OK, for years there has been the Matt's vs 5-8 Club rivalry thanks to both claiming to be the home of the original Juicy Lucy. As someone who grew up a Matt's man I never gave this place a second thought because well, to my family going here was fighting words. My wife on the other hand really wanted to try it out and had no emotional ties to either so she cared nothing about said rivalry. Well, on our last night up there we went to the 5-8 Club and I can say, even though I know my folks are looking down with anger on their faces I am glad we did. We started off by ordering some cheese curds which were great and there were a lot of them. Then, to settle the debate over which place had the best Juicy Lucy we both order them with pepper jack cheese. They do come with fries and slaw unlike Matt's so that is a huge plus. As for the Juicy Lucy, starting off with the bun, the bun was outstanding. They get them in from a local bakery and you can really taste the freshness. The burger itself, it was much bigger than I expected, bigger than Matt's. It was far more flavorful and inside there was much more cheese. When we were done I had settled the debate over which place has the best Juicy Lucy and it is here hands down.

A Lake Nokomis favorite!! Love going there with my kids as the menu has something for everyone! Very kid friendly and servers are always friendly. FYI, it's seat yourself, which tends to prove challenging for uptight S. Mpls peeps!!!! Food is good and of course who doesn't want to eat at a former speak easy.

I've been driving by this place for 20 years thinking that it was one of the casualties of the declining economy, I should have been so lucky! I was asked along by a very eager friend who is follower of the slob television community. Fried cheese curds are alien to most people, but I'd drive many miles for them....if they're good. The ones I had at 5-8 were the standard frozen-plastic-cheese-like product, just add hot fat and let steep. For the price you'd think they could have involved some real cheese (it's only steps to the Wisconsin border folks). The highly-tooted, food-wars hyped juicy lucy, jucy loosey, juicy l..... however they misspell it...is a blanket of 2 very thin wafers of meat molded around some more cheese-like substance (this time the liquid variety, oh yay) gasping for moistness between two thick slices of dried out dense glue-factory style bread. The service was minimal and the atmosphere non-existent (unless you're one of the loud drunks at the bar). The only impression this place makes is on the wallet, or is that 'depression'. Skip it, you'll get better service and flavor under the golden arches!

Much has been written on the famous Juicy Lucy served by the 5-8 Club. I must confess I've never had one. However, I have always had exceptional service at the 5-8 Club. Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of the Haystack Onions, which offer plenty to share with friends so split the order! The food here has been good every time I've stopped in, which isn't often enough for me. I always opt for a burger and a beer, but there are other options on the menu. The only thing lacking (in my opnion) is a full bar. This is a former speakeasy, so where's the hooch?

I have lived in Minnesota, in or not far from the cities, for 23 years. I do have to say I am slightly ashamed that it took me 23 long years to try a Juicy Lucy. But what's worse than the shame is the regret. I know there are over 100 reviews on how AMAZING the Juicy Lucy is at 5-8 Club, but seriously better than you can describe. Order with Pepperjack, top with fried onions, and pile on the ketchup and mustard. And order a side of fries and coleslaw. And a beer. So good I almost ordered another Lucy immediately after I had finished mine. Plus they are CHEAP. I love me some cheap, delicious food. Just so you know, you will probably have to wait in a fairly long line (out the door) but it goes much faster than you think and it is most definitely worth it.

I feel like I should do a public service and sit outside with a sign saying "Absolutely Do Not Waste Your Money Here!" Horrible burgers. Go elsewhere.

After waiting 20 minutes on a Friday night, we finally got to chomp down on the original Juicy Lucy. Spectacular? No. Better than your average burger? Yes. Worth the wait? There are plenty of other places that have a rendition of the Juicy Lucy and I'm sure are just as good, if not better. On a busy day, there isn't a hostess, so table stalk and hope you get a table fast. Otherwise be prepared to wait. 3 stars. Nothing really to complain about, but the burger just wasn't amazing.

If you know Twin Cities food then you likely know the Juicy Lucy. If you know the Juicy Lucy then you likely know the 5-8 Club and that other establishment just up the Cedar and their rivalry for who created the Juicy Lucy and who has the best. I've been to both and honestly, I don't have strong opinions on which has the best and really don't care who created it first. Today was my first visit to the 5-8 Club, which is somewhat surprising considering it's within reasonable lunch driving distance from work. We arrived pretty much at the peak of the lunch hour on a Friday and the place was packed. Despite that, we were seated promptly. 3 of us ordered the blue cheese lucy and the other two had the regular lucy. Food was delivered to us very quickly which, considering how busy they were was impressive. Everyone liked their burger and fries. My burger was cooked perfectly and stuffed with lovely melty blue cheese. Fries were hot and crispy. I'll definitely be back here for lunch again. Probably not some place I'd go to for happy hour or dinner though since it looked like their beer selection was pretty much macro-brews.

So, I have lived in the Twin Cities since 2001 with a four-year hiatus and had never experienced an authentic Juicy/Jucy Lucy before this summer. That changed when friends came to visit a little more than a week ago. Not only did I have the Juicy Lucy on my first visit, I had the Saucy Sally less than 48 hours after. The waitstaff at the 5-8 was friendly. I was surprised by the available seating. From the outside, you wouldn't think the 5-8 could accommodate as many patrons as they do. The patio helps and is nice. It helped that the weather was nice. I expected to burn the roof of my mouth when I first bit into the Juicy Lucy based on everything I'd seen and read but this didn't happen. The burger was massive but not gross or grotesque. I enjoyed it very much. I almost feel guilty for admitting this here but I think I liked the Saucy Sally better. It was like a homemade Big Mac on steroids and I loved it. I feel like I have to try Matt's before I can pledge my undying devotion to the 5-8 but I can declare that I will return and will have no reservations about bringing friends here.

I came, I saw, I tried the Juicy Lucy and was not impressed. Sure the burger had a ton of American cheese oozing out of it. But the burger itself was plain, dry and tasteless. I was expecting so much more especially considering the rivalry with Matt's Bar. Unfortunately 5-8 just doesn't live up to the hype. I will give props to their onion rings. Those were delicious and yummy. They weren't greasy or overcooked. Probably one of the better onion rings I've had in a long time. 5-8 definitely has a bigger menu and I will be willing to try other items. The restaurant definitely would be an awesome place to grab a few brews before a baseball or hockey game. But don't get your hopes up for the (un)Juicy Lucy.

This was stop one in my Jucy Lucy tour here in the Twin Cities. Prior to coming here to MSP I have had a Jucy Lucy before at a Burger Bar (that I am Duke of that I will leave nameless) and it was pretty nom. With Minneapolis being the birth place of this cholesterol concoction, it would be sacrilegious not to try one and add my 2 cents on the debate. Synopsis, Went here for lunch today and it was PACKED! We had to wait for an open seat and then plow our way to it because some other guests don't understand the concept of waiting their turn. With it being lunch hour and all, service was a bit on the slow side but never the less they were all very pleasant and provided good courteous service. The food: So I had the fabled Jucy Lucy with pepper jack cheese for the filling. It did not disappoint! The patty was a very generous hand made portion that was overloaded with onions. The bun was just a plain simple bun. It would've been spectacular if it was butter toasted (hint hint) The fries and the slaw were nothing spectacular but were still good. This place left a good taste in my mouth (no pun) but I need compare it to the other runners before I say its the best. More to come....

Came here for their famous Juicy Lucy at the boyfriend's recommendation - he's actually tried replicating their original at home to no avail. LOL. No offense to him. Their Juicy Lucy was extremely yummy! To first-timers, please pay attention to the menu's cautionary note about biting into the burger then having hot cheese ooze out. Service was good for us. Our server was nice, patient and quick to bring us our food and drinks. She wasn't overly personable, but we have nothing to complain about her. Checked on us a couple times Food came up to us at the same time and was still warm from the kitchen. Again, it was all yummy.

A solid showing for a juicy lucy. I'm ashamed to say I never ate here or tried a juicy lucy while I lived in Minnesota but I was excited to visit the famous 5-8 Bar, established originally as a speakeasy in 1928. I got the blue cheese stuffed burger with fries. The burger was solid, nothing extraordinary but not terrible. I didn't use any ketchup which for me is the perennial sign of a decent patty. The fries were deliciously fresh and the onion rings had serious crunch to the batter. Definitely a must have! The ambiance was that of a local dive bar down to the brown chipped walls and old movie posters. A local institution with a famously original burger. Stop by for no other reason than to say you've been to the original 5-8.

I was really craving a big fat juicy burger, so I swung into the 5-8 to try out their burgers. I was very disappointed. The meat and the bun were very dry, the only thing "juicy" was the American cheese, which wasn't very tasty because it was a chunky warm substance that would ooze out of my burger when I squished it down. The bun was dry, dry like the last bun in the bag that no one knows what to do with after a bbq. To my suprise, after 4 bites, I found two tiny pickles. I am not sure if the burgers come with pickles ooooor if this was a weird oops. I really hope the burgers come with pickles! :/ The coleslaw was good, but store bought. The french fries were crunchy, which I like, but very unoriginal, average, blah. Overall, I would say that there is no love put into the food. Nothing is homemade or made from scratch. Nothing about the 5-8 Club makes it a place I would crave because I can get a boring burger and boring fries at any bar. There isnt even a special seasoning, or exciting topping, that would make this place an original. It is a Tuesday at noon, and took me less than 20min to sit, order, eat, and write this review in my car. Thats how boring and lifeless this place is. There are so many unique and flavorful places in, and around, the Twin Cities that I would not take out of town guests here.

Decided to go visit the infamous 5-8 club! Thanks to the travel Channel I was super stoked to be in the home of the original Juicy Lucy!! Of course being in Minnesota had to get the cheese curds. They definitely weren't like the fair cheese curds but they were good. I ordered the original juicy Lucy with added bacon, and stuff pepper jack cheese! I also switched up the buns for the garlic bun! Of course we got the jojo's and the onion rings! It was absolutely delicious! Of course I had to take a gigantic by and try to squish out all of the hot melty cheese! If you've never had this before having it with pepper jack gives it just that extra little kick!! The place itself was lively and the waitstaff was pretty cool! on the way out, I absolutely had to get a picture where man versus food Adam Richman was there!

I couldn't write this review until I had tried both restaurants claiming to be the home of the Juicy Lucy. We tried both in one day and now I can say that 5-8 Club definitely makes a better Juicy Lucy! It was thicker and the melted cheese was a nice thick creamy consistency; which I prefer. The French fries were better here also. I personally would recommend this place for this Minneapolis tradition!

This place has been packed both times I've visited. Priced very reasonably and staffed with personnel who hustle with a nice smile. The burgers are very good and filling. I always leave know I g that I probably ate too much and I a big guy at 6'3".

Matt's vs. 5-8 Club... 5-8 WINS IN MY BOOK. This restaurant actually has more of a restaurant vibe than a dive bar. I loved my burger! Of course I got a juicy lucy. I like that they have way more options when it comes to the cheese and toppings, and also the fact that you can order other things on their menu. Very good, fast service, I'll be back.

Since moving to Minnesota, I've had many a Juicy Lucy. My husband and I had been anxiously anticipating trying out the 5-8 Club as they are one of the two restaurants in the Twin Cities who claim to have the best. Well, the best, this is not. I was incredibly underwhelmed by my experience at the 5-8 Club. It's not that the burger was bad, it was fine, but that's all it was - a fine burger. Nothing special, certainly not "the best". In fact, compared to all of the other places I have had a Juicy Lucy, this doesn't come anywhere close to the top of my list. As I waffled over what rating to give this place, the fact that I don't even see myself ever returning made me realize what a disappointing meal I truly had. Save your money and time and go to one of the many other establishments in the cities with a much better burger!

    (2)
  • Adam K.

In my opinion, they make the best juicy Lucy in the city. The fact you can choose what type of cheese to include in your Lucy, makes a big difference. The place is an institution. It's famous for the burger, not for being high class. It boarders on being a dive bar, in a good way. The staff have always been friendly and speedy. Skip the onion strings / rings; they're simply far to greasy.

My brother recommended this place for its Juicy Lucy burger - it has cheese in the center. Although this wasn't my choice spot to eat, it was good and tasty. The restaurant is located near the airport, so you can see the planes fly in. We sat on the patio side (it's screened in so no worries for bugs). It was pretty busy but that didn't seem to affect the staff or turn around for food.

This place is one of the 2 hosts of the "Juicy Lucy" burger. Which is famous here. While I didn't get one a friend of mine did and said "it wasn't as juicy as I was expecting, but it was delicious. I don't recommend american cheese... Maybe cheddar would have been more of a sophisticated flavor, but the fries and coleslaw was good," it was also average priced at about 10 dollars for a burger meal-but they don't have a kid menu-however if your looking for something cheaper they had a 4.99 hotdog meal that I enjoyed. As for service there was room for improvement, we didn't get checked up on, and we waited a while for our drinks. Lastly the environment was as expected a bar setting, with high tables in the back, in the front there is booths so they do provide both family and adult areas-and I do believe they have outdoor seating. I do recommend this place for anyone craving a good burger!

The most overrated burger spot I tried in Minneapolis. The appetizers were below average. There was a long wait for a table. The burger was still enjoyable, but my least favorite of all the famous Jucy Lucy locations. You kind of have to try it to compare to the others, but here's how I judged the match... Matt's Bar: 8/10 5-8: 6/10 The Nook: 10/10 Blue Door Pub: 9/10

I came here in great anticipation of the "world famous Juicy Lucy" burger. We came in and got a table right away. Ordered fried pickles and fried cheese curds. Came out fairly quickly and was piping hot. Great appetizers. From here, it was all downhill. Took a long time for waitress to come back for test of order. She cut our order short, not even asking what kind of cheese I wanted in my juicy Lucy or what side I preferred. Took a while to get dinner and I was extremely disappointed. Burger was small and dry. Overcooked and no flavor. My husband makes a better burger. I had also hoped for sweet potato fries but was given no opportunity to order them. Not worth the time or gas. I'll save my "best burger" recommendation for The Thurman Cafe in Columbus, OH.

I've only been here twice. I love the food! The Saucy Sally is amazing. Only two complaints: During both of my experiences my order was messed up. The first time I was there they gave me regular fries instead of what I ordered (which was sweet potato fries)and the Second time they completely screwed up my order on the fries and the burger, except for the gluten free bun that I had asked for. They were also very busy and slow/understaffed. But in the end, they accommodated their screw up with discounted meal prices and extra fries. And it was clearly seen that the servers were working their butts off! My advice: Don't go on the weekend if you don't want a super busy environment and make sure to order a burger!

Had the opportunity to taste this classic on my business trip. I tried Matts before, was good but I am judging independently. I had the classic with American, my co worker got the pepper jack. Both were great, fries were done nice. I wish the burger had a hair more seasoning on it, I wanted to taste it as its served. The extra napkins on the table were definitely needed!! Close to the Minneapolis airport, easy to get to. Parking could be a challenge, by the time we left they were lined up the street. Very nice variety outside of the Juicy Lucy's. I'm not going down the "better than ....." Road. Both are nice places, and worth the visit.

Well it's here and still open so that's good, was in town for work and came here for the juicy Lucy. It looked great and figured it would probably be warm so I waited 5 minutes to eat my burger, took a bite and it spewed all over my hand and onto the cuff of my shirt giving me a nice burn and ruining a shirt. I had informed the waitress of this and got a "yes they are hot" and absolutely nothing more. Burger- matts is better Fries -matts is better Onions - matts is better This burger tastes ore made with inferior ingredients to matts, yes we can all be partial at times but matts clearly does a better job in all respects and the burger over there didn't burn me!

I ordered the Juicy Lucy with American cheese and fried onions (these are sauteed; I was expecting something more like onion straws for some reason but the sauteed onions were fine - just not was I was expecting). I would have liked to see Cheddar cheese on the menu but that is not available. One of my dining companions needed a gluten free bun and this was easily provided with no issues and he said it was good. Overall, the burger was very satisfying and I didn't not have the overly hot molten cheese experience that several people had warned me about. Everything tasted fresh with great flavor, and the server was very friendly. Everything we ordered came out quickly with no errors. I was also really pleased that there were several local beers available on tap and the server was knowledgeable about the flavor and character of each beer. I'd go back, I'd recommend this, and overall had a great experience.

Divey bar that I popped into for a beer with a friend. We sat at the bar and the server was very personable. We ordered a Juicy Lucy egg roll and it wasn't that great- mostly just cream cheese and sweet n sour sauce on the side. The prices are great! Oh, and they have a killer covered deck.

St. Patrick's Day. I was pumped for my first Juicy Lucy out of Minneapolis. I had no idea what to go with, but 5-8 Club was more memorable sounding to me then Matt's Bar. Service was beyond slow, despite hardly anyone being in the restaurant. But whatever, I was willing to wait for what the multiple TV channels have touted as an ideal Minnesota place to visit. Well, the burger wasn't anything beyond what you get at In-N-Out. Yes, there's the cheese on the inside, but the meat itself is dry and flavorless. It DEMANDS that cheese for the flavor. The fries are just as bland. The onions were good, but remind me exactly of In-N-Out, but for 1/2 the price. How disappointing. I will not come back.

Amazing burgers and friendly and fun service. The Juicy Lucy is phenomenal and other items are good as well. Make sure you get some fried cheese curds as an appetizer. A true Minneapolis institution that's a must visit if you're in town.

Maybe I went in with my expectations too high.... Juicy Lucy was good but underwhelming and only warm (I thought the point was piping hot to ooze cheese). Subbed jojos for my fries, huge disappointment! They were cold and under seasoned.

  • Karl W.

I've never had a fulfilling meal at 5-8 club and to compare their Juicy Lucy to Matt's is an insult. My most recent visit featured an overly dry burger with little flavor but had a decent amount of cheese. The fries included were room temperature and tasted bleh. I question if they freeze their patties because they are never very juicy, it's all about the cheese which I don't find rewarding. I was never asked how I liked my meal and the table of patrons behind me were getting something comp'd on their bill. I wish I would have said at least something. I want to like 5-8 Club but it never satisfies me. I give it an extra star because I realize it's a local institution for close to a century.

Food was good. Not exceptional. The ambiance was non existent and very fast food like. Truthfully Matts jucy Lucy burger was much better and the place was a cool joint. Wanted to try both out. Matts has my vote hands down!!!

We bopped into 5-8 Club for late lunch on a recent Friday. It had been a busy week and the greasy Juicy Lucy's seemed like just the remedy! I give the food at 5-8 four to five stars but the service was a two or three and that's a big drawback. While the burger didn't disappoint (it was perfectly cooked and packed with molten cheese), the wait time between everything was way too long and the server wasn't even remotely polite or apologetic about it. We were there around 2pm on a Friday and with a table of 5 it took us close to two hours to get lunch resulting in a late work day on a Friday (boo). The server seemed busy and overworked but taking that out on the customer is just plain tacky. Tables around us came and went while we waited and I still have no idea what the hold up was. Our appetizers were all greasy but not bad. The cheese curds were a little overcooked and hard (as opposed to soft and cheesy). The potato skins were good though! I'd for sure come back because of the good Juicy Lucy but would hope for a day when there were different servers or at least more of them.

The Jucy Lucy is one of the best burgers that I've had in the US! It is perfect! The volcano if cheese makes you think about moving to MN! Well, not quite but close! Go there, then go again!

So I finally had the famous Juicy Lucy burger. I was surprised (disappointed) to discover cheddar cheese was not an option listed on their menu. In their defense I never asked if it was a choice, so I opted for the pepper jack. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the burger. I was just a little taken aback about cheddar not being listed...it seems like such a cheese standard (for me apparently).

My 5-8 Club experience began with a jubilant proclamation from my resident foodie friend: *with much excitement* "we HAVE to get Juicy Lucy's!" Caught off guard and slightly repulsed, we piled into my friend's car, bound for another culinary (mis)adventure. I'll start by saying it's quite a sojourn to The 5-8. Located out by the MSP airport and tucked off a frontage road in a residential area, we arrived on an early afternoon to find a line of waiting patrons that extended out into the parking lot. Having already rejected Matt's Bar for a similar line with wait times unknown, we prepared to issue a veto similar to the one we issued Matt. Undeterred, our foodie friend attempted to rally the troops; we relented and proceeded to spend the next 30 minutes on foot, anxiously anticipating Lucy's juiciness. When the clouds parted and the chance to snag a booth opened, we piled in and ordered in a hurry: beers, apps, oh-so-Juicy Lucy. Now. Unbeknownst to my group, the lengthy wait extended indoors and, after we took turns throwing expectant looks to the kitchen window and I drank enough beer to make me forget I was ever hungry, the food arrived. And for us all, it just kind of fell flat. Outside of the higher level of decorum a restaurant atmosphere demands, the food and atmosphere were as flavorless and accessible as the yearly company cookout, complete with frozen, from-a-box burgers, iceberg lettuce salad, and questionable beer selections. I ate a small bit of what I'd ordered, but requested a to-go box that I immediately upturned my food onto and later shoved under the front seat of my friend's car. Most telling, and a real commentary on the grub, was the fact that we all took food to go; a real surprise because some in our party can really put it away! Grudgingly, we paid and piled back into the car, stonily regarding our foodie friend who had led us astray, while wondering just what the Hell all of this fuss over Lucy was ever about. Happy to say I've experienced a Juicy Lucy, but I think I've had my first...and last.

Was very happy with their juicy Lucy- the cheese was so creamy, I preferred it over Matts and Buffalo Tap in Savage, MN personally. I'll be back!

The food is great, I love that I can pick my cheese in a Juicy Lucy. However I feel the service here is lacking. No one ever acknowledges you as they run around helping everyone else. A "Hi there, I'll be right with you." would go a long way at this place. The wait staff seem to have plenty of time to jibber jabber at the bar though. Wouldn't take much to bump them up to a four, just work on making your customers feel like you care.

Very unaccomidating to large groups! Food was just so-so. Would never go there again for a juicy Lucy. Wasn't anything compared to Matt's!

Okay so the last time Baboy was in Minnesota visiting with our other friend, we decided we must have a Juicy Lucy. There are so many spots. Where do we go?!! The first time it was Matt's Bar. THIS time it was the 5-8 Club. NOW I SEE THE LIGHT!! The Juicy Lucy was SO gooey and delicious OOZING with cheese!! They had a lot of different Juicy Lucy's but we decided on the original. Meat and cheese baby. If you are trying to decided where to get your Juicy Lucy experience, THIS IS THE SPOT!!! HANDS DOWN!

Well. Without getting into the whole Matt's/5-8 debate, I will just say that I did indeed enjoy my Lucy at 5-8. When I bit into my burger, it actually made a very small popping sound as I bit through the molten cheese pocket in the middle. The Lucys here come with that beautiful crunchy crust on the outside that you can only get by cooking a burger on a griddle that has cooked thousands of burgers over the years. It was super well-made -- no cheese escaping out the side, no separation between the two sides of the burger holding in all that cheese. It was greasy, cheesey and pretty tasty. Recommend getting with grilled onions on top, which you can smell all the way from outside the building. We also got the fries (OK) and onion rings (better). We also tried the wings, which were actually pretty decent. Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside and covered in a nice sweet sauce. The Ranch that came with it was a bit thin to me -- wished for good thick Ranch that sticks to the wing. But that's my only complaint. I superbly appreciated that even though they have Pepsi in their fountain beverage slot, they still offered Coke products in cans. Gives you the option if you are loyal to one brand in the cola wars. Otherwise, liked the decor, which was fun to look at. Thought our service was just average -- our waitress was slow and a bit distracted at times. I asked for water and she pretty much forgot until about 20 minutes later. But we still enjoyed it and thought the Lucy was solid overall.

New in town so I have been wanting to try the two restaurants that claim to be home of the Original Juicy Lucy. As much as I love sweets, I don't care for sweet hamburger buns. If I am correct, it's a potato bread bun. Compared to Matt's Bar, the hamburger patty is thicker in size but the patty is not seasoned well. The French fries are thick but mine were served slightly cold, so I only ate a couple. Actually my burger wasn't hot either, but I don't care to blow my food before eating so I didn't complain about the warm burger and cold fries. Still haven't figured out who was the 'First to Invent' but I do appreciate the variety that The 5-8 club gives me. I was able to choose which type of cheese I wanted with my Juicy Lucy. Since, I like it spicy, I went with the Pepper Jack cheese. It helped give taste to the non seasoned patty. And even though I can go the rest of my life without ever eating coleslaw, I admit the coleslaw that is served on the side was very flavorful! The sliced fried onions were a nice treat, also. Note, The 5-8 club has its own private parking lot so there will be ample parking.

Try other places for a Juicy Lucy, just to compare, but don't miss the 5-8 Club.....absolutely great experience. Had a loaded Juicy Lucy and it was excellent. Fries were good too. Waitress was a extremely friendly.

So after a long day of shopping my friends and I decided we wanted something good to eat before heading home. Now I've never been a burger guy (for some reason I just don't like the taste) but I decided to take one for the team and go to 5-8 Club which has it's famous Juicy Lucy. Once we arrived that's all I see throughout the restaurant. Once again I don't like hamburgers but I thought why not I'll give it a try. It was relatively cheap and had all these awards. I received my juicy Lucy and bit right in. Yeah I still don't like hamburgers. But my friends, a few who are fellow yelpers, thoroughly enjoyed it. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and great prices. It even convinced me to try the burger. Would recommend to all who visit

A big reason I came was because of it's appearance on man vs food. The Juicy Lucy burger is the clear favorite here, and I probably overhyped it for myself. Our food came out very quick, but it was a tad cold, which leads me to believe it might have been sitting out from a previous order. Our server was great, and I was still very satisfied. It is reasonably priced for the amount of food, but it might be a bit overhyped given it's creation of the "all famous" juicy lucy.

  • John E.

The juicy Lucy is worth a stop, but will not make your top ten burger list. Try it anyway!

    (4)
  • Bob A.

My wife, son and I stopped at the 5-8 to try one of those Juicy Lucy's we had heard about. I expected a lot but feel the burger fell short of my expectations. The burger was not very juicy, the meat was luke warm and the cheese was not even melted all the way through. The seasoning on the meat was lame. I gave it three stars instead of two because the fries that come with the burger were very good. Don't know if I will make a return trip or not.

  • Dave P.

After seeing it in man vs food, I had to go. But I didn't expect it to be so "diner-like", delicious food nontheless, only other problem was it was a little outside the city, you could probably find better atmosphere inside the twin cities without making the hike. But if you're in the area, definitely stop by and give the burgers a try

  • Meg N.

So to be fair I decided to try both the 5-8 Club and Matts since it seems that there is a non stop who is back and forth going on. I will say in both reviews that I give both equal stars (3.5 actually but I round up). One thing to note for anyone not a local coming to visit is that make sure you take the correct cedar ave exit because if you don't it turns into a little journey as cedar ave is a split road and the place is on the opposite side if you take the wrong cedar ave exit. pros the beef was medium rare which I love soft and squishy bun quaint diner feel to the place ridiculously decent price for the burger quick and friendly service clean cons I may have waited too long but the cheese in my juicy lucy solidified enough to the point where I did feel like I had nacho cheese inside my burger :/ maybe something other than american would have tasted better This was def not a challenge I would have taken if I was still trying to watch what I ate. I am sure the calorie count was over 1k but hey when in rome right?

I have a hard time writing two-star reviews, because I try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt. But 5-8 Club just left me disappointed, especially in light of the hype from their "rivalry" with Matt's Bar. After eating here, I don't think it's even a contest with Matt's. A few thoughts on my rationale: 1) Poor service. Our server was apparently juggling far too many tables; she just seemed swamped. We had to request her attention three separate times during the meal, and each time, we felt like an imposition on her. It's understandable when a server is overworked; however, I at least expect some level of friendliness and/or apologies for forgetting things, and for leaving us hanging with empty drinks for 10 minutes. It's just not a fun feeling. Why not hire one extra person to simply offer drink refills across the restaurant? They could carry two pitchers of water and make sure everyone is hydrated. How much stress would that relieve on our server? Quite a bit. I want to dine at restaurants that appreciate my business. I should feel welcomed in, along with a sense of their eagerness to win repeat business. 2) Sub-par food. As others here have mentioned, my burger was luke-warm. The cheese was not very hot at all, and the beef was uninspiring. We also ordered onion rings, and they were also forgettable. Basically, the Juicy Lucy is not juicy. When you think of Matt's, you get a fuzzy feeling inside. Those burgers are SO JUICY and deliciously greasy. Eating at 5-8 Club made me feel like I was eating a reheated burger. It just tasted dry. 3) It's crowded. And I'm not really sure why. Does this place live on its reputation alone? No one in our group walked away saying anything about the food. Nada. Nor did anyone think to himself, "I can't wait to get back to 5-8 Club."

  • Krista E.

I love burgers. My main squeeze loves burgers. But 5-8 Club burgers? Well, a few thoughts: 1. The service is terrible. We spent a Monday night at this spot with another couple, and were repeatedly left waiting for drinks, condiments, food, etc. Our waitress didn't give us the time of day, and so I felt no guilt in tipping her accordingly. She kept forgetting drinks for half the group, while bringing additional cans of Diet Coke for the other half who had not requested them. What bar doesn't have DC fountain soda with free refills? This is not a gourmet eatery. 2. The burgers were 4 stars, but the fries and onion rings were a measly 3 star performance. Skip 5-8, head to Matt's and if you aren't feeling the line, take the plunge at 112 Eatery!

  • Raj L.

Not worth the trip. I have no idea what the hype is all about. My Jucy Lucy was anything but juicy. Very old stale Bun, and an overcooked dry burger. Yes it was filled with cheese but definitely not worth any of the hype. The restaurant is crammed into a residential neighborhood has an old, dingy, crappy 70's feel to it. YUCK!!!!!

  • Stephanie O.

This place is a bit of an institution, but to me it seems pretty typical of greasy burger and fry type joints. I've come here mostly to meet friends for drinks but I've tried their passable veggie burgers (pretty sure it was just a frozen prepackaged variety), their fries (just o-k), and their deep fried pickle chips (pretty decent but none will ever beat the State Fair). I also indulged in a bison burger once which was delicious. Granted, I love bison and will often order a bison burger if it's available on the menu. All in all, it's fine but nothing spectacular!

I wanted to love this place, as I've loved every other place I've tried in the cities with Juicy Lucy's, but I'm thinking they must've been having an off night when we came. I ordered the Juicy Lucy stuffed with bacon and cheese, only I'm convinced they forgot the cheese. I've had Juicy Lucy's before - I tried the original before eating Lucy's juiciness went mainstream, and before a couple famous guys took Lucy on TV and made her famous, so I knew what to expect from one. My Lucy was lacking on the juicy and was way overcooked, and that seemed to be the concensus with our whole group (8 of us, and 5 of us ordered some rendition of the Juicy Lucy). The service was ok, nothing great, nothing bad. I'd try this place again if I was with someone that REALLY wanted to go, but otherwise I'd stick to one of the other 3 places in the cities that I've tried, if I wanted a good Juicy Lucy. **REVIEW EDIT 12/12/2013** I think it is awesome that in spite of this being a very well loved restaurant by most people, the manager at 5-8 club still wanted to make things right from my visit, even though i am but one small little customer. For the time and effort they take in making sure their customers are happy, I am adding a 3rd star to my review. I am also planning to return and try this pig pen burger again, and will update my review again at that time. Thanks for caring about one little yelper's opinion of your establishment 5-8!!

Service here is SO rude. True, the setting is cleaner than Matt's, but that is it. Nothing else! The waitress wasn't even interested in talking to me and didn't even want to take my order. Assume I didn't want onions on my burger when in fact I did. When the burger came out, she had a "take it or leave it attitude" I ordered something to go and wanted it on another receipt. She ignored my request and put them together. She was pissed that I didn't tip on the to-go order and ended up putting in a bigger tip for herself which I just realized on my credit card! What a cheat!!! Definitely putting in a dispute!

We had a chance to stop for lunch on a Monday. Had the juicy Lucy and onion rings and my wife had fries with her burger. Excellent burgers and service. Hard to believe drove by and never stopped for a juicy Lucy when we lived in minnesota, we moved and we now stop for the first time for a meal. We will be back next time in town. place was clean and good service. Side note, lived in mn all our life's and order fried onions on burgers. Try to order it that way in Iowa and you get a strange look and never know what you will get, usually a onion ring or sautéed onions in a dish.

Sorry, Matt's Bar, 5-8 Club's Juicy Luicy is far superior. At first glance of the menu, you think, "how can a Juicy Luicy be so different at two similar-setting bars?" Let me tell you: it's all in the cheese. Matt's Bar only offers American cheese to be put in between their patties, while 5-8 offers an assortment, including bleu. As someone who thinks American cheese is not only an insult to cheese, but an insult to America, I'd prefer a more high-brow selection for my fromage-filled burger of love. Call me a cheese snob, but my opinion won't change unless Matt's ups their selection. 5-8 Club is a nice, grandma's-house-meets-biker-bar atmosphere, which sounds bizarre, but understandable once you try it out, yourself. Our waitress was an adorable woman in her mid-60's, and service was decent. The highlight was obviously each and every bite of cheesy, Lucy goodness, and if you're as particular about your quality of cheese, I'd go 5-8.

After seeing this place on Man vs Food on the Travel Channel I had to stop by and try the famous Juicy Lucy. Tucked away in a residential area, the 5-8 Club was definitely not what I thought it would be. Although small, they managed to cram in a lot of small tables and booths. I think I was too excited and had way too high of expectations for this so-called "amazing" burger.... Not to say that it was bad, but it fell a little short of what I was hoping for. I had previously heard that many people burned themselves on the molten hot cheese inside the burgers so it makes sense that they don't serve the food as soon as it's done, for fear of having another person burn their mouth. But when my friend and I finally got our burgers they were barely warm... Like I said, totally understand not serving super hot burgers, but maybe don't wait TOO long, I don't really want to eat a barely warm burger that's been soaking in it's own grease. Also, the cheese inside tasted really cheap, like the Kraft American Singles, yuck. If you're going to spend the money on good beef, maybe also spend the extra money on some good cheese to go with it, especially being right next door to Wisconsin. The fries were really good! Overall, not nearly as good as I was hoping for, but not bad either, the beef tasted good, just wish they had some higher quality cheese. The atmosphere was pretty calm and relaxing and it seems like a good place to come on a Sunday afternoon without having to wait in line.

While on a work trip, my coworker and I went in search of the famed Juicy Lucy burger, and ended up at 5-8 Club. We knew we couldn't leave Minneapolis without trying it out! After several hit-or-miss experiences at other burger joints, I set my expectations pretty low at the 5-8. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my Juicy Lucy! This glorious, juicy beef patty, filled with perfectly melted American cheese, was one of the tastiest burgers I've ever had in my life! I'm still dreaming about it now, and bummed that I can't get a Juicy Lucy in Connecticut.

When it comes to the 5-8 Club/Matt's Bar rivalry, there's always a special place in my heart for Matt's Bar. When it comes to authenticity and ambiance, Matt's Bar wins. Matt's Bar did invent the Jucy Lucy, don't let anyone tel you otherwise. However, I believe 5-8 Club has the superior burger. The beef is thicker, seems higher quality, and the cheese is just the right consistency, melty without being runny. If you're coming back from an outing at Minnehaha Falls, this is a good place to get a good burger. Personally, I'm a completionist and value having an informed Jucy/Juicy Lucy opinion. If you're embarking on a Jucy Lucy pilgrimage, here is my recommendation, in order: 1) Matt's Bar: Experience the original where god intended. 2) 5-8 Club: Experience the rivalry, form your own sophisticated opinion and gain ammo for arguments when you inevitably fall on one side or the other. 3) Blue Door Pub: An innovative departure from the traditional with a variety of creative "blucy"s . If you go to the St. Paul location you will wait. Regardless of what side you fall on, let us find common ground with the fact that a well-made Jucy/Juicy Lucy is a taste of bubbling hot cheese paradise.

Although I am not a Minnesotan, I have spent enough time here to know that there are two things that first time visitors need to have - walleye and juicy Lucy's. So when I was entertaining some first timers I decided to head out to the 5-8 Club because it was more convenient than the Nook - which is the only place I had ever had one. I figured with all the hype and the tv shows and such - how bad could it be. Well - I found out that it could be pretty bad. The service was average, the drink refills were slow, and the burgers were lukewarm, dry and salty. No need to worry about the oozing cheese burning your mouth when it is not even melted. I was left spending the rest of the evening repeating, "you just don't understand - juicy Lucy's are AMAZING" to my very underwhelmed guests. 5-8 gets an extra star just from the cred you get saying that you have been to a place featured on TV, but it was disappointing - you can do better in a lot of other places.

Come for the tasty, stringy crunch onion rings, not for the juicy lucy. The one I received the other night had cheese inside that wasn't even fully melted yet. Was disappointed, but the place is a nice hidden gem.

Cheese flowing out beef. I mean, really, what is there not to love? Well, I suppose the vegetarian parties might not agree with me here. This place is generally packed almost all the time and I believe it is because of the food. There is not one healthy thing on that menu and so, go for it. This is a diet breaking kind of place, be prepared. While the line out the door is infinite, it does not seem to take very long to get in, get seated, eat and move to a more comfortable spot to digest. They seem to have the whole thing down to a science to keep people moving in and out. If you don't like be potential close to others, this probably is not the place for you. The seating it tight but reasonable. It appears to all be in an effort to maximize capacity. I order the standard Juicy Lucy. They offer various cheeses that can be place in the burger. I couldn't tell you anything about the taste as this is one of those times in life I choose to go traditional. I like it and I am not going to try anything else. Super fun place to take people from out of town. Great place to crash after a local softball game. There are pull tabs and a bar. There are a few TVs around. They have a patio for seating as well.

Finally had the famous Juicy Lucy from the 5-8 Club today and I have to say that it was one of the worst burgers that I've eaten. I'll have to try it again at a different date because I hope it was a fluke. There is zero possibility this is the famous burger that people love so much. It tasted fresh off of a Foreman grill. Part of what makes a burger great is the seasoning of the meat, this meat was dry and flavorless.

Came here with the BF and a good friend to try their Juicy Lucy as two of us had never had a Juicy Lucy before! After seeing this place on the Travel Channel long ago we decided to try this out first (plus, it was closer than Matt's Bar). We were seated quickly and our waitress and overall service was great--orders promptly taken, waters filled frequently and check-ins to make sure everything was okay. No doubt I was getting their signature burger, but I didn't realize there were options for the cheese stuffing. After some inner debate, I went with the blue cheese stuffing and grilled onions, which were great choices. I like blue cheese to begin with, so I didn't feel it was so pungent it overtook the rest of the burger, nor was it saltier than I expected. The fries that came with were good and of course we washed everything down with a pitcher of pumpkin beer. Was STUFFED by the end of the meal and could have fallen asleep easily on the light rail back to school. It was a great first Juicy Lucy experience, and now we'll have to go try out the other place for comparison. If we were smart (and had more time), we should have just ordered one or two to share and driven over to Matt's and shared a burger to see which was better. But I do love their saying, If it isn't spelled right, it isn't done right!

Their juicy Lucy's are ok. Not as good as matts and the blue door. Burgers are a little too heavy for my taste. Onion rings are awesome though.

Such a BUSY & SMALL place!! If they could expand, that would be Awesome! We waited in line for 15 min, not bad for a Saturday night. You're so crammed in line, that you are literally, just feet away from customers sitting at their tables. Good food. Just way tooooooo compact.

The Juicy Lucy and Saucy Sally are two of the tastiest burgers that have ever entered my chompers! The fries are bad either. The service is slow and it is seat yourself, so bring your patience along for the ride. I have a lot of customers up in the Minneapolis area, and play in the US Pond Hockey Championships on Lake Nokomis, so whenever I am up der this is a must stop! I have tried Matt's a few times, but 5-8 Club is the champ!

My dad and I was going to go to Matt's Bar and have dinner there, but the line was out the door there, so we went down the street to the 5-8 Club. I ordered the "world famous" Juicy Lucy with fries and my dad ordered a plain cheeseburger with fries. My dad was satisfied with his burger but my Juicy Lucy was probably the best burger I've ever had in my life! Just remember that if you do order the Juicy Lucy, it takes a little longer to cook than a regular cheeseburger, but it's worth the wait. I'd definitely go back here again! :-)

  • Cyril J.

The Juicy Lucy here is one of the best I have had. With that said the taste of the meat is good but not incredible, it's the cheese that does it. Service is usually great as long as it's not packed but that goes with the hype. Although I love it they can lack consistency on occasion, I have sometimes been disappointed by the amount of cheese inside or size of the patty. But either way still the best Juicy Lucy I have had and a must try.

  • Chris S.

Well, I yelped myself here, realized I'd seen the food network show, and had modestly high hopes. Fact is that my blue cheese juicy Lucy was really nothing special. Good, but far from outstanding, let alone award winning. On the other hand, I'm a fan of the community table, and joined an already seated couple occupying a 6 top. They immediately offered up some of their onion straws. These are what onion rings should be. I had a side of "D.F.P.C" deep fried pickle chips in addition to the fries that came with my burger. Really really good, as we're the fries. In short. Order goodness from the fryer, wash it down with a Grain Belt, and you are golden.

Nice little place just north of the Mall of America. Home of the Jucy Lucy but they do have other food. Although it is always busy, definitely worth the 5-10 min wait for a table. The food is great at a reasonable price. The fries could be improved, but they are still quality. Comparing this to Matts is almost apples and oranges to me, but to each their own.

  • LB L.

This was a good place. The fried pickles were outstanding! The juicy Lucy was good, but not the best I've ever had. I tried the Saucy Sally which was fine, but the sauce wasn't as tasty as I expected since I was hoping for something of at least the calibre of In-N-Out. I might go back, but only if I was in the area.

Fine, just not great. Good: - There was a lot of cheese in the Juicy Lucy. I liked that. - The ambiance was cool. Definitely a dive-type place. - The waitress was nice and upbeat. She came back around not too often, but often enough. - I liked the beer option where you could get just 9 oz for $2.50. That's great for those of us who like a beer with our meal, but don't want to drink a whole tall glass. - The food came out in a timely enough fashion. It wasn't all that quick, but a reasonable amount of time. - The prices were reasonable. Bad: - The Juicy Lucy was good, just not great. It may be my out-of-town ignorance, but I can't see what's so awesome about having the cheese inside the burger. If it were just piled on top of the meat, it would have the same effect. Sacrilegious, I know. - The onion rings had very thick breading and were pretty standard. Obviously frozen. Meh. - The jojos were supposed to be a special, so we tried those. They were basically just steak fries with a lot if cheese, bacon bits, and chives on top. Good, but nothing special. All around, the food was fine enough, especially for what we paid. But it's nothing to write home about. Bars like these are on every corner. It was average.

Set you self up for dive restaurant so you don't come with an elevated expectation. It's a seat yourself, come one come all, hang your hat at the door hole in the wall. Service was good and the food is unhealthily good. Now that I have been to both Matt's and the 5-8 Club I would give my token to the 5-8 for their Juicy Lucy. It was creamy, meaty devine.

    (3)
  • Matt A.

Such high expectations of the famous Juicy Lucy were shattered with a dry burger with very little cheese that wasn't even melted. Lucy, you were not very juicy (that sounds terrible). Very little seasoning on the burger itself led to an even more devastating blow to my excitement. Maybe I came at a bad time. I'd be willing to give it another shot since the place was a complete dive with good service.

My favorite spot for a Juicy in Minnesota. Always tasty. Good fries and beer selection. Service is hit or miss but it could be horrible and I'd probably still go for one of the greatest burgers ever. PS. Servings are bigger than Matt's, prices are lower than Matt's, taste is better than Matt's, and you can sit down while waiting for your food instead of standing in line for 30-45 minutes.

Delicious! Love the atmosphere. Had the Juicy Lucy and loved it! The service was quick, which is always a plus. Came here on a Monday and was able to get the very last table in the joint. Lucky us.

Who thought that having the cheese inside of the patty would make such a difference? Went here during a business trip during some down time. Heard about this place from Man V Food, and decided it would be fun to search it out. The Juicy Lucy did not disappoint. I probably would have ordered a second one if I hadn't gotten full from the huge order of onion straws which was big enough for at least 3 people. It was so good we made sure to come back again on a different business trip.

Apps were great. Fried pickles are a must. I had the juicy Lucy with blue cheese and added bacon. Burger only comes cooked one way, medium well. Which is a little too cooked for me. Service was very quick.

Hard to hate this place. It is exactly what it is. Lots of burger options. Light beer on tap. Greasy neighborhood bar. In a world of new tap rooms and new pubs (which I tend to love, don't get me wrong), this is a good old beer and burger bar.

Being in the Twin Cities for the first time, I had to get a juicy lucy. Of the 2 known establishments for creating it, I think I chose the wrong place. The burger and food was ok.. Nothing mind blowing. But the service left me feeling cold. It takes quit a bit for me to feel this way... Dropping off food without saying a word and making me feel rushed and treated like I'm not wanted will do that to me. So for my first time having a juicy lucy... I don't see what the fuss is all about.

On a recent vacation to Minneapolis, we decided a trip to one of the famous "Juicy Lucy" restaurants was in order. 5-8 ended up being closer to where we were staying, so it was the winner. It was a busy Saturday night, but we were able to get a table, and hungrily looked over the menu. There were a wide variety of different lucys, including the Pig Pen...a hamburger with cheese and bacon stuffed inside - so I had to get one of those. Positives: -Wide variety of Juicy lucy options (as well as other food). I've heard they also try out new Lucy combos from time to time. Will have to try the Saucy Sally next time. -Great burger and fry joint, with a good family atmosphere. Negatives: -Pretty small building, and it does fill up fast. If you arrive during dinner time or with a large group, be prepared to wait. The 5-8 Club is definitely a good choice for a Juicy Lucy....I will have to make it to Matt's and do a comparison (I've heard the Nook has good Lucy's too).

Arrived on a Friday around 1:30pm with no wait. Neither my husband or I like Juicy Lucy's but we figured if they can make a great Juicy Lucy, they should be able to make a great burger. Not so. My husband ordered the Garlic Burger. It was tiny, dry and flavorless with no lettuce or tomato added - much smaller than the bun. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and it was also tiny and dry with an excess of mayo that had to be scraped off and no Dijon available. I really like onion straws and they were good, but WAAAAY too large a serving even for 4 people let alone two. What a waste. No dark beer on tap, either. We will probably not return. It was not worth the effort it took to get there around all the construction.

Dirty and delicious. You can tell right away that this is a popular place as it is continually full. I love that it has been around forever and that it has a history. The Juicy Lucy was everything I hoped for, even the fact that it was lava hot on the inside. And the side potatoes were good too. Even my 5-month-old liked the jojos. Everyone in the area, visitor or not, needs to eat here at least once for the experience.

For an appetizer, we got the pizza fries. It was basically potato wedges with pizza cheese and sauce melted on top. It was delicious!!! The juicy lucy was a burger with cheese oozing out of the patty. Though I think the idea is very creative and has lots of potential, it wasn't that great. My reaction was that the burger was not cheesy enough... which clearly it had enough cheese but there was little flavor to that cheese... I would go back for the fries but not the Juicy Lucy.

Yep, saw this on TV, the Juicy Lucy war. Very Very unique Burger. Hard to judge, this place - i need a special category for these burgers. Very nice place, more family friendly. The cheese filled burger was as good as it sounds and looks. The bun was good, but not as good as Matt's. I liked the fries here better than Matt's, both were awesome and to die for, and a MUST Do when in MSP. Family liked this one best overall - i leaned more towards Matt's if i had two of them. --Ribchamp

OK, maybe it's me, but I just don't get it. After several discussions and disagreements in the office on where to enjoy the best Juicy Lucy, I ventured back to 5-8 Club to see if I could be convinced that their burger was a great choice. This may be heresy to some, but this was not a meal that would make me rush back, in fact, it is more a DNR. Let's get to the positives. I think the joint is an incredibly friendly neighborhood watering hole. It is separated into two rooms, one with a bar and the other entirely tables, with the walls teeming with relics of the 40s 50s and 60s. I sat as a solo diner amongst single dads taking their young kids out for a bite, elderly couples splitting French fries and soccer moms racing to that open table. I was now firmly ensconced in pure Americana...a smile came to my face. The waitress arrived, an energetic and incredibly hard-working high school / college teenager working for car money, college money or just entertainment money. She was great. The menu stated that the JL was 8-ounces, a pretty good sized patty, so my order was a JL with bacon and American, some fried onion straws, which I adore, a hot dog and an Arnold Palmer. The fried onion straws were excellent. A huge mound of thinly sliced, deep-fried onions (enough for multiple guests) was crispy and perfectly salted. They were so good that there was no need to dip in any ketchup. Good news over... Now let me be honest about my view on the JL...the patty was just horrible. There is absolutely nothing positive I can say about the meat. First the size...the menu says "8 ounces" and I would be hard pressed to believe it was more than five ounces. Then the kitchen cooks the doneness to greater than super well done, bordering on incinerated, losing all chance that it will retain any juiciness. And the flavor was tasteless. So the burger meat receives the trifecta, three zeros on taste, preparation and size. And the bacon was a perfect complement to the burger, two meager slices of overcooked bacon. On a slightly positive note, I did like the American cheese, really well melted and with just a touch of pungency. The pickles slices were also a positive; the roll was a pretty basic, what was to be expected in a bar. Now onto the hot dog. For full disclosure, I am a fan of a Kosher, natural casing dog so this was definitely not in my comfort zone. The hot dog was in the same category as the burger; an oversized, badly prepared "Ball Park" imitation; it was barely warm, and also served on a basic package roll. One bite and I was finished. With so many other choices for great burgers in MSP, I would be hard pressed to place this on a top-25 places to have a burger.

My 12 and 15 year old bottomless pits were a little apprehensive about their first Juicy Lucys but the bottomless sodas, amazing "originals" and quick service had their faces full and quietly contented, lol. Very family friendly, very comfortable. A true "burger joint" in the best sense of the phrase. Highly recommended! (the only thing holding back the 5th star was the waitresses determination not to get me a refill (although the kids seemed to get a reprieve from the pop boycott)

4.5 stars. How can you not be a fan of this place? The Juicy Lucy is great. 5-8 has other options besides American cheese. Bacon and cheddar stuffed into a burger? Awesome! It's one of the few places I've seen on TV that lived up to the hype. And I think Adam Richmond was on the money when he refused to pick a winner. Try both places (5-8 and Matt's). You know you want to, fatty! In fact, I ran into multiple people doing the same thing. I went to a 3rd place for a Blucy with blue cheese (instead of American). I had 5 of these cheese-stuffed burgers in 24 hrs and it was heaven...but I didn't shit right for a week! Story time: I was sitting at the bar alone (driving X/C), and I was talking to a retired postal carrier. He had a card that he punched when he ordered a burger, and after five of these delectable treats he got a T shirt. As luck would have it, this was his final punch and he offered me the "Free The Cheese" T Shirt. A very nice gesture indeed, and I still have it. It doesn't fit, largely because I eat too many cheeseburgers, but I keep it as a memento from the trip. (this is a retrospective - this X/C trip was in 2010)

This is number two review. Late last year I went to the Maplewood location. And got sick on the juicy Lucy. The management contacted me and gave me a gift card for a free meal. I thought that was cool. Yesterday, I went to the Minneapolis location. I ordered a Saucy Sally. well done. It was raw or close to it. I sent it back and let. the waitress know I needed it to go. I opened the container up and my fries were missing I asked for a Manager. She said there wasn't one on duty. I would have loved to eat my meal when it was hot. Two strikes your out. In my book.

Came here yesterday to try the famous "bleucy" and watch some Sunday night football. LITERALLY the best burger I have ever eaten! I highly recommend trying this place if you're just looking to do lunch/dinner. As a sports lounge... Not the best for watching sports. Not many TVs and the ones they had were really high up so it was hard to watch

Actually worse then before, which is really saying something! I generally avoid this place, but was invited to join a group of friends there. As usual, horrible service, bad food. For the life of me, I cannot understand how this restaurant is not only still in business but actually busy! Seriously, drive the blue door Longfellow. The food is better by a mile and the staff actually acts like they give a damn.

The 5-8 is a Minnesota burger institution which is why it pains me to only rate this place three stars. I've been to both this location and the one in Champlin and have never had bad service at either place. My friend and I stopped here on our way back from the MOA and wanted to grab a quick lunch while we were in the area. Although it was a Saturday afternoon we were seated relatively quickly and able to place our orders right away. Burgers are ordered separately from sides like fries and potato wedges which cost extra. Our Lucys arrived not too long after we placed our orders, which was amazing given how busy it was in the restaurant. I ordered the standard Lucy with American cheese and a potato wedges to accompany my burger. Everything was cooked the way I liked it, but there was just something missing. I can't tell you exactly what was absent from my burger but I suppose a little seasoning might have helped. My potato wedges and coleslaw were pretty standard, but in all honestly it's not these food items that bring people back.

Thus far I've avoided weighing in on the Jucy/Juicy Lucy/Nookie/Blucy controversy. There are passionate beliefs on all sides that are held with Old Testament fervor. Ravenous hordes of fierce partisans stand ready to come to their preferred burger's defense at the slightest hint of disrespect. One ventures into this fray at one's peril. Timid, tepid opinions seem unworthy of the level of fanatical zealotry. Starting with the 5-8 Club's Juicy Lucy let me say without reservation that it was... OK. What can I say? I ordered the classic with American cheese, topped with fried onions. Everything about it was perfectly acceptable. The cheese oozed out in tantilizing globs of molten orange. The bun was sturdy and held up well to the grease and cheese. But it just didn't have the ineffable character of a Jucy. Frankly, it was surprisingly lacking in flavor. The fries were good but not great. The tiny paper cup of slaw was almost an afterthought. I'll add that the staff is great. Wait times can get long but the line seems to move fairly briskly. Everybody always seems to be having a good time whenever I've stopped by. So, yeah. The Juicy Lucy gets's a timid, tepid three stars from me. But I like the neighborhood vibe so overall, the 5-8 gets a four.

Finally tried this place. Construction and tore up roads were a little annoying, but not a deterrent for us and friends visiting from out of state. We all loved our food. I had the Speak Easy burger and Onion Straws. Yum! Prices were very reasonable too.

Unimpressed. My Juicy Lucy was luke warm and tasted similar to ones from fast food chains. Service was slow. Definitely didn't live up to its hype. Don't think I'll be revisiting 5-8 Club.

On our last day to eat in Twin Cities, we decided to hit up a bunch of places before going back to Vegas. One of the places had to be 5-8 Club for their Juicy Lucy. I've had the Jucy Lucy at Matt's Bar a couple of years ago while visiting twin cities. Finally got a chance to do the taste test at 5-8 Club. 5-8 blows Matt's bar out of the sky. Fellow yelper and girlfriend agreed also. EYE LIKA CHU PEOPLES!!! We got the regular Juicy Lucy with raw onions on the side. Their burger really stood out compared to the other place. When we had the one at Matt's Bar, we all said that it was AIGHT. After finishing the Juicy Lucy at 5-8 Club, we both wanted to eat more. Unfortunately we had to skidaddle and inhale other dishes at other eateries. 5-8 Club is a definite come back the next time I'm visiting. YAY! I'M A FAN!!!

Was excited to try this place since I've already tried Matt's and The Nook and having read that they were #1 on the 101 best places to chow down from the Travel Channel. The good news was that unlike The Nook, there was no wait on a Saturday during lunch. In hindsight, that may have been a sign. Overall, we found the food very bland and not that great of quality. We both got the traditional juicy lucy burgers and they were under-seasoned and not that interesting. Also, the fries and onion rings were pretty standard like open up the ore ida bag and bake. Having tried the key places for a juicy lucy - I'd say hands down the winner in terms of flavor, texture, fries, onion rings is the Nook (as long as they are cooked right and this is where the Nook can be challenged. They can be very inconsistent in their preparation). Matt's is probably 2nd with a close tie from Blue Door Pub (although their burgers taste like I'm doing shots of Worcestershire sauce) and then last is the 5-8 club. On the plus side, service was prompt and friendly and - again - no wait on a Saturday. I just have no plans to go back with so many better options around including Gold Nugget in Minnetonka (see my review for that for details).

I was super excited to try the 'claimed' original Juicy Lucy! Let's just say I was a little dissapointed. I ended up ordering the Pig Pen, which is a bacon and cheese filled burger. After about 4 giant bites I finally got a tiny piece of bacon. The waitress was kind enough to bring me a few pieces of bacon to put on top of my burger, being there was non on the inside-so that was nice. I was also expecting oozing hot cheese, it was slightly melted and just warm enough. Overall, service was good, beer was cold, fries were declicious, but the burgers did not live up to the hype.

Most likely neither Matt'y bar or 5 8 club invented the stuffed cheese burger. They invented the name for it. There is a difference. So far I think they are both about the same and I was not impressed by either place. Just normal food.

Minneapolis is known for the famous "Juicy Lucy" hamburger and there are really only two places that are known for them. Ironically, they are both on Cedar Ave. in Minneapolis. I've been to Matt's Bar but had yet to try the 5-8 Club (5800 Cedar Ave S) and decided on a recent trip to the Cities that I'd give it a shot. My overall impression - it's good. I realize that saying "it's good" doesn't provide anyone with a sense of what to expect when you go there, but that's the best way to describe it. The food wasn't "out of this world awesome" and certainly wasn't "bad" by any means, but my impression was that the 5-8 Club is a "good" place to eat. The Juicy Lucy is a fine sandwich, nothing fancy, just like I would expect out of an eating establishment such as a "Club" or "Bar" that serves bar food. I enjoyed my juicy lucy about as much as I enjoyed the one from Matt's Bar up the road. The atmosphere here is about what you'd expect on a Friday night. The place was noisy and busy, but I thought the service was good considering. If you want to enjoy a good, original Minneapolis product, go to the 5-8 Club. Is this a 5-star restaurant? Nope. Is this a dive? Nope. It's right where it should be, in the middle.

So my last review went on about how I find this location frustrating with its slow service and how their softball sponsorship was difficult and downright frustrating as I had never received the check that was promised. A manager from the restaurant messaged me promptly asking for details and was tactfully apologetic for my experience. They then looked into their records and found that $212.50 was still due to me and sent me the check THE next day. I work at a place where without customer service, there is no business and that can make me a tough critic. But I have to say that I commend the 5-8 for not giving up on an upset customer and resurrecting that experience into a positive memorable one. Thanks 5-8 for not giving up on me. Therefore, I will not give up on you and we will see you soon. :-)

In the Matt's Bar vs. 5-8 Club Juicy Lucy Challenge... My vote is for 5-8 Club. Reasons: 1. Fresh Baked Buns from a local bakery 2. You get to choose your cheese filling (american, pepper jack, or bleu) 3. Onion rings are on the menu (not much of a french fry kinda girl) 4. The cheese is gooey and delicious, but less runny than Matt's Juicy Lucy which means more cheesy bites than Matt's I'd come back. My friend had the Saucy Sally - he said it might be the best burger he's ever had. That's a bold statement. Dont know if I agree, but they're definitely tasty. See pics of the Juicy Lucy & the Saucy Sally

Meh. Pretty disappointed. I'd been to Matt's for Juicy Lucy's plenty of times figured I'd try the other "originator." First off the atmosphere is terrible; I don't mean "divey" like Matt's, just like a run down AppleBee's inside; no character. The food was greasy and mediocre; juicy was bigger than Matt's but thats about all it had going for it. I recommend going to Matt's and ordering 2 if you are hungry and skipping 5-8 club. Also we went on a weekday night (wasn't busy) and all the tables were filled with trash; waitress said "sorry our busboy called in sick." But we watched her casually walk by gross dirty plates for 30 minutes until finally picking them up. I didn't know a waitress was too good to bus to a table. Kind of gross/weird.

Sorry 5-8, I don't think my burger lived up to the hype. My first time eating here and I actually live within a mile, I pondered between 2-3 stars for quite a while before making a decision, so lets call it 2.5 stars. I ordered for take out which might be my first mistake since food is always better eaten in house, however the burger itself was lacking. Lacking Flavor, Lacking toppings and Lacking on reputation. The small pocket of cheese was less than satisfying and there was no "Oozing" taking place with my burger, maybe the Pepper Jack isn't as oozy as the other choices. The 2 pickles for toppings were nothing special and the beef was kind of dry. I should have asked what came on it and added items. I guess you have to order the additional toppings to really make this a great burger, however I thought for around $10 a plate I would at least get some Onion, Lettuce or Tomato. Again, might have been a better experience dining in to get suggestions from the server. Definitely eat in if you go and order some additional toppings for the burger. I would come back to eat in the bar or something but until then I will make my way to the next Juicy Lucy joint in town and make my comparisons from there.

It is good and has a nice Juicy Lucy... It allows you to pick different cheeses which is fun. They have a full menu and nice onion strings. To be honest I was kind of meh on the place having already had the Jucy Lucy at Matt's which I though was better. Still, the 5-8 club isn't a bad burger joint.

I've lived in Minneapolis now for several years and actually have never had a Juicy Lucy. So, thought I'd go to the originator and give it a try. Not really sure what the hubbub is all about...even though the price is right (8.99 for a burger, fries, and slaw) I think you can get better burgers in the cities even if the cheese doesn't happen to be in the middle. If the Juicy Lucy is the Twin Cities food institution, we need to step up our game a little. On the plus side, the outdoor patio is really nice and great for groups. Our server was incredibly fast - "can I have another beer? Blam! There it was"

My family is probably going to disown me for writing this next sentence: I thought the Juicy Lucy at 5-8 was better than Matt's. Let me explain myself. 58 seems to use a little more cheese and if there's one thing I like on my brger, it's more cheese. Also, the one at the 58 was cooked a bit more rare. I don't like my burgers overcooked and I overlook that fact at matt's because I do like their Jucy's, but I definitely prefer the less cooked burger. What I didn't like about the 5-8 was their fries. Matt's fries blow theirs out of the water. Also, 5-8 is NOT the original home of the Jucy Lucy

We had a group of about 8 people and it was about 1pm. We wanted beer and cheese stuffed hamburgers. Since this is a free-for-all seating situation, every table that could accommodate 8 or more people obviously had three or fewer people sitting at it. Great. We stood around awkwardly and spun in circles until enough two tops left that we could push a couple together. The server was......I guess the word is efficient. No fluff here. Just order what you want and tell her quickly lest you anger her. We had deep fried pickles which they did rather well and most of us had Juicy Lucy burgers because why the heck else would we drive 30 minutes to a hole in the wall? I had mine with fried onions on it and it was everything that is good about a greasy cheeseburger. Was it mind-blowing? No. Was it delicious? Yes. I was given strict warnings by some of the folks with us that you should not dive right in once it arrives because the cheese will be face searing hot. This was an appropriate warning. Wait until you don't think you can wait any longer and then wait two more minutes. They also sell pull tabs in the corner of the bar. Pull tabs are always a good time. They're the clove cigarettes or swisher sweets of the gambling world. Just try one, everyone else is doing it. So, it was fun and good and I can check that off my Minnesota bucket list. Woot!

After a quick trip to the Ikea, we had to eat. We saw this on yelp and I quickly remembered seeing something about it on the Food Network, so we steered the car there and got our grub on. I have to say the food was good, not the best I have ever had, but good. The service was very friendly, I am really starting to like the native Minnesotans, they all seem so friendly and grounded. I ordered the Juicy Lucy which was prepared well, after seeing the pictures and reading about it, I was thinking it was going to be bigger. I was very tasty, but I left still wanting a little more. I guess that should be considered a good thing, but I am a man and I do have needs! The slaw was very good, I am not usually a fan of slaw, but I would eat theirs again. If you like a burger with melted cheese, you are going to love this place, if you are really hungry, try the burger challenge, you might just surprise yourself!

If you want a Jucy Lucy (and really, why else would you be considering the 5-8 Club?), I suggest hitting The Nook instead. Seriously. The Nook's Juicy Nookie is WAY better (I'm talking seriously life-changing) AND they have a better beer selection. And don't be afraid that it's in St. Paul; it's really not that far away.

So we moved into the neighborhood not too long ago and everyone kept saying that you have to try the 5-8 so of course we did and it didn't disappoint. The juicy Lucy's are delicious and the beer is very reasonable. We sat in the bar and the service was great oh and my wife won on pull tabs!! If you like burgers you have to check this place out. Overall a great place for some comfort food!!

Came here with the hubby because he wanted their speciality burger---for myself, I preferred chicken. Ordered their grilled chicken! Came out the buns dried---and I do understand that the buns were toasted, but it is hard as a rock! Chicken? Dried almost to the point of choking! Grossed out right now!

This places overall atmosphere and vibe is better than Matt's. The burger itself is good, but just lacks the flavor of Matt's. Better perks and selections as far as fries, onion rings, credit card accepted, welcomeness and waitresses are better looking. In summary, Matt's burger is better tasting but the atmosphere at 5-8 is a 10.

Bad, bad experience--the waitress did not know which beers were still on tap and recommended food that was just so-so. Even though she raved that people drive miles and miles to eat the 1/2 broasted chicken and Juicy Lucy. The burger was dry and seemed to be underweight (maybe 25% too small). The chicken and mashed potatoes were cafeteria quality, to say the least. Don't waste your time or money on this place--you will be disappointed and wish you had eaten KFC instead. At least then you wouldn't feel bad about spending the money on KFC! We felt ripped off, to say the least!!!

I was in the Twin Cities for the fourth time and I still hadn't had a Juicy Lucy there (I had had stuffed burgers in Nola). So when I got picked up at the airport, I told my local friend that I needed to go to a good spot for Juicy Lucys. He recalled going to this place with his brother and off we were. Thank goodness for GPS systems because we had to drive through not-so-well-lit neighborhood streets to get there. Once we were there, everything went smoothly. We must have beat the dinner crowd, because we were able to sit down right away. We each ordered a beer and a Juicy Lucy. I got the original with American cheese and my buddy J got one with Swiss. We both made ours baskets, me with onion rings and J with fries. The burger was good, but it was a little bit too dry, not doing justice to part of its name "juicy." Onion rings were delicious. And I was stuffed by the time I emptied my basket into my tummy. J, wiser than I, didn't have very many of his fries, but I think he enjoyed his burger. Our server kept checking in with us to make sure we had everything we needed. I think we each spent about $13 for a burger and a beer + tax and tip. Not bad. I kinda wish I could've gone to other places that serve the Juicy Lucy while in the Twin Cities so I can make a fair comparison, but it was a 48-hour trip and I didn't really want another burger. Next time...

I'm not certain why anyone would go here for anything other than the Jucy Lucy. There's so much to love about a cheese stuffed burger that I can't ever envision having anything else. I slapped a couple of onion rings on top of mine to give that little extra kick. If they'd of had fried pickles and fried cheese curds on the menu I'd have been in Midwest nirvana. As it was, I was pretty damned close. The bar/dining area inside smelled a little funky (old folks smell), but luckily it was nice outside and we ate on the deck. Our waitress was awesomely competent and you could tell she'd been there long enough to recite the menu backwards. If in Minneapolis, go there.

It's as usual, seat yourself service. The tables and chairs in the restaurant are placed so tightly together, it's difficult to walk through to get to the patio or to go to the restroom nearby. I didn't like all the squeezing between tables, people and chairs, it was claustrophobic. The patio area is more spacious with large picnic benches and no crowd problems. We tried the pizza jo's appetizers and pig pen wontons appetizers. The pizza jo's come in a huge basket and could be shared between 3 -4 people. It was very cheesy and tasty(but not very healthy!). The wontons were okay, pretty greasy, not too crunchy and was just okay. I had the rueben sandwich which was tasty but not my favorite kind of meat. I thought it would have pastrami, but it was some other kind of meat. The bread itself is toasted and greasy. You'd probably get a heart attack if you ate here everyday, but once in a while it's alright. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if you're starving and want some greasy food, this would be the place to be.

The 5-8 Club was our last stop to compare Juicy Lucy's and it did not disappoint. The hardest part for us was finding the place. Not from this part of the city, I found it to be a little challenging to find but it was worth it. The wait was about a half hour but they really keep things moving and you can tell the people working here are more than likely long time employees. We ordered the extreme jojos for an appetizer and they were delicious. JoJo's topped with cheese, chili, jalapenos, and served with sour cream. Whats not to like right? We gobbled those down and waited patiently for our Lucy's to arrive. Our Lucy's came and they were perfect. No pink for me and that's exactly what i got. The cheese was plentiful and oozed out nice and slow. My vote is in and I vote the 5-8 as the best Lucy for me. My daughter still has not given me her final vote yet; I think she is debating between 5-8 and Blue Door pub. I found the atmosphere to be casual and comfortable and service to be exceptionally good considering how many tables this girl had. We most definitely will be back.

The burgers are great and the prices are too, but each time I'm there the service seems to take another step down. I've worked in the service industry for 9 years so I understand that when it's busy things get hectic but there's been times where our server hasn't even offered up a quick "hello" as a greeting before asking for our order. Will continue to go back because of food quality and a location close to home.

Well I can definitely say the juicy Lucy is nothing special and the buffalo chicken is a pre frozen chicken patty with hot sauce poured on top so very flavorless. But the two stars are for decent service and good fries.

I was shocked that a vegan would be able to eat here. This is my brother's favorite burger place so he wanted to take my family. I was skeptical. They do, however, have a veggie burger on the menu. Our server was very nice and was happy to go check whether the patty was vegan or not. It was! it is a Cisco brand black bean patty. Not the greatest veggie burger in the world, but it was good. I had fried onions on my burger which was very good. The burgers do not come with any veggies though. I have never had a burger that did not come with lettuce, tomato, and onions standard. I missed them quite a bit. The fries were quite good too. They finished off my meal well. I'm sure my brother will take me back at some point. I will be less concerned next time since I know that vegans and vegetarians can eat something here. It won't be the best veggie burger you have had, but you will be able to eat.

First time in Minnesota, with everyone raving about this place and the Juicy Lucy, my expectations may have been artificially raised. To be fair, the prices were reasonable. I just wanted that said. My first order, a Pig Pen Lucy, came out just outside of warm. Couldn't even see or taste the bacon. When I ate half of it up, I became suspicious. Where was my meat candy? I blamed those things for the so-so taste of the burger. The waitress looked at it, brought it back to the cooks, who ripped apart the burger to "find" the bacon. I'm still not sure it was there. She did, however, tell me they were making a new one. First point of niceness. For that reason alone, two stars. Second one came out, looking nice and hot this time, when there was this scent... I smell BACON! Funny how I couldn't even smell it, let alone see it, the first time. With hopes raised, I bite into this Juicy Lucy, only to have those lofty dreams of burger bliss expertly dashed! There wasn't anything special, really. It wasn't juicy, barely even greasy. Two patties mushed together around Velveta (I'm guessing; I've never had cheddar THAT creamy...) and a little bit of bacon. A little seasoning would have been nice, maybe make it a three star rating, but no! There was only salt and pepper methinks. My second point of niceness, though? The fries were pretty tasty. Overall, it was okay for bar food. I'm trying Matt's on my way back home. Will keep you posted!

Great place for a burger. The Juicy Lucy is a staple. Just beware the wait can be long as it is seat-yourself, especially in the spring and summer.

I could not have been anymore disappointed in this place. As many people know, the rivalry over who has the best Jucy (Juicy) Lucy between the 5-8 Club and Matt's Bar has been very well publicized. But really, after eating here, I don't think it's even a contest with Matt's Bar. The Juicy Lucy and fries came out cold. Even the cheese inside the meat -which is supposed to scorch your mouth- didn't even ooze out. There's a significant difference between what is publicized and what is real. Oh, and then something crazy happened. A wet-spot in the ceiling caused a ceiling tile to break then fall onto some customers. At first, no one did anything, since everyone was shocked. It took about five minutes until 5-8 staff members came over to clean it up. I seriously question how clean this place is if water is leaking above.

One of the infamous juicy Lucy restaurants. This is a family friendly establishment with limited seating, but you can seat your self in the bar. Fairly typical bar fare. The burgers and fries are all well done. They also offer a number of variations on the juicy Lucy. Worth at least one trip to try the juicy Lucy!

Burger was a bit more than I expected, unless you like to have half the burger falling a part after two bites. Restaurant was ok....just not a fan of the traditional hamburgers cousin...Juicy Lucy....

Nice little sports bar. Big order or fries came with the burger, nice and crispy as they should be. We used a couple that was BOGO but even without the prices are decent. As for the Juicy Lucy.....I didn't care for it. I went with the classic American cheese and honestly found it to be really bland. I ate a couple bites and gave the rest to my husband. Definitely nothing to write home about.

Met up with my friends here before the Garth concert. I had never been here and did not even really know about this place so I was nicely surprised at what an old-school dive type bar/burger joint this was. I ordered the Bleu cheese stuffed burger and enjoyed the flavor---have I had better burgers? Of course (the nook is my fave!) It was much better than Matt's--so I will chime in on that debate---did not care for Matt's won't go back---would easily choose to go back to 5-8 may try some other options from the menu---my teeny tiny glass of wine was small--they serve it in a short juice glass---so perhaps stick with bottled or tap beer. Prices are moderate and it is a place for everybody old drunks and kids and families can coexist here.

Whenever I go to a new city, and there's time for a feed, I like to go to the places I viddy on the TeeVee. I'm ALL about sandwiches-Hot dogs, Beefs, Cheeseteaks, and in this case Burgers. The 5-8 is ostensibly the home of a Minneapolis delicacy called the Juicy Lucy. It's an outside-in Cheeseburger, meaning the cheese is stuffed INSIDE the patty, instead of on the top. Was it a big deal? No. Was it a fine Pub Burger? Yes. Nice surroundings, and good service. Revelatory? Not for a second. With my eyes closed, it could have been any decent cheeseburger. And don't get me wrong, it WAS a decent Cheeseburger. If you're in Mpls, eat here on the way to or from the Airport (it's right adjacent to it) just to say you've been there.

It's amazing how different two restaurants can be and still have the same name! You can not compare this place with the location in Champlin! We stopped here for dinner after a trip to MOA, needing a beer and food! Now with kids, at 6pm, shear suicide! To start we only waited for 5 or so minutes for a table, nice. We had the table cleared quickly and there was a beer in my hand within 5 minutes, OK all good! We put together our order and the food was out before any kids got crabby and the beer was refreshed. To close it out, the burgers were fantastic, everything was great and the bill was not at all over the top! This places rocks, I'll always be more of a Matts Bar guy but at the same time I so appreciate how great this place is, and how much the one in Champlin sucks! KT

I am a native Californian and always raise my eyebrows when someone tells me that I need to try so and so's burger joint. With In n' Out in California I am spoiled and usually don't like most burger places but wow the Juicy Lucy was a character of its own. I enjoyed the burger thoroughly and only wish they could have stuffed some jalapeños in the burger with the cheese to make it spicy. I also loved their fried cheese curds. I am a cheeseaholic so it was great getting some fresh fried cheese curds that beat mozzarella sticks hands down. Giving 4 out of 5 only because the beer selection was limited and not enough condiments to keep the burger spicy but other than that the place was awesome with its own vibe. Will def come here again next time I am in town.

5 of us decided to check out both the 5-8 Club and Matt's Bar in the same night to see who had the best juicy/jucy Lucy. Sorry 5-8 Club you were not the winner. We all agree that you sell cheese stuffed burgers, not a jucy Lucy. While I thought you had tastier fries and we all also enjoyed the PB&J stuffed burger, you didn't have much else to offer us and your original stuffed burger was not better than Matt's. No great dive bar ambiance either. Service was very fast.

As a recent Minneapolisian (Minneapolite?) I thought it only fair to try both Matts and the 5-8 club. We went to Matt's 1st, then the next weekend, the 5-8 Club. They cannot be more different. The 5-8 is more of a restaurant. A divey restaurant, but a restaurant all the same. We ordered Juicy Lucys and wings (the man was unimpressed with the Lucy, What???). The Lucy's were...good. But not the same deliciousness as Matts. The 2 that I took bites of (american and bleu cheese) were dry and kind of flavorless. I know my tastebuds are geared to a southern pallet but these were really flavorless. My husband's wings were equally dry and he left 1/2 of them uneaten, something that he never does. Our experience was edible but only just. The atmosphere was not my favorite. My recommendation,,,try the 5-8 club at least once...before you go to Matts. Then go to Matts and see how a Lucy is really supposed to be done.

I hunt burgers...I hunt them good and hard. I track down Man vs Food places and I decided to go after this burger cuz it was close to the hotel I was staying at and I wanted a fabled Jucy Lucy. Short story shorter...the first jucy lucy my special lady friend recieved was well(er) done and empty. An overcooked, unstuffed Jucy lucy that the waitstaff attempted to explain that the pepper jack cheese had cooked out of the burger...um...what? My burger was stuffed the same and cooked well done and it had stuffing. So you lose stars for the bullsh*t story on your lack of stuffing my lucy with jucy. On top of that the burgers were ok...but far from what I was hoping for. Eat up Minions!!

This is not the best Juicy Lucy that I've had, however, it is still AMAZING. If you'd like more options, than this is the place for you! There is a little bit of a wait usually, and the prices are a bit higher than Matt's (if you're comparing the two), but it's definitely worth the extra couple of dollars for the quality of the food.

We came here to try the famous Juicy Lucy Burgers. They were pretty good but not amazing. We expected the burger and cheese inside to be piping hot but it was room temp. The restaurant being super busy might of had something to do with the food temp. The restaurant itself is nothing special, very basic. Overall, whenever I'm in Minneapolis.... I will try the Juicy Lucy Burgers here again but will definitely check them out at Matt's Bar first for comparison.

Ok I must be spoiled from the Juicy Lucy's at the Buffalo Tap in Savage and the former Nook in Saint Paul. Because the Juicy Lucy I had here was bland. Incredibly bland. And not many options to doctor it up either. The fixins are pretty standard. Kinda disappointed to be honest

I hated this place. The workers here were so rude to all the customers, not just our table. The line extended out the door the night we came here for dinner although I can't imagine why anyone would be that desperate to come here to have to wait in a line that long for this place. Anyway, people had the door held open so that a few people could stand in the doorway too instead of being blocked out outside. This did not fly with the workers at 5-8 club; they were constantly YELLING, seriously yelling and not politely by any means, at their customers to shut the door because the air conditioning was on. Right upon walking in the place and looking around, you felt dirty and grimy. You apparently had to just seat yourself, first come first serve, which normally is totally fine, not a big deal, except when you don't know you have to seat yourself. Your standing first in line for no reason because a bunch of tables are open (though still uncleared and dirty), but you're expecting a worker to come tell you where you should sit. Not here, if you're lucky, you'll be one of the ones yelled at by the workers to "take the table over there that is obviously open and ready, dummy". Once someone has finished their meal and has left the restaurant, you have to play tug-of-war with other customers to claim the table--not fun. The food was gross, although I did not get their signature item--a cheese IN the burger burger. I wil never in a million years be coming to this place again. gross

I'm in Minneapolis and my customer recomended this hot spot near the airport. "It's big with the Locals.". And there truly was no better place to celebrate National Greasy Food Day. They are known for their Loosey Juicy or maybe it's Juicy Loosey. Apparently this is a local delicacy. I had the regular with American cheese, a side of onion rings and we shared among the 5 of us a serving of cheese curds. Let's start with the burger. We had a choice of cheeses to be stuffed into our burger. A Juicy Lucy is essentially a stuffed burger. I seriously considered the bleu cheese but everyone else was going American so so did I. And it was very good. The onion rings were traditional and yummy as well. And the cheese curds.... well this is a problem for me. For those of you who follow my posts, and the sheer quantity of you seriously freaks me out! Those of you who do, know that I am a proud Wisconsin native in a quest to find the best fried cheese curds in the Midwest. And, true to my heritage, the best old fashioneds as well. My problem is, twice in one week I have had very yummy cheese curds in two different states, neither of which were Wisconsin. My favorite were at a festival outside Chicago and these were my second favorite. Very very good and highly recomended. All and all this delivered in what promised. Very good burgers with fried sides and fast and friendly weekday lunch service. No frills but at $60 for all five us, what a deal.

My brother lives a few blocks away from here so I'd always been dying to try this place out. Wow! The burgers here... well I can't say anything that hasn't been said before. My girlfriend loved her burger as much as I did and we both like the huge onion rings. So handy having this great little place so close to the airport after I pick her up. Love it!

I went there this past Sunday with cravings for a JL at about 2:00PM. The place was pretty full but no lines. This was my first time there, after reading the menu and awards clearly posted on it, the warnings about letting the cheese cool down and of course the hearing about the well know reputation of the place for years, IT WAS A disappointment! The fries were cold, the burger was cold, my wife's food was cold too. The table behind me was complaining about their fries as well. Too bad! How hard is it to take food out to a table when its ready vs leaving it sit in the hot window? I refuse to give a good rating to a place that serves cold food, especially cold french fries. For a well known burger joint, this is unacceptable. The crime of all of this is I really wanted a good JL.

While on our trip to try the Juicy Lousie we had to hit the other contender on Man vs food and Food wars as well. Unlike Matts the 5/8 club has a large modern dinning room. Also the menu at the 5/8 has many more options then matts. The deep fried cheese curds here were out of this world. They were on par with the cheese curds I have had in wisconsin. The juicy Lousie was also good but not as juicy as the one at Matts. in my opnion matts wins the juicy lousie war hands down. All and all the food here is quite good and I would go back in a heartbeat.

I had a Swiss cheese version of the Juicy Lucy. Very tasty, however The cheese was not melted inside. I asked for the bun to be toasted, it was not. The burger was much rarer than I like my burgers. I got a side of onion rings and cole slaw, and they were both very tasty. The fried onions on the burger added good flavor. Arrived about 6 PM, the place was packed. I was by myself, and there was about a 10 minute wait.

I visit the Twin Cities every other year at Christmas and i like to try something new every time i go but trying to get my Peeps (In Laws) out of the house in winter is almost impossible until i mentioned trying a Juicy/Lucy that changed everything cold beer and a burger my father in law was all in i wanted to go to Matt's but i was told this place was better The place was standing room only the waitstaff at the 5-8 was friendly. I was surprised from the outside, you wouldn't think they could accommodate as many patrons as they do we were a party of 6 and we got a table PDQ. I expected to burn the roof of my mouth when I first bit into the Juicy Lucy based on everything I'd seen and read but this didn't happen. The burger was large and messy but I enjoyed it very much. I feel like I have to try Matt's before I can make an honest evaluation about the burgers as for the 5-8 Club Clean good food but the beer could have been colder you would think when its 12 degrees outside that wouldn't be a problem but what do i know I'm a Californian.

I blame the nations obesity level on the 5-8 Jucy Lucy. This concerns me because the deliciousness of this burger holds high ranks - which will blimp this blonde out! I have to vote of all the juicy lucy wars that go on, my heart holds the 5-8 Club Lucy the highest of all. (But keep in mind, I am not one that likes a lot of spice and kick so basic is better motto is what helps this burger win my heart.) I love how you can select the different types of cheese, but the whole experience is delicious. They have always turned out and have an amazing taste. The basket of fries is enough for sharing, but they are beyond delicious. I have been to the location in St Paul and on Cedar Ave, and both times the burgers have been great and awesome service.

About a year ago I went to Matt's with my ex-bf (we're still friends). This year we came to 5-8 for comparison. The atmosphere is more family friendly - a table with kids next to us so we tried (unsuccessfully) to watch our language. It's cleaner, bigger and generally not as dive-y. We ordered a pepper juicy lucy and a "regular" juicy lucy with american cheese. Both were good, the fries were good, the beer was good. No complaints here. Now that we've had both - I've only determined that I like juicy lucys :)

Last weekend I was in Minnesota to witness the blizzard (Dec. 2010) and all of its subsequent offerings. Before I left, I wanted to show the leading lady in my life Minnesota's famous 'Juicy Lucy', and where else to go but Matt's Bar. But we had very limited time, because of the buried transport vehicle and subsequent horrible road conditions, so we decided to try 5-8 Club's 'JL', which also claims to be the first. Well, if they claim that they are the first, they definitely shouldn't claim that they are the best. 5-8's 'JL' has options for the cheese, which Matt's Bar doesn't, but this feature doesn't make up for taste. Instantly as I took a bit I noticed that Matt's 'JL' was far superior than 5-8's. The meat isn't as juicy and the cheese flavor, really didn't have any flavor. Maybe the difference between the burgers is the fat/meat content, but whatever it is Matt's truly made an impression on me. After having both 'JL's' I really don't understand how this can even be a discussion, Matt's is the original, and the BEST!!

So I am a really bad MSP native. I've only had 3 Juicy Lucy's, at 3 different places. This was my least favorite though i am by no means an expert. I was looking forward to this one the most because it held the most cheese. But was disappointed. The seasoning on the burger was lacking and the burger itself was quite dry. The worst part? The cheese on the inside was no melty lava of flowing dairyness. It was melted together but barely. Kind of like when you get a hankering for a mozzerella stick and the cheese in the middle is melted but hard. No gooey cheese for me. Sad face. :( Honestly it seemed to me as though my burger had been made an hour or two earlier and reheated. We did come in about an hour after the lunch rush. The other two (Matt's and Tugg's) were both better. The service was a tad on the slow side as well.

I tried 8 different burgers when I was in town for the marathon and out of the 8, 3 were Juicy Lucy burgers. The other two were Matt's and Nooks. 5-8's was the best one. I ordered the Pig Pen--juicy and tasty! The burger wasn't covered in grease like Matt's and had plenty of cheese. The patty wasn't thin and bigger and actually cooked the way I want it -- medium. The onion straws are awesome. I wished they offer 1/2 orders because I don't really need a massive $7 basket of onion. I didn't have any problems with my server or with parking. I guess it really depends on what day/time you go there??? I went on a Friday around 2ish. I'll definitely come back and try a different Juicy Lucy burger!

I feel like I'm missing something and I need to give this place another shot. Both times we had to wait for a table and the place was packed. The waitstaff seemed very busy (although very nice and accommodating) and I think this may have affected the end result. End Result: the burger wasn't very hot, the cheese wasn't completely melty and oozy. Fries were coldish too. The beer was pretty good. I'll try it again when it isn't so busy (is it always busy?) although I may just keep driving north the extra couple miles to Matt's.

Horrible service and food was fair at best. When we arrived there was a sign to seat yourself. We waited for a table to open and when it did we went over and waited over 10 minutes for anyone to come and clean it off. When she did come the cloth she used to clean the table was dirtier than the table. It was gross. We got out disinfecting wipes out of our own purse just to feel safe to eat. This place needs a health inspection. Then finally our order was taken. The food was OK. Not great just OK. Then the wait began for the bill to be brought. Then when she did bring the bill all three of us had our money and credit cards out and without saying a word she just picked up my friends credit card and charged all three lunches on his card. We were stunned. Horrible service would never go back. The only reason they have customers still has to be because they were on the travel channel and tourist go when they come to town.

I still have not yet decided on where the original Jucy Lucy came from, however, I have no problem eating one at the 5-8 club. A few years back, they didn't have nearly as many choices as to what types of Jucy Lucy's, but now it seems you can put anything inside (even pizza). That being said, I feel that has almost spoiled what the Jucy Lucy actually is. I am giving this place 4 stars, not just because I love burgers and fries, but because they still have the original Jucy Lucy on the menu and it is well worth it to try. Tips: no call ahead or reservations (that I'm aware of) and it is pretty well packed every night, so plan on waiting a few minutes to get yourself a table, but trust me, it's worth the wait. I have yet to venture to try anything besides the Jucy Lucy and fries, but then again, why should I?

Here's the breakdown: 1) 5-8's American cheese Lucy has more cheese than Matt's, which results in a very ooey gooey center. This is in contrast to the molten liquified center you'll find in Matt's Lucys. Is one better than the other? Depends on what you like - I like cheese at any degree of melted, so this category is a draw for me. 2) With that said, avoid the blue cheese Lucy - you'll be hard pressed to find any inside the patty, or at least that was the case for JP. Did it just disintegrate or dissolve into the meat? Or was there too little to begin with? I see other reviewers have experienced the same - apparently this was not an isolated incident. 3) At the 5-8 you can get JoJo potatoes that are just lightly seasoned and crispy on the outside. Super spuds!! 4) I wish there was a better way of dealing with seating. We had to wait maybe 5-10 minutes for a seat, no biggie, but we were stuck staring at the folks sitting 3 feet away while they ate. Awkwardness. 5) They have patio seating in the summer, so it does alleviate some of the wait time if you're willing to brave the heat outside. In summary, stick to the classic American cheese Lucy and you'll be happy, just be prepared to wait and watch others eat while you drool in anticipation.

After a Couple Check ins here for a Meeting for a beer I finally got a Juicy Lucy ,it was not as I thought it would be hardly any cheese and a bit more greasy than I like a burger ,I have been to other places that make Juicy Lucy Burgers and don't claim a fame to them that Blow this place Away! I'm"m just happy I didn't make a Special Trip for it ! It was a bit busy but not so busy that it should take 10 minuets to get change our server was as slow as could be she looked like she had been there since day 1 but also like she had no clue! Try Jerseys for a Real Good Jucy!

The 5-8 Club is my favorite place in the entire State of Minnesota to get a hamburger, that is why I gave them 5 stars. Everything about thier burgers is great, the buns are bakery fresh, the beef is flavorful, and they really know how to cook with onions, the fried onions are like nothing I've ever tasted before. The prices here are very affordable, and this place can be family friendly if you get there at the right time. There is a bar free room right when you come in the door that has tables and booths. If it's full, which it can be at times and you don't wan't to sit in the bar room they always take to - go orders. Lake Nokomis and it's parklands aren't too far away, so you can go pickniking with your 5 - 8 burgers if you need too.

We made the drive for the 5-8 Club while staying in downtown Minneapolis for vacation. After hearing all about the Juicy Lucy's we had to try one from each of the "original" establishments. I have to say this one was just alright for me. Getting there was a challenge in itself. Following Google maps on the iPhone, the place is right next to a freeway entrance/exit so we couldn't tell wether to go straight or turn. Needless to say, we were back on the freeway, passing the 5-8 club, and had to get off at the next exit to try again. And then the "front" door you see from the freeway, is not a door at all, so strike two on our attempt to get into the place. After walking to the other side of the building, we found the door. Finally we made it! We started out with some cheese curds, which were yummy. And even though I wanted to try one of the fabulous sounding Lucy creations, I decided in order to be fair, I had to get the classic. Don't get me wrong, the Lucy was good, it was just a little too much cheese for me. (Wait, did I really just say that? Yes, yes, I did, and I'm sticking to it.) I have heard that 5-8 uses FOUR slices of cheese in their Lucy. Now, while that is all just hearsay, and I have not confirmed with anyone at 5-8, that does seem like an awful lot of cheese for just one burger. I'll still go back next time I'm in town, but I will probably try a different kind of Lucy next time and get my classic at the other place.

The waitress was friendly but did everything very slow. It took us nearly fifteen minutes to get our order in, and then another ten minutes for our drinks after that, and then another thirty minutes for the burgers and fries to come out. Normally I'm a pretty patient person because I understand restaurants can get a little busy, but the place wasn't busy at all. The burgers were a disappointment. I thought it didn't match up to Matt's Bar's jucy lucy's at all.

Love me some Juicy Lucy. We went on a Sunday night and it was packed! And rightfully so. They have added five new Lucy's to the menu. I got the Juicy Luigi, stuffed with mozarella and pepperoni, and served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. Oh this burger really was amazing. Jordan got the Mexican one-- which is super spicy! It's filled with pico de gallo, pepper jack cheese, and jalapenos. Hello fire-breathing. The three others are a Minnesota one- filled with swiss cheese and wild rice, the Pig Pen- with bacon cheddar cheese in the middle and topped with more bacon, and the Olive one- filled with cream cheese, garlic and green olives. We also started with the wings with big poppa's sauce and spilt a side of Jo JOs (note-- the Juicy Lucy's do NOT come with fries! Make sure you get something on the side)

My first Juicy Lucy experience. It was good. Didn't taste all that different from a regular cheeseburger, but it was good. Service was fast and friendly. I'll come back again.

Isn't the whole idea of a Juicy Lucy that's there's cheese in the middle of the burger? Well the 5-8 club now bring you the cheese-less Juicy Lucy. We found a seat in the outside deck area and ordered the food. I ordered the blue cheese with jo-jos while the rest ordered the normal American cheese version. The burger arrived and I bit in and tested nothing. I looked inside the burger and it was a cavern of nothingness where the cheese should have been. There was a slight coating of cheese in there but nothing like the other burgers my coworkers had. I suspect either the burger had exploded during cooking or the chef decided there was a blue cheese shortage and decided only to use a crumb of cheese. The wait staff seemed overwhelmed and frazzled. The waitress forgot to bring parts of the order and despite saying she was coming back with them she didn't return until it was time to pay. The other burgers looked ok so maybe it's a blue cheese issue. Finally the Jo-Jos were tasty so it wasn't all bad news.

Good "sports" type bar but I am not sure the proprietor would like that characterization. It is a really good neighborhood bar/eatery. Super nice staff and very attentive. Great proximity to airport and highway's. Burgers are really good and a large selection but sorry, as for the best Lucy in town, head North on Cedar.

The service is always slow and rude. The Juicy Lucy's are almost always undercooked. The fries have changes and now inedible. Do not bother going here as this place has been going down for the past few years and continues to get worse. How can you serve and undercooked and cold Juicy Lucy??? They also will deep fry your burger if it is undercooked the first time you get it instead of making you a new one. We have gotten sick from eating the food here. I wish they were better.

Went here with my wife and a friend yesterday for the first time. Normally I go to the Nook or Shamrocks if I need a Juicy Lucy, but we thought it was about time we went to the 5-8 and we made an excellent choice. I went with a simple Juicy Lucy with Swiss cheese and it was a damn good burger. Only issue I had with it was that it wasn't the molten cheese effect you would normally find in a Juicy. All in all a good burger at a great price and the atmosphere inside is very casual so I felt right at home. By the way, order the wings with the Poppa's Secret Sauce. You won't regret it.

The infamous juicy lucy...the hamburger with cheese infused INSIDE the patty. It tasted like a cheeseburger. For some reason I thought it would be like a meat Twinkie, with cheese oozing right out of the patty. Someone postulated that you had to get American cheese in your juicy lucy to get that effect (I chose pepper cheese). Ah well. next time im in town.

SO FREAKING GOOD. Had the Taco Lucy, Pickle Chips, Cheese Curds, and a Beer. Food was great. The cheese curds here are better than the ones at the State Fair!

I came to the 5-8 Club for one thing and one thing only, the Juicy Lucy. A must-have when in Minneapolis according to every website and Man vs. Food. We arrived around 11am on Labor Day and seated ourselves at an empty table. We were in and out in an hour. Our waitress was friendly and appropriately attentive. The burger itself was a good basic, juicy, cheese-y, burger. If you want lettuce, tomato, and/or onion you need to ask for it. Otherwise you get a burger and bun and fries. Be careful when you bite! The oozing cheese is hot!

New to the area and had a chance to drop in on a local favorite. Was impressed by the wings! Super yummy. Juicy Lucy was excellent. Service was quick and restaurant super efficient in the kitchen. I love that you get to seat yourself so NO wait upon arrival, but as I was there got a chance to see it fill up and watch tables turn over quickly. I will definitely be back as I heard the table next to me loving on a grilled cheese.

Close to the airport but you'd do better traveling another 3 blocks down the road to the Jucy Lucy originator (cash only) I had passed the 5-8 Club many times and thought the icy rainy roads were the best excuse I'd find to finally try them. Well, that burger came out pretty quick....too quick. It was like it was under some heat source that ended up boiling the burger if that makes sense? Pretty bland tasting at that point. Lot's of bar food items on the menu so you have choices. The other Jucy Lucy place down the road just has burgers and fries. That's all you really want isn't it? They do accept credit cards.

What a hoot. We had some time to kill after arriving in Minneapolis before we had to head back to the airport to pick up another batch of visitors, so we spent the evening here over Juicy Lucys. I liked that you could order carrot sticks instead of fries (even though let's face it, I really wanted the fries). The burger was good -- not the best I've ever had but certainly memorable and tasty with a tall beer. The beer list is small but curated, and not too full of itself, either. I kind of wanted to eat my way through the entire menu (some creative options on here for a burger dive), but of course I neither live close enough to accomplish this, nor do I want to weigh 400 pounds (even with those carrot sticks...). The people-watching was pretty fun as well. My favorite part of the visit was reading the history about the building and the business. Used to be a speak-easy!

After being in Minneapolis for a few months, I was finally able to try the famous Juicy Lucy I've heard so much about. Unfortunately, it was built up a bit for me and I was disappointed. The idea of a cheese-filled burger is solid and the burger itself wasn't bad, it just wasn't amazing and certainly not worth the hype. The meat had a strange cook-top smell/taste to it - definitely should have been charbroiled or grilled rather than cooked on a flat top like this was McDonald's. The fries were really good, though, and the prices were moderate. The interior hasn't been updated in decades and had a distinct dive bar feel to it. Probably should have gone to Matt's instead for my first JL experience.

Ok so I couldn't come to the Twin Cities and not try the famed Juicy Lucy. My friend ordered the one with cheddar and bacon, another with just cheddar and I ordered mine with swiss. The menu warned that you should let the burger cool off as the cheese can burn your tongue but it wasn't that hot. After a few bites of my burger, I determined that the juicy lucy was pretty darn good but that I prefer Shake Shack's burgers and comparably the shroom burger which is a mushroom burger with cheese injected inside. A bite of my friend's burgers and I determined that the one with bacon is always better. Yum. I wish I had time to try Matt's version.

Step aside Lucy - Because the new dog in town is Sally...Saucy Sally that is. Jucy Lucy's are good n' all...especially the bleu cheese one...but my recent visit here led me straight to the Saucy Sally which is...basically... gods gift to the American man, women, and child alike. It's like a mashup of a Jucy Lucy and a Big Mac! Special sauce on the inside of a half pound burger topped with cheese and thousand island dressing and fixin's. This thing is so damn good...I actually slowed down while eating it to savor all of the goodness that was oozing out! Now...I honestly don't love Jucy Lucy's as I tend to find a typical Cheeseburger to be more satisfying for some reason...but this damn Saucy Sally is somethin else. Juicy Lucy = Good Saucy Sally = Mo Betta! Word to the wise...the regular fries are not great. Either order the Onion Rings which are amazing, or order the Jojos..wait for it..."crispy"!

As an impartial appraiser, having tried 5-8 and Matt's bar. There can only be one juicy Lucy. Although 5-8 offers a variety of takes on the burger, Matt's bar comes out on top. GO THERE FOR A JUICY LUCY!

While visiting the mall of America during our summer vacation, I got into a conversation with a clerk at the mall, and she asked if I had ever had a juicy Lucy. What the heck is that I thought. She said her mouth was watering just telling me about it and gave me the address to this place. Minnesota nice for sure! Since it was only 10 minutes from the mall I convinced hubby we should check it out. It isn't the easiest place to find, but lucky for us our GPS led us there. We didn't have to wait long which was a good thing, since no reservations and you walk in and wait for something to open up. It is basically a bar atmosphere, relaxed and casual. Hubby ordered the juicy Lucy, which appears to be a burger with the cheese melted in the middle. I ordered the GCB which is a garlic cheeseburger. With an order of fries we decided to split the burgers. The burgers didn't take much time to arrive, and it says you should allow to cool for a minute before eating it. The cheese inside was hot for sure, and the burger was juicy and not dry. The juicy Lucy was good, but I guess not being from the area we didn't understand what the big deal was. I actually liked the garlic cheeseburger better. Hubby was undecided between the two but agreed with me that he doesn't get it. It was possibly our cheapest meal while we were away, but nothing I would go out of the way for! Sorry folks, we just don't get it.....

Once upon a time, this place had decent burgers at a decent price. NOT ANY MORE ! There are way too many places better than this. Why would you pay $9 + for a mediocre burger basket like A&W ? Atmosphere ? Nope ! Nada ! Beer and wine selection ? NOPE!, Nada ! Don't bother !

5-8 Club has to be the reason why Minnesota is one of the top state to live in. Best 6 dollars, I've ever spent on a hamburger. Why? The answer is quite simple, they give you a half pound patty stuffed with all the things that make you stomach worship you. Gluttony, might be sin, and I would risk purgatory for these hamburgers any day. Out of the five days I spent in Minnesota, 2 of them were at 5-8 club, standing in line, while it was raining, hoping to get a seat in this homey restaurant, so I can get my hands on these succulent burgers. A must try, if you ever come to Minnesota. Must Haves: 1. SENORITA LUCITA: half pound patty, chipotle sauce, jack cheese, chipotle pepper, and pico de gallo 2. JUICY LUIGI: half pound patty, mozzarella cheese, marinara 3. PHILLY CHEESE STEAK: was delicious

All the raves about the famous "juicy Lucy" burgers had me touring Minneapolis for a bite...it was a Thursday evening after work and i drove down to 5-8 to meet up a few folks since we all wanted to experience the juicy Lucy hype. 5-8 is located in a very hidden location, right inside a neighborhood and it doesn't look anything like a restaurant from the outside. more like an tavern where you'd find dead beats wasting away at the bar corner... .To my surprise however, the restaurant was extremely packed. there was a line by the door and it was self seating. you can smell the grease of burgers as you open the door. I wasn't quite prepared so i was overwhelmed with the menu. nothing like Matt's bar- 5-8 had a full on menu that hosted other types of food if you weren't into burgers.... I ordered the string onion rings, cheese curds, ice tea and the original juicy Lucy with the choice of American cheese. I didn't know you can pick your own cheese! how cool...right!? The prices were very decent.... after waiting around which seemed like forever, my food came.. keep in mind i am sharing the onion strings and cheese curds with others.. I'm not that big of a PIG! the burger... 0-kay, though i think it could have been better. it was a little well done. i like my burgers m-rare. but the onion rings were GINORMOUS! the cheese curds were nothing special... but the lady was nice to apologize for the wait... I'd go again, but will request for the meat to be cooked medium rare.

On our vacation to Minneapolis, we knew that we wanted to try a Juicy Lucy. We got there about 2pm but it was still pretty busy! But we grabbed a seat on their covered patio, which was nice considering there was a ton of cotton floating around. I opted for a Saucy Sally while my fiance had the Juicy Lucy with American. I loved my burger, I liken it to a much better Big Mac, since it has the Thousand Island dressing on it. I had a bite of the Juicy Lucy as well, but I preferred mine because it had more flavor!

As they say, "when in Rome", and when in Minneapolis, we had to get Saucy Sally's. Our hosts brought us here for lunch when we arrived, and I had a Saucy Sally while my bf had the Juicy Lucy with blue cheese. We added fries and got to work. Technically speaking, it's nothing groundbreaking, a burger with cheese inside, but it was delicious. The service was good and while I can't say I even looked at anything else on the menu, I'd definitely be back for another burger.

After going to their competitor several times, I had to try the 5-8 Club to see how it stacked up. Especially after glowing reviews by that world reknown glutton, Alan Richman (Man vs Food). Went to th 5-8 on a Monday night. The place was full but there were no lines. I was able to find an empty seat at the bar. Now they all this a tavern and grill, there is a small bar in place with about six seats. The primary attraction is the food. There are dozens of tables and booths. Lots of kids in the place so it is family friendly. Although it was founded in 1928, I found the place clean and in good condition. Several TV screens around the place but this is definitely not a sports bar. The food itself. This place claims to be one of the founders of the Juicy Lucy. Thats what I ordered along with fries and coleslaw. I had a cold beer to go with it. Now fries were pretty good, fresh cut and done just right. Served up hot. Cole slaw wasn't bad but you can tell it had been sitting around for a while. The star of the show, the Juicy Lucy came up flat. The burger itself was big enough, but it was charred on the outside, the meat itself was dry and the american cheese was just there, it added little to the burger. It wasn't bad but there was no "wow factor". Waitress were nice, decor was OK, but the burger? The two star rating captures my feelins accurately; "Meh. I've experienced better". Sorry guys.

  • Mike G.

Not as good as Matt's Bar. Still good but not even close. The reason is because, even though 5-8 has "more cheese", they don't cook it enough that the cheese is just gooey rather than molten cheese lava like at Matt's. And Matt's flavor is so much better.

    (3)
  • Chris Y.

Awesome place to get a great Juicy Lucy cheeseburger. Only four stars, but I'd choose this over my 5-star-rated Matt's Bar. Why? Ambiance, cleanliness, convenience, are all better here than at Matt's. Not the burgers, though. Compared to Matt's Bar, these Juicy Lucys are just not as hot and juicy, and seem too well-done. They are a lot bigger, and they get bonus points for more variety in burgers. Directly compared, Matt's is tastier, but as a restaurant, I'd rather eat at the 5-8 Club.

Being from California, I'd heard of the Juicy Lucy and had to give it a try when I was in Minneapolis. The Juicy Lucy, in case you're wondering, is a burger where the patty is stuffed with cheese as opposed to the cheese laying on top. Yum! It's sort of hidden in a neighborhood-y area, and frankly, I was looking for Matt's Bar (by foot) and ran across 5-8 Club on accident when I was on the wrong path. Very nice servers. Quick, too. I ordered with the addition of grilled onions. It comes with fries. If you order the Juicy Lucy, you have the choice of what type of cheese you would like to have in the center. I went with American, because that just says good ol' fashioned cheeseburger to me. :) I'm sure it would be great with any cheese! I'd try blue next time. First bite, and it was heavenly! The cheese is super hot as it comes oozing out when you bite into the burger, but oh so good. The bun was great, too. Fries! Tasty! It also comes with a tiny cup of cole slaw. Just your classic cole slaw - slightly sweet but not too watery. Very good. I'd definitely come here again. For less than $9, you get a big cheeseburger, fries, cole slaw, and it all comes out very quickly. It's not a gourmet burger by any means, but it's a thick patty and it does the word "cheeseburger", justice.

To be fair, I'd probably have enjoyed 5-8 much more had it not been for the whole rivalry with Matt's. Frankly, if you're comparing the Ju(i)cy Lucy's at both establishments... there's really no comparison. Matt's has those amazing tiny caramelized onions; at 5-8 you get a large, slimy piece of sweated onion. The crispy brown bits from all the Maillard reaction action that happens at Matt's... it's just not existent here. So let's remove the rivalry from the equation. When you do that, 5-8 is not bad. It's a cool little pub, with an interesting history, a decent amount of seating, a varied menu, and the food is not too shabby. It's true that the service is a little slow, and perhaps they could hire a few more servers to handle the consistently full house of customers. But I wouldn't be opposed to coming back to try a Saucy Sally, or a Big Jim... it's just not the go-to place for a Jucy Lucy, in my opinion.

I have to say, I saw this place on the Food Network. When I was there for work, there's no way that I wasn't going to try a Juicy Lucy. I have to say, I was impressed and almost ordered a second one. Now, the place is SMALL...so if you want to get right in, get there early or hope that there's a seat to sit down. We were lucky and found a two top in the bar area. So we sat right down. The service was very good...and she was very helpful for a new person to the Jucy Lucy. Got it with grilled onions...and I would say do the same. If I'm back in the area....I'm going back for another one.

For burgers, this place can hang with the best of them,....my first time having a Juicy Lucy,...it was good. (saw it on Man vs Food, and Food Wars and had to make a stop) Living in California makes it difficult to visit, but when in town count on stopping by.

Had our first outing at the 5 8 Club last weekend with some friends. Had to wait for about 20 minutes for a table (9:00 on a Saturday night) but well worth the wait. My son had the Juicy Lucy and loved it. I had the Saucy Sally and loved it although just a bit too much 1000 island for me but still delish. My wife had the turkey burger and was not impressed. The patty was real small and thin and had little to no taste. She claims she was trying to "be good" and ordering on the healthy side, just goes to show you it doesn't always work. Highly recommend the 5 8 club. Great service and great burgers.

Not sure if this is the original home of the juicy Lucy, but they do a great job. Casual joint with personable staff. Food was quick and hot. Wel'll be back when we're in town again. Props to Man vs. Food for showcasing the joint on their show. This place is a gem off the expressway.

I love their burgers ( but I have not tried anyone else yet). I usually opt for a saucy sally or a juicy Lucy with Swiss. Their prices are a good value. Burgers are big and fries are plentiful; enough to share if you are a light eater. - parking sucks - no where to stand and wait when it is busy - people leave, but tables don't get cleaned right away..even longer wait I have been here quite a few times and 2 out of 3 times service is disappointing. They are ridiculously slow! I have witnessed on a few occasions other tables get their food ordered before me, when I have already been here a good few minutes before them. They obviously are not worried about first come first served and making customers happy. Also, it seems after you have gotten your food you no longer matter, I find myself waving down my server so I can get a refill or even my bill. 5-8 club is exactly what the 3 star rating says " A- OK"

Went to Matt's bar and 5-8 club the same week. Overall we chose 5-8 club. Very different from Matt's Bar which is a DIVE, no other way to describe it. I am over going to dives, especailly with my kids. 5-8 club is totally family friendly and you have more then 4 options to eat. They have a full menu and juicy lucy club. The burgers are at least twice the size of Matt's and you can choose different cheeses. Having said that, those of us that got Bleu and pepperjack, agree that the juicy lucy should really only be eaten with American cheese. The taste is just not the same. We were stuffed where as we left hungry from Matt's Bar. We also got the Chili Cheese jo-jo's (potato wedges for us southerners) and they were fine, nothing to write home about. The onion rings and coleslaw were also good. I enjoyed the griddle taste of Matt's but the size of the burgers and the cleanliness and family friendliness of the 5-8 club pushed us over. Plus they have a parking lot instead of street parking. Our waitress was very sweet. They DO take credit cards which was helpful since I rarely have cash and you can get ice in your drink! Can't do either of those at Matt's.

I'm sorry to say this because some may take this the wrong way but "Forget the Juicy Lucy, the Saucy Sally is where it's at!" It's known as Lucy's little sister. Saucy Sally has all the goods on it that Juicy Lucy is missing. Onions, lettuce, pickles, cheese and Thousand Island. Not sure about the special sauce that is in the middle. Kind of hard to distinguish it with the slather of TI and cheese, my best guess is that it also had cheese in the middle. It was the BEST Big Mac ever! Can't comment on the restaurant cause I got the burger to go, but anyplace that creates something as delectable as the Saucy Sally is wonderful in my book. Good prices and tons of great burgers - No wonder 5-8 lasted a lifetime.

Walked in at 5:30pm a Saturday & there was a wait so I put our name on the list. I then asked if there was room at the bar. The hostess said she would look, but if there was seating she'd have to offer the seats to everyone else waiting. Of course the 20 people choosing to stand there were going to take advantage of my idea. Bar seating at every other restaurant is first come, first serve. Disappointed to say the least.

Since I haven't found a review that doesn't talk Juicy Lucy, I'm going to talk a bit about their other food selections. I live in the area, and I go there often, so I've had a chance to mix it up. They have the best classic cheese curds in the city. Hands down: they're state fair quality (and if you've been to the MN state fair, you know how good that is). Served with some delicious marinara. I don't think I've had better sauce served with curds! Try their onion straws. They are so good I can't even describe them. Onion straws are a rarity for me, since I usually go with my husband - the serving is way too big for just two people! The fries come out hot without a ton of salt: I don't like a ton of salt on my food, so it's nice to be able to put that on myself. They have a few variations on the Juicy Lucy, so the complaints that it's "too plain" irk me a bit. If you want something more, get something more. It's not like they don't offer it. My husbands favorite non-Lucy is the Pig-Pen: it's basically a Juicy Lucy in bacon cheeseburger style. Delicious. They had the Juicy Luigi for a while, and I have to say that was my favorite, but they mix up their variations, so it is discontinued for the moment. The servers are great: some of the friendliest people I've ever met, and they'll always treat you well. It can get bogged down, but I like the hands-off approach. It lends to the relaxed atmosphere, and the other patrons are generally courteous. I would suggest going at an off time: late dinner or lunch if you don't want to wait so long.

I came here on a pilgrimage, high on the ideal of a burger blasting cheese in my face like a waterfall from heaven. The reality was a bit less angelic. My family lives literally blocks from here. When I visited in the summers as a little kid, I never even knew about the Juicy Lucy phenomenon. I was greeted by a well-kept restaurant, which was as clean as I've ever seen. But it all went downhill with the food. I got the classic Juicy Lucy, which tasted just like two patties with cheese in between. The bun was dime-store bland, and the onion rings were clearly the Costco special. I couldn't believe it! No one in my group enjoyed their meal that much, and I do not believe it had anything to do with high expectations. I hate to say this about a neighborhood place, but I recommend not going if you can help it.

I was recently introduced to the beauty that is a Jucy(Juicy) Lucy and was excited to try 5-8 Club's version. Let me just be blunt in saying that I was left thinking "not worth the wait in line". We ordered the fried mushrooms to start and I will say their crunchy, crisp coating left me anticipating the main event. Sadly, two bites into the "Classic Juicy Lucy", I was left longing for Matt's. The beef itself was not seasoned well and frankly had kind of an off flavor overall to me. I did not get the beautiful gush of cheese that I pretty much live for out of the middle. The fries were also lackluster and in need of a dusting of salt. I really thought there could be no such thing as a bad Lucy...but I was wrong. Team Matt's!

This place is amazing! My BF and I were in MN for a twins game, and to check out the local food. We had gone to Matt's first, and after that burger I didn't think I would ever try a Juicy Lucy again. So glad I did! This is defiantly the better of the two. There is more cheese, a better meat flavor to the burger, the place is still crowded but much bigger, and the service is outstanding! We went on a busy Saturday afternoon, which was probably why it was so busy. We were able to find a table quickly (being nice to people really pays off). They were slammed, but you would have never guessed that from the awesome waitress we had. The price was perfect, soda was cold, and seating was comfortable... much better than Matt's! The only thing I'd change next time is to get the onion rings instead of fries. Can't wait to go back!

I really really liked the Juicy Lucy. I was hesitant to get it because I can't eat beef a lot, but it was so worth it! I wasn't a huge fan of the fries or the fried pickles, but I ate the entire burger. It was friggin delightful.

I went to the 5-8 Club shortly after moving to the Twin Cities because it was showcased on Man Vs. Food, for claiming to have invented the juicy lucy. It was pretty decent, but nothing that I'd write home about. Their burgers were good, but not nearly as good as other in the area. The atmosphere was probably what saved it from being 2 stars, It's a nice place to just sit and talk, there's plenty of seating, and it's not too rowdy like some places. The waiting staff is fine, and the food is decent.

I visited their location in Maplewood - it took a second to figure out that we seat ourselves, and service was friendly but slow. I had the Juicy Lucy - basically, it tasted like any other cheeseburger. Their fried sides (fried cheese curds, fried mushrooms, french fries) were good, but it's hard not to like fried anything. The food's cheap, pretty good, and great for casual groups. In the middle of winter, it was still crowded on a Saturday night. Parking was easy, as they have a big lot. Very close to 3M, and I'm guessing it's a popular lunch place. They have a TV in the main dining room corner in case you get tired of your dining companions, and there's also a separate bar area with seating.

My first Minni "must do" (as far as cuisine is concerned) has been to try a Juicy Lucy at the 5-8 Club, served with a side of onion rings. Doesn't get a full 5-star rating because I wasn't moaning in ecstasy at my table at the burger. It was good, don't get me wrong, and I'll go back for another once in a while, but it wasn't amazing. The onion rings are another story - they are DELICIOUS and not overly breaded but served just right. We had no issues at all with our service. Came in during the lunch rush, got a table in the bar, and was seen by our pleasant waitress within moments. I was intrigued by the rest of the items on the menu, especially their creative burgers, so I will be making the trip back out to the 5-8 most definitely in the future!

Juicy Lucy was good, big deal. Like I said, the juicy lucy was good, certainly does not live up too all the attention the place receives. (I think that about Matt's too). On a recent lunch visit I had the juicy lucy with fries. It was very busy, we waited about fifteen minutes for seats. Not really a big deal, accept there is no one seating customers. So while we were waiting, a couple of douche bags walked ahead of people and sat down. (you know who you are). Service was decent considering how busy it was. I could not do that job as well as our server. Again, the burger was good. But everyone needs to calm down. It's not the greatest thing ever. If I want a burger with cheese cooked in it, I'll go to the Blue Door.

First place my man took me upon my landing in the puddle state was 5-8 Club (at my request). I'm a huge cheeseburger lover and really wanted to go after seeing the place feature on Man vs. Food . Shared an American cheese-filled Juicy Lucy with fries. Slices of pickle were sandwiched between the 1/2 pound patty and bun. Overall thoughts... good! Tasted like a burger that one might have at a friend's BBQ. Satisfying but not phenomenal. Perhaps my expectations were too high? We also ordered wings while there. YUM! The wings here are even better than their burgers. Good times..........

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Oh wait -- yes I can. It's because this place is so mediocre that I forget about it even though I drive past it twice a day five times a week. The parking sucks, the service is spotty, the seating maddening, and the Juicy Lucy is vile. I can't speak for the nonstandard cheese options, but the original tastes like barely warmed-over Velveeta. Viva Matt's!

Big fan of Juicy Lucy's! Experience: There's always a line and the seating concept is weird. It's first come first serve and it's based on honesty, as in people don't cut the line. This concept could only work in the Midwest. The staff is friendly and do a good job turning around tables so the line does move fast. Food: The food is amazing. The burger and cheesy middle just melts in your mouth. The burgers aren't too big, but with a side order of fries it's enough. The prices are also great. Overall: Definitely a place to hit up. After all it was featured on the Food Network.

If you want to try a Juicy Lucy, you have to come here, it's not really optional. Since I don't eat red meat, I have to go off of what the rest of my party said. Overall, the basic Juicy Lucy was okay - nothing stellar, but overall, it rated okay. My family did like the idea of the 5 burger challenge (5 different versions of the Juicy Lucy), so maybe we will give that a try sometime. If you're a vegetarian, you can get any of the burgers (other than the Juicy Lucy) with a Garden Burger, which is disappointing, but, after all, it is famous for it's beef burgers. Getting there is a challenge and the parking stinks, so carpool and be prepared to drive around a few times.

I used to live in the Powderhorn Park area and frequently visited this establishment. I have a couple of minor issues with this place but overlook them because of the food. The service is insanely slow. I mean REAL slow. It takes about 10-15 minutes to order and another 20-30 minutes for the food to arrive. This is including peak and non-peak hours. The place never seems clean either. The tables always seem sticky as do the ketchup bottles and other condiments presented at the table. However, the food is fantastic. I like dive's ALOT and this one is pretty awesome. My friend always orders the Big Jim and raves at how incredible of a burger it is. It looks big and always seems to be cooked well. I ALWAYS get the Extreme Jo Jo's. This is a meal in itself. Very tasty, meaty, and really hits the spot. I have also ordered the onion rings which are always extremely tasty. I know it's not rocket science to make onion rings (un-bag and deep fry) but they are always tasty which tells me they change out the oil in the frier on a regular and consistent basis. The Nokomis area all the way to Powderhorn Park lack good restaurants (or hardly any at all to be more exact) so this is the place to be in that part of South Minneapolis. Even the Mall of America area in Bloomington which is close by lacks a good, solid dive to eat at. I recommened this place highly. You should really order the extreme Jo Jo's. Ask for extra jalepeno's and sour cream if your hoping to increase your daily caloric intake! I will be back to this place when I visit Minneapolis again! PS - The prices are EXTREMELY fair as well.

Ok, so this was my first Juicy Lucy, so I don't know if it is the best, but I know a good burger when I see/taste one. The regular cheeseburgers would be good, I can tell by the way the meat tasted, but when I go there again I'm going to get another Lucy. The appetizers (wings, mozz. sticks) were very good especially the wings. Why does the 5-8 Club only have three starsbon yelp? I will never know.

I want to L-O-V-E the 5-8 Club, as I do some other Twin Cities burger establishments. Two minutes from my home, numerous televisions available to broadcast sporting events, Juicy Lucys, tap beer, walleye sandwiches... all things extremely attractive to me. I want to love 5-8, but after visiting three times, I can't say that I do. My first visit was best... no wait, and my burger with MN wild rice and mushrooms was pretty good. I tried my girl's Lucy as well, and it was pretty darn tasty. Unfortunately, the experience peeked with this first visit. In subsequent visits I have ordered the walleye sandwich and another specialty burger, along with chili and soup. The walleye sandwich was terrible, like something found in a high school cafeteria that has sat out all day, and the burger wasn't as good as the first. I will continue to return, mainly because of the convenience factor, but I wish they would improve the quality of their food. Maybe I came with high expectations, but honestly this place could be so much more.

The wait for our table was horrific, and there was a significant amount of confusion due to the 'seat yourself'. You don't come here for the service, you come for the food. When I was there, right after Christmas, there were only two people waiting so it took forever to even see someone to place our order with. If I was a local or just stumbling on this place, I'm 100% sure I would have gotten up to leave because the wait was really that ridiculous. Lucky for them, I was a "tourist". I had a Senorita Lucita, as of course anywhere I go I will order whatever it is on their menu that's even remotely Mexican. I love spicy food, and the people that joined my husband and I said they really liked their Arnold Palmers. My burger was much spicier then I was expecting it to be and our onion strings were nice and hot. I thought the onion strings were much better than the fries. In the end, I don't really care who was the first to come up with the Juicy Lucy, all I know is I will never look at another hamburger the same way again!

I believe the place is a bit overrated. The cheeseburger was small but the fries were decent. Very average.

The first thing you need to know is you have to go into this place with an open mind, it's not the nicest cleanest place on the planet but their burgers, cheese curds and onion rings are fantastic. In my opinion the best Juicy Lucy in Mpls (if you don't know what that is you must go and try one). It's a tiny little diner/bar in south Minneapolis but for a quick burger and beer it's fantastic!

More of a small restaurant than a dive bar like Matt's. Parking lot is nice. It's about two miles south of Matt's. $13 with tax and tip for a Juicy Lucy, pop, and onion rings. You have your choice of four different cheeses. It was good but not GREAT.

The juicy lucy burger was very good. The service was quite prompt. The place is a bit run down and does not appear to be the best kept (bits of food on the floor and the like after lunch service and no one taking notice). Overall though, worth going to try the burger, which is also reasonably priced, as long as you have low expectations for atmosphere and settings.

Was in Minneapolis conveniently after an episode of Food Wars aired so I thought I'd try Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club for myself. I believe Matt's Bar won which I found surprising cause their burgers looked smaller and more simplistic. I can see why they won! Tried 5-8 first but they offer too many options and toppings that it distracts from the Jucy Lucy element. So to be fair I probably overtopped my burger but even then there was no real jucy lucy factor. The burger was bigger, yes, but the cheese didnt come oozing out at all. You'd probably have to sit on it to get that cheese to come out. So basically it was like eating a decent hearty burger. Fries were forgettable. The unsung hero though? THE CHILI. Order a bowl of chili. Seeing as how Matt's Bar's Jucy Lucy was everything you'd hope for (beware of exploding cheese) I'd say 5-8 club should fold their tent on the whole jucy lucy rivalry and just play up their chili. They should just call the effing place Chili's. If it wasn't already a chain. Spicy, homemade, you can see and taste the different flavors distinctly unlike most chili's which basically just taste like... chili. Matt's Bar wins.

I live close enough to walk to the Maplewood location and have visited often. Its great to have a place like this in the neighborhood and I'm glad the 58 is here. Of the burgers, I'd say the juicy lucy with blue cheese is my favorite but I rarely get it in favor of other things. Burger-wise, nothing here compares to the Nookie Supreme at Shamrock or the Nook. Most often I get the hamburger steak with onions and mushrooms or the hangover pork tenderloin or the ribs or one of the nightly specials. The cole slaw is great and I love love love the fact you can get a cup of soup or chili with dinner for $1. Perfect for a cold winter night! And 1919 on tap! Woo Hoo! And they server until 10:00 -- a rarity in this area... On the minus side, I have no idea how they can possibly make a fried chicken so bland. I love fried chicken and it makes me want to march back into the kitchen and show them how to make it better. The staff performs in a perfunctory fashion, like functional Prozac heads, and it irks me I've been here dozens of times over the years and yet there's never a hint of recognition or acknowledgement.

A group of us went to meet Juicy Lucy at the 5-8 Club. My friends thought She was smokin' delicious - all agreed that She was one of the best they ever set eyes on, but with some courage, I told her... "Lucy, I know you're popular with people in the Midwest, but I'm sorry girl, you've got NOTHING on In-N-Out." Try again in your next lifetime.

Much has been said already so I will just chime in quickly. Pros: lots of seating compared to Matt's, many varieties of burgers (including the modest but good GCB) and other stuff, yummy bountiful sides, pretty good service, lots of tradition. Cons: burgers can sometimes be dry or just too big to eat when you get a basket full of fries, the extreme jojos are scary, can be so busy sometimes that you just turn around and leave, great first impression wears off after a while. Note: I have freed the cheese.

I lived in the Twin Cities, just down the road, in the late 1990's. Took my family back to show them around and they loved it. Old school burger joint. Very busy and loud, but worth it. Great price and excellent burgers. Try it, you'll like it.

Why does one go to the 5-8 Club? For the Juicy Lucy, of course! Having tried The Nook's version - the Juicy Nookie - I was excited to try the place that claims to be the joint that started this crazy burger phenomenon. My parents and I walked in just after noon on a Saturday and the place was already completely full. They didn't have a waiting list so we just stood and waited for a table to open up, which only took a few minutes. Our waitress came over and "greeted" us. She seemed kind of annoyed to be waiting on us and never really did warm up. But onto the food. Of course we ordered the Juicy Lucy's. I ordered mine with american cheese and a side of fries. Maybe they were short on cheese that day because I didn't get the mess of ooey-gooeyness that I was expecting. There was an okay amount but I wanted to be covered in the stuff. And the burger itself was slightly overcooked. The fries were solid but nothing that knocked my socks off. Compared to the other Juicy I had at The Nook in St. Paul I have to say the Juicy Nookie was better. Next time I'm craving a cheese-stuffed piece of meat, I'm heading to St. Paul.

Yeah, I'm one of the Travel Channel food nerds who went here after seeing Man v. Food. I'm not ashamed. I just happened to be in Minneapolis not too long after the MvF episode aired, so I had to try a Juicy Lucy. Matt's Bar was closer to our hotel, but the 5-8 was the only one open on Labor Day, so they win my personal Juicy Lucy contest by default. I'll just have to go back to try Matt's. I ordered mine with American cheese even though I'm a cheese snob; I just thought it was a good barometer of burger competency. The husband had his with pepper jack. Neither of us were disappointed. The burgers are good-sized but not unmanageable. Ours both had plenty of nice gooey cheese, and the beef was tender and flavorful. They only come with one pickle (hiding under the burger) so I would have ordered extra pickles had I known that. I do love pickle-y burgers. We skipped the fries in favor of fried cheese curds (delicious) and the onion straws (which were excellent and came in a huge pile). Nice beer selection- we had a pitcher of local Summit IPA. Our server was top-notch despite handling most of the dining room by herself. The only drawback was seating. We lined up at the door, which forces you to stare at nearby tables as they eat.

My rating is based on my experience with the 5-8 Club's Juicy Lucy. Having tried the Juicy Lucy at Matt's, The Groveland Tap, and the 5-8 Club, I can say that this Lucy is a distant third. The Lucy's at the 5-8 club are stunning example of quantity over quality. They offer a handful of variations to the classic Lucy. The patties larger and more filling but completely unsatisfying. The meat was dry and devoid of flavor, the cheese was not gooey or juicy, and the bun was stale. It is hard for me to believe that this is even compared to Matt's Lucy. I have a passion for spicy food and was delighted when I saw the Pepper Lucy on the menu. I'm not sure what their definition of "heat" and "pepper" are, but this was devoid of nearly all flavor. The Groveland Tap does it right with their Cajun Lucy. Despite the sad excuse of a Lucy, the overall experience was pleasant. The service was expedient and the dining room was spacious, well lit, and clean. For those interested, here is a little more comparison between the 5-8 Club and Matt's bar: -Matt's is small, dark and understaffed. The 5-8 is larger, brighter, and the service is quick. -Matt's is tight seating. The 5-8 is more spread out like a typical neighborhood bar and grill. -You have to park on the street when you go to Matt's. The 5-8 has a private lot. -Both places tend to have a line so if you don't want to wait, avoid anything near peak meal hours. -Matt's menu could fit on a business card. The 5-8 has much more selection, including several variations on their Juicy Lucy. -Both have a somewhat narrow beer selection (for Minneapolis standards, at least) -The Lucy's at the 5-8 are bigger. However, the Lucy's at Matt's are much tastier in every way.

I decided to check out this place with a friend that was visiting from Iowa, who never had a juicy lucy or even heard of it before. I have had juicy lucys before at the Nook and Blue Door pub, and I wanted to check out this place as it was supposed to be one the places that was considered the birth place of the juicy lucy. Overall, I would say my burger was good, but I have had more flavorful juicy lucys at the Blue Door Pub and the Nook. The bun just seemed to taste stale to me which threw off the taste of the burger. I will say at a half pound, the burger is on the cheaper side for the size of the burger; however, I want quality of quantity. The service was a little on the lacking side which is why this is a 3 star instead of a 4 star review. My friend and I were seated at the bar since there was not a table open which is fine. What was not cool, was the fact that we were promptly ignored for about 10 minutes before we were asked if we wanted a beer. Once we got our beers, it took about another 10 minutes before the bartender came back to take our order. Yes, the bar was busy, but not when we first arrived at around 4:30pm and there were a couple other servers that were standing at the bar that could have helped out the bartender. Overall, the price was reasonable. For 4 Nordeast, 2 Juicy Lucy's and an order of fries, our total to about $30. Based on the level of service and not being wowed by the burger, I wouldn't make a special trip there again, but I would go back if I was in the area.

I went to 5-8 because they are allegedly the home of the Juicy Lucy, and of course i ordered one. To be honest, I had better... just like Alexander Grand Bell invented the telephone, Thomas Edison made it better... Don't get me wrong, it was not a bad Juicy Lucy.

This place came highly recommended and did not disappoint. The onion loaf was amazing and we were given so much food! The Juicy Lucy's were just as good as advertised. Nice atmospher with cool signs on the wall and the Man versus Food plaque. Service was quick and it was crowded. Would return if in the area.

I was excited when a friend of mine said we would seek out the Juicy Lucy but a bit concerned it wouldn't live up to my expectations when I read the reviews here. However, I loved my experience. I actually opted for the Saucy Sally with sautéed onions and it hit the spot. I had jojo's on the side but could not finish them as I was so full from the burger.

They may have invented the juicy lucy. They might not have either. But, if we are comparing apples to apples...this jucy lucy isn't my favorite. It's good. But, it's not as good as I have had at ...maybe a place down the street. I think the bun is too thick. I also think it's not as greasy. None of this is bad...but I just didn't love it. However, I will give props to the restaurant. Its pretty big and the bar is good too. I will come back to try the Saucy Sally.

When my friends and I were deciding where to go today for lunch I finally made the decision we need to try 5-8 club since none of us have ever been there. I'm a burger fan and am always in the mood for a good burger. Plus I love Jucy Lucy's. (Juicy Lucy's) Whichever. But even with man vs food and food wars etc. I have to try things for myself before I make my opinion. But before I talk about the food I shall talk about the service. Today when we were there it was during lunch hour. Service from the get go was slow. Took about 10 mins or so for a server to even come ask us for a drink order. Food came out pretty quickly after it was ordered. When it came to the check it took the server at least 10-15 mins after we were done eating to even come near our table. No bueno. I know it's busy and all but need to make a better effort. Ok and now to the food. I've tried Lucy's around the Mpls-St. Paul area including the big names like The Nook, Shamrock's (which is owned by The Nook of course), The Blue Door Pub, and Matt's Bar. I am actually going to place 5-8 club at the very bottom of this list for quality of the Lucy. It just didn't live up to the hype it's brought. It tasted like just plain ol burger with cheese in the middle instead of on top. I also thought they were suppose to use a lot more cheese in their burgers than most. Well not true with mine I guess. It wasn't juicy and there wasn't much flavor to it. Fries were eh. The Jojo potato wedges were good though. My Lucy list: 1. Matt's Bar 2. The Nook 3. Shamrock's 4. Buffalo Tap 5. Blue Door Pub 6. TBD 7. TBD 8. 5-8 Club

Been here before. Was looking forward to another juicy Lucy. Burger was smaller than the last time I have been here and thy burned the heck out of my onion rings. Waitress was nice and cute but almost had to tackle her to get anything. Maybe man vs food needs to come back so they pick it up again

The moment my husband saw Juicy Lucy in Man vs. Food, he promised to himself that he'd go there when he had a chance. So when their department was sent to Minneapolis for a conference, he brought me and my 18 month old son with him and 5-8 Club was in our "MUST VISIT" list. We went to the "other" jucy lucy and found that it was more of a bar than a restaurant and was not that kid-friendly so we went to 5-8 club with high hopes that it'd reach my husband's expectation (more of his excitement and "dream"). When we were asked of our orders we didn't have to think twice, we ordered what's the restaurant was known for...Juicy Lucy! Our eyes met on our first bite and we were both speechless, just enjoyed the moment. It was so delicious and juicy! The melted cheese inside the juicy burger patty was just to die for. The meal has fries and coleslaw. We arrived there at around 10-ish pm on a Sunday night so there were only a few customers there and we were able to find a booth. There's also plenty of parking space. Very nice server, too.

Will not visit again. Went to the 5-8 today for lunch, and I got there around 11:30am knowing that it's a busy place for weekday lunch from past experiences. There was no waiting for tables so it was not as busy as I have seen in the past, which is why I don't understand the issues I had today. Knowing how slow things can be sometimes, I got out my phone just to see how long I would wait for things. It took 5 minutes for my server to acknowledge me, and I immediately gave her my order for a Juicy Lucy basket. It took almost 20 minutes for my food to arrive, and it was not even hot. It was not cold either, but the cheese inside was already starting to congeal, and was not the great melty consistency needed for a Juicy Lucy. Given the extensive wait for everything, it's just not worth it for me to every go back. If the food was rock solid that would be one thing, but to have extreme waits for poor to average food is not worth it. I'll go to Matt's or the Nook next time I'm craving a Juicy Lucy.

After visiting Matt's and then Buffalo Tap, I had to round out the trifecta to eat here. I have lived in the Twin Cities awhile and have not been to the 5-8 Club, I am ashamed I know. My sister was in town and we thought we would hop in for lunch. There was quite a crowd even around 1pm. We finally got seated and ordered nothing other than a Juicy Lucy. It took quite awhile and by the time my burger was delivered almost all of the cheese had oozed out the side. It was still darn tasty but I have had better food from a burger joint before. I guess with all of the hype I had heard that this food "would knock my socks" off left me.. well, with my socks. Overall I would recommend this place but I don't think I would call this one of my staple locations to visit.

It's just not good. We are visiting from out of state and made this our destination to try the famous Juicy Lucy. We really don't add salt at restaurants - certainly not on burgers - but this bland Lucy needed it. The burger's blue cheese slid right out of the bottom when my husband held it up. My fried walleye was like school lunch room fish sticks with no salt. I wish this had been a 3+ star review, but this must be one of those places that locals love and visitors just don't get.

Slow, slow, slow. Great burger. Well worth the wait. I have had the Jucy Lucy before. This time I opted for a quarter pound mushroom swiss. This burger is soooo much better than Matt's. Skip the onion rings though. They are straight from the Sysco's truck to the deep fryer to you. Definitely nothing special there. Word to the wise? If you are having trouble finding a parking place, you should visit 5-8 another time. You want to eat these burgers at their best!

This was my first Juicy Lucy experience. While it may not be my favorite Lucy... I think everyone should try both places... because this one is still great. The difference between this place and Matt's is that this restaurant is a lot nicer inside (Matt's is a total dive), has outdoor seating, and you can get different types of cheese inside your burger. Try them both, cheese inside a burger is just a great idea in general and you really can't make a bad one.

I believe eating, much like poker, is not a spectator sport. You eat; you don't watch others eat. Fortunately for me, my friends don't share my opinion on this subject. As soon as they heard I was heading to Minneapolis, they told me to try the Juicy Lucy. To an outsider, it sounds like a piece of advice you'd get at a strip club, but nevertheless... We showed up at 5-8 Club around 1 pm on a Friday afternoon, and the line was pretty long. There were about 20 people in front of us, patiently waiting in line in a cramped lobby and a tiny foyer. The line formed at the door in spite of the "please seat yourself" sign. I love the honor system, but I dare anyone to try that in New York. After a 15 minute wait, highlighted by a lively conversation with the locals, we were finally seated at a small table in the corner. The walls were adorned with old tin advertising signs - my favorite. I found them to be much more entertaining than the replay of the Twins/Orioles game from the night before. I'd love to say that as far as prices go, this place can't be beat. A pitcher of Leinenkugel for $10? Yes, please! Naturally, we didn't come here for the beer. We came here for the juicy lucy ($5.50), which is precisely what we got. I ordered mine with a basket (for $1.99 more, I got fries and coleslaw) as well. Note to all future visitors: one basket of fries is big enough to share. Another note: the gigantic onion rings seemed like a more exciting choice. Our waitress seemed really busy, but she still found the time to smile and take care of everyone and everything. I am just going to say it, I love the Midwest. As for the burger itself... well, sadly, I was not impressed. Sure, it had the famous cheese inside the burger patty, which is all the rage. My burger tasted very dry, and even the cheese on the inside didn't help the cause. I was a tad disappointed, since the burger announces its juiciness right in it's name. It's not called "dry Lucy" or "chewy Lucy" after all. I should have maybe asked for it to be made medium, not medium well (default prep method). The burger is topped with onions upon request, but no lettuce or tomatoes. Some might see it is a drawback, but I see it as a huge plus. 5-8 Club is a former speakeasy, and I appreciate the drab exterior and the unassuming interior. However, I refuse to speak easy about the not-so-juicy Lucy. I might just stick to ordering my burgers with cheese on the outside. What are those called again? Oh, that's right. We call them "cheeseburgers."

My mom and her husband recommended this place and I must say the food is a must have!! I ordered the nachos with beef and a juicy Lucy.. That food was mouth watering to the very last bite! Not only was the bartender very nice but it also didn't take long before the food was ready.. I highly recommend!!

This is the best Juicy Lucy in town. I love coming here on the weekend and always bring family from out of town here, it's a fun place. Also, be sure to get the side of fried onions for your table, and put some of them on your burger. The Burgers and the Fried Onions a little too greasy for some people, but fat = flavor. Just exercise a little more after going to 5-8.

Went to the famous 5-8 Club for my Birthday dinner. I appreciated the sign letting us know to seat ourselves (I'm usually the guy giving a blank stare to a waiter or waitress at the front of the restaurant wanting to know if it's OK to sit anywhere). I of course do what you are suppose to do and ordered the infamous Juicy Lucy plus some french fries and my G.F. ordered the same with onion rings. The french fries had a great crunch to them but I found myself needing to dunk them in ketchup or wash them down with beer since they were so dry. They onion ring's breading was great -- it had a beautiful crunch to it. The Juicy Lucy was a good size and came with a fair amount of cheese stuffed in the middle, but like the fries I had to wash it down with a beer or add ketchup. I was surprised that a burger with so much cheese in it would run my mouth dry. Overall not bad food.

Such a cute place! I love it. We were lucky enough to not have to wait for a table. Service was fast but some of the waitresses were a bit grumpy. (It's crowded . . get over it!) You quickly learn to share your ketchup with the people next to you!. I feel that I have crossed the border into "true" minnesotian with now having a Juicy Lucy. It was one of the best burgers that I have had in a long time. Dinner for 2 at under $20.00!? I'll take it any day!

With all the recent hype surrounding the original Ju(i)cy Lucy's, I was a bit embarrassed that as a native Minnesotan, I had never been to Matt's or the 5-8 Club, although this might have something to do with the fact that I grew up in St. Paul. I went out with my Dad and my Girlfriend for lunch on Sunday and I wanted to sample Matt's and the 5-8 to see who made the better Lucy. I actually went to Matt's first, because by most accounts they appear to be the original, but hopped back into the car when there was a huge line of people waiting for one of the dozen or so tables. We drove down Cedar two miles to the 5-8, which also had a line, but there were quite a few more tables. The line moved pretty quick and we had a table in 10-15 minutes. We ordered right away and the food took about 30 minutes to arrive. The Juicy Lucy costs $4.99 and is another $2 with fries. Check the mail for a val-pak coupon, 5-8 has one for $3.15 off any menu item. Don't come here expecting to be blown away by an entirely new type of burger. Its just a cheeseburger with the cheese on the inside. But there is a good amount of cheese and it is pretty gooey. You definitely notice that there is cheese on this burger. Lots of times you'll get a cheeseburger at some restaurants and will not notice that it has cheese at all. You will notice the cheese here. I'd opt for the onion rings or at least the wedge cut fries. They are both pretty decent. I didn't really care for the regular fries. The place was very busy the entire them we were there. They only had one waitress working the restaurant portion. We got a 1 refill on our soda when the food was brought out. We were happy with that. I wouldn't expect much else. We requested ketchup, but she must have forgotten about it. Luckily, our neighbor's were nice enough to share. All in all, a decent burger, but nothing that will blow your mind. The Nook is quite a bit better. But this was well worth the wait and not to expensive. We were all full. Sampling Matt's Lucy in the same day was definitely out of the question.

Before I begin, I give this more of a 3.5 than a 3... So I have lived in the Twin Cities for two years now, and still had not tried the most popular culinary dish, the Juicy Lucy - two beef patties cooked with cheese in the middle! I have heard of quite a few places that claim to have the best one, so I started with the 5-8 Club. I ordered a standard Juicy Lucy with American cheese. It is really good! I was warned to be careful because "the cheese could burn your mouth"..."cut a hole in it to let it vent". But it was completely doable to eat right away. In fact, I would have preferred for it to be a few degrees hotter, but no major complaints. The cheese oozes out, just as advertised, and the meat was prepared perfectly, that is not too well done. What surprised me in a good way was that the burger was not too greasy. I was expecting something dripping with grease, but that wasn't the case. Other reviews mention the slow service. I'll admit the waitress wasn't speedy gonzalez, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Honestly, when you walk in and see how laid back the place is, you wouldn't expect the service to be 5 star, it's very very laid back. The fries and onion rings were good, but still average in my book. What's keeping me from bumping this up to a four is that my eyes did not light up when I bit into it. It was good, damn good, but not something I would text the world about to try. I would definitely go back multiple times. Next up is Matt's Bar and The Nook! P.S. I know this is really random, but it was surprisingly quiet in there. Not sure if it was just me, but I was expecting a louder environment...I don't know, just thought I would throw that out there.

After seeing the Food Network's Man vs. Food in Minneapolis, I had to try the Juicy Lucy while visiting the Twin Cities. This being the first time I had experienced a burger comprised of two patties surrounding a chunk of cheese, I had no benchmark for what makes a "good" Juicy Lucy. Nonetheless, I wasn't disappointed and enjoyed the oozing cheese with each bite. I dined with the lunch crowd, so the service wasn't amazing but friendly enough. I plan to stop at the 5-8 Club the next time I'm in town.

So yes, I am one of those annoying tourists that came from Chicago with one question in mind: Which Juicy (or Jucy) Lucy is THE Ju(i)cy Lucy?? Who could come to this great city and not ponder that question. Well, my friends. I have the answer and it is that 5-8 Club is NOT the one. I don't give two anythings about who the original was, I don't care who spells it "right", I care who makes it well. I was highly disappointed at my first Ju(i)cy Lucy experience and almost bailed on the whole mission all together. The burger was just bad - the meat was over cooked, chewy, and under flavored, the bun was nothing special, the toppings were just ok, and the cheese in the middle? gummy and weird. I didn't even finish the half that I was eating, and after a morning of hiking around Minnehaha I was starving! The only redeeming thing was the onion rings, and really - they weren't that special. The service was just okay and the atmosphere was non existent. I honestly can't think of a reason to go here especially when (I'm sorry) Matt's Bar is just down the street.
