In search of a light dinner last night while in town visiting my Ma, and we nearly wandered to Panera when I remembered the Zumbro River Cafe was nearby. I'd had a nice meal there over a year ago, and we were pleased again with our visit. I had the walleye sandwich and clam chowder, Ma dug into a tuna melt with a mandarin orange and somethingerother salad. The service was as impeccable as I'd remembered, food is lightly prepared and nicely seasoned, just a real nice honest cafe. I didn't really understand the vaguely Chinese decor until I was reminded that the Wongs own it; that makes sense as an explanation, but still doesn't really fit the space, the food, or the location. If you have time, the Rainbow Cafe in Pine Island is well worth the twenty minute drive, but the Zumbro River Cafe is a very nice option near downtown with ample parking and friendly staff. I'm sure I'll be back.

We read the reviews but my fellow yelpers were a little off on this one. Food - Chocolate chip waffle was merely a waffle with chocolate chips sprinkled on top - not cooked with the batter. Strange. Server recommended this to my kid over salad. Server liked the black bean pulled pork chili however it had a lot of sugar in it. Walleye sandwich was on a 5" sweet roll filled with 1" x 2" thin fillets of tasteless fish. Tarter sauce was also strangely sweet. Fries have a funny sweet coating on them. Service - Server asked, "Would you like fries, soup or salad?" I said, "YES." "Bring all of them I am hungry" I stated. My assumption was that the soup or salad would come out before the meal but it didn't. She brought everything at one time. Waiting for 25min is okay. But not when your fries are cold. My guess is our server seemed younger than the others and may be still be learning the ropes. Good luck I hope you have a better experience than mine.

Great service. Very pleasant space for a relaxing brunch. Family ordered Mac and Cheese, Mongolian noodles, club sandwich, mandarin salad with chicken, grilled cheese and soup. Everything arrived well prepared and pretty quickly.

This is a gem. Nice organic choices. Very small dining area, so large groups: prepare to wait. However, they do their absolute best to get you in. Yet, for our family of four, just a few moments and we are in! Good full menu. We are a divided family, as one always wants lunch, and the others will have breakfast at 3pm!! So have at it. Pancakes, waffles, a sandwich Elvis would be proud of, and the buckets of syrup.

Lunch for a table of 2 Atmosphere: Cute, family-owned, nautical looking set up. Smaller dining area with seating that was a bit closer to the tables next to us, but was okay. Personally, this restaurant was just my cup of tea. Food: They had the perfect amount of variety. Not too huge of a menu, but enough to have something everyone would like. I had the deep fried cod sandwich - it had a crispy crust and flaky white tender meat. I also asked for the wild rice soup and it was very tasty and still hot. My husband had the daily special which was something like an open-faced beef sandwich with mash and gravy. I must say, the beef was full of beefy flavor and it was very tender. We were both very satisfied with our meals. We also had the Chai Carrot Cake....recommended by other Yelpers. Although it was a pretty good carrot cake and the Chai added a nice flavor, it wasn't as special as I was expecting. It could have been a little more moist and (this is a reverse-psychology suggestion) if the slice were smaller, it would feel more like a delicacy instead of a comfort food. Service: Really great. Friendly, helpful and personable. SUGGESTIONS TO THE OWNERS: Add candied carrot bits to garnish the carrot cake. Don't change the cream cheese icing - it was just right. AND like I said before, slice the cake thinner to make people want more! Oh, and if you're baking your own cake...here's a trick from my aunt the wedding cake maker - add a little mayo to the batter to make it more moist. Overall: I really liked it. I would like to return someday to try more!

We used to look forward to a great meal but something has changed ... The chef, management or both. We will not eat there again and would not recommend this cafe to anyone. Try Mc Donald's as it much less expensive.

Breakfast didn't taste all that extraordinary, didn't really like it much. Scrambled eggs were over cooked. But their coffee was good and service is excellent, very friendly :)

Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday. We got the goat cheese & leek quiche, Denver Omlette, and Mexican Omlette. All of it was amazing! The waitress was very friendly and the photos that were up on the walls were really interesting as well. Cute hole-in-the-wall diner.

My wife and I have been married over 35 years, and I don't think we've gone out to breakfast together (unless we were travelling) more than once or twice in all of those years. However, today is her birthday so I Yelp'd a place for breakfast and took her out to eat. We were not disappointed! We each had the Country Breakfast, which was terrific, and it was more food than she could eat. A very nice, clean, casual place for breakfast and brunch.

As advertised, prompt service, reasonable prices and good food. Just don't show up after 1pm if you want breakfast.

Unlike the twin cities, Rochester does not seem to abound with breakfast oriented restaurants. Zumbro River Cafe seems to be one of the exceptions. Situated in a strip mall north of downtown (just west of 17th and Broadway) the interior belies the outside. It is clean and uncluttered with plenty of attention paid to decoration. The food is nice. There are a variety of breakfast standards as well as quiches and pastries. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. I had two eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. Eggs (over medium) were cooked to order. The potatoes were served as american fries - not too greasy and mildly seasoned. The bacon was crisp but still chewy. The toast was rather good. My tablemates had the mexican omelet (yum) as well as biscuits and gravy. They were quite happy with their picks. The wait staff was attentive and polite. I now have to start a Rochester list just to add this place.

I ordered a veggie sandwich which was really good. The coffee was really good too. The chai carrot cake was out of this world. i loved the chai carrot cake. If nothing else, I will definitely go back here for the chai carrot cake. The staff is very friendly and service is very quick.

Perhaps my expectations were a bit high. Zumbro River Cafe serves a decent meal at some decent prices. It's just not a place I'd go out of my way to visit. It's more like the place you bring grandpa to because he doesn't like "stuffy" restaurants, but you think eating at the Canadian Honker every year on his birthday is gross. In short, it's a compromise restaurant. The food was fine, but nothing spectacular. Not really even worth taking home for leftovers, frankly. The service was absolutely five stars, though. This place is nice and clean, and the waitstaff is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you have low expectations, you'll be overwhelmed! Just don't set yourself up for disappointment based on all these five star reviews.

My wife and I tried the Zumbro River Cafe the first time about a month ago and it is now our go to place in Rochester for lunch. The soups are all homemade and delicious. My wife had the chicken noodle which consisted of a very tasty broth without the heavy salt taste you find in many chicken soups. I had the pot roast with garlic mashed potatoes - great comfort food. Delicious coffee and desserts also. I hope to get there for breakfast sometime to see if it's as good as lunch.

My wife and I ate breakfast here for the first time this morning. The food was excellent and the price very reasonable. Very courteous people. We will definitely return for brunch in the future.

The Zumbro River Cafe is a new operation by Dennis Wong and his wife, Lynn, whose various restaurants I have liked for almost 20 years. It shares the front door and beverages with his Dunn Bros. coffeehouse on Elton Hills Drive NW. It's a sit-down restaurant; our waitress was an old employee from Dennis's former Wongs Chinese Restaurant. The menu was tilted towards comfort food, dinner entrees between $14 and $20. You can check the decor on their blog. My wife and I dropped in to check it out on our way shopping, not particularly hungry. She had an avocado stuffed with chicken salad on the specials, and finished it later at home; I had the Mongolian Beef Noodle Bowl, and found it delicious, with just enough tang to it and amply sized. The vegies braised in with the meat were crispy good The coffee I had was as you would expect from a good coffee house's daily strong brew. I shared my dessert, a scoop of ice cream covered with chocolate syrup and two shots of expresso coffee with my wife. Very good, a little pricey. We got out for about $30 including tax and a nice tip. This is within a mile from my home, and I'll be happy to give them my repeat business. With more experience of their food, I'll probably raise their stars. Since I don't have a menu to share, here is the blurb from the Rochester Post-Bulletin from when they opened with some price information: postbulletin.typepad.com… They have no website yet; here is their blog with pictures: zumbrorivercafe.blogspot… They do not want computers to be used in the restaurant, but wi-fi is free in their adjoining Dunn Bros. coffeehouse. It's going to be popular; when we left, there was only one small empty table. Strip mall; parking is in front. --------------------------------------------------------- I took my wife and two of my grown children and got out for about $50 including tip. We had a quiche that my wife liked, a good sandwich for my son, turkey medallions on the special for my daughter who is sensitive to gluten, and I had macaroni and cheese with andouille. Very creamy and tasty comfort food. Soup included for all. I tried chai tea latte and liked it a lot. On this second trip, I'm happily raising the stars to four. We'll be back.

Have you been wistfully gazing out the window on weekend mornings, crying into your cereal bowl, contemplating a move away from southeastern Minnesota? Me too (except for the crying part). Well, you needn't fret any longer because there is actually a real breakfast place in Rochester, a place that is not a low quality chain restaurant with employees in tie-dye t-shirts wearing pieces of flair, or a post-apocalyptic diner serving grease cakes. Zumbro River Cafe serves local, organic, and fresh food. They have things on the menu like omelets with andouille sausage and french toast in a sea of blueberries, dusted with powdered sugar. And the coffee is the real deal with free refills. They were willing to sub salsa for ham on an omelet. They hide yummy little mandarin orange slices on the breakfast plates. The food and service are actually 4 stars, but I bumped them up a star because this is Rochester, and we need a place like this here.

This was another place that was recommended to use while we were in town for a baseball tournament. They have a great and varied menu - I had the Teriyaki noodle bowl and it was very good. We had a group of 20 so we pretty much took over the entire place. The service was wonderful and we really enjoyed the food. The boys had their pick of breakfast or lunch and many had waffle and pancakes while others enjoyed burgers. Everyone had dessert - try the apple crisp, you won't be disappointed. Thanks Zumbro River!

Zumbro River Cafe is a little gem out of the blue. I yelped it hoping for an average meal. I was blown away by their coffee [may be from the Dunn Bros next door] and their food. Appropriately sized Minnesotan portions. Pleasantly surprised by the waitress who spoke fluent Cantonese. I will definitely come back to this welcoming cafe!

What delicious breakfast. Several months ago a friend and I stopped at Zumbro River Cafe, but it was on a Monday and closed. Today was our lucky day!!! We had checked out their schedule and were thrilled that they were open on Sundays. I had biscuits and gravy, which were as good as my grandmother used to make! My friend had quiche and thought it was amazing! Great service and great food!

My grilled cheese and tomato soup was okay. ..my daughter's andouilles sausage omelet was to die for...oh and the fruit and yogurt parfait was Phenomenal... they forgot to take it out of the Dunn Bros cup - from just next door...over all I give it the total experience a "3"

Well, I went to Zumbro Cafe with great expectations, since everybody was saying great things about them.... Let's just say that this was one of the few times I completely disagree with my fellow Yelpers. The place is cute, clean and gets a ton of sunlight. The ambiance gives Zumbro Cafe three stars. The staff is absolutely great. My cup of coffee was constantly being refilled and our waitress came to check on us several times. Staff gets 5 stars. The food was my problem. How can a breakfast place NOT poach eggs??? How is that acceptable? To me, it is not. Plus, the breakfast potatoes, which were perfectly cooked, by the way, were the most bland, tasteless thing I've ever had for breakfast. The best thing on my plate was the toast, which I could make at home. Food gets -2 stars. Probably won't go back.

Lovely little spot with wonderful food and service. Great for breakfast or a quiet lunch, with a varied menu and fresh soups and baked goods. It's pretty, too, with a "river bed" of stone running through the center of the cafe. Peaceful place with great food.
