Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

I love pho and happened to be biking past here at about lunch time. It was 12:30 or so on a Saturday. It was a nice day with many people about. I went in and nobody was there. I looked at a paper menu, of which there were only two. I then sat down and waited for a long time. I could hear some noise from the back (kitchen?) but no response to my, "hello?". I then walked out.

This place completely underwhelmed me. Decor is nothing, but I expect that with cheap ethnic eats, the food makes up for it. But not here. My clue should have been that it was 7:30 on a Friday night when I walked in the place was empty. Menu was simple white on black photocopies in plastic sleeves. Low tech, no problem, except that an add-on tag on the first page said, "Due to increased cost of ingredients, please add .50 to all menu items." They couldn't even run new copies out on their laser printer! The Vetnamese offerings were mixed in with Chinese dishes, and descriptions were so generic it was difficult to imagine what you were really getting. We saw a "steamed rice crepe" in the appetizer section with the note "when available." We asked for it when we ordered dinner (two beef noodle salads and an order of BBQ beef on noodles) and the waiter said he would check. Then he disappeared. For 25 minutes. Finally an elderly lady showed up with two plates of anemic-looking "beef salad." Soft beef, overcooked noodles, aging iceberg lettuce, and a couple hunks of mushy tomatoes and slices of cucumber. Lackluster fish sauce. Then the BBQ beef, which was the same as the salads minus the tomato and cukes. No mention of the missing appetizer. Fine if they don't have it, but don't say you'll check and then leave me hanging. This was all the more disappointing when I compare it to the fabulous mouthwatering beef salads I get within five minutes of sitting down at University Ave.'s Saigon. With the economy the way it is, I don't eat out as often as I'd like to, and each time is an opportunity for something new, fresh, and fun. Too bad I wasted one of those chances on this place. I will not be going back.

I've only had take out from here, but this place is legit. Great egg rolls, fantastic fried rice, amazing wonton soup. They are a little on the slow side but you patience will be rewarded. Other chinese/vietnamese places in uptown have been going downhill but this one is always great!

This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the Twin Cities. I always get the chicken noodle soup with egg noodles and add wantons. It is my comfort food. Whenever I am sick or sad I come to Saigon Uptown for soup and their yummy pork egg rolls. I seriously love this place.

The food has been ok, but I didn't care for the shitty attitude of the lady that worked there when I paid for my egg rolls with a card. What a bitch.

I think the little old lady in the front of the house harvested the veggies and killed the chicken in my stir-fry before frying and plating. With 4 customers total in the restaurant on a Saturday night you'd think it would take less than 45 minutes to prepare food that is virtually already prepared. I thought it would be bar close before we got our food. And the service...if I wanted a waiter, bus boy, and sommelier I'd throw down for it, and obviously serious attentiveness isn't reflected in the bill - which is what I love about these little whole in the walls. But, when the house goes unattended for so long that the same customer gets up twice to go to the waiters station and refill their own water, then you know there a neglect issue. Not to harp too much, our dishes were good and the menu was fairly extensive. It just wasn't anything I couldn't get at one of the other lesser favorites on Eat Street. And did anyone notice the Clam Chowder and Broccoli Cheddar soup at the beginning of the menu? Doesn't sound very Vietnamese....

In all honesty, I never wanted to try this place. I'd read the reviews on here and with all the other great Vietnamese restaurants around the area, I just figured, why bother. Buuuuutt, apparently my boyfriend didn't feel that way, since someone told him they really liked this place (never listening to that person again...) and we live really really close. So I figured what the heck - give it a try. If you are having this thought too - don't. Just don't. And I feel bad saying that, because as others have pointed out, the people who work here, the older woman in particular, are very nice. She even asked me if I liked my pho and proudly proclaimed it was home made. Eek, I didn't have the heart to say no. What I was thinking though, was no, it was actually probably, sadly, the worst bowl of pho I've had. I ate my soup and tried some of my boyfriends dish. His was very oily (as someone else's review pointed out about the food here) and chewy, chewy, chewy. My pho was....ah how to describe it - it really didn't have much flavor, very bland broth, except for the beef that is, which had a somewhat rotten taste to it. I don't think it was actually rotten but it sure had some kind of a funky taste to it. And really what else is there to say, except to repeat, as much as I hate to say it, go elsewhere.

So...hm....not so great. Should have been tipped off when we went there to eat at noon and we were the entire lunch rush that there may be a problem. Egg rolls and spring rolls were great. Should have stopped there and called it a day. The curry chicken was just kinda weird. I don't know how you undercook and overcook vegetables at the same time. My husband's chicken in black bean sauce was OK...nothing special. Add in some really annoying Christmas music, a really really cold restaurant, and there you go. The little lady that works there is...I agree...totally adorable. She gets a half a star.

I love Saigon! It was within walking distance from my apartment and decently priced. Never have had ANY complaints about the food but the service isn't the best because it's basically family owned and operated. 1 elderly woman serves everyone who is dining. I've only witnessed once where another person was helping deliver food and/or take orders. The decor is nothing to go gaga over, but its a quiet place with great food. The food may take awhile to get to your table, but you won't be disappointed when it arrives!
(4)Doug B.
This resturant is a hidden treasure. The service is slow, there is no atmosphere, but the Spring Rolls and the Hot & Spicy Chicken with Lemon Grass are great - all for less than $10. It's like having your own Vietamese grandmother!
(5)Bob B.
Excellent food, especially the seafood soup. Crisp, fresh vegetables. Egg rolls are perfect, melt in your mouth.

Best chi/viet food in uptown. I want this family run restaurant to do well and they have THE BEST PHO EVER! It's not much to look at but give it a chance I dare ya!
(5)Adrianna P.
This place is a hidden gem. The restaurant decor is nothing to brag about and the menus come to you in plastic school folder and sheet protectors. That aside the food is very good and REALLY cheap! Everything is under $10 and mostly entrees are $7 which is half what I usually find myself paying. The staff there are great too! It's family owned and the mother who works there is very sweet. Some of my personal recommendations would be the Lo Mien: full of veggies and has an amazing sauce, BBQ sliced pork: savory meat over rice noodles and veggies, and the Banh Mi are really good and only like $4!

I have ate here about once a month for the last 5 years. This place is one of my favorites and was a staple during our time in Minneapolis. The food is very good and extremely reasonably priced. I would recommend the tofu spring rolls and the curry tofu. This is a family run business, I think the two older women - the server and the chef - are sisters and the younger guy is the son of one of them. Be sure to ring the bell at the counter when you want to pay. 90% of the time the same women waited on us, she may seem 'cold' but this is a cultural difference - she is actually very friendly and kind hearted. I will deeply miss this place when I move.

I have been going to Saigon for years. I used to go far too often when I lived closer by but I still make the trek now because I am obsessed with their spring rolls. I am a spring roll fiend and have tried them from all over but I always dream of Saigon's. All of the soups and the spicy beef with lemongrass are also some of my favorites. But again, the spring rolls are a must. While the inside isn't anything special, I always enjoy the service. The main woman is always working and is extremely polite.

I have always wanted to go here especially since it is so close to my house, but I have also always been freaked out by the constantly closed shades. I often wonder to myself if I walked in there, would I ever walk out?? You can't see if anyone is in there! BUT yelpers, I overcame my fear, as my friend suggested we go try it out. He had tried the pho before and said it was delicious. There is apparently parking in the back, we just parked on the street and walked. The inside is a little blah and the tables kind of old looking, but there is some really interesting and great artwork on the wall which makes the place feel more friendly and inviting. We were greeted by the cutest older woman ever, very soft spoken but very kind. The menu is huge consisting of normal Chinese dishes, separated by lo mein, chow fun, and all the meats, and of course you veggies out there, plenty of options for you! We started with the spring rolls, because come on, I gotta try every spring roll! They were good, but didn't have any herb in them and I've come to enjoy a little basil or mint in my roll, however, still decently sized and the peanut sauce that accompanied was yummy. My friend ordered the Chicken Pho and I got the Tofu with Vegetables. Mine was good, not great, but I'll definitely get it again or try something else, and my friend slurped down his soup real quick. So the four stars you might ask? Well the price is unbelievable, seriously UNBELIEVABLE. I think my portion, which I had for two meals was like $5.50 and his soup was around $6.00 but the best part, they had Summit EPA for $2.20! Go here for at least a cheap beer and to check it out. Overall, the service was a little slow as we finished and the host/server/owner/whatever had disappeared. We had to find her and ask for a box to go, which was fine. I didn't care that it was slow since I was avoiding homework anyways, however, caution to those who are expecting a quicker turnaround, I have no idea if it is always like this or not. It was extremely empty when I went, so if it gets busy (gah again with the blinds!) beware. But now that I have stepped into this mysterious restaurant, I'll be back when I want higher than take-out Chinese quality but don't want the price that comes with it!

I've been going here since I was a kid, so I've got to admit I'm a little biased, but I love this place. The interior is lacking, but I think that plays a part in its charm. My favorite things about Saigon Uptown: EGG ROLLS (with the fish oil!) are to die for. Worth going here just for the egg rolls. Quiet atmosphere. Free parking in the back. Friendly staff - they recognize me at this point and chat with me, which makes me feel very welcome. As many others have said, don't expect to get in and out quickly. I never wait for my bill at the end of the meal - go up to the counter and ring the bell, they'll get you sorted out faster that way. Also, if you're a fan of spicy food, ask for 'extra spicy'
(4)Emily T.
Could these people be any cuter? The answer is no. Don't come to this place for atmosphere, but the food is great and the people who run this mom and pop restaurant are so kind and have prices that can't be beat. The food didn't take long to prepare and our total bill for two people was under $15!
(5)Ryan P.
I love this place, especially visiting with the old women that run it. The coconut curry is fantastic and the prices are great. 6-7 bucks gets you great dishes that you can tell have been homemade.
(4)Josh M.
From the time I came in somehow I knew I would get a bad meal, no other customers, funky smell ect! Sure enough it was awful, I ordered pork fried rice and I don't recommend it, never coming here again...

Saigon completely surprised me. Not much for eye candy, I've walked past the place a million times and was never tempted to go in. After a year of looking for a solid take-out/delivery close to home, I was blown away (and quite embarrassed by my own assumptions) by the tastiness of this little hole-in-the-wall. We got Broccoli and Cauliflower in Garlic Sauce, Spicy Mock Duck and Beef Curry, all at 'medium hot.' The curry is absolutely to die for--the perfect balance of heat and flavor in a smooth, nutty coconut sauce. The mock duck was excellent as well, and came with an array of delightful vegetables. My one qualm is that the broccoli and cauliflower were slightly overcooked for my vegetable standards (I like a good bite and vibrant color) but I also assume some responsibility, as I was quite late picking up my order. All in all, give it a try. I can't speak to service, but the take-out is exactly what I've been looking for. Plus, I got 3 dishes for only $20! Can't wait to try some more.

As others said, not going to win any design contests when you walk inside. Sometimes you find real gems in places with similar decor but this would not be one of them. It took 45 minutes to get our food, they forgot our soda, never filled the water, and generally seemed to be in another world. For a moment I thought the 2 up front staff were maybe cooking too, washing dishes perhaps and that was the delay but I did glimpse a man with lab goggles (yes, that was odd) in the back so my theory was proven wrong. And the food. Oh goodness, the food. Bad. I don't say food is bad too terribly often, it's more the service I get upset with but the tofu curry wasn't curry. It tasted vaguely of coconut in there... somewhere. The enormously large chunks of carrots and potatoes may have fooled some into thinking I was having a pot roast. Maybe it was a pot roast-- who knows. Also had Kung Pao tofu. Much better but very greasy. Oh, bright side, tofu was good in both dishes... it was just the sauces and other ingredients that could use a little brushing up! I'm so sad to have given it such a bad review because they really seemed like nice people. This experience taught me that when it has a 2.5 Yelp rating, there is probably a reason why.

I was dying for some pho and saw Saigon was close by, so I gave it a shot. The little old lady who runs the place is incredibly nice and personable. The window blinds were all pulled and the place was a little rundown, which is a perfect sign for a true pho fan. I read through the other reviews, and was confused. Mostly just because I wouldn't consider getting something beside pho and a few spring rolls at a Vietnamese restaurant. The downfall of the soup was that it didn't have tripe or tendon (just beef). This may be a good thing for an unadventurous Minnesota diet, perhaps. The atmosphere was perfect for a pho shop, the soup really hit the spot and I'll be back.

I have been coming here for twenty years and I live in Maple Grove. This is hands down the best Vietnamese restaurant in Uptown. The staff knows me and treats me like family, they are so wonderfully nice. I also always get the crispy pork egg rolls and the hot pot soup. They are fantastic. Everything here is actually amazing. The service isn't really that slow, even though the entire restaurant is run by two older women. It's obvious that each meal is prepared to order, so everything is guaranteed fresh and tasty. I can rant forever, I cannot find better egg rolls anywhere I go.. Whenever I am in Minneapolis I am not happy unless I get my Saigon egg roll fix, and you can bet hat everyone teases me since I refuse to go to any of the trendier spots over this place :) Love it, Love it Love it!

They have some of the best egg rolls I've ever had! And the fish sauce they serve them with is great. I go out of my way to pick up egg rolls from them. Their food is average though I honestly haven't tried too much of their menu. I like how they do their sesame chicken. They make it with plain breaded fried chicken and then a serving of sesame sauce on the side to dip it in. Their sesame sauce is one of the best I've had. Yes the service is slow, but to solve that problem I always order carry out. The older woman is very nice and even gave me tips on making my own egg rolls for this party we were having and sold me fish sauce for cheap.

These Vietnamese sisters do it old style and do it great. Food is excellent. Service is admittedly slow, but the food is worth the wait. You cant beat the rock bottom prices. Yes, dont go here if you are in a hurry (call ahead), but go here if you want great food. YUM!
(5)Amy L.
Gotta love simple Vietnamese that's cheap. No ambiance; the light is bright, the seats and tables are utilitarian. Grandma clearly runs the shop, and she runs a tight ship! I had the chicken chow mein and it was what I expected, though the noodles were a little greasy. The spring rolls were yummy, too. Grandma's one fault - she forgets that she needs to get paid. If you are on a schedule, ask for the check! Makes me think she spent some time in Scotland.

This is one of those places that proves to rule "you don't judge a book by its cover". It looks like an old dive, and the menus are yellow with age. Then you order, you get an obvious family feel from the staff including a lovely older woman. They are glad to help you out with anything you are not familiar with or questions you may have. The food was simply fantastic. I had the spring rolls and hot pot, my friend had vegetable soup and Vietnamese coffee. All the food was really fantastic and considering the low prices the portions were quite large. I will be going back regularly for sure and would be suprised if anything on the menu was even average.
(4)Brooke S.
I had an opportunity to visit this place recently and the restaurant is not very fancy, but the Vietnamese food was great! I had the pork fried spring rolls and the pho (beef). The spring rolls were exceptional and so was the beef pho. Do note that the menu shows a lot of Chinese food items, but I would suggest the Vietnamese items. The server was an older woman mentioned in other reviews and was very attentive and helpful. In addition, the prices were very reasonable! A great little spot for Vietnamese!
(4)Brian T.
This is the best Vietnamese food in Mpls.
(5)Jacob H.
This place is the kind of place that I go to when home is too far away. It's the kind of restaurant I want to share with everyone I know and like. I would even recommend it to people that I don't like. The pork egg rolls and wontons are delicious and simple. I would say my favorites are the sesame chicken (I've eaten this dish in almost every Asian restaurant I've been too and these guys make it the best) and beef in black bean sauce (if you want something with more vegetables). The mango smoothies will make a man go "whoopee!" And I think they will have the same affect on women. Really this place is my favorite and the old lady Lynn that runs the joint with her family is very kind. I asked her son and he said she works 365 and 10 or more hours a day. Hope u get to experience this restaurant and family. The other regular customers that are here to dine in or order out seem to be just as pleased as me.
