there's nothing incredible about Whitey's, it's some good bar food and a decent price. never too packed, so a great alternative to bulldog if you're not a fan of crowds.

I love Whitey's - I really do. I love the food, it's super tasty, they give you generous servings, & it's never boring. The beer selection isn't huge, but anywhere you got Fulton & Indeed, you're fine. The music kicks ass, acoustics are excellent - you can always depend on them to have the right baseball or futbol match on. BUT. Nine times out of ten the service sucks. I've had a staff of three ignore me or not see me for 5-10 minutes on several occasions, but what's worse is when they do show up, they can just be shitty.

Came here for happy hour with some old coworkers on a Monday and was fairly surprised to see four or five tables full. I ordered a few cocktails, which seem to run a little weak but considering that it was rail liquor (and a Monday) I wasn't complaining. As a table we ordered Pork Nachos and the Artichoke Dip. I nearly elbowed my friends out of the way to get as much of that Artichoke Dip as possible - it was delicious! AND they gave us plenty of bread (a huge pet peeve of mine is not having enough bread to dip - it's a cardinal sin in my opinion). We did split the two appetizers between 5 people so portions were a little small but it worked out to be only around $9 a person, which was a steal in my opinion. The waitress was good, no frills. She checked on us regularly and happily split the tab for us when asked. I'd love to see this place on a Friday or Saturday.

Always stop in here at least once a week. You can find some nice yuppie reprieve here! Drinks are always kickin' and worth it. If you ever had an instance where you thought service was lacking...you probably deserved it. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu and you always receive your food hot and speedy. If you're thinking of stopping here just do it- it's worth it.

It's a bar. After dining across the street at MASU this was a close option for ONE MORE drink with the girls and to meet up some friends! Only $5 for my Vanilla Vodka Diet. I like that. Maybe I'm used to Vegas' steeeeep drink prices. Whatever. My drink was good and it was just a regular ol' chill bar atmosphere. I also really enjoyed the bathroom door decor for the men's and women's bathrooms. Yes.

Portobello sandwich was delicious, charbroiled taste is hard to come by as a vegetarian. There were many veggie options, I don't recommend the veggie quesadilla however it was all beans. Staff was friendly and insightful. Defiantly coming back!

" CORNER" BAR FOR SURE !!!! It's on a corner.............. My first time here, and I'll give it a solid 4 stars! But because of the dim light, I can't tell you how clean it was or wasn't. But then again, I look fabulous in dim light ! Talk about laid back on a Sunday evening, totally comfortable and not super packed. We even found a close parking spot. I was there with daughter, and we split a $7 salad that could have fed a family of 4, and one of the best walleye sandwiches I've ever had. No batter on the fish, just pure unadulterated, FISH ! On a tasty hoagie roll. Yum. And again, frickin tater tots. I think I might have to go to a support group meeting to lay off the little tater gems. We almost ordered the fruit instead, but, our better sense took over :-) So this HUGE wooden half naked lady , larger than life, is mounted above the bar with a NO SMOKING hanging. Looks like it is straight out of a Stillwater bar, the old Ruby Begonias. Hilarious. The whole place is hilarious. Except the food.... it is damn good. Next time, the TURKEY BURGER !!! Our server was also laid back, but still was on top of everything. We actually relaxed here. Probably because there was nobody to impress or to be impressed. Perfect. Too bad I missed the restroom signs, again, hilarious. I'll be back. P A C K E D F U L L O F O L D T I M E C H A R M !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my go-to bars in Minneapolis. One of the best whiskey lists around. The number of single-malt scotches available here is something I really enjoy. They have it all Glenfiddich, Oban, The Balvenie, Laphroaig, Talisker... etc. Its a bar that feels like a bar. No gimmicks. Not divey, not pretentious. Its quiet enough to have a conversation but always has some good music playing. They have 2 TVs for sporting events. There are always people here, but getting a seat at the bar or at one of the many tables is never a problem. The huge reclaimed wood carving mounted above the bar is something you wont see anywhere else. The brunch is really good and so is the Ruben. From there its solid bar food that wont disappoint. All the juices in the drinks are fresh squeezed... no really. If you order a screwdriver you get vodka and an orange squeezed into a glass.

I like Whitey's quite a lot. It's a good middle ground of the bars in NE. It's usually not packed, including my last stop on a Fri night between 9-11pm. It's a little nicer than some of the other bars but still very casual. You can actually get a pretty good bite to eat. I like the atmosphere. Lots of wood. Dark but not pitch black. TVs so you can watch the game but this is no sports bar and they're easy to ignore if you wish. Service has been good. Good stuff.

I had been here several times for a couple of drinks before trying the food. The staff is always friendly and quick. The beer selection is adequate. The atmosphere is that of an unpretentious but clean neighborhood bar with a few of its own unique features. I wish I'd known sooner that I was passing up the best place in the neighborhood for pub food. I don't say this to slight Mac's or Bulldog. What I mean is that the kitchen at Whitey's is that good. The slow cooked beef sandwich is addictive, especially with a side of their cole slaw. The Cuban is solid. The chicken kebabs are a big surprise out of a neighborhood bar. I've had breakfast there once and it was fine but nothing special. Lunch and dinner entrees are, though. Next time you're in the area, rather than stopping in after for a drink eating at one of the area's other great choices, try making it the main event.

Nothing too special about this place in my opinion. I ordered a salad with grilled chicken on it. This was very tasty but they put almost a half of an onion on the thing! My friend ordered a cheese burger medium rare without any garnishes. His burger came out well done with all of the garnishes. Either there is a communication problem between the waitstaff and kitchen or someone just doesn't care about their job. The replacement burger wasn't much better which was disappointing. I did see some items on the menu that I'd like to try so I'll be back to do another review. The decor is weird with that lady mounted above the bar and it is pretty dark inside.

Whitey's is another one of our office staples for lunch. According to my lunch ordering regulars, they have the best BLT and best cobb salad in town. I have yet to partake in Whitey's BLT, but the cobb salad is a close second to the Blue Door Pub's cobb. The bacon on Whitey's cobb salad is thick and crispy, which is a hard mark to hit. I can only imagine how awesome the BLT must be. The staff at Whitey's is always very patient and accommodating. I've got picky eaters on my hands, and they always listen attentively to the changes I need made (no onions, extra dressing, etc...), and the kitchen always gets it right. Pricing is fair - you get a lot of food for the $10 you pay for an entree. If you order fruit with your sandwich, be prepared for a treat. We always get whole slices of pineapple or melon, often with berries or other fresh fruit. It's not your typical sad cup of canteloupe and grapes from last Sunday's brunch leftovers. Dining in can be hit or miss - I've had great service at Whitey's, and I've had poor service at Whitey's. The food is consistently good, and I'll definitely keep ordering for lunch.

Stopped in here before our dinner at Gardens of Salonica for a few beers. First thing I hear is John Prine, then Johnny Cash. Perfect beer drinking music! Sat by the fireplace had a few taps and one bloody which was excellent. Cool atmosphere and good service. Will definitely come back to try their food very soon.

The usual suspects and I were on a little night out recently, and the suggestion was made to visit Whitey's for dinner. . . . What? ! . . . for dinner? ! . . . I must admit, we all looked at each other unsure if this was a brilliant idea, or an act of revolt against our years of ritual Whitey's weekend breakfasts. After careful consideration, we found ourselves at the table we're agreeably all too familiar with. At first we were like creatures out of our natural weekend habitat, and even one of our regular servers had to "double take" and mention how surprised she was to see us in for dinner (too funny). In all seriousness, I wish we had taken a dinner visit to Whitey's sooner. I was very impressed with the extent of the dinner menu (huge) and the fact that it was not at all what I had envisioned. Much like their breakfast offerings, dinner at Whitey's was better than expected, but still doesn't pretend to be "five star". I saw pages of everything from appetizers to full on entrées, salads, sandwiches, truly something for everyone - and portion size certainly did not disappoint. Our entrees were executed flawlessly and loaded with golden crispy fries. I have to mention great chicken wings whenever I have them, and Whitey's were awesome. I also ordered the carnitas pork slider appetizer, and was surprised to see four huge sliders on the plate. Prices were well within reason, and the boys and I have never really had an issue with service. For me, Whitey's just continues to exist as that corner bar and sanctuary - always there with the embrace of great food and drink regardless of the time of day.

There are two things I love about Whitey's that I can't seem to get anywhere else: the atmosphere, & $6 Jameson on the rocks'. Whitey's is a bar's bar. Not overly divey, but also not overly pretentious, you'll find a good mix of people and it never really gets too crazy in here. Whitey himself comes down once in awhile to say hi to the regulars and grab a beer to take home with him, and he's a nice guy! Every time I come here, I end up super drunk, undoubtedly because of the cheap glasses of Jameson on the rocks. Because of this, I always forget that the pulled pork sandwiches, although super delicious, are also pretty spicy. They ARE really good though, so it goes without saying that I maneuver my way through it and manage to finish it every time. Cheap drinks, good food & a great atmosphere are the reasons why I come back to Whitey's time & time again.

I've been smitten by Whitey's. Last week I went there twice, once on a date and once with a friend. The first time, my date and I had a couple rounds at the bar. The bartender was friendly, but unobtrusive (he could tell we were enjoying ourselves, as could anybody who saw us practically wrapped around each other at the bar!). Ordered a Crown Royal Manhattan, neat, and it was AWESOME. Strong, flavorful with lot's of rye whiskey spice and good bitters. I was v. happy with this drink, Manhattans being a go to. Like I said, the bartender kept his distance, which was great. He was chatting down the bar with some folks who obviously weren't on a very romantic date, when I shot him the split second "hey, I need my check RIGHT NOW so I can get this boy home." He's obviously experienced, because he knew exactly what I was trying to convey and dropped his conversation to bring me our check within five seconds. It was super appreciated. Later in the week, took a friend for dinner because I had read the food was good. She was very happy with her burger and I was happy with my roast beef. Piping hot fries. Food is a little expensive, IMO but big portions make up for it. Also, the drinks are very reasonable, so it all balances out. Table service on the second time was quick, conscientious and friendly. This place has a bit of a dive bar feel, but it's very clean. It's casual and unpretentious. Whitey's is probably a great pick when you're with a group of friends, and half like something lively, half like something quiet, half like something dark and half like something bright. I'd say Whitey's can please a group with disparate tastes without disappointing anybody. I'll echo someone else and say - if you've stopped in Whitey's on a whim because you got tired of sitting in the Bulldog or New Bohemia for three hours, maybe next week make it the main attraction. You'll be glad you did!

This place has awesome Screwdrivers and Greyhounds. They fresh squeeze them and they make them stiff :-) Atmosphere is cool and relazed the lone bartender on a sunday afternoon is usually relaxed and laid back about your orders and everything is on a single sheet ticket. The style of place is old school as well tile thats broken and wooden chairs with worn leather on them.

I for one, enjoy drinking in the shadows of the giant half naked beast-woman. Perhaps it provides the illusion of protection or a guardian of evil forces. Who knows. Anywho, I had never had tuna tataki prior to having it at Whitey's, and now I consider myself a seared tuna enthusiast. Thank you Whitey's for opening my eyes! I can walk here from my house and never miss an opportunity to do so. This includes during the last metrodome smashing snowstorm a month back. Drinks are inexpensive and the late night vibe fits the type of night where you wish to talk loudly and not offend a first date or an anniversary dinner at the table next to you. Btw, the bloodies are made from fresh tomato juice. While I find it refreshing, this may catch others off guard.

also, when we went to leave - the manager came running outside after us & announced that we still hadn't paid our bill. We had already paid our bill with our waitress & we explained this to him. He told us it was the other bill for the table nearby us. huh? we realized he meant a table of ccomplete strangers that were like 3 tables away from ours. We explained that it was just the 8 of us & we had no idea who those other people were. He said if we didn't pay the stranger-table's bill, he'd call the cops. Seriously? So bottom line, this table of strangers, must have walked out on their bill & now the manager was expecting us to pay for it. I might return if I'm in a mood to pay for the whole restaurants tabs!

Super adorable! I enjoyed the patio of this place and there is a lot of room inside and nice and open. The food... delicious!! If you like mushrooms - you MUST order the mushroom martini (and order an extra order of bread you will probably need it)!! It was delicious! And if you like spicey, try the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Wontons - they had major kick of spice. We didn't try their entrees though. They have an alright selection for taps, but nothing that amazed me. I love this place!

From the 'burbs and want to "explore" NE? Well, this spot might be just for you. There's nothing to really say about it other than it's a solid bar with ok food and TVs in case your bracket is doin gwell and you are with a bunch of people who couldn't care less. The food is ok, nothing to write home about, but it's solid bar food none the less. I seem to be ending p here regularly but with no desire to do so. I'd rather be pub crawling around other joints in the hood, but my pack seems to be intimidated by the idea of me being tour guide for a night. That must end soon.

I didn't think I would like this bar because the drinks were sort of expensive for my cheap budget and the staff were never too friendly.. but I've eaten here twice and both times I ordered the Walleye Sandwich with aioli. The first time I ate the sandwich it had me dreaming about when the next time would be, and the next time I had it I kept thinking of how I could keep it from ending (so basically trying to slow my eating while stuffing my face as fast as I could). While I don't frequent Whitey's very often, I do compare all of my fish sandwiches to Whitey's. I have yet to find one that I enjoy as much, and that, my friends, is something to be mentioned. I agree with other yelpers when they say it is not too divey or clubby either. It's more rustic and it doesn't get terribly packed, so that is a cool thing when you're bar hopping in the NE area. Bulldog across the street can get pretty busy, so if it's too busy for you just walk the 30 feet across the street and find yourself a stool at Whitey's.

The food here is always fresh and very good! Big salads & tasty sandwiches are what i go here for. I work nearby so many of my meals here are over the lunch hour. I've also had weekend brunch here, too. The menu is pretty standard. I like going here bc they do a good job with it. On a recent lunch i had a juicy turkey burger. My dining guests had their clubhouse sandwich and a turkey Reuben. We were all satisfied with our choices. This place isn't fancy. They maintain a saloon type atmosphere, including an Antique cash register and hand written tabs.

Man, do I want to love Whitey's. I really tried! It's just not going to happen. The place itself is not the issue - I love that as soon as you walk in it feels like you're back in the old Nordeast, filled with all types of people from all walks of life, with beer from decades ago still leaving its pungent olfactory mark on you, and it has a killer-awesome old bar. The problem is the food. It isn't BAD, it's just not GREAT for the price. Every time I've been here (granted, I've only ventured in for brunch), I feel like I am going to be getting an inexpensive brunch in my 'hood. Unfortunately, I always end up spending as much as I do at higher-priced (and higher-quality) restaurants, except without the satisfaction of having just eaten a delicious meal. The huevos were so-so. When I asked our server if they came with beans, she looked at me like I was IN-sane. It's just a pile of eggs (50/50 chance of them being cooked the way you want them), salsa, likely an entire brick of cheese, a tortilla or two, and some other toppings. They aren't bad; they just aren't what I expected for the price. The biscuits and gravy are pretty awesome. I might have just had bad luck with the other food, and will definitely come back for dinner to give Whitey's another go (I hear the burgers are worth trying), but Whitey's brunch and I need to accept our irreconcilable differences. The atmosphere is 5-star in my book (minus the surplus of hipster kiddos), but the food has some catching-up to do. For you drinkers out there, the bloody mary is good, as are the martinis. Otherwise, it's pretty standard bar fare. Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal.

Another fun place to stop by on your booze tour around Northeast. Very popular spot for the 20 - 30s crowd, TVs showing whatever sport is on, jukebox in the back, plenty of beers on tap, yummy fried stuff, and a giant scantily clad dead hooker hanging on top of the bar. Can anyone clarify if that thing is a lifeless prostitute or a go-go dancer who likes planking?

It was fine....I actually ended up coming here last Friday because one guy in my group wanted to watch an NBA game. The bar across the street was looking pretty full and we noticed the tvs at Whiteys had the NBA on. As far as food goes, nothing looked exceptional. And nothing really was that great when it came out. It was ok. Beer selection was standard, nothing out of the ordinary. Service was decent too. I guess, overall, I was just a bit underwhelmed. Highlight is the bar itself....It's old (which I like). And there is a really cool piece above the bar. But next time, I'll opt for the bar across the street.

Yet another killer ne bar. Not divey but not clubby either. Which makes it kind of awesome. I adore any place that has crispin on tap too and theres no liquor they don't have. Seriously they might have the most extensive bar in the tc. Love the decor. Causal with lots of wood. Good mix of people like the rest of NE. The food menu looks awesome. There were about 5 different things I could've eaten but the person I was with wasn't feeling adventurous so we went with the nachos. Idk if the salsa is made in house but it sure was tasty. The bartenders were excellent. They make some good strong drinks, are pretty cute and great at conversating...which shouldn't be a hard thing to find in a bartender but for some reason it is. I will surely be back to drink and have some food.

Grabbed some lunch here today on the patio. The waitress was nice, the food was mediocre. Also, why at 12 noon could I not get lunch? On a Sunday, I realize some places serve breakfast longer, but even in those places they overlap their lunch menu. This was a Saturday, and the only options were breakfast. I ordered the Breakfast Sammy with no bacon. It was a croissant with a slab of eggs/cheese and a side of hollandaise sauce. The sauce wasn't Sysco brand, but it was made incorrectly - and, dare I say it: bland. If you're going to serve hollandaise, you can't serve it broken... that's criminal. I'm not sure what fat-sauce has to add to a meal of egg fat, cheese fat and croissant fat either. Whatever - I did order it... at least it didn't also have bacon fat on my version. I imagine this is great hangover fare - I just wanted lunch. Even as breakfasts go, this wasn't so hot. Bonus points for the fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, though.

I enjoyed my portabella sandwich almost as much as the view of the giant, scantily clad woman mounted above the bar. It was a pile of balsamic-coated veggies, with grilled onions and roasted red peppers trying to sneak out the whole time. I also tried a bite of my friend's walleye sandwich and immediately came down with a case of food envy. The fish was perfectly done with a crisp breading and a spicy aioli. Mmm... will order that next time fo-sho. As others have mentioned, Whitey's seems to be the homey, unpretentious antidote to our city's douchey bars. Granted, we didn't stay the whole night, but the crowd and the atmosphere seemed much more manageable than some of the other bars in NE. It was busy but not overwhelming. A couple of missteps last night: Our server was a bit surly, but our food came out lightning fast (especially for a party of six)... and the wait assistant/bar-back helping her was much more friendly. The beer is expensive and I don't think they have specials. The $6 Blue Moon pints were declared "a rip-off" by my friend, who paid more for her beer than I did for my vodka.

It's a solid neighborhood bar with better than average food. Nothing really outstanding but it's comfortable and lacks douchbaggy pretention. A good place for a couple of beers or drinks. Oh, and very good fresh squeezed juice.

My only real qualm with Whiteys is their lacking beer selection. With The Bulldog right across the street, I would think they would make a small attempt to rival their outstanding Belgian selection, but they don't. Then, Whiteys still stays super busy, so I guess it's not much of an issue. The food here is really really good. Both their steak and tuna tartares are done perfectly as far as I'm concerned. I've probably had their walleye sandwich at least 10 times; it took a lot to get me convinced to stray away and try something else on the menu. Glad I did, because I haven't had one bad item yet. Great service, great patio, and the bartenders pick good tunes.

You know...this is a pretty darn good bar. A true Northeast bar. It's got exceptional bar food. This bar makes me proud to be Minnesotan....one time I was walking over to get a tasty burger at the bulldog and I really wanted to watch the Gopher hockey game that was on, well, it didn't happen to be on at the Bulldog which only has like 10 TV's....so I look across the street and sure enough Whitey's had every TV on the Gopher hockey game. Thankyou Whitey. We walked right over and had an awesome time next to the fire! Kick ass. I'm not gonna fall over an rave about the place, cause it's just not that kinda place.

  • Kimberly T.

Didn't try the food but the bar atmosphere was enjoyable. Drinks were reasonably priced & plenty of places to sit or stand around 11p on a Friday night. If Bulldog is packed I'd walk across the street & drink here again.

I was tempted to give Whiteys four stars but the poor beer selection caused me to lower my rating to three. Three is not a bad rating, it just means "A-OK". Food is good! Excellent sandwiches and fries. Great Rueben! Service is also good. They seem to have enough wait staff to deal with the crowds. Nice Nordeast atmosphere. Not a dive but not pretentious either. I like it, they are A-OK in my book.

This might be a solid bar or good place for drinks, but enough things went wrong at a Sunday breakfast that I'd think twice (or three times) before coming back. It was a decent spot for breakfast, and how can you really mess up eggs or hashbrowns? We sat down at the first open table up front and it took the waitress more than a couple minutes to stop by with a menu or to take a drink order. My friend had a fruit plate (why he ordered this at a bar is beyond me!), and I had the classic of two eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. The bright spot was that the time from when we finally ordered to the food delivery was short -- always a plus during a busy time. However, maybe they should have taken an extra minute in the kitchen to get things right. The eggs were overdone, the hashbrowns were barely crispy on the outside and far from done on the inside, and I had to ask for my toast. When the waitress brought it, she said she hoped I'd ordered white because she didn't write it down. I'd ordered wheat but decided to take what I could get at that point. The toast was more like stale white bread with butter. My pal's fruit looked all right, though, but I thought $7.95 was a bit pricey. If a group of friends asked to meet for beers and maybe some snacks, I might be inclined to join them at Whitey's. But I can guarantee I won't suggest this place to anyone or go myself. Ever.

Recently was back and much more pleased! I think being tucked inside their cozy bar on a wintery day made my heart much happier. Had another greyhound and it was what I had expected the first time: happiness exploded in my mouth. Well, not really exploded, as it's more of a sipping thing..... but you get it.

I love grabbing breakfast at Whiteys on the weekends. Who wouldn't love the eye opener which comes with fresh squeezed juice! I'm generally a breakfast crowd person there, but have gone for drinks once or twice in the past too.

All I can say, is holy strong drinks. I don't know if this is the norm, but I actually had to ask the bartender to add some soda to my drink. He laughed and said that is how he liked them. However, I am not complaining. I sat at the bar so I can't comment on the wait staff and I didn't eat dinner either. I came to drink. I will say, the dudes sitting next me had ordered dinner and their food looked delicious and amazing. Oh and I find the lady bolted to the top of the bar a bit disturbing, but amusing at the same time. She looks like she might take a chunk out of the bar. If that thing ever fell I would not want to be anywhere near it.

I LOVE the ribs and chicken (BBQ and fried). The ribs aren't really slow-and-low like I normally prefer them, but they get nicely caramelized and the spicy barbecue sauce is really nice. The baked beans and slaw here are terrific too. The other thing here that is the best I've had in the Twin Cities is the Mexican-style corn bread. It is creamy, almost like grits in the center it's so moist, and the top is crusted with caramelized cheddar. AWESOME! Reminds me of my Southern home.

Got a treat from a buddy. A good food and a good service, quick and attentive. I ordered yellow fin tuna sandwich with fruit as a side. Awesome, the pumpernickel bread was fresh, also the tuna, lettuce, tomato and the fruits. The tuna was so thick and with cajun spices,hmmm...side fruit were grapes, 2 slices of cantaloupes and 2 slices pineapples. A perfect portion. Their sirloin sandwich also good. The down side though their sandwich bread was a bit soggy because of the sauce from the steak. Overall good food, decent price and on the weekend like this, alot of hip urban young people came here and the space was limited so it was crowded.

Looking for a good turkey burger? How about a GREAT turkey burger? Well folks, Whitey's World Famous Saloon has what I am convinced are the best turkey burgers in town. They also have strong drinks (woohoo!!) and just about anything else you could want for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Their menu is extensive and everything I've had has been great. They are a nice change of pace (and food) from their neighbor across the street (Bulldog NE). Don't get me wrong - I love Bulldog, but sometimes I have found that their menu is a bit limited. My Whitey's Cool Stuff List: - You can get fresh fruit instead of tots, fries, salad, etc. if that's your thing - The turkey burger with pepper jack is AMAZING - You can get just about anything you can image for breakfast - seriously... try it! - I am told the bloody marys are good - Never as oppressively crowded as its neighbor across the street (hey I'm happy that both businesses are kicking butt. I just don't want to have to wait for 45 minutes for a table to open up or be smashed against the bar by frat boys on a Friday night....) - There is a weird big wooden lady above the bar. In my book this is a good thing.

I keep coming back to Whitey's time and time again for drinks on the weekend. I don't know what the special ingredient is...maybe the huge lady hanging above the bar...but no matter what I have never been disappointed. People watching here is great and the staff is friendly. I like the hustle and bustle of NE. We easily caught a cab outside last weekend. No worries at Whitey's..

Food/Drink: We came here to grab a beer (or three) before deciding on food. This place rocks for that. It's truly a great bar to have some drinks at whether it's inside or outside. The beer list is decent, but nothing to write home about. The mixed drinks/cocktails are done pretty well and no one complained. Either way, good all around. We didn't eat here, but there are some things on the menu that would drag me back if I had to. Ambiance: A bar made to be a bar. What a novel concept. Good setup inside and the patio outside has never been too busy to not get some seats which is a plus. The whole intersection gives you enough people watching options that you could absolutely lose a few hours there. Service: Great. Drinks empty, order up. Even tolerated one of our "more friendly" buddies which we just rolled our eyes at. Either way, we appreciated it and the bill came out quick enough. Overall: Good. If you're in the NE, you'd be hard pressed not to come here at least for one drink in you overall night. Sure there's plenty of other options, but Whitey's is good and it's an institution at this point. If you're planning on something fancier then grabbing some booze and have some decent food options, head somewhere else.

Meh. This place has never really impressed me. I really WANT to like it (how could you not with the gigantic statue on the wall), I just struggle. I've been here for brunch a handful of times, and I've stumbled in here on a couple of fuzzy occasions for a drink. The brunch is alright. The biscuits and gravy are pretty good, but everything else is just so-so. Their Bloody Mary is not good, don't order it. The people watching can be fun sometimes, & the patio is a nice jumping off point for dive-bar nights. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong things. I'll give Whiteys a few more shots, but I have yet to be impressed.

Better than I expected, but still not great. It's bar food, in a bar, done reasonably well.

Been to Whitey's a few times before. Their fish is great! They have a good beer selection, but no drink specials. Some weird Nordeast characters can be found in and around this bar, which makes things interesting. One time I got dinner here and it took the waitress 45 minutes to bring the bill. It took crossing our arms and staring at her to get her over, even though she had been back and forth to a different table several times. Not cool! This is a good place, but not a great place.

I've never had a bad experience here, but then again, I can not think of a time where I've felt like this place is amazing. The food was typical and what I was expecting. They really didn't go out of the way to make it that great (rightfully so, I mean, it's a bar). The service, wasn't bad but wasn't great. I always feel like I am asking for the bartender or server to stand on their head when I've ordered a drink. I mean, how hard is it to make a whiskey? But every time I've ordered, it's like they have to go to Scotland to get a new bottle. Come on, I know I'm not the "trendy hipster" but I'm not making your life a living hell. That being said, try the greyhound. They make a mean one.

They serve a full bar menu until midnight. I thought the food was pretty good, nothing to go out of your way for though. I got a roast beef sandwich with fries for $9. I was in on a Thursday night, they don't have any specials, so $5 beers will add up quick. There was a James Brown impersonator dancing for about an hour. He wasn't affiliated with the bar, just some guy off the street. It was pretty funny.

I love it for its great bar food and laid back atmosphere. The hipsters will be across the street at The Bulldog NE overpaying for their burgers and Stella. I'll be at Whitey's savoring either the pulled pork sandwich or the BBQ chicken sandwich. Perfect every time. Oh, and the Newcastle and Summit on tap are great compliments, too. The buffalo wings could be a little spicier, but the flavor is perfect and their homemade chunky blue cheese dressing more than makes up for it. I always get extra for my fries, which are always super hot and crispy. They're a little on the thin side, but they're the way I prefer them. Absolutely delicious. This is my favorite bar for bar food in all of Minneapolis. Oh, and hope you get the short-haired waitress with glasses. Your glass will never approach empty. She's great.

My turkey burger was moist and tasty.. beer was fresh.. atmosphere was really dark and it gets pretty loud. Probably not a good place if you have any eye or ear issues going on.

No, Whitey's doesn't offer the bumpin' after work atmosphere of Bulldog across the street, but the service is very friendly, prompt and the menu is awesome. It doesn't ever really get packed here, but there is always a good buzz of people around. The veggie quesadilla is the bomb. Also, they use freshly squeezed juices in their cocktails, which is good because they are delicious, but bad because I can't stop drinking them.

I haven't been to Whitey's for a few years. I was quickly reminded how much I like this solid Northeast neighborhood bar. While the food is standard bar fare, the menu is vast with lots of options to choose from . I also like that this bar has a comfortable feel that is a is void of pretention. I was with a group of friends on this particular evening, but Whitey's is also a place where you would feel comfortable going alone for a drink or meal.

Went here for a bite to eat and a couple drinks before we hit the town. Overall it was pretty good, although there were a couple small complaints. First off the food was great. I had the Chicken Greek Salad and it was very good. A little heavy on the dressing but still good. And the three of my other friends had the cheeseburger. It didn't sound like they were all that impressed but they all mentioned they liked the hamburger bun. The only real problem was our waitress was pretty much non-existent which was disappointing. But either way I'll be going back one of these days.

I ate lunch and had after work drinks/apps at Whitey's damn near everyday from when they opened (rest in peace ol' St. Anthony East) 'til we moved our office a half block further away - i know, i am lame and lazy. things i love - BURGERS are great, Connie the bartender/waitress has worked there since the St Anthony East days and is the best, artichoke dip - yum, fries like crack. things that bug the hell out of me. WHITEY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX THE LADIES ROOM BATHROOM DOORS. seriously, it's chronic and a cheap fix. number two - somewhere around 2001/2002 Whitey bought this gigantic, and i am talking HUGE old building "art" of a scantily clad dancer and had it mounted above the bar. #1 - she looks like she was pulled out of the river. #2 she's huge and creepy #3 she's HUGE and CREEPY. but i keep going back.

Typical Nordeast bar but excellent people watching bc you have old NE versus new NE. I mean all walks of life in this great city. Trash, yuppies, bikers, straight, and gay. Add in truly excellent bar food and what more could a person want? I usually get an appetizer (wings or pot stickers(now off menu)) and then the slow roasted beef sandwhich or chef salad or grilled cheese or burger. For brunch, I order biscuits and gravy with hash browns, ham and eggs. Magnificent spot!

I didn't have any food here, but the atmosphere and service were lacking. We arrived and waited for a waitress to serve us drinks for 25 minutes. The music was so loud we couldn't hear each other speak. We ordered one pitcher of stella and one rail drink and the cost was $29.75 without any explanation of the cost of items. With Bulldog across the street with lower prices, better atmosphere, and a better beer and cocktail selection, I wouldn't come here again.

I looooooove their tuna sandwich here. it never fails! Love their fries too. My coworkers love the turkey burgers here, it's supposedly what they're famous for. I highly recommend this place. Service isn't shabby at all. What more can you want?

The wait and bar staff were very nice. The food was OK. I ordered enchiladas. Okay, I know I shouldn't have ordered this where the place primarily serves bar food but I felt somewhat reassured when the waitress said "GREAT choice!" Got the enchiladas. The were basically soaked in a cheesy, tomato-y sauce in a small bowl. But the problem was that it was so bland. I honestly thought my taste buds were gone because I couldn't believe how bland they were. However, I'm definitely willing to give it another try. The bar is located in NE... a very nice neighborhood bar. They have a small patio. The inside has a giant statue of a woman on the wall which I thought was neat.

    1. One Grain Belt and one shot of Jameson is $7.50. So with tip it is ten. That is awesome. These are not exactly downtown or uptown prices. Furhter, their was no downtown or uptown attitude. That is pretty cool too. 2. They played Modest Mouse for a good part of the night. That is not just awesome, that is absolutely fricken fantastic. None of the new tripe either, the good 90's stuff. BTW, we serve Summit to tourists, we are more than happy to not share Grain Belt with any non Minnesotans. More for us. Just to clarify, The Bulldog NE is in Nordeast, The Terminal is in Nordeast. Nyes and Whiteys are technically in South East. In all reality all four are considered St. Anthony and Main. Psycho Suzis and Mayslacks are in Nordeast. Sure, the little apple is not Cehlsea or SoHo, but there are differences. Like you can make fun of critics that just moved to New York in Nordeast with real restaurant people and really laugh about how said critics are perceived at the street level by people who actually work in the business. So i guess it doesn't really matter which side of Hennepin a good bar is on, so long as people understand that there is more of a scene here than some people think. And more of a good scene than some so called critics who have a blatant conflict of interest with their advertisers give credit for. Snicker snicker.

I only came here for drinks but I heard that their sandwich menu is huge. Based solely on the bar scene this place gets 2 stars. The drinks were nothing special but ill have to come back and try the burgers. Now that Grandma's closed down this is the only saloon styled bar in town that I know of. And apparently, like Grandma's, this is a college hang out. Weird, I didn't think college students came to NE . . . Went back to get a burger, it was average but not the worst burger in town, ill bump my rating to three stars.

Great bar, great staff. Love the quasadilla that had seafodd in it. It's been a while but I remember it was really goood!!! I think it was the one thing I always had when I went there. This is just a good place to go to get out of the uptown and DT scene and have some drinks and something to eat. I always had a good time @ Whitey's!!!

Met a friend for a "business" lunch at Whiteys and loved every minute of it. I ordered myself a delicious marinated mushroom appetizer and a cup of homemade cream of asparagus soup. The mushroom appetizer arrived in an adorable martini glass with a selection giant croutons ("grilled bread") to transport the marinated goodness to my mouth. The soup was also amazing and full of flavor. Gosh...I want to go back right now and eat some more soup :)

Whitey's treated me mighty kind in my days at Aveda. Grainbelt on tap is huge plus. Damn good sandwiches and great bartenders. Some of the waitresses were a little lacking but they've got 3 or 4 that are on top of things. I guess the key there is to become a regular. Breakfast on the weedends are absolute money. Saturday's I would walk in the door and the bartender, Jordan, would yell "B&G!" (Biscuits & Gravy). Now I'm a big fan of the B&G, a B&G connoisseur if you will, and they got some damn fine merchandise. Delicious slow cooked roast beef if you can't catch the B'fast on the weekends.

This is a good place of happy hour with friends or watching some sports. The appetizers are really, really good and the drink prices are on par with most neighborhood taverns. FYI...sometimes it is a little tricky to find parking in this area.

Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal.

also, when we went to leave - the manager came running outside after us & announced that we still hadn't paid our bill.

The food is ok, nothing to write home about, but it's solid bar food none the less. I seem to be ending p here regularly but with no desire to do so.

The bartenders were excellent. They make some good strong drinks, are pretty cute and great at conversating...which shouldn't be a hard thing to find in a bartender but for some reason it is. I will surely be back to drink and have some food.

Ever.

If you're thinking of stopping here just do it- it's worth it.

there's nothing incredible about Whitey's, it's some good bar food and a decent price. never too packed, so a great alternative to bulldog if you're not a fan of crowds.

Good stuff.

If you're thinking of stopping here just do it- it's worth it.

there's nothing incredible about Whitey's, it's some good bar food and a decent price. never too packed, so a great alternative to bulldog if you're not a fan of crowds.

Good stuff.

Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal.

also, when we went to leave - the manager came running outside after us & announced that we still hadn't paid our bill.

Recently was back and much more pleased! I think being tucked inside their cozy bar on a wintery day made my heart much happier. Had another greyhound and it was what I had expected the first time: happiness exploded in my mouth. Well, not really exploded, as it's more of a sipping thing..... but you get it.

  • Glen S.

It's a solid neighborhood bar with better than average food. Nothing really outstanding but it's comfortable and lacks douchbaggy pretention. A good place for a couple of beers or drinks. Oh, and very good fresh squeezed juice.

  • Lindsay K.

Ever.
