Great addition to Longfellow! Space feels classy and cozy. Food and service were both great. We tried all the tacos and for me, the pork was the winner. We took a chance on the kale with pigs ear and fought over last bits. For cocktails, try the Adelita. It was outstanding and I can't wait to head back for another round!

Absolutely amazing! Place was jamming!Showed up at the restaurant and the owner greeted us with open arms and remembered who we were from a couple visits to the midtown market location. He explained the differences and new items on the menu. Food was perfect tasty fresh hot and perfect portions. The margaritas were the best. Better than sitting on the beach in Mexico. If you do not stop in to try it is only your loss.

My husband and I were excited to try this new restaurant that opened up in the neighborhood. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the awkward TV blaring without purpose. Boo to TVs in restaurants! We were immediately greeted by friendly staff and a bountiful plate of fried chips and salsa. We ordered the shishito peppers, the veggie sandwich, eggplant fries, and a "rotating fish" taco (which is just their fancy name for tilapia). Overall the food was average. Maybe it was what we ordered, but it all was overwhelmingly greasy, fried, and heavy with mayo/sour cream dips. If I were to come again, I will try to avoid all the greasy/ fried items, however there aren't many "healthy" options to choose from. I probably won't come here for dinner again but maybe for drinks and appetizers to share with a few friends.

I managed to get in this place on opening night, it was packed but thankfully we had reservations. The food was perfect. Same high quality as their offerings at MGM but with more options, alcohol and dessert (which was delicious). I will probably be eating here way too often. I also noticed a lot of takeout going out the door, which is good to know.

My friend, Lara, wanted to go out for margaritas for her birthday. A quick google search for 'best margarita in Twin Cities' returned Sonora Grill. Onward!! The restaurant was easy to find, with easy parking in an adjacent lot. When we walked in, I was surprised at how busy and loud it was. We were seated right away and served water and chips and salsa. I'm not a huge fan of their salsa-very thin and smoky flavored. The chips were fantastic though. I ordered the Sonora Margarita....excellent. This was worth the trip alone. My friend ordered a different one-the 2015 winner of best margarita in the TC's. It had jalapeño pepper in it, and agave...it was OK. She loved it, and that's all that really mattered. For eats I ordered the revolving fish taco. It was lightly battered in tempura with a chili aioli-so good. I'd go back for more fish tacos for sure. I wanted to order rice and beans as a side, but I have a dairy allergy-and they couldn't make me beans without cheese. The waitress brought me the rice, but it was drenched in butter. Apparently the waitress didn't understand what 'dairy' is. No matter, my girlfriends devoured it. I'm giving this place 3 stars because I felt the service could have been better. Our waitress wasn't very friendly, and our water glasses remained empty for far too long. Salty chips call for lots of water! I think I would go back with my family. It lacked the adult feel that I wanted for a night out with friends-but it was good and I would try it again with readjusted expectations.

I have to bump this review down a notch, not because of the food, (the food was fabulous), but because of the front of the house. I was there around 12:30 and there were 4 other parties already seated, no large groups. There was one bartender and one wait person. I had to ask for additional water, I had to catch someone's eye to get them to pick up my bill and CC. It wasn't like the staff was busy, the wait person was seated on a stool talking to another employee most of the time I was there. The wait person did fill water for the tables, but ignored me at the bar??? The food? Excellent. Bocadillos shrimp sandwich and fries. Wonderful aioli of garlic and cilantro. The shrimp were done in a light tempura batter and topped with cabbage. They have now gone to a smaller fry which helps it to crisp up much better than the old slab fries they used to use. And, seasoned right out of the oil, they way they should be. Again great food, I just think the front of the house needs to be a little more attentive, especially when they are not busy.

We have sailed by many a time. Finally decided to try this place today. It looks like they have a lovely patio, but we decided to do take out. The gal taking our order was helpful. After perusing the menu which I have to say looked more appealing on paper we ordered the hermosillo roll and the chicken bocadillo sandwich.. Unfortunately either were that good. I was not expecting the hermosillo roll to be like a big fried sushi roll. Honestly it was kind of gross. Not a fan at all. The whole thing just tasted weird. I like sushi and I like fried stuff, this was just strange and tasted off. The Bocadillo sandwich wasn't much better. Chicken sandwich with a little bit of pep, but nothing fantastic. It seemed a bit dry. Fries were meh. Just seems like a lot of bells and whistles in the name and description, it just didn't deliver in the slightest for us. We both were let down. Bravo for the imagination. We'll just have to imagine some place else next time.

Being from the Sonoran area myself, I was hoping to find a great Mexican food place that reminded me of home. Their menu, however, is not the Sonoran cuisine I'm familiar with and seemed to have a lot more South American and Spanish influence than I'd have expected from the name of the place. Personally, I'm not a big fan of typical cuisine from those areas, but I did appreciate the creativity of the menu items and it's always good to get out of your comfort zone (though I admit I didn't stray too far as to try the tongue). Our meal started with a small helping of chips and salsa. The chips were very thick and fried brown (good) and weren't over-salted (excellent). The salsa that came with was of a chipotle variety that was way too smoky for my tastes, but I'm fine with plain chips. They seem to have other sauces to choose from (looking at photos of others' meals) and I'd probably ask for one of those instead, if possible. Finally decided on the red tempura shrimp taco and a steak quesadilla. The tempura shrimp was really good and I loved the cilantro sauce with cabbage in the tortillas - my only complaint is that the shrimp was way too big to actually fit in the taco. These would be better in a burrito or chopped up a bit, but I managed. The tempura is red because of a sriracha-like sauce added into the batter and wasn't too spicy even for my sensitive tongue, which I definitely appreciated, but may seem too tame for people who like things spiced up. The quesadilla was made with the same size tortillas as the taco but flat and had a lot of cheese and steak inside (you get a choice of meat filling, all for the same price). After two tapas-sized dishes and a side of chips, I was surprisingly stuffed. They also have an extensive beer and alcohol menu (the entire back of the menu is just that) as well as imported and domestic sodas. My taco and quesadilla (I just had water) came out to $14 with tip. A little pricey ($4 for a fried shrimp taco might be justifiable but not for the other steak and chicken tacos) but I'd definitely come back to try the few other menu items I was interested in.

Came for dinner because we wanted tequila. When we walked in we weren't greeted right away and weren't sure where to go, but then someone sat us. We sat for a long time before drink orders were taken, so we were a little put off. However, that changed. I got the margarita tha was voted best, and I can see why. It was perfect, with some spice. We also got a tequila flight, which is cool because you get to try 3 kinds of a brand. We got 3 tacos, beans, elote, and the pork tenderloin. OMG, the elote was fabulous, covered in some kind of angel fairy sauce. Tacos were all on point. My favorite was the chicken pastor. The pork tenderloin was to die for. I am a sucker for pork and this was fabulous. The spinach that came with it was lime flavored or something and I inhaled it. So good. The beans were nothing special, but I am not overly into refried beans anyways. Our server was good and knowledgeable. I want to come back for some brunch.

My order consisted in chicken tacos and steak tacos with an appetizer of guacamole. The flavors were of the sauce and meat were fused well. I tend to not order chicken tacos usually but I def would order them again. The steak tacos and guacamole pass my test. The tacos have a good amount of meat so I did not feel bad paying the price of $4 for a taco.

It's great to see Sonora Grill in its own brick and mortar! (If the owner is reading this, congrats!) Last month, I stopped by there for a meeting and grabbed both their cow tongue taco and Sonora Burger. *Cow Tongue Taco: When I first saw this stacked taco, I was actually pretty upset! I mean, four bucks for a taco is crazy no matter how beautiful. But then I sank my teeth in this beauty and forgot about the price. The meat was plenty tender and tasty, and I especially loved the magical cilantro salsa. I even ordered some for my burger. ($4) *Sonora Burger: This meaty burger is swole like Terry Crews, with it's thick patty, sliced tomato, hunk of lettuce and slices of red onion. Ooh, and that fluffy bun was hella delicious. Overall, it's not groundbreaking or a favorite of mine, but it gets the job done. ($10) *Service: Nicest. Guy. Ever. *Price: On the higher-side, but justifiable with quality food and service. *Décor: If a gastro pub went latin, it would be Sonora Grill. I would definitely go back.

Whenever I am in Minneapolis for work I make sure to hit both locations at least twice. The street tacos are my favorite, especially the tempura shrimp and the beef tongue. I only wish they would add tripe to the menu. Great bloody marys and cocktails at the Longstreet location. GREAT staff who are attentive and polite. This ain't taco bell so don't get upset at $4 a taco, but they are HUGE and awesome. I plan to expand my orders beyond the tacos but damn if I can't quit them. The chips, sauce and guac is stellar. Check out the happy hours to watch a game or relax at the bar. Trendy decor and good music that is not loud. Excellent joint.

I ate here twice in three days, in case that sums it up for you. If you need more words, see below. First, the Obregon Margarita. Best in show. It won an award from City Pages this year and from my belly last month. Next, the service. Super friendly and nice people everywhere you turn. Good job, guys. And finally, the food. Though their concept jumps around a HUGE chunk of the world (Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Spain, etc.), it comes together seamlessly. The paella is a hit. Probably the best I've had in Minneapolis, full of seafood, chicken and chorizo. My only gripe is this: it doesn't have the tasty crust on the bottom. It's called la soccarat and it's non-negotiable with paella. I actually heated up my leftovers the next day in a nonstick pan to make the soccarat myself and holy buckets. If they achieved that umami-crustiness, this dish would be unstoppable. As is, it's still totally worth ordering so don't let my gripe dissuade you AT ALL. Just saying, it's a ten that could be an eleven. Two days later at lunch, I got a couple of tacos because I wasn't too hungry. I already knew the tacos and bocadillos were going to be great after devouring them (lots of them) at the Midtown Global Market location, and they didn't disappoint. One was beef tongue, which is always one of my favorite taco meats. I don't even remember the other one -- not because it wasn't memorable, but because all of them are delicious and it doesn't matter. A little pricey for tacos, but the quality and the made-from-scratchness is all there to back it up. In conclusion, go to this place and eat/drink something, anything. It'll be wonderful.

The guys are crushing it. I've been a fan since day one at MGM. They take it to another level at this full restaurant location. Same great caramelos (tacos) and egg plant fries, but now offer bigger dishes like paella and full chicken plater. Do yourself a favor and get the elote. I've had a lot of corn but that is far and away the best ever. Great service and prices. Big fan here.

Amazing! My boyfriend and I went here for lunch and it was SO GOOD. Our server Miguel was very friendly and since we had not been there before, he took a moment to explain the menu and told us what to try. When you go here (and you should go now) order the following: a margarita - delicious, tasted fresh and strong, chicken nachos ($7) to share, and try the tacos ($4.25 each) - go for pork, shrimp and beef tongue! The shrimp is tempura battered and so light and crispy, I have never had shrimp so tasty! They serve Brunch/lunch weekdays with sandwiches, tacos, pancakes, hashbrowns. They have a separate dinner menu. I can't wait to go back some evening for the tequila flights and to try their dinner offerings.

Sonora Grill...I just don't know about you. Your staff is THE WORST. I can't with them. I just can't. The incompetence is staggering. It seems your servers are fresh out of f***s to give; it's like they're purposely trying to be awful. Congratulations, they're succeeding admirably. Last time we were there we sat on the patio; there were 10 occupied tables and 4-5 servers working it yet we still had to flag someone down to ask for menus, order drinks, request the complimentary chips and salsa that every other table in our vicinity had received except us, remind them that we hadn't yet received all the food we ordered, etc. I lost count of the number of times a dead-behind-the-eyes server came up to our table with something we didn't order. Is there not some sort of numbering system to the tables to help the staff figure out who ordered what? Why all the confusion? I could go into a more detailed description of their suckage, but I'm just too exhausted thinking about it. That being said, your food is pretty darn tasty, but a little overpriced for what it is--street food. The two times we've eaten there, our tacos were all brought out one at a time, which is annoying. And WHY must you serve everything on those teeny, tiny plates?! You fill those corn tortillas so generously, to the point they are overflowing, but it's impossible to get all that deliciousness into my mouth unless I'm hunched over that tiny doll-sized plate in an attempt to ensure the fillings fall onto said plate, instead of the table or my lap. When I'm paying $4-$6 for a taco, you better believe I want every last morsel in my tummy. The last time we ate there, the slices of jalapenos on everything were absolutely enormous. I mean, I can handle it, but what about all those poor, unsuspecting white people that eat there? I don't think they are prepared to handle that level of heat. I'll give you one more chance because you're in my 'hood and that's an automatic bonus star. Tacos are my kryptonite. Please get your isht together.

I've been here several times. The main dish is always great and the service is always friendly. The menu is better than the usual Mex food place, very original and well done. Be prepared for a wait for your main order, You get chips and salsa while you wait. All in all - a nice casual place for Mex food.

Have eaten at the Midtown Global market and the E Lake Street restaurant. The first time (at the market) was AWESOME and we couldn't wait to try to restaurant so we could enjoy a margarita with our meal. Our second time (first at he restaurant) had great food and mediocre service. Two weeks ago we visited for brunch. The chilaquiles were absolutely amazing but the pancakes were dry and burnt on one side. The final experience was for dinner a few nights later. We had a borderline inedible meal. The seafood plate (for 2) was so poorly cooked we left almost all of it on the plate-the shrimp were bland, the calamari was so over-fried and dry That you couldn't tell it was calamari. The soft shell crab, in the red tempura batter, was soggy. Even the red shrimp taco, which has been our go-to wasn't good. We had high hopes to finally have a Mexican restaurant in our "new" hometown but are still going to search for it.

Sonora has definitely upped their game since they first opened. I've been there several times now and every time I go it gets better and better. Though I will admit that at first I was not all that impressed, they are definitely winning my heart! The food is dang good! From chips and salsa to entree and sides my most recent meals here have been top notch. The Elote is a must have as are the shishito peppers. Man are they good! I also definitely recommend you try the tacos. I am kind of a taco fanatic though so my perspective may be a bit skewed. My biggest gripe about the menu is that they don't offer iced tea!?! What's up with that? The service can be a little spotty. There are a few people who go way above and beyond and offer some outstanding interaction and attention. I am pretty sure the one guy in particular is an owner. Beyond that their waitstaff doesn't really shine when it comes to providing the same level of care. They can be a little slow sometimes. The atmosphere is very nice, but kind of your standard 'new Minneapolis restaurant' vibe. It's a great place to meet up with friends and at night it'd be ideal for a date. They also have a really nice but small patio for those beautiful days (or nights) where you just need to be outside! There is parking in the back but it's kind of limited but you shouldn't have a problem finding street parking nearby. All in all I'd say Sonora is a place I'll keep my eye on and continue to visit. I'm interested to see where they go from here.

Trendy, new place! If you're looking for a fusion-Mexican place in the area, Sonora Grill just may be it. We ordered guacamole for our chips - it was pretty good and we'd probably order it again (although the chips themselves were lacking in quality - better than other places, but not the best). For the entree, we shared the "Hermosillo Roll" and "Grilled Chicken, Beef & Shrimp Pinchos - 3 Skewers". The Hermosillo Roll, which is more like two large tempura sushi rolls, was delicious with the two different sauces in which it sat (and it kind of worked out well as I had been craving sushi earlier that day any way). Each item on the 3 Skewers dish was also very tasty (the beef and chicken more so, though), but we did feel that the portion sizes were too small. As we had come hoping for a larger menu with heartier, traditional Mexican dishes, we ordered rice and beans on the side. We appreciated the service very much as well - they did a fantastic job of checking, refilling chips and drinks, and letting us know when our food would be ready. Everyone was friendly, and we left hearing a nice "Thank you, have a good evening!" on the way out. While this is not the place to go if you're looking for a traditional Mexican meal, big portions, and a large menu, it is definitely great for an evening of unique, tasty dishes with a Mexican-flavor twist. The environment is also trendy and unique. I'd probably go again!

I love this place. The Obergon margarita is my favorite drink and I crave their red tempura shrimp. You can easily get and drinks for two for under $50. Service is prompt and the patio is nice. Parking lot behind the building.

My 1st one star review. I was sad that I was going to have to give it to this place after reading all the reviews on here and expecting great service and great food. We came in Cinco de Mayo for some good Mexican food. Read the reviews and we were ecstatic about eating here. There was no parking in the lot they provide but not to worry there was some street parking nearby. As we walk in it looks as though is going to start raining so we decided to not sit out on the patio. Arrived at about 6:40 and the couple in front of us got seated outside and we let the Waiter/owner know that we wanted to sit inside. He gave us a menu and said it would be about 5 minutes which we were fine with. There were 2 other couples who were ready to leave but couldn't because there weren't enough waitress' to take their bill and pay. At this point we should have left as we sat and watched as 2 couples kept trying to get the attention of anyone who would take their bills to pay. Eventually they got a hold of someone and we were seated afterwards. While waiting in for a table we noticed a couple who had drinks and a couple with a small baby who also had water/soda on their tables. Since we had the menu while we were waiting we ordered as soon as we sat down at 7:00pm. Fast forward 1 hour later. We didn't get a refill on our waters. We didn't get the chips and salsa everyone else got around us. We couldn't get anyone's attention. The owner/greeter became the cook/bartender. Our waitress looked more stressed than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest and that was when she breezed by. Was it busy? Yes it was. However 2 waitress' for about 30 tables indoor/outdoors and one cook for about 80 people is beyond understaffed. On a day (Cinco De Mayo) when you would expect it to be busy at a great taco/mexican place I expected it to be busy. What you don't expect is 2 waitress' being overworked with one cook struggling to keep up. The couple with the baby eventually got their food 5 minutes before we walked out and they paid for their food the minute they got it in case it would take another 20 minutes to get their bill paid for. The other couple who sat about 20 minutes before we got seated were still waiting on their food and a refill. We walked out with a $5 bill left under the $4 margarita that we got an hour and 15 minutes ago from when we sat down. Drove down lake street to Los OCampos. While we were bugged by a guy who was trying to sell trash bags and wanted me to buy him a burrito we got our Mexican food in about 10 minutes and it was delicious!

Am I in Minneapolis??? Finally a place with fantastic service, delicious food and reasonable prices! They definitely have authentic flavors here that are blended with some new ideas that just work and are exciting! They for sure know quality and flavor here and don't over charge. The pomegranate margarita was a special but let's hope it makes the menu, it was fantastic and not over sweet. Chicken taco with orange salsa... The orange salsa was a first for me and I will get this taco every time! . Fish taco spicy but good and the hermosillo roll was strangely delicious!! This showed some talent. Can't wait to go back. I'll skip the guac next time. Service at the bar and dining in was Super!

My family had a condo in Sonora, Mexico when I was growing up, and my mother claims that Sonora Grill is the most comparable to restaurants in Sonora/Mexico than any other Mexican restaurant she's been to in the states. I can't really speak to that; I preferred cheese quesadillas in my time there, but I'll take her word for it. We got the chicken taco, fish taco, ribs, and eggplant fries. I loved the chicken taco, which I mostly attribute to the aioli, but the fish taco seemed pretty flavorless. The ribs were great, I definitely recommend them if you're looking for an entrée. The eggplant fries were good, but eggplant isn't really my thing. I can't remember what it was called, but their spicy margarita was perfect. Not too sweet, just enough of a kick. I will definitely go again. Their happy hour (2pm-5pm everyday) seems like a pretty good deal, especially if you want to sample their tacos (half price at $2/piece). Also they have brunch!?!? I must explore this.

Tough place to review. The food and service was excellent, just perfect. The chicken asado was as good of chicken as I've had anywhere. The tacos were good....guac good too. They were incredibly over-staffed. Servers were tripping over each other and it wasn't very busy. So that explains the prices...! $4 for a street taco? Ingredients were good, but, really, 4 bucks each? Elote was good, but 6 bucks for an ear of corn? Love the 1/2 cup serving of guac....for 5 bucks? The chicken asado- $18 with two teeny tortillas, a 2oz ramekin of beans and salsa. Been there, loved the food, but I'll go to any authentic Mex joint on Payne ave or a food truck and pay less than 1/2 for equally good food.

Everything here is amazing. Seriously. It's a perfect place for sharing plates & trying many items, as the portions are small. The ambiance is chic & laid-back, and the new patio is fantastic! The pancetta wrapped prawns are a must! I think it's my favorite dish in Minneapolis ~ I also love the ceviche, pinchos & tempura shrimp tacos. I was pretty worried for my husband when he ordered and received the Hermosillo Roll, I even shared my skewered chicken with him, which I thought I really good! Then he shared a bite of his plate with me and I realized he had won the night. The Hermosillo Roll is like a giant fully cooked sushi roll, with pork. As a sushi lover I figured it just want smart to try to imitate the delicacy of sushi in a fried roll of pork. I was wrong. It was just as good as any roll of sushi, try it!

"I'd come back here!... Will you Yelp this place?... Did I already ask that?" - all things my handsome manfriend said literally four times while we were at our first Sonora Grill expedition. Which, translated out of Terin-speak and into the common parlance, means this place is our new go-to. First of all, the host came RUNNING up to the door to greet us when we walked in, his face literally breaking into pieces with happiness that we were there. Dude. I'm yours. I will gladly spend too much money here. Here, just take my wallet. They get a second super mega bonus right off the bat because they have a solid set of options for folks who don't eat meat but do eat seafood. We had a hard time choosing, which was surprising and aaawwesoome. We landed on the shrimp taco, fish taco, and ceviche. All. Fantastic. My shrimp taco was made up of two HUGE portions of shrimp that had been battered with something airy and light (and slightly spicy) and set on a bed of thinly-shredded cabbage and a smear of some kind of delicious green sauce. And the ceviche was perfect- everything was diced finely and it was a perfect limey salsa, with cucumber and tomato and pure, good old-fashioned freshness. The only sadsad was that the strips of tortilla chips they served with it were really too thin to pick up much ceviche- which probably kept me from eating the whole platter in 2.5 seconds flat. Which may be the point. Also? My virgin margarita was DELICIOUS, and they took it seriously. They still put the salt on the rim and their pour was generous- which is a huge plus when most restaurants will take a "virgin" anything as an excuse to give you a sip of mixer and pocket your $4. Love them. Delighted they're in the neighborhood.

Food is great, drinks are amazing! We came late on a friday after the rush and had some ceviche, guac, empanadas, coconut rice with squash, and a few other things. Everything was fantastic, we tried a couple of the drinks - and those were all quite outstanding! I need to come back and come very hungry as I want to eat everything! They have braised kale - which looked amazing but we were too full to try anything else. The space is also pretty nice, open - they do communal type seating here - which if you hate people - then probably not your cup of tea, but kinda fun to dine with strangers - and you can engage them or just hang out with your crew if you want. Always depends on who you get! We had great service, and I'm sure any issues those below had will be worked out in time - supposed to wait a month or two to review (if you are a professional) so that the place can work out it's kinks. I'll be back for sure, I'm salivating already!

Great brunch location with Mexican style grub. Big patio for outdoor seating if the weather is cooperating. Not a huge brunch menu, but the Tortilla Espanola with pork sausage was amazing and definitely worth a try. They make an okay bloody too, but it seemed a bit on the week side boozy wise. Service was a little slow, and they had some pretty loud remodeling going on within the store while I was there, but I wont hold that against them. I'll be back.

This place is new, so I am giving it a bit of grace. New restaurants all deserve a little grace, I say. No reservations, which scared me and my group of 6. However, I arrived 15 minutes early to request a table, and it was ready when my group came in. There isn't any seating for people waiting, so just grab a seat at the bar. I order a Surly which was $7...eek. The place is small, cozy, and has a great vibe. The menu is not huge, but has some really good stuff on it. The tacos are, in my opinion, the best deal. The prices are a bit high for the portions (as well as higher than their Global Market location), but you do get free chips and salsa, and they make literally EVERYTHING at the shop. Note: the "Platos" are generally more like appetizers or tapas- you'll want to get a side of something to be full. Note 2: The fish taco and shrimp tacos are HUGE. Big ol' pieces of seafood. Get one. Everything is flavored so well, so delicately and so detailed. Note 3: Slower service and the credit card machine broke. No bueno. But I gave grace. I would recommend coming back here, but I would also recommend, if you're wanting to grab a casual bite to eat, go to the other location. Its just as delicious. But again, it depends on what your mood is that day.

I've had unreasonably high expectations for this place ever since I saw the "coming soon" sign out front. I used to live across the street from the Midtown Global Market and frequented Sonora's location there weekly. I've been driving by the new location every day salivating, getting my hopes WAY too high. Tonight at their grand opening they somehow managed to exceed my expectations. Everything was so delicious. Many of the favorites from MGM are on the menu, along with many new additions. We tried the pinchos, ceviche and empanadas. It's hard for me to pick a favorite as everything was excellent. Our server asked to take some plates several times but we had to ask them to come back later because we wanted to keep dipping our forks in the leftover sauces. The cocktails were great, too. I preferred my wife's spicy tequila drink over my mojito. Sonora Grill is an exciting and welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Overall great experience! The ambiance is nice. Sonora is a progressive eatery with a neighborhood feel and the patrons are cool people. Beer selection is pretty good - everything you want and nothing you don't. The food is simple yet aesthetically prepared and the quality is high. The wait staff are great and clearly care about their restaurant. Managers are present and the open kitchen allows you to see what's going on behind the scenes! Great for happy hour, a first date, dinner with friends, or a solo dinner! By far one of the most unassuming gems off of lake street. Oh and by the way, the neighborhood is still longfellowish and not yet that Lake and Chicago feel. Check this place out!

Won't be back, went in for the first time to try their margaritas. Website clearly states a $4 sonora margarita during happy hour, whole reason I went there. When i recieved my bill, the charge was $22 for 2 drinks. When i questioned the bartender i was informed that I'd ordered both my drinks before 2 pm, which is rediculous as I'd sat in my car in the parking lot for 5 minutes waiting for 2 o'clock to roll around when I arrived. Then, despite showing him the webpage on my phone, (again, $4 SONORA MARGARITA in bold print) i was told that I was wrong, with no explanation. If you want to get overcharged for an average margarita, and then talked down to in front of other patrons, run in to sonora! Bartender is a prick.

According to people below I'm not a professional because I rated it before a month was up after their opening. I did note it was the first night and kinks would have to be worked out. Passive-aggressiveness aside, we did try it again and as anticipated service was much better and we enjoyed our experience. Like some of the other reviewers, we're in the neighborhood and probably have higher expectations because we need amazing and great places in the area! We stopped by on a weeknight but our server was on point, the food was still delicious and they now have staff that also helped run and bus which helps out a lot too. Looking forward to trying the happy hours.

We had to ask twice to get a second drink and it took forever to get our bill. A different server made our second round of drinks that were not good. This was my fourth visit and the first three were lovely, to be fair. I met a friend there for happy hour on a Tuesday and the waiter could not have been more rude. The place was nearly empty and when we asked for a booth he just grunted and tossed our menus on the table. We had to pry the beer information out of him. The eggplant fries were DISGUSTING and tasted like OLD FISH! I would have sent them back, but would rather pay for them than have to deal with rude-waiter-man. The margaritas were good, which was helpful in getting the disgusting fish taste out of my mouth. I may give it another try because statistically, this may have been a very off night, and the waiter may have had something horrible happen which caused him to hate his job or people or something. Maybe they'll change the oil in the deep fryer.. I like to dream big.

I wanted to love it, honestly I did. Not sure why the reviews rave though, so here is my take... Nuts and bolts: poor service as they are not staffed adequately, my server was almost mute when I asked her what she recommended on the menu, we had dirty plates on the edge of the table to be picked up for 20 minutes, all of our plates came out at different times, it took 10 minutes for me to get a new drink when I brought mine to the bar as it tasted very odd and diluted. This place is way too loud, with both the music and the crowd. Mind you, I love to jam with the best of them, but yelling about my day to my table mates just didn't feel relaxing. The tacos where OK, but sadly you can get better ones after a 2 minute wait and save yourself $16 if you swing by the taco taxi truck on Lake and 20th. None of the food "fit" together. You would think Mexican influence right? Mmmmmm, no. So some of the things that hit our table were puzzling, like the Hermosillo roll and the shrimp wrapped in pancetta. We expected a Latin twist, but it wasn't to be. The empanadas were filled with mealy ground pork, the texture mostly killing the dish. So sorry Sonora, I tried.

Five stars for a number of reasons. First, congratulations to the owners who took a risk and moved into this address that has been the death knell for E Lake Street restaurants for over 25 years. The design is terrific. Second, (and really first) the food was top notch. Our server didn't really have a grip on the menu items, but I'm not sure that matters for a restaurant where everything is likely very good. I had the Cured Salmon Salad which was a small portion of salmon lox under a bed of greens with the dressing smeared on the plate in the utmost appealing way. As I worked my way through this experience, I discovered small slices of dates near the bottom which was the perfect sweet balance with the salmon and greens. It was so original and so good. Finally, on a Wednesday night, the parking lot was full and the dining experience fully explained the reason. Thank you owners for reviving this property.

Ate brunch on a Sunday morning. I wanted to like this place. The decor is minimalist Southwestern with a hip feel. I had the Chilquiles. Wife had the French Toast. Service was confused and slow. Two large groups seated after us got their food before us. Food took 40 minutes to come, eggs and beans don't take that long. Food was good and savory. Coffee was awful. Burnt Bunn drip makers. Saw the waiter pour the last of a pot into our cups then fill the rest of the cup with hot water. Mmmm. ..burnt brown water..not coffee. Overall, no need for me to come back.

The team running Sonora were always outstanding at the MGM, and it is no different here. They greet you with a smile, make sure you are happy and well serviced, and serve really good food. It is hard to find anything like good Mexican food in Minneapolis, this fills the bill for us. We are so happy for the new location - more pleasant sitting here in a dedicated space, than the MGM. They did a great job with the remodel. I always hate to compare Mpls to other places, but this is as SoCal as it gets in these parts (in a good way). Located two miles east of 35W on East Lake, Sonora Grill was recently received accolades from several local publications, so I decided to give their tacos a go. With ample parking, both on the side and behind, plus on the side street it was an easy stop. The restaurant offers seating both inside and outside under its pergola. The menu is broken into several sections, but I was there for a taco sampling so I ordered four, the pork, chicken, tongue and skirt steak. The menu described minor modification to the accompaniments to each of the meats, ranging from Chipotle salsa, to cabbage, to onions, plus a few with cheese. When they arrived the first noticeable trait was the amount of filling; Sonora Grill serves as much filling as any taco I have ever eaten. It challenges the guest to carefully wrap, lift and bite without losing any of the filling. The second, very positive item, was the onions, not raw or flash grilled onions, but beautifully caramelized, which was a fantastic addition. The best of the four tacos was the "Tongue." The menu mentioned it included Chipotle salsa, cilantro, onions and cabbage. I saw no salsa. When I asked the server, he mentioned that the salsa was mixed into the meat. Whether this was true or not, this combination was outstanding. It delivered great flavor and texture from the meat, which was soft and delightful. The cabbage added just a touch of crunch and the thinly sliced jalapeño pepper slices kicked the spice level without overwhelming the other flavors. The other taco that was delicious was the "Pork Guajillo" served with melted Chihuahua cheese, onion and chipotle salsa. The pork was slowly braised to create a subtle texture, and in combination with the sweet caramelized onions and jalapeños create a great balance. Again I was told that the chipotle salsa was mixed into the meat. I really liked the addition of the caramelized onions that added an unusual sweet component to the tacos. Unfortunately the other two were not as good as these two. The "Chicken Rioja" was served with Chihuahua cheese, Arbol aioli, and orange salsa. The chicken was first spiced with smoky seasoning and then cut into small dices before joining orange segments, thinly sliced jalapeño peppers, caramelized onions and some cilantro. The chicken was dried out, chewy and the seasoning overwhelmed the flavor. The aioli added a great creaminess (which was really required) and the oranges brightened and balanced the dish. The "Beef Skirt Steak" was the polar opposite of the tongue, so much so that I left more than half on the plate. The menu stated it was accompanied with Chihuahua cheese, onions and chipotle salsa. Mine was also prepared with shredded cabbage, sliced jalapeños and re-fried beans. The meat was so vastly overcooked that it was impossible to chew. There was no opportunity to include the salsa in the meat and once again it was missing. The addition of the beans was an attempt to save this combination but it failed. This should never have left the kitchen. Overall I liked two of the four tacos but the other two were badly executed. The amount of filling was substantial but I question whether the server was completely honest when he told me the chipotle salsa was mixed into the meat.

I've loved getting lunch at the Sonora Grill in Midtown Global Market, so I was excited to see a location open up in Longfellow. Somehow with my already high expectations, Sonora Longfellow blew me away even more with this amazing food. Started off with the caramelos (tiny overstuffed tacos) and they were outstanding. Perfect fresh corn tortillas piled high with spicy fried shrimp and drizzled with an amazing cilantro sauce. We got an order of guac with our chips which was definitely solid. My wife had the elote (grilled corn) drizzeld with salsa and a creamy cilantro sauce, served on a bed of cheesy rice-- very tasty. But the apex of our meal was the main course: chicken asado. Its a whole, debonded chicken marinated and brined in an incredible blend of spices, grilled and baked. It was absolutely some of the best chicken I've ever had in my life. Smokey, juicy, flavorful. All other chicken is ruined forever. And Alexander wept, for there were no more worlds left to be conquered. In addition to great food the service was friendly, the margaritas great, and the prices competitive. This might be my new favorite restaurant in all of MSP.

Ohhhh, I love this place! Great cocktails all around and I love the menu, standouts are the grilled shrimp, pork tacos and the smoky salsa. Service is friendly but uneven. Wish they were open later on weekend nights. A much needed ray of sunshine in Longfellow!

On a lazy Saturday afternoon, we set out on a journey for something to fill our chips & guacamole void. I recently drove past Sonora and double-checked Yelp before enjoying one of the better lunches. I have never been to the MTGM location, but will definitely have to check it out after such a great lunch! In short, if you are feeling high quality Latin American/Spanish cuisine, Sonora is a safe bet. We arrived at around 2PM and were seated immediately. There was one waitress/hostess working the entire restaurant, which was pretty busy, but she still did a speedy job of taking care of us. Also, Sonora's "bus boys" are honestly some of the happiest, well mannered restaurant folks I have run across in the Twin Cities! When seated, they immediately brought out hand cut tortilla chips and an excellent sauce. Additionally, we ordered the chips & guac, and it was absolutely wonderful! So light and refreshing I had a brief out of body experience back to the beaches of Cancun...sigh. Now is a good time to point out that EVERYTHING is made from scratch...and it shows (in a good way)! For an entree, I ordered 3 tacos: steak, chicken, and pork. I would only suggest ordering 3 + an app if you are starving! 2 tacos would have sufficed. I must say these were some of the better tacos I have ever had, and probably the best I have had in the Twin Cities. If I was forced to order one go for the chicken! Light, extremely flavorful, and perfect tortillas.To top it all off the pricing was extremely reasonable. Three tacos+chips & guac=~$15. Not bad at all! I feel the only mediocre item of note was the restaurant itself. They did a nice job renovating a lackluster building, but the old cafeteria style floor and seating arrangement made it feel somewhat like a Perkins/Denny's with a bar in the middle. I know it's not an instant fix, but food/service like this deserves an even better space.

Longfellow is a good neighborhood for people of St. Paul to gradually cross over to Mpls. Their HH run early 2-5, as I tend to. It turns out I've passed over this place when I would have had a great time all these years. I got here about 1:30, having no clue about the menu. Two large parties were wrapping up. I love skirt steak and love when people serve it, let alone know what it is.So I got a taco and enchiladas. I would describe the food as dainty. The enchiladas are in a bowl with a tangy red sauce, and plenty of it. I ended up adding the sauce that's complimentary with the chips on the taco. They ran out of lemonade. I noticed a guy who just had a presence, and sure enough Raoul is the manager. You can feel the pride he takes in this treasure. I told him that it was my first time here, and how great my meal was, and I'll be back often, like today. It is a nice place to hang out, and I'm anxious to try brunch too.

We walked through the doors into a very busy atmosphere. We had reservations at 7pm on a Saturday, however we were still seated 15 min late as there was no host to greet the guests or check in with. It took a while to even be noticed by the employees. After we were seated the service improved. We ordered the guacamole as an appetizer, which is a small portion for only 2 people. We ordered beef tacos and empanadas which were both outstanding! We would definitely order them again. I would have rated them a 5 had the service been better from the start.

I love the space at Sonora Grill. I do wish, however, that new restaurants would stop with this making sure that there are no noise absorbers anywhere. I guess I am getting too old because I like to hear the conversation happening at my own table. Service was excellent! The tacos were excellent. We sampled several different kinds. The guacamole was outstanding!! I say it's the best in town - super fun mouth feel and had garlic undertones - something new for me. The only draw back was the burger. I think that they shouldn't bother with it. It's really awful. If they are offering it as an alternative to the type of food they are serving, it will undoubtedly be a huge letdown to whoever orders it. The burger is so bad that it is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. By the way, super reasonable prices!! We will be back soon.

After being frequent customers of the MGM location, we were so excited to learn that Sonora was expanding. We finally got our chance to go a couple weeks after the opening, and everything lived up to our very high expectations. I ordered the ceviche, which was fantastic. i haven't had any this good in town since the departure of La Sirena Gorda, and I daresay I might have enjoyed Sonora's even more. It was perfectly fresh, beautifully flavorful and came in a perfect portion. My companion had a bocadillo (pork) which was delicious, as the ones at MGM have always been. We both ordered the Obregon cocktail, which was excellent; the heat of the chile in it made it that much better. These guys put so much effort and attention into what they do, and it really shows.

Having tried the eggplant fry tacos at the MN State Fair last summer - not once but TWICE (because they are basically crack...seriously, so addicting) - I was really excited to see the "Coming Soon" sign for Sonora Grill's new(ish) Longfellow stand-alone restaurant! My boyfriend lives nearby so one bitterly frigid Sunday not long after they opened, we tagged along with his roommate to warm up with a couple of cocktails and some delicious food. The overall atmosphere is a bit cold - lots of metallic surfaces - but it's clean and modern looking. There were a couple of TVs by the bar (where we sat to watch Sunday Football) but I definitely wouldn't consider it a sports bar by any stretch of the imagination. The first cocktail I ordered was disappointingly sweet and artificial tasting. It was a purplish/pink cocktail with vodka and some kind of liqueur, but I cannot remember the name and their website has yet to include much information about this location (like a drink menu or more expansive food offerings). However, my boyfriend's roommate got their margarita-type drink that came with some fresh jalapeno slices. I took one sip an was in love so I ordered this as my second cocktail. The bartenders switched over while we were there and the second bartender did not make the drink correctly and ommitted ice. However, since it's a new restaurant I of course cannot fault them for working out their kinks. I will say, though, that the price of the cocktails is a bit steep and the food is really the reason to go. Between the three of us, we split chips and guacamole (guacamole garnished with crisp, thinly-sliced radish and other veggies...refreshing and deceptively summery on that -50 degree day!) and an order of eggplant fries (which are so great paired with the accompanying dipping sauce, and actually taste just as good when cold the next day straight out of the refrigerator...no need to reheat!). We also received complimentary chips and salsa. My boyfriend was hoping to try their "Sonora Hot Dog" (from the website: "Bacon wrapped served with turkey-chorizo, sauteed onion, cilantro-aioli, tomato and french fries") but they were out of the dogs so he instead got some kind of pulled pork sandwich. He thought it was delicious and the serving size was enormous. I opted for a smaller plate (since I was filling up on eggplant fries and guacamole) and just ordered one mushroom caramelo. My boyfriend's roommate ordered a shrimp caramelo and a pork one. All of the food was excellent! The second time I went to Sonora Grill, it was around 11PM on a Friday night and they had Happy Hour specials...$4 for margaritas (not the fancy spicy ones on the regular menu, but still a good price for a tasty enough drink) and a small selection of appetizers. We split the guacamole + eggplant fries again and were not disappointed. I can't wait to go back and branch out a bit when I order!

My crab enchiladas did not seem to have any crab in them and were kind if pricey. The other 3 people in our group liked what they had : 2 said good; one great. Our waiter was very vague when asked to describe the special and to explain the menu offerings. Either make sure your staff knows how to describe items on the menu or write the copy in such a way that one can clearly understand what each dish is like.

Saw that this place just opened in my neighborhood a few weeks ago and was anxious to check it out since I work in the restaurant industry myself. Last night I ended up going with a few friends of mine and I would have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, especially since the food was exceptional! You might be there sucking down drinks for a while before your food gets to the table, but I can say that it is definitely well worth the wait! You have to order the Sonora hot dog if you wanna experience one of the best hot dogs in town.Hot dog, chorizo, then topped with this green aioli sauce that is soooo good! And if you haven't had Sheshito peppers ever in your life then you need to get them here as well! Last night just confirmed for me that Sonora is one of the better Southwestern Latin restaurants on this side of Minneapolis. The atmosphere was very chill and relaxing and the feng shui is right on point! To top it all off the management was very welcoming so definitely check this one out! My friends and I had a great experience.

Sonora Grill is super delicious! I have tried just about everything. These are the must get items. Chicken tacos are my favorite but the carne asada, shrimp and the mushroom tacos are great too. The burger and hot dog are a nice take on something a little different too. I also like the bocadillos. Don't forget to top it off with a mojito because they make a really tasty one. Also check out their specials those can be really great too! Conrado and Alejandro really care about what they make and do. It shows through in everything they do. Glad to have them on Lake St. : )

I went a few weeks back and I thought this was a winner all the way around. We went on a Tuesday evening and it was busy and bustling. The ambiance was cozy and had a modern feel. We came with another couple so we ordered up quite a bit of food and they were all winners in my book with the pig tails coming out on top. Those were some tasty bits of meat. The Drinks were strong and the food was good so not much more I can ask for than that!

I am so tired of people complaining about 3 or 4 dollar tacos. I work in a taco shop across town and I know how labor intensive they are.. If you want Taco Bell quality don't go to a sit down full service restaurant. I have visited the restaurant once and fell in love with the fish tacos. Incredible flavor and heat on the fish and despite what my boyfriend says, the tongue tacos at Sonora are much better than my restaurant though I'm told ours are more authentic. Great addition to the competition!!!

It's ok. Shrimp taco was good. Mushroom taco was good. Eggplant fries were good but the dipping sauce was just orange mayonnaise, as far as our taste buds could tell. We also had chicken, skirt steak, and pork tacos. Those were not so great. Just kind of, eh. Nothing has much spice. Just throwing a slice of jalapeno on top doesn't do much. There are some subtle flavors, but it's not really Mexican, if that's what you're looking for. When we asked our server to tell us what was in each dish - you can't tell from the menu - he seemed to make an assumption that we really didn't understand Mexican cuisine. We did. Just couldn't figure out their menu. You have to ask what the special is. And hope you can understand your server as he rattles it off really fast. The two desserts we tried were not anything to write home about. One seemed to be some kind of house special (I never did catch the name). It's a fried tortilla underneath some pretty good ice cream, but on top of some kind of horrendous chocolate thing that might be packaged pudding, only not as good. The flan was ok, but really pricey. The prices are too high. If you're going to charge that much for a taco, throw some rice and beans on the side. And from reading these reviews, I see now that our server never bothered to bring us complimentary chips. That might have increased our enjoyment and made it more likely we'd go back. The service was not so great. Our server refused to write down anything we ordered, so it was no surprise that he forgot to bring all of it. And it took some work to get water refilled. El Norteno, just down the street, may not be so high class, but $12 will get you enough tacos AND rice and beans. You won't leave hungry. It's actual Mexican food. And there's complimentary chips. We might try the place again in 6 months to see if things have improved.

Sorry Sonora, the honeymoon is over. You really need to either hire better staff or train them better. Wait time for drinks is way too long. Was charged for items not ordered-- twice! I will still say the food is good but just a bit overpriced, especially on the tacos. Thanks again for coming to the neighborhood but the two times I've been back since my first visit have not been impressive. Get it together, I want this to work out between us!

Stopped in about 2:30 on Sunday to enjoy some happy hour food and cocktails on the sunny patio. It was fairly busy, but not packed but PAINFULLY SLOW. I mean, waiting 35 minutes for a drink. Waiting another 30 minute for some chips. And so on and so on. The staff would bring food to the wrong tables and deliver food to people who had just ordered while we waited and waited. The much-raved about food was honestly average and not worth returning for. Drinks were weak, and obviously pre-mixed for happy hour. Glad I tried it...but one and done.

Super happy hour! We tried both the chicken and pork happy hour tacos and loved them both. We also tried the flautas and Hermosillo roll - delicious. We sat at the bar and had great service - quick and friendly. We will surely be back to try more of the tacos and check out the patio.

I love the chicken tacos! The flavors are unique and thoughtful--delicious! 2 or 3 is a good lunch serving for me. I tried the Sonora dog, and I really disliked that even though it sounded excellent in description. The tacos make up for it!

This is a pan-Latin/Asian fusion restaurant. It is not authentic. The surprising thing is that their food is good . . . if you manage to get them to not put the disgusting creamy goop on it. The empanadas were ruined by the sea of cream, the elote was ruined by the 3 different sauces (and the mound of creamy fideos it was served on). The flan was disgusting, too much maple syrup. I had to give them instructions to get a decent margarita. It's a shame. I'll never go back there again. That this place was given an award as a top restaurant in the Twin Cities confirms what I've always suspected . . . foodie culture and restaurant reviews here are extremely racist. Restaurant owners get rewarded for expropriating ethnicity and bleaching it out. One can find superior Mexican food up and down Lake Street but none of them get an award.

I ate at the new Sonora Grill last night, and I am still thinking about the delicious food 16 hours later. I would say that is the best possible sign of restaurant success. Like everyone who walks in the door, we started off with house-made tortilla chip strips and a smoky salsa. My boyfriend, a spice aficionado, asked for something a bit hotter and they obliged with another lovely salsa. I got one pork and one "rotating fish" taco, and both were utterly phenomenal. Both were served on tiny little tortillas absolutely heaped with toppings. There is no way either tortilla could have closed around the meat/fish served atop it. The pork was tender, moist, and deeply flavored the way slow-cooked meat is meant to be. The fish surprised me by being quite spicy, fried in a green chile batter of some sort. The unexpected heat added a very desirable layer to to dish. My dining companion ordered two of the pork tacos and was equally enthusiastic about their flavor and quality. Ambiance was great! We were there on a Wednesday night around 8 PM and the place was hopping. There was a very pleasant buzz of conversation, which was great on a night like last night but leads me to believe that it could potentially be rather loud on a truly busy evening. The staff were all friendly and helpful, but my waiter forgot my sangria. I wan't particularly bothered since I had been on the fence about ordering a drink in the first place. Even if I had to check in on the status of my drink every time I visited, that would not begin to dissuade me from returning. I would actually consider going back again tonight if I didn't already have other plans--and I am not generally someone to eat the thing over and over.

Went in on a Saturday around 5:30 with my husband and 7 year old daughter. We were looking for something new and inspiring. We saw this place and decided to take a chance. We walked in and were not greeted by anybody. I caught the eye of a server and asked for a table for 3. She pointed behind me and said, " You can push those two tables together." and then walked away. So, we pushed the two tables together and sat down. Then someone else dropped off three menus and left without a word. Let me be perfectly clear, they WERE NOT busy AT ALL. There were a lot of people who appeared "mid meal", so why the cold shoulder? We took a look at the menu. NOT impressed by the beer menu- who still drinks Fulton Lonely Blonde? $8 for a hot dog and fries for the 7 year old! Are they having a laugh? We got up and left without a word. We never do that, but we felt so unwelcome by the staff and put off by the menu that we just didn't feel like giving them our time and money. We will never go back there again! There are plenty of authentic Mexican restaurants on E. Lake street to feed our need for flavor, so we really don't need to put up with cold staff and a sad beer menu.

Went for lunch today, and I have to say I was rather disappointed. The food itself was OK--not bad, not great. My disappointment came from the horribly inflated prices. I had two tiny tacos--barely 3" or 4" across--but which cost $4 each. After finishing the two I was still hungry. Add in the $7 beer and you have a $15 lunch, not including tax and tip. Last week I had tacos at Los Ocampos, which were far more tasty and were half the price. Unless they trim their prices I don't see a long future for this place.

Was so excited to see a new location opening up, but something has really been lost in terms of the food quality. The steak in my pinchos order was inedibly tough and chewy. The first time I thought maybe it was a fluke, the second time it became clear that there is a serious quality issue going on here. The chicken was okay, but not great. The only thing that's consistent is the shrimp, which is very yummy.

Pork chilaquiles: OMG. These are gourmet chilaquiles with succulent seasoned shredded pork mixed in with tortilla strips, cotija cheese and topped with a fried egg (I ordered from the lunch menu). I will be torn to either order the same thing again and again or dive into one of the other intriguing options. Great vibe here, partly from being so new. Everyone's eager to please. And they did!

Have been a few times already as we live a block away. We've mostly liked what we've ordered. The 3 stars comes from having tried to stop in there twice now for "happy hour" for their advertised 10-close and they were basically closed the first time, and the kitchen was closed the second time (tonight that is, which we waited for). We arrived at 10 both times. Just don't advertise it if it's not going to be fulfilled on your end. We'll probably try again (again, a block away w/ no late night food options - sometimes desperate), but if you're going to advertise happy hour from 10-close at least keep the kitchen open til 10:30, otherwise expect irritated customers when they walk in and have to walk straight out.
