Greek Cuisine
Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health. Greeks also made different type of wines from the best quality of grapes fermented in controlled environment.
Today, you can find hundreds of restaurants offering authentic Greek food or popularly termed as Mediterranean cuisine in New York city alone. People wait in line to taste the exotic Greek dishes like saganaki, taramasalata, souvlaki, loukoumades, spanakopita, moussaka, and many more. One thing which most people like about these authentic Greek dishes is abundant use of lemon juice, olive oil, fresh rosemary and sea salt. A smart mix of few ingredients can virtually take you on the pebble streets of beautiful city of Greece.
For those who don't have time to enjoy fine dining should try tasting the famous souvlaki with pita which is type of meat dish, also a trademark Greek fast food. For those who are vegetarian, or vegan can try different versions of Greek Salad. So, if you wish to enjoy a hearty yet healthy meal that tastes divine then try dining at the best Greek restaurant in your city. Greek cuisine not only tastes good but also help maintain your body in a natural way through healthy diet.

Food Everything here is really good. I've tried just about everything there and there isn't anything I dislike. My coworkers and I go there all the time Location & Parking This is right in the middle of Warehouse District, so parking is usually only available at a garage. However, if you happen to work nearby then it's worth walking there for lunch Settings There are a few table available, but during lunch time it's usually filled Service Although it's always busy doing lunch, the line moves quickly Price Average Verdict Always go back

This is an awesome little joint near 5th and Hennepin. When I say litle, I mean little, but they maximize the space they are in with the tables in close. Showing up at noon means there is a line. Get with the drill because it is pretty much a one way circle through the eating area. People seemed to be ordering up the Gyro salad, which looked yummy and huge, but I stuck with the gyro sandwich. Nice portion and good spice. A definite return trip is needed.
(4)Nikky B.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! Fantastic gyros, the platter is amazing, hummus and salads are superb! Tiny place with big flavor. Don't let the line fool you - it goes quick. The two guys who work there just make me smile every time I go in. Definitely worth the trip.
(5)Jim C.
Grabbed lunch here last week. Had the veggie pita hummus sandwich. The food is prepared w/ fresh ingredients to your order. We chose to eat in. It was a bit cramped given the small space and booming lunch crowd, but not obnoxiously so. The food was great and a lot of people grabbed it "to go".
(5)Chaz H.
Great Gyro Platter, great everything! I haven't had anything at Trieste that has been outstanding. But get there early, because it gets busy.
(5)Erin C.
The hummus is tangy, the dolmades are ooooh so satisfying, and the Grecian charm is irresistible! You cannot go wrong with this excellent lunch spot. This small deli serves the freshest, most delicious Greek food in downtown MPLS.
(5)Megan W.
I wish I could give the Trieste Cafe six stars. Their Greek food is incredibly fast, incredibly fresh, and served by incredibly cute old Greek men. I had the Gyro and Salad Combo today, which included pasta salad and a gyro almost as big as my body for $8. So delicious.
(5)Elizabeth U.
Seriously BEST greek I have EVER HAD!! This local hot, secret spot is a MUST!!
(5)Andrew v.
Trieste Cafe is simply the best Greek lunch destination in Minneapolis. I stop in for lunch on a regular basis and have had nothing short of amazing food every time. The gyros plate with rice is my favorite, with tender meat, flavorful rice, and fresh pita bread. If you're in downtown Minneapolis for lunch, definitely check this place out.
(5)Johanna C.
got the $7 gyro plate for lunch and it was delicious! feels like a very authentic greek place & they cut the salad fresh right in front of you after you order. the white sauce is the highlight of the plate :p
(4)Kent M.
Awesome Greek food. They give you a large portion and make it fresh right in front of you while you wait. The meat is fantastic, the pita's are fresh, and if you don't get the hummus you are missing out. I used to work downtown and it was a every week thing to go get lunch here. I now work in the suburbs and always make a point to eat lunch here when ever I get downtown.
(5)Eric G.
My favorite place in the skyway! Gyros Greek salad. You either love it or you're wrong...
(5)K T.
Amazing. Everything is fresh and delicious!!!
(5)Dan S.
This place has excellent greek gyro salads. Everything is cut, hand-torn, and seasoned right in front of you. Big portions too, definitely will not leave hungry. Perfect if your downtown, located in the Lumber Exchange Building.
(4)Eduardo M.
This place really delivers on authentic gyros. I went in expecting small place, with homemade food and that's exactly what I got. The place screams mom and pop shop, with the two owners the only staff at this place. I got the gyro combo for lunch , which included awesome hummus gyro meat tztazikibsauce and pita bread + wait there's more. As part of the combo, I also got a dolmade (veggie wrap) and the samosa looking spinach. 5/5 starts for sure , you will not be dissapointed. I recommend you go for lunch , and around 1130 am, before the rush
(5)Cindy W.
Good food, fresh food! The hummus is really fresh (non-sabra/packaged...) and their gyro meat is super tender. I loved their tatziki sauce! The portions are also really, really large, so for $11 you do get a lot but if you're going for smaller portions, I'd pick another place for lunch. The guys behind the counter are also really nice and they prepare your food pretty quickly. I love that they chop the vegetables in front of you. It gives you an authentic experience. Wished they had baklava though...
(5)Richard H.
The food here is delicious! Handmade everyday so everything is guaranteed to be fresh. The gyro was hearty and filled me up. There was plenty of sauce as well so be careful if you are in business clothes. It might be a better call to get a boxed combo. I also had the Pesto pasta salad and it was fantastic! The restaurant is a little small, but the line is worth the wait.
(4)Eduardo S.
Great polite owners and the food, my my... Exquisite! The price was as described $* would definitely recommend it!
(5)Pedro T.
Really good food for a great value. I tried the Gyros salad and it was delicious! The place itself is also cozy and nice. Great place for having lunch!
(5)Michael Z.
One of the hidden gems in the skyway. It's a great spot for lunch if you're looking to get fresh, authentic Greek food. And I'm not kidding when I say fresh: they chop up all the ingredients for your salad, wrap, etc. right in front of you. It's kind of like lunch and a show as you see lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions flying up from the cutting board. The place is family-owned and seems to have been there forever as they definitely have the service humming at an efficient rate. The lines can get long, but they move quickly. My favorite is the Gyros Greek Salad, which comes with gyros meat and a salad with all the fixings including feta cheese, tzatziki sauce, and warm flatbread. It's a great deal considering all the food that you get. You'll be stuffed if you finish it all. The portion sizes do seem to have gotten smaller the last few times I've been, but it's still plenty that I'm not complaining.
(4)Camille L.
One of the coolest things about this place is that you can see your food being prepared right in front by the cashier. Check out my yelp video! I ordered the gyro platter with hummus, pita and salad which was insanely large. I had leftovers too! This place is pretty small and doesn't have outdoor seating but it's one of the best places for Greek food in downtown. It's easy to walk here through the skyways too and it's right next to the Pourhouse. This is the place to come if you want a lot of food and you will be nice and full until the end of your work day!
(4)Nicole P.
This lunch hot spot is a place I will definitely be returning to! The food is fresh and made to order. Best gyro meat I've ever tasted. The food platters are like works of art...seriously. Food is amazing.
(5)Michelle F.
If you love Greek and mediterranean food, go here. It's everything it needs to be. Probably the best gyro I've had in town, excellent falafel, excellent hummos, great salad acompaniment, fantastic tabouli. Just eat here and be happy. PS, word to the wise: Get the stuffed grape leaves "to go" and eat them when they've had time to warm up. i'm sure storing them chilled in the shop is much better for freshness, but stuffed grape leaves are much, much tastier when they are at room temperature (or a little warmer, mmmm)
(5)Sara J.
I am thankful that I don't work closer to Trieste Cafe, I know that I wouldn't have enough self control to stay away and neither my waistline nor my pocketbook could handle my obsession with this place. It is small and the line is always pretty long, if you are in a rush this is not the place to go. Give yourself plenty of time to get your food and savor it, a little extra to come out of your food coma wouldn't hurt. The gyro salad is my go to dish. It is made in front of you with plenty of freshly cut vegetables then topped with warm pita, gyro meat and feta, I highly recommend it. I also particularly love their lemonade and baklava, unfortunately I haven't had much experience with the rest of the menu but I would be willing to bet that its great. Go now, it's great!
(5)Jon L.
I try and avoid using the term "hole in the wall" so I will use "tunnel system in the wall" (TSITW). This small store is run by two men that have seemingly perfected the art of gyros and falafel. As most others mention here, your food is made right in front of you- chopped, diced and assembled right in front of your face. The freshness definitely added to its overall mystique. While the wait time can be a bit long, the $10.50 gets you a platter of falafel or gyro and I would definitely recommend it.
(4)Max F.
The food here is so fresh and so delicious! The two men that work here are extremely friendly and service has always been great here. I absolutely loveee their gyro sandwiches, they are filled to the brim with tender meat! I would eat here everyday if possible.
(5)Eva B.
Hands down the best lunch spot in all of Minneapolis! All of the food looks so delicious every time I go.. I just have a hard time resisting the Gyros Greek Salad for fear that I'll miss it too much! The space is so bright and clean. Run by 2 gentleman and as authentic greek cuisine as you can get! Fresh cut vegetables for each order. Absolutely delicious, can't say it enough! I have never had anything but a great experience there. If you're heading there at noon, be prepared for a bit of a line. And if you really want to hit it home.. I dare you to try the baklava!
(5)Matt M.
Trieste, I can't stop thinking about you. Ever since I switched office buildings, I'm no longer close enough to suggest you for lunch 24/7. The farther we grow apart, the greater my love is. It's just like The Notebook. The lunch combo is fresh and amazing and entirely worth the extra skyway laps you may have to take to burn off those huge portions. Lamb meat with tzatziki, fresh Greek salad, and probably the best hummus and pita I can think of in the Twin Cities. I love you so much. If you're a bird, I'm a bird. Never leave me.
(5)Craig P.
The best gyros in downtown Minneapolis! The same two guys are there everyday. One takes orders and handles cash and drinks, the other cooks everything. It is surprisingly efficient. Even if there is a long line, it's worth the wait. The food is delicious. I'm not a salad guy but the side salads are pretty good. The prices are great too.
(5)Doug D.
The best food in town! Every meal is handmade as its ordered. Extremely fresh and delicious. You won't be disappointed!
(5)Tanya L.
Great lunch spot! Stopped by here looking for lunch on the way to the convention center. I had the gyro and pasta salad meal, and the gyro was great! The portions are hefty and the spices in the meat were excellent. The pasta salad was a little oregano-y for my taste, but there were 3 or 4 different pasta salad options so I probably just chose the wrong one for me. Certainly recommended for fast, fresh Greek fare!
(4)Zach B.
Ahh, I love places like this. Very similar to one of my favorite places in Madison, WI (Mediterranean Cafe). Simple, great tasting mediterranean/Middle-Eastern cuisine. I work on 6th St., so I come here for lunch quite often. Pretty sure everything's under $10, so that automatically gives it bonus points for being a cheap, non-Skyway place. I usually order either the gyro combo with salad or falafel combo with salad. Can't go wrong either way. You get a big plate of nicely-dressed salad greens, a delicious hummus, pita bread, and either gyro meat or falafel balls. I guess I'm not sure if they're called balls, but they're shaped like them. So I'm going with balls. Everything is super well-seasoned and delicious. They'll even throw in something extra on the plate, whatever they have at the time. Lately it's been a spinach-filled hot-pocket like thing. Not a ton of seating inside, and the line gets pretty long over lunch hour. There's a max of two people working at any given time, so it's not the fastest turnaround. But again, it's a small place in general. Overall, Trieste Cafe is no frills, delicious lunch fare.
(5)Andy W.
Amazing food that's freshly prepared in front of you by a dude who really knows what he's doing. The atmosphere is a perfect compliment to the food: intimate, authentic, and varied. Everything served here is super legit. Try their lemonade. Man, I forgot what real lemonade tasted like. Oh yeah: the portions are extremely generous and the prices are extremely reasonable (~$9 for an enormous plate of fresh food).

I feel bad that I have put of going to Trieste (10 S. 5th St) in downtown Minneapolis for two years. I've known about this place ever since I first moved to the Cities and either walk or drive by this location on a daily basis and work within a few blocks and yet, I had not once stopped in here to grab a bite to eat until this afternoon. I shouldn't have waited. My experience was fantastic. I went with a co-worker who had been plugging this place for quite sometime now. She kept telling me how fabulous their gyro (lamb meat, tzatziki sauce and onions in pita bread) and Greek salad are for weeks. So, after an invite today I finally took her up on the offer and let me tell you - absolutely NOT disappointed. The food, atmosphere and service were great. The place was busy, yet our food came out quickly. Our server was very friendly and helpful explaining menu items to those of us who come from rural Iowa and are not familiar with Greek cuisine. The gyro was wonderful and the side of hummus was to die for. All I can say is this - if you haven't experienced Trieste for yourself you should definitely do so... tonight if possible. It really is that good.
(5)Mariah B.
The worst part of Trieste is the food coma that will inevitably occur after I finish an entire gyro combo w/ salad. I write this as I am hunched over in my cube completely satisfied for under $10! FRESH ingredients, perfectly spiced gyros and great service (I feel bad for the guy who prepares the food as I always tell "NO SAUCE" while he is prepping my meal). I typically make it here once a month with my team and it has not once been less than amazing. Easily my favorite place to get lunch downtown despite its close proximity to the Pourhouse *shudders* I'm also a big fan of the falafel and the lemonade. Honestly, you can't go wrong there, I just wish there was more seating, but I do like the intimacy.
(5)Mike S.
Loaded! That sums up the gyro platter. It is ever so gently put together, literally piece by piece of fresh lettuce. If I lived or worked near by I would make this a regular spot for sure. It is small but simple and quiant. The only reason I shaved off a star is because the lamb meat is not freshly shaved off a rotating spit. To shave or not to shave, I guess thats not really a question....
(4)Laarni S.
HOLY CRAP! THIS IS AWESOME! and i don't write reviews. this actually made me go through all the tedious work of signing up and giving out my email and all. all because it's definitely excellent for the price and even better for the taste.
(5)Rebecca A.
I was introduced to Trieste Café earlier this week and was amazed at the amount of food you get for under $10. I got the gyro combo platter w/salad and ate it all. Best lunch food comma I've had in a while.
(5)Cameron D.
Delicious greek food at the edge of the skyway. Get the gyros pate with rice and save room for a piece of baklava!
(4)Chad K.
Love this place! Get the gyro plate with rice or the gyro plate with salad, but either way expect a ton of delicious food!
(5)Jason T.
Oh wow, the Greek Gyros Salad is out of this world. Presentation wise is uninviting but take a bite of the juicy and you'd be blown away. A fresh lemon is squeezed onto the green, with a healthy does of sour cream and jalapeno. Everything for $8.50. YUmmmm! The fresh lemonade was too sweet for my liking but I won't complain. Who the hell goes to a greek place for lemonade anyway.. A definite must try!
(5)Chris L.
Best Greek downtown and in the regular rotation. Big minus is seating, which runs out quickly. So fast that I never try to come here if it's Noon or later. But if you get there, amazing value proposition -- get the Gyro Plate with Rice (the combo costs more and you won't need more food). But whatever you get, you'll appreciate two guys working their tails off to give you a great food experience for the price. Fresh salads as you watch him cut the ingredients. Yum!
(4)Aimee N.
I tried this place for the first time last Friday with my co-worker and I am a big fan! We normally go to the Greek Place since it is so close to our office, but I will walk to Trieste Cafe from now on. The food was really good and the portions were huge! Reasonable price and this place gets packed during lunch hour so go early! I had the Gyro combo plate with greek salad and I was so full by the end. It satisfied my mediterranean food craving for sure. It comes with a generous helping of gyro meat, big greek salad, hummus and pita bread. Everything on that plate was delicious. I have been craving it ever since!
(5)K C.
I work like 10 blocks from this place and I beg my stupid co-workers to go here almost every day, and they don't - "too far," "too far," and "too far." It is great. I always order the spanokopita (sp) and it is delish. My guest always orders the gyro salad and is never disappointed.
(5)LeAnn K.
Incredibly fresh authentic Greek food in such an unassuming place. The Garlic spread with the pita wedges is incredible!!!
(5)David W.
Best Greek in the area! Food is fantastic and filling at a decent price. Line will be bad during lunch rush, but watching your plate chopped and squeezed together at lightening pace is worth the wait.
(4)Anna H.
The food here is truly fantastic. You can't go wrong. I just wish they were open longer so I could go there for dinner, too!
(5)Jens L.
Great service, beautiful tiled floors. Food OK. Could benefit from a little re-model.
(3)Dina S.
My fav is the gyro combo plate! The owner Omar is the best and cooks all the food fresh right in front of you! Get there early as lines are out the door by noon!
(5)Peter A.
My favorite lunch joint. Always busy during lunchtime, but the guys are fast and the food is worth it. Get Gyro with Rice and Hummus. Love this place.
(5)Kate D.
Excellent place for fresh and flavorful Mediterranean food. It is fairly easy to find and when you step inside, it is clean, casual and the staff is friendly. It is (almost) an open kitchen and you can see your meal being thrown together as you wait. I had the Gyro combo with salad and I was really happy. The serving size is huge but you will finish it because it is so delicious. There is a generous serving of every ingredient: beef, onion, cucumber, tomatoes, feta cheese, herbs and spices, lemon juice and olive oil that comes together in a perfect blend. On the side are a big dollop of hummus and 6 triangles of pita bread. It will fill you up but won't leave you with an overly bloated belly. My meal, with a drink, amounted to $10.50. Very good value for money. There are a good amount of seats inside, although space is a little tight. I came for lunch and some people took their food to go. I came in earlier so that I was able to get a good look at the space and pick where I wanted to sit. Come here for lunch! Your tummy will thank you. =)
(5)Michael G.
Great Food, Great Service. What actually inspired me to make this rating was a disappointing trip to a place nearby. I'm making it a point to stop back in soon!
(5)Heather L.
Amazing food. Never disappoints. All the salads are chopped and assembled to order right behind the counter. Everything is always fresh - and delicious. I really can't go anywhere else for lunch now because nothing is better than Trieste. I always get the "chicken combo" - it's $9.50 for greek salad (romaine, tomatoes, olives, feta, red onion), a chicken breast, pita and hummus. I can rarely finish it all at once, but it seems healthy and I don't feel bad after eating it. It gets busy during lunch, but the line moves fast.
(5)John M.
I really like this place. The staff, which is just 2 guys, really like their job and are damn good at it. Everything on the menu is great and everything is very fast. If there's a long line, you might have to wait a bit, but nothing too long. The sandwiches are HUGE for the price and every little ingredient in them are delicious. When it gets packed, it's a hard place to find a seat as it's a hole in the wall, but if you're looking for a great sandwich or gyro, this has got to be the best in town. And their strawberry lemonade is amazing!
(5)David C.
So fresh and delicious, incredible gyros. Has been around for years and family owned. Love it! The lines are long for a good reason.
(5)Julianne Z.
Great lunch place that is pretty fast despite the line! THe portions are huge and I cannot finish all of it. I got the mediterranean combo which was gyro meat, a greek salad and hummus and pita and it was huge! THe salad is super fresh and has tons of feta and is super crisp. The hummus is freshly made and the gyro meat is thinly sliced. Really great Mediterranean food and two guys run it, so you can taste the love!
(4)Chris H.
This place is a dive that has decent food. I don't quite understand the 4 stars. Is it because Minneapolis doesn't know what a good deli is really like? I had a pastrami sandwich and while it was good, it wasn't great...which is what is necessary for 4 stars or more. The person with me had the chicken plate and the chicken was dry. Also, when I say it is a dive...I mean a real dive. Great character...but it wasn't kept clean.
(3)Carolyn A.
Oh...em...gee! After all the hype, this place is for real. Yeah, it's not in the skyway and yeah, there's usually a line. But wow: is it worth it. I visited Trieste this week and got a Greek salad and a small order of dolmades. The dolmades were delicious and had lots of lemony flavor. The Greek salad had a perfect ratio of vegetables to cheese to dressing and it came with stacks of pita bread on the side. I went with a large group and everyone else's food looked fantastic as well. Next time, I will save room for the gigantic pieces of baklava. They looked amazing. Added bonus: I was totally captivated by witnessing the food prep behind the counter while I was waiting for my food. It was like a performance.
(5)William C.
Worth the wait and the travel time from work! This place is not a hole in the wall, but sort of is a hole in the wall. I went there for lunch with my coworkers on a Thursday. We waited in line for about 15 minutes and it's definitely WORTH the wait. When we got to the front of the line, the reason why we waited so long became very apparent; the entire operation was run by two guys (I'm assuming they own the place). One guy takes the orders and handles money, the other guy creates all the orders on the fly. I ordered the Gyro Combo with Salad and a soda. The portion was BIG. Very fresh ingredients, warm Gyro meat and sharp tasting toppings. All I did was add a little spice to kick things up a bit. They also had a good assortment of sides and desserts, but I didn't get any since it was my first time there. I'll definitely get those on my next visit!
(4)Kurt M.
The best gyro plate in town. I went with the greek salad as my side well and was not disappointed. Well worth the little wait we had at lunch. I highly recommend this place!
(5)Jason K.
My buddy and I were out on our biweekly new restaurant lunch run and we decided to head to the Trieste. I have heard wondrous things about this place. How it is run by two guys behind the counter and there is minimal seating and usually a long line. We left at 11 to beat the lunch rush and we were able to walk right up to the counter. Now it was a hot summer day, and the back counter area could have used some major air conditioning. I almost started sweating instantly (The seating area was just fine though) My friend ordered a gyro sandwich, so I decided to follow. I got a Diet Coke as well, and that came to $8. Maybe a buck too high, but it also comes with a small bag of chips. The sandwich is huge and the filling is just pouring out of it with a big glop of a thatziki sauce on top. I tried to take a bite out of he behemoth, but was pretty unsuccessful, I turned to just eating the schwarma with the fresh lettuce and tomatoes and sauce with a fork. The meat was a wonderful mix of lamb and beef. Perfectly spiced. The sauce wasn't too spicy, just creamy with a slight amount of piquant. Very tasty. The bread was a little spongy in a good way, and it seemed very fresh. It was a lot of food, with lots of meat. I can see why this place is so popular. Lots of laughs and talk, we left after about half an hour to let our gigantic pita style sandwich digest.
(4)Laura G.
As a tourist, I was so excited to find this treasure of a restaurant... The food was amazing, and the staff was super friendly. A quick lunch atmosphere.
(5)S W.
I don't want to pee in anyone's wheaties, and I don't want to hate on a well-run institution that everyone should definitely go to. BUT - with competitors that MAKE shawrma popping up here and there (and I know, I know it's not the SAME as gyros) it's hard to five-star a joint that uses Kronos. ...Which everyone does. I'm reasonably sure this is Kronos, anyway - I could be wrong, but if it tastes like gyro and it's good, it's Kronos. If it tastes like gyro and it's horrible it's Greek Delight. It's like the vienna beef or hebrew national hotdog, you will definitely find some people who are artists with it, and others who are not. Trieste knows what they're doing and it's above par. If you're going to stake lunch downtown on one place using Kronos meat, this is the one, for sure.
(3)Mike G.
Great place. Fresh Mediterranean food. The salad is chopped right in front of you. The portion is large. The decor is nothing special, Excellent spot for lunch. The bread isn't what it should be. Shawerma seems like it came from an over rather from a genuine rotating thing so it's not crispy and frankly is not very tasty. Still only removing one star as other dishes are great and service is excellent.
(4)Nazgul W.
Very solid lunch spot; good hoagies and baklava, everything done up to order. They cut up fresh veggies for the sandwiches and salads and have fresh-squeezed lemonade and great pasta salads. If you go with one of the daily specials you'll easily spend under $10 but if you add a bunch of things separately, it can get a little spendy. The gyro plate with rice is a real winner and a great value. A cozy place with friendly people. Under-rated and somewhat under-appreciated, since it's off the beaten skyway paths.
(4)Courtney P.
Overall good experience. The food was made fresh in front of you. It was very popular when we went so we waited in line for a while since there seemed to be only 2 men working. The place is very small, maybe 10 tables. Everything had huge portions. I could only finish about half of my meal. Overall I would recommend this place. Only reasons I didn't give it a 5 was: 1. the lack of space to move around in- so it was a little awkward trying to get at tables or utensils. 2. Not THE BEST Greek I've ever had, but the flood overall was very good and savory.
(4)Catherine P.
When I was a little kid, my dad had an office above the Trieste Cafe and would take us there (we called it - and still do - "Omar's") when we would visit him downtown. Now, working downtown and returning as an adult, it's just as good as I remember (though, to be honest, as a kid I didn't even realize it was a greek deli because I never set my sights any further than the ham hero). I admit, I still can't review Trieste for the acclaimed greek goodies - I can't order anything but the ham with everything. It is the best sandwich downtown. (Do have a stick of gum on hand for the garlicky aftermath!)
(5)John L.
Yeah, that's right. Five stars. For the price - around 7 or 8 bucks - it is very difficult to beat the Trieste's primary offering, i.e. Gyro plate with rice. Decent vegetables, a warm pita in the side, and hot sauce on every table. Generally speaking yes there may be better specimens of some of the food offered, but not at the same price. Even the coffee. Damn fine dollar cup of coffee. Salads also do not suck. Notable is the complete absence of iceberg lettuce. Yes, you get the real stuff. Romaine, and not bad romaine either. Chicken used on salad with chicken appears to be actual chicken breast, not vaguely chicken colored white protein from freezerville. Highly recommended. Caveat: get here early or late. They are open relatively late, too. Place is tiny and gets PACKED during peak times.

I was walking by the Lumber Exchange yesterday and the smell of Greek food cooking sort of drew me in, it has a tendency to do that. I wasn't even considering Greek as it's usually something that I crave more in the Summer than the Fall. That's one of the great things about dining in Central Downtown before 5:PM, there are so many choices that you're never really commited to any specific place, you just come upon a neat looking and nice smelling cafe and you just go with it. While I usually order either a Gyro combo or a Pastrami Hoagie (make sure to ask for no mayo on their hoagies if you don't wan't it), today I tried the Gyro Salad and their HOMEMADE LEMONADE. Whoa was this a great tasting meal, and it was a huge portion. To start with the always friendly Greek guy sliced the vegetables right there on the kitchen counter after he took my order, these were some of the freshest veggies I've yet had in a restaraunt. Then the always amazing Gyro meat was loaded with fresh hot pita slices, slices of romaine lettuce that were sliced on the spot, red onions, peppers, feta, olives and two kinds of creamy sauces on the side. As I said it was humongous, and everything was extremely fresh and delicious. The lemonade is worth the trip in itself as it was incredibly good and refreshing. Last of all since this place is always packed whenever I've been here for lunch I've never got to sit wherever I wanted, but since it was later in the afternoon and many tables were available I was able to sit in a table near the lobby entrance to the Cafe. This was an amazing corner to dine in as you have all these great views of the elaborate marble in the Lumber Exchange, and you're looking out these really deep windows with visible exterior sandstone. I'm telling ya you'd swear you were somewhere in Manhattan.

Very nice atmosphere, very tender meat in the gyros, very generous portions. I find that their gyros are large enough for two people to get full on. I will certainly return here ^^.

YES! YES! YES! This tiny place is home to the best gyro in the city! I always get the gyros salad (simply because pita is just not my thing). It's huge, delicious and LOADED with everything you want! There is one guy standing in "back" chopping away, throwing everything you order together as fast as you can imagine. Freshly squeezed lemon, freshly chopped veggies, tons of gyro meat.... how can you go wrong? If you go during the lunch hour, you will wait in a deceptively long line (only looks long because the place is small). I recommend getting your food to-go because seating is at a premium. Even if you decide to dine in, expect your plate of food to take up all the space on the table. You will not regret the $5-10 you spend because it will be the best $5-10 you spend on lunch downtown. Easily.

Oh boy! That gyro I ate there was awesome! Probably a top two in Mpls for gyros. Now, I must go back for some of the other menu items.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. If you want a fresh tabouli, check it out. If you want a healthy-ish gyro salad, check it out. If you want to wreak like lamb meat all day, check it out. The size of the joint is awkward, which makes the line (there is a line everytime I've been there) snake around people's tables, but its a small price to pay for that sweet, sweet greek food. Opa! x 100

Wonderful! The food is amazing and quite inexpensive. It's delicious and made right in front of you. You can tell everyone knows it's good because it's packed all of the time. Spectacularly simple gyros. Highly highly highly recommend this place

Trieste Cafe is one of the only places to get falafel in downtown Minneapolis. For that reason alone it holds value and importance. The space itself is a small, quaint lunch spot in the historic Lumber Exchange building on the corner of 5th and Hennepin. I had a falafel sandwich ($6.50 with tax) which was decent, though it was overstuffed with lettuce and the falafel didn't have enough flavor on its own. But it mixed well with the tomato and tahini and the pita was soft and good. The falafel was not made fresh, however. It was pre-made and then put into some kind of microwave//toaster combination and reheated, which was kind of disappointing, but not a deal-breaker (not for me, anyway). The service is fast and friendly and the owner/sole employee is a really nice, earnest fellow. If I were to work downtown, I would probably stop by Trieste Cafe fairly often, as it's affordable and also has those other standard vegan Middle Eastern foods, hummus, baba ganouje and tabouli. Trieste doesn't have the best falafel in the Twin Cities (that title belongs to Mim's in St. Paul), but it's good enough for downtown.

This is all you need to know: 1. I'm 100% Greek 2. I'm a food snob 3. This place exceeded all my expectations! Fresh authentic massive portions and inexpensive. Gyro meat is usually overly processed and tough their meat was so tender even when I went back 4 hours later to finish my leftovers it was fantastic! Highly recommend: gyro platter with rice-soft pita ( doubt it's Krinos bc I hate Krinos) Greek salad at least 2 cups of rice seasoned with cinnamon and pepper and ridiculous portion of meat for under $7! Spinach pies are legit! Bummer: only opened weekdays til 3pm

Very fresh food. The salads are chopped/made from scratch right infront of you (greens, tomatoes, onions) and dressed with lemon juice, squeezed fresh right on top of the freshly chopped vegetables. Giro is soft and delicious, spanakopita is fresh, a little bland, but excellent when topped with some pepers from the salad. The owners are very friendly, I was sitting opposite the register/kitchen, and the smiles never left their faces. I left stuffed and happy and will surely be back! :)

If you can taste the garlic on your breath 4 hours after lunch, I'd say that means you had some scrumptious hummus at Trieste. Trieste has the best greek/mediterranian lunchy eats in Minneapolis. It's too bad they are only open for lunch- I would grab takeout from there in a heartbeat. I like to get their Falafel platter- you get a couple falafel balls, a giant greek salad, a giant glob of hummus, and a few pieces of pita bread. It's about $8, and TOTALLY worth it. Try their baklava for dessert, you wont be disappointed. The downside of Trieste: it's so popular, there's usually a line out the door at lunchtime. I understand, tho- the two guys behind the counter manage to serve everyone pretty rapidly. I don't think you could fit three people back there!

I'm a huge fan of this place. Everything I've had has been fresh and delicious and they guys who run it (the owners?) are really nice. I used to only order the gyro plate with rice - it is SO GOOD! But it's a bit heavy for lunch. I have switched lately to the hummus plate with tabbouleh. Their hummus is really delicious and tangy and their tabbouleh is one of the best I've had! I think this is some of the best, most reasonably priced food in downtown.

This place is, bar none, the best 'ethnic' place downtown. The food is fast, fresh, visually attractive, and very inexpensive. I usually get the gyro combo with olive oil salad and a meat pie. Only $10 with a can of coke. Could easily be twice that. The thing I really love about this place is that it feels like a Greek joint. I grew up in the Ohio Vally, and most Euro-ethnic restaurants had an ethnic-American feel to them. Pizza places with brick walls, fat guys making food, and black and white pictures all over the place. German places with soccer on TV, fat ladies serving food, and a few great beers. You walk into this place, and it feel Greek. It's a little small and cramped. The two guys who run the place both look of Mediterranean dissent. It's in the Lumber Exchange, which gives it a bit of old world feel, too. This is a pretty low key place serving high quality food. You could go for that reason alone and it'd be worth your time. the only real complaint I have is that the seating is a little cramped, and on one or two occasions there were no open seats during the lunch rush.

These Gyros rock. They load the pita with very fresh ingrediants and the meat tastes awesome! The owners are amazing people and no matter how many people are packed into the tiny place, I never feel grossed out. The baklava is pretty good but, the best thing to get would be the gyro and gyro greek salad. If you come by yourself to order for the whole office, except to wait. They will cover all of the single orders first.

Definitely my go-to lunch place downtown. I love the greek salad (either chicken or gyro). Can be a little on the spendy side for a quick-grab-to-eat-at-your-desk-lunch- $8-9 for the above, but super delicious and if you spring for the mixed plate the hummus is fantastic. The ingredients are all very fresh, piles of veggies that the owner chops away at for three hours mid-day with such speed that you worry about his fingers. Bonus, if you go after 1:00 or 1:30 after the rush and smile, the guys will often through in a piece of cake or spinach or meat pie. Yum.

Wow - best greek food I've had in the Twin Cities.

A little hard to find, but a fantastic place for a FRESH made meal. The chef literally cuts just enough lettuce, peppers, etc. for your dish. Plentiful and decently priced plates.
