Awesome breakfast/brunch restaurant that's attached to the Days Inn next door it was fairly close to the mayo clinic so we decided to come here. Regardless, it was SO much better than the trash they were serving us at our hotel for breakfast. Toast and Denver omelette were simply delicious not too fattening and at the same time made a hearty meal with the Greek yogurt. Our waitress refilled our drinks whenever our glasses were less than half as well. Another waitress ran out three times fresh out of the kitchen whenever someone orders pannekoeken and the best part, she was singing loudly as she ran by. Me and the lass were startled at first laughing-we wished we ordered some ourselves. Besides the friendly staff, the place looks like a large Jamba Juice franchise painted orange and green...with a lot of tables and chairs. Bathrooms are connected to the Days Inn and you'll have to go downstairs to access them.

Great breakfast, it is a must try. This place stands out in Rochester and is really unique for anywhere. I am not a pancake person but the pannekoeken is awesome. I have had the apple, blueberry and fresh strawberry versions and they all are excellent. They also have standard breakfast fare but I haven't grown tired of the pannekoeken so speak to it. Service is fast and the pot of coffee on the table works well.

3...to 3.5 stars, the big debate.... judging by the size of the line inside, I'd say that this place is more than just "ok"...but I don't know if I'd consider myself too much of a "fan" either for 4 stars. Service was friendly, fast, & efficient. Wait (for one) on a Sunday morning was only 10min. Granted it was only me and i only tried one item, but everything truly was a-ok for me. This restaurant is a family owned spot, and not connected w the chain up in the Mpls area. The logo and decor is a bit different. Yes, the servers do cheer "Pannekoeken" a bit more joyously when serving the famous dish than the Mpls spots... but i wonder how that even started. When I was in Amsterdam last month, no server ever sprinted through the restaurant yelling "pannekoeken" there. Maybe it's a weird Minnesota-Dutch thing? (Minnesota-Dutch... is there really such a thing?) Coffee was kinda bland; as to be expected in most restaurants. It's nice that they leave a little carafe on your table though. I'd probably go back when I'm in Rochester again... but it's not necessarily something that I'd crave. The actual pannekoeken itself wasn't as crunchy/chewy as others i've had... it was okay.

Ordered the dutch skillet. It was okay. Not terribly impressed with this restaurant. Typical breakfast experience. Wait staff friendly and restaurant was roomy. Good for big groups.
(3)Brady K.
This is a fantastic restaurant just walking distance from the mayo clinic. Have been here multiple times and it's been a treat every time. Fantastic food you just can't get anywhere else! If you go on Sunday morning, except a short wait as this place is always packed full for a couple hours!! Be sure to get the signature pannekoeken while you are there. Sweet and fluffy made to order. My favorite is the banana rum but you can't go wrong with any others!

"Paaaanekoooooeken" (in nasally Minnesotan accent). The best part of going here was that we could do impressions for the whole rest of the day. The service here was like an SNL skit. Lots of sarcasm and sour faces here from the waitstaff. We had the least enthusiastic waitress of the bunch so it was hard to keep a straight face as she "joyfully" sang about our pannekoeken arriving. On the other hand, the food was good. We got the seasonal pannekoeken (strawberry) which was made very well, a giant Dutch waffle and a side of sausage. Didn't get coffee because we assumed it wouldn't be the best based on other reviews. Overall, I would still go back because the food was pretty good and it was worth it for the laugh with our waitress.
(3)Jenna J.
We had the apple cinnamon pannekoeken and a skillet with steak. I'd never had a pannekoeken before but thought it was pretty tasty. Apples were nicely cooked and the flavor was good! The steak in the skillet came out well done when the request had been for medium rare, so that was disappointing. Coffee was okay, orange juice the same. We also had an apple cinnamon muffin, which I thought was mediocre, and a banana chocolate muffin which was pretty good. They have beautiful outdoor seating and we went on a nice day. All in all, it was a good (not great) breakfast and we will probably go again to try a few other things on the menu.
(3)Seth G.
It's a great place for breakfast. I haven't had lunch there. More food than we could eat and great service. Parking is a little tough but it's walking distance from the Mayo clinic. Definitely worth a stop.
(4)Jen R.
First time at panakuekin. Had the Dutch skillet. It was very good with big chucks of green peppers and mushrooms. I had the Hollenden sauce on the side, wasn't a big fan of it. Nice waitress, she kept checking on us and that the food was good
(4)Maureen O.
Good service. Pannekoeken is amazing. Great selection on menu. Seating inside and out. I would definitely come back.
(5)Kavya J.
Went for breakfast last week. Tried their dutch skillet which was amazing!! The sausage was the best part. Couldn't try their pancakes as I was in a hurry, but they look tempting. Bought a cappuccino cupcake which was heavenly! Will definitely go again. :)
(4)Steve A.
I think this is a great breakfast place and will be eating there later today, but I wanted to comment on a review left by Hannah G. I find it very pompous for someone to eat a meal then expect a discount just because they didn't get the right cheese on their order. If they put the wrong cheese on your item, then don't eat it or order something else. It's a quirky place with very good food, good-sized portions, and fantastic desserts. You really need to check it out if you are looking for a good breakfast place in downtown Rochester. Keep up the good work.

Have gone multiple times: Atmosphere: nice and quaint. We enjoyed the bright colored walls. Staff: always friendly and prompt. Food: Pannekoekens: I have had the apple cinnamon and regular cinnamon and i must say they are much better with apples. Without out the added baked in fruit the texture is very soft. Flavor is excellent however for both. Breakfast potatoes: well seasoned and nice and crisp. My wife always gets these and they're very good. Buttermilk pancakes: well made pancakes that are consistently good. Not much more to say! Coffee: variable quality occasionally too bitter Price: pannekoekens are pricey at over $9 each versus a short stack of pancakes at $4.50. Otherwise reasonably priced. Overall: Good brunch place with consistently good food, though nothing making it exceptional. We will, however, be back for good brunches!

Great location. Right down the street from Mayo. We stopped by after one of our Today-Tomorrows (what we call nights, cause our tummies can never figure out if its today or tomorrow... so we sometimes eat breakfast, lunch, dinner after work). We shared the Dutch Skillet and an Apple Pannekoeken. We enjoyed both. Can't beat eggs and hash browns. The Pannekoeken (first time I'd had one) was fun and I felt like I was eating dessert for breakfast. They actually sing with they bring it to you. Overall, it was a little pricey for what you get, but most places that serve breakfast are kinda expensive (an egg costs about 20cents). We absolutely loved the little trivia book on the table. They even had old gaming questions (remember Atari and NES?). The service was fast and extremely friendly. Our only complaint is that we can't figure out the hours. They aren't posted on the door (that we could find). We thought they were open 24-7. We ate around 7am on a weekday, but I just drove by at 5:45am on a Saturday and they were closed.
(4)Chez L.
Shared a chocolate chip muffin. (it's huge) that was delicious, as was the blueberry panekoken (however you spell it!), which is a Dutch pancake with blueberries folded in. Also got an omlette, which was fine, but if you come here for breakfast, try the dishes you can't find elsewhere. Service excellent.
(4)He And She I.
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE restaurant for breakfast in Rochester. Who can resist the waitstaff announcing "Pannekoeken...Pannekoeken" to the whole restaurant as a warm fresh plate of yummy is delivered to your table, hot from the oven and covered with fresh fruit.
(5)Carol P.
Second time eating here & Great choices with a large variety for Breakfast, served all day! Plus a Bakery of Fresh Pastries. Food is so good, chef is accommodating! First Dutch Resteraunt I've been too. The Owner came over and introduced himself, Tasos, a nice guy, He tells folks who've never tried a 'Pannekoeken' (like a Crepe which rises and baked in oven) "MUST TRY and if you don't like it, it's on me!" Can't beat that offer, as I've come here very hungry, want to relax and enjoy my Breakfast/Lunch! -- Only reason 4 Stars & not 5, is wait staff. Only one 'on the floor at 3:00PM and Host, had one thing to speak, "Is the booth fine(?)" He didn't tell me who would be my server, & when seated failed to offer me coffee or water. I waited too long, with 3-4 tables and lots of employee's standing around. Not much better last weekend, although they DO seek to please customers!! Definite return!!

This place is cute. This place is delicious. This place is definitely a standout. The service was wonderful, and they had cute little touches all over the place that you couldn't help but appreciate **House-baked goods (practically right in front of you!) **Friendly/Funny waitresses **Fast service **Cute Decor **"different" breakfast offerings **Trivia booklets sitting on the table to quiz each other while you wait for your food **When someone does order Pannekoeken, the waitress RUNS out with it and yells "PANNEKOEKEN". I did not know that before I ordered and was a little taken back when it did happen, but it was cute nonetheless! I thought it was really neat that the omelet came with a choice of toast, pancakes, OR one of their Magnificent Muffins (and trust me, the carrot cake muffin IS magnificent!!) So my mom and I split the veggie omelet (side of Carrot Cake Awesomeness), got the Cinnamon Apple Pannekoeken, and got two fresh-baked cinnamon rolls to go. Our total was $27 for all of this food, and we ended up bringing the muffin home as well for later. The Pannekoeken was awesome. It was like a delicious little breakfast dessert pizza :) The crisp cinnamon baked on the top was delicious--I loved the crunch! The omelet was good! Pretty standard, but nothing would really compare well to the awesomeness of the cinnamon pannekoeken, let's just be honest! My mom and I wanted to come back again, but we didn't have the time. Now I will be dreaming about the deliciousness...until we meet again....
(4)Kari D.
I have been eating at Pannekoeken for years and have never had bad food . The breakfast there is always AMAZING!! The muffins are fresh and melt in your mouth. The staff and management are always friendly. I love the skillets and pancakes are delicious!
(5)Marc W.
My wife and I discovered Pannekoeken while looking on the visitors bureau page last night. This place was amazing!! Apple raisin Pannekoeken did not disappoint. The potato pancakes could have been crispier but had great flavor. We will definitely be back! Atmosphere is casual and service was prompt.
(5)Courtney S.
Whenever we are in Rochester we come here, it has excellent breakfast food and service. The original "pannekoken" is a must try. They have fresh muffins daily and if you are lucky enough to be around when they are coming out of the oven, you might just get to taste some of the imperfect looking ones :).
(5)Luke R.
This is my favorite breakfast spot in Rochester. They do all of the basics very nicely, you get a pot of coffee for your table, and service is good. Their Eggs Benedict (which they call Eggs Hollandaise) are great. I would guess that they make the sauce from scratch. It has good flavor and doesn't separate. Hashbrowns are cooked properly, though I prefer to ask for them crispy, which is beautifully executed, not overdone. Their coffee, muffins, and pancakes are all good, but not exceptional.
(4)Karlos W.
This is "Minnesota nice" restaurant style. Excellent food quality, a warm casual atmosphere, and exceptionally friendly and efficien service.
(5)Cindy J.
Nice people serving good, hearty food. Order the pannekoeken just to see the staff run it out calling "pannekoeken"! I had rum raisin, and it was scrumptious.
(3)Gail W.
We had breakfast at Pannekoeken last Thursday morning (5/7) -- just had to give it a try after reading the reviews. SO glad we did! They weren't very busy and we were seated promptly (after walking by a bakery case being filled with large muffins fresh out of the oven...divine fragrance!!). I ordered the Seasonal Pannekoeken with strawberries and my husband ordered one of the omelets. My Pannekoeken arrived quickly -- really quickly (the waitress runs to deliver it to the table singing Pannekoeken, Pannekoeken, Pannekoeken) -- fun, fun, fun. It was served with sour cream, brown sugar, and warm syrup. DELISH!! The omelet arrived cooked perfectly. Not a scorch or browned spot to be seen! It was filled with sausage, onions, and peppers. The menu says cheese, but he can't have cheese, but I'm sure it would have been even more delicious with cheese! The food was perfect and the service excellent. We'll go again the next time we're in town. If you aren't used to numbered streets and avenues with NE, NW, SE, SW, be sure to use your GPS carefully and double check to be sure you've selected Avenue or Street correctly. It took us a while to find the restaurant and then it was only after I called for directions (they are in the downtown Days Inn). If you park on the street, be sure you put enough money in the meter! The two cars beside us had just gotten tickets when we got back to our car after our delicious breakfast.
(4)Nicole B.
The food is rather bland, with nothing very special or notable. I got a veggie omelet, which lacked significant flavor. However... any restaurant where the waitresses have to yell, "Pannekoeken!"as they run through the busy room carrying your fluffy pancake is pretty alright by me.
(3)Chip B.
I have allergies to grain and dairy and they were very accommodating. My husband is also allergic to gluten. For breakfast we had one let's and it was delicious!
(5)Hannah G.
Ordered the breakfast burger with cheddar, came with the wrong cheese on it and when I pointed this out to the manager when paying she rolled her eyes and said, "fine give her 10% off." And never apologized. Also, fries were an extra $2 for a side which I was not informed of. So many better places to eat, especially downtown. There was a reason why it was dead.
(2)Megan M.
A must try in Rochester. Try the Dutch skillet (not on the menu but it's amazing). Portions are plentiful. You won't go home hungry. Make sure to get the muffin. You can even get it to go and enjoy it later. Also, if you order a mimosa be prepared for the carafe they bring you. All in all, a great breakfast spot.
(5)Sergio G.
A must for breakfast, I'm not too sure on their dinner tho. I had the Dutch skillet, it's a festival in your mouth. Order one mimosa and they bring you a full carafe. Their portions are plentiful, this will be a favorite spot for me and my love. The service is fast, I went on a Sunday and it was not busy, however downtown Rochester on this day was dead.
(4)Jen J.
Went there for dinner on a Saturday night, very few people there. Saw many more people when we walked past during brunch hours earlier that day. Food was nothing extraordinary, but a nice little place. Service was good.
(3)Amanda W.
Very greasy and typical diner food. I've heard their Pannekoekens are good, but my sandwich was not.
(2)Holly J.
I went there for an early dinner - had the pea soup and an apple pennekoeken. The pancake was nice - different than the ones in the Netherlands in that it was baked, and the batter was different - but still, quite yummy. The pea soup - fantastic!! Worthy of all of the various pea soups I've had in the Netherlands. I's the type with a few other veggies as well as the peas, but the usual sausage. mmmmm. Next time I'm up at Mayo (5 weeks) I'm going there for the pea soup more often... yup.
(4)Greg P.
Great breakfast menu. Loved the apple pannekoeken and Omlets. Nice variety. Muffins and skillets looked good also.
(4)S Z.
Yum-o! This place is a great no frills brunch and breakfast place. The pannekoeken is a fun, different option to your typical pancake or waffle fare. I like that they give you a full pitcher of coffee and water so you don't constantly have to bother the waitresses. Good food and prompt service. I would recommend.
(4)Regina F.
The raisins in my oatmeal tasted weird and were a bit bloated, but other than that my breakfast was fine. I probably should have ordered the Pannekoeken, but I was trying to be good and healthy. On the really super plus side, the hashbrowns were every midwesterner's dream. Shredded potatoes perfectly browned, slightly burnt and very crisp on either side, these were the perfect conduit for deliciously runny eggs.
(3)Jeff C.
Good food and great service. During a recent trip to visit the Mayo Clinic, I ate there 3 times in a week!!
(5)Soly Z.
Coffee is fine- nothing crazy good. The atmosphere is floral wall papered, Dutch granny chic. I tend to order whatever each restaurant is known for, so I went with the apple pannekoeken. While my server was pleasant, she lacked the zeal & volume I was expecting when she delivered my "Paaaaaaaaanekoeken". She did, however dash out to my table with the cinnamon & sugar dusted treat, thus redeeming herself slightly. The food wasn't bad. I'm from southern Cali, and the pannekoeken is reminiscent of The apple pancake Original Pancake House. OPH does it way better, but for being out in the boondocks, this wasn't bad. They had GIANT muffins In the bakery case & I bought a couple for the long day's drive ahead. OHHHHH MODED! I just saw another waitress bellow "Paaaaaaaaanekoeken" while skipping AND Smiling. My server just earned herself an "F". Epic fail.
(3)Mike S.
I walked in for a quick bite to-go slightly after lunchtime during the week. I asked the server at the counter what soups the restaurant served. She couldn't tell me if they even served soup so she asked another girl who told me the soup menu for the day. I then asked if the chicken salad contained onions. Again, the girl at the counter did not know, so she asked another girl who said that it did not contain onions but contained peppers. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and waited a few minutes before being handed my bag by a gentleman who had some of the dirtiest fingernails I have seen in a long time. I left and when I went to eat my sandwich later, I found that it contained onions mixed into the chicken salad (and no peppers). I threw the sandwich in the garbage. I can't comment on the taste of the food, but I can say the staff is way below par. Because of their incompetence, I found myself $10 poorer and not an ounce fuller.
(1)Lindsay B.
Yummy pannekoeken with fresh strawberries! With the brown sugar/sour cream mixture (go with it) it was even better. Coffee good definitely be improved upon though. Excited to to try their breakfast another day. Nice little place. Our waitress was the cutest little thing. She brought the pannekoeken to our table with kind of singing "Pannekoeken...pannekoeken...pannekoeken!", lol. Cute, and it was worthy of her little song. ****Had to come back to update. Yesterday when we were there we both commented on how two of the employees at the counter weren't exactly friendly as we were leaving. I would say that they were eager to get back to what they were working on and were done with us, lol. When we went back for breakfast this morning. Walked in and weren't greeted at all. There were four people behind the counter: two were preoccupied, one was doing something at the register, but one lady looked up and didn't so much as smile at us. We stood there feeling shmuckey until the lady doing something at the cash register got the attention of another employee and asked her to seat us. Super awesome way to welcome paying customers to your restaurant! And it gets better! We sat at the table for a good five minutes and no one came over to us, lol. Sorry, but come on! Way to lose customers! And ya did! Because we left. To be fair, the girl who sat us was friendly. No, we don't expect the red carpet to be rolled out, but they could definitely take a lesson on how to be more friendly and welcoming to customers. Torn on how to rate it star-wise. Was five stars before....
(2)Jacy R.
Been staying at a nearby hotel and have eaten here multiple times. The muffins are fantastic, made fresh daily. I have yet to find something on the menu that hasn't tasted great.
(5)Sarah G.
The pannekoeken was delicious we had the fresh strawberry, I had a disappointing omelette with steamed veggies (i ordered egg whites & it was borderline inedible and not really cooked) but I am willing to forgive it as a one off as everything else was great! Kids loved it! & yes the bathroom situation in the dungeons of the adjacent days inn was kind of odd!!
(4)Don B.
Came in for early lunch. Service good very friendly. I had dinner Pannekoeken with mashed potatoes on it. Very good. Spouse had chickensalad sandwich. Big but nothing special. Will come back later this week to try other items on menu.
(4)Phil A.
Stopped in for breakfast ordered a ham omelette got a bacon one with no cheese. It was dry. The place looks like floor hasn't been cleaned in years. It was like a sauna no a/c or not working. Won't go to again. The one + wait staff was very friendly.
(2)Keir J.
I am a grown man, and few things make me happier than hearing a waitress at pannekoeken announce the arrival of my dinner. The fruit flavored ones are nice for the kids, but adults will enjoy the variety of meat and vegatable options. My favorite is the Rotterdam.
(5)Melanie B.
Went there for lunch and the panekochken--would not return or recommend! I had the split pea soup-more like a paste. Salad was edible but not great-and no "regular" Italian dressing option. Other person ordered the panekochken and it was very "eggy" not like a pancake. Atmosphere was worse than a Denny's. would not recommend!
(1)Marla B.
I can't get enough of the Garden Omelets with the Dutch Gouda.... they are soooo gouda! seriously, I really want to try a Pannekoeken and have someone come running out of the kitchen with it, but I just know I'll be disappointed if I leave without having a Dutch Garden Omelet. So glad I found you- I will be back many times! The service is outstanding too by the way!
(5)Rachel S.
Oh, Pannekoeken, I am so undecided about you. On one hand, your namesake pancakes ARE delicious. On the other, $9.00 for one salad-plate-sized pancake and no sides? My friends and I agree that the pancakes seem to have gotten smaller over the years. Perhaps we have just gotten bigger. Either way, they are definitely more expensive. The savory breakfast dishes (omelets, skillets) are typically fine but underwhelming. At least those come with a side, like a yummy muffin. Given the lack of decent (or any) breakfast places in Rochester and the fact that it's NOT a chain, I guess it can be bumped up to 3 stars. But there is room for improvement. PS I'm going to second the this-must-be-a-'Minnesota-Dutch'-thing because when I ordered a pannekoeken in Amsterdam I just got a lousy crepe. Other places in the US call them Dutch babies.
(3)Jack S.
Poor at its best. Started with a dirty cup of coffee. Lipstick to be exact. Waitress was insulted when i asked for a new cup. Waitress was giving me rude stares while i ordered. When she brought my meal the first streak they called it-"sirloin"- was so well done i couldn't chew it. The owner of the restaurant brought the steak and eggs back after we explained we ordered medium rare. When the new steak came it was brown on the outside and mooing on the inside. They tossed the new piece of flesh on top of the original ice cold eggs I was served! They couldn't even fry up a new couple eggs and the icy hash browns were at the bottom of the fleshy raw mound. Bad, bad, bad and rude waiter and clueless owner who is better suited to be Al Bundy's shoe salesman partner than the owner of an eatery. Sirloin steak? Give me a break! That stuff you call steak is from the shoe store! Stop taking advantage of the endless lines of mayo clinic patients with this crap fodder!
(1)Gina C.
I was stunned to see how many negative reviews this place got... Sure, it is a bit "spendy", but it pretty solid in meeting the basic requirements for a tasty quick breakfast/brunch. Rochester doesn't have much selection! Every time I have visited, I have enjoyed the breakfast options. My bf usually gets the bacon cheese omelet plus a deluxe muffin. I have tried the pannekoekens and potato cakes - all appetizing. I would recommend the apple cinnamon muffin. I never ordered it before... But I did end up eating half of the one my bf ordered?!
(4)Amritha K.
Loved this place! I ordered the fresh strawberries pannekoeken and the warm apple cider for breakfast and absolutely enjoyed it. The waiting staff run yelling 'Pannekoeken! Pannekoeken!' to your table when your order of pannekoeken is ready - kind of quirky, but cute! Everyone was super friendly - your typical Minnesotan hospitality.
(4)Steve N.
If you want a great breakfast stop in and have an Apple Pannekoeken. Never tried one before today, but I can happily report I will be back. Waitress runs the stuffed pancaske to your table to prevent it from falling while singing a short "pannekoeken tune". Crust was crispy, apples tart. A perfect breakfast pancake like no other. Bright and cheery inside. Very close to Mayo Clinic right downtown. Highly recommended for breakfast! Update: Came back for another pannekoeken this morning. Recommend the filled pannekoeken only. Tried the traditional with no filling not near as tasty.
(4)Monique H.
Was in Rochester for the night visiting a friend at Mayo and we decided to breakfast at Pannekoeken. What a great surprise when the waitresses ran out singing the name of the delicious dish as they delivered it to the table. Made me smile! I went with the traditional bacon, eggs, and hashbrown skillet. Tasty stuff, pretty standard breakfast. I also had the Cranberry Orange muffin which was delicious. The creamy orange frosting on top was tart and perfect. Lastly, my friend and I split the Strawberry Pannekoeken. Topped with fresh strawberries, sour cream, and brown sugar it was fantastic! Overloaded on the carbs that day, but it was so worth it. Loved how when the brown sugar melted it turned all syrupy. Will be making another visit to this restaurant down the road.
(4)Christian M.
Fantastic breakfast and lunch spot, walking distance to the Mayo Clinic!
(5)Roland K.
I been to this same restaurant in the Twin Cities. Over all the ones up there was better. In Rochester the food and service was a little above average.
(3)Billy N.
The pannekoekens are great with ice cream but very filling. Dutch pea soup is also a favorite.
(5)Dee F.
The place was tired. Decor was due for an update and the staff was "tired" of the gimmicky "panna-kooo-ken" announcements. The dishware was chipped. They provide a carafe for coffee but I had to wonder why you would seat the two tables next to the bus stand when the entire restaurant only had 3 other tables occupied. The food was ok, the apple pannekoeken was delivered in a puffed state. It didn't need the "maple" syrup provided on the side but was missing the flavored sour cream topping described on the menu.
(2)Jennifer B.
Let me start by saying this diner has been closed for a number of months, due to a fire. They have now reopened and with great experiences prior to the fire, we were excited to see the new decor and enjoy another meal during our current visit to Rochester. Boy were we disappointed! When we arrived, we were seated and immediately brought glasses of water. The water must have been from the sink, because it had a rusty taste to it. Our lovely waitress then came and asked us for our drink orders. Coffee and hot chocolate please! I will say my hot chocolate was fairly good. But the coffee was luke-warm and tasted terrible. (Probably because it is also prepared with rusty sink water.) Upon adding cream to the coffee, we quickly realized we had no silverware. We waited a number of minutes before the waitress returned to take our orders, and we reminded her of our lack of spoons, forks, and the like. She took our orders (denver skillet with pancakes and an 8oz serloin with baked potato and broccoli) and returned with our silverware and napkins. While waiting for our food, the manager stopped by our table and asked how I had wanted my skillet prepared. She said the cook had done it wrong and the eggs, ham, peppers and hashbrowns had all been cooked together. I told her that was how I expected it, and that was fine with me. So she left and told the cook it was ok. When our food arrived, we were hungry and excited! My skillet looked great and my mom's plate looked delicious as well. That was, until we cut into them. IF we could cut into them. My mom's steak was, in fact, NOT a serloin cut. It came to her hard and dry. She had ordered Med-Rare. This was beyond well done. The steak was like leather... impossible to but, and there was not a speck of pink, red, or a drop of juice. To top it off, her broccoli was cooked to mush, and her baked potato was brown on the inside. As for my skillet.... Although it was prepared the way I had wanted it, it would have been better if they finished preparing it before serving it. My scrambled eggs we still runny and raw in the middle. and my hashbrowns were dry and burnt. Even my pancakes were undercooked and still a bit soggy in the middle. We both attempted a few bites of our meals, until we were entirely disgusted. We complained to our waitress who was apologetic, but not willing to offer us any kind refund. She recommended we speak to the manager on our way out, however. So, we took our check to pay and spoke with the manager who was only willing to remove one of our meals off the bill, and who offered us each a free muffin to take home. Unfortunately, a muffin doesn't satisfy a steak and baked potato or a Denver egg scramble craving... So, we took home one free pumpkin muffin and paid for half of our bill. Before leaving, we asked the manager if the cook their was new, because we've had good experiences there, prior to their fire and remodel. She informed us this cook was new and had only been there since they reopened 2 months ago. I will say, my pumpkin muffin was good this morning with my starbucks chai tea. But we do not plan to visit the Pannekoeken again.

Staying in Rochester for a wedding weekend, my wife and I were looking for some local breakfast foodstuffs. Pannekoeken was right across the street from our hotel, so we decided to give it a shot. As recommended by the other posts, if you haven't had a pannekoeken before, give it a try(this was my first). It's definitely worth it. The pannekoeken can be described as an over-egged pancake or an over-battered omelet. It's a happy mix of typically segregated breakfast bedfellows. It is filled with your choice of fruit (apple is traditional, but strawberry and seasonal fruits are also available- lingonberry was seasonal fruit when we stopped in). Other more savory options are also available include chocolate as well as bacon. I opted for the apple filling, but calling it "filling" really isn't an accurate depiction. This wasn't your typical hostess pie filling. The "filling" was comprised of fresh slices of shaved apple caramelized and lightly dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Very tasty, but not overpowering. The most striking feature of the pannekoeken was perhaps the temperature. It came out of the kitchen to the joyous sound of the waitress proclaiming "pannekoeken.... pannekoeken!" Sitting on the plate in front of me, it looked pretty harmless, but sitting inside the pocket of egg and batter was a thermodynamic phenomenon. The first bite scorched my mouth. Having not learned my lesson, the second bite scorched the parts of my mouth that somehow made it through the first hazing. Needless to say, I had to let it cool for a few minutes before trying to tackle it again. Besides the pannekoeken, the rest of the menu looked like pretty typical cafe fare. The coffee was marginal, but overall the service and the experience were good.

Good breakfast, even after they spilled hot coffee on my leg (Youch!). Decent usual Midwestern food sprinkled with some selections from, I guess, Holland, even though having been to Holland I never saw any breakfast like this, there. Let me just say this: I'm almost of the opinion that the smell of the pancakes at this place is just short of orgasmic. Okay coffee. Also, it's hot. The trip down to the bathroom in the basement is interesting. Old people or those with hip injuries may want to take the elevator.

What a disappointment! We visit Rochester several times s year, and have always made this restaurant a "must visit". It's now off our list. Were turned off immediately with their new redecoration. Read in another review that they had a fire. Sad, but they should have made an effort to bring back some of the old charm. The new two color scheme offered the ambiance of a third rate cafeteria. But on to the important stuff ... The food! One order was for an omelet which was to be loaded with gouda cheese, met wurst, potatoes, mushrooms, etc, then covered with hollandaise sauce. The missing sauce was rectified by the server, but the paper- thin omellet's filling left MUCH to be desired. Greasy and fairly tasteless, it was a huge disappointment. Was there really any Gouda added????? Likewise, the veggie stir fry was a let down . Mundane with a lousy sauce. Yuck! But the most surprising thing of all was the split pea soup. Watery and WAY too salty, was a real mess. That had been a highlight in visits past. Usually eat there several times during each Rochester visit. So bad that we won't return.

Fun place, pretty good food for family style. The staff is very entertaining. This is a great place for breakfast or brunch, I can guarantee you won't leave hungry.

I was first here in February 2010 when I was a patient having tests done at Mayo Clinic and looking for some warm comfort breakfast food before my 5 hour long drive back home. I was back at Mayo Clinic my second time the end of August and then my third time the 1st week of September 2010. I found this to a great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Makes me wish there was a similar Dutch place in Elgin, IL so that I could enjoy it regularly. Loved it when the wait staff goes running through the restaurant yelling "panna-koe ken" while serving me an apple one and then next time a bacon one. This is not like any old flat pancake I have had many times before. This was puffy and filled with carmelized apple slices and then topped of with cinnamon and some powdered sugar. It was very gooey and not too sweet. Wonderful PIC. upload.wikimedia.org/wik… The bacon one was just the right texture and the right mix of savory with the batter. My third meal was amazing chicken salad sanwich. The menu has pasta salad, pancakes, pannekoeken, pork roast, waffles, roasted chicken, wraps, burgers, buttermilk pancakes, salad bar, omelets, deli sandwich's. You MUST have the Pannekoeken--not just because it is really good, but because they bring it out to you and sing! I have never had food this wonderful. I love the authentic Dutch cooking and the pannekoekens are outta this world. Please pay them a visit, order their special, get the salad bar and be sure to get their pasta salad.

A great place for breakfast. Makes me wish there was a similar Dutch place in Houston so that I could enjoy it regularly. Loved it when the wait staff goes running through the restaurant yelling "panna-koe ken" while serving one to the customer. Keeps things interesting.

Fine traditional mid-western fare. Good service and great prices. Quality pot roast dinner for dad, reasonable salad for the wife, and the pork chops were pretty good.

Pan-na-co-kin? Pan-eh-coe-ih-kin? Panna-coo-kin? I'm pretty sure it's pronounced "panna-coo-kin," or at least that's how I heard the waitstaff pronounce it in their repeated "clear-the-way" chants as they hurriedly rushed from the kitchen with fluffy bowl-shaped pancakes, desperately trying to get pannekoekens to their patrons' tables before the oven-fresh Dutch pancakes "fell". I think mine had fallen by the time it got to the table, but does it really matter? I got the apple pannekoeken--the "traditional" as I was told. It's definitely something different, and it's a welcome departure from the blandness of standard "American" pancakes. I also stole some of the mixed fruit pannekoeken off of my neighbor's plate. The apple one had the apples baked into it, whereas the mixed fruit one seemed to just be a "plain" pannekoeken topped with fruit. Having the fruit "baked-in" is more fun, in my opinion. They serve it with warm syrup on the side and another topping that you mix together yourself. I want to say that it's cream cheese (or is it sour cream?) and cinnamon. It was a nice touch, although the pannekoeken was good even without it. So what *exactly* makes a pannekoeken so different from your standard-fare pancake? Well, I'd say the batter doesn't taste much different from standard pancake batter, but it's fluffier. I'd compare the fluffiness of the pannekoeken to that of a Belgian waffle. (Yeah, pannekoeken is Dutch or something.) So, the fluffiness and the fruit that it's served with seem to make a pannekoeken distinct. Pannekoekens are plate-sized (someone has posted a picture here on Yelp) and will run you about $8--standard-fare for pancakes around here. If you want to add coffee or any of the other "standard" breakfast fixings (eggs, hash browns), that'll be extra. The coffee was good but nothing special (some other reviewers really raved about it--I don't see what the big fuss is about), and the hash browns & eggs tasted just as you'd expect. I should mention that they have other "traditional" American fixings (burgers and such) but are you really going to go to a place called Pannekoeken and order a burger? We sat inside, but the seating on the sidewalk would be great for people-watching. It's also large enough inside that it would not be a bad place for groups. It's definitely got a unique flair to it, with the water served in Mason jars and hard-to-pronounce name that every visitor of Rochester seems to be curious about ("Have you been to Pannekoeken?"). Annah W. sums it up best in her review: "Pannekoeken won't knock your socks off, but I think that's part of the appeal." **Update** Came back and had a muffin. Pretty wide selection of unique flavors that I don't think you'd find anywhere else. I had some of the carrot rasin, blueberry, and raspberry caramel pecan muffins (we all got one) and they were good. It'd be a stretch, though, for me to say they're the best I'd ever had.

Food was yummy. Cheery waitstaff. Best breakfast in Rochester!

So, I tried a crepe from them during Thursdays at 1st and 3rd. I was impressed! They used real, fresh fruit which I loved! I have not been to their restaurant yet so I don't have much more to add just yet, but I will be sure to add more details and revise my star rating should they deserve 5! :-) I really miss my Kansas City creperie so I hope that they offer savory crepes as well! There is no menu available online so I suppose only time will tell. :-/ I really do not want to have to drive all the way to the Twin Cities just for my crepes. :-( Wish me luck!

The pannekoekens are great with ice cream but very filling. Dutch pea soup is also a favorite.

I's the type with a few other veggies as well as the peas, but the usual sausage. mmmmm. Next time I'm up at Mayo (5 weeks) I'm going there for the pea soup more often... yup.
(4)Christian M.
Fantastic breakfast and lunch spot, walking distance to the Mayo Clinic!
(5)Roland K.
I been to this same restaurant in the Twin Cities. Over all the ones up there was better. In Rochester the food and service was a little above average.

(3)Cindy J.
Nice people serving good, hearty food. Order the pannekoeken just to see the staff run it out calling "pannekoeken"! I had rum raisin, and it was scrumptious.

Ordered the dutch skillet. It was okay. Not terribly impressed with this restaurant. Typical breakfast experience. Wait staff friendly and restaurant was roomy. Good for big groups.
(3)Nicole B.
The food is rather bland, with nothing very special or notable. I got a veggie omelet, which lacked significant flavor. However... any restaurant where the waitresses have to yell, "Pannekoeken!"as they run through the busy room carrying your fluffy pancake is pretty alright by me.

(5)Steve A.

(5)Brady K.

I have been eating at Pannekoeken for years and have never had bad food . The breakfast there is always AMAZING!! The muffins are fresh and melt in your mouth. The staff and management are always friendly. I love the skillets and pancakes are delicious!

(5)Greg P.

(1)Rachel S.

It's a great place for breakfast. I haven't had lunch there. More food than we could eat and great service. Parking is a little tough but it's walking distance from the Mayo clinic. Definitely worth a stop.

First time at panakuekin. Had the Dutch skillet. It was very good with big chucks of green peppers and mushrooms. I had the Hollenden sauce on the side, wasn't a big fan of it. Nice waitress, she kept checking on us and that the food was good

Good service. Pannekoeken is amazing. Great selection on menu. Seating inside and out. I would definitely come back.

Went for breakfast last week. Tried their dutch skillet which was amazing!! The sausage was the best part. Couldn't try their pancakes as I was in a hurry, but they look tempting. Bought a cappuccino cupcake which was heavenly! Will definitely go again. :)

(5)Jessica A.

Been staying at a nearby hotel and have eaten here multiple times. The muffins are fantastic, made fresh daily. I have yet to find something on the menu that hasn't tasted great.
(5)Jen J.
Epic fail.
(3)Sarah G.
(5)Marla B.
