Arrived at 8:40 pm on a Friday night and they refused to serve us when they close at 9:00pm. Never going to come here again.

Very small portions for the price. We will not make a return visit.

Kara D and I will forever be connected by our sea squirt experience at Gangnam Korean Restaurant. (More on that later.) Are we now closer friends? Absolutely. ***** With only a handful of Korean joints in the Twin Cities, I immediately bookmarked Gangnam with hopes that it would become my top dog for favorite Korean joint. It didn't, but I think it's still solid. I. FOOD *Shrimp Tempura: I'm not sure if they're going for a whimsical take on this classic appetizer, but it just lacked both flavor and a bigger crunch. They should consider using heartier shrimps. *Pork Bulgogi: Pretty good and definitely the best part of our meal. Their house-made sauce rocks, and I'm pretty sure if I were drunk enough, I could pound several shots of it. Yes, even if it was steaming hot. *Seafood Casserole: Sure, this monstrous soup came with clams, crabs, shrimps, calamari, monkfish, cod, tofu, noodles, vegetables, and, err, sea squirts, but as a person that indulges in the monthly hot pot with my family, for $30, I expected something with more salt and spice. Maybe, they should re-work their recipe and add some kind of stock to get more umami. Or peppers. Whatever. Also, while I get the inedible and briny sea squirts were supposed to add more flavor, they didn't add very much. II. SERVICE We had a very sweet lady serve us, and the food didn't take too long to come out. That's pretty important for those with rigid lunch hours. No qualms here. III. DÉCOR/ ATMOSPHERE Inside has your traditional Korean décor with a decent amount of sunlight from the front windows. Also, I love that this place is incredibly clean. IV. OVERALL I would definitely return, because I'm very curious to try the other items on the menu. (I'm eyeing their Dolsot Bibimba and Galbitang.) But for now, I think three stars is a fair and would consider choosing other Korean restaurants over this one.

We had the sweet potato tempura appetizer and the seafood casserole dish. It was delicious! The kimchi sides were tasty too. The seafood casserole was more than plenty for both of us. The atmosphere was quiet and calm and very clean. We'll head back sometime to try Korean barbecue.

This place definitely surprised me, in a good way! Being that the Twin Cities doesn't have the best Korean food options, I did not have high hopes for it but thought it would be worth a try. I came here for dinner with a friend and ordered the soon tofu stew while he ordered the dolsot bibimbap. We got five side dishes with the order, which were fish cakes, kimchi, bean sprouts, zucchini, and potato. These were all pretty tasty, with the exception of the fish cakes which were a little old and chewy. The dishes came out quickly, both hot and sizzling in their stone pots. They looked pretty standard, as Korean dishes go. In terms of taste, the soon tofu was flavorful and very hearty. It was not super salty or completely bland, which is a problem I've had with other places. There was soft tofu, clams, shrimp, and octopus in my stew, pretty solid. I tried a bite of my friend's dolsot and it was decently tasty. Overall, much better Korean food than I expected from a small restaurant hidden in a shopping strip in Maplewood. One of the better spots to get soon tofu stew or other Korean staples in the Twin Cities. Will likely be back next time I am in town!

Food is good. Every Korean Restaurant I've been to had thier style of cooking. Slightly pricey on the food you get. I've been to many Korean restaurants and this one was an average one.

Galbi was great! Appetizer size on the calamari was way too small. Establishment was clean, and staff was friendly. My family and I will definitely be back!

We lived in South Korea for three years where we fell in love with the food. We have been to just about every Korean restaurant in the Twin Cities. This is by far the best Korean food we have ever had. I had the kimchi jjigae which is my favorite and it was spicy and flavorful. The kimchi was delicious. It's hard to find good kimchi here. My husband had the spicy chicken bulgogi which is really dalk galbi. It was fantastic. We ended up visiting twice between Christmas and New Year. We were both craving it. If you want authentic, delicious Korean food, this is the place!

It is always hard to figure out how your experience at a restaurant can be so different than someone else's but I very much enjoyed my visit here. Yes, the kimchee was more bitter than I would prefer and the shredded potato was a little boring but the beef bulgogi was very good. Is it the best Korean I've had? No, but I will be back.

The food was just okay and only one waitress was working so service was not so great.

I had a decent lunch here recently, but mostly due to being amused by JT telling the most ridiculous stories in the most casual manner. You know what I mean. Overall I enjoyed coming here, and will most likely be back for another weekday lunch, but there were a lot of pros and cons that yielded a middle-ground satisfactory 3 stars. So begins my oscillating review. I like the location because it is halfway between where I work and live, plus my life revolves around private parking lot availability. The inside decor was nothing memorable. Clean, though. The lady who served us was very sweet and always smiling. Very sweet but not attentive - we had to grab her attention for several things like drink refills, getting the check and a container for our leftovers. The food was good, or "A-OK" or whatever. We ordered: shrimp tempura, pork bulgogi, and seafood casserole. I wasn't a huge fan of the tempura... the only way I can describe it's flavor is that it kinda tasted the way a nursing home smells. Yeah, sorry. Pork bulgogi was very good! It had great flavor and was wicked tender. It wasn't too spicy either. The seafood casserole was actually a very large soup. It was full of a large variety of items: squid, whitefish, crab, tofu... sea squirts. Yes, sea squirts. It shouldn't be too shocking that I would describe it as "penis of the sea". I thought they were tolerable, JT not so much. And the texture of the fish made me wonder how long it had been frozen for (though I am just speculating)... I would just order different things next time.

Came in on a Tuesday night, so the place was empty but a few other parties came in towards the end of my visit. Ordered japchae, seafood pancake & galbi. Both galbi & seafood pancake were good, but the japchae was bland. I found the servings to be smaller than expected. Very clean place & service was quick. I'll go back to try other dishes.

Gangnam is in a little strip mall next to Chipotle and Papa John's so I wasn't expecting much to begin with. It's a small restaurant, but very clean, and new! I think the owner said they just opened in September. The menu has usual Korean fare, bibimbaps, different jiggaes, japchae, bulgogi, and galbis, more soups/stews, and my favorite, tteokbokki. My mom and I decided to try something different than our usuals, I had a cod jiggae (stew) and she had some sort of snail stir fry. )We're actually not sure what exactly it was she ordered, but I googled the Korean word for it, and a type of snail popped up.) Both were delicious. To be honest, I didn't really like my mom's dish, but that's because I don't like snails, not because of the taste. My jiggae was delicious! Very spicy. Sometimes jiggaes can be too spicy and there's no flavor in the broth, but I found the broth itself to be VERY flavorful. Also, we got banchan (and as far as I know it's unlimited refills! But I didn't need any because I was so full). Service was super friendly. Our server explained each banchan dish which I thought was a nice touch for those who don't know anything about Korean food. And the owner (a Korean lady) even helped explaining the snail dish. We even saw the Korean grandma in the back preparing all the food. The only downside, in my opinion, was that kimbap was only available during lunch hours for a lunch special. But it seemed like they had good lunch specials if you can make it during that time. Perhaps if you asked they might even make it for dinner, but I didn't bother asking.

Gangnam is the best Korean restaurant in the Twin Cities. I think I probably ate there every weekend for over a month. What keeps me coming back is the authentic food, the very attentive staff, and their "zen" atmosphere. We ordered the chicken wings, shrimp tempura, and the seafood pancake to share. The food didn't take long at all and it was fabulously cooked! I had the Soybean Paste Soup and it was AMAZING. Everyone at my table who tried it kept nibbling at it throughout the meal (which was annoying for me, but I couldn't really blame them because that's how good it was). By the end of the meal, we were happy and full -- even better is how little it cost us; this place not only has the best Korean food in the Twin Cities, it's also the most decently priced. It's only been a few weeks since I've gone back and I think I've been having withdrawals. I should also mention that this place is SO clean; it's spotless. And it has such a soothing atmosphere. That's never really a "make-or-break" thing, but in this case, it makes for a wonderfully pleasant dining experience. Their combination of great food, attentive staff, and calm, relaxing atmosphere has me thinking I need to make another trip there this weekend.

Late korean dinner with a dear friend. Missed the rush hour so that was great (7:00 pm) the food tasted so much better than other korean restaurants I've eaten at. Glad to have tried this place :)

This was easily the most disappointing Korean food experience I have ever had in the Twin Cities. I've known for a while that nothing can really compare to the delicious offerings at The Mirror in St. Paul, but I didn't expect Gangnam to fail so miserably. Dumplings - overcooked and without any flavor. They tasted as if they were just moved directly from a freezer into oil that was too hot. Cod Stew - This had potential, but it was far hotter than the 'mildly spicy' that is used to describe it on the menu. I don't mind spicy food at all, but this was ridiculously hot, probably to disguise the fact that the only other flavor in the stew was the cod. Bibimbap - Absolutely flavorless. The teaspoon full of meat added to this dish was dry and wasn't seasoned at all. The vegetables had no flavors of their own. The 'fried egg' was barely cooked at all, with half of the white still liquid on top. I don't mind runny yolk, but the white of the egg needs to be cooked. The menu says thiat comes with a side of vegetable soup, but that wasn't given to us. Beef bulgogi - Was far too sweet; there was no mix of soy, garlic, and sesame to bring out a whole range of flavors. It tasted like the beef was marinated in soy and sugar. Banchan - Every single side was terrible. The kimchi was extremely sour, and the other sides had absolutely no flavor. I can honestly say that I've never had a whole round of bland sides at a Korean restaurant, but Gangnam managed to offer it. I love Korean food, and this was a whole meal of sadness and disappointment. What a sad experience. I would encourage everyone to go to The Mirror, Hoban, or King's in the Twin Cities. There is no worthwhile reason to visit Gangnam.

Fresh, homemade Korean with no added MSG. Family-owned and very tasty! Prices are great and you get so much food! Highly recommend.

I have a new resolution to post more on Yelp when I have a good dining experience, so I've decided to start with Gangnam Korean Restaurant.. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would encourage both adventurous and basic diners alike to try it out. I was in town visiting friends and we were all tired of greasy bar food with mounds of cheese curds. I wanted to try something "different" and found Gangnam after a few local Google searches. I decided to give it a shot and I'm certainly glad I did. The location is great and very accessible from the highway. The restaurant is in a strip mall, but you'd never know that after you're seated for your meal. The soothing music and peaceful ambiance is far different from your typical strip mall fast-food joint. The dining area and particularly the restroom was spotless and you can tell they work at keeping everything clean. For example, while I was eating, the family next to me spilled their drinks and three of the waitstaff ran over to help them clean it up. That's service. We started with the chicken wings and quickly cleaned my plate. I didn't think I'd want chicken wings after a few days of bar food, but I couldn't resist after seeing them on the table next to ours. The bbq sauce on the wings was delicious and I felt like it was just enough flavoring. They were fried to perfection. I even ordered some extra to take back to the place I was staying.:) The waitress walked me through the menu and explained some of the more traditional dishes for us. I ordered a beef entree with numerous sides. The sides were delicious, especially this potato one. It was more food than my party could finish, but they were great about wrapping the leftovers up, along with my extra order of wings. I didn't have the dumplings, but I brought some as a gift to some friends I was visiting at the University of Minnesota and they raved about them. I would recommend trying Gangnam out as a unique and delicious dining experience.

Chicken wings were plain. Side dishes were bland. Had the pancake. It was ok. Not the best, but good enough if you're desperate for korean food.
