Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This is a great addition to Excelsior. It currently holds my top spot. Lots of options on the menu and I think the prices are reasonable. Fun environment. They do need a tv or two in the bar area!

Yeahhhhhh!!!! Ok - I am breaking my new rule of waiting to review a newly opened restaurant until I've been there at least 2-3 times and revising the rule to include the caveat unless the first visit is so great I can't wait to share the experience. Well - that's exactly what happened last night at Victor's. It was day 2 of the official opening and this place already runs like a well oiled machine. It was quite busy but you never felt it because everyone worked together so effectively to ensure we had a great service experience from start to finish. Now to the food - we decided to try a mix of items including the beet salad, gnocchi and the squid ink lumache. The salad was delicious with a variety of poached beets set atop this really nice whipped ricotta. It was accented with candied walnuts and arugula and was a nice, light start to our meal. The gnocchi was amazing - I didn't think I would find a gnocchi I liked as well as the dish at Bar La Grassa but I would say the texture of this house made version was even better. It was served in a creamy sauce that made the dish very much a "comfort" dish fitting for the cold weather and it will be fun to see what they do with it in the spring/summer to create a lighter version. The squid ink lumache was excellent with perfectly cooked pasta in a lighter red sauce that had just the right amount of seafood and seafood flavor. All of the pastas are fresh/house made and offered in small (still very generously sized) or full sizes allowing you to sample a variety. It's like having a version of Broder's in the suburbs in terms of freshness and quality. We also had the chicken which I rarely order when I eat out because it is typically a boring and disappointing entree choice in my experiences. Not at Victor's. This chicken is beauty in simplicity and execution. The chicken breast comes seared to perfection with crispy skin and the meat was tender, juicy and flavorful. We ended with the chocolate cake for dessert which was tasty and just the right couple of tasty bites to wrap up the meal. I also love that they have (very reasonably priced) wines by the glass, half and full carafe as well as a nice variety of wines by the bottle. Overall, I think Victor's really got pricing right. It's not what I would describe as inexpensive but the menu design and pricing make it a place you would not hesitate to eat at on any weekday and even several times a week. I'm looking forward to trying other menu items and brunch sometime. Anyone who lives in or around Excelsior knows how deprived we have been of good restaurants and driving to a Minneapolis or St Paul to get our "fix" can get old. With the recent addition of Coalition and now Victor's Excelsior is officially on the food map!

What a let down, our reservation was for 7.15pm when we arrived we were told that our table was being prepared therefore one would assume that you would be seated within in 5 -10 minutes. 30 minutes later we were shown to our table which was located as close to the bar as possible without actually being in the bar. I for one do not enjoy dinning with someone else's purse and butt in my face or on my plate. We decided to leave before even ordering. We were told that no one else had a problem with the table and we could wait 20 minutes for another therefore total wait time of 50 minute from our reservation time. The manager at Victor' also couldn't careless about our experience and offered a hollow apology and had no issue that people were walking out of the restaurant. Very different to any restaurant that values return local business (especially as we are locals who eat out in Excelsior on a regular basis and were excited about the opening of a new restaurant) The owners should be made aware of the attitude. We decided to leave and we went to Coalition which always has a great atmosphere, welcoming and excellent food. Very Disappointing.

Came in for a 6 pm seating on a Tuesday night. Place was filling up rapidly, we had reservations. Had a window table for two. Agree with other reviewers when they say the tables are too close together. We overheard everything the couple next to us said and vice versa. Was awkward until both couples had some wine in them! The waitstaff was friendly and informative. He seemed to be very busy and forgot we'd ordered an appetizer. Okay, no big deal. The portions were reasonably priced. The food was good except a side of carrots and chickpeas were undercooked, bad enough to where I had to use a knife to cut the carrots. They were obligingly taken off the bill. I know what al dente pasta is and appreciate it, if this pasta had been taken out of the water a minute sooner it would have been undercooked. Flavors all in all quite good. Kitchen staff needs to sharpen up their execution. The menu overly pretentious in its wording.Victor's is a welcome addition to what has been a tired dining scene on Water Street.

Horrible. We went there for my son's 21st birthday and it was one disappointment after another. The food was less than mediocre and so was the service that night. I asked for bread 3 times and it never came, so I told the waiter that he never brought the bread, and he had the audacity to ask if I wanted some after our dinner (and desert) dishes were cleared. The spaghetti was nothing more than a small bowl of buttered noodles with chopped basil on top for 18 dollars. The shrimp and grits was the worst I had ever had. They should actually google a grits recipe as what they served me was small squares of cardboard with tomato paste with grilled shrimp. Never again.

Another great addition to the hugely popular town if Excelsior. Victor's offers delicious sophisticated dining - make reservations so you'll be sure to get a table. The lively , elegant atmosphere matches the sumptuous menu.

I have been here twice, once for happy hour and once for dinner. Here is my take. I love the wine on tap. The happy hour pizzas are fantastic and well work stopping in for a quick bite with friends. Dinner was another story all together. We sat down with another couple and the waitress comes up and ask for our drink order. The two guys had glasses of wine and the ladies ordered water. The waitress made the comment "well, looks like the guys are the only fun ones tonight." It kinda set the mood with a little childish peer pressure to push alcohol on the table. I ordered the scallops and the wife had a pasta which I can't recall and she didn't want to. The pasta was soaked in oil and didn't have a good mouth feel. It just felt like a mess in a bowl. The scallops on the other hand were really good. The atmosphere isn't the most welcoming vibe giving off in the place. It felt kinda cliche with the snooty hostess, surly cook staff and "rocking" bartender. The food is hit or miss depending on the rotating menu. You won't be wowed here but you won't be disapointed either.

Make sure to reconcile your credit card to your statement. I've given Victor's the benefit of the doubt 4 times in the last 2 months and have spent about $1000 on the 4 visits. None of the experiences have left me wanting more personally. Food is reasonable and some servers are hit and miss but my last experience and final experience with Victor's was today. It started earlier this week when I was reconciling my credit card statement and I noticed the charge from one of the last times I was in was off, not a big deal only $6.00 more than what I showed, but I had already left the bartender a $20 tip on $116 bill so I called the restaurant because I remembered the bartender from that night and he seemed a bit smarmy so my suspicion was more that this overcharge was intentional, looking at my copy of the receipt it showed a $20 tip and was subtotaled correctly. When I spoke to Matt, who I've talked to once before after witnessing the horrendous antics the valets put on, blocking street parking spots, ignoring guests to service ones they know better, opening the door for the driver but not the passenger, I let him know I thought it should be dealt with, his excuse, which he always seems to have one was they are subcontracted. In regards to my overcharge, I called in on Tuesday, I discussed the overcharge and asked Matt to pull the restaurant copy which surprisingly showed the same info I had, $20 tip, $136 subtotal, he claimed my 0 on the 20 was not complete but my total was accurate. I explained to Matt that it was not about the $6.00 but rather the feeling I had about the bartender and that I feel it was intentional, who's going to pick up on a $6.00 overcharge on a $136 bill, me since it was a business expense and I reconcile my accounts, do that to 100 checks and that's an extra $600, probably would not take very long. I asked Matt to text me a copy of the restaurant receipt, I never received it, so I called today and asked to speak to him, hostess asked my name which I gave, she came back on the line and said he was on the other line, I said I could wait, she said she would take my name and number, I did not trust I'd get a callback and said I could just hold, she then hung up on me. So as much as I have hoped for more good dining options in the western suburbs, Victor's will not be one for me. My recommendation, check your restaurant charges to your copy of the receipt.

I'm surprised by some of the poor reviews! I went to dinner with my husband and another couple on sat evening. The restaurant is beautiful! Very modern with some original elements of the building incorporated. We were greeted immediately and seated. The drink menu is fantastic with new twists on old cocktails. I had the French 75 which was excellent! Our server was attentive and informative, we were also checked in by management several times. Our plates were cleared immediately when finished can't say enough about the amazing service! The menu was a good size a nice amount of options without being over whelming. The duck pate was excellent, as was the spaghetti, short ribs and coconut creme pie dessert. A few of the other items we had were very good but those were the highlights. I am so glad to have this as an addition to excelsior! Fabulous restaurant!

Average, ate at Victor's last night. A very average italian restaurant that I will not rush back to. The pasta was pretty bland but I am comparing it to my favorite italian Rinata in uptown minneapolis which is fantastic. A little too formal for me inside.

Ok, went to dinner and sat outside at a table for two. Ordered a few drinks and enjoyed the outdoor weather. We ordered the baked brie, which was really good but the portion was pretty weak. For entree I had the steak and my wife had the king crab pasta. The pasta was a win but the steak had to go back as it was just not good at all. I have never returned a steak anywhere but this one had a paprika oil which was just fowl. avoid at all costs. waitress was fine with striking item but a major bummer for a 42 dollar steak. Not sure we will return. owner/manager was nice but settled for popcorn @ movies across the street.

My boyfriend said we should try Victor's on Water. I was impressed with the food and the service. We got a table right away. I was a little under dressed. Everyone seemed pretty dressed up. Our waiter was very helpful and answered all our questions. We had a delicious brushetta for a starter. Then we ordered the gnocchi with chicken that I thought was amazing. My boyfriend thought it was too rich. He had the pizza which he thought was ok. The owners came over and asked us how our meal was. I would go back again.

Very nice! Ordered appetizer at bar on a busy holiday Saturday and she thanked us for patience with special little drink. (Not necessary!) Entrees were amazing and service was top notch. Nice to have another quality place in Excelsior.

The highlight of the evening was the chocolate dessert which was absolutely delicious and generous enough for two to share. I'd go back for dessert but that's about it. The caesar romaine salad sounded wonderful but was terribly disappointing. It was mostly an uninspired hunk of romaine that was a head of lettuce sliced in half. The dressing was almost non-existent and tasteless so asking for more was not going to improve the situation. One of us had the 1/2 chicken which was tasty but small and certainly not worth $28. The salmon was very good but again - considering the portion size and ingredients, was pricey for what you got at $30. Not enough to bring us back

Fathers Day Brunch was very disappointing. Our server complained upon greeting us that she was the only server. Returned to repeat same comment. Slow to even get water. As we awaited our coffee we heard something break and a loud s***.Do you know what you want was our wait staff way of taking order. When asked if any special Fathers Day items, she said "No one tells me anything". I had received a notice that of Steak and eggs and unlimited bloody Mary's $20. She came back to us and said yes to that. We ordered and had broken eggs with almost raw steak and very fatty. She then came at end of meal and said twice she would return w/ coffee. Finally did and filled cup 1/2! And when bill came the Steak and eggs $20 and Bloody Mary $9. When I questioned this I was rudely told it was my mistake. Poor service, underwhelmed by food. Will not recommend or return!!

I was under-impressed by Victor's. It was a Friday night (Valentines Day weekend) and two of the favorite dishes were sold out (gnocchi and pappardelle). Given the occasion (Valentines Day), I had high expectations. I ended up ordering a pizza, which was good but nothing spectacular. I also ordered the broccoli/sausage side, which I would expect to be salty but not THAT salty. Also too much butter which made the dish very heavy. My boyfriend seemed to like the short ribs, though. I'm all about good service but our server really hovered over our table (the table next to us seemed to agree and they had a different server). Not to mention the tables are very close to each other which I don't like, especially for the price tag!

Was excited about this place after reading the Star Tribune write-up. Very disappointed with meal - food was bland and overpriced. We tried a pizza, two pastas and a desert. Forget this place and head to Bar La Grassa in Minneapolis. A lot better food and the bill will probably be smaller.

I thought the menu had a lot of variety. I had the spaghetti and it was phenomenal. My friends had pizza and the Gemelli. Our server, Ana, was very knowledgeable and willing to help give us some suggestions. The atmosphere was romantic, slightly overcrowded, but with the flavor of elegance. I am looking forward to returning.

This was such a shame to our Sunday night. I was hoping with the great location, and beautiful décor inside that the food would match what we were seeing. Not even close. Our waitress had literally no clue what anything on the menu was. No clue whatsoever. I am a lactose intolerant person, which is pretty common now a days. Any time I asked the waitress about what was in the food our response was "ummmmm. let me go ask the chef." I appreciate the fact she had enough courage to tell us she did not know what was in the food, but this was on about 4-5 dishes that she had to "go ask the chef." At one point, on a dish I was pretty confident was a red sauce, I wanted to double check and asked if there was cream or milk in the dish. The waitress named an item that was not even on the menu, and went to ask the chef, saying there was indeed milk in it. Finally, I asked about the one item that said DF next to it, and asked if I could substitute the puree for a red sauce. After our waitress said she did not know, and would need to ask the chef, she came back to tell me no, they could not substitute the puree but instead could give me a cheese stuffed ravioli. At this point I was ready to walk out the door considering she clearly was not listening that I cannot have milk, cheese, or any dairy. I ended up ordering the Cesar salad, that ended up not being eaten due to the fact the two "hard boiled eggs" that come with the salad had yolk that poured out of the egg. I attempted to move the eggs off the place, but the second I picked them up all the yolk came pouring out on top of my salad. The night ended with our waitress giving us a desert menu, which everyone else seemed to enjoy their desert, but of course she offered me gelato, and even though I know there is milk in gelato, she told me she would need to go ask the chef if there is milk in it, because she did not "think" there was. At the end of our night she attempted to joke with us saying "I am sorry, this is a new restaurant and these questions you are asking are really hard." Sadly, these are typical questions customers will ask when they have food intolerants, not to mention new or not, she should know her menu items.

Love the decor, nice upscale dinner place. If your looking to impress a date it just might do the trick, not much room for intimacy though and the food... well I'm sorry to say overpriced and honestly not that special. I wish I could say it was worth every $. But, it's truly not. Tip: Don't ask for the house wine. If you order a pizza or a mediocre pasta dish maybe $$. I'd say a good entree expect to pay $$$.
(3)Sabrina S.
The food here is great and tasty but the staff is not so great. They hardly make an effort to give any attention to the customer. During a slower time of the day (brunch on a Saturday), the beverages were forgotten and we would have to flag someone down to get anything done. Though the food is good, customer service is what will make me not come back.

Dining at Victors was a wonderful experience in every aspect! The food was delicious and served timely, even though the restaurant was at capacity. The experience was highlighted by our server, Brad. He was entertaining, welcoming and knowledgeable of the menu. Will definitely return!

This restaurant is fantastic. I wish I lived closer by to be able to visit it more, but alas I was only in town for a short while and was only able to visit it once. There are going to be things on this menu that many people are going to think, "what? How does that possibly taste good?" Trust me, it does!! As I understand it, the menu will be changing seasonally, so perhaps multiple trips are a good idea. We had the Focaccia Colabro for an appetizer, and what a way to start a meal. Ricotta, Eggplant, and Pickled onions - it just absolutely explodes with delicious flavor. We had the Keith Richards Pizza and the Pan Seared Scallops as a main course...the scallops were PERFECTLY cooked...not one second too short or too long, and the pureé was a perfect compliment. The pizza is a nice sized pizza, the carmelized onions with the sauce and artichokes just compliment each other perfectly. For dessert, we had the Chocolate cake and the White Chocolate Molten Cake...and seriously, I had to stop and ask myself, "who puts beets in a dessert??" Well, this cook did, and it's absolutely magnificent. The seating is nice, not too close, to other tables, the staff is very nice, introduced themselves, and knew everything about what we were ordering. It is going to cost you for this cuisine tho, and it's worth every penny.
