I made reservations in September for New Year's Eve (I actually wanted to stay in September because Stillwater is our anniversary destination but since they were booked we decided to get a Vault room for New Year's Eve at the suggestion of a friend) With the new year approaching, I received email/bill from Water Street saying I owed them $160 (I had already confirmed and paid $153 for the room) for a New Year's Eve Package that included dinner, champagne and chocolates, and breakfast. I emailed them back saying, "No thank you, we made other plans that night", as we had made plans to eat at Marx restaurant. In addition to the email, I called and inquired about this new fee. They told me I was required to buy the package or cancel my reservation. I told them I would discuss it with my boyfriend and would get back to them. Three hours later, I received an email canceling my reservation! I called that night and reinstated it and emphasized that I did not want to get double billed, which I did. I emailed the Manager about this poor service and he said it was he who cancelled my reservation after my "No thank you" email. He also told me he would not refund me because he didn't see any double billing. I ended up canceling the entire thing. I will never stay at the Water Street after this. No one seems to care about the quality of service that is given and apparently reservations can be cancelled with a simple "No thank you" to a $160 dining package that guests are forced to buy in order to stay on New Years. As someone who has worked in hotels, restaurants, catering businesses and the like, the service the Water Street has to offer is sub par and not worth the hassle.

New place to try in our new town! We sat on outside, which was really nice, although a touch cold at breakfast time. All in all - the menu has some unique twists, I ordered the corned beef hash and really, really enjoyed it.

I have been here twice and I LOVED it both times. Note: I have not been here for the normal dinners. I have only attended the Gentlemen's Nights, where the chef pairs five courses with five kinds of liquor (from the same brand). I have been to the scotch night twice and HOT DAMN. The best meals I have ever eaten. The dinners are expensive, but worth the occasional treat to be sure. The last dinner I attended was the Balvenie Scotch dinner. Even better? You get two, hand rolled cigars to smoke outside on their patio, overlooking the St. Criox. What can be better than that?

This place is pretty swell. The bf and I were at the classic car show and decided to grab dinner here; we'd never been before. Their prices are a bit steep, so we won't be dining here too often, but their food is delicious and well-prepared and they have a pretty good beer and hard cider selection.

Avoid like the plague. We should have known better. We waited for 30 minutes for a table despite the place being half full. Sat for 10 minutes no one came by. Asked a waitress to take our order, ordered a sandwich and a salad and then 40 minutes later flagged down another waitress to check on our lunch order. She came back and said 15 more minutes. This is for a salad and a sandwich on a half full patio. Like I said go somewhere else and don't waste your day.

Nice place at nice location. The patio is great on sunny days with a nice river and bridge view. Food is good.

The room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable with the old timey feel you're probably expecting from a place called the Water St Inn. We had a great view of the lift bridge. The food in the restaurant was good (not great, but good), though the wait staff left much to be desired. Our table felt ignored at both dinner and breakfast the next morning. Our stay was through a Living Social package, which was a pretty good deal, and the rating is based on the price. If we had payed full price for the room and meal the rating would go down to three stars for sure, possibly two stars. The great price made up for any misses.

We stayed here with a Living Social coupon from my parents for a lithe "get away" without our daughter. Overall, it was a fun place to stay and the room was very, very cool. The coupon was a great deal; however, you did feel a little "black sheep" with your coupon, and it did feel like you were treated as so. Even with the limited menu (obviously with a free dinner, menu is going to be limited - so that was ok by us!), the food was great, dinner and breakfast. My only complaint with both the coupon as well as the stay was that the "pan fried, almond crusted walleye" was actually a deep fried piece of walleye with like 5 almond slivers sprinkled on top. Everything else we got there was amazing. We love Stillwater, and are considering another stay here for our anniversary night - the room was huge, GREAT river view, service was great, and the regular meal prices were very decent considering the food!

I stayed at the Water Street Inn for a week and ate at this restaurant a few times. I enjoyed the food. I thought the price was reasonable, the food was good, service was usually good, refreshments were available and reasonably priced and the atmosphere was great. One complaint would be the lack of bar area and viewing sports teams. I just wanted a burger, beer and to watch hockey and I was in a corner near the popcorn machine. Couldn't really see anything. Speaking of popcorn... they have free popcorn for when you are at the bar quenching your thirst. All in all, great location, decent price, nice atmosphere, good food and an all around great place to grab a beer and burger.

I stayed at the Water Street Inn and for the price I was beyond disappointed. Our room smelled terrible upon arriving, which we realized was caused by the filter in the heating/air conditioning unit not being clean. So gross. Only one channel of our TV worked, and it only showed infomercials. The Inn is not well maintained at all. The wallpaper is peeling in the common areas, the tile in the bathroom was cracked and the bed was creaky. For $250 you definitely can find something much better!

One of the more romantic places you can go for dinner in Stillwater. Try the duck tenderloin; it's made with figs. A guaranteed mouthgasm. The two of us went there for our annual Valentine's Day + 7 night out. We always avoid the V-Day rush by going the following weekend. Everything about the entree courses are superb and they have a wonderful wine list. I was serious about the duck. Please try this if you make it here. The house vinaigrette is made from raspberries. Try that, too. The dinner menu is sort of odd; there's a list of sandwiches and wraps that are budget-friendly but boring. The entrees are more expensive. It's a keep-everyone-happy menu, but why offer mediocre low-cost grub at all? The entrees aren't unreasonably priced and they are SO much better. I uploaded a picture of one of the dining rooms. Just... lovely. Our waitress was sweet. She had that rare talent of appearing right when we needed something. A nice touch: she labeled my wife's take home box with its contents. There's ample parking in the hotel. The place in on the river and a short walk to downtown Stillwater.

We stayed at the Water Street Inn this past weekend after purchasing a Crowd Cut deal. You never know what to expect with historic hotels, but I was very pleased with our stay at the Water Street Inn. The hotel was renovated in the 90s and has some of the orginal items, like the tin celing in the lobby. Our room was very big and had great views of the St. Croix River as well as a whirlpool tub and gas fireplace. Don't expect anything too fancy, but the rooms are clean and they have a historic feel, which is what we were going for. The location of the hotel is perfect. It's right off of Main Street so you are within walking distance to all of the great shops and restaurants. Plus, Water Street Inn has their own pub that was hopping on Saturday night and had live Irish music. My only complaint about our room was that the bed was old and squeaky so anytime you rolled over, it was a little loud.

Water Street Inn is located in downtown Stillwater right on the water. Our room had a wonderful view of the river and the bridge! The room was very spacious and had all had the feel of a lumber baron's retreat! The rooms are not new, but the are clean and give you the historic feel of Stillwater. The service was good, but we didn't test them much. If you are looking for a nice place to stay, I recommend checking this out for the location and views.

They need to invest some money back into the facility and upgrade with some original craftsmenship and decor. We have been there for many events and they seem to neglect the building. Although the food and servie are very good

Location = A+! We had won a gift certificate to The Water Street Inn in a silent auction and were excited to use it the week before Valentine's day. We were there the Thursday prior, and I'm pretty sure we were among the only people staying that evening. Our first room was comfortable. We checked in, found somewhere for dinner, and then went to leave... and the toilet overflowed. We threw down a few towels so water wouldn't go everywhere and stopped at the front desk to let them know on the way out. They offered us another room, but since we would be gone for a while, I just asked them to take care of it and we'd be back later. Came back later. Like, 5 hours later. Towels were still on the floor. Really? I called down to the front desk and talked to the guy who had just come in - bless his heart, he had just gotten there and didn't know about it, so he ran up new keys to another room. So, at midnight, we changed rooms. At least it was an upgrade :) Our new room was nice also. The decor is kind of a mixture of styles, but you can tell they're trying to stay within the theme. It really is pretty cool. Both of our rooms had hot tubs in the room as well as a fireplace, and the high ceilings added to the spacious feel. This room also looked out on the lift bridge, which was beautiful. Despite the mishaps, our stay was fine. I think the 3 stars are due to the annoyance I felt when we came back and nothing had been done about the water. I guess we should have taken them up on the room change when they first offered! OH - and the bed - it was comfortable, but there was no bedding other than the fitted sheet, the down comforter, and a throw blanket. Weird. A regular flat sheet would have been nice. They also moved our check-out to 12pm without any charge, gave us a 2-for-1 token for Charlie's bar (which we loved), and free breakfast (which we didn't eat... we had other plans). It was a charming stay overall. For the location and some of the perks, we'd go back.

This hotel, for the money, is awesome. I just returned from Stillwater (3rd or 4th trip there this year), and I've stayed at the Water St Inn every time. I'll be the first to admit, when staying there alone, you can't help but notice how creepy it can be...I think it's the decor and the cold drafts that seem to blow thru the big brick building, amongst other things... Never eaten in the restaurants, but I know they get a good amount of local's in to eat, so it can't be that bad. The bar(s) are cool too...My favorite is outside, overlooking the river...of course that one is only open during non-winter months. Their other bar is and Irish-themed pub. It's pretty slow during the week, but get's a little crazy on the weekends...

I often take out-of-towners here and recommend it often. The food is good, but not extraordinary. The selection is wide enough but with some staple selections so that everyone can find something they like. It has a great location (especially if you can sit outside in summer) and that is its biggest selling point. Our servers are usually teens who are helpful and kind, some more competent or professional than others. The combination of menu, location, and good price make it a favorite.

Beautiful hotel though it obviously is just being "maintained". The rooms are nice though don't plan on getting any sleep if you stay on the side of the hotel where they allow delivery trucks to park. I'm not sure if this is a regular event but we had a Cisco food delivery truck arrive at 3am and thought road construction started just outside, it didn't stop until 7am! Needless to say it was a very sleepless night. All in all the bar staff is friendly and the food is pretty good. Good venue for small corporate meetings with access to fun local bars.

My boyfriend and I booked a room for a Thursday night, so we got the weekday (read: cheaper) rate. With the money we saved on the price of the room, we decided to get the "romantic getaway" package. The package included a bottle of champagne in the room when we arrived, a four course dinner, and a deluxe breakfast the next morning. The champagne was pretty decent! Definitely not a super spendy bottle, but decent quality. No headaches the next morning! We brought our bottle with us to our dinner and nobody complained. I thought that was nice, since many restaurants don't allow you to bring your own alcohol. Dinner was fantastic! We got to choose an appetizer to share, soup or salad each, an entree each, and a dessert each. Out of three choices, we compromised on the artichoke dip with toasted french bread for the appetizer. We both went with the soup--a great chicken noodle! A little unimaginative for a fancy restaurant, but really tasty. I chose the linguine with smoked chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce, and my boyfriend had the meat kabobs. Giant shrimp, pieces of sausage, and chunks of steak. We were both really impressed by dinner! By the time dessert rolled around, we were both too stuffed to move. On top of that, neither of us really has much of a sweet tooth. They had excellent choices, and let us pack them up to take to our room. Caramel apple pie for him, Bailey's cheesecake for me. Plus, they packed up over 3/4 of my pasta dish that I was too full to eat. I would have to say the only downer to our stay was that the rooms don't have refrigerators in them. Our ice bucket for the champagne had a crack in the bottom, so it leaked icy water all over the desk it was on. The room was spacious and had a great view of the river and the bridge. The staff was really nice. We met up with one of the managers, and he was running a scotch/whiskey and cigar event. At the end of the night, he let us each have a small sip of one of the fancy liquors, which was great, since we both had colds. Cleared us right up! Breakfast in the morning was alright. The food and service were good, but the "deluxe breakfast" didn't include any beverages! We had to pay for our coffee, which I thought was strange. Oh well. Gratuities for both meals were not included, but service was good, so it was no problem to tip the waitstaff. All in all, the next time we head to Stillwater, I'm sure we'd stay at the Waterstreet Inn again. :)

Stayed here for a little romantic getaway on a Sunday night. Their room rates never go below around the $129 mark so if you're looking for a more economical choice you'll probably have to stay out closer to the highway. This place is full of old charm. Breakfast is included in the rate and was delicious there were three or four menu choices. I didn't check out the Irish Pub but it looked fun. Perfect location in downtown Stillwater, everything you want is within walking distance.

Great place to stay and dine for a romantic weekend. Birthday surprise for me: romance package with champagne, wine and cheese, and dinner and breakfast package. Our room was a lovely vault suite with the jacuzzi and fireplace in the room. The bathroom was small, but adequate. This is definitely a historic building and quite a different experience from a typical hotel. Beautiful rooms, hallways, and check in area. When we were there, they had just decorated for christmas and had a gorgeous christmas tree in the registration area. Charlies pub was SO fun: there was an irish folk music duo the evening we went, and it was a great time. They had some inventive drink recipes too. LOTS of Jameson on the menu. Good times. :) Dinner was lovely; the dining room has a vast wine list and the restaurant's policy is to only upcharge $15 on a bottle of wine. Great deals on some very nice wines. Food was good, not great, but definitely adequate for the picky palate I tend towards. I had the salmon, seared rare upon my request. The fish was great quality, however, the strange bbq sauce and southwest salsa served on top of it was off-putting. Scraping off the topping served me well. The twice baked potato I recieved as the side was delightful. Creamy, a bit garlicky, and crispy on the russet edges. YUMMM. My SO had the filet and lobster tail. The lobster was tiny, more of a prawn but it was cooked well. He let me try the filet= excellent. Overall a very memorable birthday gift! Would recommend to anyone.

A couple bad experiences here in the past. Hopefully they have things figured out now. Went for a Sunday buffet brunch and had reservations. Got there and they closed the buffet down ar noon. Website said 1:00. Ordered off the menu. Child had a hot dog. When it came out it just did not look right. I stabbed it with fork and it was hard as a rock. Picked it up with my fingers and it snapped in 1/2 like a piece of old dry kindling. Obviously nukked to death. Sent it back for a replacement. Went another time and sat outside on the large patio. Had the barbecued ribs with the homemade baked beans with applewood smoked bacon. The beans were horrible and obviously out of the can and not even decent canned beans! Pointed that out to the server and she told us that they were canned. Replaced with another side dish. Mistakes happen but something seriously wrong here. Hopefully they got things straight now for their own sake.

Tacky. Opulent. A bit gaudy? Totally. It's a mish-mashed relic of style borrowing from the Old West, the 1940's and everyone's idea of what old-fashioned glam is supposed to look like. But seriously? Trust me when I say this isn't a bad thing for Water Street Inn. We came here for Easter brunch and in between laughing at the disparity between the over-the-top decor and the earthy Minnesota personalities of the people who worked there, we found a very satisfying buffet that was quite good. I counted at least 3 separate dining areas here--we were seated in one that had an old-world safari theme that included wallpaper, artwork and hand-painted designs on the ceiling. A half wall separated our table from a main thoroughfare so our meal was a bit loud (there were children racing up and down the hallway the entire time--I blame the Easter candy induced sugar rushes for that, I'm sure those little darlings are perfect angels the rest of the time). The other two dining rooms looked even larger and were also packed so it probably wouldn't have been quiet regardless of where we were seated. Fruit and cheese were in abundance, just like any self-respecting Easter brunch should hope to have. They also had a fair selection of breakfasty items like herb & cheese scrambled eggs (that were actually moist--a definite plus for any eggs that are served buffet style), a to-die-for peach amaretto French toast (also moist and delicious) and perfectly crisp bacon and sausages. I counted at least two different wild rice salads, which really should be a requirement for any Minnesota buffet because wild rice is love. My personal favorite was the cranberry wild rice although I heard the wild rice salad with bacon and mango was also delish. Seafood dishes were also very well represented at this spread: seafood penne, a giant on-the-bone salmon, potato crusted halibut and more that I've already forgotten. They also had a large selection of "comfort food" dishes such as chicken marsala, lamb stew, roast veggies, sliced ham and prime rib. I barely had room for dessert, which was also excellent. There were so many different kinds of fruit pies, chocolate cakes, cheesecake, petit fours, cookies, etc. that I couldn't even count. I want to come back some day and try something from the regular menu.

Went to Water Street Inn on Saturday Aug. 8th. Was not busy because it just finished raining out. Sat out on the patio. The service was very slow. At least, it was not impressive. My boyfriend ordered the ribs and I ordered the Sea Bass. His ribs were extremely spicy, but he is not one to complain, so didn't. My sea bass tasted good, and the presentation was good, but parts of it were like undercooked and parts were like overcooked. After we got home from there, within 2 hours I was deathly ill. Excruciating pain in my tummy. Could hardly breathe. Then a lot of dizziness, and hot. Started coming out both ends. :-) I called the restaurant the next morning. Was still so weak that I could barely even hold my cell phone. The gal was pleasant, but referred me to a guy named Chuck. Said he would call me Monday. Monday came and went. Never called. So that Friday, I called back, and was told I need to talk to Mick, the restaurant head chef. I did. He was sooooo nice, and asked how he could make it better. I told him I would like him to reimburse us for the meal at least. He offered to do what he can. Then I never heard anything until Saturday. I think it was Chuck. Not real sure, but whoevery it was, he said he was also the restaurant manger. He went through this spiel (sp?) telling me how he has all this health safety training and that he knows I don't have food poisoning. That it never hits a person that fast. He said it doesn't hit for 24-48 hrs. I was told that since I didn't go to the hospital or call the food poisoning hot-line, then there is nothing he can do for me. I asked if he would at least reimburse our meals. He said no. How would I know that I should go to the hospital for food poisoning to get my money back for food served there that made me sick? I do not have med. insurance and cannot afford to run to the hospital. Would he have paid for that? hmmm He was so rude to me, that I would never return to that place, and will spread the word how bad they are. I have read since, about this type of poisoning. It is called, scombroid fish poisoning and is found in sea bass. It is from fish that is not refrigerated properly or handled properly. I am reporting this to MN health dept. Do not go here. I have friends that have had very bad experiences also with bad food and service here. Awful!

This place is OLD! And cool, and creepy!! It's like being on the set of some horror movie!! I mean that in the best way possible! I don't even know how to describe it, you'd have to see it for yourself. My room had a fireplace and whirlpool. Resonably priced, great location right in downtown Stillwater.

We had a certificate for a free night. It was a great suite with fireplace and jacuzzi. Quite frankly it's always nice when we get to watch HGTV since we don't have cable at home, but to watch it from a hot tub? Aces. Balcony had a splendid view of the bridge, and the whole St. Croix valley. Also, the place was pretty empty when we were there, so the hallways made me think of The Shining. Awesome. It struck me as everything a luxury hotel from the gilded age should be, but without all the modern accessories - no mini-fridge, but a four-poster bed, etc. Quite frankly I found that really charming. The shower lacked light and shelf space, but it's an old building, and I'll allow that it's probably not the easiest place to rewire or remodel. Front desk staff was more than helpful, going out of their way to make us comfortable, and when I explained it was something of a celebratory weekend, they tossed in an extra night at a discounted rate. A good thing since it rained our entire first day. The complimentary breakfast was excellent - Cinnamon French Toast was a really interesting balance of spice and sweet. My one and only gripe would be that it seems like they don't try as hard as they could to keep the place as nice as it could be. From the strip of wall next to the shower in our room that was missing the wallpaper to the (albeit unused at the time) unswept patio to the banshee-loud creaking doors in the suite, it just seemed like they could have had a little more pride in this gem that they're selling us. I love the place - but I got the feeling management didn't spend as much time as they could with the upkeep. Definitely recommended though. Stop into Charlie's pub while you're there and get a St. Croix Tea - Jameson, Amaretto, and Iced Tea. If you're there in the summer, enjoy it on the patio while watching the boats go by under the lift bridge. Then go back up to your hot tub and enjoy the Victorian opulence.
