The sea salt caramel latte is so good! One of the best I've ever had.

I love just about everything about Common Roots my previous review was at start up and things were not as put together as they are now. That's not to say that things are perfect. What I like: the aesthetic. the place just looks and feels really nice. comfortable energetic, and clean. the sustainability factor is pretty awesome! the menu: The food is all really good! there are a lot of options. full menu. pretty sweet. the espresso menu is simple, and pretty straightforward.. good news. Cleanliness: the place is taken care of. it's staffed well with people who are paid well enough to care, and they do. the espresso machine is probably one of the cleanest most attended to in the city, and that's super awesome! What could use some work: the wireless. I know that in this day in age wireless is almost mandatory in a cafe. But that isn't the case in a restaurant, which this is. Put a limit on it. or shut it off on the weekends. do something differently. you're loosing business. the flow. The deli case all makes sense, with the bagels and everything there, but then the pastry case is practically around the corner. huh? what's up with the order printer? does the barista that's two feet in front of me really need a print out saying what I just ordered? I'm right here, they should be able to hear me. the coffee. I understand that Common Roots is significantly focused on being local and sustainable, but when sustainability is taken into consideration over quality (peace coffee) then that's a problem. peace is decent, but there are better coffees. Paradise, Alterra in MILW. come on. I love that they have a La Marzocco, but a two group is not enough, it's simply not big enough to handle the volume. get a three group GB5..ditch the volumetrically controlled shot buttons. I want a 6 oz. Cappuccino, and I want a smaller Latte I want Ristretto on the menu. train all the Baristi. I know I can get a good drink from Ben, but I want to get a good drink from someone at all times of the day. get a 12oz milk frothing pitcher. stop steaming milk for a Macchiato in a 20 oz. that just creates waste.

A good coffee shop is hard to come by. I'd know. I was a barista in a past life, and I loved the coffee shop I worked at. Yet, for many, it just wasn't the bees knees. So, I'm always a bit tentative when I head to a knew coffee joint. I'd heard good things about Common Roots - homemade food, local coffee, lots of space to work on the computer, but I thought it couldn't be that good. How wrong I was. Here's the thing about Common Roots. It's got that magic something that so many coffee shops fall short of. Character? Check. Good brews? (Coffee) Check. (Beer) Double check. I don't know how to best describe the vibe at Common Roots. Half hippie, half yuppie, the shop provides great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere, be it 7am or 7pm.

Genuine, eco-feel-good-factor, some of the best bagels and soups, deelisshh peace coffee, friendly staff, surly beer, a mean happy hour, and fair prices? What more could you want from a cafe? Nada. More businesses should learn from Common Roots.

We went to eat lunch here and like the fact that they only serve food that is made from scratch, organic, local, and fair trade. The food was tasty and fresh. I had a sesame bagel with hummus spread and it was very good. My husband liked the fact that they serve beer from the local breweries in the Minneapolis area. He and my son had fresh sandwiches that were very tasty. They are conscientious about recycling and also pay their employees a "living wage" and health benefits. We like their "story" besides the delicious organic food. Friendly service.

I was lucky enough to get stuck here during a nasty thunderstorm. That's right. Lucky. A beautiful space, totally sustainable and as one of the chalkboards claimed, 90% of their food was organic and local. For f-ing real. And don't forget staff that actually seemed interested in helping you. I started off with the cold press coffee - delicious and strong. I then had to partake in the cafe's happy hour - from 4-6, your pick of all 5 or 6 local organic beers on tap for $3, and glasses of wine for $3.50. Doing work on my laptop and drinking a beer was finally acceptable - 75% of the cafe was doing the same. I wrapped it up with a sesame bagel, with homemade hummus and beautiful, BEAUTIFUL tomato. It has been a long while since I have consumed a tomato so fresh and delicious. The only thing I would have enjoyed is the outdoor patio - but the weather was not in my favor. All in all - this East Coaster can only dream of a cafe existing like this one back in her stomping grounds.

Heard this is owned by a young Macalester grad, which is tres cool; Jewish to boot. The bagel was good for MN or CA standards, but I go to NY a lot, so my standards are the highest. Love the crunchy ambiance and fun options. We need to support young entrepreneurs. DC needs cool local stuff like this. Shame on DC - thumbs up for MN!

I've only been here once and it was late morning on a weekday. It wasn't too busy and it was nice enough to sit outside with my sister and her doggie. I ordered coffee and a bagel with beet hummus. The hummus was bright pink and quite possibly the best salty hummus treat I've ever devoured. I want to go back...soon.

Terrific food. A great variety of options and the food itself was delicious. fresh and well presented - way above what I would expect from something that calls itself a cafe and only charges $9 for a warm sandwhich (not that this is cheap, but it was very reasonable for the quality of the food). The interior is cozy and well designed. I went in the winter, so I can't speak to the patio. Service was fast and courteous.

I frequented Common Roots when it first opened. Sure it was just starting up, but I loved atmosphere, the bagels and spreads were really good and Peace coffee is seriously the best kind of coffee in the entire world. I went back this past weekend for brunch and it was so disappointing that I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. The vegan chili was super watery, the beans weren't cooked and it was all spice and no real flavor. The tempeh hash was basically rubber covered in tomato sauce. The only saving grace was the salad served along side of it, but that's such a basic thing that it's pretty hard to mess up. At least the bagels, iced tea and coffee are still really good. I really like the whole idea of the place and the employees can make a damn good drink (besides being genuinely nice.) I just wish the food was better.

One of my favorite, and dependable places! Never disappointed by the variety of food, AMAZED they support and have access to so much local produce YEAR round! Luv the outdoor patio. Just wish the people behind the counter were nicer, as most seem that 'yea, this is my job..... what do you want..." quite un-enthused. Also, many of the side salad portions are quite small.

We found this great little neighborhood spot online after looking for someplace that was open on Christmas Day. Apparently they have been open every single day since they opened a few years ago, they should get five starts just for that! But not only was this a perfectly cozy little neighborhood coffee shop, but the breakfast was delicious. Being from Seattle, my husband has high expectations for his coffee and he thought their coffee was great. I had the huevos rancheros for breakfast and they were perfectly prepared, fresh and delicious. My husband had breakfast with the bison sausage, which we had never had before, but it was delicious, lean and flavorful. We loved this place and wished we were in town long enough to try it again for lunch. Seems a little casual for dinner, but can't wait to get back to MN to try it again!
