According to their website, this place is know for - "Best Sushi In Minneapolis" and "Award Winning Japanese Cuisine". Really? Who's judging? My wife thought that this place had some of the freshest tasting fish while I was being reminded of the disgusting fish you would find at Kami in Apple Valley. We had a Spicy Yellow Tail Roll and a Spicy Tuna Roll and after one bite I told my wife, "I wish I had a Juicy Lucy right about now!" Best Sushi? Not even close! One last thing... The happy hour menu needs some attending to as well. Would I go back? Probably not!

Fantastic service. Some of the best Gyoza I've ever had. I ordered a gin on the rocks and got an very generous pour. High quality sushi with interesting specials. A bit on the expensive side but the quality and additional food options this place offers make it worth it. I plan to go back to try their rice/noodle bowls as well.

I haven't found a good Japanese restaurant owned by Japanese. This is something!!! Food was good and environment was great!

That was some fine fish eating. Thumbs up on all aspects. Nice outside seating to accommodate our pup (rare to get a sushi place where I can have my dog sitting with me), our waitress was attentive, the host was very kind, my water was filled every time it was near empty & in that humidity I drank 10-12 glasses. The price was fair & the fish was very pleasant. I was most impressed with their Saba. I'll be frequenting this sushi joint every time I'm showing at the Uptown Art Fair.
(4)Shira S.
The sushi was good. At the same time, it took 30 minutes for the staff to make three rolls for my friends and me on a Sunday night. I would go again but only if I was really craving sushi.
(3)Aaron S.
Absolutely delicious and hit the spot. In was craving ramen and sushi and Origami had both. I got the Salmon and Avocado roll and my wife who hates sushi tried one and loved it. The serving size was perfect for the price and my only regret is that I didn't order more items to try.
(5)D K.
Best ramen in the twin cities! Hands down. Had the tonkotsu- this time but looking forward to the miso and the shoyu. Service was amazing too. Sushi bar- done. Def a regular stop in the rotation!!!
(5)Alan H.
Ordered takeout. Food was of good quality. Didn't smell/taste fishy. Seemed fresh. I had a spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll as well as the edimame. The would be 4th star was taken away from my rating because the price-though on par with uptown establishments-too was pricey. Recently moving from NYC and having great Japanese restaurants I'm used to great quality Japanese food-this was not as good but comparable. But what I ordered here would have cost almost half in NYC. I will say the rolls here were larger than those I used to have at my NYC spots but not twice as large. Edimame seemed like it was frozen and then microwaved rather than steamed fresh. I might come here for the occasional dinner or happy hour but with these prices I can't make this place a regular spot.
(3)Seijen T.
Solid overall. Seated and served quickly on a Saturday night. Food was delicious, though maybe slightly overpriced. Top notch ultra friendly staff. Could see this becoming my "local" if I lived here.

I'm a big sushi eater and Origami Uptown (along with the original location in Downtown Mpls) consistently delivers the best experience. From the friendly, knowledgeable staff to the delicious food, it's the place to go in the Twin Cities for sushi. And if you like your sushi nigiri style, Origami has the best rice I've had outside of Japan. Perfect complement to the fish. Don't miss the Saba!
(5)Dwight C.
Wow! Enjoyed everything I ordered then left it up to the Chef for her to complete the evenings experience. Fish was fresh and artfully prepared. Friendly staff, and the real deal. I'll be back.
(5)Samreen S.
I think I've pretty much loved everything on their menu and it's always consistently delicious.
(5)Cynthia F.
Ate there twice in 2 days; would have eaten there more times if we had discovered this restaurant sooner! I am a tuna and salmon tartare fan, and their "ahi poke" and "lomi lomi salmon" are some of the best I have ever tasted. The salmon on my sushi was absoutely fresh and of the highest quality. The garden salad comes with a tasty soy dressing and includes broccoli. The garden salad with raw tuna, on the lunch specials, is SO GOOD it should be on the dinner menu as well, but I had it with the dressing that normally comes with their small garden salads, and I had that dressing on the side. Excellent wait staff; nice decor. Note: it's in the alley near the movie theatre, not directly on a street. You might need quarters for the parking meters.

Although I'm not a sushi fan, I will definitely visit Origami again. My sushi-loving friend raved about the old location in MInnetonka, so we decided to try out this location for late night happy hour yesterday The place was relatively quiet for a Friday night, but don't let that fool you. There is a pretty expansive and affordable late night menu, with plenty of non-sushi options for landlubbers like myself. The food was great but the service nudged this place to 5-stars. Our bartender helped explain a few unfamiliar items on the menu, and made recommendations that were excellent. Hopefully the staff is just as friendly and accommodating when it's more busy!
(5)Lisa S.
My friends and I like to stop here for our late night sushi treat. I have ordered the salmon sushi and sashimi, the pieces were fresh and delicious. I have ordered ikura sushi and sashimi. The sashimi was just placed on a plate and during happy hour, comes in a serving size of 3, for new people trying ikura be aware. I LOVE ikura so I had no problem eating it all but if you are just being introduced, other places typically put it in a cucumber type boat or cup. I think their sushi is better than Sushi Tango, Social House. Comparable to Tiger Sushi II. Almost as good as Hajime, up in Blaine. I have not had any of the rolls. I would rate this a 4.2 if I could give decimals. The bartender is friendly and attentive; as we typically eat our sushi at the bar.
(5)Nicole C.
We have eaten food from here twice. The first was the day after they opened. We sat in the lower level. The food was good, and the service was fine for a weekday early evening. We had some friends coming over on a Friday night so we decided to get takeout maki. We phoned in the order and when we arrived to pick it up, we were shocked to see there was an $8.50 "take-out" charge. We've heard of delivery charges, but a take-out charge was new to us. We understand they gave us wooden chopsticks and a plastic platter for the sushi, but nothing that would total anywhere close to $8.50. It would have been nice when we phoned in the order if they had at least mentioned the fee. So, 3.5 stars for food, but 1 star for the take-out policy. Next time we will just go to Wakame.

I am Japanese and am a Ramen connoisseur. I had Origami 's shoyu ramen last night, and it's the best ramen I've ever had in the Twin Cities. The noodle was al dente and the soup was clear and so tasteful. It had negi (green onion), shinachiku (bamboo shoots), spinach and yakibuta (pork roast slices)-traditional ingredients for Ramen. They even impressed me by serving Japanese pepper with Ramen, which is a must-have in Japan. A Plus!

When I heard that Origami was opening a location in Uptown, I was hoping that it wasn't going to be the mall variety like the one in Ridgedale. I suppose it had to be somewhat scaled down from the original one in Downtown Minneapolis by the Federal building. Turns out it's in the "alley" by the Lagoon Theater, right next to Bar Louie. You know, where they have the fire pits going all year long but people only want to sit there in the summer and fall. We walked in and looked around. We said hello to the bartender and thought we'd make our way to the sushi bar. The bartender stepped out and I said, "I guess you're pretty casual here, right?" He said the hostess was in the back so he motioned to another server to seat us. She immediately brought us upstairs to the "forgotten zone" and said, "Looks like you've got the whole place to yourselves!" We would be the only ones up there. I like to be where all the action is, or at least where there's some people so we requested the sushi bar instead. We decided on a couple sakes, our standard seaweed salad and the Nabe Yaki Udon soup without the sunny side-up egg. The soup really hit the spot since it was such a cold, rainy day. The fish cakes and shrimp tempura were displayed assymetrically on top. I really like the fish broth soups with udon noodles and spinach. We thought that, since we're sitting at the sushi bar, we should probably at least order one roll. After ordering the Sari roll, which has spicy yellowfin tuna, tempura flakes, burdock, and kaiware wrapped in tuna and avocado, topped with a dollop of orange mayo, I think I'll stick to the purely traditional sashimi which only has rice and sushi grade fish. All this spicy mayo, avocado and other oddities are not even Japanese. I guess I'm just as annoyed when I hear an amazing singer from Mali and they all of a sudden think that they should sing in English to appeal to their Western audiences! Overall, the sake and udon soup were very good. The service was excellent, aside from the detour to the second floor no man's land. I'm happy to know there's another sushi bar in Uptown. Next time I'll pop in after a good indie film at the Lagoon Theater.
(4)Horatio C.
All you favorites from Origami Downtown (but with some different specials) in uptown. Nice decor and friendly staff. Some of the best quality fish in town as you would expect from Origami.
(5)AJ J.
My friend and I went here last night sweaty and dirty after softball practice. They treated us like any other customers, very kindly! The staff was incredibly nice and personable. The sushi I had was just ok, but it was only my first visit. I'll be back to try more. Their menu is HUGE and the prices are very reasonable!
(4)Elizabeth G.
I was rather unimpressed. Me and 3 friends stopped at Origami the other day to try something new. The sushi was average, if not below it. We waited nearly 40 minutes for our 4 sushi rolls when there was only 10 people total in the whole place. The rolls were so loosely wrapped that they fell apart when we went to dip them. Our server was nice, but the rolls were way too expensive for what we got. Overall, I was underwhelmed and most likely won't return.
(2)mk M.
i have been wanting to try the new location for a while and finally had a chance to.. I ordered all the basics california roll tuna salmon hamachi was pretty disapointed in quality of fish not that fresh maybe i will try them again in the future but with so many other choices it wont be for a while

On my first venture to the Uptown Origami was to celebrate my husband's birthday with a small group of friends who all live in Uptown. Since the downtown Origami is our all time fav sushi spot we felt compelled to give this newer venture a try! The menu was similar, but not the same, and I was saddened to find my favorite roll missing. I know it's silly, but my staple at downtown Origami is a unique and simple roll with Granny Smith apples and spicy crab called the NYNY Roll. I got over however and we ordered a bunch of other rolls for the table to share. The staff was polite and prompt, the atmosphere cool (although sadly empty), and overall our experience there was great!
(4)Elikia J.
Freshest sushi around! Excite your pallet! Also try the Japanese specialties including the fried rice which is amazing ! Geoff and I have become regulars not only due to the fabulous food, but also due to the warm and welcoming staff. Every time anyone walks through the Origami doors, you become family. The sake selection and Japanese whisky is extraordinary! The best in uptown! We highly recommend Origami. A true Japanese experience. ^_^ã™ã—

Probably my new favorite sushi joint in Minneapolis. Move over, Masu. Sis and I came here at 4:30pm on Aquatennial Saturday thinking the place was going to be packed to the gills. It was not. I made a reservation online and received a confirmation phone call and text reminder. A nice touch! We chose to sit inside since it was 90 degrees and we were the only diners for a few minutes until more came in. Most were sitting outside on the patio. I absolutely love the interior of the restaurant. I have not been to Origami North Loop but I am going to have to try it out too! We ordered Miso Soup and Salad to start, and a Soft Shell Crab with ponzu sauce. The crab was light and delicious and the sauce was amazing. For sushi we ordered the Caterpillar, Dragon, Miyabi and Philly-X. The Philly-X is a Philadelphia roll lightly battered and tempura fried, cut into 12 pieces. It is then covered in spicy mayo and Lava sauce. It made me very happy. The Miyabi roll was the most delectable melt-in-your-mouth fresh salmon, snow crab, cucumber and avocado. Covered in a Mango puree and red pepper strings. For cocktails on the Happy Hour drinks menu I got the large Hot Sake and sis got the Honey Green Tea (with honey bourbon and ginger liqueur) I also wanted to try the Origami Martini and it arrived in splendor with a purple orchid in a beautiful glass. I really wanted to try something from their selection of Japanese whiskeys so I have to return! Service was wonderful and the meal was paced appropriately. We got our hand towels but they were ice cold. I thought they were supposed to arrive hot from reading the other reviews. Not a deal breaker by any means, and it certainly did not detract from the overall experience. The place is small but beautiful and intimate. We will definitely be back!

I've been to the North Loop Origami a number of times and had even dined at their Origami location once at Ridgedale long ago when they had been serving there) but this is my first time dining at the Uptown location! I LOVE (understatement) sushi and I especially appreciate Origami for their sustainability sourcing practices. For whatever reason, I've been snarfing down massive amounts of sushi especially since March of this year...I pick it up at Lakewinds, I make it at home, and last night I hit the jackpot: I ate a great selection of it at Origami! We sat out on their fabulous patio (which is mostly an open plaza of patios with other restaurants, condos, and an in-general entertainment complex walkway). Origami's service was fast, great, and friendly. We were brought out the warm steamed towels to wipe our hands with (that might be my favorite part). THEN we started off with a bowl of miso soup, a green salad, and a happy hour appetizer called, Japanese Berkshire Sausage, served with house made kimchee (this appetizer looked "simple" but the flavors delivered)! We then ordered the Deluxe Sushi Platter and had an assortment of salmon, yellowfin, salmon skin, octopus, tuna, and more that are escaping my memory at the moment, but all noteworthy in texture and flavor. My favorite, which I haven't seen anywhere else, was the crispy salmon skin (eeeeee! I love salmon skin!). Clever & delicious. We also ordered the regular sushi platter since we were in the mood to eat even more sushi and it was just more of the same goodness. I just really enjoyed every bite. Sushi digests so nicely, doesn't it (unless one gets sick off of it...and to that I say, you either didn't eat at Origami OR you didn't slather on enough wasabi ;-) ?
(4)Stacy K.
Maybe it's because I went for the happy hour specials, but I wasn't impressed. The spicy tuna roll had a lot of different greens in it like sprouts that made it taste a bit off, and the salmon avocado roll and Hamachi avocado roll were also very meh and not noteworthy. The appetizer of deep fried soft shell crab was pretty good, but seemed smaller than other places that I've been to.
(2)Ali S.
Their nigiri is perfectly decent and I'm a sushi snob so that's actually saying quite a bit. It took forever to come out. The prices are pricey for perfectly decent sushi.
(3)Greg P.
Very good sushi. Very fresh and great nigiri variety. It was expensive but worth it. Highly recommend.
(5)Dave R.
A quick review based on one visit for lunch: Yum! Had the Sushi lunch: Chef's Special sushi & Yellowtail. Came with a good non-salty miso and a hefty salad. The sushi was great. Everyone was friendly. Nice variety of menu options, which I'll have to explore. Not all that pricey for an Uptown restaurant, though parking is a bit problematic. The little plaza outside (near their patio) is very pretty.
(5)Zarina M.
This is as good as it gets. There's a reason why the owner keeps opening more sushi restaurants, they make great quality sushi. I came on a Saturday night and order the toro sashimi. The tuna melted... I see the twin cities metro inundated with habachi/sushi/buffet restaurants and the quality at many of them lacking. You can tell a lot about the quality of sushi chefs by how they use the rice. Most sushi places I've ate at recently the rice is so dense and tightly packed. There's no finesse, but Origami chefs know exactly what they are doing. I will come again and again. Service was on point and not over bearing. Even the back server was quiet but effective in re-filling our drinks etc. Eat here. You won't regret it.
(5)Adam T.
This is definitely one of the best Japanese places in town. The diversity of Origami's menu is one of the main draws. Tonight I had a splendid udon based bowl. On other nights I have tried a variety of sushi rolls which are always prepared excellently. The service here is always very attentive and prompt. I always look forward to returning.
(5)Jess F.
July 20th, 2014 was the night I had the best sushi I've had in MN, ever. Omakase like whoa. Trust the chefs! We were a group of 6 and 3 one year-olds. Oh yes, you read that right. Major props to Origami for being amazingly accommodating and patient with us. My group decided to all share in the Omakase ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Om… ) setting the per person price at 50 because we were all very hungry. The meal came out in courses starting with a miso soup and then a basic miso-soy dressing salad. Then came the best sashimi plate I've ever had consisting of incredibly fresh tasting scallop, shrimp, fried shrimp head, red snapper, yellow tail, tuna, salmon, mackerel, and toro. OMG, drool. Then came 7 different rolls, all amazing (just look at the pictures!). We were stuffed at the end, and I can't recommend this Origami and this location enough. Don't even try and get sushi anywhere else in uptown, seriously.
(5)Evan A.
I like the food and the atmosphere here. Happy hour all day Sunday and Tuesday was a good deal for both food and drink. Good salmon avocado roll, a little strange spicy tuna. Good dumplings. Nice patio. Service at the bar has been a little hit or miss but not terrible.
(4)Angelica L.
The price is not very high, but the food is very tasty. I have been there a couple times. The restaurant I would go to every time I'm in uptown. They have takoyaki, which is not easy to find in twin cities. My friends ordered pork chop rice bowl, and the amount is very big. Neither of them finished the food. I ordered a bento box with grilled salmon, the sauce for salmon is absolutely amazing. I would definitely visit there again.
(4)Jessica S.
My initial review has been validated by my second visit. My experience on both my visits was highly consistent both in terms of the ups and downs (refer to my first review on 12/11). I thought my first visit may have been a fluke in terms of flavorless sushi. But, again, this evening I ordered several different rolls. The fish (salmon in one, tuna in the other) was void of all flavor (until the rolls took a soy sauce bath)!!! Thankfully, I paid HH prices (Sunday all day HH), somewhat tempering my disappointment. "High quality" sushi Origami may be. But, I don't care if Origami serves the Bentley of sushi. Sushi sans flavor is simply not even worth a few bucks from my pocket. And I'd be nearly outraged had I paid full price for these rolls. On a side note, the ebi shumai (steamed shrimp dumplings) and its wasabi-spiked sauce was delish! ***Update 3/30/14*** Third visit. Third strike. Only returned because my friends had planned a dinner here. Still incredibly unimpressed and disappointed. Stayed away from the sushi rolls this time and opted for sashimi in the chirashi bowl (rice bowl filled with a wide variety of thinly sliced fish, sweet little egg-y omelette-like bites, and mysterious Asian veggies). Again, underwhelmed with the fish. Not worth it. The chirashi bowl came with soup (standard miso) and a salad (so embarrassingly pathetic and nearly undressed, it would have been better off to exclude from the meal deal altogether.) Also ordered the tuna/avocado salad. Tiny pieces of tasteless (that's how Origami rolls) raw tuna and minuscule avocado cubes in overly salted soy-based dressing. Bad. I remain in awe that Origami has scored so highly among the Yelp community. What am I missing?
(2)Courtney L.
Great service! Everyone was extremely professional and helpful. The rolls were marvelous, sashimi was gorgeous, and the saki was hot instead of lukewarm. Happy hour went late, even on a Friday. Very nice ambiance, they did a great job with such a small space. The tempura squid was only ok, but everything else was wonderful! We tried the never-ending summer roll, and it was delicious. The spicy tuna and salmon skin rolls off of the happy hour menu were great as well. We're definitely planning to go back!
(4)Kelly S.
A decent sushi joint, maybe one of the better ones considering this is the very-not-coastal city of Minneapolis. Breakdown of ranking below: Hostess: D, after informing us that she didn't have our reservation, she listed a few other names of reservations that she did have in a very unprofessional tone (my husband: Eric at 7pm, hostess: nope, but I have Sharon at 8pm) We opted to sit at the sushi bar. Ambiance: D, no ambiance. Barely audible music, random decor & a very casual patronage, including a lot of children, less classier than most sushi restaurants. Sushi Chefs: B+, though not exceedingly friendly or English-speaking, they got the job done fast & even offered us a complimentary taste of octopus & a pineapple carved dessert. Sushi: B, good by Minnesota standards. The texture was off on the shrimp & octopus we had, but the salmon, tuna, macarel, etc. were all good. The PNT roll with fresh jalenpeno was really delicious. Service: C-, not readily available, we had to turn around & flag our server down when we needed our check since we hadn't seen him in roughly an hour. After we got our check, we had to wait quite a while for him to run our card. Not great. Value: B, not inexpensive, but again, I'm trying to keep in mind that it's MN. I think the pricing is about on par for the food you get, but maybe not quite on par for the level of service you get. Parking: C, typical Uptown parking hassle of having to search a bit, pay a meter and walk several blocks. For this location, I don't see any way around that. ***I think they have a happy hour Mon-Thur evenings, may be worth checking out.
(3)Elizabeth R.
The staff really sold this place. The bartenders are knowledgable about the food and the varieties of sake available, and offered me some sake to try based on my preferences. I would say it's not the best sushi I've had, and I was especially bored by the tuna options. The nigiri and sashimi were pretty standard, but the spicy tuna roll was lopsided. Some pieces barely had any tuna, while the other end was overflowing with tuna. The special the night I was there of flounder was the highlight. I had five pieces of flounder nigiri and would have had more if I hadn't filled up on the tuna earlier.
(4)Anya C.
I ordered from BiteSquid as to go Una-Ju and Tako Sansai. The rice of Unaju is under-cooked (or over night), I think for $24 is absolutely not worth the money. For Tako Sansaj, it's not bad but not very special and just soso. Overall, i paid $50 for this (including $7 delivery and $4 tip) is disappointed.
(2)Joey F.
Nice place to sit outdoors during the summer. You are better off just going to Bar Louie though if want to be outside. I found the fish to be very unappetizing and the rolls to be tasteless. There is much better sushi places to go to in the city.
(2)Johnny P.
I'm not sure it was stand out. The Mussels were mis-leading as how we thought they'd be served. The squid is decent. The sushi was really the best part of the meal. I give it 4 stars just because the staff was really nice.
(4)Kara D.
First of all, like the obsessed glutton I am, I thoroughly reviewed the menu, reviews, website, and photos of Origami the entire day leading up to my dinner there. I saw Jessica S's reviews from her several visits and I took them into serious consideration. But I have to say, Jessica, if you ever want company to see if the 4th time's the charm, I volunteer as tribute. Eating "Never Ending Summer" rolls al fresco on a sunny evening in July with good friends is the epitome of perfection, unless you are a sick in the head. When we were seated, our server handed us warm lemony handtowels. Which was great after we just pet and smooched the french bulldogs that were next to our table. Our server was very animated and helpful. He offered suggestions and made sure that we got everything we wanted to order off the Happy Hour menu before it reached 6:30. We also got a complimentary shrimp shumai via the Yelp app. He never took a plate without asking if we wanted to keep the ginger, wasabi, and sauce. The HH items came out pretty quickly, but then there was a lull thereafter in dinner service. It was fine though, because our party was caught up in a very raunchy game of "Would you Rather?". One of the table faves was the Never Ending Summer roll. It had Asparagus tempura, chive, cilantro & tuna inside and tuna, avocado, shiso leaf & black pepper on top. I'm usually not crazy about cooked elements in my sushi, but the tempura asparagus was so perfect - light, crispy, perfectly salted. The end pieces had long stalks sticking out - I suggest pulling a knife on anyone who reaches for them. Another fave was the Miyabi Maki with snow crab, masago, cucumber, avocado on the inside and salmon, mango puree, and red pepper on the outside. The nigiri combo of 3, from the HH menu, exceeded my expectations. They didn't pull any of that "thinnest slice possible of fish on top of a huge poop-log of rice" ish. The slices of fish were thick and flavorful. Each fish had a distinct but fresh flavor. The salmon was notably fatty, which I love, because it simply melted in our mouths. The chicken wings had a perfect sauce to crisp ratio and were not that spicy. It's unfortunate that Origami is next to Bar Louie (our neighbor had a French Bulldog that kept humping everything, so I suggested we put a backwards cap on him and send him into BL's where he'd blend right in) but it is also near Yogurt Lab, which is redeeming. It's certainly on the pricey side, but otherwise I am a fan.

Ramen time with other Japanese friends. Miso and tonkotsu ramen here is the best ramen in town after all. Soup is what I like. Honestly sometimes the noodle is not done well. It happened 3 times in .. Well don't know how many times I have had ramen. There but minimum 50. Hope other ramens in town go this direction instead of strange sweet taste or too thick creamy soups.

First visit last night. We were impressed. Shared a tuna avocado salad, edamame, broccolini, Kimchee, and a couple of rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious, service was good, and the happy hour specials made it very affordable. Great location for a before-movie dinner (it's next door to the Lagoon theatre). We will return.

Minnesota's snow season is almost as brutal as Rebecca Black's new "song" Saturday or any kind of prank seen on Japanese TV. *Note: Look up the one where the velociraptor runs down the hallway of an office building scaring the person running in platform shoes. Hilarious! Lately, the howling cold has made my face permanently look like --_--, and I've depended on my happy lamp a bit too much. But, I've also been incredibly hungry and have lived by one phrase the Marines say (according to my brother): "Mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." lol. Screw you Old Man Winter! My boo and I went for a date Friday night. We spent a considerable amount of time fighting -9 degree weather, and ended up seeking foodie refuge at Origami Uptown. I have to say, my overall experience there was totally awesome. Beginning with the service, could it be better? With our teeth clattering and our faces pale, the first thing our server gave each of us a hot towel to warm up. How considerate! While defrosting, we ordered the sushi deluxe (consisting of an assortment of ten different kinds of seafood on rice). If that wasn't enough, we also got two rolls: a Shrimp Tempera and a Caterpillar. Given that I live in Minnesota, I'm pleased with the quality of sushi there. Everything is fresh (as can be), and doesn't smell old. I particularly enjoyed the tuna and mackerel nigiri. The Shrimp Tempera is yummy^2 and the Caterpillar Roll is avocado goodness -in the shape of ....... a caterpillar- with octopus for eyes. Oh, and we got pretty warm drinking the generous sized flask of drunkety funkety saki. It made our post-meal scamper to our car more bearable than the one to Origami Uptown. When I thought our meal finished, the chef -who has been with the same restaurant for about 17 years, wears a badass sushi bandana and a party tie- gave us a free dessert. My God, the dessert came with Pocky Sticks! LOL! #asiangrocerystores. #childhood. Duuuuddeeeee, HOW DID YOU KNOW? The bill was hefty, but if there's a better place to find high quality sushi paired with outstanding service, then let me know ASAP! I'm sure DeAnna J will tell me once again to visit Masu -and I will- but for now, O.U. has won my heart/ belly. Origami Uptown, next time I'll say "thank you" by making ya'll a paper... uh... airplane? What? Yeah! Come to O.U. haha

I came here yesterday for a light dinner and was pleasantly surprised that they have an all day happy hour on Tuesdays on top of Sundays. We ended sharing a beef donburi (basically beef bowl), hamachi roll, salmon and avocado roll and a spicy crab roll. The beef bowl was average although I wasn't a fan of the pickled ginger which was salty when I expected it to be sweet. I liked the hamachi and salmon rolls by themselves (that is without my usual wasabi and soy sauce). These rolls were light but the fish were mildly underwhelming compared to some other sushi joints. The spicy crab roll tasted just like a standard California roll so nothing too special there but a safe choice. Overall I thought the food was good but I am not compelled to say it is a place I must return. The prices for happy hour were pretty reasonable (~$8 for beef bowl, $5.5 for each of the salmon and hamachi rolls, and $6.50 spicy crab roll). In terms of service, our waitress was pretty attentive and nice. We sat outside as their indoor seating was stuffy and humid (didn't seem their air conditioning worked or existed). Decent happy hour experience overall.

First, I was nervous that Origami Uptown wouldn't be able to accommodate my party jumping from 6 people to 11. I called earlier in the day to discuss the reservation change with the hostess and manager. They said it would be no problem. (!) Upon arrival, they were completely ready for us. We were seated immediately. Our server, Kia, never missed a step. She was incredible, and when anyone was undecided or unsure (whether it be about the menu or any of the beverage options) she was patient and offered suggestions to make sure you got what you were expecting. She even let us know when late-night happy hour started, just in case we wanted to check out that menu... which we did, naturally. (Nicely done, Kia! I was so thankful that my guests were being well taken care of. As the organizer of this dinner, especially with an unexpected large group, I was a bit nervous about entertaining "out on the town" ... but here... it was a breeze.) The food was fresh and well made--as sushi should be. The appetizers; edamame, pot stickers, seaweed salad--all well done. They have a great variety of maki rolls, and the soup and sashimi were delicious. This was our first time at this location and WOW, I say it goes toe-to-toe with the Origami (downtown)...another favorite of mine. Settling up at the end of the night was no hassle and we all left happy, full, and honestly, I was already looking forward to my next visit. I put Origami Uptown in my Top 3 for restaurant experiences in Uptown. I will be back, and often.

Met my friend (and his dog) here for a good bunch of sushi. Great service, good sushi. And if the weather is good, stay outside. Bring your dog! Ordering from the sushi menu, most of it seemed to be rather towards classic rolls. Spider, Rainbow and the like. I managed to find something slightly different - the "Never Ending Summer Roll" which was asparagus tempura wrapped with tuna and avocado. With a special dipping sauce, really good. Miso soup was plenty hot. Beers were plenty cold. I would return!

We generally frequent the other Origami location, but we chose the new location just for something different and because we happened to be closer to it than the other store. We were pretty impressed. The store is a bit bigger, newer, more sleek than its counterpart across town. But the quality of the sushi is the same. We were pleased to find that on Sundays it's all day happy hour, so we were able to partake in some of the beer and sushi specials. While many of the items were discounted on the Happy Hour menu, we did locate a few items that were the same price on the regular menu and the Happy Hour menu (generally the more expensive toro and such). I guess that's buyer beware -- we generally order what we feel like eating if we are splurging on sushi. But just a note to look out for if you are eating on a budget. More than anything we were super delighted with the service (shout out to our server, Dana). He was attentive and thoughtful, made good suggestions and went the extra mile. He asked our preference for timing the different items we ordered, and he never let our glasses run empty. He even treated us to dessert when we mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary. In all, it made for a lovely evening out and really top-notch sushi.

I was hesitant to come to another sushi restaurant, but my interests perked when I saw that they had noodles and rice bowls. Katsu don is my favorite dish in Japanese cuisine, so I had to try it. It was good, not the greatest. The pork cutlet wasn't crispy like it should and it didn't have enough sauce/soup. But it was good.
(4)Sean H.
Our dinner was disappointing. We ordered chicken pot stickers and three rolls: Crunchy, Myabi, and Rainbow. The pot stickers were over fried on one side and doughy on other. The rolls were essentially flavorless. The biggest disappointment was the Rainbow Roll: there was not very much fish and a lot of egg curd? I have no problem paying premium for good sushi rolls but I felt that we paid a premium for flavorless rolls that really skimped on the fish. Our server was nice and the atmosphere is ok but we just won't be back.

Origami I love you. I have to say, this was one of my favorite sushi experiences ever. Had a beautiful, well designed setting, totally blown away by everything we ordered here. Super fresh and inventive rolls. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. The place was completely empty, which was confusing/surprising. We ordered: - Philly - Sea Girl - Philly Ex Roll Service was fantastic. Attentive, helpful, friendly and very very quick. We will definitely be returning very soon!

We used to frequent the Origami in the Warehouse District years ago, so I was eager to give the Uptown location a shot. Went here one evening a couple weeks ago and ordered a number of things off the happy hour menu and a few off the regular menu. The happy hour rolls, while a decent value, were only okay. Despite featuring different fish (tuna, salmon, crab), all the rolls tasted very similar. I think it was due to the relatively small ratio of fish to other ingredients in the rolls. We only shared a couple things off the main menu. While more flavorful than the HH items, they were more expensive than at other sushi places in the area. Based on our experience, I don't feel an urgent need to visit again soon. Note: if you do head here for HH, grab a table outside--there's decent people watching on a nice night.
(3)Chris P.
The food is great but the service is mediocre. We live right by the restaurant and do takeout and eat-in often. The service is still the same, The hostess couldn't be less friendly and put off by the customers. We see it every time we are there.

I have dined at this location in Uptown (tonight) and the downtown restaurant on 1st Street last month. Nothing bad to say. Sushi and rolls were served fresh and cold with a pretty presentation and everything was DELICIOUS. Uptown restaurant is a bit more casual atmosphere than downtown... Low lighting, very nice. Service was perfect and even though we finished our food and wine, we didn't feel rushed as we sat and talked for probably an hour afterwards. My second experience at Origami and I am pretty sure there will be many more. I get why this guy is opening more of these restaurants... How aboutt another in Chicago? Cheers!

I stopped in for a solo happy hour, mainly because I was tired from shopping and needed a little sushi fix to wake up. Now going alone to happy hour is already slightly strange, but walking into an empty restaurant didn't help. It was 5pm on a Thursday before the holidays, so maybe that had something to do with it or people get off work later. However, the bartender was cheery, talkative but not overbearing, and helpful, making me feel comfortable. I had the Morimoto beer, which wasn't on happy hour, but my first love in life was Iron Chef, the original and newer one, so I had to have a beer that Chef Morimoto helped craft, specifically to go with sushi. The happy hour menu is large enough for me, but apparently they are adding a lot more options most likely to draw people in. I can only assume this will happen after the new year, so make sure to check it out, I know I will! There are plenty of appetizers between $4-$8 and same prices for wine, beer, sake, and cocktails. I was very pleased with my $5 salmon roll, very fresh, with perfect rice, and 8 pieces. I didn't try anything else, but there is a check in special that I discovered as I was about to leave! I am excited to go back and try more!

Late Night Sushi Happy Hour. Count me in. One of my go to sushi spots in the twin cities has just made me a bigger fan of theirs. Now that they have relocated to the Uptown area they are doing late night HH and to top it off they have plenty more options on the menu (HH) then the location downtown so that's a win in my book. Plus, since Yelp is the cool kid on the block with every check in they give you a free appetizer (edamame, ebi shumai or gyoza). The sushi is still amazing and fresh. This place has yet to disappoint me, whether it is with their sushi, the variety, friendly staff and reasonable prices. During this visit we decided to sit at the sushi bar, which was a good decision since we were provided with something to nibble on from the sushi chef prior to ordering our food. Our waitress was very attentive and all of the food that was ordered came out rather quickly, which is a good thing. The new space that they are in has a great décor and there seems to be plenty of seating options as there is a 2nd floor, not sure if that's for bigger groups or not. The only downside to the set-up of the new space is the fact that the bar area is located right next to the door so every time the door opens on those cold winter days you might feel the cold draft. They also do parking validation in the parking lot next to them for an hour, wish I had known about that before. Great location, amazing food and an amazing time. Can't wait to visit again.

My wife and I went out for date night here. We loved it! The sushi was awesome and prepared elegantly. I have been to many sushi restaurants in the Twin Cities and tried the spider roll at every place. The spider roll here is the best I have ever had. My wife and I will be returning to Origami many times to come. Thank you for your great service and food.

We had made reservations weeks prior to be on the patio, we got there and they had given our table to someone else and we weren't able to sit outside. Took forever to get drinks, food and our checks when the meal was done. Food was nothing special and none of us didn't get the soup that was supposed to come with the meals. Some asked for different sauces and again it took forever to get them, asked for forks same thing. It was not busy and there were a lot of staff on. Talked to manager who was rude and didnt seem to care. We will never go back! Terrible customer service and mediocre food plus parking was $10 since it took so long

Great late-night happy hour deals, plus one of three free apps for a Yelp check-in! Our waitress was really friendly and we got all our food pretty quickly at 11PM on a Saturday. Standout dish was the Lomi Lomi Salmon, recommended by our waitress. It's a ceviche-like salad of salmon chunks, onion, tomato and macadamia oil. Super delicious, could eat it for days. (Don't remember the exact price but it was less than $9 for HH.) Salmon and avocado roll ($5) was a good basic option. Also tried the spicy salmon maki and spicy crab maki ($6.5 each). They were okay; couldn't really differentiate between the two in terms of taste. Got a nice bottle of hot sake ($6 for large) to wash everything down. It came piping hot!
(4)Nicole L.
By far the best food I've had in a long time. And let's not talk about the service we sat at the bar and our waiter Toyo my gosh I'm in love with his sprit I was having a bad day and when he spoke his demeanor changed my whole mood. My first time here but most deff not my last!!
(5)Terry L.
Great service but even better food. Excellent quality items, especially the Hamachi cheeks - cooked to perfection with the a nice crispy skin. Highly recommend for the quality.
(5)Meagan L.
Love this place! They'll open up the doors and let us in for late night drinks after they've closed. Sushi is great, especially if you can make it for happy hour prices.
(5)Erica E.
Sushi was decent, but seemed a bit over priced. There was a large jump in cost between the small, simple rolls and the large, specialty rolls. Overall okay, but not my favorite sushi I have had. Service was good and staff were nice.
(3)Peter H.
The best sushi restaurant in the Twin Cities, it is a bit tucked back behind the Lagoon Cinema, but they do have some delicious food! I don't eat sushi in Minnesota often, but when I do I come here. The food and service is the best! In the age of grocery store sushi, and all you can eat sushi places, the quality of this place really shines through. The fare probably could use some updating, but they perform them to perfection. Highly recommended. The happy hour is a great deal as well.
(5)Kim L.
One of my favorite places!! Immediately when they sit you down, they will give you a warm wet towel to wipe your hands before you eat and I thought that was something different. The service there was amazing. They will constantly check up on you making sure you are doing well. The food was so good. The quality of the food is on point! There is an outdoor dining area for anyone who likes to eat outside. I just love this place! Highly recommended.
(5)Wessam S.
Rolls were definitely great, best sushi in town.
(4)Soni P.
Went for happy hour, when the restaurant was creepily empty. The izakaya menu was promising in theory but very sad in practice, with mushy takoyaki and truly awful "kurobata sausage" (ie hot dog) with kimchi (ie salty vegetables with no chili or vinegar). The one redeeming dish was Manila clams. My friend's sushi was reportedly barely edible. Let's hope they do a better job during regular meals.

I have been anticipating the opening of Origami Uptown ever since I heard the news it was coming to the neighborhood. I've actually never been to Origami downtown or its closed location in Ridgedale--this was my first Origami experience. We went late on a weeknight (happy hour!) and had a really great meal. The decor was Asian inspired but in a subdued, artistic way that was modern and fun. The most surprising element of the restaurant was that it wasn't a sprawling "suburban comes to uptown" behemoth (like Bar Louie next door). It's a pretty compact space but it sounds like they'll have ample outdoor seating come patio season. The sushi was good, but I can't comment on any of the special rolls. We were feeling like cheapskates this night, in particular, so we didn't stray too far from the happy hour menu. But for the happy hour sushi "staples" I thought the rolls we got (spicy tuna and salmon avocado) were as tasty and satisfying as any of the other sushi restaurants in Uptown. As for the service, the restaurant definitely had a "we're new!" feel. I didn't mind that in my "I can't wait to try this restaurant!" way, and felt almost like a celebrity because of how appreciative the staff was that we were there. It was awesome and yet almost embarrassing--every single restaurant employee thanked us for dining there on the way out. Check it out! You should go now--something tells me you won't be able to get a table pretty soon.

This may be my new favorite sushi place in Minneapolis! They have authentic sushi items in addition to "American sushi rolls." Their menu is more than just sushi, however. We went for sushi, but I was so tempted to order something else on their dinner menu. It all sounded fantastic. We ordered some pickled vegetables to go with our sushi - a must try!
(5)Kel K.
Oh ya sure I've had sushi before Totally lied to my sushi loving date. (I never wonder why I am single) We enjoyed the patio and the happy hour or the happy hour on the patio for the grown and sexy. I can't speak on the sushi as it tasted fine to me (we had salmon and avocado rolls) but my date shrugged her shoulders with a simple 'meh' when asked to rate deliciousness.

I really want to love this place. Its right next tp my place and near work. I love sushi and love the downtown Origami. I have been here 5 times and the rolls are small and expensive, decor is bright, and service is slow. Sorry guys. I will try again next month maybe?
(3)Angi H.
DO NOT EAT HERE! THERE ARE MUCH BETTER OPTIONS IN MINNEAPOLIS! Awful!!!!! The first time my boyfriend and I went there was to have a nice night out and it took so long to even get recognized we just walked out and went somewhere else. We just tried Origami again tonight and it was just an awful experience. It took way to long to be seated and by the time our waitress came we're considering leaving again. After the 20 minute wait on our sushi rolls, we got to our second piece and realized that the white sushi chef had drenched our rolls in wasabi under the poorly cut fish. The rolls themselves were poorly made, the rice had fallen apart before we could pick the piece up and it tasted as if the fish was about to go bad. After a very long wait, a rude female manager came over to us and barked to us that "this is how sushi all over America is. Next time let us know so we don't have to waste the fish" and that "you don't know what you're talking about". I've been to the location in Downtown a few times and have had good expirences but the uptown location has no resemblance. After the rude manager, the delay in service, bad fish, and awkwardly empty/silent environment, we will never eat there again.

I took my daughter here as part of a Christmas present and they did not disappoint!! She had been wanting some authentic Japanese food/Ramen. It just happened that the Ramen she got was our bartenders mom's recipe!! The potstickers were the best we have ever eaten with a soy/ginger/chili sauce that I could've drank right out of the dish. I have a fish allergy and they made sure that I didn't eat anything to make me sick. I will be back for sure!!
(4)Morris F.
Not recommended: Vegetables in beef and rice bowl waay overcooked (from a can?); sauce in said bowl meek; iced tea stale (server; "it was only made a day or two ago); tough to get out of here at lunch for less than $20; nothing Vietnamese on the menu I could find, contrary to signs, unless you count the spring rolls (which were the best thing I ate). Yes I know it's a sushi place, but in that case don't offer what you don't bother to do well.

(4)Courtney L.

Best ramen in the twin cities! Hands down. Had the tonkotsu- this time but looking forward to the miso and the shoyu. Service was amazing too. Sushi bar- done. Def a regular stop in the rotation!!!

(3)Greg P.
I've eaten at some very recognized sushi restaurants across the country. I usually eat nigiri only so I can't speak to the rolls. This is excellent sushi.

Origami Uptown, next time I'll say "thank you" by making ya'll a paper... uh... airplane? What? Yeah! Come to O.U. haha

(5)Anya C.
(4)Bobby L.
(4)Sheresse S.
(5)Jim C.

Cheers!

I haven't found a good Japanese restaurant owned by Japanese. This is something!!! Food was good and environment was great!
(3)Tai T.

(5)Harold C.
(5)Laura L.
(5)Meagan L.
Love this place! They'll open up the doors and let us in for late night drinks after they've closed. Sushi is great, especially if you can make it for happy hour prices.
(5)Terry L.
Great service but even better food. Excellent quality items, especially the Hamachi cheeks - cooked to perfection with the a nice crispy skin. Highly recommend for the quality.
(5)Nicholas G.
(2)Will H.
(4)Alan H.
(4)Brendan C.
(2)Rachael R.
(4)Katie C.
(3)rich k.
I really want to love this place. Its right next tp my place and near work. I love sushi and love the downtown Origami. I have been here 5 times and the rolls are small and expensive, decor is bright, and service is slow. Sorry guys. I will try again next month maybe?
(3)mk M.
i have been wanting to try the new location for a while and finally had a chance to.. I ordered all the basics california roll tuna salmon hamachi was pretty disapointed in quality of fish not that fresh maybe i will try them again in the future but with so many other choices it wont be for a while
(1)John B.
(2)Cynthia F.
(5)Valerie H.
(2)Saiko M.
A Plus!
(5)Linda B.

All you favorites from Origami Downtown (but with some different specials) in uptown. Nice decor and friendly staff. Some of the best quality fish in town as you would expect from Origami.
