Every meal that I have at the demun oyster bar is a great experience-From the ambience, warmth, and fabulous staff, to the exceptional attention to every detail, with cuisine that is extremely fresh and delicious! The oyster stew has become one of my standards on every visit and the pasta with seafood is phenomenal! This restaurant and bar has become one of my favorites and gets regular visits... There's no where in St. Louis where you can get fresher oysters or better seafood!!!!

Pasta with scallops and shrimp, asparagus, red peppers and pesto was fantastic! The oyster chowder was amazing my friends mentioned. I enjoyed the Manhattan Clam Chowder! Latia was fantastic and very friendly! Reservations were easy to make and were honored on same day. The Chardonnay from Sonoma called Folie a Deux 2012 awesome! We will return again when we come back to St. Louis!

This is a really nice place to relax and enjoy a beautiful sunny day. The service is courteous and attentive, and the steamed mussels and clams are delicious. I recommend the garlic beurre blanc if you can eat light for the remainder of the day (though my boyfriend preferred the Creole andouille sauce). Items on the menu here are a bit pricier than I am normally willing to shell out (get it??) for, but I left feeling satisfied and like the food and experience were worth it.

high expectations lead to disappointment? I wasn't utterly disappointed but I did have some high expectations. the ambiance of the place was really nice and intimate. we had the option of outdoor and indoor seating, we opted for indoor because it was pretty warm but it was still warm inside because all the doors were open. we ordered the fish du jour which was the grouper for the night. it was just a little bit overcooked and dry for my liking. it came with two dry croquettes. wasn't all that impressed. pomme frites are just pomme frites. nothing exciting. we also ordered the mussels and clams. I thought most of the mussels were undercooked and some clams were under and others were perfect. but what was really memorable was the broth... rich, creamy, enlightening really. we asked for more bread to dip in the broth... it took quite a while. lastly, we ordered all the raw oysters they had on menu so we can try everything. the variety was great, we really enjoyed two out of the five we tried. I'm no oyster connoisseur but I was a little disappointed that they didn't have cocktail sauce and horseradish. instead, they had a mild apple vinegar type of dipping sauce which pretty much had no flavor. they have an open oyster bar concept so it was fun to watch them shuck the oysters before our very eyes. however, the shucker didn't do the best shucking because there was decent amount oyster shell pieces and gritty-ness. the variety was nice but I prefer the oysters from Broadway oyster bar. the whole experience was pretty decent but I was NOT a fan of our waitress. we sat right in the middle of the bar so it made it easier to give our requests to other servers. but she would walk right past us, making no eye contact, never checking on us unless we waved her down, hardly a crack of a smile... meanwhile we see her flirting with her coworker and giving him more attention than the patrons. laetia was great though. friendly and engaging! they also had a pretty good variety of local beers.

First let me say, this would be 5 stars, but since the place is fairly pricey and I can't eat there as often as I'd like...it loses a star... That being said I've been twice now and enjoyed both visits immensely. I sat at the bar both times and the weather was nice enough that doors were all open to the outside. The bar staff was friendly and knowledgeable of the various oysters and their flavors. I ordered a half dozen each visits and tried to mix them up. I honestly never realized that there was such a difference in flavors. They were all great though and seemed to be very fresh. It was also interesting watching the guy shuck them behind the bar, he's almost on a stage with the oysters laid out on ice in front of him. Pretty cool to watch. As for the other food, I cannot say enough about the Oyster Chowder....it is truly amazing and was what confirmed for me that I would be back. For my main course I had the fish du jour which was a grouper and it was great. I will be heading back soon! If you don't mind spending a bit for fresh seafood, great service and a pleasant "neighborhood type" atmosphere, then you will most likely enjoy this place. Raising it to Five stars. Been here a couple more times and for the quality and the service.... Worth every penny! :-)

Myself and my wife had stopped in St Louis during our honeymoon and we have to admit, we knew nothing about St Louis and we did not know at all what to expect. Obviously this area is not downtown in the slightest but this is only where we stayed and we have left here with great memories. One of those memories is this place. We were advised by the guys we were staying with that here would be quite a nice place to eat. We took their advice and walked over and we loved it. We had been eating mainly burgers and heavy meats up until this point in our trip and having seafood of this standard was a real welcome break. I had Oysters (had to) and my wife had the Mussels and both of us really enjoyed our meals. I tried a couple of local beers too which again were thoroughly enjoyable. What made this visit overall was how well mannered and pleasant the 2 waiters were that kept coming over to chat to us. We are from Birmingham England ourselves and wanted to know a little more about St Louis and the waiter was happy to fill us in on all the important bits really (we hope we didn't get him in any trouble as we were a bit chatty and kept dragging him away from serving unintentionally). We really enjoyed it here and as a result we are hoping to return to St Louis again at some point to check more of it out. We went to the Zoo on the advise of the waiter here as well and we weren't disappointed with that either. Thanks guys, a great meal and a great stay.

I wish this was my neighborhood bar and I don't even eat oysters. It's a combination of good vibe, small but good beer selection and delectable small plates. Last time there was a table in the corner, behind the bar, perfect for conversation and keeping an eye out for potential assassins. The Schlafly Extra Stout was a perfect winter's night accompaniment to roasted vegetables and a small plate of gnocchi. The service is laid back, but attentive. In warmer weather the outdoor seating is nice, but makes it harder to be vigilant for ne'er do wells and goons as there is only one wall to watch your back - unless you sit near the street corner, in which case all bets are off.

These guys never fail to please. We've been there a number of times and live close by. Everything is good for whatever mood I have been in. The burger is outstanding, the fries are awesome. The Oyster Chowder is the best I've ever had and consistent time and again. It's also very cool that they have a variety of oysters to choose from each time and they can vary from one trip to the next but they are always fresh and excellent. The staff is pretty knowledgeable on the different oysters and where they're from, what they taste like, what kind of consistency they have. I've also had the veal shank with grits which is comfort food to the max. SOOooooo good. and the bartenders do a great job whether it's a simple drink or one of their signature items. This should be on your "To go to" list. My only complaint: Why aren't you open for lunch?

Let me be open: I don't do oysters. So this review will have no oyster stuff in it. BF went here for an early dinner around 5:30 on a Tuesday night. Besides a couple people at the bar we were the only ones there. Pretty view out the window. BF got the Paris Revisited and I got something with lemon, I don't remember the name of it. My drink was delicious. I didn't care for BF's, but he liked it, so cheers. We ordered a few things to share. Gnocci du jour, the pomme frites (fries), Tandoor salmon, and pasta du jour. And we both said the same thing: we were underwhelmed. The gnocci was ok, not great and not bad, just there. The salmon was probably most disappointing. I was really looking forward to it after all the reviews, but the seasoning tasted exactly like bbq sauce. And I'm not the biggest fan of bbq sauce (I don't hate it, just not my favorite thing). So it was like eating bbq salmon. Which might be awesome for someone else, but not for me. The couscous hushpuppies were really good! I could've eaten 10 of those! The pasta du jour was fettuccine noodles in a white sauce with lobster, shrimp, and vegetables. There was so much sauce. I'm not big on over saucing things. Too much oil, butter, sauce, etc is just wasteful calories, and not needed. Also it's yuck. So we ate "around" the sauce. Vegetables and seafood was fine. We ended up with an inch of just sauce leftover in the bowl. ... I guess to each his/her own, but we were kinda turned off by it. Water glass was empty for a while a couple times. Eh. No one's perfect. I'll let it slide. The fries: amazing. So good. Both of us devoured them. And I NEVER eat "junk food" like fries. I would come here just for fries and that lemon drink I had. Waitress was nice enough. Nothing bad to say or amazing to about her. Polite, around but not intrusive. Cute place. I really wanted to like this more. Maybe we'll try it another time, that'd be ok with me. Although with Sasha's a block away, probably not for a while. Another bottle of cab please!

Oysters, service, ambiance have always been excellent. If you're in the mood for the best oysters and selection in StL then this is your spot and they do have excellent pomme frittes as well!

I came here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to enjoy drinks with a friend outside. First off, the Oyster Bar is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon drinks. It's right next to the park on a slow street and gets plenty of sunshine. If you want the fresh air but less sun, you can sit inside next to one of their open bay windows. Oyster Bar has quite the cocktail list and plenty of drink choices in general. I went with a lemon, ginger beer, and vodka drink that isn't on the menu. It was amazing and perfect for the weather. I can't forget the service! Our waiter was super nice and attentive but not too over bearing. I can't wait to come back and try out the food!

Great little seafood cafe with a superb patio (one of the best when the weather is nice.) The food favors (especially the Manhattan Clam Chowder) make this place a big winner. A solid wine list and friendly bar area make this a neighborhood gem. Best seats are often those right inside the large open windows or in great weather--at one of the handful of nice tables on Demun patio. Service can be good or spotty--depending on who you get. That is the one wild card about this great restaurant--we've had great service and spotty service. Overall, a unique and fun venue. After dinner, grab a drink at Sasha's or Jimmy's on the Park on the same block. Great little treasure of an area in St. Louis. Oysters are also a draw here, but the atmosphere is the reason to return. Prices a tad high for a cafe, but some dishes are well worth it.

I'm jealous of all the people that get to live in Demun and walk here. The decor could use some updating, OK maybe a lot, but it's a very popular neighborhood spot. Stopped by here for brunch, and here's what we ordered: Hang Towne Fry ($11)- how can you say no to bacon, hash browns, eggs, AND fried oysters. This dish is huge, as in you should be sharing it with somebody else or feel a little guilty. Spinach Salad ($8)- beets, goat cheese, spinach, vinaigrette; also great for sharing. Finally Mussels in a garlic beurre blanc broth ($10)- Flavorful broth, lots 'o mussels, and an opportunity to call more friends to have brunch because there are still leftovers. I'd come back to order cocktails, oysters, and most brunch dishes. Dinner looks a bit overpriced.

My first visit here was to get dessert and the beignets were DIVINE My second visit included a savory dishes, and their soups were incredible. A very authentic place.

I stopped by Demun's Oyster Bar in Clayton for after dinner drinks and oysters. I was not expecting much in terms of quality for oysters in this land locked city, but I was happily impressed. The refreshing, crisp Limoncello mule was a tasty accompaniment with the fabulous oysters. They had five varieties of Pacific Northwest oysters, including the popular and delicious Kumamoto oysters. The staff was very knowledgeable about the flavor profiles of each oyster variety and directed me well according to my taste preferences. I sampled Deep Bay, Cranberry Creek, Stellar Bay, and Shigoku oysters, my new favorite. I'm an oyster lover and I definitely enjoyed my experience at Demun's! The staff was very helpful without being pretentious and the ambiance is quaint and inviting. The freshly shucked oysters at Demun's are hands down the best in St. Louis! Exciting to have finally discovered a place in Missouri with excellent, 'just caught from the sea' oysters!

Interesting neighborhood restaurant. The oyster selection was good, but would have liked them served colder. When you have a big milky oyster that's warm is a total turnoff.

I love this bar so much - really, I just want to wrap it up, check it with my luggage and take it everywhere I go. First, the insides are very fetching - the wall covered in mirrors of all shapes and sizes always gets my attention... there's something about the Oyster Bar that gives it this vintage Parisian feel, and I think that the stylistically-haphazard display of mirrors might be a big part of it. Then there's the cocktail program... I mean, c'mon - a limoncello mule? You had me at first glance of your copper mug. But most of all, I like this bar because it's easy. So many things in life are difficult, but our downtime shouldn't be. So rest easy and know that the perfect date place really does exist. That neighborhood bar you haven't yet found? You can stop searching; you have arrived. A special somewhere where time doesn't exist and you'll never overstay your welcome? World, meet your 'just one more' - as it turns out, the nightcap is very much alive and well.

The Demun Oyster Bar wins again. Hands down, the most delicious mussels you can find in the St.Louis area. Service was impeccable as well. We had a dozen freshly shucked oysters, which were delicious. One thing changed though, the champagne minonette tasted a lot sweeter than usual. Too sweet for me, in fact. We found a super affordable bottle of prosecco to accompany our meal, as well as an amazing stout called St. Joseph's. Hubs & I were happier than pigs in $hit. I wish every weekend was our anniversary/ birthday/ Valentine's Day or that I was filthy rich just so I could afford to check this spot out once a week. Hands down, my favorite restaurant in the Lou.

Walked in around 8 on a Saturday and was able to get a table. I like that it's a small place. Service was prompt and friendly. Wine was well priced. Got a bottle of Malbec for 35 which was very nice. Oysters were very good. Also had the halibut. The fish was ok which is the only reason I removed a star and went with 4. The brussel sprouts and potato pancake were very good.

What a great place to hang out when the weather is nice, (and not so nice). Service has always been great, and the drinks are unique too. Fun for date night, or to bring your older / adult children to unwind and have a few cocktails. People watching is fun as well. We sometimes leave early to have a few glasses of wine at Sasha's and walk on over the the Oyster Bar for our rsvp time. Fresh sea food, and for those that do not care for fish, there is a great burger offering along with steak, etc. I'm not one for oysters, but it looks like there is a good selection for folks that do enjoy them. Call me weird, but I like their ice cubes!! They are..... cubes ;-)

Always love coming here for the oysters! Great selection of other seafood as well and have had most of the menu. Great wine and champagne menu along with a few dinner specials! The bar service is great at anytime! The outside area is wonderful on a sunny day when they roll up the doors and everyone can enjoy the air!

Mediocre food: -Happy hour oysters, tasted fresh and at half price, only thing worth getting here; however half price means you're paying about $1.5 for a piece of tiny shell, and there are a few other places that do $1 happy hour oyster deals -Baked oysters with gruyere, the cheese overpowered the flavor of the shellfish by far, what a buffet thing to do -Sweet potato chips, kitchen-made and thinly shaved, which made the layer of oil more obvious; also, I hate salt on sweet potato chips Service: -The server was very nice, but needs to practice more active listening- I asked for a non-alcoholic drink that tasted refreshing like a watermelon basil ginger ale soda I had elsewhere, with the emphasis on non-alcoholic and refreshing, I got back a very citrusy and bitter tasting drink that made me want to puke -To go along with the above point, Demun also needs to hire a real mixologist who doesn't play pretend-kitchen behind the bar

Good drinks, good service, good food. The oysters are flown in fresh regularly and taste delicious. The burger that I had there recently was equally yummy even though burgers aren't their specialty. The ambience is moodier and the decor is classy, with vintage mirrors and old advertisements adorning the walls. It's very clean and the bartenders are knowledgeable. It's a good experience for dinner, especially for couples as this is a small venue. Coming in on a weekend? Best to call ahead and make reservations, just in case. A stones throw from forest park, it's a good stop before or after joining any forest park festivity.

Excellent food and charming setting with amazing wait staff. I felt like I was in a Paris bistro in St. Louis! Had oysters which were fresh and perfect as well as mussels a huge portion that we shared and the fish of the day which was cooked to perfection. I honestly feel you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. Comfortable seating and a charming interior. We arrived at 830 pm on a weekday which by St. Louis standards is late and we did not few the least bit rushed their kitchen is open until 10 I think. Have a very interesting wine and drink list all wines, drinks are unique. Do not miss this if you are in the St. Louis area casual attire is welcome and if you enjoy sitting outside or in demun oyster bar has both options.

Oysters, mussels and wine make for a perfect evening. Add fabulous ambiance and attentive service, you've created DeMun Oyster Bar. It is the perfect place for a romantic evening of two or a fun place for a group of friends. Our recent visit was the latter, a group of friends and we had a blast. Our server was so attentive to our needs, he made each of feel as if we were royalty. Words can not begin to explain how luscious our food was. After 3 different oysters, I would be hard pressed to say which one was my favorite. I might even have to say, I liked the steamed mussels or poached salmon better. Not to mention the Pomme Frites and the Sweet Chips we munched on as well. Oh, I can not forget the Beignets we used to soak up the incredible broth from the steamed mussels. It was a night to remember, even after three bottles of wine. If you're an Oyster lover, treat yourself soon to the magic of DeMun Oyster Bar.

I happen upon this place while strolling around in my new neighborhood, checking out the little shops and restaurants/bars within walking distance. I wasn't very hungry so I stopped in for a glass of wine but ended up ordering the Berkshire pork belly because it sounded so delicious. And it was! I was definitely not disappointed with the flavor of the pork belly. The chilled soba was really good, too. After that, I had to try their white chocolate mousse cake and it was so light and flavorful yet not overwhelmingly sweet! I normally am not a fan of white chocolate but theirs is so different. I can't really describe it, you'll just have to try it for yourself. The service was amazing. They got busy as the evening progressed but the waiter never forgot about me in the corner which was wonderful! I stayed there for a little bit enjoying my foods next to the windows which opened to the patio so I still got some of the breezy feel of the patio seats without the late afternoon sun. Overall, I will give this place a 5-star because I was happy with my service, the food were great, t's convenient, and it's got a lovely atmosphere! I will definitely be back very soon.

I had brunch with my husband, 11 mo old son and in laws. Our experience was mixed. The food (with one exception) was EXCELLENT. Kudos to the chef. However, they were obviously not ready to open at 11 am. Our food took a very long time. My father in law ordered the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise was broken. The rest of our food was delicious. Really spectacular. But the service was meh and they need to wash the bar mats (stinky). Overall, I would go back for a second chance. The croque Madame was the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had.

It's like a taste of San Francisco tucked away in a corner of St. Louis -- intimate, neighborhood spot feel, friendly bartenders always up for a chat, awesome cocktails and great seafood in a laid back but sophisticated atmosphere that reminds me more of the west coast than stop in mid-town St. Louis. Couldn't reccomend it more highly.

I consider the Demun Oyster Bar on my short list of places to visit when I am in St. Louis. Yes, I do come for the oysters and find the true neighborhood setting pretty special. It can be pricey, but I think it still falls in the realm of "you get what you pay for". Tonight's oyster feature is Lovers Creek

What a wonderful establishment! Couldn't have been more pleased with our cocktails, appetizers and our entrees. One of the bartenders is phenomenal. I can't remember his name, but he makes an amazing lemon drop martini! The Caesar salad is wonderful! My husband and I visited several months ago and ordered something off the special board. We came back recently in hopes that something similar would be offered as a special. My husband explained to the chef what I wanted and they made a dish EXACTLY the way I wanted! Hats off to the chef! We will be back!

Food was great. The drinks are very strong so be prepared. Service today was a snail's pace but the only person waiting the table was doubling as the bartender. Expect to wait here. There is definitely no rush. Parking is street but had no trouble finding a spot.

I have really, really come to love this place. It went from being just another bar/restaurant to my favorite neighborhood spot, and it's the best place to spend a laid-back weeknight. Whether I'm sitting with a friend at the bar or being "that person" working on my laptop at a table, everything is consistently superb; the food, the cocktails (definitely the cocktails), the atmosphere and the service. The Oyster Bar's wine list is fantastic and has something to suit every taste, but lately I've been heading straight for one thing: the Lavender 75 cocktail. It's the best drink I've ever had, and is so refreshing and unique. I'm kind of addicted. Since I'm not a seafood lover my menu options are limited, but I do just fine with the winter vegetables, the frites, and the beautifully-crafted spinach salad. I've also tried all three desserts (don't judge) and the pear tart is the best one on the menu. Keep in mind, menu items can change often to keep up with the season. I just love how this place "fits" every single scenario for me. I've been there for drinks with my best friends, dates, to work on my laptop, to have dinner with my parents... well, you get the point. It's just that awesome that it works for everything. Everything from the dim lights to the cool collection of mirrors on the wall creates the coolest & most intimate atmosphere. The staff is helpful, cool and consistent, and I really don't think I have a single complaint. Can't wait for warmer temps so I can take advantage of the patio!

A great evening for a first time stop at Demun. I have been to Jimmy's a couple doors down several times but was willing, for the first time since relocating from the east coast, to try a Midwest oyster bar :) let's see how this goes! Bar looks great walking in from across street but diners are either engrossed with their meal selections or just not having a good night because I can't find a smile or hear a chuckle. Made a reservation and called when running a couple minutes late (sorry a bit OCD regarding being late) but I still got a somewhat cold reception when I walked in. Oh well perhaps the bar staff isn't having fun either.. Our waiter, Dean, was both amazingly knowledgeable, willing to give recommendations, and even smiled!! Finally!! Wife selected a gin based cocktail but I stuck true to my Irish roots and went with a whiskey base (sorry blanking on names but you will find them on menu..) Slight disappointment when we found out no blue points on menu but Dean provided some recommendations that were good size with a buttery finish. Perfect on a warm evening. Split steamed mussels in a chili coconut sauce and amazingly crispy pommes frits for main course. Great meal great evening and a walk through seminary to cap evening. Stop by and enjoy the food, cocktails and people watching :)

I love this place. I live nearby and my boyfriend and I walk here quite frequently for drinks. The food is superb, and always prepared well. They have some of the best chowder I've had in the city. Dinner is a bit expensive for what you get, but it's all delicious. I have had the pomme frites and stuffed fish, and it was excellent. You are better off coming for brunch and not dinner, or drinks at night. The oysters are fresh and I think flown in, so that's a plus too. The service at the bar is always excellent and the bartenders are knowledgeable. I love Prohibition style cocktails, and they have plenty specialty ones on their menu to choose from. They make a perfect Manhattan and Sazerac. Wait staff has been hit or miss otherwise but generally good. Overall, a must go if you frequent the area.

This is a small, intimate place that presents a thoughtful menu and carefully prepared food and drinks. I first tried it during the summer, when I sat outside in the sidewalk seating. A breeze, tasty oysters, good music and an interesting wine list led to a pleasant experience and a note to return. In November, I sat with two friends inside, which has a horseshoe bar around the oyster shucking -- which dominates the space -- and maybe 8 to 10 tables for two or four. Very small. The dim lighting (but not too dim) and small space set the tone for intimate conversation. Don't take someone here that you're not comfortable with; it's too eye-to-eye. On the other hand, the atmosphere is just wonderful for spending time with friends and loved ones. The menu is in scale with the size of the place, which I really like. Anyone could find something here, yet there are maybe 8 to 10 entree choices (plus soups, salads and sides). Each are distinctive and creative. I often set the bar for a restaurant on how well they do the basics. In this case, I tried the Caesar Salad, which, without exaggeration, was perfect. Best I've had in St. Louis. If it were easy to do, you'd get a good one anywhere, but you can't. (Note to self: start list of places for great Caesar salads on Yelp.) This is an indication of the care the chef and staff take toward everything they do. Maybe not everything is a hit, but they are definitely swinging for the fences on each item. That's worthy of my time and dollar anytime. The entree of mussels and clams were ample and the buerre blanc sauce was just great with the char grilled French bread. My friend was impressed with the clam chowder, and another with everything about the duck except the size of the portion. The artful and tasty presentation could not overcome the skimpy portion. Duck is always served in small portions, but I don't think this approached 2 ounces. As I said, hits and misses here, but overall what a great place. I'm definitely going back. Next time, I'll sit at the bar and eat oysters and enjoy champagne by the glass. Kudos to the chefs/owners on making this a personal and distinctive place to dine.

We came here hoping to find great raw oysters, and -- to cut to the chase -- we left disappointed with the oysters and almost everything else. First, about those oysters: they were not fresh. Not only did they have a somewhat fishy smell (as opposed to being merely briny), but one was actually bitter. Not a good sign, to say the least. St. Louis is far from the ocean, I get that, but I've had fantastic oysters at restaurants in Chicago which is equally far from saltwater. We also had the two specials, a mahi mahi with crab and tagliatelle with scallops and manila clams. The mahi mahi was definitely the high point of the meal. The tagliatelle, on the other hand, was practically floating in a soup of cream sauce. Even worse, one of the clams was closed. Any basic cookbook will tell you that this is a sign the clam gave up the ghost some time ago and should be discarded. Overall, not a great experience, particularly considering the price of the meal.

Disappointing overall...I wanted to like the place cause our new residence is within stumbling distance, but I just can't sugar-coat the experience. - Raw oysters came on bed of salt and were fresh, warmer than expected but still pretty good. No points deducted here (although I didn't care for the mignonette sauce, too much acidity, overwhelms the natural taste of the oysters, but that's probably a personal preference more than anything). - Pomme Frites -these just don't taste "right"...Yes I can taste the animal fat they were fried in, but was this really twice-fried?? I don't get the fluffy on the inside and crispy on the other side. It was all fluff in my mouth...cuts were too chunky for my liking. - Steamed mussels and clams - fantastic but why is the whole bowl of food barely luke warm? It came with a few pieces of barely toasted bread. We requested more bread and got three more slices, un-toasted this time and crunched when we tore them up...yep, definitely stale. The broth was fantastic but mostly wasted no thanks to the stingy portioned old bread. Come on! Show some respect to your diners. Don't drop grocery store bread to go with their $$ meals; either get some nicer bread or make them in-house. Don't cheap out on the basic! It's tacky as hell. - Marinated Homegrown Seasonal Tomatoes - Mari- what? These taste like two days old tomatoes from Schnucks rolling in some olive oil and sprinkled with basil. The whole reason we ordered it was that it was "marinated" but did not taste a hint of that. - Beignets - Too dense to be proper; Because the dipping sauce to beignets ratio was too high, most of the sauces went to waste. - Drinks: as it was after 9 PM, we got to enjoy the happy hour drink pricing. We got the bartender's choice. It was a mule, served without lime and had way too much ice, imagining eating ice slushy, could barely taste the alcohol even when digging beyond all the slush....just a really bad drink. House wine was $5...cheap blend but tolerable...wasn't expecting more so it was alright. -Service: our waitress seemed rushed and disinterested. One thing that really irks me about restaurants that have happy hours: If you are gonna offer it, don't try to hide it and force the customer to ask about it. It's really lame. Announce it in a clear place or don't offer it at all. The only two things we had that were "happy hour" prices sucked...looks like they are pretty much half-assing the offer. There. Someone has to break the bad news. Maybe it was an off night....I'm sure we'll be back again. It's hard to write off anywhere within stumbling distance from your house. Next time we'll just get the oysters....prob nothing else. Actually, hold that thought....fast forward three hours and we both crawled into bed with queasy stomachs, not pointing any fingers at the oyster bar but it was the last place we had any food and drinks at all all afternoon....hmm

Popped in 5:45pm on a Wednesday. There was a good crowd but plenty of tables available. There were 4 types of oysters available for $2.50-$3.00 apiece. We ordered one cocktail, the oyster chowder, the fries, and 4 raw oysters. Total price was $37 with tax. The cocktail -- some ginger/vanilla thing. It was OK, not very gingery but quite alcoholic. 3 stars. The chowder -- pretty delicious and chowdery with oysters + potatoes. 4 stars. The fries -- oh HELL yes, these were just awesome. nice and thick and potato-y and steaming fresh. 5 stars The oysters -- Very good. They were quite cold, which is a good thing. The champagne mignonette was a perfect topping and cut down the natural ocean-y flavor. 4-5 stars. Great atmosphere, dim lighting and midtempo electronic music at just the right volume. Place was buzzing with people from all age groups. The service is super friendly & heplful. Our server gave us suggestions and even voluntarily split our cocktail for us in two glasses. My lady said it was a great place for a third date, when a guy is trying to "seal the deal". You know what they say about oysters, people. By 6:30 the place was pretty filled up. Prepare for a wait if you come during prime time. I'll be back the next time I have some money burning a hole in my pocket.

It is hard to go wrong when you're enjoying the beautiful Demun neighborhood on a spring night but the Demun Oyster Bar only made the evening more special. This cozy spot has a worldly feel with cafe style seating and a beautiful bar inside. The wine selection was great and the oyster offerings change daily. For my meal I ordered the salmon entree and was blown away. Absolutely delicious. The service was excellent as well. Whether you are grabbing a drink after work or enjoying a first date, Demun Oyster bar won't disappoint. It is a little small so be prepared to wait on a Friday or Saturday night. Week nights should be fine.

First experience for lunch, very disappointing. Dining with so many flies from the open door we less than pleasant. The Oysters at $3.00 a piece were very very small. The Ceaser salad came missing the Crotini's- which left a bowl of greens and dressing. The Mussels were nice, sauce a little watery. The Beignets were chewy, served with-cold choc. sauce (tasted like nutella), Honey & Raspberry sauce (tasted like to bottom of a jelly jar). Lunch was $53.00 with a beer and a vodka on the rocks.SO NOT WORTH IT. Back to Broadway Oyster Bar for US!!!!!!!!

YUM! I love oysters! My dad, fiance and I went for a Friday night dinner and had a lovely meal. Demun Oyster Bar was getting more and more crowded as the night went on, but we were seated by the window and had a lovely evening. We had 4 oysters each and each oyster was delicious. The Demun Oyster Bar makes a homemade sauce to put ontop of the oysters that had a great bite to it. We also requested some horseradish sauce to add a little more spice. I had the mussels... they were excellent. I had the tomato based sauce and I scooped the sauce up with a spoon and ate it like a soup. My fiance had the Oyster chowder, and he doesn't even like Oysters...it was a big hit. He also had the lamb and the pieces were prepared incredibly well, very tender and juicy. My dad had a piece of fish that was excellent. All in All the oysters were delicious and I will be back for more Raw Bar action... The Mussels as well were fabulous. Great Location, Great Good, Great Atmosphere...as long as you love seafood this is a must go to place.

Awesome place, staff is friendly and knowledgable. Only place for fresh oysters, well, as close to fresh for Midwest as you can get that is. Try the Kumamoto Oysters if they are in. Go!!

I don't like oysters so I assumed I would steer clear of this place forever... until a friend told me they had amazing mussels. Then I promptly planned a trip. Came here on a double date on a Thursday night. The place was so loud we could barely hear each other, which was a pity for me since I had a cough and had lost my voice for the most part. Good thing the food was so good we didn't have to talk. My boyfriend had had raw oysters before but never thought twice about it. I thought he loved them but he had tasted them in passing in China and was surprised to see the board with tons of different kinds of oysters and everyone going on about them. He tried two that the waitress recommended and his life was forever changed. He kept saying he felt like he just "tasted the sea" and that he just understood why people enjoy eating oysters. I, on the other hand, don't ever want a mouthful of the sea. I chose the mussels in the cream sauce but I am an idiot because I forgot I was lactose-intolerant (it's mild for the most part)... My friend raved about the cream sauce and I was hungry so I didn't think twice! My stomach is not very smart. I was enjoying them for a while and then bam! the tummy started acting up and I had to stop. So I stuck to the fries which were pretty damn good. Lucky for me, my boyfriend was on a total high from the oysters and proceeded to eat more than half my mussels, and then finished off the other couple's mussels that they weren't going to eat (that boy has no shame when it comes to food)! He had also ordered a fried oyster poorboy that he gulped down. I wasn't a fan but I think my loverboy had at that point fallen in love with the ocean and all its creatures. The place is nice, very funky with all the mirrors. We did order the oyster chowder that my friend said was amazing but alas, the waitress forgot and it never arrived or showed up on the bill. By the time we realized it, we decided to skip it anyway. Pretty decently priced for the amount of food, and my friend really loves coming here for late night cocktails... It's not just for oyster fanatics!

Having been here once before for oysters and drinks I knew that the service was outstanding how're be this time we ordered good off the menu and it was superb. One of the few places in St. Louis that you can find the Manhattan clam chowder (red sauce) and they do it right! The salt baked fish was amazing and the benigts were an excellent way to finish out the evening.

The location is gorgeous. The oysters, great. But the bar went downhill real quick. I ordered a Sufferin' Bastard and it came out in a Tiki glass. What? It's not a Tiki cocktail. Poorly played. (from 7/16/12)

If you're ok with spending 10-20 bucks on a lunch, this spot's a good place to go to. The mediocre shrimp from past visits now seems to be a thing of the past, as the shrimp po boy had 3 massive specimens. I'm not really sure if anyone is really aware that this place is open for lunch as we were there at 12pm and nobody was there at all. The neighborhood's still pretty awesome on a weekday noon, with better parking! The crab mac'n cheese.... though there only seemed to be shreds of crab in it, was mighty tasty with a bunch of brothy flavor. It was also quite massive, as I proclaimed that I would be able to eat it in one sitting, but it ended up easily being two meals (coworker finished the whole freaking thing, though). Watch out, though, as coming here you can easily let things go out of control and get a drink... and a couple oysters... and BAM you're looking at a $25+ lunch. Yeeeeah... don't want to have to explain that to the wife on a regular basis...

We happened upon this little quaint and wonderful restaurant as we scoped out a place to have dinner. Of course I referred to my YELP app for assistance. Food was good, the oysters were freshly shucked (sp?) and out of this world!! We tried 4 out of the 5 different ones they had that day. I had the Baby Spinach salad with grilled shrimp. It was delicious. I love blue cheese and the blue cheese in the salad was amazing. My husband had a cheeseburger with fries and a glass of wine. I did not hv a drink because of the food prices $$$!! I did not want to have a huge bill. He said the burger was less than average and he actually enjoyed the fries more. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the service was meh and food a bit pricey. $27 for a pasta dish. $3 per oyster. $17 for a small salad with 4 shrimp. $13 for a burger?? We may or may not be back we'll see. We live about 25 miles away and we can get wonderful oysters and fare closer to home for half the price, but I would love to try their Mahi Mahi dishes some day.

Nice drink selection, although their cocktails are small and, let's just say, not a bargain at $10 a pop. I recommend the goat cheese salad, the mussels and the crab mac 'n cheese (the latter can easily feed two people). I also really enjoyed the salmon and veggie plate. Some of the items on their menu are extremely basic, yet pricey. For instance, a small bowl of tomatoes covered in olive oil and balsamic vinegar will run you over $7 with tip. I'd rather use that money to buy a monster Chipotle burrito, but that's just me. Very trendy place, but of course that comes with a price, so be prepared to spend $25+ per person on average.

My absolute favorite neighborhood spot in the summertime (the patio is beautiful, the inside makes me a bit claustrophobic). The wine menu has great options at reasonable prices, and I absolutely cannot get enough of the mussels.

I luv eclectic little neighborhood spots that have charm and personality. Demun Oyster bar does not disappoint! The large half moon bar is the best feature with a few tables inside. Outside, tables are available during warm weather months, with a view of Concordia Park. The decor is old world meets new. Floors are covered with colorful re-purposed tile, the walls are covered with a collection of mirrors and behind the bar is a contemporary oyster bar stocked with several varieties of oysters that are flown in fresh. I'm not the biggest oyster fan, but with the help of fellow Yelpers (Tim & Erin G), I was able to sample some smaller, meatier varieties that convinced me that if you pair the right oysters with a good mignonette, they can be pretty tasty! At Demun Oyster Bar, you can order individual oysters or Chef's Choice sampler platters. It can $add$ up quickly, so if you are on a budget, take some time to figure out how best way to go about ordering. In addition to a sampling of oysters, I ordered mussels, sweet potato chips, and a few KILLER shrimp. I wasn't blown away by the cream sauce that accompanied the mussels, but the mussels were cooked to perfection. The chips were thin and crispy and tasted great with the seafood. Just enough salt. The shrimp were HUGE, but not cleaned as well as I would have expected. The drink menu is unique and Chad, the Mixologist spent lots of time explaining drinks, brands, and substituted ingredients to suit our tastes. I had two of the Lynn's Kisses, that blew me away (in taste and effect). Overall, I had a nice time and atmosphere played a big part. I hear that they serve food until midnight. Nice touch!

It was a wonderful surprise to find a place in St. Louis with quality oysters and other seafood. Normally, I am hesitant to even order oysters in St. Louis due to the lack of proximity to saltwater. As the menu at this place explains however, the oysters are as fresh as humanly possible for STL, they are flown in daily from the west coast. The was a nice wine selection with a wide variety available by the glass. We had a couple of whites that were all quite good. We had the pomme frites (crispy, well salted, and big enough for 3 to share) as well as the seafood platter that included steamed clams and mussels, raw oysters, shrimp, and scallops. All were excellent, with the standouts being the oysters (with delicious mignonette) as well as the mussels that came in a tasty garlic cream sauce. I can't wait to go back and start trying all the different varieties of oysters. I also shared a fried oyster po' boy which was good, although not as outstanding as the seafood platter. Not a bad value though at only $10. Shared an order of Beignets that was an excellent cap to a great meal. Simple, fresh, and with just the right amount of sweetness. Even though they came 2 to an order, the waiter threw in a third due to the fact that one was a wee bit small. Service was prompt even though the place was busy and the waiter was knowledgeable and courteous. Only real complaint would be the lack of reservations, we were lucky to get a table for 3 around 6pm on a Thursday and had we showed up at 7, we would have been out of luck. Will likely be back many times in the future!

So the beautiful wife and I returned to Demun Oyster Bar last night. As one can see from my initial review, our first visit didn't go over so well (at least in my opinion), but, because of the quality of their oysters _and_ that the wife is completely in love with their mignonette, we had to go back. Upon entering, we headed to a couple empty seats at the bar. We were promptly greeted and given menus. The drink offerings were explained, including that their beers aren't listed on the menu. However, the display of bottles on the wall was noted. I asked what dark offerings they had and I went with the Porterhouse Oyster Stout (made with fresh oysters...really. You can look it up). I moved later to the St. Peter's Cream Stout. Both were great beers -- they have probably 15 beers available (all bottles). The wife went with a cocktail, then moved on to Champagne. We started off ordering a couple of three types of oysters (Shigoku, Stellar Bay, and Snow Creek) so we could see what struck our tastebuds' fancies (Shigokus for the wife, Stellar Bay for myself, but they were all excellent). We ended ordering many, many more. One of the staff was out at the airport picking up some other other varieties, but unfortunately they didn't get back before we left. Next time I guess. And of course, the mignonette was fantastic as always. The oyster chowder was sampled again -- we both thought it was better than last time (though I thought it was great last time as well). To the wife's disappointment, I love sitting at bars because 1) I don't care about tablecloths; 2) I like being closer to the booze; 3) despite some places where the bartender can get overwhelmed doing drinks and food, you almost always get better service. And service last night, even with what felt like a nearly full house, was great. With multiple bartenders working, we were consistently looked after. I'll even toss in that atmosphere was better than last time -- the music and lighting both were better (I least I thought it was). My only complaint isn't really Demun's fault, is that oysters are freaking expensive. So if you go in hungry/are a glutton/both, there's a really good chance you're going home with significantly less money. So, all that said, we were both really pleased with our visit and look forward to our next visit, though it might have to wait until the next paycheck comes in...

The oysters were great but everything the service was terribly slow. The pomme frites were too thick to be called pomme frites and really over fried and dry. The oyster chowder was too salty to be drunk and had no special oyster flavor at all. The scallops were not particularly memorable and the fried oysters lacked flavor. I'd say just stick to a nice cocktail and the raw oysters.

My last review lacked detail, so I wanted to make sure everyone knows why the Demun Oyster Bar is worth checking out. First, they stay open late (until 1:30) and even serve food past midnight. If you ask really nice. Or come with a group of cute girls and beg a little ;) Also, the cocktail menu is very different from any other establishment in St. Louis. What really stood out for me was the service. Both nights I was there (yes, I went two nights in a row. So sue me!), the bartenders were extremely attentive and you could tell that they genuinely cared about your experience. I'm sure part of this is because they're new and want feedback on how to improve; however, there's something to be said for just employing nice people. Obviously oysters or shellfish isn't for everyone, but if you are going to indulge, definitely hit up Demun Oyster bar.

Sunny Saturday afternoon, beautiful and warm. I might have a photo.... Either way posted up on the patio me and my bestie were enjoying cocktails created with such finesse by the mixologist hiding behind the bar. We opted for a few eats that in included fried oysters and an order of shrimp. The location on the corner and directly across from the park make it a lovely spot to even order to go and bring a blanket to sit in the park. I'll have to visit again and sample more items...can't wait!

I went here twice in the first week I discovered it!! First experience was much better than the second (almost a disappointing second actually), and I will just combine the two in my review for convenience's sake. Decor: Fantastic patio bordering the place since it stands on a corner. Inside is a small dark cozy place with a large open bar with plenty of barstools around it. In the middle of the bar is the oyster shucking station. It's an interesting feel, because it combines a nicer place + beachy side + bar all in one. Service: During my first visit, we were the ONLY ones there (bar 2 guys who were drinking by themselves) and it was fantastic fun because the bartenders were so nice and it was quiet and private. At my second visit, there were loud boisterous drunk people at the bar, and even though we were the only ones seated at a table, our waiter was barely to be seen. I think what really disappointed me was this second visit's service because he just wasn't that nice/friendly. Bad day? o.O Food: First off, they have a nicely sized alcoholic menu with a good number of beers and wines. - Oysters: they change them daily because they get a shipment in everyday (crazy, I know). I've tried about 3 of them, but my favorite is the Kumomoto raw. It is tiny, but SO tender, light and refreshing. Be careful with that side topping they give you- it's some sort of light sauce that they freeze and then shave off for you to complement on your oyster as a granite topping- trust me on this, a little goes a loong way. The oysters are my favorite part :) - Lobster tail with eggs: It really reminds me of a breakfast dish because of the eggs. It's not too heavy and even though it's a 'half-tail', it's actually a perfect amount of lobster. I'd recommend this dish! - Oyster chowder #1 (non-creamy): There are 2 soup options and I don't remember what they call it, but the non/creaminess will be my distinction. I had this non-creamy one at my first visit and it was delish, very generous portion of oysters at the bottom of the bowl. - Oyster chowder #2 (creamy): This one is definitely the better soup because I love creamy! The thing is, though, is that it's this great balance of creamy but still brothy so it's not a super-filling SanFran chowder. Unfortunately, they only gave me like 4 oysters in this or something and the rest were potatoes (this.. was on my second visit). Disappointment galore! - Fries: These are delish! Thank you Old Bay. Overall: The greatest thing about this place is that their kitchen STAYS OPEN. It is HUGE that I can eat at midnight since I forget to eat at normal dinner times sometimes (heh). BUT I would never come here again when there are a lot of people because it just gets loud, annoying and the service suffers. Otherwise, their food (read: oyster dishes) are fantastic.

Let me start by saying the food and atmosphere were exceptional. The raw oysters are amazing and the sauce was a bit unusual as I am a traditionalist (cocktail sauce, horseradish and lemon for me) but worked very well. I've seen bigger mussels but the cream broth was very tasty. However, the service was sub-par. It was my birthday and while I am not the type of person to really announce the occasion, my girlfriend told the manager that it was my first time at Demun, and that we were celebrating. I didn't expect much but even TGI Fridays will throw you something on the house for a b-day celebration. Yet, I didn't receive as much as a "Happy Birthday". I feel somewhat silly for making a deal out of this but it was more about the lack of hospitality to a place that should know better. When your in the service business, it's Restaurant 101 to go beyond and do the little things that make a big difference, especially with the amount of money my amazing gf shelled out for the evening. Thumbs up on the food, a shameful wag of the finger for service. For the price, I'll be sure to celebrate future birthdays elsewhere.

Do not count Demun Oyster Bar out if you do not like oysters! I had the best experience there last night and I do NOT like oysters!! So we walked in on a completely frigid evening and we greeted by multiple members of the staff. We asked if they had happy hour and they said yes and the closer we sat to the back the warmer we would be. Since I was freezing, I was very happy for the tip! This place is so cute! Very quaint and eclectic. It seems like a French theme to me, and I love it! There are mirrors and cute little light fixtures all over, and if I remember right even some hanging candles. The bar is absolutely gorgeous and found out later in the night it was designed by the owner. Very cool. We definitely would have opted to sit there but it was pretty crowded. I was surprised by how great their happy hour deals are! I'm pretty sure it was $5 wine (1 choice of red, 1 choice of white), a $2 Schlafly pick, and a $6 "choose your own", which is actually just a cocktail on their menu. My friend got it and loved it and I got the $5 white wine. It was a french blend, and soooooooo good! We were hungry so we also got oysters, shrimp cocktail, and scallops. My friend got two raw oysters. She said they were awesome. I got 2 fried oysters, because hey, even if you don't like oyster's, anything is good fried! The sauce was the best part. It was a kind of horseradish looking sauce and really added some kick and flavor. The scallops were very good as well. The shrimp cocktail = OUT OF THIS WORLD! It tasted fresh from the sea! And so clean!!!! (In my opinion, shrimp can taste dirty). It came with an awesome cocktail sauce. You will not regret ordering the shrimp cocktail! I can't wait to go back when the patio is open (or tomorrow!) and spend hours here discovering more items!!

I can't believe I've been here 4 years and this is the first time I've visited the Demun neighborhood. And what a great restaurant to start at. If it hadn't been out of desperation, I probably would not have ever come here. I'm not really a fan of seafood, much less oysters. But when it's 10'o'clock at night and you have't eaten dinner yet, you become a little desperate. So for the sole reasons that DOB was close by and didn't close until 1am (and had such great ratings on Yelp!), we decided to pay DOB a visit. Let's not try and avoid the fact that Demun Oyster Bar is slightly pricey. I ordered 3 smallish (literally like a bite) oysters and each were about $2.50 to $3 each. But! They do have a really good reason why it is so expensive. Apparently, the oysters are super, super fresh and they get them flown in everyday. Out of the three oysters we ordered, the Zumamotto oyster (raw) was a standout. I also ordered the oyster chowder and the pomme frites. The oyster chowder was good, no doubt, but I wish it had been a creamier broth (but this is a personal preference and not necessarily a knock on the dish itself). The pomme frites were decent (don't get why it's standout), but I don't really get the fascination with Old Bay seasoning. Loved the food. Loved the service (the people working were incredibly friendly and helpful by telling us to order oysters that we would actually like). Might not want to come back and eat too often but definitely would come back just to have a drink. They have a crazy good beer and wine list.

well, we went back.... it was a sunday night, four tables in the whole place, including ours. and we were attended to quite casually, but well. we even were brought a small bowl of water for our dog without requesting one. the waiter was knowledgable and friendly and the recommendations were right on the money. If you don't like Oysters, there are a multitude of things to choose from instead. My girlfriend had her first raw oyster, and was instructed thoroughly how to proceed with the endeavor. and I had and enormous bowl of some of the best mussels i've had since I was in key west years ago, and the bread was put to good use to soak up some very tasty broth. we sampled off the individual pieces menu as well as the entree menu. all dishes were better than average or very close to amazing. there is a pesky street lamp on the patio that cycles on and off which is quite annoying, but i'm not sure what the establishment can do about that. and our service did wane as we lingered on a second round of drinks after dinner because, what seemed like our waiters girlfriend or date showed up and sequestered attention away from seeing if we would like to settle up. 30 minutes is a bit long to sit at a table at the end of the night when you are the only table left in the place without a waiter asking if you'd like anything else or the bill. overall, if was a superb dinner on a wonderful relaxing sunday evening. and I have to say that we were also grateful that they are open til 11pm on a sunday, with the kitchen closing at 10. a far cry from our former experience there, and could have been a five star review with just a little more follow through, .....it started off great.....the middle was great....and then the ball was dropped a little at the end. we'll be back for sure for the food, and just not expect to be wowed on other fronts.

Sooo, you're grossed out by oysters. They're raw, they can kill you, they're expensive. I get it. I once thought this way. But there was once a time before I tried sushi, and eel, and before I experienced heaven in my mouth too. Shame on you if you knock em before you try them! But try them right; try them at someplace like Demun. My mom introduced me to oysters a few years back, and bless her heart! She mixes extra horseradish into the cocktail sauce and heaps it onto the delicacy. This is my favorite way to enjoy the oyster. No hot sauce; you don't need crackers. I even prefer this to the delicious champagne mignet that Demun makes as an accompaniment to their little gems. So, what better place to take my Mom for her birthday than the new oyster bar? It did not disappoint. Both the service and the food were above and beyond. I arrived early with some candles stashed in my purse to slip to the waiter, Josh or Michael I think? It was a while ago, but he was so attentive, adorable, and helpful. First, he suggested his favorite cocktail which is slightly modified from the one on the menu (I love that:). It had gin muddled with ginger and lavender and lemon and some fizz to it! Perfect delicious refreshment. Then came the oysters, and more oysters, and more oysters. We went on a Monday, which I wouldn't recommend as the waiter informed me that they have seafood shipped DIRECTLY to them 6 days a week, so Monday must be the off day because they were down to only three varieties of oysters. But it didn't take us long to realize that the Fuko Moto? oysters were stealing the show. I have never experienced a creamy oyster before, and honestly it freaked me out at first. But then it settles into your mouth and you just want more! The entrees also rocked, esp. the salmon! A total re-invention. Poached, not grilled and boring like everywhere else. Fresh kale as the side was perfect. The grand finale, 3 delicious beignets all lit up for my mom! And the owner sent over a sample of grilled oysters! Nice touch. Since the St. Louis fish market closed, my family has been adrift for seafood occasions. We are so glad to have found this new special spot. Love, love, love :) And the decor, ambience and patio are delightful.

Amazing seafood - the scallop is to die for, fresh oysters. I love that you can order in small pieces/items so you can try variety of seafood. The only negative is that the service is extremely slow - I've been here several times and it's slow every time.

This little gem is not only beautiful, but their new menu is well executes. Nate, the bartender was very friendly and tok great care of us. The new menu includes brunch and lunch during the day. My friend went for the country friend steak with an egg on it and a side of house cured bacon. when it arrived, I totally had food envy! But my ceasar salad was perfectly dressed and delicious, and the lobster roll with fries was exactly what I wanted. Demun has had a new chef since last summer, and you can tell he's dedicated to his craft. I can't wait to go back.

Being from the West Coast, I know what good oysters taste like and the ones from DOB are a little bit scary. We ordered a variety and they were served on ice. The oysters were warm, which was really unappetizing. We had a chicken dish, which was not bad, but we were severely disappointed in the oysters. Not sure if I would ever go back here. Bummer.

This place is all sorts of awesome. It's also conveniently located to campus, so it's on-the-ready to compensate for bad days. I love oysters. I've brought groups here. One of the friends I brought said that this place offered his first positive seafood experience in St. Louis (he's a New Yorker, and has been here for almost two years). All my other friends like it, too, though. The decor is spectacular. It's really charming. I love the shape of the bar, and the tables. The floor tiles are just as gorgeous. And (snap!) on a nice day, all the windows flip open, making this an easy, breezy place. Last time I went (within the last week), they had two special $7 off-menu cocktails, one featuring my current favorite whiskey (Whipper Snapper, from Oregon, fyi), and Tiger Blood, to commemorate you-know-who. I was amused. As for food, it pretty much all rocks. I love oysters (as I said before), and these are fresh. They might be a little pricey, but hey, we're in St. Louis. I haven't seen any oyster beds here (nor do I think I would trust what came out of them if there were). The fries taste like potatoes. The steamed mussels are fabulous, especially with the cream sauce. (Dip your fries in that!) Fried shrimp and fried oysters are good (especially on the fried oyster caesar salad.) And the best part? I just found out that they'll be open for lunch every day, starting THIS coming Monday! WOOHOO!!!

My dad and I went back last night, and it was still just as great as the first time! We went with 4 of each of the oysters that were available. Delicious! So fresh and amazing...just what an oyster should be. Adding a touch of horseradish added a kick that was pleasant without overpowering the taste of the oyster. We also ordered the pomme frites, which were crispy and cooked to perfection. We decided to order some of the scallops to go along with our meal. Hmm. While they weren't terrible, they weren't the best I've ever had, either (look at my reviews of Acero and Terrene for that). They were too chewy for me; I want my scallops to be like buttah, baby! But if you're new to scallops, these will do just fine. I still don't particularly recommend them, however. Service was friendly and efficient. No complaints there!

Sorry to hear that J Summer had a bad food experience. Hopefully you said something to the staff and not just pontificated about your culinary expertise. However, I have never had the issues that you have. I frequented DOB because of the delicious fried oysters; mine were always very hot and never overcooked, but extremely tender. I've also had the pomme frites and they were perfect.

Went for dinner on a nice summer weekday night. Great location, relatively easy parking since it's a primarily residential area. The patio seating was nice and the floor-to-ceiling windows open outward letting in lots of natural light and outside air. We didn't order any drinks or sit at the bar so this will have to be a review focused primarily on the food. Oysters: A few West Coast varieties (Shigoku, Deep Bay, etc at $2.50/each) and one East Coast (Otter Creek $3/each) were available. The Deep Bays on this Monday night were the best but overall the oysters were solid. The icy red onion vinegar dressing (for lack of a proper name) was pretty good, don't let the ice melt too much though; the oysters taste better when the dressing is drizzled with the cold ice rather than being watered down. As I didn't expect the greatest oysters in the middle of North America and not on the coasts, I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied with what I found here at Demun. Small plates: - Lobster with Eggs Two ways: Interesting dish. Half tail of lobster with a nicely fried egg over three pieces of toast on a bed of greens with a lobster sauce/dressing. Topped off with a small scoop of caviar. Everything was cooked well but I wasn't a huge fan of the lobster sauce. Tasted good but the $15 is probably better spent on...well, more oysters. - Steamed Mussels and Clams: Really good. On the recommendation of the waiter, chose the garlic buerre blanc sauce over the tomato shallot broth. Really, really good. Comes with a small serving of their pomme frites, which are also very good, and the overall portion is quite sizeable with lots of clams and lots of mussels. Definitely worth the $14. Did I mention this menu item was really good? - Manhattan Clam Chowder: Chunky with lots of veggies, several clams, and well spiced. Solid soup. - Oyster Chowder: Well flavored if maybe a little too salty with a few oysters and oyster chunks. I also found this soup to be a little thin, but I prefer creamier, thicker chowders. Service was fantastic, prompt and very helpful. Overall the food was pretty good and I would choose to visit again, maybe try a large plate or two. With their food and atmosphere, Demun Oyster Bar is a great place to wile away a couple hours on some seafood. Four stars as it's definitely worth a visit if you live in the St. Louis area.

As a resident of Demun, I was anxiously awaiting the opening of our newest little restaurant. When I walked in the first night they opened I was taken aback by how charming it is... it's like walking into a bistro in New Orleans and has to be the loveliest little restaurant St. Louis has seen in a long time. I love the decor. And I love any restaurant that provides an atmosphere that transports you. The food is fantastic and they didn't miss a detail, right down to the adorable china the food is served in. It's obvious the owners have a passion for oysters and want to share the love with St. Louisans. The wine list has a good number of wines and champagnes by the glass, and the cocktail list makes me want to try everything at least once. I've been back a couple of times already and enjoyed the Crispin's Manuscript, Green Tea Goddess and the Lavender - which is dangerously delicious in that it's hard for me to move away from it and try something else. They've also got beer if you're looking for something a little more casual...even an Irish Oyster Stout which I thought was cheeky and cute of them to offer. Honestly, the Demun Oyster Bar looks like it's always been here, and I can't wait to see it in the spring when the floor-to-ceiling windows are open and the patio is set. I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood I love so much, and it has quickly become just one more thing I love about living here. Get yourselves to Demun and check it out.

I just had a great first-time experience at Demun Oyster Bar. Everything from the service to the food was top notch. We started out with an appetizer of a variety of oysters. I've always loved oysters, but if I'm being honest with you, I didn't know that there were so many different varieties. It was great getting a chance to taste the subtle differences between the different oysters. I also had a cup of the oyster chowder. Honestly, the cup could serve two. Luckily, I was hungry tonight and easily downed the large cup portion - it isn't as thick as a normal chowder, but the flavors were great and the oysters were plentiful. Finally, the star of the show. The poached salmon fillet...this is most likely the best salmon I've ever tasted. The flavors were great and the salmon was juicy and tender. The salmon had that melt in your mouth taste. I don't know if I've ever had such a great meal before at a place that has no level of pretentiousness whatsoever. I'll definitely be back!

Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my mother. Our food was a pertinent reminder of St. Louis' culinary inadequacy, especially when it comes to seafood. I've lived here most of my life. However, I'm well traveled and all of my relatives, including my parents, are from New England. So, I do know the difference between good seafood and bad seafood. And I can determine if and when a restaurant is all about appearances and nothing else. I usually dine out at least once a week and routinely try new restaurants in hopes of finding a gem in this good food forsaken city. When I do find an adequate new restaurant in St. Louis, which is almost never, I make it a point to share my experience with others. I've never formerly complained about a restaurant before, as I'm so frequently dissatisfied with my dining experiences in this city. But I'm going to make an exception here, because I'm tired of defending my hometown to outsiders and to myself. I think of "new" restaurants (ones that are five years old or under) in St. Louis as experiments. Most of these experiments are quite popular for the first few years, but usually by the fourth or fifth year, they die down. Eventually, their "newness" wears off, everyone's tasted and rated the food, and people come to terms with their minor disappointments--which, over the years, have racked up. Then, customers drop like flies. They become conscious of the experiment's mediocre, inauthentic food and over priced drinks. They realize they can find better tasting food at more established restaurants that have survived the occasional poor rating and perfected their menu. This is a highly unusual cycle and one that is unique to St. Louis. In places like New York City, Boston, and even Providence, the restaurant business is more competitive because people up north, I've found, are more particular about their food. After all, we are one of the unhealthiest cities in the nation. New Englanders care more about what they eat than the area in which they are dining. Food is typically not over priced, portions are generous, and taste is everything. I've also observed that New Englanders aren't pretentious about eating. Lobster rolls, for example, are considered a delicacy in St. Louis (judging by their exorbitant price at Demun Oyster Bar), whereas up north, they're akin to hot dogs. These delicious, buttery-toated sandwiches are sold at street side vendors for $5 and are usually eaten standing up. Location is key, but taste is really what we're paying for, right? Demun Oyster Bar is, without a doubt, located in a prime area. It is close to two established restaurants and one coffee house. Location and the fact that they are among other established businesses is probably the only thing going for them. There are very few prime areas in St. Louis, since most of the actual city is too dangerous for al fresco dining. The only upscale urban areas are Clayton, Maplewood, Old Webster, Central West End, and the Loop (the latter becoming more dangerous). So, owning a restaurant in Clayton is almost an excuse in and of itself for bad, over priced food. Where else can diners enjoy their safety, security, show off their BMW's, and get hit on by rich old men? Are we paying for aesthetics and safety? Should we be grateful to dine in an urban area without having our purses stolen from the backs of our chairs? Now for the food. My mother ordered a cup of vegetable soup, which she enjoyed. I on the other hand ordered fried oysters--the ultimate test of culinary competence--as usually only coastal restaurants achieve the delicate balance between under and over cooked. As predicted, Demun Oyster Bar failed miserably. The oysters were way over done, the breading terrible, the dipping sauce overpowering. The taste and appearance of this creation was much like that of a hush puppy's--cakey and stiff. Furthermore, who knew that you could mess up french fries? They must have been left overs from the day before, because, well, given that they were burnt, they were also cold and soggy. You would think that overdone fries would be hot and crispy. But no, these were as flabby as an old person's skin. Disgusting, to say the least. And I was extremely disappointed with the price! Combined, our lunch was a whopping $25!! I had five oysters, a small order of fries, and my mother had a cup of soup. We also didn't order any beverages. In my opinion, if this was Boston, Demun Oyster Bar would've long been gone. I left feeling robbed, cheated out of what could've been a good dining experience. What was even more insulting was the kitchen. On my way to the bathroom, I caught a glimpse of a filthy, messy, crowded kitchen. It was cognitively dissonant, since the interior of the place is utterly breathtaking. I suppose I was right all along--it truly is all about appearances. But when it comes to the nitty gritty, like cleanliness and food, Demun Oyster Bar isn't all that it appears to be

Cute place. OK food. Overpriced. I will go back, but not in a rush. Sweet potato chips were burned, calamari was fine, but nothing special. My big disappointment was the linguine with clams. The flavor is just...off. Too sour. I LOVE linguine with clams...a little white wine sauce, a little garlic, a little cheese. Now that I'm thinking about it, can't wait til my next trip to I Fratellini for their linguine with clams.

I really liked this place. It has great energy, the service was outstanding and the food was really nice. It was cold and they had a heater @ my feet! They had a great wine selection including a nice Orin Swift blend which was de-lish. Dinner & service were both great.

Two visits last week, first-ever Yelp review...my wife summed it up best when she said, "can you believe we can $&#%-ing WALK here!?". The scene is just right for us as a couple or meeting a friend, and I suspect would also be great for a large party should you find the room. Like Taste in Benton Park or Brasserie in the west end, you don't feel like you're in St. Louis when you sit at the rounded bar at DOB. It's just dark enough to make drinks with a friend a little odd at first. Simple atmosphere highlights the French tile on the floor which must have been re-done or imported, classes up the place in a big way. The service was kind, still learning their oysters, obviously well-managed...all the servers had a consistent theme to then way they presented the oyster choices..."try kumomotos, i like them because they are clean and I'm new to oysters" The same was true for the service around the wine list..."I really enjoyed the Malbac, it was well-balanced." The wine was great and the four different oysters we ate were outstanding. The shrimp cocktail was classic and perfectly prepared. The steamed clams were awesome in the garlic beurre blanc. Next time we will try the scallops or maybe just grab another glass of wine and a dozen oysters. Really glad this place opened in demun.

If you are looking for atmosphere and a great meal of seafood, you have found it! We visited the Demun Oyster Bar, around 6pm on a Saturday. Just a FYI-They do not take reservations. We got a perfect little spot right by the window. I love the decor of this place, very cute with lots of antique touches. They have a whole wall of different sized mirrors...I might have to incorporate that into my house decor! We ordered the Seascape platter, which includes 3 HUGE shrimp, 3 oysters, two scallops, and a bowl of mussels/clams. I found all of it to be quite delicious. The scallops were cooked perfectly, the mussels/clams were in a delicious creamy sauce, and the oysters were fresh as expected. I enjoyed a nice glass of Rose Cava, then went on to a German white wine after that. The men in our group approved of the beer list that included local microbrews. Next visit, I want to try one of their signature cocktails. We had great service and by the time we were finished the place was packed. I think this restaurant is going to fill a nice little niche in St. Louis. I am looking foward to the warmer months, when we can sit outside on their sidewalk patio.

Terrible. Came this past Friday night Oct 4th for a birthday dinner. We wanted to try somewhere new and yelp showed good reviews. They were completely understaffed and service was awful. It took forever for someone to come to our table to take our drink order, our drinks werent ever filled, and it took forever for someone to bring us our check at the end. The food was just ok. For spending a lot of money, I would expect the food to be amazing. But the portions are small and the food is expensive. My friend ordered stuffed oysters and served them on a bed of salt. Who would want to eat a big hunk of salt with their meal? Total disappointment and waste of money.

I'll make this short and sweet. Service was too slow and the food was way too expensive for those tiny portions - we won't be back

Very dissapointed, everyone at our table of four was. Fresh oysters were average at best. Oyster poor boy had four oysters with heavy breading, stale bread, so dissapointing. If your name has oyster in it your oysters should be better than this. Atmosphere was good. Long John Silvers-ish

Food is ok. Service still has some serious kinks to work out. Sort of over priced for what it is. Cocktail menu is the best aspect of the menu. Food menu is verbose, and yet somehow totally unhelpful. Almost entirely seafood, no veggie option. Likely will only go back for drinks and outdoor seating.

Fresh Kusshi oysters in St. Louis? I never would have thought they'd be as good as they were, but after spending a bunch of time in Northwest searching out fresh bivalves, I was amazed that I found fresh, tasty ones in St. Louis. On top of that the space was really nice, with open windows on the park and nice bar set up. Nate was a talented barkeep mixing up tasty cocktails and recommending nice wine pairings for the oysters. We remarked that the feel of the place could have been anywhere: San Francisco, Boulder, DC, Seattle, etc. Highly recommended.

Just came back after having an early dinner. What a disapointment. The server was very nice but everything else was sub par. For instance, it was sooo hot in the restaurant. Do they not have air conditioning? Well the heat and fish brought flies...lots of flies. Have you ever tried to eat a meal constantly brushing away flies? The appetizers were ok...nothing stunning. We had the mussels and clams in white sauce. There were 2 clams and the rest were museels which were cold but the white sauce was warm. The bread that came with it looked like it came from schnuks and wasn't toasted nicely. How hard is it brush a layer of olive oil on the bread and toast it? But the dinner was atrocious. I had the salmon with lemon grass, soy and fresh vegetables.the veggies were carrots and green beans that were not fresh at all. I give the yard rabbits fresher carrots then the ones that were in my meal. Can you imagine eating week old veggies? The salmon was soaked in soy. Not lightly dressed in soy. There was at least half a bottle of soy on the fish. They don't have any blinds on the windows so you get the sun hitting you. Here are my recommendations to the owner: 1) have a presence at your restaurant...greet your guests and let them know you. 2) invest in air conditioning and place shades on your windows so the sun doesn't constantly hit your customers faces. 3) this is a seafood restaurant. Fish brings flies...invest in fly zappers. 4) attention to detail..... If you are going to provide toasted bread make it special. Not schnucks crappy bread. Go the extra step... Lightly apply olive oil and seasoning and toast appropriately. Your customers will appreciate it. 5) serve fresh vegetables. Really... How hard is that. Don't compromise on quality. 6) your a seafood restaurant...wouldn't you want your fish to speak for itself? Drenching it in soy is horrible. When my wife and I go to a restaurant, we want to experience something better then we can prepare at home and I believe most patrons feel the same way. What I experienced was horrible almost unedible. I am not a chef but I expect edible food when I go out to eat. If the owner would like to reach out to me my email is njoms@att.net .

I live super close to Demun, so I love being able to say I live close to this gem! Their wine list is awesome, at least 4 sparkling wines by the glass at any time. I've had the scallops, mussels, 3 or 4 different oyster types, pomme frites, and the beignets and they have all been fantastic! Sitting at the bar is the best because everybody is usually friendly and I really like watching the kitchen folks shuck oysters! Laila and Chad are awesome bartenders and it's always fun to try a new drink they've created. Their late night happy hour is pretty awesome and the fact they serve food late in a city that seems to be in bed by 10 every night

Incredibly fresh oysters: isn't that what an oyster bar is about? Had one each of seven available plus an extra of a favorite: they were all wonderful, enjoyed with just a couple drops of fresh lemon. Steamed mussels with garlic/buerre blanc were excellent: plump and the broth was also excellent. Oyster chowder very tasty but mostly delicious broth, very few but very perfect oysters. Wine list resonably priced. Picking up your oysters at Lambert daily is expensive, and they were priced from $2.50 to $3.50 each: somewhat expensive, but frankly worth every penny. Ate at the bar (would prefer stools with backs) and the service was excellent: Lila was well informed on the oysters and how each tasted, and also a good bartender as we watched her make numerous drinks for other patrons. The oyster shucker is devoted to his task and does not hurry, preserving the briny liquor of each oyster in its shell: perfect! Chatted with other staff and all were friendly and informed. Too bad the oysters arrive late in the day: I could see me having a few for lunch......often. Overall ambiance is comfortable bistro. If you love raw oysters, this is the only place to go in St Lou.

My brother and sil came into town from Chicago and I wanted to impress them with what St.Louis can offer. Not the easiest feat but I had the Demun Oyster Bar to back me up. First of all, the atmosphere is awesome. The decor is eclectic and charming, the music upbeat but not too loud, and the wait staff very friendly. We sat on the patio and perused the menu while our waitress Yosenia told us all about the specials and made recommendations. Since we couldn't decide what to order we all decided to share everything and she made a point of bringing us extra plates. I ordered the local marinated heirloom tomatoes, sautéed spinach and sweet potato chips. The others ordered the goat cheese medallion salad, fresh oysters all around and the plum salmon on a bed of seasonal vegetables. First, where are these tomatoes coming from? They blew my mind! I have been growing tomatoes for years and have never tasted anything as good as these! The oysters are apparently flown in everyday and I don't remember what kind we had but it was agreed all around that they taste amazingly fresh. The spinach was sautéed in lemon and sprinkled with fresh parm, I didn't want to share it. Sweet potato chips were very crisp and not at all greasy with just a sprinkle of sea salt. Apparently the salmon was wonderful via my brother who polished it off in record time. I would have to say the goat cheese salad was my favorite dish though. Crisp lettuce, carrots, more heirloom tomatoes with a dressing that pulled it all together in the most flavorful way. The goat cheese medallion on top was warm and crisp and I loved that there was enough cheese to last throughout the whole salad. We decided to have desert and coffee to end the meal. We ordered one of everything (seriously). Passion fruit sorbet- no words to describe how refreshing this is! Peach gallate(sp?) took some time to come out but we were forewarned by our waitress this was because they are made at the time ordered. It had a scoop of hazelnut vanilla ice cream on top and was the perfect accompaniment to our coffee. Beignets with 3 dipping sauces came out light and airy. Then there was the trio mousse cake. OMG. Decadence! Berry sauce and whip cream and 3 different kinds of chocolate. My brother actually giggled at one point because it was so good. (He is a professor at Loyola if that tells you anything). Take that Chicago. So overall, yes 5 stars.

I had been excited to try this place since I learned it was opening a few months ago, and I'm happy that it met my expectations. I went the first week they opened (a few weeks ago), and while they had a few kinks to iron out, it was a very pleasant experience. Food: The oysters were fresh and fabulous, and included plenty of variety. We also ordered the chowder, which was great (subtle, nuanced, and satisfying), and some mussels and fries. Note that the fries must be ordered separately, and are plentiful (overwhelming). I would love to see the menu change to include a half order of fries automatically with an order of mussels (moules et frites should always be served together). I think we got the mussels in the saffron broth, which was fine, but the flavors didn't stand out as much as I had hoped. Next time I would go with the standard white wine/garlic/tomato broth. The fries were awesome - thin, crispy, well-seasoned, and not too greasy. We ended with the beignets, which were burnt, far too dense, and honestly a little flavorless. The honey sauce would have been nice if there had been more of it. Dessert takes it down from five stars, but hey, it's not a dessert place anyway. Drinks: I had a girly cocktail that involved creme de violette and bubbles. It was tasty and well-executed, and all of the drink options - cocktails, wines, beers - looked attractive. The wine menu leans heavily toward whites, which is to be expected for a seafood place. Service: We sat at the bar, and found the service to be fine - quick, polite, and not overbearing, but not worth five stars. Our server didn't really know the difference between the different styles of oysters, or even what our ordering options were (we wanted to try one of each before committing, and she wasn't sure that was possible; it was), but it was her first night and she asked someone else, and it didn't make the whole experience unpleasant. Ambience/decor: This is fine, if a little trendy. Logistics seemed to be a problem - the tables were quite close together, and the servers and bartenders kept running into each other because of the tight spaces behind the bar. Watching the shucking happening behind the bar was neat though, and I like that they sourced the glass locally from Third Degree. The food was great, and it's in the neighborhood, so I'll definitely be back.

I've been there twice this week. The oysters were fantastic. I am used to ordering oysters and they are brought to me with lemons, hot sauce, cocktail sauce and crackers. Not here! You choose the type of oyster you want (about 5 or 6 choices) and they are brought out with a tasty traditional sauce that enhances the flavor of the oyster and doesn't hide it. The service was great. The pomme frites were delicious and the oyster chowder was also very good. The oysters are harvested in the AM off the coast of Washington and California and flown to St. Louis and served the same day. Very Fresh! That explains the higher than expected price, but I understand the price after hearing the explanation regarding the freshness of the food. I definitely recommend it. I wish they served a Budweiser and some Gulf oysters. Bud because I like it, and Gulf Oysters to support our brothers in Louisiana suffering from the after effects of the oil spill.

Louis!

They are..... cubes ;-)

Always love coming here for the oysters! Great selection of other seafood as well and have had most of the menu. Great wine and champagne menu along with a few dinner specials! The bar service is great at anytime! The outside area is wonderful on a sunny day when they roll up the doors and everyone can enjoy the air!

Nice touch!

The location is gorgeous. The oysters, great. But the bar went downhill real quick. I ordered a Sufferin' Bastard and it came out in a Tiki glass. What? It's not a Tiki cocktail. Poorly played. (from 7/16/12)

Stopped by after golf for the first time. Place was empty so service was good. Excellent food but expensive - $77 for three appetizers and 2 drinks. Will go back but not often because of the cost but the food was first-class.
