i always go by the "give it 2 trys"....ive bee to this place twice....i hate it. the place doesnt know what it wants to be. casual, or fancy fancy. very quite and strang inside. the wait staff is nothing special ....at all. of course the most important part the food......trying to be over the top silly apps and dishs. the taste is blah, and the prices....oh god the prices $$$. one of the worst places in hastings.

Greek pizza, excellent, give it a try. Quaint, experienced staff. Tasty menu senection. 1 drawback, all bottle beer's. Good selection of craft and macro, but expect bottles.

Menu looked great. I question the quality and attention to detail on food prep. Service was great.

We have been here a couple of times in the past few years. Each time has been descent food and friendly staff. Great for small family get togethers!

My mother has always liked this restaurant. Finally, I had a chance to go with her. This is probably the best restaurant in Hastings if you want something more than a burger. 1. The waitress was fabulous. She brought us water immediately and gave us time to review the menu. 2. The food was excellent. Mom had her usual, Chicken a Al King ($ 11.99). Lots of chicken and the pastry is extremely flaky. She loves the pastry. I love salads but most people make salads too fancy. My "WHO YA CALLING" CHICKEN? ($12.99) was perfect. The ingredients were fresh and there was plenty of chicken. 3. Really appreciated the environment. A bar is on the left and the dining room is on the right. This is one of the few places in Hastings where you could have a quiet drink without the usual bar noise. Some of my Hastings friends find this place "spendy" but I felt the prices were exactly right for the amount of food you receive. Plus, there are white tablecloths and cloth napkins - a sign of a owner who pays attention to detail. 4. We had a late lunch. My mother is 92 and the staff was very receptive to her needs. They provided us a table close to the door, next to the window. 5. The decor is nice and if you get a window seat, you can look out over the river. 6. My mother said she has been there for several special occasions which are held on the second floor, offering privacy. 7. I will be returning.

I come out here monthly for the Inn Crowd. The inn keeper recommended this place and I'm glad he did. It was a dreary, rainy night. Perfect night for comfort food. We started with house chips that are like nachos, but aren't. Also the bedeviled eggs were just right. A salad with an oddly sweet blue cheese dressing was next. A beef stroganoff kind of night. Thick curly que noodles, the most fork tender beef, and plenty of gravy, dollop of sour cream, gotta love that.My husband's steak wasn't the greatest, I always have a bite. They do have one marinated in coffee, that I'm curious to try. The furniture in the bathroom I wish I had on my porch. You'll find yourself looking up a lot to watch the train go around. Each car has a local advertisement. The Onion Grille is the caboose. I like how the place is on a separate block of its own.

Fantastic dinner tonight! Chef Jeremy really exceeded my expectations. Had the appetizer for 2 and the beef Wellington was my favorite. My entree was the chateau sirloin with lobster tail. Nothing short of exceptional!

First visit this w/e; I ordered the Continental French Dipper w/hand cut fries. The beef was served in chunks not typical slices of roast beef nicely seasoned on toasted hoagie roll, cheese or onions could be for added flavor. too much salt. Same for fries, too much salt ! The pickle was spotty & brown on the skin, unappealing. Some of the fries were black inside. My friend ordered Bacon cheese burger, nicely seasoned, but again too much salt. The service was good, although a bit confusing as we started with one waitress & then another, presume change of shift. The waitress should have communicated that to us or any party they serve. $30 + for lunch ( tip also). The water glasses didn't seem thoroughly washed, ring inside of glass. Great atmosphere, except hard back chairs uncomfortable. May try again, but if food is too salty, mediocre won't return for a third try.

Tried both lunch and dinner here based on their new menu and I finally do not have to drive all the way to the Lake Elmo Inn for some good Sea Bass or higher end dining in a casual atmosphere. This is a smart restaurant. A controlled menu, good chef and folks who are very smart about competition in a town loaded with those who simply want mass quantities of mediocre food. They are right next door to the VFW in downtown Hastings and as folks filled the parking lots for The Friday fish fry, burgers and fried foods over there, just as many higher end diners filled all the tables at The Onion Grill for Sea Bass, Trout, Steaks and Pasta. If your looking for local fried mediocre mass quantities of food there are many choices in Hastings. The Onion Grill however, is the only place to go in the local area for truly higher end dining. It's a far cry from the old Levee Cafe, and has been for some time, and new menu is outstanding.

Closed today, Sunday, 10/12/14? That is a dirty dirty lie. They are open and they are wonderful! I'm having the German Oktoberfest pizza and my hubby is having the pumpkin ravioli. Both are beyond expectations delicious. Don't miss this place!

Just finished lunch with the Onion Grill. The service was excellent and the food was very good. We had the french onion soup, philly cheese steak and french dip sandwich. Can't say enough about how great the quality was. I really recommend this place.

Been in twice now. Had the steak salad the first time and it was decent. Nothing too special. Last night had the pistachio crusted walleye on special. Served with veggies, potato and soup or salad it was certainly a meal. The walleye was fantastic and the crust was perfect. Other places will really go light on the pistachio but not here. Gave you a course ground so you could really taste it but didn't drown out the flavor of the fish. Will for sure be back.

Had the liver and onions and my wife had the shrimp and mac. I know you may think you might not like liver but then you have never had the Onions version. If is great. Staff is great and fast. We have been at the Onion several times and try something new. All is good.

Love meeting my Girlfriend here for lunch. Great food and beverages - plus inviting atmosphere to catch up! Staff has always been Top Notch!! Highly recommended.

Overpriced average food that was too salty. Slow service. For my burger I can think of a few different places I would rather go. The onion soup was NOT good.

I came for a event and the burgers where Very Rare and me and a guest could not eat them. I spoke to three different people that where catering it and they said they would bring out some well done ones, Well this never happened until the staff person starting clearing the plates. I requested to him that our burgers where too rare. He went to the kitchen area and requested we give up our plates to be shown to the cook for replacement. Waiting for the burgers, all of our other menu items where still there on the plate. The staff person said they would make more and later came out with two burgers for me and my guest to divide?? No condiments, and all of the food we had was thrown out due to the fact the event was over and this is how long it took for them to correct it. We where basically left with two dry burgers after a $30.00 bill. Literally it was two burgers in buns with nothing!!! I will never go there and I hope to file a complaint with the manager

The Onion Grille is a rare find with a diverse and balanced menu that provides many choices for an excellent meal. The food was delicious, the prices were moderate, the wine was excellent. Highly recommend it!

Very impressive for teeny tiny Hastings. Dinner for 3 of us, we all had a good time, good food, excellent service, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. Had to deduct 1 star for a few minor things (salty chicken, both Malbec selections were out of stock, "au gratin" potatoes were mediocre). But overall we had a delicious meal and will definitely be going back. Considering the limited options for a nice meal within about 25 miles in any direction, you can't go wrong with The Onion.

Poor Hastings has a lot of mediocre food. I'm sure much of my dissatisfaction can be attributed to my tastes, but I was nonetheless dissatisfied. The whole menu is pricy for the ordinary types of food they serve. Just because they spell grill with an 'e' at the end, they can tack on a few more dollars? Times are hard, and so I can try to overlook how stressed out the two waiters were when they got an unexpected lunch "rush" of about five groups of people. The food itself was just fine. I really don't enjoy salty food, and it seemed like my dish was overly salty. Looking around at the table, my companions' food looked just fine, as well, but perhaps not fine enough for the price. Overall, I suggest giving the place a chance. I think they need time to grow into their britches.

Really liked the menu - a lot if effort to have unique food. My husband got the Knife and Fork Burger, a new addition, that was an open face burger with mozarella cheese and marinara sauce and sausages on top. He loved it! I had the chicken a la king which was just like my mother made - wonderful comfort food. Service was perfect, restaurant is nicely decorated and a very enjoyable experience. .

Rainy evening in Hastings brought us to the Onion Grille. Excellent salmon, potato casserole, french onion soup. Will definitely try this again. Waitress was awesome, so full of fun and energy. Nice dinner.

Fantastic experience at the Onion Grille. There was a review in the newspaper, so we expected a bit of a wait. After ordering drinks at the bar, we went up to the second level to enjoy the drinks and watch the St. Croix River - what a view. Smooth martini and awesome cosmo! A simple, yet elegant appetizer of a cheese tray set the tone to a wonderful, casual, delicious meal. The signature wild rice and onion bread was great - it went real well with the cheddar on the cheese tray. Dinner was scallops. aspuragus, and gratin for me - hubbs has the pork, red potatoes, and aspuragus. The scallops were light and flavorful and the pork was fork tender. The potato/leek gratin was outstanding. We will be back again...something that I do not say too often!. Yeah for a wonderful local business!

Seriously a tasty place! The Onion Grille was recommended by a co-worker and she was right, this place is fantastic! Great food and atmosphere. Bar is clean and fun and the service is phenomenal. It's nice to find a locally owned restaurant with good food and good prices. It's located right by the Hastings Bridge in a beautifully updated historic building. I recommend the Scallop sliders! We'll definitely be back!

Absolutely incredible! Where to start? -- friendly, knowledgeable wait staff, relaxing setting, amazing food, great prices... I can't find a single flaw. My wife and I have been here twice and plan to come back again soon. The asparagus dip and bread appetizer blew out my taste buds. Luckily, they recovered in time for my entree -- the "Not-so-ordinary Bacon Cheeseburger" totally lived up to it's name. See, I'm a burger connoisseur. I say this without bravado or shame. I KNOW a good burger from a blah one. *** This was quite possibly the best burger of my life. *** Soft, warm bun with just a hint of crisp to the toasted inside layer, the generous portion of bacon was crisp but never crumbled, the patty was thick and moist, easy to chew and PACKED with flavor! I ordered mine with grilled onions and they just completed the dream-package. Not skinny, carmelized onion strings. These were thick, juicy yet completely grilled strips of onion. But that wasn't even all of it -- instead of fries I got their hand-made chips... paper thin fresh potato slices with a seasoning I will never forget. Un-(insert your favorite expletive)-believable. THIS is the burger that will ruin all future burgers for me. It's just sets the standard too high. So I will continue to tolerate lesser burgers until I make the trip out to Hastings again (soon). ;) (( PS -- I'm wondering ... did Bob H. go to a different restaurant and Yelped this one by mistake? ))

This is one of the newer restaurants in the town of Hastings, MN. We had dinner here as a part of my friend's bacehlorette party. The food was really good -- make sure you try their famous onion blossom. We shared 2 bottles of wine, the host brought the bride to be a free martini, and every dish that we tried at the restaurant was very tasty! I had chicken a la king, some tried some of their signature pizzas, and the special was steak topped with crab meat. Overall, a very tasty and delightful meal. They take reservations and adjust accordingly (they accommodated to us changing the reservations 2 times).
