I went with a large group to enjoy a birthday party. 20 of us sat around two large grills. I felt like sushi and they did let me order from the sushi menu instead of eating the cooked steaks and fish. Service was entertaining... pretty much on even par with any other grill of this type. The grilled food was average. Drinks were stiff. Rolls that I ordered were very good. It's fun to go as a group, but as Natasha K. points out, for rolls, Nippon Tei is a better option when in west county.

This place has both Sushi and Hibachi Show style. I prefer to go there simply for the artistic and excellent presentation of their Sushi. Their Sushi lunch special is superb. The decor is very nice and great for a business lunch or dinner out with your significant other.

Love this place, Jay and his family make you feel like part of their family. The fish is always fresh and the Habachi is very entertaining. The decor is great very relaxing and inviting. A must when in Chesterfield

We went to Oishi after checking it out on Yelp. Boy, were we disappointed. The fish was not fresh. The rolls tasted pre-made. They used imitation crab. They charged $1.50 for extra spicy mayo. A bunch of the rolls on the menu are made with salmon and the only option for substitution was yellow fin, even if we were willing to pay. Their rolls were boring...no real surprises or anything unique about any of them. They weren't willing to add chile to the pad thai. Very, very disappointing. Will NOT be going back.

Great food great service. But 10 min after we left every member of our lunch group got explosive diarrhea. Its been years since i last got food poisoning from japanese food and i eat it all the time. Consider yourself warned.

We love it. Hubby gets the dynamite and I get the volcano--best of each roll by that name anywhere in STL.

Nice Japanese restaurant and steak house. They have two sections, the Hibachi side and the regular Japanese restaurant side. Both are great! The Hibachi side features people cooking and doing tricks as is typical, but it's nice and fun, especially with a group of people. I'm no sushi aficionado, but the sushi is always great too. Really nice atmosphere and it's in a great part of town for restaurants, in the Chesterfield Valley. Service is good, never have to wait long. I've been there a number of times and see no reason not to go back. The price is a bit much but I'd say it's typical for a Japanese restaurant. On the hibachi side, be prepared to spend $20-40 per person (not including drinks). There are cheaper meals, but be prepared...

This place is horrible! 5.50 for a roll that wasn't worth 50 cents. Not to mention that they seem to cater to the fried sushi crowd?? Sushi's meant to be healthy not artery clogging. I would never....ever.. eat here again.

Were regularsg here.. we LOVE oishi. The sushi here is really GOOD. . The dragon roll.. volcano roll and lobster roll is ALL good. My wife loves the cardinal roll.. this is my favorite place for sushi. We tried the hibatchi side twice.. that was good as well.. but we prefer sushi when coming here. ALSO the staff and MANAGER is really nice.

IT'S PRETTY GOOD. I'D GO AGAIN, if it's a Monday and NIppon Tei is closed. First off, I can only rate this place on sushi. I know they have habachi, bentos, and other cooked goods but I only go here for sushi.... only on Mondays or weekend lunches because my absolute favorite sushi place, Nippon Tei, is closed. With that being said, this place is good. The fish is fresh and the place is nice and clean. Wait staff are friendly. I like the Cardinal roll and the ginger dressing on the side salad. The dressing is creamy and fresh tasting, I only wished they up-ed the anti by using other salad add-ins to make it more interesting than plain romaine. I'm sure there are better places I could go when Nippon Tei is closed but this place hits the spot and is close to home. Nuff said.

Best hibachi in St Louis. Great taste and generous sizes. It's great to split a hibachi meal and try one or two rolls as well. Sake comes in large pitchers and the chefs are always friendly and entertaining. Never a bad experience here after 20+ times! We went there tonight and were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves at a table alone for the first time. Super fast and personal attention combined with hot, delicious food was a certain winner!

tepenyaki (table top BBQ) was horrible. Sushi is not very good either.

Have had both the Hibachi and the Sushi here- the hibachi is pretty average (as everywhere, greasy and salty), but the Sushi is good by Missouri standards. The fish generally is pretty fresh and they have some interesting rolls. They do close early (9PM) so if you show up much after 8:15, the service tends to get a little poor- they want you out of there. But I guess I like to go home after work too.........Overall, a decent choice.

Love, love, love this place! For one, it is located about 10 minutes from my house so it isn't a far commute for me. Most of all though, I love their sushi. I haven't tried their steakhouse because I feel like all steakhouses are overpriced (once you've seen it once, you've seen it all), but their rolls are delicious! My boyfriend and I ALWAYS order the volcano roll. It is a deep-fried roll of salmon and avocado topped with this superb mixture of spicy scallop. The spicy scallop makes all the difference, believe me. My parents used to own a restaurant and my dad almost drank the spicy scallop mixture when I brought the roll home for them once. He knows what good sauces and tastes mean, and this roll definitely brings it! I have ordered numerous rolls off the menu, and none of them have ever let me down so I'm sure you will be pleased with whatever you order. As a plus, they also have happy hour from around 4:30-6 or something like that where you can get $1 off per roll (I'm a real stickler for cash so any discount is a good discount for me). Whether you've been to a million sushi places, or this is your first try at it, this place is definitely a great choice!

They get 4 stars more for the service than the food. I though this place was more formal that it was, not a big deal I guess but I was thinking not so casual. The garlic scallops were excellent, the california roll was just normal, the nigiri was okay (not a big fan anyway) and the chocolate dessert was very moist and fresh tasting. Was a good overall meal but not really anything special for me.

I'm not much of a sushi snob, in fact I don't know much about sushi except for what I see most of the time when I eat it -- that being rice, raw fish, and seaweed. I know when I eat sushi I have two reactions, one being that it is tasty and I enjoy it, and two being that it brings me neither aforementioned reactions (for example: pre-made sushi from Schnucks is bad). On that note, the sushi here is indeed very good. I ordered some rolls.. I think the St. Louis roll, tuna roll, and two other ones that I don't recall. It doesn't matter to me really, it all tastes good for the most part. Throw some soy sauce and wasabi on a plate, mix it up, and bust out the chop sticks and you will have completed the meal portion of your dinner. The green tea here is also very good. The smell of matcha is very strong and reminded me of the tasty matcha soft serve ice cream I enjoyed while in Japan. I certainly recommend that you order some hot green tea with your meal. The service received from the wait staff was great as well. Very attentive and came around at the right times. Keep in mind this was a Monday though, and the place wasn't jam packed. Either way I'm sure it would be the same on any other night. Anyway, what else to say. Three thumbs up, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed in going here if you a) like sushi and b) like sushi. Go eat here.

Great food, fresh sushi, friendly staff! Must try if you haven't been here. Make sure you try a sake bomb, ask for Kirin and hot sake, and a glass, chopsticks and lots of napkins....

My guy and I were looking through Sauce Magazine and saw an ad for this place and he just had to try it, so of course, I went along too :) I love hibachi and like sushi. He loves sushi and really is not a fan of hibachi, so I thought this would be the perfect solution, until we were asked to choose which side we wanted to dine on. We chose the sushi side, so need to go back again for hibachi. We had edamame, 2 rolls, 4 types of sushi and dessert. The edamame was covered in garlic and herbs, rather than salt. It was good, but I am still a bigger fan of the salt. I actually only tried the Volcano roll and it was excellent. It had the perfect combination of salmon and avacado. His first piece of sushi was "fishy" and so that made me weary. He said the rest was good and he really liked the dragon roll. I had 2 martinis: X rated kiss and the pom something or other. Perfect! We had the tempura vanilla ice cream for dessert and asked for chocolate to be drizzled over the top. Apple slices, whipped cream, a cherry and a little chocolate. Heavenly!

I wouldn't consider myself a sushi connoisseur, but I enjoy it as much as the next girl. Oishi is near my apartment, so I visit it rather frequently and never have been disappointed. The atmosphere here is better than some of the other sushi bars in the Chesterfield area--it has a more modern and classy vibe to it. Though I've had better sushi at other places, I've certainly never had bad sushi here. My favorite is the Rainbow Roll, and Oishi's is really good. Their sashimi is also good--I've had worse. They also make excellent sake mixed drinks. They're colorful, go down smooth, and it's hard not to try them all! I have never tried the steakhouse side, so I can't comment on that. My only complaint might be that it always seems kind of empty. I mean, you generally think that a bustling, busy restaurant is going to be the one to pick, right? The good thing about this is that there isn't much of a wait. The con is that when they do get busy, the waitstaff gets a bit flustered since they're not used to the crowd. But, if you want satisfactory sushi in West County, this is a good place to try.

I'm going to have to go against the grain on this place compared to what others have said. I thought that the prices were high and the decor was cheesy. I am not really 100% sure how sushi is "supposed" to come to you temperature-wise, but ours was almost higher than room temperature. Whether they placed our items on a warm plate, or had just waited a bit too long to get it to us, it was not the right temperature. Quite off-putting. The service wasn't very good, when we got service at all; it was a challenge to get the wait staff's attention. A bad experience, one that we will not make the mistake of repeating.

A friend and I went on an adventure. A quest, really, in search of decent sushi outside of the city. She mentioned that the old sushi chef at her favorite place, I Love Mr. Sushi moved to a restaurant somewhere in the vicinity of Chesterfield. So we went, armed with some good tunes, conversation, a few laughs, and a shared sense of awe pertaining to the massive homes in the Ladue-Town and Country area. We almost NEVER get out of the City. Our knowledge of St. Louis County and Jefferson County reared its ugly head when we realized that we were nowhere near Chesterfield, but about 30 minutes south, in Eureka. That was a good laugh, I guess, and we trekked north towards our general destination after referring to a map in a gas station. We arrived at Chesterfield Commons, a testament to suburban consumerism, filled with every kind of store imaginable for your everyday suburban needs. There's even a scuba store there... I digress. We drove past a long line of chain restaurants, and I think two Qdobas, all within the same strip mall which was measured at about 1.8 miles from end to end. At one end, we found Oishi. Oishi! I think it means "delicious" or something. They have both a grill side and a sushi side, which I always find weird, since food should all be able to get along, right? I should be able to enjoy a Japanese steak chef's antics while horking down spicy tuna rolls, right? That's freedom to me. For a little clarity, this may or may not have been the place that the elusive Mr. Sushi chef relocated to. But the sushi was good. We ordered a Spicy Oishi Special, which included a Dragon Roll, and some spicy tuna, and a few other rolls that proved to be very spicy and super delicious. We also ordered some a la carte items, like a surprising wonderful squash roll, and some unagi, which tasted pretty fresh- the perfect blend of salty, sweet (but not too sweet) smoky eel that it should be. I was VERY satisfied. However, due to our roundabout way of getting to Oishi, we arrived just before closing time on a Sunday, and I can't really judge any restaurant on their service when I arrive just before closing time. However, I have to relate that our server was a little surprised when I ordered salmon roe, and made some comment like "Oh, really??" when I did. I felt like I he thought I wasn't accustomed to sushi items. But I love those little salty balls of fishy wonder... All atop a bed of rice, encased in a crisp nori. I applaud them for using the fresh stuff, since chewing that stuff detracts from the flavor of the sushi. The prices were great, too. A really satisfying meal for two, a few Sapporo beers cost us about $40. We threw in a tip and made the trek back home happy, full, and relieved to find a quicker way back to the City.

I walk away in heaven each time I visit Oishi. I'm always a big fan of any chef that plays with food while they cook it. They begin cooking with rice and veggies. I really enjoy the volcano trick in which they slice the onion to make a cone-shape and add cooking oil to the middle until it flows out. The rice is so good. They add egg and veggies to the brown rice. I always order the teriyaki shrimp and chicken. They make all the orders of the table together in front of you and sort them out as they are finished. I usually get to eat about half my meal before I'm full. I'm a big eater, but the portions are too big for me to handle. This is hands down the best Japanese steakhouse food I've ever had!

  • Michael E.

We've been to Oishi four times in the last six months. Twice for sushi, twice for the hibachi. We never had to wait more than a few minutes. It can be empty or full (like just before movies at Galaxy 14), so its kind of a crapshoot. The place is actually quite large inside. My wife (being from California) is a much bigger sushi fan than I, so I defer to her opinion on the quality and diversity of the sushi as "good, but not great." She has been disappointed with many of the sushi joints in the area, so we keep coming back to Oishi. The hibachi is adequate - the usual onion volcano, tossing shrimp, and other dramatic elements I could do without. The chicken and shrimp are o.k., but the steak is not of a great quality and a bit tough. No overuse of MSGs like some places. Prices are in the $12-20 range.

We've been to many sushi restaurants but always find ourselves back at Oishi for special occasions, or when we're just craving great Japanese cuisine.

I'm not sure what the naysayers are complaining about. Every visit to Oishi has been excellent. I've been to both locations and actually live down the street from the Creve Coeur location. I've never been disappointed and enjoy the food from both. I love seeing my food cooked to order before me and I love sushi. My husband was hesitant at first since he'd never been to a place like this the first time we went, and he'd never tried sushi. Now when we go, he gets his favorite, the spicy tuna and always says when we go anywhere else it's not as good as Oishi's. That's saying a lot, seeing as we've visited quite a few sushi places in the St. Louis area, some of them a lot fancier than Oishi, but they just don't hold a candle to this place. We plan on going back this weekend with the Groupon I got, and it has been a long time since we went, so it's going to be a welcome treat.

Very good sushi without the long drive into the city. I've tried sushi from other places around town, Sushi Sen in LSL, as well as Crazy Sushi in St. Peters & of course Drunken Fish & this place is just as good & in some cases better than a couple of the places listed before. Very nice presentation, service was good, not great but ok. Ordered the 1/2 lobster roll, the volcano roll & the Oishi roll, my favorite would be the volcano roll & the Lychee martinis - cheers!

I went to Oishi about 1 year ago, and it was my first experience with Sushi. So I thought I would write this review a year later, after I had something to compare it to. Oishi was good, but not spectacular. I enjoyed the salmon and tuna sashimi, and my friend ordered some teriyaki chicken from the hibachi. The chef put on a good show, and it was an enjoyable dining experience. We went a little before the normal dinner rush, and we were taken care of very well. Although, looking back this might be because one of the members of our three person party was a waitress there, coming in on her day off. Anyway, there is no doubt about the freshness of the food, and restaurant is very clean. When sitting in the hibachi area, be prepared to sit with strangers, unless you have a party of 9 (I think). Overall very good, and PS- With Oishi being my first sushi experience, I'm a huge fan of raw fish. So it worked well for me!

What a great destination for a birthday dinner. We decided on the Oishi Hibachi style as the kids seem to favor the food better when it is cooked in front of them. With our party of 8 we almost took up an entire table/grill. They do not seat you until your entire party is present so be sure everyone shows up on time. Our orders ran the gamut. From kids Ninja Shrimp to the Adult Filet. There seems to have been significant turnover in the chefs but our chef was very pleasant and energetic. We opted for the fried rice but warning it does add $3 per order just for the fried rice. A little steep I think. My order of shrimp and steak was done about right. The food always tends to be salty but very tasty. If you ask they also have a "spicy" sauce that is fantastic with the steak. Despite the higher price of each dish you will not leave hungry. Expect a salad, soup, side of noodles, appetizer shrimp, and side vegetables, in addition to your entree. What can I say my kids love the "fire place". It is a little pricey but you pay for the show and ambiance.

I've always had a great experience at Oishi's. But tonight was an absolute disaster. I've visited them since their opening years ago with many happy experiences. However, tonights experience has left such a sour taste that I will not return. Sayonara to June and Bruce, the managers. Sayonara to Mo Mo the waitress that provided us with confrontational attitude when serving us. Her unpleasant demeanor elevated when I questioned the charges on our check. I asked to speak to a manager, got no response. I know the manager, June, and searched for him to let him understand my dissatisfaction and he told me that he was too busy to talk to me. I hope that this business will learn better protocol for future customers. If they continue to treat their returning customers the way I was treated tonight they may have a smaller crowd.

Lobster roll, you complete me. Don't ever go away. It's my favorite food in all the world. I've also done the hibachi side once, and that was good too. I got the veggie and tofu entree and it was awesome, and they gave me so much I couldn't at all eat it all! But really, lobster roll.

  • Melissa F.

This restaurant used to be one of my absolute favorites, however, it's fallen short in both quality and cleanliness in my opinion. The sushi making is inconsistent. It's hit or miss. Several times now sushi pieces have been wrapped so loosely that it unravels and falls apart. Last visit we had to be moved to a different area of the restaurant due to flies. I'm not sure who cleans the restaurant but the larger tables and benches near their kitchen entrance on the sushi side need to be scrubbed down--very sticky. I'd also like to recommend you replace or get rid of the cushions/pillows provided for people sit on. They are filthy. Please do better Oishi, I want to really love your restaurant again.

The Ninja roll is definately what you should order! Ive been to Oishi many times but i think i found my new usual order! My husband had the philly roll and we split a bottle of wine. This was such a great night out and i cant wait to go back!

We were greeted by someone who looked to be the manager. Maybe there wasn't enough customers, but he just sat at the front of the door and played with his cell phone the entire time! Go do that in the back of the restaurant, buddy. We asked for a high chair as we were being seated by him, and when we turned around after a second, he was already at his seat playing with his phone. We thought he forgot about the high chair until a few more seconds later that his underling brought us a chair. Don't know what you would take from this, but I consider this boss very unprofessional and lazy!! To top that, his chef was standing next to him as we were leaving, and this guy was nice enough to say, "bye" and "thank you". However, this freaking manager kept his back toward us, slouched while laying his elbow on the table to keep trying to talk to his chef, and didn't say sh*t. Mr. big, greasy forehead manager, you are a dbag!!! I guess this loser Asian doesn't understand the meaning of the word, service. I hope you read this and then choke on a lobster and some cream cheese. Anyways, we had the lobster and banzai roll. I wasn't a fan of the banzai roll because of the amount of cream cheese; about 40-45% of the roll was cream cheese! It just overwhelmed the whole roll and made it terrible. I rate this a 1 out of 5. The lobster roll was better, but I wouldn't give it all the praises like everyone else is raving over it. The taste is okay at first, but the mayonnaise was too excessive. They're generous with the amount of lobster on top, but at the end, it just made me want to vomit after eating too much of it. In addition, perhaps the lobster was too heavy (physically), but the sushi rolls underneath looked they were done by kids. KIDS. They were poorly done. It just seemed like they grabbed a bunch of rice and just squashed them around the shrimp tempura and seaweed. I rate this a 2 out of 5. I will never come back to this place, not too much because of the food but mainly because of the Asian mada fada manager!!

I reviewed for this place before with 4 stars now it it officially down to One star!!! The one star goes to the manager. Went here to celebrate my dads birthday there was 7 of us. We ordered our food the cook came and He asked "what are you guys here for; celebrating?" I laughed because my dad asked us not to say it was his bday because when it is someone's bday there they bang on this drum and it's a little obnoxious. Anyway I laughed it off and he said "why are you laughing!" I didn't know what to say so I kept kinda laughing thinking he would drop it. Then I had a text come in so I got on my phone. Then he said "hey you aren't suppose be on your phone! You are suppose to be enjoying this experience."I was still texting, I look up so he sprays me with water! I put my napkin up and he was still spraying! My face was drenched. (Makeup running, hair wet)Not kidding. I was super embarrassed! Not acceptable, to a kid maybe but to an adult woman? Really? and My sister told him he was being very rude. And he kind of stopped talking. After that it was just awkward everyone was like did that really just happen? All in all the night was ruined the dinner was a bust. Like we don't need to interact with you just make our food and entertain us that is all. We all decided to bring the manager over once the cook was done. He was very apologetic and took care of about half of the bill. Anyway, Won't be back.

This place is absolutely awesome! A few points: Service here is great. The people are very talented and make eating here a fun experience. The waiters/waitresses are awesome. You are not left waiting around. You are promptly seated, orders taken and you also don't wait long at all before food is prepared. I also like the fact that I had no wait to get the check. Food is delicious and you are given really nice portions. Both kids and adults will enjoy the food as there are a good amount of options. The food is nice and freshly made which is the best part. Lastly the place is lovely. The eating areas nice and clean and you have enough space to grub! The bathroom (women's) is also very nice. I'm definitely coming back to his place soon. This will have to be one of my staple restaurants!

The food at this place is great and I have been here a total of 3 times, but my review is from my third and most recent visit. I came here on a Thursday evening for my niece's 10th birthday dinner. We came around 8:15pm and one person in our party wasn't here yet and we already got a look from one of the female servers taking our drink order. Our chef was great and wished my niece a happy birthday. By the time we started eating dinner, we were the only ones left, which we had no problem with. The other employees were cleaning around us and pretty much made us feel like we needed to hurry up and leave. They didn't even give my niece her birthday dessert nor did they sing happy birthday. They just rushed us by giving us our food quickly and then the check. I am very disappointed especially for my niece who picked this place for her birthday dinner and wanted the employees to sing and get a free dessert. They shouldn't have taken our reservation and seated us at 8:15pm if they wanted to leave by a certain time.

Found ourselves there again but wound-up on the hibachi side. I had the shrimp and the kid went for the kid steak. Note - the kid steak is made with a decent steak...kinda surprising given how many places try to feel the kids an overcooked hunk of sirloin and pass it off as a steak. Shrimp was yummy but in retrospect I wish that I had ordered something else as I forgot about the 2-piece shrimp appetizer. Probably a fish is in my future next time around...

The food is delicious! I went with my mom, who doesn't know much about Japanese food and culture and also doesn't know English very well. The waitress was really patient when taking her order. I always try something new when I come here because the quality in the fish is always top notch.

LOBSTER ROLL! This may be the biggest reason that we continue to come here. We have only ever had sushi here but it has always been really good and the service is usually ok-pretty good. Won't stop me from going here as long as they keep the Lobster Roll on the menu!

My boyfriend and I love going here when we're in the valley. We always choose to sit on the sushi side vs. Hibachi and have never had to wait for a table. The Good - The staff is always very friendly and takes very good care of us. - The sushi is always well done and reasonably priced for 2. The Rainbow roll is personal favorite. - The atmosphere is good. Very clean set-up and they even have tvs to watch the games. Not much else to say...if you're in the valley and looking for sushi, this is your place!

This review is not for the food, which had always been pretty consistent, it is the service, which has much to be desired. The waitresses are stressed and rushed. They need more help. They are just plain unfriendly, for the most part. This last visit, it took 40 minutes to receive our order, during lunch! I told the manager, and his response was, " everyone came in all at once"...It is lunchtime, so that would make sense to have lots of tables. Also, I asked for gluten free soy sauce when I noticed the waitress wrote down $1. I asked her if there was a charge to place a bottle of gluten free soy sauce on the table in which she commented yes. I find that to be absolutely ridiculous to be penalized because you have a gluten allergy! It's one thing if they're going to cook with a bunch of it but to charge, but just to place the bottle on the table and charge a dollar for every person that ordered to their table is unheard of! If my husband didn't like the chicken there, I will be going to Fin.

I came here with a friend. I couldn't cheat on my diet due to the medication that I was on. This place is quite new. Great ambiance. The sushi rolls were divine. I would come here again to try different things.

I've been here twice and have been impressed both times. It is some of the freshest sushi I've had. Great presentation and friendly staff. Lunch specials and deals through Facebook and email. Today, I had the Yadi roll in spirit of Cardinals baseball. Excellent flavors!

In the area and dropped in for the first time for sushi. Fantastic lunch special: 2 rolls, miso soup, and salad for $10. Had a spicy tuna roll and a Philadelphia roll. All of it was very good. Service was quick and attentive. Also, they had a super clean restroom. I'll be back!

Sushi was not good The service was horrible Additional charges were on the ticket when it was time to pay Kids menu for lunch is the same as the dinner price and at lunch the portions are smaller. At dinner children get noodles and appetizer shrimp but not during lunch, but you still pay $10 Smallest sushi portions I've ever had Not worth what you pay

I went here with about 20 friends for my birthday (no I won't tell you how old). The one down side is they wouldn't seat us until everyone showed up, and you know for a group that size it can take awhile! Aside from that it was amazing! The owner helped us get settled and even recommended some nihonsyu (Japanese rice wine, aka - sake) for me, which he didn't have to since I'm kind of knowledgeable about it. I think they were just excited for our group because there were so many of us. But I digress. We had the whole back area to ourselves which was two hibachi grills. The two chefs were super friendly and helped make the evening fun. The food was delicious and the portion size was very adequate. I ate it all and was full......without having to order seconds (that's impressive). If you're looking for a good hibachi experience and some nice nihonsyu then definitely give this place a try. It's the best hibachi experience I've had in St. Louis.

this place is so cool! I went her for my birthday party and everyone had a great time! the chefs are so funny and do an excellent job with the food! I love the sesame chicken! but be warned, They give you a lot of food in big portions so I recommend sharing if you don't think you can eat a lot! but other than that it's a great place for a night of fun

This is the first perfect sushi lunch I've had in a long while. Went here, short on time, a couple weeks ago & was super impressed. They have a pretty good lunch special - two rolls or one roll & 3 nigiri, soup & salad for $10. We went during the lunch rush & were seated and greeted by a server immediately. Within 1 minute of ordering, we had our drinks, soup & salad. And 5 minutes later, our sushi arrived. Because we were in a hurry, this was greatly appreciated. The quality was excellent as well - loved the ginger dressing on the salad & the miso soup was really good (I'm not usually a huge fan). I ordered white tuna, salmon & sea bass nigiri and all of it was very fresh. My eel roll was the standout though. Seems like a lot of places skimp on the eel, but this roll did not. Overall, very good to great food, plus fast, attentive service. Oishi Sushi Chesterfield, I think you're a new fav for sushi lunches!

Because I travel for work, I often end up eating out alone. I like eating at places that welcoming a solo customer with a welcoming bar and good service even though my check may not be as high as a four top. The servers at Oishi were fantastic. I felt very comfortable and taken care of as I ate soup, salad, and chicken and shrimp hibachi. I started with a glass of Three Saints Pinot Noir which was FANTASTIC! The soup was great and the salad was a typical Japanese steakhouse salad. The reason for four stars instead of five-- the shrimp part of my entree was wonderful but the chicken wasn't anything to freak out over. They didn't have (my favorite) typical white sauce (yummy sauce to some) so that left my taste buds desiring just a little bit more. Overall I would eat at Oishi again but I would try the steak and shrimp or just the shrimp entree.

Great little place for sushi! Downside is that they don't open until 11:30 and we normally eat at 11:00. However, because we have to drive to Chesterfield, it normally works out ok. The service is pretty consistent and the food seems to always be consistent. My recommendation is the Lobster roll. That thing is fantastic! I have always set on the sushi side and do not know how the hibachi side is. I need to give that a try one of these days.

We recently brought our family of five for a Valentine's/birthday celebration to Oishi. When we got there, we were informed that it would be a 20 minute wait. The entire restaurant was packed and overbooked so much that there wasn't even a place to stand! When I checked back in to ask how much longer it would be, the hostess merely shrugged her shoulders. SO RUDE! No manager around or visible and there were children crying and upset because they had to wait so long to eat. When we were finally seated, we ordered drinks but the drinks did not arrive until we were half way finished with our meal! They never cleared any of our soup or salad plates so I finally cleared them myself. Lousy service with a bad attitude. Also, when the time came to get rice the chef at our table miscounted and I never got any. Finally after asking three times they brought me rice from someone else's table. My birthday was never acknowledged in any way. The whole thing was just a disaster that cost $200. Don't waster your money. Go to Kobe instead.

Oishi is, simply put, just okay. If you visit for sushi, you will be seated very quickly, even on weekends. Likely a wait for the hibachi grill. The sushi was decent, as was the service. Sushi was a little overpriced for the quality. Might visit again in the near future and try a few different items on the menu. Still have a few other places that are preferred over Oishi. Perhaps visiting during Happy Hour might be better.

I am a fan of this place. Or, I should really say, I am a fan of their lobster roll. I dream about this each night before going to sleep. Don't let the hefty price stop you from getting it (around $30?). It is HUGE and the fried lobster portions are generous. However, if it's just for one or two diners, get the half lobster roll. Their appetizers are well made also. I always opt for something fried, like their crab rangoon or the oishi platter which comes with a variety of fried delicious crap. Greasy but not too greasy, does that make sense? Their sushi side is fantastic. Have not tried the hibachi side but those cooks sure can do some neat tricks. The only item I disliked was their udon. I can't describe it, but the broth of that dish was way off. I always get udon at every sushi restaurant and that taste was a first for me. No bueno. If you're getting one of their bigger fancier rolls, stick to just ordering a couple of them. Oishi is one of those sushi restaurants that caters to the gluttonous generation(s) of our era. Contrary to belief, not all sushi is healthy. Those rolls are LOADED with mayo and other fatty sauces, so it can get pretty heavy on your stomach. The place gets pretty busy, but the service is good. One time one of my tempura pieces was raw and they brought me 3 more (cooked) to make up for it. Yay!

If you like teppanyaki, Oishi is one of the best in St. Louis! They serve up exceptional sushi as well! Oishi is actually advertised as a Japanese "Steak and Sushi" restaurant. I will tell you, they do both extremely well. The teppanyaki menu is impressive, but I'll get to that later. Don't believe for one moment that you have to limit your dinner selection to sushi and hibachi. They also serve a wonderful selection of other oriental tastes. For example, they serve Thai curry dishes (red or green) with your choice of tofu, chicken, beef or seafood! They also stir up a number of delicious stir-fries. Oh and I must mention, one of my favorite dishes, sukiyaki! Delicately sliced beef, in a delicious broth with an abundance of vegetables. OKay, the sushi here is some of the best in the St. Louis area. I've got to suggest the Rainbow Roll, and most definitely, you have to try the Lobster Roll! All of the sushi and sashimi here is wonderful! If you do decide to go hibachi, you won't be disappointed. I suggest you make a reservation and bring a group. Realize, the hibachi includes an artful cooking demonstration by the Hibachi Chef. The staff will set you up with drinks, take your order, and serve your appetizers, but cooking will not begin until the grill table has been filled. Well almost... they usually like at least six customers at a table before the cook will begin. The table (if memory serves), will seat eight people. So bring a group and enjoy the show and the food! One thing I can guarantee, your kids will love the show! As for the hibachi menu, assuming you are dining as a couple, I suggest the "Emperor and Empress" for your dinner choice. This is the full hibachi meal experience, with filet mignon, lobster, and your choice of shrimp or scallops! The bar is well managed and employs experienced bartenders! They make a wide assortment of classic and "foo foo" drinks. I had a Stoli's Martini, up with three olives, dirty. It was made to order! The place is great! The service is outstanding! The decor and ambiance is right on, and the restrooms are clean! This is my number one choice, when I'm in the mood for hibachi (teppanyaki)! If you disagree, please drop me a note, because I'd like to know why!

I like going to Oishi. I have been there a couple times before on the hibachi steakhouse side, and once before on the sushi side but mainly so that person I was with could eat. My prior visits have been consistent and similar to this visit in quality of both food and service, so I think this review should pretty much reflect what one can expect. Overall, it is an enjoyable time with good food and a good show. But really, if you've been to a hibachi steakhouse, you probably already know the show. My chefs have always been well trained and know the routine pretty well. It was enjoyable to watch, food was fresh (since it was just prepared in front of you), and you can have fun laughing at the corny jokes and applauding the culinary skills. All the workers were friendly and attentive. However, the appetizer, miso soup, and salads came in such rapid succession that we were still finishing up the prior course when the next one came out. The place was still half empty when we finished, so I don't understand why. Let's hope it was just some poor timing on the kitchen's part where they have to work fast on a busier night - but at least the chef has to work at more of a set pace. We started with a California sushi roll, a fried dragon sushi roll sushi, and a potsticker appetizer. The sushi rolls were both firm and tasty. The dragon roll had a lot of flavor, but really just tang vs. heat. However, that's my preference. But if you want heat, theirs won't do it. The potstickers were fried, so the dumpling portion wasn't all gummy like boiled ones are. But they were awfully small for what you pay. Seemed a little chintzy to me. Miso soup was quite hot and well flavored. Salad was standard, cool and crisp - but the ginger dressing was pretty tasty. It had a mild ginger & sweet flavor. As for the hibachi goodies, we went with two Emperor & Empress selections to celebrate both my parents' birthdays. That includes shrimp or scallops, filet mignon, and lobster. Plus fried rice and vegetables, of course. The food and show were pretty much all excellent. Rice was well-flavored and not overly greasy. Filet was tender, juicy, and savory. My shrimp was pretty good, but the wife's scallops actually were even better! The lobster was a full lobster tail grilled up while still in the tail, butterflied with the meat side down. And while it had a good flavor, the grilling actually made it a little bit rubbery - not tough, but not the usual fall apart texture. And since the meal was for both my parents' birthdays, as well as another person's birthday at the table/grill, they all got big ole chocolate cupcakes with a candle and a very lively Japanese-style birthday song. Seriously, the cupcake was big. Overall, we had a fun, pleasant time with pretty tasty food (Oh, and we took about half the food home, since there was so much!) and just a little bit of hurrying at the beginning. Of course, you get what you pay for, and all those appetizers along with Emperor & Empress entrees don't come cheap. So I'm giving four stars for the visit, and I wouldn't have been happy with a less stellar night.

This review is the tale of two experiences. First of all let's start with the food. The food is fantastic. I've lived on the coast for many years and so getting sushi somewhere that is landlocked is always a scary thing. The rolls here are very good and the ingredients are fresh. The food alone will keep me coming back. Now let's get to the service. Atrocious. Horrible. Almost enough to make me never come back again. They forgot to order several of our dishes. They did not come back to the table to fill any drinks. We were basically ignored by the server unless we flagged them down . When we informed them of their mistakes they simply said sorry and walked away. The best service that we got was by the person that was bussing the tables. If it were not for the quality of the food I would never step foot in this establishment again. This place would get 4 stars if it were not for the absolutely terrible service.

I've been very impressed each time I've been to Oishi. I've dined on the hibachi side once and the normal restaurant side twice now. The service on both sides of the restaurant was very good. The hibachi chef was a real treat with a lot of tricks. He was even able to toss a piece of food into each of our mouths which was pretty fun. The food on the hibachi side is what you always get from a hibachi restaurant. Some fried rice, a shrimp or two, veggies, meat of your choice. To me, every hibachi restaurant has the same flavor. It's the chef that's the show. My husband and I love sushi and Oishi is our second favorite sushi place. We really love the Dynamite Roll, the Caterpiller is also very good. I haven't had a roll at Oishi that I didn't enjoy. We ordered a hot pot once because my father hadn't had sushi before and that was a back up. While my dad completely enjoyed the rolls, we also all enjoyed the hot pot. Their miso soup is the best around. No complaints on the service on this side of the restaurant either. My water glass was never empty.

I don't know if I will ever get anything but sushi here. I don't want to chance it. The sushi is fantastic. We got the dragon roll. WOW! I have had sushi in highly rated restaurants in FL and HI. This comes very close. This was very affordable for Sushi in the middle of the country. Sashimi platter was a little overpriced Food, service, atmosphere, selection - all excellent.

After finally looking, I was really surprised to see as many 1-star reviews as I did here. We've never had anything but great food and service over the last several years. We've gone here for birthdays, anniversaries, and just plain good food. The best course of action is to head over to the Hibachi - even if you want sushi, as well! My wife and I generally split an Oishi Special (filet w/ scallops), add a second bowl of fried rice, and order 3-4 sushi rolls. A perfect amount of food, some GREAT diversity, and a really fun atmosphere. The only down sides here are long waits (generally every night) due to the way they fill tables. Sometimes the sushi can be a bit slow, but that's to be expected when it gets really busi. I believe they only have a single sushi chef there. Mixed drinks are strong, but a bit high - kind of par-for-the-course for any Hibachi-style restaurant. I'd give Oishi a 4.5, but I'll round up to 5 since it deserves better than 4!

  • Dave S.

Oishi is a decent restaurant overall, but they really lack on service. We have had to a wait over 30 minutes beyond our reservation time to be seated on several occasions. They disregard reservation priority over walk in customers. It's first come first serve.a

The service and atmosphere are great, but the hibachi grill is just ok. The food wasn't very flavorful and the veggies were undercooked. Also, no ice-cream like other hibachi grills usually include.

I read the reviews on the volcano roll. Everyone seemed to like it but I found it be very odd. The roll was okay but I was confused by the huge pile of cold scallops...yuck! The fried rice was mediocre. Then I requested spicy mayo and the waitress brought me this huge cup of...well I'm posting the picture of it because I'm not exactly sure what it was. Speaking of the waitress, she was a bit demanding and a little rude. She seemed to be more focused on an Asian couple a few tables down. Overall: This is NOT the type of place where you go to experience sushi for the first time or as an alternative from what your accustomed to (my favorite sushi restaurant is Benihana) My wallet and stomach wasn't particularly happy after this meal. The water was refreshing though.

We just ate our 38th anniversary dinner on the road from Colorado to Florida. What a treasure! We sat at the sushi bar as is our habit- everything was wonderful! If we lived near here this would become a fast favorite. Food and service was outstanding. Prices great.

sushi was pretty fresh. 2nd best japanese place i went to in stl. see kampai sushi in the cwe. as a side note, on the way out, i noticed a funny sign that they had written in japanese. i think they were trying to say grilled chicken or something like that. instead, they used a word in japanese that is only used for chickens that are running around loose on a farm. there is no good direct translation, but its closer to hen or fowl.

My first Groupon use! And it was a nice choice indeed... Hibachi is always a fun experience, and the food was amazing. The boyfriend and I kept the dishes simple and familiar, and we were very pleased with the results. Our chef was great in starting conversation, and us being our talkative selves we were able to carry along the conversation during the short time (compared to the other chefs) our chef was at the table. He was very nice and let us know about the ginger sauces. The restrooms were clean and well-designed that was cohesive with the rest of the decor. I will definitely be going back with a larger group for entertainment!

Hmmm I'm not sure how I felt about this place, but I guess I liked it okay. Their sushi wasn't the greatest, but it was pretty decent - and their prices were pretty cheap, compared to what I was used to in Chicago. They did make me a tasty martini, and we didn't have to wait at all on a Saturday night - score! The steakhouse portion of the restaurant, however, was bumpin' - and was filled with a dozen sixteen year old girls that dressed like they were 30. That was disturbing, to say the least, and reminded me of the Sex and the City episode of the 13 year olds sending over a bottle of Dom Perignon. Guess that's what you get when in Chesterfield?

I have been here many times. Unfortunately, in the past year the quality of food and service has taken a sharp decline. The sushi is slimy and the Tai food I would not give to my dog! Urgh. It will be long time before I visited this place again.

Had some rolls and tempura. I wasn't fond of either. The tempura was overly oily, like it went in the oil before it was hot enough or something... I made the mistake of getting the fried rice as a side. That was worse than panda express.
