Ok, I have to differ with the previous review. Granted there is nothing fancy and no frills, but it IS called St. Louis FISH and chicken. When you go there you order fish. Duh! Never have I heard anyone order chicken strips and I didn't know they sold them. Any way. They fry catfish, jack, shrimp and Tilapia. The fried fish is good and hot. It comes with the seasoned half soggy fries he mentioned. They are kinda good as long as you eat them when they're hot. After that, forget it. But if you want fried fish and don't want to cook it this is the way to go. The fried shrimp is good too. It has a thin batter, more like a coating than batter, it has a cornmeal base, similar to what you find on fish. The fried wings are something different. They are usually perfectly fried. They are seasoned and simply dredged in flour and fried. Then they are seasoned with what they call lemon pepper. It doesn't taste like the lemon pepper in my cabinet but its IS tasty. You can get them without the seasoning if you like. Overall if you are looking for a place to get fried fish, you will be happy and full. The only place to get comparable fried catfish to go is Schnucks, which does a mean catfish fillet or nuggets. By the way a 2 piece catfish fillet and fries is 7.59. 3 pieces 8.99. 2 fillets and 4 wings will set you back 9.99, but you will have leftovers. When my daughter was young we used to split that for dinner.

Let's be honest, from the looks of this place, it was obvious why I didn't go in sooner than I did. I've known about St. Louis Fish & Chicken for about 2 years now, since my first stint at the store I am currently assigned to at work. I've been back here for about 4 months now, and finally worked up the courage to walk past the janky looking exterior to give it a shot. I went in with some crazy expectations, thinking on one hand that this place looked like the kind of place that would be a waste of time, but having found some fantastic mom and pop restaurants lately, I had a small bit of hope that this place would be another hidden gem that I could expose to the world. Yeah, that' not going to be the case here. Walking in the door it's clearly a small time operation, with several (i counted 30) "combo meals" littering the walls. The menu was confusing, with a main menu over the ordering counter, and dozens of combo meal options on two if not three of the walls. (i didn't look at the wall behind me!) I did my best to ignore the various "notices" regarding their no refunds policies and a crazy policy regarding the pricing on pickles. Apparently certain meals earn you a pickle "If you ask for it" but other meals a pickle can be had for an extra fee?! I'm not even sure what to think about this! I gave up trying to read the menu, and settled for a 4 piece chicken tenders meal with fries and "bread." I also ordered a side of hush puppies because I have some crazy tick that forces me to order hush puppies any time I see them on a menu! Now, everyone that knows me knows that when I go into a new place and am unsure of what to order, I order chicken tenders. This is a "go to" dish, it's my thermometer of a restaurant's potential. Basically, if you can eff up chicken strips, there isn't anything on your menu that I want to try. So, with this in mind, let's talk about the food. First and foremost, no dipping sauces unique to this shop. Generic packets of ketchup, bbq sauce, and sweet and sour sauce were tossed into my bag. No one gave me a choice or asked me if I had a preference. I could even live with the selection had honey mustard been in the bag. It wasn't. Strike 1 to anyone wanting to sell chicken tenders, honey mustard has to be on the menu, if it's not, you are already well on your way to jacking up the chicken tenders! As far as the taste, I would put it somewhere between bland, tasteless, and I think they cooked the chicken in the same fryer as the fish. Wow. Even with all of that I could have lived with the flavor, bland isn't horrid, it's just bland! But the chicken was so dry. I tried the selection of sauces on my first tender, and it took 2 bbq and 2 ketchup packets to get one piece of chicken down. I ate one piece and trashed the rest of the chicken. The fries were ok, if not soggy. But I'm good with soggy fries, the fries were edible. Which came in handy since the chicken was not. And the bread, well, as advertised, it was bread. No butter. No honey. Pretty sure it was stale. Again, I couldn't eat it. The hush puppies were actually pretty good. For the price, I got a good portion, and the flavor wasn't bad at all. I liked them enough that I took the last few home to have with dinner. So I guess the meal wasn't a total loss! I'm going wrap this review up in the simplest way I can. Nothing here is unique. If you went to the grocery and bought some potatoes, chicken breasts, cooking oil, and some corn bread mix, you could reincarnate this meal and probably do a better job of putting it all together. Nothing here is "fresh" cooked unless you call dropping bulk chicken meat into a fryer "fresh cooked." I wouldn't take anyone here unless they were mooching off of me, and even then I wouldn't take them because I'd be wasting twice as much money!
