these three Hanibal tourists! :)

I'm not sure what the problem was with the previous two reviewers. One of them wasn't even reviewing the restaurant at all, and was instead whining about the town of Hannibal itself. Yes, Hannibal probably saw its better days behind it, but even with its rough edges, it has charm and history. Probably would make a better day trip here than to spend the night. Most activities can be done in a few hours time. Now onto the restaurant review. The building has been a restaurant since the early teens. And except for a few modern updates, looks to remain largely them same, as its historic photograph confirmed. The place is clean, rustic and charming. We went here for lunch. The boys had the baked ham "kids meal" that could have fed me just fine! The ham was moist and flavorful. The sides were kids favorites -- well, my kids anyway :o) -- of corn, green beans, red skin potatoes and bread. Except for the potatoes, the corn and green beans were likely from a can, but wasn't overcooked so it still had a good bite. We had the lunch special for today (Friday), which was bratwurst and sauerkraut. The brat was smoked and then grilled. It had great flavor and was still juicy. The kraut wasn't overly sour. Add to that a Dijon mustard and it was delicious. With drinks for all of us, the bill came to around $36. Not bad at all! If you find yourself in Hannibal to take the "Mark Twain" tour of the area, and need a stop for lunch or dinner, I recommend Ole Planters. One note is that the whole town (except for bars) shuts down kinda early. Most restaurants close by 8pm, so keep that little bit of inconvenience in mind.

Food was okay. Prices were low. BUT cleanliness was not practiced here: server was eating pickles out if container meant for guests, made sandwiches without putting in gloves-/did not see her wash her hands even though she cleared tables and handled money, and was eating her lunch over an open bag of chips. Health department needs to take a serious look here I like to eat at local places, but I will not be doing do again in Hannibal if this restaurant is indicative of their health codes!

We made a quick stop in Hannibal for a little shopping and some food. The Old Planters Restaurant really surprised us. They offered a special on barbecued beef or pork that we both ordered. The food was on our plates faster than you could say "McDonalds used to serve fast food". The full plate of food provided corn, green beans and new potatoes in addition to the pork. Apparently their pies are worth the stop alone, but we were too full to eat dessert after polishing off the plate of food. At $8/plate the special was definitely worth every penny.

Food was good. Loved the pork tenderloin sandwich, although it did take a while to prepare. Wife liked the BBQ pork sandwich, and the kids loved the baked ham. Service was good, server brought kids out vegetables instead of chips when asked.

Was staying in St. Louis for a week, took a side trip to Hannibal expecting to find a small resort-like town that caters to tourists. Once we got there however, it's just a dump that happens to be by the river (which is barely seen due to the levees). No decent restaurants at all in what passes for downtown. Don't bother.
