Greek Cuisine
Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health. Greeks also made different type of wines from the best quality of grapes fermented in controlled environment.
Today, you can find hundreds of restaurants offering authentic Greek food or popularly termed as Mediterranean cuisine in New York city alone. People wait in line to taste the exotic Greek dishes like saganaki, taramasalata, souvlaki, loukoumades, spanakopita, moussaka, and many more. One thing which most people like about these authentic Greek dishes is abundant use of lemon juice, olive oil, fresh rosemary and sea salt. A smart mix of few ingredients can virtually take you on the pebble streets of beautiful city of Greece.
For those who don't have time to enjoy fine dining should try tasting the famous souvlaki with pita which is type of meat dish, also a trademark Greek fast food. For those who are vegetarian, or vegan can try different versions of Greek Salad. So, if you wish to enjoy a hearty yet healthy meal that tastes divine then try dining at the best Greek restaurant in your city. I had a serious craving for baklava so we decided to grab lunch too! I had the falafel sandwich meal (and my baklava) and my father had the gyro platter with hummus. The portions were huge and we both carried out leftovers. The sandwich was a definite two-hander and was FULL of falafel - this is not some three-patty place! I really liked that the hummus wasn't just plopped on top, there was a pool in the bottom of the double layer of pita, and in between the veggies (cuke, tomato, lettuce, onion, and they don't skimp there either!) and patties as well. The falafel wasn't quite as crispy as I prefer, but it had a good flavor. The fries were seasoned and fresh. The baklava wasn't the best I've ever had, but it satisfied my craving and was a fairly large triangle. My father enjoyed his meal, especially the hummus. Overall, it was such a quick, filling, and inexpensive lunch...I'm sure we'll be back.

Great fresh gyros. That's all you need to know. I prefer the sauce on the side with no onions but you know, whatever floats your boat. A little birdie told me that I was able to get the kids meal version of the gyro too, which offers the same amount of fries and a bit less meat but I mean if your a small eater like me, this is more than enough food. Plus you can't beat paying $2 less than regular for it. If you want to be adventurous and have a little bit more for your buck, get the gyro value combo. Same thing as a gyro kids meal but more meat and veggies. Both meals come with a drink and this place opens late!

Great food and really friendly service. My favorite place for hummus. So many varieties and I haven't tasted one yet that wasn't good.

Called in an order, was put on hold for six minutes and forgotten about. Felt like an inconvenience to staff, gryo meat was beyond strong. Fries were soggy. Will not go back.

You get a lot of food for your money. We both ordered a combo plate and we had dinner, and will have enough for a full lunch and snack tomorrow! Great kabobs. Hummus is delish, they had many different kinds to choose from. I will go back to try the others. Tabbouleh was awesome. Everything we had was great. They were busy because of Valentine's Day and the customer service was fantastic, friendly and speedy. Great little place. Don't let the strip mall scare you away.
(4)Cindy S.
I have never had a bad meal here. Delicious everything. Large servings, great prices.
(5)Jon S.
I am a fan! This place has a gyro combo special (includes Gyro, fries and a drink) and it is totally worth every cent! I always make a point to frequent this place when I am in the area.
(4)Hina I.
Lamb kebab was the best thing we had. Also gyro was good too. Big portions , reasonably priced. Great salad in the start.
(5)Julie A.
Spectular I have been coming here at least once a month ( using my metro dining club card) for years now. I'm always up for trying new things but no need once I fell in love with the gyro dinner. I skip the hummus, rice, fries option and go right for an extra house salad with their amazing dressing. The guys in the kitchen are helpful and funny... And the gal behind the register is always super sweet It's a small cafe/diner. A real find for the area. I really appreciate the fast service and great quality of meat. The vegetables seem like they are right from the farmers market... Fresh, crisp., flavorful. If you are in the area give it a try. You can't go wrong.

I just ate the best Chicken Gyro I've ever had. I recently moved back to the Robbinsdale area, and had a 15% of coupon for Athens Cafe. I went to get a Chicken Gyro combo, including a drink, and the total was $5.99. The Gyro and Fries portions were so large, I would have not thought twice if the total was double that (with or without the 15% off coupon). Robbinsdale has become quite the restaurant town; Athens Cafe deserves to be on the "must-list" for lunch. Great prices, incredible food, big portions, and quick service--even with a long line of customers. I now know why there are long lunch lines. I can't wait to go back and try other items, as well as their homemade Hummus for sale.

We love just a couple minutes from here and drove by many times before we stopped. We ordered the sampler platter and it was so good! The lamb kabobs, gyros and hummus were amazing!

This is the second time I"ve eaten here and boy was this time even more memorable. Athens Cafe is in a strip mall in Robinsdale and it's a place that's easy to miss. Their restaurant is setup like a fast food restaurant so it's nothing fancy, an old 90's interior and seating outside as well. Their menu doesn't really list any prices only pictures and names of stuff they sell. I ordered a falafel sandwich, with fries, and a soda for 6 bucks and change so practically $7.00. If you take a look at my picture, that sandwich was huge (almost the size of my face) as well as a very generous serving of french fries. They served the falafel sandwich with a fork which I'm assuming most people would use at the pita probably serves as more of a bowl than anything else. For me however, I tackled that beast with my bare hands and it resulted in a face smeared with tahini and man was it good. The falafel didn't have a beautiful golden brown color like Moshe's falafel in NY but the flavors were absolutely spot on (the best tasting I've had thus far). The sandwich was filled with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, and onions and more falafel than I could count. 7 dollars for lunch and waddling out like a penguin afterwards? Makes me a happy man.

The service was great. The man behind the counter was very friendly and seemed to know a lot of people that came in. I ordered the chicken kebab. It was amazing. It came with chicken(delicious), peppers, onions, and a side. I got the fries. Very welled seasoned. It also came with pita bread, which was just about the most awesome thing ever. I tried some of my husbands hummus. Pretty amazing. We also received a salad before the meal which was pretty good. The good was amazing. And the price was unbeatable. I only wished we loved closer. If come back, and I'd come back often. As we were about to leave we couldn't help but pick up some desserts to go. Much like the rest of the meal, perfection.
(5)Steven Z.
Mmm... The chicken kabob sandwich is quite delicious... and pretty huge. Also the seasoned fries are really good. The combo is a good deal and the portions are generous.
(4)Ricardo A.
Their dishes are pretty good, but after a while it gets monotonous. Maybe if they did more mixed combos that might get things going. Other than that their dishes are better than average, healthy, and tastes authentic.

Wanted something close, cheap, and would make my belly and mouth happy...Heard good things about Athen's Café, so off we go...to the batcave. Food started with greek salad. Simple and good with the feta, olives, cucumber, tomato, romaine...We ordered the falafel with hummus for an app. Truthfully wasn't impressed with the falafel, hummus was decent though. Maybe it was because it was 30 minutes before closing, but they weren't the crispy outside and warm inside. Sad face... What was mouth watering good was the lamb kebab with fries. Not gamey at all, and cooked just right...filling and savory. Fries were also good. And I dipped it all in the cucumber sauce. More please...Wife got the gyro dinner with rice. I would say ok, but not coming back specifically for that dish...remembered it being a little bland, and kind of floppy...with the portion size, salads, and pita bread you get...you will have leftovers...I will come back and I'm hoping I will build an obsessive craving for this place.
(3)Chris P.
They have the best hummus around! I go there just for the hummus. Okay, I do get other items and love their gyros and salads as well. Nothing fancy at all about this place except for the food. The only bad thing I experienced there was on the last trip the woman working the counter was right outside of the door sucking down a cigarette and making the entry to the restaurant very smelly as I had to hold my breath. She then came in and didn't even wash her hands after smoking. Yuk!
(4)Blake L.
Love this place. The owner is as nice as can be and the food is great. They have a lot of different types of fresh made hummus, (i.e. jalapeno hummus, habanero hummus, spinach artichoke etc.) They have a lot of fresh made desserts as well. The gyros and combos are pretty standard fare for a Mediterranean deli.
(4)Melissa R.
I went to Athens Cafe last night. The staff was very helpful and extremely nice. I ordered the Gyro and Chicken Combo, it came with Gyro meat, chicken meat, house salad, pita, drink and your choice of rice, hummus or fries. It was enough food for two meals. The food was great! I will be back again very soon.
(4)Catherine K.
I love having Athens Cafe in our neighborhood! It's a nice way to change things up for dinner when we need take out. The staff is always nice too. Falafels are a tasty addition to a gyro and I can't resist the baklava. The portions are huge. My husband and I usually split a combo platter and then order extra pita and falafels. And baklava.
(4)Rachel C.
I forgot about this delicious Robinsdale gem located in a strip mall. Gyros as big as your head. I've had tastier, but these are fab. Bought some hummus, tabbouleh, and pita bread to go. The hummus is AH-mazing. Better than any store brand I've tried and slightly cheaper. The pita bread is so soft and yummy. Staff is very helpful, friendly, and want you to enjoy your food.

Seen this place in Robbinsdale for a long time and finally stopped in to try it out. They have a pretty modest storefront, kind of like a family style deli counter. The place was very clean contrary to other's comments. We were helped right away, served promptly , and the manager?/ line cook guy was very pleasant throughout the whole experience, asking us how it was and not forgetting to say goodbye as we left. He seemed like he actually njoyed his job and being there, which is a big plus. Onto the food: We had a coupon for 2 Gyros, 2 fries, and 2 sodas for $10. Thinking they were going to e moderately sized, we were pleasantly surprised when the Gyros were massive and the portion of fries was better than average. Food to price ratio = excellent The Gyros themselves were tasty, I can't say the best I've ever had, but probably in the top 5. The lettuce, tomato and onion were all super fresh The fries were really crispy and not overly salty. Overall a great experience, the staff was excellent, and the food delicious and cheap. Honestly these guys should be on Eat Street or have a food truck Downtown, not in Robbinsdale shopping center, it was that good.
(5)Marta S.
The food here is great. The gyros and the hummus are my go-to options, but the lamb kebabs are also good. The staff is helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit.
(4)Anne C.
We went tonight with a coupon for two gyro dinners. Two gyros, fries and soda for ten bucks. Also got a spinach pie. The gyros were HUGE full of meat, sauce and veggies. Service was fast and nice. Spinach pie was good too. Would definitely come back w or wo coupon. I have no idea why people would knock this place on ambience. Umm, you don't expect to get fine china at the golden arches would you? We got our food to go... Sure, the place could be a little bit cleaner but you get what you pay for.
(5)Sam M.
I haven't been to such a good paper plate diner in a long time. No frills really but good solid Greek food. The beef was tender and the chicken just right. Will definately go back.
(4)Christopher H.
I stopped in Athens Cafe last night for the first time in ages. Not sure why I stopped going regularly as the food was always good and the folks who work there are super friendly. The food is pretty much what you expect from a place like this, gyros, kebabs, dolmades, hummus, etc. I pretty much always stick to the gyro platter with hummus. You get a big pile of meat covered in tzatziki sauce, some pitas, hummus and a nice side salad for about $9. Overall, it's nothing special but very good for what it is. As other have mentioned, the ambience isn't anything fancy but that's not what I go there for.
(3)Josh E.
I'm very surprised at the negative reviews here... Although it isn't the fanciest restaurant, it shouldn't be compared to one.... Its A CAFE!!!! I'm dead serious, they make some of the best LAMB Gyro's i have ever had, unlike many other Greek restaurants, who claim to serve all lamb meals, when in reality it's a blend of mostly beef, and then very little lamb. The Hummus, is to die for, (If you like spicy, give they're jalapeno hummus a try!) and all made right there in the restaurant. The staff is very friendly to me all the time, and best of all, i can get a full meal for under 6 bucks... Gyro, onion rings (Bomb onion rings) and a decent sized softdrink. All in all, good food, GREAT prices, and a nice and chill atmosphere.... The way i thought cafes were supposed to be!
(4)Will B.
Fantastic casual dining spot when you are craving Greek. Like others have said if you are a fan of hummus this place is worth the pilgrimage from anywhere in the metro. Love the gyro plates, also the sautéed vegetable entree with the lamb is killer.
(5)Timothy T.
Love the gyros and hummus, and the service is great! You'll never have a bad meal here.
(5)Alexis A.
I've been here many times, mainly because the food is good and I always get a bargain. They have coupons in the entertainment books ( entertainment.com/discou… ), and USED to have it on restaurant.com . In any case, the food is well worth the price, and eating off plastic forks, as it is. I love the chicken kabob meat and their hummus (even though it's as mild as it gets). Everything i've had there is very good, and seemingly fresh. Don't let the surly older order taker, or tacky menu display fool you into passing up some delicious Greek food. It's a good meal.
(4)Mon P.
This place is more like a fast food joint. They serve you with plastic forks and spoons, foam plates, and foam cups. Well, the food is good with generous portion, so who cares about the ambiance. We ordered the lamb gyros, and beef kebab and beef kofta. Everything tasted good. The hummus with pitta was good, but their green salad was absolutely nothing to write home about.
(3)Jen T.
Okay, the ambiance was zero. It was like old fast food place. But the food and the quality of the food were super. Yes you had them on the cup, bowl and plate made from styrofoam which I was not a fan of. Also their silverwares were plastic. Good grief. But the food were fresh, colorful and tasty. Their kebab and kofta were the best. Gyro were ok. Pastries were ok. Turkish coffee...hmm...as my husband said, add some sugar and cream make it reasonable to drink, it was because the taste was weird for both of us. They gave us salad and pita bread to munch on while we waited for our food. Overall a good greek food. If you liked greek food you have try this place.
(4)Jane D.
Delicious food with generous servings, but more importantly - fantastic service! Whoever was the gentleman working the register yesterday was polite, friendly, helpful, and just made the meal even better. In a world where shitty customer service seems to be the norm, this experience stood out even brighter in my mind.
(5)Raynay r.
Athens gets 0 stars for cute ambiance. Think vinyl upholstered chairs and bar stools with the random (faded) greek picture thrown in. However, despite the distinct lack of decor, the spanikopita, kofta and chicken gyros are good. It's the best food you'll ever get at a place serving everything on styrofoam plates and plastic silverware. The kofta is the perfect blend of meat and herbs. Skip other gyros, but the chicken gyros are made on-site simmered with chicken, herbs, onions and other flavorful stuff. The pita can be hit or miss. The last I heard, they got their pita from Holyland. I have had experiences where the pita seems dried out, so I'm guessing they must leave it sitting out too long. I think the hummus is the best in the metro. The hummus is smooth and tangy.. yum... If you're in Robbinsdale, give Athens a try.
(4)Mezzo D.
We really like this place a lot. It's great fare--hummus and falafel are terrific, and our kids love the chicken or lamb gyros. The Greek salad is yummy, too. Don't let the unassuming location fool you; it's really quite good.
(4)Gary D.
Needed to update - - this is the best tabbouleh I have ever eaten; fresh, flavorful, fantastic.
(4)Rachel G.
Don't get the gyro. Get the Kabob. Yum-o. Veggies are done near perfect, bigs chunks of meat - great hummus. Rice is...ok. Atmosphere = none. It feels like you are in a hospital dinning room. But the service is great. And whodda thunk there could be Greek food in Robbinsdale!
(3)Tim K.
The hummus is outstanding - the best in the Twin Cities. I've tried hummus from darn near every restaurant in town and this place is fantastic.
(5)Jeremy C.
Did a chicken and lamb gyro platter for lunch. The chicken was served with onions and had a strong flavor. The lamb was really good. I took the hummus as a side dish. It was alright by itself but it added quite nicely to the gyro meat. The prices were cheap considering it could have fed two people ($7.59 w/ soda). The atmosphere is a little unbecoming. They were friendly and pretty quick considering the place was almost full.
(3)Dena S.
I worked in the U.S. Bank building next door to Athens for two plus years and have worked elsewhere for over a year now. To this very goddamned day, I walk into the Athens and the dudes behind the counter instantly yell "SPINACH PIE!" If I were ever so slightly less awesome, this would be embarrassing.
(3)Laura T.
Excellent food, and a lot of it. Very authentic cuisine. Would recommend it to friends!
(5)Errol P.
Bad, bad, bad. I mean, I don't have many expectations for gourmet food in Robbinsdale, but still. The "gyro" I got was overdried meat with chunks of iceberg lettuce in a crappy fall-apart cheap-ass supermarket pita. I also ordered a Turkish coffee which I am pretty sure was just old burnt regular coffee with grinds in it. Barf.
(1)Salinee H.
Athens still has the best hummus in town....their food is top notch too. Tonight I went with the gyro combo platter, $9 for chicken, lamb, hummus, pita, salad, and a drink. I over ate tonight but I still have plenty to over eat at lunch. My aunt loves this place too, requesting it after we went a couple months ago. She asked why I don't eat here more often. The answer is easy in that if I did, I would want to pig out every time.
(5)Casey S.
I LOVE this place! For the same price as a gyro from the fair you will get a HUGE plate of Greek food. Lots of gyro meet, great hummus, and fries. Lots of other fun things to try too!
(5)John C.
So reviewers don't like the space, but where else can you can sit at a long counter and watch people file past one foot away while ordering their food. Having been here a few times over the past few years, I would recommend. In particular I had a chicken chunk dish that I loved. The gyro is ok, the rice dry, the baklava good size for the price, and the owner friendly. Unfortunately it sits in an even more unfortunate strip mall (is their any other kind), which detracts from what could have been a downtown feel of this small town.
(3)Kate W.
Basically my roommate and i cannot go without the Athen's hummus in our fridge for more than a couple of days. Their dolmades are some of the best i've ever had. I've brought the gyro's dinner x4 to family dinners and everyone loved it. This is one of the reasons i feel lucky to live in Robbinsdale, to have the number one greek specialty restaurant within walking distance. Also, it is great that they are open until 9:00pm since almost nothing is open until 9pm in this town except for the bars. Super friendly, awesome, accommodating staff. I really love this place.
(5)Amy T.
A casual restaurant with great food! Not a fancy store front and it's located in a strip mall, but the food hits the spot. They have great gyros and fries. The gyros are very generously sized. You can get 2 gyro combos (gyro, fries, and drink) for $10 with their coupon you get in the city mail advertisements. AWESOME DEAL! The gyro meat had just the right flavor and texture. The workers are nice and efficient. You have the option for hot tea with the combo meal, which is a nice touch. My boyfriend and I love coming here after a long day at work or for a quick weekend lunch.
(5)amanda d.
If they didn't use styrofoam for take out, I'd give this restaurant five stars. The hummus is so creamy and flavorful and this is the only place that I know of that services spicy falafel. So delicious! I also appreciate how many vegetarian options they have available on their menu. The price is very reasonable as well. The staff is very friendly and I always get great customer service too.
(4)Kevin B.
Service is always great. The kind of food you can't find very often, and it's always well prepared. I'm a sucker for the hummus, fries and kebab. Never had a bad experience there, but to be honest, I never "dine in" as I live close enough to carry the food home. I can see how some reviewers would shave a point for ambiance, but, that's not really what Athens is about.
