Good food and service. Hollandaise sauce is pretty good and the portion sizes to price ratio are good. The only thing that was troubling was the screaming kids: they have a play area near the front door so you may be greeted, upon entering , with braying kids throwing toys and their depressed looking parents trying to ignore them in a moment of zen.

I like this restaurant it has had its ups and downs over the years with food but lately I've gone it's great service and food is good simple tasty food that I like .. my good comfort food but not a greasy spoon or too simple . their bread is fresh love it . they could update their plates they serve on and the cheese cake I had wasn't that great it tastes sort of old or out of a box maybe it was too cold because they keep it in a cooler better to have taken home to eat it later same with the cake I had earlier.

I have driven by this place many a time and finally decided to stop by today. My parents and I were looking for a nice place to grab a quick bite and I thought about this place after hearing people rave about it for years. Dining room is bigger than I thought it would be. Lots of big booths and tables. Decent sized menu with breakfast served all day which is a plus considering I love breakfast fare any time of the day. Ordered the Eggs Commodore with sausage which was really good. I love sausage patties and this one was just the right thickness with the right amount of hollendaise sauce. Mom ordered one of the cinnamon rolls which looked really good. She said it was very tasty. It came with a huge dollop of whipped butter. Dad ordered a a single buttermilk pancake which he remarked was really tasty. Service was decent. Nice looking cakes, desserts waiting to entice you as you walk in. The menu section with the Samosas etc kind of threw me for a loop. Interesting... Basic comfort food place.

All the menu items are good. Pretty regular diner fare, nothing terrible, nothing incredible. With the exception of the cinnamon rolls. THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD.

I've been going here a little more frequently, always for take out. They are really nice people, and the food is always good. They make "off menu" items if you ask, and it appears that they have a very good lunch business. The desserts look really really good although I only admire them. I pick sweet rolls up for my mom on occasion, and while the dough is good, they are REALLY gooped up with frosting. She finds them cloyingly sweet. But still, the food is good and the menu varied and in general not too salty, so I'd certainly recommend them.

Came here with the in laws and had dinner... We didn't get there until 730 and they close at 8. The waitress seemed really stressed out or frazzled? She was quick but not the most friendly. Three of us wanted the special but they only had enough for two..it was end of the night. Father in law wanted fish originally but she said they were out...when she came back to tell us they didn't have enough pork chops she offered walleye? It became kind of annoying because then another person wanted walleye as well but she said it was to much trouble to unthaw two instead of one. Confused? Me too! Seconds later she came back because we all ordered baked potatoes and they only had two left....it was a lot of back and forth to say the least. So either the only waitress and the cook were not communicating or the waitress was a ditz? Up for debate I guess. Dinner came out pretty quick and everything looked fantastic. Taco salad was really good, hubby said chicken was perfect and so was the shell, only complaint was salsa was from a jar (he is a snot) and he wanted avocado..where is he from? This is a bakery! Lol Pork chops looked absolutely amazing, visually amazing! Taste? A tad dried out. Served with FRESH sautéed brussel sprouts! Omg! Soooo good! Everyone loved the brussel sprouts. Not sure how the troublesome walleye was, father in law got that and he would probably eat cardboard if you put it in front of him, he isn't picky. Besides the confusion..we would definitely go back!

I expected a dumpy Midwestern cafe with bland food, but you can't tell a book by its cover. The decor was more up-to-date than what I would normally expect (think Bed Bath and Beyond), and it does seem they are trying to appeal to the yuppie crowd, serving wine and... South Asian food! The menu had momos and samosas. I just had to try it, so along with my Reuben (which was not particularly amazing but good), I ordered a mango lassi and samosas. The lassi had different spices than what I've had elsewhere, but it was sweet and tasty. I can't vouch for the overall authenticity of the samosas, but the filling at least tasted very similar to what I've had at Indian restaurants in the U.S. So, I will be going back because it's close, and to try the momos. This was indeed a pleasant surprise. Update (3/15/14): I returned for lunch yesterday, looking forward to South Asian food. They drastically trimmed the menu, and there are no more lassis and samosas. I was really bummed. They still had momos, and added kothe (fried momos). I had a vegetarian curry, and asked for it "spicy." It had more kick than what I was expecting--a notch less than a "medium" that I ordered at a University Ave. eatery. The veggies were less cooked than I was expecting, but otherwise it was a solid curry. The diminished supply and demand is to be expected, I imagine, since nothing about the exterior or name suggests ethnic food. Next time I want samosas I'll have to go elsewhere.

Just average. Not terrible, but we are not leaving happy and elated from a great meal. Food wasn't "bad", but it wasn't great. Husband had the breakfast burrito...salsa was seriously lacking. Veggie hash was ok, French toast was ok. This place is average. With the variety of choices in the cities, we will not be going back.

I have only had breakfast here, but if what you want for breakfast is a greasy spoon, this is the place. Their bacon is excellent and the hash browns are always perfectly crispy. Definitely one of our favorite breakfast spots for your straight-forward, no frills breakfast.

So I have not eaten here. But I did stop by this morning on the hunt for some baked yumminess to take into the office for a special occasion. The gentleman there was more than happy to oblige, offering suggestions and doing a lovely job wrapping up the cake I selected. Sure I will be back to sample the fare and the legendary caramel rolls, but for now, 4 stars for very good service very early in the morning. Oh, and the cake was delicious and a huge hit at my office.

We were looking for a place at 1030 on a Saturday that could fit us in quickly. They were just the ticket. Breakfast for two of us and lunch (hamburger) for the other. Bakery goods (buns and rolls and toast) were amazing. I highly recommend as the neighborhood feel if this restaurant in highland area was wonderful and added to the experience.

Why eat at Perkins and the like when this place has charm and much better food? I have only eaten breakfast here, but it has never disappointed. The caramel rolls are to die for, and the weekday breakfast special (served until 11:30 am) with many full meals offered under $5 is possibly the best breakfast deal in St. Paul.

I ordered the momos. I spent a semester in Nepal twenty years ago and have eaten momos plenty of times since. These were the first momos that really truly tasted like what I remember. Service was friendly; we were there for lunch and I got ravenous before my food showed up, and so I flagged down the waitress and asked her to bring me something, anything, to keep me from keeling over at the table. She brought me out a thick slice of astonishingly good bread, and some butter to spread on it. Anyway, I'll definitely be back.

Good, traditional food done well with a good wine list and half-price bottle specials. (Tuesday and Wednesday?) Great place to take a friend, and the parents love it too. So much more room to move around in than the Grille. Great bakery, too.

Went here with a friend to check it out before a show. Very diner-esque type place - nothing fancy about the decor. Kinda like an independent perkins type place is how i would describe it. The food was decent - I got the curry - which had zero veggies in it and it looked like a big glob of yellow in a bowl - and was served with a side of rice. It was tasty but the presentation needs some work .. . .or more color on the plate or in the curry . .. .My friend got the denver sandwich - which is essentially a sandwich with an omelet inside. That was pretty good. We also got a big piece of chocolate cake which had AMAZING frosting. I would recommend coming here for inexpensive sandwiches and dessert - or breakfast - which would seem to be more their style.

Giving 5 stars because not only was I looking for a cozy place with home cooked style breakfast but this place had friendly staff and the food was exceptional! I had the tasty "Cajun breakfast" and my wife had french toast. We found the cinnamon was way better than the original, but it was the homemade bread that made it so good! And they had homemade jam to boot. We got a caramel roll to go, it looked so good, and it was. We'll be back.

I had to eat here yet again the other day and have to say that I just plain don't like this place. The only reason I've eaten here multiple times is because my grandparents like it. However, I suspect that their taste buds aren't what they used to be. Last time I was at their place, they gave me fermented apple juice that they hadn't noticed had gone bad. This is just another place where it's more about quantity than quality. Call me unamerican, but I'd rather eat a reasonable portion of higher quality food than a large quantity of mediocre food. The waddlers who frequent this place probably beg to differ with this philosophy. Among things I've tried have been the liver (so nasty that I haven't been able to enjoy liver since) and a steak salad (completely flavorless, chewy steak (i ordered medium rare) over an unimpressive salad

Great ready for grease and "Flo". If you are looking for the stereotypical breakfast atmosphere, this is the place. Our waitress looked like "Flo" from Dumb and Dumber. My food was laced in grease and the aesthetics were on the worn down side. But this might be the expectation, as I felt like I was in a unique Denny's. The food tasted decent, though taking a year off my life from the oil and greasy-yuckiness may not have been worth it.

This is my favorite restaurant in the Highland community. The food is basic, but to me, it's like going home to Mom's only better, because no one fusses at me! This is the kind of restaurant that serves more than delicious food, which they certainly do. It also serves time, which is a much rarer offering in most restaurants these days. I've seen women playing cards much of an afternoon at a back table, and I can sit and enjoy my food, read on my Kindle or write as long as I want. I've been going there for years and have never felt hurried out the door no matter how busy they are. It's a great place to meet a friend and be able to talk without feeling overheard by everyone else or needing to shout at each other across a table even in a booth. Friendly, courteous staff, and did I mention that the food is delicious?

My first visit to this restaurant was this week, but I have been hearing about it for months from my mom who loves the place. When I visited I was with my parents, my kids (a 3 month old and a 4-year old) and a 10 year old niece. It was my mom's third visit that week, and I think she is starting to become a regular as many of the staff greeted her personally, and our server obviously had waited on her before and knew many of her preferences. The server was attentive, knowledgeable and courteous. The food arrived in a very timely manner, and despite several minor modifications to the standard menu items, everything came as we ordered. The food was good - I had a Rachel which was good, but I envied my dad's chicken salad served in a half cantaloupe. My mom ordered a pancake that was so large we could have used it for shelter in inclement weather. It is a very nice neighborhood restaurant, I can see why my mom likes it.

For years I begged Barbara Hunn to put a Key's in this area. She wasn't interested, but a couple of her staff from Raymond Ave. were thinking the same thing. In a strip mall between Aspen Medical Group and a Lee Ann Chin. Plenty of parking. This really is like a home away from home. As if you're eating in your LR/DR and the food's coming out of your kitchen. Two very large rooms, and total organization and places for everything. They have early bird specials for breakfast. My favorite is the cajun mixed in with delicious hash browns, and topped with a house made hollandaise sauce. You can tell by the light yellow color and lighter texture. I hate those thick gloppy sauces from a mix. It's not all that difficult to make. Almost like that of a good beer cheese soup. It's one of the best I've ever had. They offer a lot of soups. The cream soups can be super thick at times. I just get some boiling water to thin it out if necessary. Pretty good sandwiches, but the bread is too small. It draws a large senior citizen and family crowd. It offers Nepal dishes as well, because Himalayan is their sister restaurant. As you enter, a wide range of desserts are right there to tempt you. Beer and wine are offered for a cozy evening atmosphere. Great owners and servers.

Breakfast: Favorite meal for a meeting. 62 y.o semi-retiree here. Met here a few days ago with a friend to talk about stratigic planning for outreach and feeding ministries at our big DT Mpls congregation. Soemtimes, these frequent conversations / dreamings can go on for 2+ hours. This is the perfect place for it... Never rushed, usually many table avaiable at the 10 a.m. hour. 7 breakfast on menu - all under $5. Much larger menu available, but these 7 items provided plenty of choice. I like breakfast our, but really don't rave about the standard, neighborhood 'diner' My meal was really good. Great, crispy hash browns, eggs the way I asked for them..Good, and exactly what I either like or dislike about these kind of places... Hey, it's not Vincent. Usually oreder a fresh, piping hot carmel or cinnamon roll (often I add an additional overkill slab of butter - how close to Heaven can you be with butter melting off the roll - and dripping down your chin? (Don't try to pretend you've never created a scenewith too much butter on a cinnamon roll) Lunches are good. Just the kind of sandwiches / burgers you'd expect, at a very resonable price. I join other 'blue-harir's" here for dinner, from time to time. each weekday evening has its own special meal. I like Pot Roast night... Gerneous protions of fall apart meat that tasted like Grandma's _ in my case, this is aGOOD thing). REAL gravey, and ok everything else. This is the kind of place where you can get breakfast all day, and join the other old farts for a full, home-style meal at 4 o'clok (and even get the Seniou discount. Just the place when I don't want to shave before, or iron a shirt. Here's and idea: Can I come for breakfast in my PJ's? That would be perfect.

I stopped by for lunch/dinner today. Had the turkey dinner and dessert. It's a little pricey, but worth it. The turkey dinner was very good. Sauteed and seasoned green beans were the veggie of the day and they were delicious. The mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy and turkey were all perfect. The cranberry sauce was a welcome addition. Came with a hunk of very good bakery bread with butter. It was my second time there. Both times the coffee has been very good. I had the coconut cake for dessert with a little ice cream on the side. The coconut cake was amazingly great. One of the best restaurant desserts I've ever had. They are not just a restaurant but a very good bakery. Both the cake and ice cream came out with whipped cream on top. Which I was at first disappointed by, because if I know that something has whipped cream on it, I always ask for it without because I can't stand the ersatz non-dairy stuff that most places try to pass off as whipped cream. But at Highland, the whipped cream is the real deal and just makes everything better. Everything tasted like authentically good food. No corners cut. If you go, be sure to get dessert.

Every once in a while I will open up my Entertainment coupon book, grab a coupon for something new, and venture off in search of a new find. This week we found ourselves in the Highland Cafe & Bakery - and we'll never find ourselves in there again. I'm going to do this in a Pro vs. Con arrangement. The Pros: - They have kitsch coffee cups with local business advertisements on the side. They look like they would make a perfect Christmas gift for that special someone on your list, if you know what I mean. - The pork chops were flavorful (if over-cooked). The Cons: - Vegetables - the mashed potatoes were a creepy, translucent gray. The green beans were cooked so hard they could easily be mashed to a pulp with a fork. - Meats & Pasta - I had the pork chops. They were flavorful but way over-cooked. The 8-year-old at the table finished a bowl of Mac & Cheese that arrived with a microwaved crust. He's a good sport and eats most anything. - The service - She dropped by to take our order, deliver our order, and collect the tab. - The cost - Here's the kicker. The total for a sandwich, entree, kid's meal and an appetizer was an astounding $58. The food is on par with a school cafeteria. No offense to cafeterias, but nothing is ever prepared "spot-on" when you prepare for a hoard. In this case, at this price, I expect edible food. None of us finished our meals. My final assessment: Never, ever again.

Dad and I went there for breakfast a few weeks ago, and neither of us were overly impressed. Our server appeared to be twelve and was so shy that I had to take the lead during ordering to avoid awkward pauses. The decor is definitely geared toward the elderly (not that there's anything WRONG with that), but it made Perkins feel slightly hip. The prices were a little high... my three pieces of French toast were $7. No sides included at all, just three pieces of bread. Plus, my server neglected to tell me that they offered white or wheat, and I ended up with the latter. Sorry, but for me wheat & sweet make lousy bedfellows. Dad said his food was decent, but to get what he really wanted- eggs, pancakes, hash browns, and perhaps some bacon- his meal would have topped $12, as the menu is semi a la carte. A bit steep for food that I felt ranked slightly below Perkins. The coffee was good, but with so many other places to try in the cities, I doubt I'll be back unless I'm in the 'hood and craving breakfast.
