I enjoyed this restaurant. As its a buffet I was unsure. Went at dinner time and price is not that bad. If you go here wanting steak not sure if you will like it as I did not see many steak entries but I went for the hibachi and sushi. They had more of a variety of sushi then what I was expecting. Most was really good couple I just did not like. Hibachi was really good not a big variety of vegs for it but it had all the basic. One thing I did not care for was that they did not mix the egg in with the hibachi items I choose. They just cooked it and put it on the plate.

This place was long awaited for Florissant and for my family. My husband and I love sushi and we were blown away by the variety. As a Hawaii local, this is the closest I could get to home without spending a pretty penny, traveling a distance, or not being disappointed when I walked through the door. When you walk in, you enter another set of doors which opens to a waiting area with a pond. Japanese pond! They had a unique tree table and seats. It's kind of weird because it's fairly large unused space. You are greeted by the hostess who immediately seats you. Then tells you your waiter will bring your drinks and you pay your waiter. Upon walking into the seating area, first thing I noticed was the Japanese decor glass window to the doors of the 2 separate seating areas...so cool. Basically the buffet is 3 walls long. The quality of their food is good. Wish they had strawberries for the chocolate fountain.

OMGWTFBBQ, this place is great. we went in for lunch today and it was outstanding. The selection of food ranged all over the place. It was all hot and fresh. I dont usually do buffet sushi, but the sushi chef was right there making it and it was almost perfect. You must also go into the bathroom and wash your hands while you are there because the hand dryer is a treat in and of itself.

Not normally a buffet fan, but wanted to give this place a try. The sushi was good and seemed fresh. There were staff out making sushi near the buffet while I was scavenging. The hibachi grill was yummy, but next time I would hold off on the chili sauce as they are cooking the meat. But, no worries, they ask before they add anything. I like hot and spicy, but it was a bit too much for me. The Chinese food on the buffet was the only thing that I wasn't impressed with. Perhaps it had been out for a little while because it wasn't really hot. The service was fantastic. Our waiter didn't miss a beat - our drinks were always full and he cleared our used plates immediately. I'll be back...

I'm not sure why this place is categorized as Japanese cuisine. I'm Japanese and have lived most of my life in Japan, and this was quite the disappointing outing. In fact I was upset to know how wrongly misrepresented Japanese cuisine was (and Japanese culture for that matter). Hokkaido is more of an mix of different Asian cuisine, I'm guessing mostly Chinese. The food and service was not all that bad. But the place was pretty filthy and the fact that they don't really have Japanese food stops me at giving only two stars.

The food here was majorly lacking. I've only been once and never returned (and turned down several offers for people to pay for my meal there).

Great value. The Sushi is well made, considering the price of course. The rice could be better. I love the unagi and salmon ones. The Chinese buffet is better than my expectations. Crabs are delicious, a bit dry though. I would also recommend coconut shrimps. It was a great surprise to see they offer fog legs. That is one of my favorite Chinese cuisines. I hope they can offer ducks or lamb. This one just became my favorite buffet place in St Louis. will visit again. Price is $14-16 for lunch. A little noisy,

The lunch buffet is about $7.49 (if I remember correctly). When you walk in for the first time, you're overwhelmed by the size and selection. There's not a lot of overhead signage, so you're not exactly sure where to start. We had to walk the entire buffet before we figured out where to start. Closest to the entrance, you have salads and dessert (so beginning and end?), anywhere from basic garden salad to squid salad and dessert complete with chocolate fountain. This is followed by two sections of sushi, which are mostly basic sushi rolls, such as California roll or salmon roll and some nigiri. The rolls seem very quickly thrown together in that they aren't the "pretty" looking sushi you might get at Drunken Fish or Wasabi, and they fall apart a bit. They did taste fresh though, so that was good. The next 3 or 4 sections are a variety of all Asian from Korean spare ribs to Chinese sweet and sour chicken to Japanese miso soup. Throw in some fried chicken, rice, seafood bake, crab rangoon, pineapple chicken, tempura vegetables, octopus, etc. These dishes were OK, but there was not a single dish that I haven't had better elsewhere, and several were not very hot/warm. At the far end of the restaurant is a Mongolian grill. Choose your vegetables and meats, noodles or whatever, and hand it to the chef who uses his own sauces and makes you a stir fry. My friend had this and felt this was the hottest meal on the buffet and enjoyed it, but it really filled him up, and he didn't have room to try much else. So the place is good if you want something different for the variety. But I wouldn't go in expecting particularly good Asian food. And I can see why they bill themselves as Sushi and Seafood, but I'm not entirely sure of the Steak part. I guess there is beef in some of the dishes, but that would be my only guess.

This is definitely not my favorite buffet. Being part Japanese and growing up in Japan I hate that they consider their food Japanese. The only thing Japanese about is the sushi which is far from the real deal. The do have some ok dishes and I have been there a few times. I enjoy their chicken on a stick, pot stickers, and dumplings. They have good fried noodles too.

As far as Asian buffet places go, this is as good as it gets... Don't let the location in a run down strip mall fool you - the place is extremely nice inside, and humongous; sporting what is easily the largest and best buffet in the entire area. Food is of much higher quality then places like Hibachi Grill, and they use no MSG in their food. An expansive selection of seafood is available, as are steaks and other items from the grill. The desert bar is humongous, and they have lots of really nice and fresh fruit. For 2 adults with drinks and tip for dinner, the price was under $30. A great value for food of the quality that they have. I really like the breading they use on their shrimp; really good egg rolls, and excellent fried rice that I can taste just a hint of cinnamon in... Hostess was very friendly; the wait staff was attentive, but it was obvious they didn't speak much English. Don't eat all day if you are coming here for dinner!

Preparing to roll out the door. This is the best asian food I have had in years. Huge buffet and pleanty of fruit. Not just typical asian food either. There are some american foods too and some indian. He deserts and sushi are fantastic. He place looks small from the parking lot but it is absolutly huge inside. They can serve hundreds of people and keep the line flowing. My wife and I have found our new go to place.

There is definitely a huge variety here. Went for a weekday lunch. Bill was $10. General chicken was tasty. Pot stickers are better at other buffets. Many of the options were warm at best. The hibachi part was good in terms of food being hot and decent selection of options.

This buffet is not bad for the price. The grill by far is the best with lots of choices. Spring rolls are very good. Plenty of space and staff are helpful.

The food here is pretty good for a buffet. I've been to several Asian cuisine buffets and this one isn't the worst. The place is clean and food tastes fresh. The sushi....(the only sushi around) is also pretty good. Sometimes the service is a little strange, sometimes no refills sometimes to many refills. Overall though it's not bad, I will be back and if you're in the mood for Asian buffet and don't want to travel far from Florissant, try Hokkaido.

I visited once & never returned. The food was OK - not good enough to tempt me to go back. It's mainly the atmosphere I didn't care for. It had none really. The wait staff is not very friendly or personable.

Love this buffet style restaurant. They serve a variety of Asian cuisine, but there are also several American dishes. The salad bar includes Asian dishes along with the usual vegetables and fruit. The hibachi grill is good. There are always several types of sushi, which are made fresh all day. The dessert bar has a good variety of cakes, cookies and custard like desserts. No one should ever leave this restaurant hungry.

My coworkers are madly obsessed with this place and I can't seem to figure out why...I think it involves the fact that you can put gummi bears on your salad....ew. (This was cited as a reason why we should go there every single time for lunch by a former coworker....and yet he refused to so much as try the Pearl Cafe...lol. To each his own!) Actually, I just realized after trying the place on Manchester Rd that this is one of the better buffets in the area, although nothing beats Emperor's Palace and their quality/selection. Hokkaido isn't bad either, though, and I wonder if it's a national chain because we have one of these back in Pittsburgh and my mom and I ate there and were pleasantly surprised by it. I usually get seafood but have to be careful and read the signs/ask to ensure it's not going to rape my tongue/stomach with spices. The sushi was edible but I'll leave it at that. I usually avoid the "sushi" section at buffets like these, unless I am in the mood for it and can ask them to customize the roll. You figure if enough people eat it, and it's popular enough, the raw fish won't sit around too long and have a chance to spoil. The weirder stuff is usually better too...frog legs, snails, muscles, clams, octopi, crawdads...etc. I only wish they could make a nonspicy version of the crawdads. Desserts aren't bad here but I usually avoid or just get ice cream. Always fun to watch my coworkers and managers eat the weirdest combos of food here, haha, always a good time!

Finding a good Asian cuisine buffet in St. Louis is a tough task. Frankly, I stay clear of them around here. Chinese food just doesn't taste right in St. Louis, having spent six years going to school in Springfield, MO. If you know anything about Springfield Chinese, then you would stay clear of buffets here, too! Hokkaido's solution to this issue is quantity. Their buffet is enormous! The room looks more like a banquet hall, and the buffet wraps around three sides of it. Options are endless. I don't look at a buffet as a chance to gorge myself but an oppotunity to try as many dishes as possible. Hokkaido does hibachi, sushi, and a great assortment of traditional Chinese fare. I wasn't a fan of everything I tried but certainly found many highlights on the menu. Even some of the sushi was pretty good! My favorite was definitely the hibachi grill. The chef cooked up my shrimp, crab, and noodles right in front of me, and the dish was quite nice. Other options on the grill include several vegetables, beef, chicken, and pork. I would definitely come back but only for lunch. The dinner prices are well into the teens.

Best buffet for the price and selections. Large salad and fruit/ dessert section I barely could touch. We went on Sunday dinner and it was packed. 2 small private rooms on side along with main dining room. 2 sections of sushi, 3 to 4 sections of miscellaneous foods and hibachi stir fry your own. We got full off the seafood they had oysters, mussels, clams, canana crab, (sign said starting Sept 2 they have snow crabs), crawfish, seasnails, your typical orange chicken, general tsao chicken, fried foods, salmon, flounder, scallops (though scallops were hard to pull out of the baked scallop mixed in with imitation crab meat full of mayo sauce). Oh did I mention chocolate fountain, and large selections. I didn't get a chance to fully try everything, but what I did try the quality was surprisingly good for a buffet. I had a few spider rolls, the only thing is the california rolls didn't have the mixed imitation crab instead of just the piece. The sashimi rolls on rice I felt bad taking the meat and not filling up on rice, there was so much other stuff to fill up on. Watermelon today was sweet. Don't expect sushi restaurant type sushi, since it is a buffet, you see them make the sushi but if no one grabs the sushi then it sits. My hubby felt his soft shell crab was hard and may have sat too long. Bathroom is clean and big, nice glass door decor. Weekend adult $12.99 dinner is seriously a steal. This is the first location, I guess it did so well they have #2 in Illinois but when I called it's $11.99 and cheaper. Crazy how these people can make decent food for the price. But way to go I will be coming back.

They have a great selection of menu items available and the price is somewhat okay for a lunch time buffet. As far as sushi goes, I would still rather go to a sushi-specific restaurant just because they weren't as fresh there. The seafood dishes selections, however, were wonderful! For 2 people, it was $25 for lunch so I was a bit shocked since I've gone to a Chinese buffet I like better with a little bit more dishes to choose from. I did not order anything from the grill because nothing really seemed too appetizing so I can't judge that aspect of the restaurant. They do have plentiful deserts if you have a sweet-tooth!

One star for each of the following: 1) The price was quite right for such a full-featured buffet. Two adults, two kids, around $40 including soft drinks and tip (we did have a coupon for half off one of the adult buffets, and this was lunch -- their dinner prices are much higher). 2) The service was genuinely friendly, courteous and efficient. Staff didn't hover over us, but were constantly making the rounds to refill drinks, remove used plates, etc. 3) A variety of food, all well-prepared and, most importantly, reasonably fresh. That's always a concern with buffets. I'm especially turned off by sushi that's been sitting out for quite some time in a warm environment. The sushi at Hokkaido was kept fairly cold and had obviously been recently prepared. The fourth star is for all of those three things being present AT ONCE. The hibachi station was quite nice. I had two plates, all told involving veggies, shrimp, chicken, steak, egg and noodles. The chef prepared them quickly and competently, handling multiple customers simultaneously so the wait was short. I could eat that every day without complaint. And frankly I got my money's worth right there before I even touched anything else. The standard Chinese buffet? Fairly pedestrian but well done. Potstickers that weren't all dried out. Sweet and sour, Kung Pao and General Tso's chicken. Decent fried rice. There are better Chinese buffets in town, but there are worse ones too. This one was better than good enough. I'm no sushi expert, and I tend to go for the standard Americanized rolls. I had several servings of California roll and spicy tuna. Very nicely done (I usually find buffet sushi dry and flavorless, but this was quite good). Wasabi and ginger were set out for the taking. I didn't see that orange sauce that often comes with sushi, but some rolls had it pre-drizzled, so I assume I could have had some if I'd asked. I sampled a variety of other -- for lack of a better word, "American" -- dishes. Something called "steak pie" that was basically hamburger and cheese in a flaky crust. A little bland but not bad. Stuffed mushrooms, fried potatoes, and so forth. I have no complaints. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. Well, okay, the roast beef was a little tough, but the grilled pork chops made up for it. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the dessert bar, but hey, I'm diabetic, so what do you expect? The desserts were mostly of the "bought a box of it and set it out" variety. Cake, cookies, cream puffs, that kind of thing. They did have soft-serve ice cream, fruit that looked fresh enough to pass most people's muster, and a chocolate fountain. The rest of the family likewise pronounced themselves well-pleased, and that's kind of the whole point of a variety/buffet place, isn't it? Obviously heavy on the oriental food as opposed to an Old Country, Golden Corral, etc., but that's what we happened to be craving. I'd eat there again. I'd recommend it to friends. If there's some very particular dining experience you're seeking, it might not be for you. But as buffets go it is top-notch.

An average Chinese Buffet joint. I do have to say they do have a very large selection of items; including sushi and a Mongolian stir fry area. They do seem to rotate the foods rather quickly and the flavor of the food was ... good. But like most buffets things tend to get dry and overcooked. As far as buffet's go this one is better than most. And don't get me wrong sometimes I'm in the mood for a buffet. If I am in the neighborhood I would drop by again.

Florissant has needed a good buffet, for a very long time! This, is EXCELLENT! Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but it's also the only place in Florissant you can get sushi! They have a hibachi grill, various types of sushi, tons of seafood, and a chocolate fountain. Buffets always freak me out because the prices are not posted so here they are, Mon-Thurs 10-4 is 7.95, per person and dinner is 13.95 per person. I want to go on and on about how great it was but I tried so many different things I can't remember them all! I tried a seafood delight, that was very tasty and coconut shrimp. I am embarrassed to say, my absolute favorite was the chocolate fountain... :o) Can't wait until my stomach processes all this food and I can go back!

I tend to leave my self-control at the door when I go to all-you-can-eats and go home with a stomach full of guilt+self-hatred. So, whenever I'm peer-pressured into going to a buffet, I always pray that the the buffet is at least decent enough to lift me up into food heaven for a while before I come back down and realize how I just stuffed myself with days worth of crap. After hearing good things about Hokkaido from a local friend who went with his Asian family (which I assume consists of picky old Asian people who I automatically ascribe Asian-buffet-food-wisdom to), I decided to give this place a try since my group wanted to go to a buffet. We got there around 7 tonight (Sunday), and the restaurant was PACKED with a few groups of people already in the waiting area. However, my group of 8 still got a table in just about 10min. DECOR: Hokkaido has some gaudy decors like most Asian restaurants, but personally I like the atmosphere/set-up here a lot better than I do at Emperor's Palace or Ryce (two main Asian buffets in STL). Also, I read something about how the bathrooms are much nicer here. Even though I usually try to avoid public bathrooms (especially public bathrooms in Asian restaurants) at all costs, I decided to check it out out of curiosity. Hokkaido definitely has nicer bathrooms (well, the lady's bathroom at least) than EP and Ryce, but it could use more frequent daily maintenance because it's still kind of disgusting. FOOD: Overall, Hokkaido is pretty similar to EP/Ryce in terms of the food. It's got a Mongolian Grill station, common Asian entrees, misc fried American food, sushi, desserts (the cheesecake was amazing) with a chocolate fountain, a small fruit bar (their kiwi slices are a little too hard and sour), ice cream. Shame that they've only got a few dim sum choices, but they have the best (freshness and variety) sushi selection out of all the similar Asian buffets in STL. They've also got some really decent seafood choices like HUGE and delish oysters drenched in xo sauce. The lines for food was super long and moved a bit slowly right around when we started (7ish, peak dinner time). The sushi always disappeared really quickly, and those gigantic oysters were usually gone within a few minutes. SERVICE: The service was fast and friendly even though the restaurant was packed. Also, if you tell them that it's your birthday, Hokkaido will have a group of staff whip out drums, sing to you in Japanese, and give you a little birthday cupcake. We convinced our waitress that it's our friend's 16th birthday (he looks at least 24) and we wanted to give him a little birthday surprise. So when our friend came back to the table, the Hokkaido birthday band surrounded him, did the whole drumming/chanting shebang, and lit him a little birthday cupcake before tying a Hokkaido headband on our birthday boy as we laughed at him. The birthday band went around the restaurant several times when we were there and we were pretty sure half of the birthdays were fake, but the service definitely added some fun to the atmosphere. Overall, I myself and the 7 hungry men in my dinner crew were very satisfied with Hokkaido, especially for a weekend price of 12.99 (not for a bunch of nasty carbs but for all those HUGE oysters). Still, I'll definitely need to run my daily 8 miles first thing tomorrow morning as post-buffet therapy.

Great place for a large group. Have had occasional issues getting the checks straightened out but hopefully they've worked out the kinks because today was smooth. Wide variety of food. Even with the busy lunch crowd there's always plenty of hot choices available. It's a bit off putting to see the sign saying "no half eaten food in the chocolate fountain" but that's not their fault.. people are just gross! Great value for the price!!

This place is a guilty pleasure. I try to go once every 2-3 months. It's a buffet, so I wasn't expecting top-notch stuff. Most of the food is good, but most of the food has a butt-load of cheese on there. Some kind of yellow cheese and cream cheese. Also there are some things that are too salty for me. I do enjoy the variety of things. I would only do lunch hours to save some money. Two dislikes, every time I walk in, there is no host. I have to wait almost 10 min sometimes for someone to seat us. I don't mind the wait, I would just like the host to be there to tell me that I have to wait. Isn't that part of their job? I don't know. The other thing-- it's so hard to get a waitress' attention.

This entire establishment is a joke. I was really looking forward to a sushi spot near my mothers in Florissant but this is a disgrace. I'll stick to my downtown surroundings. The location is in a shopping center, no complaints. The lobby is actually nice, the decor is quite nice. No complaints. Then it goes downhill...there are 2 underage hostesses, that clearly need a crash course in customer service, have on these cheap looking kimonos hastily thrown over jeans and t shirts. Better off just wearing all black. They guide you to this cafeteria. There are booths on the edge of the cafeteria and then tables on the inside like a CAFETERIA!!!!! the buffets are all around with one having a hibachi after you select ur food, that was actually nice. The next buffet had FRIED CHICKEN and TEXAS TOAST I KID U NOT!! that transitioned into chinese food buffet. From crab rangoon to sweet and sour chicken. Wtf!? there actually is a sushi bar but hardly anyone was eating from it. The sushi itself wasn't bad, 6 out of 10. Then of course the dessert buffet, self explanatory. Now to top off the random selection of food and the crappy seating!!!! NONE OF THE WAITRESSES WERE TIP WORTHY. THEY HARDLY SPOKE ENGLISH, WE WERE DONE WITH OUR PLATES BEFORE SHE CAME BACK WITH DRINKS, YOU NEVER KNEW WHO WAS YOUR WAITRESS AND NO ONE CLEARED THE PLATES! I was thoroughly pissed off and in a hurry to leave. Imitation seafood and beyond sh!tty service. Management needs to get it together. Rearrange tables, new staff and pick a theme for the food. Overall this place isn't even an option for when we want to eat out.

One of the best chinese buffets in saint louis, the other one being the buffet in chesterfield valley that I can't remember the name of. The selection here is amazing and the prices are reasonable. I've never had to wait behind people or seen them run out of some of the more popular entrees like I have seen some buffets do. If you're looking for a buffet to impress your search is done because you have found it.

"They have sushi on the buffet and actual desserts - a chocolate fountain and really good cheesecake!" After hearing this from my sister, we went to Hokkaido around 9pm on a Friday evening - not the best time to come here. Sure, there was plenty of food out on the buffet but the sushi selection wasn't the best and none of it was labeled. They were no longer making fresh rolls, either. (I SO wanted a spider roll...) I chose a few things and while not bad, it's wasn't that good. Mediocre at best. The chocolate fountain was there and some pineapple slices dipped in said fountain were yummy but that cheesecake was nowhere to be found. Needless to say, I wasn't wow'd but would be willing to give it another try.

It's a given that this place will get more expensive. Hopefully, they don't slide in quality. One thing that Florissant's been sorely missing is some solid Chinese... uh... Chinese food. I mean, seriously, my favorite place is some ghetto takeout place (still awesome, btw...). Hokkaido's one of them serve everything sort of buffets run by some Chinese people. I've only been for lunch but lunch, alone, was impressive. They had steamed fish, sauteed clams, and salt'n pepper squid, along with a decent selection of sushi rolls. If that doesn't impress you, I don't know what else will, because you're not finding any of this kind of food this side of 270 very easily. Aside from that, they have very impressive wings and chicken-on-a-stick, my go-to staples at any Chinese buffet. Time will tell how this place turns out, as they're just starting out and not sure if they have their logistics set to keep prices down. It's sort of sad how buffets tend to either go out of business or just start sucking. All I have to say is that if they keep the food at this caliber, I'd pay a significant amount over what they're currently charging, easily.

If i had to describe Hokkaido in one word, it would be ENORMOUS. This place is huge!!! The foyer, seating area(s), buffet, food options, chocolate fountain, everything. There are so many options!! My two favorite areas of the buffet are the sushi (!) and the stir-fry area. The sushi isn't the freshest I've ever tasted, but it gets the job done. At the stir-fry area, you can create your own dish with the mix-and-match options. However, at times the line can be VERY long. Everything else on the buffet is great, very hot, and very fresh. I highly recommend bringing the whole family here. It's especially great to come for lunch, as the buffet is very cheap at lunch on the weekdays!

Hokkaido Buffet is pretty big in California. So my eyes popped when I saw the billboard off 270 announcing their St Louis existence. For $12.99 per person anytime on weekends, it is a very good price. Their sushi offering is even better than Emperors Palace at Chesterfield Valley. Actually, if they're both in the same area, I would choose Hokkaido over Emperors' based on the ratio of good dishes over price. Emperors may have more selection but half of them barely meets my expectations. Hokkaido having less, exceeds my expectations hugely on value. On a scale of 1 - 5 for Chinese Buffet, 5 being the best, Hokkaido sits at #4. Although, cheese cake is not a chinese dessert, Hokkaido's is one of the best I've had for a buffet. Really. Which is probably why I'ld come back -- for the cheese cake ... and some chinese food.

I came here with a big group on a Friday night. They told us there was a 20 minute wait... not bad for a Friday night and 11 people. It was much quicker, but make sure that you have your whole party there- they would not seat us until all 11 people were ready to be seated. (I am guessing they are preventing issues with people not paying, or whatnot). Firstly, it was almost overwhelming how big this place is. There are a ton of seats and a huge amount of food! Sadly even with such a large selection, the food left something to be desired. There were VERY FEW vegetarian options. The vegetable tempura was actually good, but the tempura sauce was one of the worst things I'd ever tasted. They also had cheese-filled wontons, which I was excited about... It's been a long time since I've had a crab rangoon. There were a few more options of the meatless variety, but very limited. I was hoping that they would have some veggie sushi, but again I was disappointed. None of their sushi or nigiri are labeled, though, so I had to look to see if any of them were veggie. None of the desserts were great, and none seemed like they were made in-house. The chocolate fountain was a novelty, but again, not exceptional. The fruit was actually delicious and the most satisfying part of my meal. Special Note: My young brother has many food allergies and happened to be dining with us on this occasion. There was almost nothing he could (or would) eat from the buffet. One of the only things he wanted was some ice cream. We grabbed a hostess to ask if the ice cream contained eggs (some soft-serve does). She responded that she had no idea and just walked away. We then asked our server. She also said she didn't know but told us the manager was in the bar if we wanted to go ask. She did not offer to get him for us. One of us finally went into the bar to ask. He was very helpful and ran into the back to make sure. (It is egg-free, by the way). A special kudos for the manager with the pony-tail (I don't recall his name). The Moral: Did I leave full? Yes. Did I leave satisfied with what I had eaten? Not really.

Pretty good size joint. I like the Mongolian BBQ a lot because I got to pick what ended up in the dish they made. Plenty of fixins both from a protein and veggie perspective. Sweet & Sour chicken was good, as were the Chinese donuts. Ice cream was standard-out-of-the-dispenser. Meh. The area around the ice cream was a disaster, prepare to get extremely messy. Other desserts looked even crappier. Not a huge fan of the decor, and the service staff is "just ok". We did manage to score seats in the side dining rooms which allowed our rather large work group to have a nice time. As far as Chinese Buffets in STL, Emperor's Palace is probably better than this one, but that's about the only one that competes.

    - no msg - good selection - great value, can't beat endless habchi - mediocre sushi selection - crowd kills the environment. The fiancee won't go due to it.

I've only been out to St. Louis a few times to visit my girlfriend's family. The first time they brought me to this Asian buffet called, Ryce. It was naaastay. Last night her parents decided they wanted to bring me to Hokkaido. Scarred from my first experience I had my guard up. After being seated and having our drinks taken, I take a stroll past everything before even grabbing a plate (so I can decide what I want now or later). To my surprise the food looked FRESH! Not like a typical buffet where the food looks like it's been sitting there for 2 hours without being touched... It was casino buffet style quality, maybe better! There definitely was a lot more variety. My favorites were the salt & pepper frog legs, salt & pepper squid, general tso's chicken, and the teppan area (where you can choose your noodles/veggies/meat and have the chef cook it up the way you want it).

First of all the restaurant gets points for having an awesome sounding name. Before you continue reading this review take a moment to yourself and say it out loud.... Now say it again. It brought a smile to your face I bet! This place is huge, and would work out very good for groups of any size. I have been here twice and each time left feeling very full and my wallet was not much lighter. The sushi was subpar but I ate a few pieces anyway. The hibachi style grill is very tasty and gives you plenty of options. I found their soups to be good for a buffet but nothing special. I really enjoyed some of their desserts however was not a fan of the chocolate they used for their chocolate fountain and thought the rice crispy treat tasted stale each time I ate there. I find it fun to go here and not open my silverware and eat everything with chopsticks because I am weird like that. Give this place a try you will not be sorry you did.

This restaurant is a breath of fresh air for the Hwy 67 area. I was amazed at the almost endless selection of entrees to choose from. The quality of food easily gets my vote. Everything was deilicious. The atmosphere, however, was lacking. Tables are too close together, walk ways are crowded, and maybe even too dark. If things were more spaced out or if the restuarant were smaller, the design would work. While there are a few rough edges, most everything else about this restaurant is good. I'd like to see a more strict dress code implemented but that's just me.

By far the worst buffet that I have ever been to. The place is crowded all the time and the food was horrible. The quality left something to be desired and I was not impressed with the sushi. They do have a variety selections available but I did not think I was able to get all the way through the buffet because of the lines. People let their children run around the buffet not supervised. I witnessed one child literally cough on the buffet and I had kids running all around me when I was trying to get desserts. I understand it is a buffet and you have to expect some of this stuff but it seemed like the staff did nothing to enforce the rules.

This is a great place for a big group if you make a reservation. I made a reservation for 15 but only 12 came and the waitress kept trying to charge us for 15 people. The service was a 7 out of 10 but the food was hot ansd a big variety. Went on a Friday night around 7pm. They have everything you could imagine. They even had my Dads favorite grilled shrimp with cheese on top. the sushi was fresh and the make your own lo mein was my favorite. I think I put a pound of bean sprouts on my plate. Also they have a funny band that comes out if it's someone's birthday but beware they will charge you $3 on your bill. I gave this place a four star even though the table service wasn't that great. Oh did I mention it's a big sign outside that says NO MSG .................

Very good selection of high quality seafood. Large variety of high quality Sushi, all with different Asian flavors, very tasty. Good ambiance. A pretty restaurant in a minimalist way.

Great food, plenty of selection, and service is excellent. Sushi is surprisingly good although they make up for the lack of MSG by using more salt and sugar. Otherwise, this is a good if you are hungry for Chinese buffet and sushi and Mongolian stir fry all at the same place.

Hokkaido has a wide array of food choices and I enjoy the sushi selection. My son's favorite is ending the meal with the chocolate fountain! A little expensive on nights and weekends so we try to hit it for lunch. The service is lacking or I would have given this more stars. We typically wait a while for our bill so we find ourselves asking for it very early.

The restaurant is huge and a bit overwhelming!!!! The food was good, not great. We went there for a birthday party and it was more than adequate for that. I would go back however.

My 6 year old daughter and I eat here a lot. She loves the chocolate fountain. The food is relatively good. Their sushi has been getting progressively better. Although sometimes some of the rolls that have been fried in tempura are cold and mushy. Not quite sure what's going on there. Tons of food to choose from and a Mongolian style BBQ where a chef will cook your selections. The problem with that is the selections are relatively scarce. Overall, not bad for a buffet.

I'll give 4 stars for the Chinese food and 2 stars for the Japanese food. Lets start by saying that the restaurant is not owned by Japanese people, which is not bad in itself, but none of the cooks are Japanese either. For a restaurant with a name like Hokkaido, you'd expect to have at least one chef with experience in Japanese cuisine. I was willing to look past this fact due to the restaurant owner's multitude of restaurants in the St. Louis area. Unfortunately, my initial instincts were correct. A Chinese owned restaurant serves poor Japanese food, but serves good Chinese food. Who would have thought? Of course, if the restaurant were just another "Chinese buffet", I doubt they'd receive the same amount of customers they are currently getting. On to the sushi: All the cuts of fish splayed out on display were dried out. Good sushi needs to not only be fresh, but also freshly cut. If you're coming here for sushi (which I sincerely hope you aren't), make sure you come on a busy day so that you might get sushi that was more recently sliced. If not, I wouldn't risk your health. On to the rest: Huge selection of dishes means there's something for everyone. The Chinese food is decent, not great, but it is palatable. The pot stickers I had were rather mushi, the shu mai was good, the salt and pepper squid was ok, but the chicken was pretty delicious. "Hokkaido" beef was sinewy, the salmon was cooked to death, and the desserts are very blasé. My recommendation: Come if you have children or friends who cannot at all decide on what to eat. There's a large selection of food to at least be entertained. Want sushi? Look elsewhere. There's a reason you won't see Japanese people dining there. I am definitely not visiting this buffet again. To the restaurant: My suggestion to you is to reduce the amount of food you are serving, and really focus on the dishes that are really delicious. Otherwise, every dish will end up being more or less mediocre.
