Honestly, I lived in Ely 22 years ago. Call me petty, but at that time I made VERY little money and it was a treat to get to go out. I ordered a 1/2 sausage and 1/2 pepperoni pizza. When I got the bill I was shocked that there was a charge to make a 1/2 and 1/2 pizza. I worked at 2 pizza places while in high school and I have ordered pizza from dozens of places in my life and never been charged extra for this. I questioned the server at the time and she stated this was the norm for them. I honestly haven't been back since then, nor will I. Seemed like they were nickle and diming customers. The Pizza Hut in town has always had quality pizza in a sit down restaurant. Not sure if there are other pizza option there now. I get up there once or twice a year now.

Basic Italian pizza, pastas & salads in downtown Ely. We had a long wait for our pizza. They work you in with their take out pizzas. Busy place.

First: pizza was terrific and service was excellent. See below: We were there with a party of 22 during a HUGE rainstorm when water drifted into the dining room from the parking lot outside. The staff calmly shuffled the affected tables to our section of the room while they stemmed the tide. Meanwhile, our server never skipped a beat with drink orders and quick food service. Hats off to all on staff ... see you again sometime.

Always one of my favorite stops in Ely, other than seeing my family. It's a classic Ely staple. Good food & good people!

Been here 5 times over the past few years the night before entry into Quetico. Everything has been good...huge portions, friendly staff. I usually get the Sir G's Special pizza. Heads up: the salad comes with A TON of cheese. Recommended.

The Worst Pasta I have ever eaten. I would have been better off opening up a can of chef boyrdee for the night. Out of 5 people the only person able to eat their meal was my dad who ordered the pizza. Being that I am from Chicago I consider myself some what of an Italian Food Expert. I have had Italian at numerous highly rated restaurants around Chicago and even in New York. I didn't even want to eat at Sir G's but my dad insisted on eating pizza. No disrespect but Sir G's is the only game in town so it's possible many locals don't have a good reference point to know what good Italian even is. Let's start from the beginning..... I ordered the Lasagna and it came with a salad. When the salads arrived they were literally brown wilted iceberg lettuce with huge pile of mozzarella cheese covering the whole thing. I think they were trying to hide the bad iceberg lettuce from customers thinking we wouldn't notice. When the Lasagna arrived it wasn't fresh and seemed to be haphazardly put together. There was big globs of hamburger meat and it didn't seem to be properly layered as I have had in other restaurants. My wife's pasta dish was loaded with too much pepper and that is all she tasted. My mom's chicken parmigiana was over cooked and very tough. My nephews spaghetti had cold noodles that they just placed hot sauce over thinking he wouldn't notice. Also, his meatball tasted terrible and had weird spices in it. Finally, my dad ordered the pizza which he considered to be good. I sampled a piece and it was just OK but nothing like home. Everyone that ordered pasta had only a few bites of their meal and we complained to the waitress. She took our complaints to the manager and he requested to see all of our plates. I am assuming he wanted to see how much of each meal we ate. We should of got a full refund on everything except the pizza but he sent the waitress back only agreeing to refund the chicken parmigiana. We left still unhappy because we didn't feel like getting in a debate with a restaurant manager on vacation. Sir G only survives because they are the only game in town and their pizza is decent. If you want to go to a good consistent restaurant then i recommend the Chocolate Moose or Boathouse Brewpub. I have been coming to Ely for years and never had a bad meal at either of them. It's safe to say I can't wait to get back home to eat some good Italian food and I will never forgive my dad for wanting to eat at this place.

This is a great place to eat, esp. before entering the BWCA. Their portion sizes are generous and the food is tasty. Price is more than reasonable. I recommend them.

My husband and I have been there just once, but we'll be back. When trying a new place we like to order a few different things to share so we can sample. This is a good place to do that. We started with a "small" antipasto salad, which has lettuce, artichokes, black and green olives, mozzarella cheese, and great vinegar dressing. And it's huge. It's clearly meant for 2-4 people to share. It was delicious and we ate so much of it that we had little room left for our pizza. He also wanted to try the onion straws, but what can I say about that? They're pretty much the same everywhere. The pizza had unbelievable crispy, chewy thin crust and delicious toppings. It's very casual, no dress code. Portions are generous. It's easy to find- if you're driving through Ely you'll see it. My only negative comment is maybe overly-critical. The waitress wanted to get our order right away, and we mentioned we had never been there before. She didn't ask if we had any questions about the menu or offer any recommendations ( something I always ask new customers as a waitress) but she was young. It's a good place.

Best pizza and Italian in town! I've been going here for almost 25 years and always look forward to coming back!

Good for pizza, not much else. It's a nice little family-run place, but don't come here expecting anything like real Italian food. The pasta servings are large, but rather bland with no herbs or spices, and the pasta was overcooked. The white sauce is thick and creamy, and the red sauce was fresh and tasty. The "panna" is a combo sauce, with a lot more white cream than red. I got the veal parmigiana, which was rather like a bland tasting veal(?) meatloaf smothered in red sauce and topped with cheese - overpriced and would not recommend. A relative got the veal saltimbocca which was basically the same thing plus a few random vegetables. Another person got the Italian sausage - but it also came in this meatloaf patty form (is this the northwoods Scandinavian influence or what?), and was not very sausage like... So that one is a no, too. The pizza my relatives got looked pretty good though. All in all, if I'm back in the area I won't be coming here again unless we want pizza - buyer beware everything else on the menu.

Good Italian food after a long day hiking, boating, or canoeing. We like the cannelloni and cappelletti, but friends always have pizza. Homemade stuff. Good food.

Really good pizza. I've never been disapointed at any pasta dish I've had and their home made cannoli are absolutely fantastic!

I've heard of the place on WEVE for years (have a Lodge in Buyck) and had to try it out. The pizza was very good, just had a bit of a problem keeping the ingredients from sliding off the crust. Would definetly like to try a different course!

We left the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness famished at the end of August. During the 30 mile return to civilization on the Echo Trail gravel road, several Minnesotans who were a part of our outing revealed one of the key aspects of any Boundary Waters trip, enjoying a pizza after emerging from the bush. We headed in to Ely with a tomato pie as our goal. A unanimous decision to by-pass the Pizza Hut franchise in pursuit of a locally operated business was egged us further down Highway 169. Upon the recommendation of a gas-station attendant we settled on Sir G's which was fortuitously placed less than a block away from the gas station. The restaurant itself is immersed in cheesy hand painted italian landscapes. We didn't look that deep in to the menu. The pizza was a marvelous thin crust in the party-cut (squares) tradition. The crust was amazingly delicious and crispy and was deceivingly light. I thought that the crust would not be able to hold the hefty toppings of our Sir G's Special of pepperoni, sausage green peppers and onions under an ample portion of provelone cheese. The pizza in conjunction with the Dorothy Motler Root Beer (an indigenous soft drink with a storied connection to the Boundary Waters) left us extremely satiated and smiling on the way out the door. Prices were within what to be expected. The service was friendly and helpful, but slow in taking our orders and retrieving our bills during an afternoon lull in business. If you are in the area, or emerging from the wilderness with hankering for some superior pizza I would encourage you to make a foray in to Sir G's for some exceptional small-town pizza. It was what we were hankering for and much more.

The best (and only) italian restaurant in the area. I have been eating here since the 70's , when they were across the street and served pizza till 1:00 am. All of the pasta is made in house, good but nothing exceptional. my only complaint is when ordering a pizza with everyting on it, you can't exclude items (I don't like green olives) because the toppings are premixed. I eat here everytime i'm in Ely. Several years ago, while dining here, I heard a youngster make the comment to her parents "I don't like this pizza-it's not like Domino's" I consider that tragic, for the parents and the kid. Thank God Ely doesn't have a McDonalds.

Staff was friendly. And the restaurant was clean. Several tables were locals and it sounded like they were enjoying their food. Pizza was good I would say average. I would try it again maybe having something different or a different type of pizza. Salad looked good.

I'd rather eat a frozen pizza then the grease bomb they serve. Bottom line. Go catch some walleye!! Over priced big time.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
