I had work lunch at the Oak Grille because my contacts had never tried their legendary popovers. I had explained that this little hidden gem on the 12th floor of Macy's is not for the faint of heart. While less popular than its sunny cafeteria neighbor, Skyroom, the Oak Grill is fooling you if you think it's for old folks taking a break from their downtown shopping day. First off, it was quiet at the Oak Grill so we got right in, were seated immediately, and had a very attentive server. Their menu covers a wide variety of traditional fresh appetizers, soups and salads, and entrees. Oddly enough, once someone at our table ordered the chicken pot pie we were all sold! The popovers were as achy and delicious as I remembered, however I did miss the honey flavored whipped butter I remembered them serving it with last time. The pot pie was fresh and homemade, and about the right proportion to fill you up at lunchtime. Well this was a slightly heavier lunch then I would normally like, everything was really well prepared and delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant for client meetings, special events, and even larger group meals. They are very accommodating.

I had a lovely and delicious lunch at this place. They start each person at the table with their own popover and butter. They pretty much melt in your mouth since they are so good! I ordered the asiago crusted chicken which came with mashed potatoes and cooked zucchini, squash and tomatoes. It was large enough to feed two people so I took half of it home for dinner! I enjoyed the dish and recommend it. There were also some nice sounding salads and sandwiches to choose from that my co workers seemed to enjoy. It's pretty easy to get a table here during lunch hour but I would avoid this place during the macys flower shows and Christmas since it gets overly crowded.

My first time here. A large group of us gathered for lunch to celebrate a birthday in January. The setting and ambiance felt sort-of sedate, but in a calm, refined way. I tried their Bloody Mary, and thought it was alright. Having heard plenty over the years about their "infamous wild rice soup", I ordered a cup of it. Yes, it IS really good. If I go another time for lunch, I will order a bowl of that soup as my main course. We ordered a basket of popovers for everyone. I found them to be good, but not great (my Mom's homemade still beats all others in their lightness). I don't recall now whether it was the popover or the butter that was slightly sweet, but I would prefer a slight salty flavor over the sweetness. Our waiter service was fine, not remarkable.

The food was not great for the price paid. The highlight of the meal was the Yorkshire Pudding (bread) brought before the meal. Virtually no cocktail options and dessert (flourless chocolate cake) was bland.

Great Minneapolis gem. The service here is GREAT! My boyfriend and I try to go here at least once a week. The food is classic American. Meat loaf and pot pie. Oh, and I can't forget the famous popovers! I try something new every time I'm here, but the only thing I've had twice is the salmon and risotto. This isn't one of your trendy hot spots that come and go, this place is a part of Downtown Minneapolis history. There is never a wait or the need to make a reservation really. The crowd is older, but I prefer that over the rest of the downtown scene.

Went there tonight for Valentine's dinner. Had a pretty good 3-course meal: Caesar salad (boyfriend had wild rice soup), NY strip steak & chocolate mousse! Server was wonderful and friendly. Atmosphere is cozy. Not an extensive menu normally but would go again!

It is NOT often I am surprise but I was pleasantly surprise when I ate here for the 1st time. The service was outstanding. Love the old fashion decor and quiet setting. Here is the bottom line, it is on top of Macy's and I consider it as a 5 star restaurant! Yep, you get real utensils, fresh white table clothes, amazing service(free popovers), etc... Here is the amazing part - it has a 2 star price! You read that right. Personally, I considered it cheaper than TGIF and Chilis. You think you get free Popovers @ those places?! Absolutely not! Yes, their menu are pretty small, but...I like it that way! Why? Most good restaurants with a small menu make incredible food - TRUST me you will NOT be disappointed! I still can't believe it is on top of Macy's considering I don't usually buy anything from that store...

This is a hideaway in the busy Nicollet Mall Macy's during the weekly lunch rush. Go in and you'll feel calmed by the clubbishness of the dark interior and pampered by the linen table settings and great service. In doing old school supper club research, I've become an unintended fan of the popover. Here you get a warm popover--huge and done to perfection. They are often overdone or baked at too high of heat and really crunchy/dark on the outside and too doughy on the inside. This is definitely five-star served with a slightly sweetened honey butter. I had the advertised chef special - a BBQ crunch burger, which was nothing too special -- a hand-pattied burger with the requisite lettuce, tomato but with crushed potato chips. Sauce came on the side. The seasoned fries were good, but the homemade kitchen pickles were fantastic thin slices of vinegar-sweet-salty-vegetable goodness. Also had a most excellent cole slaw. Next time I will follow my Oak-Grille-experienced dining partner's suggestion and order one of their fantastic salads. She had a mandarin-orange chicken salad that looked fab, and next to me came a chicken avocado that I wished I'd ordered. Outside of the Oak Grille there a wonderful little exhibit on the history of Daytons-Marshall Fields-Macy's. Next to that is the Skyroom, which has a great view and looks like a nice step-up from cafeteria-style food. My friend has never been to the Skyroom either, so that's our next try. But we got BOGO lunch coupons at the Oak Grille, and also a had an loyalty card that she got two more punches on. So maybe not.

The salmon I tried is just delicious. Among top 5 salmon that I have ever had. This place a little hard to find though.

As a transplant from Chicago, I was excited that Macy's retained some of Marshall Field's best menu items. The chicken pot pie is so excellent. It's comfort food at its best. The popovers are tasty too! Feels like you're thrown back a good 40 years when you walk in. 4 stars rather than five because the hostesses are consistently surly. grrrr

I am very pleased with everything about this place. I first found this restaurant on restaurant.com . Would never have found it otherwise. Its really not that hard to get to. You do have to go through downtown, but I just enter in the Macy's parking ramp on 8th Street. The ramp is $5 after 5pm, but you receive a free parking voucher when you pay your bill after the meal. This restaurant is made for old people, its also never busy. I have come on a Thursday and Friday before and always get attended to fairly quickly. Pop overs are the reason to keep coming back: warm buttery, sweet, flaky bread. You can't beat it. My first visit I got the JAM burger. Basically just a bacon cheese burger but add the sweet tangy JAM sauce and the pretzel bun and it becomes awesome. Before the burger I had the french onion soup which is basically a meal in itself. Simply amazing. I could go on and on, but you should just see for yourself!

I went to a brunch with my Grandma here. They had fantastic popovers and salads. Nice place on the 12th floor. Perfect for a nice quiet lunch.

This place is a hidden gem among the down town eat spots. Located on the 12th floor of Macy's. Not the easiest place to get to but well worth it. I had the meat loaf and walleye strips for and app. Meatloaf was moist and the app was spot on. An unexpected delight was the pop overs accompanied by sweet whipped butter. Great way to start the meal.

What's not to love about a place that gives you free popovers with every meal and that is so old school women needed to be escorted by a male just to enter. Thankfully that rule no longer applies, but they kept the same decor! It looks like my grandmas basement and kind of smells like it, but the burger and pot pie are to die for. Pretzel buns, truffle oil mayo and homemade goodness make this a highly underrated lunch spot downtown.

The dark woods, fireplace and rich materials make this place feel cozy. It's a nice break from the bright lights and crazed shoppers in Macy's. Your meal starts out with delicious, melt-in-your-mouth popovers. These fluffy pieces of deliciousness get your mouth watering for the rest of your meal. My entree pick here is the potpie. Flaky, buttery crust is paired together with perfectly cooked chicken and veggies. Just like the popovers, this just about melts in your mouth! On top of the great food, this restaurant also has excellent service. The servers are very helpful and attentive, making sure your food arrives in good time and that your water glass is never empty. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for excellent food at a good price!

I was looking for a nice restaurant after graduation. This restaurant is gloomy, has a nursing home smell and the waitress that served us was not very formal or Catered to the service needs. Maybe if they brighten the room, quick service and the food actually smelled like something it would be a great place. Very surprise that this is a Macy's restaurant. You can take your great grand parents here and maybe they would like it.

The Oak Grille is makes a trip to the downtown Macy's feel all sorts of classy and old fashioned. The popovers are great, and even though I'm generally a very picky eater, there are always several gold old standard comfort foods on the menu I want to order. Their chicken wild rice soup, available at almost any Macy', is just about my favorite food ever. The only thing I've ever disliked about the Oak Room are their weak drinks, but it's still worth a visit for all you downtown shoppers!

First reason to go here is the popovers. They are my favorites and a nice start to lunch. I've eaten here several times and the lunch is usually pretty good. I particularly like the asiago chicken, and at one point they had guacamole as a menu special - highly recommended. The only catch is that the ice tea has a fruit-flavoring to it, which can be a shock if you aren't ready for it.

Quick update! Service was excellent! Lots of groups dining out, many with babies. My party included. I appreciate them having the slings versus the highchairs. More and more restaurants have them- so appreciated! I ordered the Mandarin Chicken salad which was excellent, but I kind of wish I would have ordered the Grilled Flank Steak Salad- Yum! Both my parents gave me bites of theirs. It was really good! Others ordered the potpie, walleye, chicken sandwich and a ceasar. Everyone loved their meal, the atmosphere and great service!

We stopped for a late lunch after the flower show. Popovers, wild rice soup, salmon salad croissant (part of their seafood special) and chicken pie--all delicious. Really good service. This place is a true classic.

We always use the Oak Grille for family visits. It's beautiful, usually quiet, wonderful food, and every meal starts with a popover! Our 92 year old mother is in heaven there and all our kids like it too.

It absolutely pains me to give only two-stars to The Oak Grille. Since I was a young kid, I have fond memories of going to the Oak Grille with my parents, especially during the holidays. Their inviting environment and comfort food was always welcomed, especially on cold winter days. Over the last couple years I wanted to start a new tradition with my own family that would include an annual visit to the Oak Grille accompanied with some Christmas shopping and going to visit Santa's village. This last Christmas may prove to be our last attempt though. Despite having a reservation (booked a month in advance), we waited 25 minutes to be seated (we arrived 5 minutes early). Once seated, we again waited another 20 minutes before I had to flag down the hostess to get our waitress to come to our table. The bad service continued as all warm drinks were cold as were the meals. My meal, which I order with everyone else, didn't come until 30 minutes after everyone was served due to my order being out. I wasn't informed about this until I asked were my food was, after everyone else was already served. Once I got my food, it was cold and hastily slapped together in a rush (a 12 year-old's plate at Old Country Buffet would have had a better presentation). The whole meal was a real let down. The entire experience left me questioning why I would want to continue the tradition. As of now, its over and this makes me pretty sad.

A Holiday tradition ! We love to go there at least once during the Christmas season. Every meal starts with a hot popover and honey butter. The Mandarin salad to start with...... Then, any one of their entrees. The Swedish Meatballs, the Asiago Chicken, the Meatloaf, the Chicken Pot Pie, those are all the ones I have tried and all have been good. If you are lucky, you may get a table near the fire.

First things first, credit must be given to our server Rae who was so hospitable, polite and helpful. Her kind attitude definitely set the tone for our wonderful dinner at The Oak Grill. For at this place was actually pretty good. As with the entire Macy's store, I was expecting it to be underwhelming but the Knockwurst I had was delicious. The sauerkraut had the right amount of sour taste and felt freshly prepared (unlike certain restaurant where it can get soggy and gross). My friend had the caremelized salmon and it was yummy. The flavor went beneath the surface of the fish and it was great. My other friend had the Asiago chicken and the texture of the chicken breast was a little chewy but moist enough, and the accompanying sauce was rich in flavors. Definitely coming back to The Oak.

I had forgotten about this nice restaurant on the 12th floor of Daytons (Yes, it will always be Daytons to me!) until the night we were going to Pentages Theater. We made reservations but there were very few people dining when we arrived. The atmosphere was very nice, prices surprisingly reasonable for a white table cloth and napkin venue, and service was good. What we ordered was the meatloaf dinner which was good for meatloaf I guess. I am not a fan of meatloaf but it was pretty good. It was served with red pepper mashed potatoes and zucchini and squash. I had a side salad and french onion soup. The french onion soup was a little beefy for my taste but it was still very good. The salad was spinach with a few mandarin oranges, and almonds. Nothing special but it was fine. The Popovers were yummy but how can popovers not be yummy? We had dessert which was my favorite part of the meal. We both had key lime bowls which was a graham cracker crust with a key lime custard and toasted meringue on top. If you are looking for a more intimate, quiet, nice place to dine without breaking the bank, this is your place. Our bill was around thirty dollars and that included dessert. Perfect place to park and dine before heading to the State, Pentages, or Orpheum.
