This review is particularly aimed at travelers on I-49 (71). I've been traveling to Butler, MO for the last 10 years to visit my wife's grandmother. No visit to Butler is complete without a trip to the Lantern. If you are traveling up 49/71 and need a good place to stop for some good food, this place is for you. The worst part about traveling out of your comfort zone/neighborhood is trying to find good food on the road where you can eat reasonably and not feel like an outsider, especially in a small town like Butler. The Lantern is a good spot for a homestyle meal where you can get in and out pretty quickly with a full stomach for the road. We normally settle for fast food or in car options, but if you are passing through Butler around lunch or dinner time, feel confident in TFL. They've recently updated their menu. Expect to see small town favorites like chicken fried steak, burgers, and tenderloin sandwiches. They've also added some BBQ options that are pretty good as well. Dinners here (larger meals) come with a side and a trip to the salad bar (meager compared to other spots). Meals are also served with delicious homemade rolls. Servers are always friendly and willing to accommodate special requests. It is not, however, a place where you can expect five star treatment. This is Butler - don't walk in here and act like a big city foodie on a mission to find the missing link of cuisine. Don't be surprised to have folks stare a bit - if you're not from Butler, they'll know. But a friendly nod or "hello" goes a long way in this Bates County seat. Butler folks are good people and have a high level of highway traffic pass through daily. TFM is only 500 feet off the highway exit and is easy to maneuver back on the road once you are finished. Don't be bashful, eat at the Lantern. It's the best restaurant in town and very easy to navigate from the highway.

My wife, five month old daughter and myself stopped here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon as we were driving through on our way up to Kansas City. On a Sunday, this was one of the few local non-fast food restaurants open so it was our best option for lunch. It was definitely a place the locals go to but we definitely felt welcomed! The food was good, we both had the chicken fried chicken sandwich and both enjoyed it! The service was also really good! Our only real complaint for this place is, traveling with a 5 month old we have come to expect most restaurants and stores to have changing stations in at least one of the bathrooms, this place didn't have any.

Been coming here for years and it's always had good food and friendly service. There menu could be bigger but what they have on it, it's really good. I got a mushroom burger my wife got club sandwich and my daughter got the cowboy burger.

I've eaten here several times, mostly because there's not much else in Butler. I always wish Lantern had a better menu & better food. Very ordinary, nothing creative or special. Each time I stop here I swear I won't stop again, and yet, Gert I am again complaining about the menu & food.

The Flaming Lantern is probably the most happening place in town. Well, from what I could tell, it is the only place in town, at least the only bar; and despite its name, it is not a gay bar. It is a fun place to be if you want to get a drink, but the food leaves something to be desired. Everything on the menu, and I mean everything, is deep fried. Now, they have some inventive items, like deep fried cauliflower, and deep fried jalapeño slices, both of which are pretty good. But for me, I get really sick (and I mean sick) after having a small portion of deep fried anything, not to mention that the flavor isn't exactly amazing despite what is being fried. And you really cant be eating for the condiments, especially when it is their mystery cheese sauce. I had the catfish sandwich, and I asked for nothing on the sandwich or on the side, and of course was given a pickle on the side, so all the juices soaked in and ruined it for me despite specifically asking for no pickle. But I was with a bunch of people and couldn't really send it back. The service is good though, and best of all, it is right across the street from the only hotel in town, so chances are you are staying there, and you can just walk on over. If you are staying in Butler at the hotel I highly recommend that you go to Wal-Mart (something I never recommend!) and get some fresh fruit for your breakfast, because you will not find anything healthy to eat anywhere in town, and you will feel it, believe me!

On our way down to Texas from Wisconsin and we were looking for some good home cooked food. We found it. Great food and service was very good as well. Get the Brisket with Baked potato.

Had the ribeye special. 14 oz. baked potato, Salad bar. Steak cooked med-rare but was very poor quality steak. Baked potato was old and overcooked. Bloody mary drink was fair. Little piece of celery in bottom of glass. Thought there were no olives. In bottom of glass also. Should have been salt and slice of lime on rim also. Sloppy bartender. Not worth the $32 it cost.

We had a family gathering here to celebrate some birthdays. We were pleasantly surprised. The portion sizes were large and the food was good.
