Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Bland food, weak drinks, nice wait staff. Too many great places in Duluth to eat to come back to this one. However, beautiful new building they just moved into.

Great lunch and new location.

Mediocre food. High prices, particularly for this area. My chimichanga was not close to crispy, it was closer to a burrito. My wife's bland enchiladas were buried under an ocean of cheese. Our daughter's quesadilla from the children's menu, despite a $5.25 price tag, was a single tortilla filled with cheese, folded in half and slightly warmed. I can understand treating kid's meals as an afterthought if they are free or bargain priced, but this was inexcusable. The margaritas are shockingly weak and overpriced. I don't drink often, which means that I fell buzzed while drinking a single beer. It was my birthday, and I had two margaritas on the rocks (at $6.25 each) and did not feel a thing. The only nice thing i have to say is that their salsa is ok. I will not, however, be going back.

Loud inside the downtown loacation. Food was ok--seemed like standard frozen stuff warmed up. Service was average.

So I'm missing me some tamales so my fiancé and I head out here! The food was really good! Very authentic, this coming from a girl whose from CA and misses her taco trucks, the service was okay only bc the guy didn't seem to understand the questions we were asking. But that's what makes it authentic I guess. Their chips n salsa, which was free, was delicious. But my fiancé likes the cabbage salsa and again the server didn't seem to understand what we were asking for, butthe regular salsa was great too. Definately a place I'd attend again.

No one at the Host Station. Had to wait about 10 minutes before anyone showed up to seat us. The restaurant was nearly empty and it was only 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday. Once seated, the service was fast. The food was mediocre at best.

We were definitely in the mood for Mexican and didn't want to drive downtown so thought we'd hit up the Maya in it's new location. Unfortunately, that turned into a mistake. From walking in the door to walking out the door, we were disappointed in our experience. There were three girls standing up front, but it still took them minutes to seat us. The actual decor, booths, and such were all done nicely and our server was pleasant. The menu descriptions were good for someone that is unfamiliar with Mexican dishes. If you like cilantro - you'll love their salsa - it's filled with it. We also got the chili con queso dip as an appetizer - it was like melted a block of cheese, no seasoning and very thick. The prices were a little higher than other Mexican restaurants, so one would assume for a reason...but the food was absolutely terrible. There was no flavor at all in any of our four dishes (two adult meals, two kids meals). It was the most unsatisfying $60 ever spent on a lunch and you will not find us back in their restaurant. On a side note, I have heard their margaritas are fantastic.

The Mexican Maya is one of my very top favorite restaurants-- to the point where some staff members don't bother to card me when I get drinks. Good thing? Bad thing? Don't judge. I have been going to the Mexican Maya ever since it opened, and I get the same thing almost every time. Super Burrito Manadero= burrito heaven. I love it so much, that that's what I listed as my last meal on earth under my account. Their nachos are also fabulous, and I have had quite a few other yummy things in my tenure there. I will say that I have seen other guests get very boring looking food there from time to time (my fiance got a taco salad, and the ground beef and shredded lettuce looked so terrible), but overall their food is great. When you're at a Mexican restaurant, you should never get ground beef, anyway. Shredded chicken or carnitas is the way to go. Chips and salsa is free, and their salsa is my favorite. Their happy hour is great-- half off drinks, $3 off apps, every day of the week. I will agree with another poster that their prices are a little high, but I would only compare that to some hole in the wall Mexican food place. The prices are still very reasonable in my estimation. Since the Maya moved to their new location, it has changed. They had to hire quite a few more people, so not everyone working there is actually Mexican anymore, but the food is the same, and that is all that matters. Plus the new building is WAY better looking. Food is extremely quick at the Maya, and service is always great.

Always looking for a great mexican restaurant, we read reviews on the majority of the local restaurants and decided to give this one a try. The salsa was great and as one of the reviews stated the green onions a nice change up. Just the perfect hotness. The chips could have used a little salt and not too much flavor but with the salsa as good as it was it really did not matter. I ordered the salsa burrito verde which not to my liking. However our waiter was great and it was very clean.

In college this was my friends and my hang out spot. We would come here every week to get the AMAZING and delicious Chile con queso dip. From 3-6 and after 9 they have happy hour which includes half off margaritas and half of apps. Go for the queso dip and the margaritas! I miss this place so much. Also take notice of the pictures on the wall... you may find some interesting things!

Not impressed tonight, Cancun Platter had maybe a tablespoon of crab meat from a can with shells in it...I guess that qualifies it as "real" real crab meat. The salsa tasted off. For a higher then average priced Mexican restaurant I expected more.

This restaurant is wonderful. Great authentic Mexican food. Fabulous salsa, wish they would put out a bit more but they will refill. The atmosphere is fun with great Mexican music playing. You have to try the "Super Burrito". We always get the chicken. Comes with sour cream but if you love guacamole pay the extra. Homemade. We just love it! Drive an hour just to eat there! If you have any problems with your order, they will happily fix it.

Great food, and I mean that...but absolutely the worst service in the bar area!! Been there 3 times now, and will not be back again.

Taco Bell would have been a better bet to have Mexican food. Tortillas were cold and very bland. Ordered something called Chicken Maya. Nothing had any flavoring. Only thing I really liked was the tamale. The chicken tasted as if it had marinated in lemon juice. Never going there again.

I dined at the Maya with my girlfriend recently. Our veggie burritos were basically what I could have made at home with a bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower, a store bought tortilla and a can of beans. The beans were home cooked, but probably 4-5 days ago and were like 10 beans floating in bean juice total, like it was boring soup. For flavor, there was a little cheese and some thin, watery canned enchilada sauce. The broccoli and cauliflower was weird, how about something normal for Mexican food? Onion, squash, corn, mushroom, chiles? The avocado garnish had a good sized brown pit in it (see photo...). I can't imagine they are looking their food over very carefully. We waited 4-5 minutes in the entryway to start with. Service was okay after that. Salsa is adequate, seems like it was frozen. The salsa was the best part as overall the food was dry and not really interesting enough to enjoy eating. I can make better food at home with a jar of salsa and an onion. My suggestion to the Maya is to try adding some flavor to their food...Lime, garlic, chiles, cilantro, dried chile, oregano, bay leaves, coriander... you know... And maybe make food in smaller batches more often. That is, try a bit harder...

My boyfriend and I have been here about 5 or 6 times and we love it! The place is clean, the food is delicious, the portions are good sized, the prices are reasonable and it's authentic! The margaritas here are sooo yummy too! Oh and I forgot to mention the service is excellent. Getting to the restaurant is a bit of a tread but it's so worth it! I definitely recommend this place!

I stopped by Maya Family Mexican Restaurant after a long day at work to relax and try something new. My date met me, and we were quickly seated at a colorful booth and after some time to review the menu we were offered adult beverages of our choice. Food order was quick, but honestly the food was rather bland. I have had authentic Mexican food but my overall experience was three stars due to ample parking and clean bathroom facilities. I am not sure I would recommend this place to my friends and family

Pretty decent Mexican food for Duluth. Good salsa and decent quesadillas. It's a cool restaurant, I will probably visit it again when I'm in Duluth.

Good food and a fun atmosphere. July 2012 update: I ate at the new Maya location the other day. The service was very good and quite friendly. I ordered the fajitas and they were quite good. The portions were great! I left feeling satisfyingly full. I look forward to eating there again.

Haven't been here since it moved, Yelp had good reviews so tried it. Food was OK, very generous helpings. Salsa not as great as claimed but not bad. Waiter didn't come back very often to check on us but that was OK - we were mostly talking.
