This place is my new favorite spot to get authentic Mexican food in the Twin Cities! They have all my favorites from enchiladas to burritos, tacos to sopes, and so much more! If you like spicy salsa you won't be let down by coming here either. The ambience and decor is as unique as it is appealing! They have created a truly genuine vibe that enhances a traditional Mexican feel with vibrant regional appeal. For any die hard MN sports fans, you may not appreciate their loyalty to Chicago sports- but don't let that dissuade you from experiencing their unbelievable spread of food! The service is on-point and friendly, the food leaves you wanting more, and the atmosphere is as legit as they come. Moral of the story: if you want some REAL, delicious Mexican food, then you need to visit Taco Loco!

The place is a fun destination but maybe a little over priced which is why the three stars. I will pay for organic or super unique, but this is just fresh mexican. The food is good and fresh and happy hour offers a different option every night. They deliver to boats who dock at the city docks in excelsior in the summer. Sit at the bar at sunset and get a free shot that you do as a group shot every night. Guess that's why you have to pay for the chips and salsa (which are really good)

Added to the list of places to hit while biking, 4 stars or higher and this one fits! I have heard about the place from a bunch of different places over the last few years (although none of them as trustworthy as my YELP Friends) and have been meaning to make the drive. We'll this turns out to be right on the trail that runs along the Minnesota River Valley. Great path to ride on and great place to stop to refuel. My day of biking CAN include some tacos and a beer, we sat out on the small patio and enjoyed them immensely. The tacos and burrito were super fresh tasting and not super filling. By not super filling I mean it wasn't filled with rice and lettuce to stretch the shell and make them look huge but they were filled with very fresh tasting meat and fresh vegetables. Made after we ordered and well worth the short wait for the food. I highly recommend the trail for a great ride on a sunny day and insist you stop here and enjoy some fantastic, fresh and very authentic Mexican food to make the trip complete. KT,

Family loves this joint! Tostadas were new for littlest son (9) and he said Awesome and scrumptious! I had a taco salad minus the shell which was great. Meat was tasty and salsas are excellent. Wife had steak fajitas and were equally awesome. Good cheese dip. Chips are good. Salsa is spicy and delicious.

This place has good food. Authentic and reasonably priced. Sometimes I think it may be on the smaller portion only because I have a big appetite but it always is the perfect amount and then some. The chips and salsa are nothing we've ever had before. It's spicy just the way I like it. It is not your regular kind of salsa. I always get the barbocoa tacos as do my wife now. My wife used to get the chicken chimichanga all the time which she says is really good. Their chili is super spicy. Spicy enough that we couldn't even finish it. What's nice is that you order at the counter and then they bring you the food. The food is great and I definitely recommend coming here even though it's quite the drive for us. We usually make it out once in a blue moon. But this place is the place to go. Plus they have punch cards.

Not sure where to start. We booked Taco Loco catering services for a birthday event (200 people). From the day I contacted them, up until the minute before they arrived at the event, they were fast in correspondence and dealt with the 800 changes I kept making. When they arrived, they had a staff of about 10 people, who had every set up and running in 15 minutes. It was like a factory running well oiled and in sync. I love Taco Loco's food, but figured when you take it away from the restaurant you will lose a slight bit of the quality. WRONG!!!! They actually COOK in front of you, and everything comes out just as perfect as at the restaurant! I took one bite and was BLOWN away. Unfortunately, our outdoor party had a rain storm sweep through. People stood in a line and bared the torrential downpour, just so they could get their food. I walked out to the entire party to check and see how they were enjoying it, and first time Taco Loco people were absolutely satisfied. I had so many people ask for their contact information and plan to use them as well. I know FOR A FACT, I will most definitely be using their services again. The food was amazing and spoke for itself, but the service just knocked it out of the ballpark. It was a grand slam, and I cant thank them enough! Thank you to the Taco Loco Family, you made everything perfect and I am more than grateful!

Filthy.... Less than zero flavor.... Bring your own wash rag to clean the tables, over 1/2 the tables were dirty and empty. Don't sit by a window where kids have smeared prints all over the glass. Got the 5 tacos for $6. Meat was just ground burger, three tiny little tomatoes sprinkled on top one clump of sour cream in the middle and yesterday's lettuce, what cheese? The taco was less than 1/2 full. Taco bell does it better... Trophy wife got Tex Mex taco. Stuff with potatoes and rice and nacho cheese. They had less flavor than the tacos and we are still trying to figure out how it could be less flavor than the tacos. I'd just avoid, I love Mexican food and there are tons of great choices.

Very Unimpressed The several times I've been there I have been let down even more. These guys have no idea how to run a restaurant. I never want to feel intimidated or bullied by the staff of a restaurant while ordering, there for they will not receive my business. -food is crap -service is even worse -bad tempered staff who don't get an order right (I ordered to go and they brought in out in house style, when I informed them i had ordered to go... Of course its my fault)

  • Riley C.

Staff is friendly. Taco's are amazing and affordable. Chips & Salsa while you wait is a nice little touch (more on the salsa later). Chicago sports team theme throughout. Salsa used to be one of my favorite reasons to stop at Taco Loco, but some time in the past year they went inferno on the hot salsa, and now its almost impossible to eat, in fact, can only be mildly consumed with a 50/50 Hot/Mild combo... it's a 5 rating as soon as they get the salsa figured out.

  • Andrew H.

This is a small town family run Mexican joiny, with amazing salsa (it's spicy). It's a super small place and not exactly the most comfortable, with paper plates and plastic silverware so I usually get all my stuff to-go, but It's a nice change of pace from the bland Chipotle chain type places.

I drive all the way from Orono to get a REAL taco here. Corn tortilla. Perfectly seasoned and grilled steak. Onion. Cilantro. It's like I'm "back home"... sweet home Chicago! I have searched the twin cites for Tacos like this and now that I found them I'll drive to get them! Go Bears, Hawks, Bulls and Cubs! (sorry Sox don't make the list... I don't follow minor league ball.)

Worst Mexican place I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I use to go here for the cheap tacos, however after our last experience I would rather go to Taco Bell and risk it. We ordered our tacos along with a quesadilla and when I took a bite out of the quesadilla, you could tell the chicken came from a can. It was gross and I would never come back here again.

Seriously....cheese wiz on chips is not nachos!!! How anyone can eat here is beyond me. Go to El Toro where they make real food! !!!

I stopped in at Taco Loco after a trip to Valleyfair last season. It's OK Mexican food. I just forgot I don't like beans. How did I forget that? I don't know... sunstroke? I got my food to go but I am guessing eating there is a better experience. They give you chips and salsa while you wait for your food but you better eat them while you wait because they are not to go friendly at all. So if you're in Shakopee, it's an option. If you're in the city try something like Pineda tacos.

This place has some delicious pastor and the pork is pretty tasty too. We also had a beef taco, but like most beef taco's, there usually isn't a lot of flavor. Don't get me wrong, it was still good and the taco was devoured. This is also the place where we had a chance to try Lengua. What's that you ask? It's beef tongue! Like most things this exotic, texture and what it actually is plays with your mind. For me, I just dug right in, never though about it and it was actually pretty darn good. For my wife, she had to get past the mind thing, but she too though it was pretty good.

Excellent tacos, excellent burritos, mind blowingly good HOT salsa. Little pricey, but I don't mind so much.

#5 with onions and an orange Jaritos please! I have yet to have anything I didn't like from this place. From the carnitas tacos to the home made hot sauce. I don't live in town anymore but I still make special trips to get my fix. Come get some!

Yo, I know one of the owners, Noe Mendez, since like the late 1990s. Noe and his family fo sho HOLDS IT DOWN FOR MEXICANS. He opened up this joint in 2004/ 2005 and it has been legit since the get. Every summer they got hydraulic and eating contests yo. Everyone is Mexican, freal! Also, I would like to claim and remind Taco Loco that I ate the very first Super Burrito in the summer of 2005 in 2 minutes and 17 seconds. It was that good! LOL!!! This is verified by Noe and former employee, Jake Lundberg. But back to the food, this is some real Mexican-ish with real flava and taste! If you don't like the food, you a sucka and a trick. Go and eat that whack garbage cause you don't know what's real! Support and eat from the real Mexicans holding it down on the Southside of the Twin Cities. ~Viet. dude P.S. One of the only joints I know servin' Sopapillas. You don't know what that is? EXACTLY fool.

BEST tacos I've ever had. Everything is homemade and DELICIOUS. Their salsa is amazing - it is really hard for me to find anything spicy enough but this does it. The barbacoa tacos (soft shell) are one of my all-time favorite foods. This place has a cult-following for a reason. You will never regret a drive or a wait for this place.

With all those rave reviews, I had to try the taco plate at Taco Loco, Shakopee. I tried many authentic Mexican tacos while I was in California, and I know how they should taste like. As I sat down, they served me a small bowl of tortilla chips with salsa. The tortilla chips were not tasty at all; it's the cheapest kind that you can find in the grocery store and the salsa tasted like it's out of a can, not hand-made. The main dish consisted of two tacos (the picture on the menu have three with description saying "two tacos") with Spanish rice and re-fried beans. Right off the bat, the re-fried beans were smelly. I tried a lot of re-fried beans, but it was the one of the worst that I tried. Spanish rice were ok; I would give it three stars if I was only going to eat the rice. The highlight... the Steak Tacos... these smelled bad. The beef they used were probably the cheapest kind of beef. Also, the portion was so small, I was still hungry after I finished. If they are going to serve mediocre food, the least they could do is to serve out enough portion imo. I spent more than $8 including a bottle of Jarritos and felt like I was robbed. I would never go back there again. Taco bell is much better choice than this place.

Yummy and authentic. Free chips with your order is a nice touch. Spicy pork is excellent (but definitely spicy!), burrito suizo is tasty. Good sides, all well done. Decent prices too.

I had a spicy pork taco and a carnitas taco. I really loved the traditional carnitas taco. The chips were excellent. The red sauce was way too hot for me. But I am not very good with spicy things.

Found this gem while wanting to try a different Mexican restaurant. Only problem I encountered was it's on the east side of town, not the west side. After ordering pastor tacos I got my drink and chips and salsa. These were the right portion for one person. I don't need a huge basket of endless chips and salsa, and it's not the healthiest either. The food took a while to get as they make it as you order it, and they were hot! They needed to cool down for a while, which allowed me to observe the area. I drove seven miles to get to this place for lunch everyday, because it was that good. I believe this deserves five stars, because it is as good as it gets.

Taco Loco has one of the best steak tacos in the world and I've spent a fair amount of time in Texas and California. I don't think anything they have comes in a can ...it's like everything is fresh. I can't go there very often because it's so far away so I haven't gone through their whole menu like some others. See other reviews.

What place has everyone been reviewing? P.S. the tortillas are NOT homemade, i asked after a bad meal!!! Just ate with a friend and the service was terrible with a guy telling me there are no menus and nothing else. The menu is on the wall and the traffic by there would be ok with a smile or pleasant greeting or something. No salsa bar just one type that is plain and hot. I like hot but also like variety! A few free chips and crap salsa later the guy brought out the saltiest steak fajitas and burrito I have had at a resturant. I have eaten in many states and Mexico and would list authentic Mexican food as one of my top two favorite foods but this place is junk. Burnt salty steak with rude service?!? Nah, I will just get some bbq right next door nexttime or go to Dangerfields comedy club right next to it and spend a bit more on GOOD food. Complete dissapointment and my lowest rating yet.

Having lived in Shakopee for over 2 years, I can't believe it took me this long to try Taco Loco. It's a huge staple and my friends have raved about it! We finally ventured in and I tried the Burrito Suizo Loco, #11. I ordered the lunch size and my husband ordered the dinner size. I think they still actually still gave us two dinner sizes! Very kind of them. My husbands meat choice was the spicy pork and I had the chicken. I did try his spicey pork and though he was a drooling mess over it, I wasn't a fan myself. I really enjoyed my chicken. It was delicious and juicy... not dry at all. The cheese was delicious. Excellent fried rice. I can't believe we got all that for $15!! (not including tip) The only complaint I have about this place is the silverware. It's pretty cheap plastic and hard to eat with. I had a tough time sawing through my burrito with that little knife! I wish they had regular silverware. It won't detour us from going here again, though. I'm already itching to try their famous taco's... yummo!

Food is good, but I find it just a little above fast food. Given a choice I will eat here over any other Mexican food in Shakopee, but I've definately had better more authentic Mexican food. Plastic utensils and no fountain soda are big negatives in my book.

I literally just ate here 5 minutes ago! This place is great! Perfectly spiced food thats authentic. Been to San Diego a few times and these guys can compete with the best. Not to mention all the great things they do for the community, from hosting events, sponsoring local mma fighters, and lifting the local Latino population up. Call ahead and avoid a greasy mess at the chains and itll be ready for ya to take home!

I have lived in Minnesota my entire life, 15 away from this little gem and never knew about it!!! Taco Loco is a great place to get great AUTHENTIC mexican food! I ordered the Chicken Tacos which made my taste buds explode! The chicken was ultra flavorful and the ingredients seemed to be very fresh. And I now CRAVE their chips! The salsa is a bit too spicy for me, but if you're looking for a great salsa with heat to it, this is your place. The only problem I had was the chicken was sooo flavorful and moist that it got my tortilla soggy :(

Decided to finally check out the "Best Mexican Food in Minnesota". I arrived at the opening time posted on the door, 11:00am, and the chairs were still on the tables and someone mopping the floor told me to wait outside for 5 minutes. So, after my 5 minute wait in the parking lot, I went to the counter to order. As it was my first time at Taco Loco, and hearing so much about how good it was, I had a few questions about some of the items. I asked the cashier "Is the Spicy Pork like chorizo?". His reply "It's spicy pork." Again I asked if it was like chorizo or what, he said it was "chunks". Okay then! So I stopped asking questions since dude wasn't acting too friendly and thought I'd let the food do the talking. I ordered the Spicy Pork burrito and a steak taco "authentic style" or whatever. Burritos come with beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, guac, and maybe cheese. I ordered mine without beans. The food came out and looked good! I bit into my Spicy Pork burrito and got a mouth full of shredded pork. No "chunks". The flavor was fine but as I took a few more bites and realized there was no guac, I was bummed. I went and looked at the sign again to make sure I didn't mistake the listed guac as an upcharge, and it was certainly supposed to be on it. I asked the new front counter guy if there was indeed supposed to be guac on the burrito and he said "yeah the avacados we got in are way too hard to use. It would be impossible to put it on there". Sweet. No guac, no heads up either. He asked if I would like some extra sour cream instead and I declined. I ate a few bites of the steak taco that seemed to be legit but had a hot red sauce/salsa on it, which to me goes against the traditional onion and cilantro, and took away from the flavor of the steak too much. The steak did have a good flavor. The food was better than your average tex-mex type place and all the Loro and Toro's out there no doubt. But, due the the D-Bags running the place, I'll stick to the real place I Love in Chaska.

I am still digging this place and to make it even better, you can bring home their home made salsa (hot sauce). This stuff is so awesome I have put it on everything. it makes my Chorizo con Huevos on Sunday mornings go to a whole new level. Bring home a jar, cup or whatever they will put it in next time you visit.

Tucked away in a converted Dairy Queen across the street from some grain elevators, this is one of those diamonds in the rough in the Twin Cities. There's almost no ambiance unless you consider a grove of trees and some picnic benches under a hard-shell tent in the parking lot romantic. And waiting for your order involves either standing around or listening to your car stereo. But here's where it starts to get interesting... The wonderful aromas will awaken fond memories to anyone who's every spent time in Guadalajara or Mexico City. Always cooked to order, each plate or dish is lovingly crafted out of wonderfully fresh ingredients, and assembled into an authentic taste of Mexico -- a little fiesta for your taste buds. While reasonably priced (carne asada tacos are around $1.70/ea), portions are typical of a family-owned tacqueria. Of course, you're coming here for the food, not the atmosphere. But just come here if you want to try some seriously good Mexican food -- especially the tacos.

I loved this place when it opened at its first location in Shakopee, and I love it even more now that it has relocated. Shakopee has many chain restaurants and it is refreshing to have somewhere original and different to go. The food and service are wonderful. I would particularly recommend the steak tacos. Mmmmm.

Great authentic Mexican fast food. In other countries fast food has not been perverted like it has been in ours. They make you really realize that when you eat at this place. The menu is extesive and chances are you will be able to try something you never have before, but if you if you have it will still be great. Don't pass this one without stopping. This is not a place you go in and sit down. You can only drive through or order your food through the front window. They have some picinix tables outside, but I always bring my food back home.

First just to settle any confusion, the current Taco Loco location in Shakopee DOES have a dining room. Some older reviews state that there is only drive-in service, which may have been the case at one time. But now they have a very nice dining area - yes, akin to a fast food restaurant - but SO much more inviting than, for example, a Taco Bell. Cute little booths along the outside; tables in the middle; and at the very center of the room is a wonderful circular gas fireplace. We happened to go there after freezing outside at Murphy's Landing in December, so we were in heaven next to that fireplace. Very cozy and inviting. Now on to the food. Considering that this place is disguised as a fast-food taco joint, I was amazed at the freshness and quality of the food. And the menu is quite extensive; amazing that a little place like this can pull off such variety and keep everything so fresh. I had the steak taco and it was wonderful. All the burritos come standard with jalapenos and guacamole in them - unless you omit them during your order, of course. Our children had the taco kids' meal and the burrito kids' meal, and both of them ate very well (unheard of). The rice and refried beans that accompany every plate - including the kids' plates - are also very good. Yes, I said PLATE - because after you order, they bring you your food nicely arranged on a plate - not just some paper-wrapped mess. A small basket of chips and salsa was also served with our meal free of charge. One word of warning: the salsa is very good, but very hot. If you're not a fan of hot salsa, you might want to avoid. Regarding the price - Someone recently wrote a review in which they complained that refills on the free chips cost $2.50. I can't say whether that's true or not since we didn't get a refill, but the online menu shows an order of chips to be $1.85. Regardless, come on - this isn't a sit-down Mexican restaurant charging you an arm and a leg for a burrito - instead they are very reasonably priced. They can't completely give the food away, can they? Even if they do charge for refills, I'm going back in any case. We paid a total of $27 to feed two adults and two kids - and considering the quality of the food, that's an awesome deal in my book. All in all - highly recommended.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
