End up here for brunch when The Lowry is too packed. Great beer selection -- I'll take visiting beer snobs here when we are in Uptown (take them to Devil's Advocate when downtown). And a menu that isn't just playing it pub safe. A very good choice on weekend as I've never seen it packed. UPDATE -- Now our first choice because hate waiting at Lowry. $10 brunch items -- great huevos and biscuits and gravy with zero waiting and half full restaurant. We sit at the bar and always get great service -- tables available as well. One of the hidden gems if your pet peeve is waiting for a table at weekend brunch.

I like both Republic locations but I like this environment a little better. The darker bar, it's upstairs in Calhoun Square. The food here is good too and the drinks are great. Never had a problem with service and I've been here a few times.

After a couple of visits here for brunch, I've come to the conclusion that the food is just not as good here as it is at the Republic at 7 Corners. I'm always dissatisfied. Today I got the biscuits and gravy, which had a lot of potential but did not come with enough gravy and came with two completely overcooked, totally solid-yolk eggs. Also, it didn't come with ANYTHING else on the plate -- not even a piece of fruit. Odd. The BELT sandwich is not as good here either, and the version at 7 Corners is seriously one of my favorite dishes in all of Minneapolis. But the one here is put together poorly so that it just kind of falls apart on you and also comes with an overcooked egg (I've ordered it three times now -- all three came with an overcooked egg). In general, I just feel like the kitchen at this location does not take the care that is taken at the other store. The beer list, of course, is still super solid. And we will certainly still stop in from time to time -- sometimes the Uptown location is just more convenient for our plans that day. But it is definitely not my preference at this point.

After a not so impressive time at Sushi Tango, he suggested we go back to Republic. We were there a week ago and had a good time. I wanted a beer and dessert. He wanted a beer and fish tacos. For me, dessert was between either the salted caramel pot de creme or the chocolate torte, both $5. I asked the nice server which dessert she liked better. She recommended the chocolate torte and was very excited about it. Chocolate torte, it is! Out comes the chocolate torte, on a plate drizzled with caramel sauce. The torte was also garnished with powdered sugar. After swallowing my first bite, I couldn't understand why the server got all excited over a simple Duncan Hines warm brownie? That's exactly what it tasted like. He thought so, too. We finished the dessert, only cause we were still hungry, lol. Note to self: If they suggest you try their chocolate torte for dessert, look the other way.

Fearing the worst after the Independent closed, I find Republic to be a welcome addition to Calhoun Square. I've been here a few times now, for both food and drinks. I didn't have any set expectations of the food going in, but was pleasantly surprised. Love the spinach and artichoke dip, ricotta fritters, and the B.E.L.T. (BLT with egg, runny and delicious against the crisp, buttery wheat bread). Brunch here is also a win. Love the huevos rancheros, yum! And if you try the build your own Bloody bar (which admittedly doesn't look impressive), you'll find a house-made bacon Bloody Mary mix. Or they have Bull Run coffee if you need a pick-me-up. I like that they divided the bathrooms into men's and women's, as the Independent's whole unisex thing was just odd. It's a shame that they got rid of the outdoor patio area, but at the same time I suppose it makes sense to add more indoor seating. The happy hour is pretty fantastic and worth checking out. They also have a decent variety of brews and regularly rotate in new ones. The south side of Uptown tends to attract douchey clientele, but Republic seems to be a refuge from their kind, at least for the time being.

Good. Not great. Terrible service. Drinks took 20 minutes to come. Food=30+. Nice local beer selection. Average food. If you're looking for a new spot to try, this is not worth the risk.
(2)Dale H.
I went to Republic for the first time last night, and I will definitely be back. Great food, great drinks. -PROS- Fantastic drink selection. I went with a Woodchuck Oak Cider and was not disappointed. Aioli sauce is fantastic and is a great compliment to their fries. Burgers are very tasty -CONS- Pricier than some better places, like Blue Door Pub or Shamrocks. Burgers come with a small salad, and orders of fries (while delicious) cost extra. Though you do get an order for two. Loud, depending on when you go.

Knocking Republic down a star - they've done away with their happy hour on Friday and Saturday nights, and I've had a few sub-par food experiences since my last review. Step up your game, guys!
(3)Melissa S.
I was with a large group (20+ people) that had told Republic we'd be there at 5 on Saturday. We ended up showing shortly after 3 prepared for a wait because we got done really early. The staff at Republic handled it incredibly well. The bar manager seated us immediately, and said they had staff coming in shortly before 5 to handle the group and apologized in advance for the slow service. Well, I never would have known. The service was quick and friendly, and we had a great time. Thanks! You guys are pros.

This is one of my happy hour rotation stops. The happy hour used to be slightly better, but I can dig it. $2 off every beer from 4-6pm They always have a beer of the day for $3 all day. They have about 50 beers on tap and they organize the beer menu by type, alcohol content, and price, all which make me happy because then I can choose the beer with the most alcohol at the cheapest price. What can I say, it's happy hour for a reason right? I've had pretty good service at the bar and bar area. Once in a while if it seems surprisingly busy it might take a while, but everyone seems generally happy as well. For food, I've only had the artichoke dip and guacamole, both I appreciate because they are cheap happy hour food that isn't fries, gosh I hate fries. Other food looks pretty good and filling, a cheeseburger for $6, full-sized and I hear it's pretty good.
(4)Lorraine N.
Good dark bar/restaurant in uptown where the independent used to be--this place has a bigger beer emphasis and less on the cocktail vs. the independent but still very similar in my opinion. I was able to get a decent chocolate martini from the bartender and some goat cheese artichoke dip and also some walleye balls....very tasty and unique options....
(4)Alexander V.
I can absolutely understand the prior reviews about the inconsistent service here. We lucked out and got a server that was very attentive, but I could see that others were not so lucky. I went during happy hour on a Thursday. It was not busy at all, maybe a dozen or so people in a large space. The drink menu was very good. It surprised me quite a bit. Lots of things I've never heard of, all categorized by type. The hard cider list is refreshing. The food was also good. I had the bison burger, and like another review said, sub-out the cheese that comes with it for another cheese type. I didn't do this and definitely found out that the cheese overpowers the burger. Still good, but it could've been great. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested.
(4)Meagan L.
Good beer list, fun atmosphere for a drink with friends. Make it for happy hour if you can! Their tacos are spicy and delicious!
(4)Erica E.
Great beer list. Trivia multiple times a week. Solid food, though I must say their poutine is not traditional Canadian poutine, but still tasty! Great place to meet up for drinks.
(4)José K.
Like study hall, but with cocktails.
(3)DeAnna J.
I really really like. I'm a total beer girl. Craft beers and dirty martinis. Weird, I know. Anywho, great beer selection. My first time there was with my friend. We sat down during the day, around high noon. Place was dead, only us at the bar. A few at the high tops. We each had a shot of Fireball, don't ask why. LOL. And some beers. We were going to get some grub, but had to be somewhere. I will definitely be back and will upgrade my review then! ^_^
(4)Tiffany L.
Went here for Memorial day brunch. The only place that offered breakfast at 1:30 on a Monday! I'm thinking only because it was a holiday.. It was a self seat place and we choose one right next to the windows. It took the server a while before we got our menus and orders in. We had to wait a good halfhour before our food came out and considering the food we ordered was just breakfast and two burgers I really didn't think it should have taken so long. Our waitress also got our order wrong. My brother and I ordered the eggs how you like it. That meant a whole plate full of breakfast foods instead the waitress only got our egg order in and we ended up having to wait for the food to be cooked while the other 3 people we came with finished eating their dishes. They were nice enough to apologize and comp our two dishes adding the extra star other wise 1 star would have been rewarded for the bland food, poor selection, and bad service.
(2)Mai Y.
If possible, go to the Republic in West Bank. Way better service, even though all the food & drink are generally the same. First time I came here was a Friday night. Surprisingly, the place was NOT packed like the one in west bank. That being said, I thought our waiters would be a little more on point. It seemed like we had 4 different waiters that night...1 who took our order, 2 to deliver beer/drinks, and 1 more to hand us our food & bills. You can only imagine how they mixed up our orders...they gave me fries instead of salad and charged me more for it. They mixed up our beer orders and overcharged my other friend. Maybe they were understaffed that night? Or something wasn't working properly? Who knows. I'll give this place a try again when I'm in the area (I just love the Republic), but I'll pick the West Bank location over the Uptown location anytime.
(3)Anjali C.
Have been here twice now. Once was on a Friday night which a little crowded and loud for my taste, but ohhhhhh what speedy service and yummy food. I had the veggie tacos and my boyfriend had the kale quinoa salad. Both were delicious. We had some Surly smoked IPA on tap, Dumpster Fire I think was the name of it. We were in and out within 45 minutes on a very busy Friday night. I was impressed. Second time we went for brunch on a Sunday when it was totally empty and had the bloody bar for $5... Delicious!!! I had some breakfast pizza thing with an egg which was delish and filling. A friend had the chocolate pancakes (good but very rich) and the breakfast tacos were another hit. We also had fries with homemade ketchup and hollandaise sauce to dip them in. Nice spot in Calhoun square to grab a quick bite and a beer with speedy, friendly service. We will be back often!
(5)Brandon N.
Steak salad - steak was done perfectly. Burger - tasty burger that is much better than average. Good selection house wine, the white was delicious. Great selection of beers, craft and normal. Service was great even considering it was a loud bar atmosphere later in the evening. Good food considering pick-up bar atmosphere. Not a great spot for intimate conversation but does the trick to get the night started. Brava.

Loved the ambiance at Republic, and very convenient (if tempting) location next to LA Fitness, ideal for some brewskis after a hard workout. Our waitress was awesome and very attentive. Wasn't a fan of their tap selection, particularly Belgians, so I settled for a Stout. They also have free wireless so we were able to sit with our laptops and do some work (they need plugs on the walls.... I understand its not Starbucks but it would be handy). It's a little overpriced but overall a fine place to go for happy hour.
(4)Troy M.
This place feels off the beaten path, yet it is in the heart of Uptown. This is my go to place for a chill afternoon on a rainy autumn Saturday, when I want some killer craft beer and great grub. This place is a hipster hang, the actual hip, not the trying to be hip but looking like a suburban import. I haven't seen any frat boys or whoo girls here, so it's my respite from those types. Service has always been good and staff is knowledgable about what they have on tap.
(5)Pip C.
Good food, good vibe, decent prices. I also like the Republic because it's in the heart of Uptown but it's not as crazy as some other Uptown establishments. If you just want an app or drink and don't feel like wanting 20 minutes for a drink, the Republic is the place to go. Service has always been good too.
(4)Ke J.
My experience at this place was pretty disappointing to say the least. The food was ok but it was the worst customer service experience I've had in uptown mpls. I waited for over 20 min before someone even brought me a menu at the bar. I wasn't greeted and not to mention other patrons were. I had to ask for everything nothing was offered. Big let down after a friend recommended the place

When Sargent Preston's closed up shop a little part of me quietly grieved for all the fish bowls that I would never be able to drink again with my college friends on their patio. Maybe it was this sorrow that prevented me from ever trying out Republic that opened in its space. Ironically, when another one of my favorite post-collegiate watering holes in Uptown also met an untimely demise Republic's owners saw it as an opportunity to open shop in another busy area. Since they opened up an outpost near my neck of the woods I decided that it was finally time to check out what this place had to offer. Fresh off its grand opening last week, my friend and I decided to grab dinner here and a few brews to wash everything down. The atmosphere of the place is a little rough; you can definitely tell they just opened recently. I've never been to the Seven Corners location so I can't tell if they're going for the same vibe but the space seemed a little empty. Dining space aside, the service for the evening was great and really friendly. Republic has an extensive list of brews to choose from (they also have Steel Toe Beer on tap which is a huge plus) and also has a really great happy hour menu which runs daily. For dinner I ordered a turkey sandwich which had apples and fontina cheese and tasted fantastic. Since burgers/sandwiches only come with a side salad (and also because I was starving), my buddy and I decided to split an order of sweet potato fries. The order of fries was enough for two people and came with seasoned sour cream (which was awesome). It's nice to see the prime space being utilized again in Calhoun Square as well as having a Republic location closer to my house. Although I was hesitant to try out Republic because it took over my beloved Preston's space, I'm severely regretting doing so.

Amazing self serve bloody bar and the best fish tacos I've had in the Midwest! Great service, very accommodating, and wonderful chill atmosphere. Good place to have a conversation over brunch and drinks.

Republic in Uptown was SUCH a good idea. It's a lot more down to earth and not as overdone as some of the restaurants on this block (*ahem Chino Latino). On the second floor of Calhoun Square, Republic grabs a prime spot overlooking Lake and Hennepin. It was nice to look out the windows and see the bustling city below. Also a bonus when the annual loppet closes down the street and you can watch from a table inside. The happy hour here is decent, but tedious. $3 for American beers that were less than $7. The food can be a steal as well. We really loved the guacamole, even though it was a tad on the oniony side. The spinach artichoke dip was spot on delicious! Our waitress was Minnesota nice and genuinely tried her best to get every table top-notch service.
(4)Lina H.
It's definitely an upgrade from what it use to be (the independent). I came in on a Saturday night for a late night happy hour drink that starts at 10pm. $3 rail and $3 American draft. The service was good. Our waitress was tentative and fast unlike the waitress at prime bar. The crowd seemed pretty chill. The lights were dim and I appreciate the restroom up lift!
(4)Ngoc N.
I might be one of the few, but I was sad to see The Independent go. Maybe not the bathrooms. Went to Republic last night for happy hour and was impressed by what they've done to the place. The reno turned out great and the space looks a lot less dingy and actually bigger than when it was the Independent. Anyways, I thought this places' reputation was for it's beer. Unfortunate, but our waitress (we were sitting next to the bar) readily admitted she had very little knowledge about beers and it was a constant back and forth between her and the bar. We could've just shouted a lil to talk directly to the bartender.... I respect her for admitting to not knowing...but I expect you to just know! She barely knew the happy hour deals too. At the end of the day...it was all so-so. Lots of options if you like beer but you gotta know what you want?

Burgers. Check. Fries. Check. Bloody Mary Bar. Check.

Oh, it's okay, it's never been a remarkable experience for me, I just.. I just want the people of Minneapolis to know that the last time I was there I ordered a Coke (it was midnight on a Monday and whatever I don't owe you an explanation for not wanting a beer at the time) and the bartender asked if Pepsi was okay. ALL HANDS ON DECK PEPSI IS NOT OKAY BUT YOU'RE GONNA GET IT IF YOU GO TO REPUBLIC IN CALHOUN SQUARE So. Beware.
(3)Meggan E.
What a nice addition to Uptown. A bar for us in our late 20s and up, replaces the fun and wild at night but no longer with us, Independent. I love the wood and brick update to the space. Looks super open. Low lights and cozy at night. No TVs though if you want to catch a game. Gone is the low slung bar on one side. Huge bar in the middle, huge mix of high and low tops. The high tops make for the noisier bar scene. The back low tops make for a more intimate scene. Huge tap list! If you're a beer lover, you will find something. I'm not but still found some good choices, and it's a full bar. I give it four stars for now only because I wasn't overly impressed with our apps. The ricotta fritters were more like mozzarella sticks, and the guac was tame. The prices do seem pretty reasonable for gastropub fare so will have to return and try some burgers or other small plates.
(4)Christopher V.
The Republic is a cool place to go for almost any occasion. The bartenders and servers are knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. They have a great regional beer selection and the food has never disappointed. The dinning room is trendy and good for groups; however, if you're on a date, make sure you get a table by the window. People watching on Lake St. can be a good time!
(4)Patty C.
Excellent! Great food and great beer selection. Good atmosphere and bocce!! Fun! Beer snobs will like it here. They have another location in town that we cant wait to try.
(5)Hannah B.
Hands down one of the best places for beer in Minneapolis. I like that they always have something unique. Being able to mix and match flights is great! The food is also very good, fresh, and tasty. If the service was more spot on every time I would give it five stars, but they are often understaffed.
(4)Trisha L.
Food was bland & over cooked. Got the steak frites which was 4 teeny pieces of rare on the inside burnt to a crisp on the outside steak with an oversized portion of bland burnt fries. I was still starving after choking the steak nuggets so I thought screw it, I'm gonna order dessert. Can't go wrong with that. Well for $8 I was hoping for something better than a pre frozen straight out of the box wedge of chocolate cake that would've had no flavor without the sauce that was drizzled on top. Maybe they have a great brunch, but dinner was a flop.
(2)Grahame B.
When I heard Republic was moving into the doomed Northwest corner of Calhoun Square, I had high hopes. For whatever reason, that's been one of the toughest spots for local eateries to take root, which seemed strange to me, as it's a prime location with great visibility. I'm familiar with Republic's West Bank store, and I've been to Excelsior's 318, which is owned by the same people, and I definitely appreciate their commitment to providing good food and drink to their customers. I expected this one to be no different, and I was right. For a few dollars more than a fast food combo, you can have a delicious gourmet burger (and it's 1000 Hills beef, so you can feel good about what you're eating), as well as a small side salad with a slightly-spicy garlic chipotle vinaigrette...or something like that. Their fish tacos are also excellent. I work about a block away, so I've taken many a lunch break there, and I've never been disappointed. Republic boasts an impressive beer selection, with a nice mix of local craft brews and more widely-known national brands. They have great happy hour specials. With no TVs to distract you, it's a great place to take a date...at least, a date that you're interested in actually talking to.
(4)Sarah S.
Normally...I love the variety that republic offers in terms of excellent beers. It's a great scene for any beer lover. The food is only okay and the service can be a bit unpleasant. That doesn't stop me for going in for a beer sampler on a regular basis. However, we are already passing up on going to republic due to the Minnesota beer only thing they have going on. It's worn it's welcome with our desire to branch out from the local fare. Let's change it back!
(4)Shannon G.
Love the brunch here. They have the best build your own bloody Mary bar (in my opinion), they even have a bacon bloody mix. I also love their jam! It's made locally and is sooooooo good! The only complaint I have is that when bringing my friends here once our toast was burnt (even the best jam can't fix that), and the gravy on the biscuits and gravy was scarce. When my friend asked for extra gravy they brought him some, but then charged him extra.
(4)John A.
Low ceilings, dark, boring ambiance. I felt like I was in my grandma's basement even though its located on the 2nd floor of some prime real estate. Drinks are OK, although the menu offered nothing of interest. A mix of locally grown or sourced ingredients identified by the farm name is not reason enough for me to be impressed. No reason that I could see to come back here.
(2)Amanda W.
This is the restaurant that has me going back to Calhoun Square-I love the 7 Corners location, but it's always tough to get over there and park, so I was thrilled by the uptown location opening. Republic is definitely my go-to for a weekend happy hour-it's perfect to bring your friends AND parents. My mom (and I) especially love their 8oz wine pour-and during happy hour that wine is only $3, so it can't be beat. I've also had some of their cocktails and loved them. The Italian Greyhound ( vodka, red berries, grapefruit, and Campari) is probably my favorite, though. It's perfectly refreshing and not too sweet. Food-wise, I LOVE their fries, served with aioli and homemade ketchup that they need to bottle up for sale asap. I also dig their $6 burger special during happy hour-any burger is $6!! Favorites include the brie w/ red wine reduction and the bleu cheese/bacon burger. They come with a little side salad so you feel slightly healthy after indulging in a monster burger. I've had nice service, here, too. All in all a great addition to uptown!
(4)Drew W.
Nice space. Happy hour is pretty basic for uptown. Bartenders are pretty friendly for the heart of uptown. Overall is ok. Space feels nice I think it will suffer in the summer with no outdoor space...seems to be the trend now
(4)Steven D.
Heard they had a good happy hour here and that's exactly what my coworkers and I came here for. Definitely a large selection of beers (20+) and I think most of them were on draft. A lot of burgers were ordered around the table from the locals, so must be good. I ordered the fish tacos and a side of fries instead - need to watch that waistline! I liked the fish tacos even though it lacked some flavor. The slaw on top made it refreshing and light. The fries were saltier than I'd like, but man was the home made ketchup a nice surprise and delicious! It was a change and had more of a tomato (go figure!) sauce texture with a bit of sweetness. Would definitely come back here! There isn't a lot of street parking, so opt for one of the two parking lots nearby - there's one right across the street. Oh yeah, I don't know if it's just cause it was hot that day, but the bathroom was like a sauna. Have someone hold the door open!
(4)Mike H.
1st time at any Republic. Hit up the newer Uptown location. Man do I miss my ol' Independent! Oh well. The Republic has a nice layout, plenty of tables and cleaned up the place really nice. Bathrooms aren't silly or funky just standard and super clean. No outside smoke room, blocked off by a black steel fence, Remember that in the Independent? The new place looks really nice. Clean and neat. $3 happy hour 8oz is great deal! Ordered the Artichoke Dip. Average. Nothing special. Couldn't really dip your chips in it..it was too clunky and lumpy. I ordered the Garlic Confit burger. Done perfect as I ordered "Medium" but only came with a bunch of lettuce, no fries. Burger was fine but nothing great. I'd say the quality of food was better at a Champps. For anyone ordering Salads, don't worry about Ranch dressing. They don't have any. Yes you read that right, no Ranch at this place. I'd go back because I've always loved the crowds at this place, good place for drinks, average for food.
(3)Sarah M.
Great beer selection and interesting menu. We came for dinner on a Saturday night, and though it was late, it was a little too dark in the dining room to see our food. When the charcuterie platter was delivered, I actually couldn't tell what the little jar of cranberries was because it was so dark. The darkness was also uninviting, especially when the restaurant was mostly empty. I've been to the 7 corners location and loved it, took my out of town friends here. But I left feeling like the food wasn't quite worth the prices, even though it's all relatively inexpensive. We ordered the charcuterie board (lots of meat, but too much salt on crostinis to eat with salty meats), burgers, MN Po boy walleye sandwich (lots of bread masking flavors, nothing too exciting). The other thing that was confusing was the menu layout. I felt like it took me twice as long to find what I wanted because it was sorted by food type (Vegetarian, Fish, Pork, Beef, Poultry) and had several different types of dishes in each category, for example a flatbread was listed in three categories but in different places. Serving staff was a little lax, and it took quite a while to give our order and get our bill especially with hardly anyone else even in the restaurant.
(3)Gregg M.
Here are four reasons I approve of the Uptown Republic: -VEGGIE BURGER - black beans and avocado? It's a no-brainer to me. Yes, please! -The ambiance is sexy and attracts an equally attractive, diverse crowd. -The beer selection is more mature than the color coding system at Williams. I recommend the Trois Pistoles. -They opened up the restaurant and got rid of that nasty patio. It is time for someone to call it - Calhoun Square is back!
(4)Matt H.
Great bar and great happy hour. This is one of the good late night happy hours, especially since it is available on Friday night (8-midnight). That being said there are some areas for improvement. First it is nice that they have a healthy beer selection and I like their featured beers list. This is also where I see improvement however. Their happy hour reduces the price of "all" beers by $2. Apparently this does not include the featured beers which I found out the second time I was here. Normally this would not leave a high of an impression for me except the only reason I ordered the featured beer was due to the suggestion of my server who did not warn me of the pricing difference only to leave me surprised with my bill. That being said the food is great (I ordered goat cheese dip my first time there and the walleye balls on my second outing) and as long as you stick to the happy hour you will have a great time at a great price for a Friday night in Uptown.
(3)Megan W.
This is my BAR in Uptown. A much welcome respite from the douchiness of most of the bars in this area, Republic feels like a cozy little hobbit hole. That is, if the little folk of the Shire were fond of page after page of interesting craft beer, and only listened to Minneapolis music. Happy hour is from 4-6 and 10-12 everyday. I highly recommend the $3 taps, the amazing $5 fish tacos, and the $3 beer of the day for the four hours in between happy hours.
(5)Melissa N.
Great beer selection, ok food. The food nor the beer was worth the wait. We sat down and who I assume was the hostess, took twenty minutes just to give us menus. Once we ordered drinks it took a good ten minutes to get them. This was a Saturday afternoon and it was not very busy. At one point the table ordered a second round and one of 4 drinks came right away, the rest of us waited ten more minutes for ours. We will not be going back.

A beer bar though and through with two happy hours 4-6 and 10-midnight. Coupled with the happy hours down at Primebar this corner of Calhoun Square has been restored to a little more refined version of it's former glory days as Figlio and the Independent. Like what they have done with the place, it's rustic and stoney. It gets a little loud as the room fills up for late night happy hour and if you're coming here to watch a game, well you're out of luck, there isn't a screen in the entire place. A Special Tip: There is a hidden gem on the menu for beer lovers. The last item on the list is ,"8oz pours of any 3 different beers" for $10 (Amazing!). A Special Tip* for those taller than 5'8 and under 6'4 or with tall torsos: The tables to the right of the bar looking out from the entrance have Edison lightbulb pendants that hang at your eye level. I was here with a large group of relatively taller people and we tried to look at each other through lit lightbulbs across the table but in the end we had to be high maintenance and ask to move to another table. The good news is this is an easy fix.
(4)Abbie F.
The burgers are amazing, especially with turkey. Always a great selection of beers on tap and who can beat the beer of the day, love it! Theie happy hour is amazing and twice a day...what can be better! Also, the bartenders are awesome! Friendly without being pushy, I'm so happy they have a location in Uptown!!

I am a big fan of their Cedar-Riverside location and was quite excited to hear that they would be opening a location in Uptown. It is on the second floor of Calhoun Square, tucked in the corner. The space is really pretty- lots of exposed stone, big windows (but no drafts! A miracle!), a big bar, lots of high tops, and a few booths and other more random seating arrangements. I will miss the sprawling patio of the other location in the summer, but for winter this will work. The happy hour special is the same- $3 beer (other cheap drinks, but I've only had beer), cheap food. I am still somewhat confused by their food menu. Some things seem overpriced, some seem like steals, but none have blown me away with their tastiness. I'm hoping with a larger kitchen they can do some great things. Overall, I am just thankful to have delicious, cheap beer in an atmosphere that does not scream uptown. Thanks Republic, I'll be back soon!

I will start off by saying that we really didn't come here to eat. Other than the french fries (which were quite good) our main goal was to have some beer and meet up with my wife's friends. They do have quite a good selection of beers (props to them for not caving in and serving the generic macro-brews). Fairly logical grouping for the beers (except for the combination of Sours and Ciders, which makes no sense at all), both local and nationwide. Best deal in the house is the beer flight, no measly little 4 ounce pours that you will find in most places, this place gives you a healthy 8-oz pour of 3 different beers for 10 bucks!

Excellent [local] beer selection and a super sexy crowd, but good god it's loud. I felt like I was screaming at my friends, and they were only sitting 1-2 feet from me at a table in the corner of the bar. It's a really cool space, but the open ceiling and rock walls don't do a lot to help the acoustics. Their late night happy hour is awesome, and it includes some food. The view of uptown is pretty excellent with large windows facing the corner of Lake and Hennepin. Service is not the best, but as good as I expected on a crowded Saturday night just before Christmas. Rock on, Republic!

Tried out Republic tonight... I thought it was pretty good, nothing to write home about but altogether tasty. They have a pretty decent happy hour- 4-6 everyday, which is nice. We missed the happy hour and just went for dinner. The ambiance was nice... Nice decor etc, not many changes from the Independent, looks like it's still under some construction, minor at the most, which wouldn't really bother any patrons. One issue with the environment- very dark. We almost sat at a table were it was virtually pitch black... Which I guess would work well if your date was butt ugly... But I was with my handsome fiancé.... So we sat near the window. Decent selection of cocktails/beers; we each got the Italian Greyhound, which was a greyhound with berry infused vodka. Jt was pretty good, sweet, arrived in a pint glass... I didn't feel as thought the alcohol content was very high but who knows. Later I ordered the house white wine which I thought was pretty good and was a pretty large glass for a serving I wine. We ordered the ricotta fritters, which were pretty good. Unique flavor combination, worth trying. Came with 4 pieces in an order, which was perfect for two of us. (fried cheese... Don't need a ton of that). We each ordered a sandwich for the entree; we were informed by the waiter that all sandwiches come with a side of dressed mixed greens, which I really liked. My fiancé ordered the French dip (and added greyure cheese) and he said it was really good, although he felt it was somewhat awkward and difficult to eat. I got the black bean burger with guacamole, which I thought was tasty, a good size, and I appreciated that it was a house made burger (not just a frozen Boca burger like some restaurants serve). For desert we got the black and tan- the presentation was cute- came in a mini beer glass, made to look like a "black and tan" beer. It was tasty; basically very pudding like, with the whipped cream, mousse, and pudding. Sort of small; good for two, but more than two people probably wouldn't be enough. The flavor was good though. Overall... Great uptown location, hopefully it lasts. Good food, bad lighting, good service... I enjoyed it but I don't know that I'd go back right away.... Probably try some other new restaurants in the area first. Except for the brunch.... I am pretty curious to try their brunch.....

I recently went the the Republic for happy hour with friends. The fish tacos are highly recommended as the pork tacos were lacking flavor. The republic gets 4 stars for its great craft beer selection. I was happy to find 3 nitro beers on tap. The only thing keeping it from getting five stars is the hectic location. It is comfortable when you get inside but getting to the Republic in busy uptown isn't fun.

I've always had a good experience here. I especially like the rotating $3 beers that are always being offered! They have pretty good happy hour prices as well and offer their happy hour on weekdays nights which seems fairly hard to find! I've only had dinner here once but when I did I had the turkey sandwich that had roasted apples, delicious turkey, cheese and a bourbon bacon jam on. SO GOOD! I had it with the side salad, which was simple but I enjoyed. I also tried my friends French fries with their homemade ketchup. The deserts they have are pretty tasty as well. I had both the Carmel pot de creme and the chocolate torte and enjoyed them both (they taste good when you eat them together as we'll! Happy to see that this place has stayed opens, unlike many of the neighboring tenants in Calhoun square!

So this is the second time I have been to the Republic in Uptown since it opened. The food has been awesome both times, but the service was amazing this time, they must have cleaned up the attitude of the wait staff since opening. This time I joined a friend for lunch. The server was super friendly, prompt and helpful. She kept our waters full and was quick to clear our plates when we were finished. I ordered the Wild Acres Smoked Turkey, which looked fantastic when it came to the table and tasted even better. The sandwich really had a full range of flavors that paired perfectly together. It was accompanied with a side salad, that was light but tasty. I will return for the $6 burger happy hour and cheap crafty beers soon!

So I wanted to give this place 5 stars. I should have read the reviews first of my fellow Yelpers. But having been to the 7 corners location serval times( which is awesome) I thought this would've been a sure thing. It wasn't. Chalk it up to bad management I guess. First the pros. Really good tap list. Great happy hour. Food, not sure only ate the fries, but others were happy with theirs. Cons waitress was very disinterested. You'd never know she worked for tips. Next when the bill there was a problem with pricing. This is what irked me. So they rewrote the happy hour wording. It used to be $6 and under $3. Now it's $2 off ALL beer menu price. Apparently I ordered beers on the feature chalk board. That's funny cause it didn't say features and you menu says ALL. So they wouldn't change it. Now I get it when it's hard to find good help, but when your pulling crap like that ah ah. That's upper management problems. This place won't get fixed until that changes. Next time I'm going to 7 corners.

Great happy hour! Love their Quinoa burger.

My roommate and I go to Republic almost every weekend for breakfast and a beer. The Huevos Rancheros is easily both of our favorite thing on the menu. It is in a great location in Calhoun Square, and has windows on all sides of the restaurant giving it a nice feel during day or night. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that sometimes the service can be very slow. Overall, one of my favorite bars in all of the Twin Cities.

Gross. 3 out of the 4 brunch items we had were terrible and it took an hour and a half to complete the service.

Are you kidding me - seriously. I need to open a restaurant in Uptown. It should be easy all I have to do is find some Bartenders and wait staff that aren't rude and actually give a sh%t about making some tips. Public Service Message: If you are opening a restaurant in Uptown please make sure the service is good and that you have reliable people. Republic, I'm coming back because I want to see if what happened the first time was a fluke or if you really are going to go out of business in the next few months. Here's the scoop... The fiancé and I decided to give this place a go for dinner one night a few weeks ago. We walked in, sat at the bar and we were met by a lovely chap that slapped two coasters on the bar said nothing and looked at us like, "what do you want and why are you bothering me." So, like any confused customers we asked to see some menus as they have a pretty large tap selection. As it turns out we managed to finish the entire transaction of ordering a beer without a word from this nice fellow who clearly has no business working in a service industry. The theme of our dining experience was - JUST ASK. We had to ask for beverages, we had to ask for menus, we had to ask to be waited on, we had to ask for condiments, and finally we asked for our bill. To top it all off someone that looked to be the manager came over and asked us how things were going as we clearly did not like our food. I had the French dip which was horrible and the fiancé had the walleye - we didn't eat much of either. Honestly, I didn't know what to say. I wanted to say, " terrible, the bartender has said nothing to us the entire time we've been here, the food sucked, and now you're almost rubbing it in because you've been standing there the entire time watching this go down and not said a word." Instead I'm pretty sure I said, "everything was fine we'll take our bill." Maybe it wasn't good that I didn't tell him about our experience, but seriously if it's already that bad my comments are not going to persuade you to make it better - especially since you watched it go down. Anyway, we received our bill and went downstairs to Prime Bar to get something to eat and enjoy a drink. I really, really don't want to go back but my fiancé feels like we should give it another shot so if it turns out better I'll figure out how to update this review. If it doesn't I hope the Republic dies a slow and painful death in Uptown because there is nothing I hate more than feeling like an unwelcome visitor at place that is providing a service.

Giving it 2 stars because of the beer selection. I've been there multiple times and the services was absolutely horrible. Our last visit I watch at least two groups come in after us, sit down, order, and get their food before we did. At one point our sever said our order should be right up, then i was at least another 10 minutes. It took at least 45 minutes for two simple brunch items. It was only after I ask to just pay for our drinks and cancel the food order that it was brought out. Then it was cold and disappointment. We also watched another couple wait at least 20 for anyone to even help them. They did comp our entire order but we will NEVER GO BACK!!

Even though I was told I probably would hate this place, it was very inviting. The space is actually fairly inviting, although a little darker than I'd have hoped. We only got drinks, but the bartender was very on her game. We were surprised at the beer selection. They carried quite a few local taps, Lift Bridge, Surly, and Steel Toe to name a few. Although it's pretty mandatory in Uptown. I'm just glad the clientele wasn't exclusively hipster.

I'm so glad they opened another outpost of this excellent gastropub in Uptown. The original (to the Twin Cities, I think the true original is in Oklahoma City) is located in Seven Corners. Although that one is much closer to my house, it is more of a college hangout, for obvious reasons. If you're in the mood for a more Uptown-y crowd, head on over to Calhoun Square. If you time it right, happy hour will make you very happy indeed. You can score a great, grass-fed burger or even greater fish tacos for a measly $5!! We're not talking some rinky-dink thumbnail sized taco like what you'd get at Barrio, no sir. It's a generously sized filet of tender, marinated fish on soft corn tortillas with fresh pico de gallo and cabbage slaw. It's a steal at the regular price of $8. There are tons of reviews detailing the extensive beer selection, so I won't rehash too much, but this is a great fit for Uptown in the old Independent space. They updated the decor, which was greatly needed. It feels cozy, but modern, just what you'd expect from a gastropub. As for seating, the last time I was there, it was a Sunday afternoon in a blizzard, but it was good that we had a table set up for our group in advance. I can't tell you how hard it is to score a table at 8 PM on a Friday, but all I can say is it will be worth the wait.

I like it, although admittedly, the West Bank one is better. Both don't have TVs, but you don't get that feeling at the West Bank one. Here, you kind of feel like you're in a mall bar, only with better beer (way better) and slightly better food. The location doesn't help in that regard -- where it does help, though (as does the no TVs) is that if you're looking for a place on a Sat/Sun and there's a lot of sporting events going on, this place won't be flooded (whereas Prime, downstairs, might be). I hear the Bloodys (Marys) are good, but I haven't crushed one of those just yet. Beer selection is very good. If they keep Steel Toe Size 7 as a base option (they have been), I'd always open with that if you like hoppier beers. It's elite.

We love the breakfast! Will repeat over and over! Great beer selection and friendly staff. Uptown needs more casual places that are not trying to be too trendy! Very good addition to Calhoun Square!

Was here last night for happy hour, not too happy though. Beautiful bar, wood work and layout. Very dark inside. No real deals for happy hour unless you drink beer which I do not. $27 for four average cocktails doesn';t seem to be much of a happy hour. Chino Latino has better drinks.

Great happy hour specials. Good food and large craft beer selection.

We visited here on a Friday night. We both had the Fish and Chips. It was a a very generous portion. It was decent food, not great. The service was good. I've never really one to be bothered by noise level in a place but the music was especially loud for 7pm on Friday night in my opinion.

Service was a little inattentive but forgivable considering the high quality of everything else. Great food and beer, really great. I recommend the crab cakes, fish tacos, veggie sandwich and turkey burgers. Will be back again!!

Cool new Uptown bar. We stopped in for happy hour and it was a fun, busy spot with a decent HH menu and good cocktails. We'll definitely stop back in next time we are in the neighborhood.

Pretty unimpressed. I've been to West Bank location and it's much better. The service was pretty unfriendly. We sat at the bar and the bartender barely said enough to ask as what we wanted to drink. Our food was exceptionally unimpressive and actually made me sick. The guacamole was ice cold and clearly scooped with a big metal ice cream scoop out of the cooler and directly into a cup. I ordered the steak salad and took one bite of the steak and couldn't eat anymore. It was sour and smelled so bad I moved it off of my plate onto another plate. The bartender walked by it multiple times and never asked about it, even when she finally removed our dishes at the end of the meal. I nicely told her it was sour and inedible and she said she would let the kitchen know. She did not apologize, offer something else, or offer to remove it from our bill. Five minutes later what I assumed was a manager appeared to say they took the salad off of our bill and he thanked us for letting us know that the steak tasted bad. He mentioned that they were going to throw away the one remaining steak. Well, that's great, but a nice apology rather than a thanks for telling them their food was bad, would have been a bit better. Later that evening, I got sick. I don't usually write such bad reviews, but this was such an overall bad experience that I had to do it.
