Great breakfast stop. Stuffed hash browns are packed with all your favorite foods: eggs, veggies, cheese. Good smoothies and a variety of french toast and pancake options. The coffee is so-so. We enjoyed skimming some of the loaner books about Ely offered up at yhe checkout counter.

The food was adequate; we had the French toast and blueberry pancakes. The service was horrid; they had a trainee working the register, who should not have been left on his own. We had to repeat our order twice and still half of it was missed. The waitress was not apologetic. The end, the owner decided to come our breakfast. Although, he handed my credit card to my husband.

The wait staff there is non existent. Apparently, you have to be a regular to actually get any attention whatsoever. The place wasn't even busy to make it worse. The food was ok, but overpriced for the lack of service that should come with it. skip this place on your visit.

Stopped in today for the first time. Immediately was told we couldn't have pancakes, smoothies or Frappes. We asked why no blended drinks and were told they couldn't staff for it. We inquired what the berry beverages were, either water with berries or tea. I asked if the blueberries were frozen or fresh, the response was, "I hate that question because all frozen berries are fresh." I asked, do you take them out of the fridge or freezer? Response, "I don't know how it is prepared." We so wanted to like this place. We come up to our Ely cabin many times during the summer. Really wish this was a place we could come back to.

A Taste of great food! I loved the Hippy dish, shredded potatoes and great ingredients. But no matter what! you have to get the wild rice bread. It is so fabulous, I nearly gave up my diet to eat another slice. You will love it. We had breakfast there twice, and both days were excellent. Good coffee and friendly service, too.

Only open 7am-3pm but GREAT food for breakfast or lunch. Diverse menu, comfort food, great atmosphere. Free with-fi (which is hard to come by up here) and books at the table to write your comments or things you've seen and done in Ely.

"We're out of clean glasses, so I'll only bring you water if you really want it..." And so began our two and a half hour lunch saga at The Taste of Ely. Our party of six waited about 30-40 minutes to be seated on an admittedly busy weekend, hoping that the crowd was a better indicator of this place than the previous Yelp reviews. Lesson learned, guys...never doubt your fellow Yelpers... After finally getting a table, and being informed of the water glass shortage, it didn't take long for us to figure out that it wasn't just their dishwasher who was running behind....they were also out of non-diet Coca Cola, pickles, and guacamole. We had to wait for coffee saucers, napkins arrived in a heap of (thankfully) freshly-laundered linens (sans silverware, that came about 15 minutes later), and nobody seemed to know where the extra toilet paper was (or how to load it into the dispenser). Knowledge about the menu also seemed to be in short supply, as our waitress described their featured Finnish special as "white-looking, with some meat that is...white-looking" (although, as you can see in the picture below...she wasn't too far off base...) Once our food finally did come, it was good (with the exception of the pale-complexioned special)---but definitely not worth the nearly three hours we spent playing, "What will they be out of next?" On a more optimistic note, however, the owner/manager did seem genuinely concerned over (and apologetic for) our experience---so hopefully, once this place has a few months under it's belt, things will start to shape up. Until then, I'd skip it unless your looking for ways to burn an afternoon (sans Coke and TP, of course...)

This is a great new family restaurant. It's a very cozy Ely feel. Plenty of large tables for big groups as well as small ones tucked in the corner if you just want to have a coffee and surf the internet. The walleye and wild rice are fantastic! I heard potica was being added to the menu soon too. Can't wait to come back and get dessert next time.

Last summer.... We went there and stood at the counter and was ignored. Matter of fact, we were the only ones waiting to be seated. There wasn't even a person at the counter to even seat us. The wait staff just walked past us and didn't try to assist us in any way. At the very least, they should have acknowledged us so we felt welcome. What makes this worse is the place wasn't even busy. We left....THE END!

I had an excellent breakfast at A Taste of Ely this morning with my husband. This was our first trip to Ely and we enjoyed the hospitality and good food. What a cute restaurant with great food! The cranberry wild-rice bread is a must, I just wish they sold a loaf to go. Finding a latte in Ely was also a pleasant surprise. Gordon was very nice and helpful, his service was excellent. He also took the time to give us recommendations for other businesses in the area. I look forward to coming back to Ely in the summer and will make sure to eat at A Taste of Ely again.

This place is awesome. I had the artichoke sandwich and my husband had the garden lake turkey sandwich. They were both yummy so we topped it off with a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie & a side of ice cream. We asked for a box for the pie because we were so full but ended up eating the whole thing anyway because it was so good. I can't wait to go back on a Tuesday and try the apple potica!

Pleasant, but underwhelming My partner and I stopped in for brunch on a Sunday and were surprised to one of the few diners there. I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of bacon but was a bit surprised to find the bacon inside the burrito instead. Also, I'm a bit of a bacon lover and was disappointed to because I made it through half of the burrito before finding a piece. Granted, there was nothing wrong with either the food or least of all the service, but I found the food to be something I could have easily made myself as in there wasn't a lot of special food prep or seasoning evident. I also wanted to try the baklava-like apple potica, but they were all out that day. I would have been happy if the food was even half as good as the service.

Went here for lunch during Memorial Day weekend 2012. Typical cafe menu with some local favorites and a bit more upscale dinner options, including wine and beer. Breakfast until 11am Mon-Sat and noon on Sunday. Also does take-out. Food was slow getting out and there were a few minor things wrong with our orders, but I think this place just opened and this must have been the first really busy weekend this year, so I'll give them a break, especially because the waitress was helpful and corrected the errors quickly. The food and coffee were good.

I remember this same building before it changed into "A Taste of Ely" and it was always too crowded and the way it took orders was weird. But now it has a new owner and a better way of distributing the service. The waitress was great at making sure we were satisfied with our meal and made sure our drinks were always full. My father and my girlfriend had sandwiches which were really good and were presented well. I had a hot sandwich, the mashed potatoes were creamy and the gravy was really tasty. I cleared my plate. My mom wasn't too hungry so she ordered a shake. It was one of the best shakes I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this restaurant for a great and quick lunch while in Ely. Can't wait to go back here!

We ate here twice in two days. Both days the service was terribly slow. We finally got up without our check the second time. Long delays and endless waits for our checks both times. It seemed like the wait staff was very inexperienced. Avoid the Reuben soup unless you have a very high tolerance for lots of salt. I couldn't finish mine. The hot chocolate was scrumptious and hit the spot on a cold rainy day. The hamburger was a bit better than average, probably because the menu advertises grass-fed beef. My partner liked both sandwiches she ate. The green salad was unremarkable but ingredients were fresh. Nice looking spot with tons of activities to keep the kids busy. You'll need them.

Food was simply ok. We were hoping to have lunch however it is not served until noon on Saturdays, although this is not consistent with what the menu stated.

The logo design in the restaurant is striking. It's tastefully done and it just pops off the wall, literally! Anything with the applewood bacon is absolutely yummy and it made my simple BLT a scrumptious delight. Get rid of those nasty tortilla chips! Plain and right out of the bag; it doesn't go with the homemade theme at all. The stories the guests wrote in the notebooks on the tables was such a cute touch; people are so creative in their picture drawing and poetry writing. I also hit their book rack and perused through that during my wait which I thought was pretty cool to have available; I caught up on Ely history. Love the homemade desserts. I took home extra chocolate chip cookies and blueberry scones. Mmm Mmm good! The servers are young and would do well to slow down and not look so hurried. It's one thing to be busy but composure is everything! For example, she was asking me how my meal was but her mind and thoughts were on something else as she was already walking away before I could even repy! The restaurant is new (est. 2012) and I believe with a few tweaks, it would be most superb! Great job and I look forward to coming back in a year or so to see the progress.

The food is excellent! I ordered the chandler house club which is so good. The service was a little slow but it's worth the wait!

We ate breakfast here every day of our four days in Ely. My wife called it "the best breakfast" she ever had. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration.... But it is definitely a great place, and everything we had was prepared just right. The hash browns were actually crispy instead of soggy and greasy... The oatmeal stood up on its own instead of being watery. Tomorrow we'll check out the pancakes...

We enjoyed a very good breakfast buffet on an end-of-season Sunday. Good food and a laid-back atmosphere.

I stopped here on family vacation -- I loved the food, especially the Slovenian Meatball Sandwich. The atmosphere with all of the Northern Minnesota artifacts was very cozy and welcoming. It's great that there is such a long history attached to the place. I know this place just opened and will continue to grow. I'm very much looking forward to coming back here next year on my family vacation. Maybe this will become an annual tradition?
