Let's start at the beginning. Today, I swung by this Baja Sol and I was super excited. I love the food. But, today - big mistake....HUGE. It all started on a downward spiral when I placed my order and asked for sour cream on the side. I noticed, prior to paying, that the manager (no name tag - he told me he was the mgr) had charged me around $1.50 (+/- a little) for a side of sour cream. I pointed out the menu says that adding sour cream to the bean and cheese burrito is 69 cents. I asked about this and he told me that I had asked for it on the side. Now, in this case, I would normally give someone a pass and chalk it up to misinterpretation (side vs "on" the side), but he started to go back and forth with me until I asked why couldn't I just have the sour cream that cost 69 cents, but ON the side. He wouldn't do it so I told him to add it TO the burrito. He seemed irritated. Next, he appeared to become even more annoyed when I asked for the salsa on the side, as well. Let me be clear: By irritated, I'm referring to his body language and complete lack of smile or friendliness on any level. Did I mention his heavy sigh as he spun on his heal? After ordering, I went to the salsa bar to get pico for my chips. As I scooped a spoonful into a small plastic cup, I noticed, not kidding, a glob of black hair (2-3 strands - I didn't stick around to braid it). Gross, I know, but look - I get it - it happens. Willing to overlook this, I brought the manager the cup of hair, errr...salsa. I asked for some pico from a different container to which he said nothing, not a sorry, no apology, and walked off to refill the salsa bar container. When he was done, again, nothing - he said nothing to me - I went and got some new pico. After finishing my chips, I moved on to my bean and cheese burrito. I took one bite and noticed there was nothing but beans in the burrito. I unwrapped it and there were about 8-10 tiny shreds of cheese. I really sat there for a minute staring at it and thinking, wondering, trying to figure out why I, basically, had no cheese. I moved the beans around and there weren't any melted strands of cheese to see either. I grabbed my purse and went to the register. I asked the same guy (lucky me) if I could purchase a side of shredded cheese. He said no. Now, I was irritated. I asked him why and he stated that the cheese isn't available to buy and that he could charge me $2 for queso. I told him I didn't want queso. I then told him WHY I wanted the cheese...that being because I didn't get any on my burrito. He told me he couldn't. I offered 3 times - yes, 3 TIMES - to show him my burrito so he could see there was no cheese. He said I am "only supposed to get 2 oz of cheese on this burrito and that's not a lot". I informed him that I didn't get anywhere close to 2 oz (I bake and cook almost every night - I'm fully aware of what 2 oz looks like). And, no, I wasn't going to buy queso and would he please take a look at my burrito so he could see what I'm talking about. He, very irritated now, spun around and told his cook to give me a cup of shredded cheese. You'd think I was asking to shave off a smidge, just a 5lb block of 3 year cheddar. Good gosh - it was 2 ounces WHICH I INITIALLY OFFERED TO BUY! Here's the icing on the cake: I went back to my burrito, added the cheese, re-wrapped and took a big, yummy bite! As I did so and pulled it away from my mouth, a strand of black hair dangled from the inside of my burrito. YEP! I still cannot believe that happened twice. Once - fine. Twice and you're talking about a sanitation issue. For what it's worth, I have super curly blond hair. The only other color option on my head is gray so it def wasn't mine! I never mentioned the second hair incident to the manager. The reason is obvious. I left. I didn't have it in me to go complain to someone who didn't value me as a customer or treat me like I mattered. He likely wouldn't have believed me, but worse, I highly doubt he would have cared. You can't make this stuff up

I don't like how they no longer give you free chips and salsa. They do make a good wide variety of salsa. The tacos are pretty good as well. Never to busy.

It's been awhile since we've been here and I'm glad that we came back. The food was delicious and they loaded up my shrimp tacos...usually they were moderately filled. We will be back!!

The chips and salsa are back to being free with a meal, however now an employee hands you a basket of stale chips rather than self-serve. I'd rather they go back to charging $1.49 to add the salsa bar and leave it unlimited. Given how this place changes prices and policies like the wind, I'm sure they'll have another plan to save a nickel next month.

This place is actually a pretty good "taco joint". I had driven past it many times and finally stopped in one evening. I was pleased and have been back several times. I have really only tried the tacos here. I think the shrimp tacos are my favorite, but also enjoy the other meats. I see other negative reviews about the .99 cent chips & salsa bar, but what you have to understand is that you get to also try a number of different salsas, mild to hot and it is unlimited. It is not like you just get one little bowl of restaurant salsa & chips. I personally feel it is worth the additional charge. Only gave 4 stars because one time they did forget part of my order (take-out) and also the sides of rice and beans are nothing special. However, service was friendly, prices are reasonable and I would recommend checking it out!

This place used to be nicer. The food is still maybe. 3.5 stars, but it is not a clean restaurant. Specifically, the black floor mats have smelled moldy for months. Moreover, they now charge for the unlimited chips. That was a differentiator but now it feels like a gouge from management that does not care their restaurant is not clean. Also don't use the gross bathrooms !

Food is good and fast. More expensive than Taco Bell. Also, the draw was usually free chips and salsa. This is noon get the case. Chips and salsa are now $.99. I probably will skip it because the food alone isn't worth the price. Chips sealed the deal.

Must be new management now. No more free chips was the start of the problem but this time we actually found a dead fly in our chicken quesadilla. It was completely disgusting. Never to return.

As Monica and Prachee already mentioned, the fish tacos are pretty good. Considering this is a fast-foodish kind of place, having fish item on the menu is a nice option. The free chips and salsa bar is also great. There are probably almost 10 salsa varieties that you can choose from ranging from mild to crazy hot. If I lived closer to this place, I would probably have come more often.

I'm slightly conflicted as I write this review. Here's why: I give Baja 5 stars for their incredible chips & salsa bar. Warm chips with a variety of fresh salsas - delicious! But I will only give them 2.5 stars for the rest of the food. I'm just not a fan. I've had the burritos - bleh. The filling is great except the rice is just so horribly bland. I've had the tacos - so so. They are made fresh to order, but once again very bland. The only thing I haven't tried was their fish tacos which I heard are very yummy, so that will be my next choice when I go there! But all in all, Baja is worth doing to simply for their chips & salsa!

Everytime I visit MN, I HAVE to stop here. Chipotle has nothing on this place. They have a variety of items you can order from your typical burritos to tacos to the best nachos in this world. Next time you are in the mood for some freshly prepared non-fast food Mexican, try this place, you won't be disappointed. And, as an added bonus...they don't put cilantro on everything!

This place has gone downhill in recent months. It used to be a good place to get a hearty burrito, but I've been very disappointed with how dry and tasteless the burritos have been recently. Also, they messed up on my to go order and it took them days to figure out how to refund me. Seems like something they should plan for in a fast food restaurant.

I was a Chipotle addict for a very long time, but ended up becoming bored with their very limited menu. Baja Sol is far superior when I want fast food mexican. I've been getting the mexicali fish burrito lately. The taco salad is amazing and the nachos come layered with a plethora of toppings. And then there is always the complimentary tortilla chips and salsa bar to top things off. I do wish they had larger containers for the salsa. I suppose the idea is to stop people from loading up on salsa, but i end up getting 5 or 6 of those little suckers.

I just love all these options for relatively inexpensive and fast Mexican food. Since Chipotle opened several years ago, it seems like places of this nature have been popping up all over with various results. The thing I like about Baja Sol is that they dont try to be a Chipotle knock-off... They have a much wider menu which I think sets it apart. There are several Baja Sol locations around the cities--probably one located near wherever you arein the metro. This particular Baja Sol is located right along Excelsior in St. Louis Park near a variety of other shopping and dining options and not that far from Uptown/Lake Calhoun. There is ample parking in the lot which it shares with the Pannekoeken Huis. The interior isnt anything special, but the service has always been good and there is a decent amount of dining space. The menu has burritos, but there is so much more that Baja Sol has to offer. My favorite thing on the menu here, believe it or not, is the fish taco combo. You can even increase the size and get it with a 3rd tacos--something I always do. It's not exactly "cheap" but definitely affordable and even more so when you consider the self-serve, complimetary chips and salad bar. They usually have 6 or more salsas to sample--something that I enjoy trying out whenever I visit. Overall, Im definitely not saying it's "better" than Chipotle... But it is certainly another good option for this level of Mexican cuisine. The salsa bar and variety on the menu make it another good dining experience. Pros: Multiple locations, complimentary chips/salsa, variety of menu items, variety of salsas, fish tacos, good service Cons: Ingredients arent at the level of Chipotle, interior isnt anything special

I would have given Baja Sol five stars if it wasn't for the rude order taker. Being a Chipotle snob I had never been to Baja Sol before. When I asked the lady order taker what a popular item was she replied with "uh I don't know." It appeared she really didn't care at all that I knew nothing about their operation or she didn't speak English. When I told her the Grande Burrito she replied with an ok? I didn't know there was a free salsa bar until getting back into my car and being told by my friend. Horrible Service, great food!

Love the variety of the salsa and unlimited chips. The SLP one always has fresh food and fresh salsa, and friendly service. For some reason the one in uptown, has limited salsa and isn't all that clean, the food or salsa doesn't seem fresh and somehow messed up my order. And other locations don't seem as impressive...I'm not a Baja Sol fan necessarily, but definitely a fan of Baja Sol St. Louis Park, mainly cause they are a nicely run operation, especially compared to the others.

I haven't been able to move beyond the fish tacos since the last 18-24 months when I first discovered this place. And now my husband is addicted to it too. The fish taco portion is generous with 2 tacos (there's an option with 3 tacos too) and a side of rice - they will happily exchange it with beans if you ask. The fish is battered and fried and is always fresh. Chips (you help yourself) are complimentary with an entree. I like to load it up with each different kind of salsa they have at their salsa bar. The habanero salsa is teasingly hot, the roasted salsa packs a lot of flavor, the featured salsa is something to look forward to, and the mango-peach salsa is what I end with as dessert. You can also order online and have your food ready when you arrive. The bright fresh decor creates a warm atmosphere.

Well I would like to say that I was impressed with my new discovery. I love to eat at Chipotle often, but there is always something missing... the chips and salsa. I really enjoyed the selection of the menu at Baja Sol. I chose the Baja style tacos with carnitas. The tortillas were nice and fresh, the pork was moist and tender. It could have used a little more Pico de Gallo and cilantro, but the quality of the meat made up for it. The best part of the visit was the salsa bar. I really enjoyed the variety of salsas available. The habanero was great, started with a deceiving sweet side, then slid into barely tolerable heat (just the way I like it). There was also a really nice smoked salsa, and also a tomatillo that I liked. Rounding out the salsa bar were onions, diced and sliced jalapenos, fresh lime, cilantro, and pico de gallo. I can't say that the chips were amazing. I have had better restaurant tortilla chips, however the accompaniments made up for it. Overall very good experience. I am looking forward to going back and trying some other items from the menu.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

You can't make this stuff up
(1)Joey F.
I don't like how they no longer give you free chips and salsa. They do make a good wide variety of salsa. The tacos are pretty good as well. Never to busy.
(4)Edina M.
It's been awhile since we've been here and I'm glad that we came back. The food was delicious and they loaded up my shrimp tacos...usually they were moderately filled. We will be back!!
(5)Luke M.
(2)Sara D.
(4)Michael C.
(2)Tara J.
Better than chipotle. I pick here any day over the other place. Great bean and cheese burrito.
(4)BK J.
Solid TexMex food at a reasonable price. Decent service, for a order at counter, pick up at counter when number is called place. Salsa bar is well stocked and maintained. Fresh warm tortilla chips cinch the deal.
(4)Thomas J.
Food is good and fast. More expensive than Taco Bell. Also, the draw was usually free chips and salsa. This is noon get the case. Chips and salsa are now $.99. I probably will skip it because the food alone isn't worth the price. Chips sealed the deal.
(3)Jenni S.
Must be new management now. No more free chips was the start of the problem but this time we actually found a dead fly in our chicken quesadilla. It was completely disgusting. Never to return.
(1)Mon P.
(4)Jennifer Y.
(3)Michelle W.
(5)AJ J.
(3)Ryan H.
(4)Becky L.
My fave fast food rest! Unlimited chips!! Keep in mind... is still a fast food rest.

(4)Anna V.
(3)Chad A.
(4)Rhonda G.
I'm not accustomed to Mexican fast food, except for Taco House. I had the American tacos and they were pretty good for soft shell. Didn't like the weird flavor of the rice, and the chips, some were stale and just a flat taste. I like the variety of the tacos, and the service is very friendly, and it's clean. That taco salad sounds good too. I like that it's not really crowded around here, since it's next to the strip mall and not in it, so parking is pretty good.
(4)Prachee M.
(4)Monica S.
I know this place is considered fast food-ish... but these fish tacos are just ridiculous. I don't actually order anything else, but while I wait for my food I eat the corn salsa that is also delicious. Seriously.. ridiculous. Like better than most sit down restaurants I've ever eaten at. Also it's cheaper than chipotle (in my personal opinion, chipotle doesnt even HAVE fish tacos though so it's no comparison)
(5)Tom D.
I like Baja Sol for the value, then the food. the food is above average, just not quite Chipotle standards. Unlimited chips and salsa.

The chips and salsa bar is a nice touch, but for better or worse, Taco Bell has figured out a way to make the same low quality pseudo-Mexican food for a fraction of the price.
(2)James F.
