Wow, this place really surprised me. Very tiny, mostly take out - but we ate inside. The food was really good. The eggroll was about as good as I have had anywhere. This is definitely worth the trip. I live in the area and have never been here so it's good to find a gem like this so close to home.

A little hole in the wall. Tiny, tiny, petite little place. HOT HOT HOT with no air conditioning. Anyway all of this is inappropriate and irrelevant. Let's cut the chase, Pho is great!! Lots and lots of meat, slices of beef and meatballs, fresh bean sprouts and basil. EGGROLLS HERE ARE HUGE!! a must have!! the size of a burito, deep fried good and tasty, flavorful!! Bun Bo hue (boon bo whey) - eyhh... it's a so-so kind of thing here. I've had better.

Very disappointed! A sign on the door says they are closed for vacation until August 1, 2014. So closed for six weeks.

It's a little hole in the wall but ambiance is not important to me. My spring rolls did not have fresh herbs only shrimp, pork, rice noodles, and lots of ice berg lettuce. Spring rolls don't taste the same without mint and basil leaves. I wonder if they'd put herbs in them in the future if I request it. The Bun Bo Hue broth was flavorful, savory. I forgot to throw in the bean sprouts and fresh herbs initially because I was enjoying the broth so much. The tendony beef was tender to my relief. Often places make them too chewy. I was surprised at the small amount of noodles they put in. Only about 3-4 mouthfuls worth. They used a generous amount of meat though. I'll be back to try more items when I'm in the area. I drank a lot of the tasty Bun Bo Hue broth not knowing if I'd get MSG face. I am happy to report-no MS face! That tells me they are not over doing it with MSG and instead enlisting other ingredients too to achieve that savory taste. Update: I went there again and ordered Bun Rieu this time. Everyone makes it a little differently but it's often a tomato based soup with crab, pork, and egg clusters and sliced pork loaf, fried tofu and sometimes with pork blood. This item was a disappointment here. Rather than a true tomato based broth which is what I believe they were trying to simulate, the broth seemed to be dyed red with something. The broth was a little sugary rather than savory. The cluster was made with egg and bits of shrimp but had no flavor. I feel the quality was not good enough to make it on the menu. I think restaurants should be picky about what they include on the menu because if that's the only thing someone orders, you have hat representing your restaurant! As much as I would like to root for smaller, family-owned restaurants, it's important for me to be a credible source so I had to change my overall rating based on this second experience.

My husband found this place on yelp in his quest to find good pho. We are from out of town and this was our first time here. Upon arrival the restaurant didn't look promising from the outside as it is in a strip mall and has a tiny store front. When we walked in we were greeted by the kind owners and took a seat at one of the four tables in the establishment. We had our 4 year old and 18 month old and they both sat well on the stools. We ordered the beef pho and chicken vermicelli salad with a side of Vietnamese spring rolls. Our server brought the kids complementary toy cars which was unexpected and much appreciated! Our food came quickly and we gobbled it up. I was so full but extremely satisfied. I can definitely see why this is a popular place and I would have to say that everything about it was a wonderful experience. I have never been in such a clean Vietnamese restaurant with such kind workers. Even though our kids made a huge noodle mess on the floor they were gracious and accommodating! Would highly recommend!

This is place falls in the category of hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They literally have four tables of seating in the entire place. Some people would say that makes it more intimate. I personally feel a little weird having the owners within arms reach of every customer..... The parking lot is a bit small, it's located in a strip center with about four other businesses and there is only one row of parking for everyone. The few times I've visited, there's been a few openings, so I guess I was lucky. The list of food items is pretty limited, but the prices are very reasonable. I stuck with the traditional bowl of Pho with sliced beef and noodles in beef broth. I'd say the noodles were average. I'm just glad there's a place near my office for me to grab a fresh bowl of Pho! Asian noodles will always have a soft spot in my heart.... mostly because I'm Chinese and grew up with it as my comfort food.

Pho had chunks o'meat in it, not your typical thin sliced rare beef. Broth was average. Vegetable plate had one sliced jalapeño on it. Egg roll was good but almost too big. "Dining room" (if you can actually call it that) is about 12 x 12 and has 4 stainless steel tables with metal stools. Very uncomfortable height and size for your average sized Minnesotan I think. If you are on the tall or hefty side its going to be uncomfortable. Overall its not bad, its just not good enough to go back or recommend to anybody. Drive 7 minutes north and go to Quangs or Pho 79 instead.

This little cramped "hole in the wall" was tough to find but worth the search. Good spring rolls and Great Chicken Pho. Just ask what everything is before putting together your bowl of pho. I thought I was adding hoison sauce but it was a bottle of squid sauce...crisis averted but it could of been a different story. Find this place.

We went here on a weeknight. The place wasn't too packed. The Pho was good. Portions could be a little bigger. The broth was better than most places but definitely not the best I've had. There is lots of parking but very little seating indoors. There is some seating outside. Service was quick, food came quick. Indoor seating is a little cramped. We were the only ones inside and it felt cramped ( i think this place is mainly for take out). I couldn't imagine how it'd feel if the other 2 tables were being used. Overall good experience. I would definetly eat here again.

My pho tour in the twin cities next stop: Cadao Express. Stop number #4 The restaurant has a vibe of a Taiwan night market. This is your mom and pop shop/hole in the wall. The restaurant has 4 metal tables and metal stools. Max capacity maybe 20 people. I got my 3 items I've been getting at every stop. Beef slice pho, spring rolls, coffee. The pho was excellent. Great flavor, and the beef really hit the spot. They used steak sirloin and it was cut perfect to my liking. The noodles were cooked just right. The spring rolls were a good size. It had two slices of bbq pork and 3 half of shrimp. The sauce for it was ok. Coffee was very disappointing. It came pre mixed. It's not your typical drip Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. The price was .50-1.00 more per dish than the previous 3 locations I had visited I would have given it five stars if the coffee was on point. Will definitely make this my new home place to visit when I'm looking for pho. Downside they are not open on Sunday.

Man, I really wanted to love this place. It has everything I usually like: limited seating in a small cramped space, terrible Vietnamese satellite television advertising various vitamin supplements, and OG Viets in the kitchen cooking up a storm. Rollin' with my lady, we ordered the Cafe Sua Da (Vietnamese Coffee), Goi Cuon (Spring Rolls) and the Pho Dac Biet (House Special Beef Noodle Soup). Goi Cuon - Expensive (about 50 cents to a dollar more than other places) but well worth the money. They were large, stuffed with shrimp, pork, noodles, and herbs and came with a delicious peanut sauce. This was probably the best part of the meal. Cafe Sua Da - A bit disappointing. The coffee was too watered down. It failed to have the signature strong coffee kick which is essential for Vietnamese coffee. Pho Dac Biet - While the broth, slices of sirloin, meatballs, tripe, and tendon were fine, the noodles were too chewy. As a person that makes pho, this means that the noodles are old or frozen. Worst part of my meal. Disregarding the price, I don't think I would go out of my way to return, unless I try the other soups that they have (e.g. Bun Rieu aka Crab and tomato soup). When compared to other restaurants in the Twin Cities though, it's about average.

The atmosphere of Cadao reminds me a little bit of being back in Asia with the Vietnamese tv channel playing in the background and the way seating is somewhat compact. However, don't let the small seating area steer you away.. you can't judge a book by its cover until you've tried it. The Beef Pho and Vietnamese Spring Rolls were authentically amazing and the owner is really kind. I was pleasantly surprised with how efficient their serving was and would definitely recommend this place to my fellow Pho-loving friends or people who'd be interested in trying it.

Visiting from out of town. This place was near the hotel. Small hole in the wall but so clean. Had pho. It was so good and a huge portion. Nice service too.

Just a quick update. This place is still excellent, and I wanted to add that I *think* I've determined their beef pho and spring rolls are gluten-free. Both are made in-house from scratch. I had a long talk with the owner, and while his English is not perfect I felt like he understood what I was asking and was honest with me--for which he earns an extra star. (For example, he knew to tell me to not add the hoisin that the pho comes with, and to avoid the peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls.) I eat here maybe once a month (more if I'm sick) and my TTG-IGA bloodwork has been normal.

I live really close to this little joint and it is the best take out in the area. I've had the pho, fried rice, egg rolls, wontons, and I've never been disappointed. The helpings are generous and the prices reasonable. I usually choose to take out as the dining area leaves a little to be desired. But the staff is always great.

Went for lunch today. Parking was tight, but we found a space close and went in. This is a really small place. There are five small metal tables, with matching tiny metal stools. Both were really cold on the butt and elbows and kind of reminded me of a cross between a kindergarten room and a jail processing area. The gent waiting on us was in hover mode from the second we sat down. No less than three times he said"you want noodle soup?" We ordered two bowls of pho, the #11 and the special, plus an order of egg rolls. Everything came out fast. The pho broth was tasty and the accompanying basil and sprouts were fresh. I felt they were a little chintzy on the noodles, but all in all very good.

Finally I am in the area at the right time of day to check out Cadao Express. Yes, the place is small, maybe seating less than 20. Yes, the parking lot is flat out dangerous, especially if you wind up parked next to a behemouth truck or SUV and have to back out blind. Yes, the food is good. I got an order of egg rolls and a rice noodle salad (bun) to go. Others have commented that the egg rolls are huge but they are not the biggest in town. The biggest I have seen have been at Wok in the Park and its seen better days neighbor Thanh Do. The rolls were good though with plenty of ground pork and seasoning that actually gave them a nice flavor on their own. The dipping sauce was the traditional variation on seasoned fish sauce with some pepper flakes. The salad seemed a bit short on the veggie components but the shrimp and onions had been caramelized on a flat top, some of the onions were a bit too caramelized for my taste but the shrimp were perfect. They had even gotten a slight smoky taste from their time on the grill with the onions. Service was quick and friendly and I would definitely return again if I am in the area at meal time.

Pho for sure. Even our 8 month old loves the pho here. We tend to bring this home on our way home from work, but don't be afraid to eat in, either! All I can comment on is the pho, but that's really all I'd want to comment on anyway!

Deliciously savory food brought from the kitchen to your table in seconds, granted that there are only four tables (with one outside) and the kitchen is larger than the dining area. This place is small and there are only two tables that can seat 4 people so do not bring a party of 5 and expect to get a good seat. There were more take out orders than dine in, which makes a lot of sense. Seeing the reviews, we had to try as many dishes as possible. The pork fried rice was loaded with pork and veggies. This was one of the rare instances where there was more stuff than rice versus having to pick through the rice to find something. They even asked if we wanted to put veggies or bean sprouts inside because they know kids generally don't like vegetables so we ordered ours with veggies and without sprouts. The special pho was good as any decent self respecting Vietnamese restaurant should be. The bun bo xao sa's lemongrass beef was tender, savory, marinated in a flavored goodness that was perfectly cooked. Overly marinated meat tends to become candied and almost jerky like as the sugar displaces the water inside the meat leaving it dry, tough and/or chewy. There is a fine science or art of getting the right amount of marinade, flavor and tenderness and the cooks here hit that harmonious point perfectly.

way too expensive. will go anywhere else. $16.00 for egg rolls (too big) and Pho... way to thick of beef pieces. Could be so much better... one person $16.00 lunch and that's not including the tip. Usually Vietnamese places are affordable, satisfying, and perfect. Lots of other Vietnamese places that have much better food, more tasty and easier on the wallet. Shame...

We ate at this tiny place. Very friendly, and quick service. Had the pho, spring rolls, and the bun Bo hue. The spring rolls were fresh and good. The pho and bun bo hue were on the sweet side but had good flavor. Will eat here again.

I absolutely love this place! It's tiny so don't expect anything fancy! But if you want a good place to go to that feels like mommas homecooking.. This is the place! Their spring rolls were huge! And it didn't taste like it has been sitting for awhile. I had their bun rieu it's great! I would recommend this place. It's cramped but a true place to get Vietnamese food.

    (5)
  • Nathan G.

This place is beyond dope. Other reviewers have mentioned the size of the spring rolls and egg rolls. hUGE. I'd put the pho up there with any others in the area, but the beef they use is much better than normal. Great staff with limited English although the are beginning to remember me now. Too bad I'm just outside their delivery range. Actually..that may be a good thing.

    (5)
  • L L.

Seriously a hole in the wall, but their bun rieu (crab noodle soup) was delicious. It had the right amount of tomato and lime flavor, and I know my bun rieu. For those of you who don't know, the crab is mostly crab cream and not crab meat. The chicken rice noodle was also good, but a bit greasy, definitely fried and not grilled. I'd come back for the bun rieu for sure.

  • Jon G.

mmmmmm..More delicious egg rolls! It seems to me that vietnamese restaurants know where it's at for making phenomenal egg rolls! Big, crunchy, and filled with delicous stuff inside. Plus the dipping sauce with some siracha makes it finger licking good! Pho is delicous too! The meatball and beef Pho had great flavor and the meat came out rare-medium rare which is perfect because it finishes cooking before u can start eating it! Huge portions and great prices. Warning! If you pay with a card, you need a bill higher than 15$ otherwise there's a 50 cent charge. Not a big deal. Pretty comparable to Kimsons and will definitely be alternating between the two places.

I met my husband here during lunch one day. That was a mistake as I left smelling like a deep fryer, but the food was good. I'd recommend it for takeout. The egg rolls were awesome - huge, and full of flavor. I had the pho, and it was excellent. Huge too - enough for the next day. Prices were also very low - what a bargain!

  • Dave P.

The food gets a five, but the lack of seating and greasy-air knocks off a star...plus, I gotta do what I can to keep the crowds down! :) Seriously, you know a place is authentic when they handwrite a sign and tape it to the door saying they've gone home for a month vacation. Great food.

I was looking for a healthy, inexpensive meal, and bam! Vietnamese it is. Based on the great reviews, I had wanted to try Cadao for some time, and I was not disappointed one bit. Holy giant spring rolls Batman! They really are a decent size, filled with yummy veggies, rice noodles, and at least three different kinds of lean meat, and served with delicious peanut sauce. When can I have another one of those things? The pho was also exceptional. Of course the portions were huge: along with the broth you get beef, scallions, sprouts, rice noodles, peppers, and fresh basil, and once it's all mixed together in the bowl and topped with fish sauce and lime, there's nothing like it. Seriously, where else can you get that meaty, savory, spicy flavor? One of the best parts: the portions are very generous. My one order of beef pho and cold spring rolls ended up being three full meals of umami heaven. Talk about bang for your buck! I think it worked out to less than $5/meal, including tip. Sure, you could do the Dollar Menu at some fast food restaurant for about the same amount of cash... but of course, cardiologists aren't cheap. I'll stick with the Vietnamese, thanks.

Really good prices and large portions. The spring rolls are massive! They're like spring roll burritos, and that's kinda awesome. The pho is pretty good as well. I've had better broth, this is best you'll find south of 62. Oh, it only comes in one size, massive. The Egg Roll Salad is fantastic, also massive, and the egg roll is really well flavored. I eat here about once a week, and the food has been super consistently well done. Everything tastes fresh, simple, and home made, and the family that runs the place is very kind. The place has literally 3 tables (4 seater, 4 seater, 2 seater), so it's essentially a hole-in-the-wall. I call it, "a place of good eat'in!"

    (5)
  • Rhonda G.

Ditto on the owners, and the eggrolls. I've never seen them this big or this stuffed. The shredded carrots are very noticeable because there's so many. it's a good sauce but not enough for these monsters, get extra. I got the usual beef lomein. Not only was it good, but the most attractively served in a take out I've ever seen. A couple of older women were going to town on the beef pho. I asked if it was as good as it looked. They thought it was delicious, as they told me between slurps. I think I'll check it out. I might even eat in, they now have 3 tables, and pretty good sized. One negative that almost made me dock a star. Lately I've been finding some really great cream cheese puffs. Skip here, more dough surrounding a tiny blob of cream cheese. I'm giving them a pass, since man can't live on cream cheese puffs alone, and here, you won't miss them.

Very good egg rolls, best pho outside of Nicollet Ave. But perhaps more importantly the owners are very friendly, caring, seem to enjoy what they do and genuinely care about their customers!

  • S W.

University ave or eat st quality pho, for us people stranded further south? Who knew? Now I do. Pho, Bun salads, and a few other soups. Don't go looking for an exhaustive authentic viet menu, but what there is is excellent in a homestyle made for you two seconds ago way. I'm very picky about greasy Chinese food (when is it ever even worth it in MN?) , so I'm not even gonna go there here. I got my grease on with the vietnamese egg rolls - they're pretty freakin' good, not the best ever, but far better than I expected. Tear up your basil (fresh!) , dump in your fish sauce and give it a try.

I got really excited to see a Vietnamese restaurant near my work. Finally! I can have my Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (Pork and egg roll bun) and I don't have to drive all the way to Nicollet Ave to get it. So the first time I go in I order Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (which was on the menu) and they tell me they are out of pork. So I ordered the Bún Gà Nng ( and ask for it with an egg roll. Turns out the egg roll was extra even though they did not have what I had asked for. I came in a second time and asked for Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (still on the menu) "sorry no pork". Ordered the Bún Gà Nng again with the up-sell egg roll (as others have stated is tasty and huge). Same thing happens the third time I try to order. Keep in mind that I have lunch between 11 and 12 so they should not be out of pork yet unless they only order half a pound once a week. At this point I am fairly frustrated and stop going. I figured I would try again and both dishes are no longer on the menu so I left. I really had a craving for some Bún today so I figured I would try one more time. Still gone from the menu. I asked why it went away and I was told that no one ordered it. Of course no one ordered it! How can you order a dish you never have!?!? Then they tell me the pork takes too long to cook. Out of the dozens of Vietnamese cafes I have been to this is the only one that has that issue. This is really sad because the Bún Gà Nng they DID have was quite good and I probably would have gotten it again. At this rate I will probably not return as it is clear by their two entree Chinese-American lunch special and their dwindling Vietnamese menu that this is another of many "Vietnamese" restaurants out there. Besides my gripe, the Chicken Bun and the egg roll (see the image I posted for this restaurant) was good while they had it. It is a small space so I would plan to take out if you go.

Found this place because I was looking for pho near friend's house. I like it! We got there about 30 minutes before it closed, so we were the only ones there. This place is very small...only about three or four tables. The owners were sooo nice! I ordered pho and my friend got a vermicelli salad. We both really liked our meals. My pho was really yummy. It was maybe not the greatest we've ever had, but very good. I will definitely be eating here again!

Tiny restaurant, seating for 13 with only 3 tables, absolutely no a/c (dined there when it was 93 degrees in Minneapolis. No service. No smiles or even a "thank you." After our dishes were served, the owners only re-appeared to give us the bill and stood over us to watch us add a tip.

    (1)
  • Bert B.

Just your ordinary Americanized Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant. Their Vietnamese egg rolls are good though. They do deliver within a 2-mile radius so that might keep this restaurant in play for me. Don't try to dine there. The place is a dive and doesn't have seating. This place is purely take out or delivery.

  • Steve I.

Wonderfully tasty pho! Low prices and quick service. I would definitely go back. I contemplated 5 stars but the place is TINY, they have a $10 credit card minimum, and the meat wasn't nearly as good as the broth. Still, great stuff - 4 stars.

    (4)
  • Jesus M.

The Pho (Fah) is Pho-fulous!!! Portions are enough to feed an army and don't get me started on the egg rolls and spring rolls. Forget about it! Delicious! Only con is the size of the place, get there at the wrong time and you'll have to take you order to go. There's about 4 tables that seat about 4 each.

Cadao Express is located in a nondescript commercial development near the intersection of Penn and 66th St. You will have to look carefully to see the sign. The place itself is miniscule with 4 small tables inside and a couple outside. Decor is basic at best as is service. The staff appear to have limited English but they try to please. There is no air conditioning and when I ate there it was stifling inside. The menu is small consisting of a variety of Vietnamese soups, egg and spring rolls and some Vietnamese and Chinese style dishes. That said, the food I had was pretty good. I had the spring rolls and the Bun Bo Hue. The spring rolls were large and fresh; however, the peanut sauce lacked zip. Bun Bo Hue is a spicy noodle soup with chunks of beef with lemon grass flavor. The noodles are thicker and more cylindrical than those in pho. Mine was spicy but not overwhelmingly so and the meat was tasty but had a fair amount of gristle as to be expected. I would rate the Bun Bo Hue equal to what I have had at Quang, my bench mark for Vietnamese soups. All in all I would return but on a cooler day or try their take out.

It is small (3-4 tables depending on how they are arranged) so I usually get my order to go. I love, love love their wonton soup. It pairs well with the spring rolls or egg rolls and has become my regular order.

Great spring rolls, very fresh! Garlic chicken, perfect balance of flavor and spicy. Two of us ate for $25. And the owner is so friendly! It's a small space (only a few seats inside) so you might get a table, but we got there and it was nice out so we ate outside at a table.

This place used to be Cali's Express, but has changed ownership. It is now Cadao Express. I saw this place when I was out and about for PennFest, but didn't stop in. I was excited that they had pho on their menu so I had to drag the family in for a visit. The place is TINY - only 2 tables (they can seat a total of 6 people). Luckily, the offer delivery (limited delivery area) and take-out. The boys had the #8 pho (fresh sliced beef & meat balls) and I had the special. The bowls were large - enough to fill me up and satisfy my pho craving. The broth itself was good. I wouldn't say that it's as good as Quang's or Jasmine 26, but it's light years better than the pho at Bona or Lotus. It was a wee bit greasy and the tendon and tripe in my pho didn't taste as fresh as it does when I order from the restaurants on Nicollet. I would recommend sticking with the sliced beef & meat balls. I got plenty of meat with my bowl of pho (I hate it when I get all rice noodles and not enough meat) and there were plenty of condiments (bean sprouts, lime wedges, basil, cilantro, jalapeno) to go with the pho. Most of their menu is the typical Americanized Chinese fare, but they have bun salads and things that make me miss my mom - bun rieu and bun bo hue. Unfortunately, they don't have any banh mi. The service was great. The owners were very friendly and polite. They asked if my 6-year-old wanted onions in his pho, which I appreciated, because the 6-year-old hates onions. Most places don't ask. It's a family-owned business and it was really slow when we were there. If you are in the neighborhood or if you're not in the neighborhood but don't want to trek down to Nicollet, stop by and give them some business. Just be warned that it's not fine dining. I don't want them to close - I need a neighborhood pho restaurant!

Tiny little place. Absolutely charming proprietor who loves to share knowledge of the food. We felt very welcomed while there. Also, the food was good. I'm so upset I forgot to leave a tip. Please leave a little extra for me if you go. ;)

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
