Great for breakfast- it's a must when we come in town for vacation. The stuffed hash browns are the bomb. The local staff is always friendly and quick. Definitely a local place which is cash only but if you want a great big breakfast this is the place for you.

I thought the beef patty tasted funky. It tastes like a frozen beef patty from wherever. I hope that small town cafés use fresh ground beef. No luck.

Great little breakfast joint. The stuffed hash-browns were very tasty! The other yelpers weren't kidding when they said the portions are big. The only down side is they only accept cash, as a business traveler I prefer to use the compnay card when I travel. Other than that it's a good way to strat your day.

While on vacation with my girlfriend, we were told by many locals to go eat breakfast at Brittons. We were both so happy we did!!! My girlfriend had the chicken fried steak, which I've had at many many places before....but never had it so perfectly cooked and so tastey! I had the stuffed ham and cheese hashbrowns, and they were to die for! Never had anything like them before. The portion size was HUGE!!! I ate and ate and it felt like I couldn't make a dent in my meal. We shared a fresh out of the oven cinnamon roll, and quickly saw why we were told to get them fast before they are gone. From the food, to the portion sizes, and the amazing service, everything at Brittons is top notch. We are very thankful that out friendly VFW bartender, Wendy, really urged us to go there.

You cannot leave there hungry. Fast and friendly service with huge portions. Do not leave without having a cinnamon roll! My only dislike was they don't take credit cards.

Food was not very good. We had burgers and the meat had a funky texture and flavor. Definitely some type of frozen cheap patty.

A greasy spoon for the locals, and potentially awkward if you're not one of them I recently visited with my partner upon recommendation from some Ely locals. The minute I walked in, I'm sure this small town of 3500 realized that we weren't locals and everyone dining turned around to stare. Once they noticed me as an ethnic, non-Ely resident they decided to stare for a bit longer. After getting seated, it subsided, but I got the general impression that I was a bit of a curiosity as if I had rode in naked on a horse - something I had not experienced at any other place during my stay in Ely. My partner ordered a breakfast burrito and I got scrambled eggs with ham. The portions were incredibly generous and well-cooked. There must have been 5lbs of potato hash-browns and the scrambled eggs were equally generous. Prices were very fair and service was quick. Echoing what others said, just be sure you have cash - there's a small sign to that effect on the counter but it's easy to miss. Three stars for the heaping helping of awkward turtle.

Our favorite breakfast place in Ely! We've come here literally for years-- they know us and our kids, and we've gone through a whole family of waitresses. I usually have the number 7 (eggs, American fries, and bacon), but Katie raves over the stuffed hash browns! Also fond of the homemade rolls! Great spot to fill up before a canoe trip or for family breakfast.

Come hungry! A must try for anyone coming thru Ely--they will fill you with fuel for the day if you plan to do some paddling :-) Great cafe open daily from 5am-2pm. Extra large portions at a fair price--easily splittable. They are also known for their fresh baked goods, which sell out early. Breakfast is always good and the cheeseburger was super flavorful. My sister and I visit every year for a week in the summer and we always stop in at least 2x--diet or no diet. My dad comes up for the month of July and he has been coming to Britton's since it was Edna's in 1952!

Great local place to fill up before shipping out. Tried the rice pancakes (which I was hesitant about), but they were excellent. Restaurant was busy, but staff were friendly. Bring cash or check, as they don't accept credit cards.

Every year when we come to Ely for a BWCA/Quetico trip, we eat at Brittons for breakfast both before and after the trip. We're never disappointed. The breakfast is outstanding and reasonably priced. Staff is attentive, though busy. They open at 5am, which is just the right time to get there before hitting the water to fish or paddle. My favorite dishes are the cinnamon buns, stuffed hash browns, and biscuits&gravy.

Perhaps it's due to limited grill space, but I'm baffled by a restaurant that is said to be known for their breakfast, yet stops serving pancakes at 11 AM. I was seated at 10:45 AM so I'd have hoped to have my order taken in time for their 11 AM "Pancake Deadline", but no luck.

Fantastic breakfast spot. Fast, friendly service, more than reasonable prices, big portions, great quality. My coffee cup was always full, and they handled a table of nine perfectly. Can't complain about a thing. Just awesome.

If I need an early breakfast, Brittons is where I'll go (open at 5am). Their stuffed hashbrowns are where it's at! Seating is limited but the food's worth the wait! Awesome glazed donuts too, just like Vertin's used to have!

Asked a couple of the locals where to eat and they all said, without hesitation, Brittons...so the next morning we had to try it. Very good breakfast. Nothing fancy, just simple food but they do it right. Just as we were about to leave I saw a server carry out a tray of fresh donuts...a sign that you have to order one...so we did. Yum. Service was good. Cash only.

My Dad goes here every time he visits the Boundary Waters and this year I joined. Brittons is a very basic breakfast and lunch spot, though I've only been there for breakfast. It's very clean and service is fast. Seat yourself and don't be concerned with the locals at the counter staring you down. I had the frenchtoast, which was delicious. Since we were heading out for a week in the canoe wilderness area I thought about getting eggs as well. I'm glad I didn't because my dad's scrambled eggs looked a little too runny for my tastes (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). The servers were quick, knowledgeable and polite. Pay at the register on the way out.

Classic local diner in a small town. Perfect for fueling up before a long trip to the boundary waters. Have huge baked rolls that would be a meal all in itself.

Been eating here for many years. Great place, good food, good service. It is my favorite lunch place on Ely.

Great breakfast! BIG yummy pancakes, delicious hashbrowns, bottomless coffee. You will not leave hungry! Friendly service. Just remember that they take cash only. The donuts are amazing - HUGE!

I'm not sure why, but one of my favorite things about Ely is the fact that when you turn your radio dial to WELY: End of the Road Radio, you hear the lunch specials for Brittons. It's just fitting. This place is a classic country diner, so don't expect anything different when you visit. It gives you a pretty good feel for life up in the Northwoods, though. Oh, and it's cheap. Oh, and they'll serve you a hot, open-face turkey sandwich covered in gravy. Tastes like home. Side note: check out End of the Road Radio if you're in Ely - and get the backstory from some one. It's... bittersweet.

When you are traveling, there is nothing better than a great breakfast to start your day. I went here based on recommendations from the locals, and that I like the local cafes and diners for breakfast. I was not disappointed. I had the Denver omelet with hash browns. Excellent food, large portions and really good service. Luckily, I must have timed my arrival, 8:00am, I was seated right away at the 'local counter', but it did fill up quickly with people waiting for tables. Only disappointment, no tomato juice, they had ran out and the HB are a la carte. A bit spendy $14 for a breakfast when everything adds up, but worth it for me.
(4)Paul H.
My favorite breakfast spot in Ely. Small home town diner with lots of locals sitting at the counter. Portions are large and prices are reasonable. Try the blueberry pancakes-HUGE and packed with lots of berries in every forkfull. Bet you cant eat the whole thing. If this were Mayberry, Andy and Barney would hang out here.
(4)Darin H.
Good food. Huge portions. Cash or check only.
(4)David S.
Great breakfast. One block off the main drag and supposedly a favorite of the locals. This is a no-nonsense breakfast spot. Great taste, big portions, reasonable price and friendly service.
(4)Trent M.
The local answer to breakfast in the tourist focused town of Ely, Britton's provides no nonesense breakfasts from 5am-2pm every day. The specials are huge and well priced, the only thing I have had that I didn't love was the country gravy. I make it a point to stop by everytime I am in town.
