Who forgets to check if their phone is working at 11:30 am when you manage a restaurant? There . . . is sign #1. I was particularly hungry today and I happened to be in the area. Since I have never been to Charro's, I thought I could get a good burrito to-go ahead of time. Why didn't I just go to 88China as I had first planned? I reached Charro's front counter to find a "very" Asian young lady as the maitre'd. I don't mean that derogatorily. In California, a Mexican cook at a Chinese restaurant or a Chinese cooking at a Mexican restaurant, is not unusual. But in Chesterfield, Missouri? Sign #2. When I told her that I need a to-go order, she looked and responded ... uuh, confused. In heavy Chinese accent, she nicely informs me that she's getting the manager. The "manager" or whoever she is, came forth. She is "more" Asian than her subordinate and could not "get" my order for chicken enchilada with green sauce (tomatillo sauce). We had to review my simple order at least twice until a latin looking gentleman came over and snatched the ticket from her. Sign #3. In fairness, my order arrived in a large bag in about 6 minutes. That's a good sign!! (So I thought.) The order cost almost $10. My expectations went up a couple of notches -- after all, I AM HUNGRY. Driving back to the office, I squeezed my fingers into the bag to pull out some chips. It's obviously store bought. (Of course, I know!) At the office, I found that the lunch-bag-sized paper bag inside the plastic bag is packed with chips. I will not even discuss the salsa. My $10 lunch in the foil container was disappointing -- in size, in presentation, in overall value. The green sauce I wanted over the enchilada barely made an appearance. The filling had so much onions, I'm worried about not having gas-ex in my desk drawer. It seems my $10 lunch has $5 entree and $5 worth of chips. Too bad for Charro that there are better Mexican restaurants not too far. I (highly) suggest Matadors at Chesterfield Valley as comparison. And there's also El Nopal off Big Bend and 141 which is almost always packed.

I hope the Groupon recently posted for this restaurant will give it more business, as when I went there a couple months ago it was completely dead on a Friday night... This place is very nice and you get what you order. Very straight-forward for a Mexican restaurant and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Customer service was amazing and my family and I were very satisfied. Much different in restaurant experience in Chesterfield!

Charro's is everything I look for in a Mexican restaurant. The food here is great and reasonably priced. The service has always been fast and friendly. The atmosphere is nice and of course, most importantly, the chips and salsa are fresh and tasty. Ask for the hotter green salsa if you dare...it's great as well.

Ms T and I have to keep using all of those Groupons and we finally made it to Charro. It was chilly and rainy but inside was warm and inviting. The place has a good feel. They started us off with the usual chips and salsa. The chips were normal, thin style, served warm. The salsa is pureed tomato with cilantro and oregano. Ms T thought it was a little sweet, but I thought the sweet and acid balance was good. I would increase the cilantro and back off the oregano, but that's just me. Overall I liked it. It was borderline salty but was not loaded with onion, always a plus. Ms T ordered the Enchaladas Supremas plate and I ordered Chile Verde with pork. Her platter had one chicken, one bean, one cheese and one beef enchilada. It was excessively smothered in red sauce. The sauce was different in that it clearly had tomato pureed into it making it tangy. I prefer a good pure chile sauce, but this was OK. It was also on the edge of being too salty. The shredded chicken slightly stale, the ground beef was pretty bland, but the cheese was simply bad. It was that commercially available goo with the processed cheese texture, like white Velveeta. It is getting harder and harder to find places that serve good queso Chihuahua or queso Oaxaca. Ms T would not order this again. I liked my pork much better. For once I liked my food better than she. The menu gives you a choice of pork or beef "cooked with green tomatillo sauce". The meat is not cooked in the sauce. It was large cubes grilled freshly and served in the sauce. The meat was tender and juicy with grill flavor and was quite good. The sauce was thickened tomatillo and was probably canned, but was OK. It had some heat, but no evidence of much chile. I found a number of indelibly tough, fibrous strands in it, either from husk or tomatillo stems. This led me to assume the sauce is canned. They also needed to trim the pork a little better, some of the pieces were just chunks of fat. All that being said, I still liked it and what I took home was great the next day. It's too bad the meat is not finished in the sauce longer. The sauce was also salty and would really benefit from the mellowing of the meat juices. The menu is very large. I saw enough promise to go back, Ms T did not. This is not a taqueria or creative Mexican. I would not call it comida casera. It is a straight ahead Mexican restaurant, but seems to be better than average. It certainly exceeds my experiences at Ruiz or Hacienda. We will try again when we get a chance and I may bump the rating based on the experience.

The service is fantastic. The chips are ultra thin and crispy. The red salsa is smooth and tasty and the green salsa is spicy. I couldn't finish a drink before it was instantly refilled. The restaurant is extemely clean the atmosphere and decor are very nice. We ordered everything with shredded beef and chicken. I ordered the taco, buritto, and enchilada, all of which were very good, although a bit salty. I think the red sauce over the burrito and enchilada could be improved. The kids loved the quesadillas too. Now for dessert... The sopapilla and deep fried ice cream were amazing. Finally, the restrooms were immaculate which is a big plus for me.

There aren't many places in West County that serve authentic, excellent Mexican food that aren't part of a chain or have a mascot. The owner is there every time we go and his presence shows in the high quality, excellent service, and great food they serve. The atmosphere is a little sparse but the food more than makes up for it. This last visit was exceptionally good becuase they had mole pollo as a special. 4 of the 5 of us at the table ordered this instead of our usual favorites and it was very good. We made sure to tell the owner to add this to the menu as a regular item along with all of the other traditional mole dishes. Over the last half dozen visits we have tried the fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, chili rellano, and more i cannot remember at this time. It is always good and we'll be back for more.

One of the better molcajetes in town. And the tacos al pastor are pretty good. Nice micheladas. This place is two steps below Amigos Cantina, but about six steps above crap like El Maguey. Same price, too.

Had the molcajete. Neat presentation. Hotter the Sun. Not spicy hot, heat hot. Food was still boiling when we left. We also had enchilada suizas, and they were good. Except, with both the dishes I think they only use fat and gristly parts of the beef. The beef in the dishes was bad. We would go back. We are still looking for the Mexican restaurant in the area to call great, and this wasn't it. Yet.

This isn't bad by West County "Mexican" restaurant standards. Anyone stalking me on Yelp might notice that frequently I rail against greasy, gringo-fied burrito emporiums like El Maguey, Mi Lupita, etc. Charro's leans toward that category, but they have a few menu items that rise above. I got a fish taco and some tacos al pastor. The fish taco was pretty good, and the pork had a good flavor, although the meat had some chewy bits. Their corn tortillas aren't very substantial, being thin and prone to tearing. The al pastor plate came with a bean soup of some sort that resembled baked beans rinsed of any flavor and served in beef broth. I'd give them another try, but in general I prefer a couple other Mexican places in the area.

So, I had a HUGE margarita and was doing pretty good....then I ordered the Tacos el pastor and they came with a side of soupy beans....I thought the tacos were dry, but the beans were pretty good, so I made the mistake of asking the waitress what kind of meat was diced up in the beans. She replied, " Oh, that's just weiners". I think I may throw up now. I haven't ate a hotdog in 15 + years. They should have a disclaimer. EWWWW. Going to throw up some beans + hotdogs now.

We went on a Saturday evening. Terrific food and terrific service. The waiter was friendly and gave us great service. The food arrived hot and fresh and delicious. The prices were reasonable. We certainly will visit this place again.

One of the nicer of the standard mexican restaurants in the St. Louis area. Key points: It was VERY clean and tastefully decorated! That's a big plus for me since most other authentic mexican restaurants are so tacky and unkept. They have all your typical mexican dishes and combos, but have many delicious looking house specialties as well. I have to say that their menu is HUGE compared to other similar places and have options for everyone. The food tasted very fresh and came out promptly. Their strawberry frozen marg was one of the best I have ever had...so fresh and just the right amount of tequila! Service was friendly and quick, but that should be a given since we were two of the few people in the restaurant on a Wednesday after 8:30pm. It didn't blow me away, but I was very impressed! I wish this place was closer to home as I would plan on visiting again soon. Might be worth the drive though!

One of my absolute favorite places to eat in St. Louis! This is a fairly typical family owned, hole-in-the-wall, Mexican restaurant, but with DELICIOUS food! I would recommend anything on the menu here! Trust me, if you love Mexican food, you wont be disappointed. You can't go wrong with the prices either. On the lunch special, you can eat a HUGE meal here for under $6 and that's including a soda. Dinner is a little more expensive, but not by much. Happy hour drink specials are great here too, last time I was there I had a 32 oz draft beer for about $5. Pretty great! The service at Charro is excellent; always very attentive and speedy. Check this place out! Seriously.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
