Here we are again. Not much has changed. The bed is mediocre, the wi-fi up and down and interactions with the staff have an undertone of "we're the only game in town." What Archer House needs to improve is a good solid chain hotel like a Courtyard Marriott to move into Northfield. All of their competitors here are either too small or really terrible.

The good: The desk staff were really friendly. The Indian food was better than average. The building has a lot of class and character; very unique. Lots of nice shops within walking distance. The location of the pub in the basement was pretty cool. The bad: The staff that weren't working at the desk. The room had garbage on the floor when we arrived. The bed was laughably uncomfortable (both my wife and I woke up with intense backaches). The pub food was mediocre at best. The headboard of our bed wasn't attached to the bed and slammed into the wall whenever getting into/out of bed or repositioning during sleep. Thin doors + lots of drunk wedding guests = something that sounds like a party in our room. No coffee provided in the morning. The rest: We really wanted to like this place, but too much went wrong in the course of one weekend visit. I imagine it gets better, but the one visit was so sour we're unsure if we'll return.

I adore Archer House!!!! I have stayed here twice in the past 6 months and am looking forward to another stay this next week..... This hotel is a classic! The staff is warm, friendly, hospitable - just downright wonderful! The rooms are meticulous and comfortable. I will add that the "cozy rooms" - really best meant for 1 - are truly "cozy" but if given the choice of a cozy room here or staying elsewhere - id still stay at Archer House. The location cannot be beat - the Tavern restaurant, Chipati restaurant, both onsite and downtown Northfield at your feet... I simply can't say enough wonderful things about Archer House.

We had a great stay here with a newly renovated room. This is an historical inn so the rooms are small, but we had a flat screen TV, climate control, new bed, etc. It was great. There are three restaurants in the facility and all are great and among the best in Northfield. Location is downtown and just a very short walk to Carleton. What's not to like!!!

This place is a dump. They are in the process of renovating but what does that mean? Some of the lower level common areas are getting fixed up, but fixed up to what? They had no effect on guest comfort. My room was down a series of serpentine hallways which were lined with furniture caked with dust. These were not part of the renovation. It just looke dlike they wanted to store furniture between the elevator and the rooms on the third floor. As for my room - the four post bed was nice but every other aspect was dated. The black whirlpool bath - huge but dated. Oak cabinets - these were cheap when they were bought and look terrible 35 years later. The TV was small, however, I couldn't hear it (nor sleep) anyway since the wall mounted heater/air conditioner was really loud. The staff told me that there were no immediate plans to renovate the rooms upstairs. The money isn't there and it may take "years". I wouldn't usually say this, but when in Northfield, stay at a chain hotel instead of this place.

This is a nice and comfortable Inn with a twist of old fashioned architecture and modern flare. Each room is uniquely decorated. The front desk staff was courteous and available to assist. There were a few things out in the hallways that should've been stored away and out of sight. The WiFi was a little spotty at times too but overall I enjoyed my stay there.

This is an interesting option to stay at if you need to be in Northfield, but unfortunately it also just about the only option. There isn't any competition from any chain hotel here (yet) so that leaves Archer House with some improvement areas to be desired. The hotel facade is fascinating, the lobby and interior look traditional but ok, while the rooms need a makeover. The hotel staff are very friendly and hospitable.

For me, this place is a charmer, but if you're a hotel snob expecting a small-town version of the Four Seasons, prepare to be disappointed. The hotel is old, but historic, and many of the rooms have been updated recently. A group of us stay here every year and we usually rent the 4th floor, which has three really nice adjoining rooms, which I highly recommend. Once again, if you travel alot and are used to staying at the Ritz, in order to appreciate the Archer House you will need to come down off your high horse. If you can get in the old-school mindset and appreciate a bit of history while giving up the crystal chandelier, you will be quite content here.

This place was okay. My wife and I stayed in a 'cozy' room with a full bed. The room was very small, with just enough space to walk between the bed and the walls. There wasn't a dresser or a closet, or even hooks or hangers. No iron either. No in-room coffee or coffee in the lobby. (You have to buy it in the adjacent restaurant.). Also, no bath tub. There is wifi, though. The air conditioner is a window unit and the only fan speed that worked was 'high', which was too loud and forceful. I imagine the more expensive rooms not labeled as 'cozy' are a lot more comfortable.

I thought this was to be the nice hotel in Northfield?! I have worked in Northfield for 4 years and last week I had a late meeting and a super early morning breakfast with only 9 hours between and decided to spend the night instead of commuting back to the cities. I parked in the back parking lot and could not for the life of me figure out how to get to the reception- there are no signs, just a variety of random entrances and staircases. I finally figured it out after about 5 minutes and when I got to the reception and said that I couldn't figure it out the receptionist said "yeah, people eventually get it, takes awhile though". Um, hello? Then I checked in and got my room. I just crawled into bed because I was so tired from a 14 hour work day. Sitting on the bed made the bedboard jiggle-every movement made it THUNK against the wall. It wasn't attached, it was just upright. Then I had to listen to an extremely loud air conditioner or something outside- a loud hum all night long that caused me to not sleep all night. In the AM I realized that the towels were used from the previous person and that the shower wasn't washed, the shampoo was still open (and not new) and that there was a a dry cleaner's hanger and plastic on the hook. Then I remembered that the bed was not made that well and think that I was sleeping in someone else's sheets. This hotel has so much potential. It has an excellent location, cute decor, but it lacks the detail needed to run such an establishment.

We stayed in the "St. Olaf" room on the second floor. It has been fully renovated including a large flat screen TV. The room was great, the staff friendly, and the price fair. Northfield is a cute little town filled with nice restaurants and shops.

Despite the other scathing reviews, I have stayed here twice and had pleasant experiences. It is historic and locally owned which are both good reasons to stay in my opinion. It is also located in the main part of town near most businesses and in close walking distance to Carleton. The manager was friendly, chatty, and helpful especially concerning future reservations and restaurant recommendations.
