Good food is most important, but what makes a 5 star is the atmosphere and management/service. This place is amazing! Loved everything about the bar and patio. Loved our food. See photos of veggie pot pie, mac n cheese, pulled pork sandwich and chocolate cake. It got busy and there were some glitches in our service, but the staff couldn't have handled the situation any better. They were connected as a team and helped each other out, including the manager. This made it a great atmosphere to be in, aside from the cool decor. I loved how they are thinking of the environment with their recycled paper go-boxes and nifty water facets in the bathroom that also dried your hands. Cool! Of course the sign between the bathrooms that read "Men to the left because women are always right" made me smile. :) Super cool place! No matter what you will have a great time and eat good food. Can't wait to go back!

Where do I even begin with this place. Took a girls trip up to Duluth and used yelp to find a place to eat. Found Tavern on the hill so we decided to give it a try. Its in a newer development area with plenty of parking. There were a total of 6 girls, we walked in and there was no hostess or anyone in site. The place wasn't too busy but steady. We stood in the front for about 5 mintues with no one in site and no one greeted us. FINALLY a hostess comes up and says Hi how many, we tell her 6 and she looks at one of my friends and says, do you need a kids menu? Not sure if that was rude or a compliment but shes 26 years old. We then asked her if it were happy hour. She said she doesn't know when happy hour is or if they even have one..Wait WHAT? How do you not know anything about your restaurant but you work here..stupid girl. We get seated on the patio outside. Hopeing to have a better experience it only gets worse. The waitress SUCKED! We didn't get any water refills, she didn't ask how our food was or how we were doing. We were there for a good hour and probably only saw her to place our order and then when our food came out. AFTER we pay our bill and tip her she decides she wants to be super friendly smile and ask how our meal was. She didn't deserve that good of a tip but we wanted to see if she would be nice after she got paid and YUP she was so friendly and wanted to know if we neede antyhing else...NO we are done eating, Where were you when we needed refills on our drinks? where were you when we needed more napkins because the wings were messy? The fun doesn't stop there, We decided to go to the bar for a shot. We literally stood there for 15 minutes!! Not ONE bartender said hi smiled or anything. Ok now I understand we are asian and but must we be this racist? You can help the white man next to us but not bother to ask us if we needed anything? NEVER COME TO THIS PLACE, HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! They don't deserve a star at all!

From the moment our party of 8 walked in, the experience was 5 star. Our server Paige made great recommendations. We started with the fried crispy creamy avocado appetizer as well as the pub pretzels and ahi tuna crisps. They were all excellent. For dinner I had the Lake Superior whitefish with the smashed cauliflower. The fish was light and flaky and cooked perfectly. The piccata sauce was as good as I've ever had and the smashed cauliflower was so good I wanted a second helping!! Our table also raved about the Tavern Cioppino, Grecian tacos, midnight Cubano sandwich and the Cheesehead pizza (for our vegetarian) hit the spot just right! We also had a five year old who is gluten sensitive but it wasn't a problem finding a delicious meal for her ~ she loved (devoured!) Shea's Mac n' Cheese with the gluten free noodles! Prices were great, service extraordinary. Can't wait to go back!

We absolutely love Tavern on the Hill. Recently, I won a contest that included some amazing gifts from TOTH including a gift card, comfy t shirt, and awesome hoodie! Thank you, TOTH, for your generosity! We'll be back soon for your awesome drinks and delectable eats!

Great "new" (to us at least) restaurant in Duluth. Greeted and seated promptly. We started with blood orange lemonade (to die for). I had a Cuban sandwich and hubby had jalapeno burger. My sandwich was excellent! His burger was not as spicy as it could be. A whole chile was on top of the burger (you could choose to add it or eat it whole if you wanted). That was kinda weird. He said the burger was delish but not as spicy as led to believe. We got a pizza to go, taking it to our hotel room to heat up in the microwave for dinner. It was yummy. Can't wait to go back!

The first full service restaurant to open at the site of the old Woodland Junior High is called "Tavern on the Hill," and is part of the local Blackwoods hospitality group. The debut also marks the opening of the first full bar within staggering distance of the campus. The restaurant touts its locavore connection, sourcing as much locally as they are able to, (which really doesn't explain items like ahi and North Atlantic Salmon) and offer a very diverse menu of sandwiches, pizza, flatbreads, full plates, tacos and "sushi" (designed for the Duluth palate). Several menu items are new to the area, including fish tacos and dishes with bison meat. A small 'market' just inside the door of the restaurant offers take-away menu items, prepared and packaged to go. They have 'one of the best tasting burgers experienced in a long time, crowing about the quality of the meat. Servers offered the burgers in one of two modes: "pink" or "not pink," and the kitchen obliged. Craft cocktails and beers are available, and the restaurant is open daily at 11AM, closing at 1 AM, except Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 AM.

Okay seriously maybe my visit was a one off, friendly staff, super busy...went for just the Ahi Tuna wonton appetizer and a beer...very disappointed! The pictures are far from accurate! Ahi tuna was cold to room temp, thin and did not taste seared at all. A drop of wasabi/sour cream must mean a dollop at Tavern on the Hill! The wonton was so over fried that one fell apart and a piece of tuna fell onto the ground as I tried to eat it. When I was asked how I liked it, I said I was not too impressed and the waitress said that they weren't a sushi place...I protested that they do have sushi on their menu and she said that they weren't known for their sushi...just a side note here, I get that they may not have a Sushi Chef on staff in Duluth...but if you put something on your menu, please know how to prepare it! There is a great recipe on simplyrecipes.com for seared ahi tuna...might be worth a look! Oh and I guess no one listened to Kristine P's review 28 days ago...should have checked Yelp first! From others I have talked to the draw of the place is it's varied menu, burgers, closeness to UMD and it's trendiness. Maybe my experience was a one off and I should give it another try and stay away from the Sushi!

I love the diversity of the menu!! Very interesting and creative selection! You can't find anything else like this in Duluth. I love the avocado tacos and the pizzas! Great beer and drink selection to go with all that good food ;) AND don't forget about the atmosphere. Incredibly nice inside, clean and the best customer service.

Came here for lunch on their opening day. The place is absolutely huge! Sat in a 4 season porch area during a beautiful Duluth day. Our server Abbie was awesome and the food was great! Only bad part of it was having to wait about 30 minutes to get our checks. This was due to the computer system crashing, opening day problem I can deal with. Great food and a VERY good looking staff!

Wonderful to have another choice of eateries in the UMD/Hunter's Park/Woodland area. The fried avocado here is not to be missed. Different and delicious!

I went back to Tavern and had a menu item that I LOVED. This time, despite being skeptical, I had the tacos with fried avocado and those were to die for (then again, avocado, fry batter, acidic slaw... how can you go wrong?). The service was also fantastic this time. Our server, Alex, was energetic and friendly. He clearly knew the menu and answered my questions confidently. Overall, through, same reaction as last time... I want to go back to try more items! I would like to seek how they handle more meat and seafood given my experience with the shrimp tacos last time.

I have, now, had two experiences both of which I will share: 1) Late(r) eve (9:10pm) on a Tuesday, arrived to a live music performer in the bar but just wanted to chat with my friend as I just pulled into town after 2 years absence. Manager willingly let us sit in the closed dining room, staffed us with a wonderful waitress and we ate appetizers which were all amazing (beer cheese soup, pub pretzels, cheese curds all to die for). Great experience. Easily 5 stars. 2) Tonight, called ahead asking if I could make a reservation for my family. Was told, "no need, tons of space" arrived (10 mins later) to a 25 minwait. I get it, you can't predict a rush. Asked about it and they immediately sat us. Awesome! Our three small, starving children appreciated it!!!! Server great. Husband ordered alcohol "infused" lemonade which has such a minute amount of alcohol, its pointless. Also, I ordered a Tavern Margarita also incredibly weak. When asked what we thought, we kindly (please read - we were NOT complaining, the server asked multiple times for feedback) explained they were weak. The manager came over and asked. We said the same thing and said "its ok, we aren't complaining" and he said OK and walked away....very confusing considering he made the effort to come over, investigate and even shrugged when I explained about the margarita.....bewildering. My daughter ordered the kids sushi (veggie) and then, minutes later, told it was no longer sold as of 3pm today....it was 6. Ummm, really? It's on the menu and you had some 3 hours ago?! But now its gone? Then I got my cioppino and it was mostly broth and tons of broken mussel shells. I tried diligently to fish them out but it was impossible. I stabbed myself multiple times. I didn't say anything because I was really done and my experience with the manager's feedback loop was pretty lack luster about the drinks. Listen, the joint is packed. They've got awesome servers and notably courteous hostesses who accommodate amazingly...order tavern food and you'll be good. Entree portions are incredibly small for the money they are asking....especially for Duluth. 15+ for a ton of broth, 3 shrimp, a bunch of shredded white fish, 3 mussels and a ton of mouth stabbing, tooth breaking shells is insanity! And a dribble of alcohol per drink, so you remember the whole event.... BLAH!!!! My first outing was cheese curds, nachos, pub pretzels, a burger with cup of soup for under 40. This time it was too ridiculous to even share.

I've been to Tavern in the Hill several times. The food is usually pretty good and there is a lot to choose from. I also like that they have a nice selection of NA cocktails that are very refreshing in the summer. The last few times I've been here though, the food service was painfully slow. I came here for lunch today and had an hour, so my husband and I sat at the bar and placed our orders right away. The bartender put them in immediately and he was very friendly. Our food did not come out until more than 40 minutes later. That's just not acceptable during the lunch hour (or really, any time). To make matters worse, my tacos were cold and not how I had ordered them. Our server corrected that right away and again, he was great. But the kitchen needs to learn to be more efficient. I can't see coming back here for lunch as this was not the first time this has happened. Be sure you have plenty of time if you choose to eat here.

Absolutely amazing all around. Me and my hubby dined in at the bar about 930 pm and I could tell they were still super busy! Our server Hallie greeted up promptly and got our orders as soon as we were ready. She was super friendly and catered to us even after we paid out. Service is definitely five stars all around the restaurant. It only took about 15 minutes for us to get our food!!! I would recommend to everyone that you visit the restaurant after the dinner rush to get the best experience. If you've ever worked in the restaurant business you should know better than to go to dinner at 6 o'clock at a brand new restaurant and get top notch service. Over all the food was great I got a quinoa bowl full of flavor!!! And my hubby got the tavern burger and he said it's the best burger he's ever had and he's definitely had his share of burgers! Enjoy!!!

We went there for the first time this week and LOVED it!! The menu is great, there's a wide variety of drinks, and the bar atmosphere is fun and welcoming. Try one of their homemade moonshine. This is a much needed change that Duluth needed.

Food is good but it's kinda pricey and although the servers and bartenders are attractive, the service wasn't great. The bartenders are pleasant but I was sitting in front of two of them for 20 minutes.

It couldn't have been worse. It was their grand opening so I understand some mistakes but every order at our table was wrong and no one enjoyed the food. Give this place a few months to work out the kinks.

We first went here on a Friday evening and sat at the bar. Great decor and nice building. Cool juice bar and sushi to go in the front area. We sat at the bar and ordered martinis, import beer and their homemade moonshine drinks. All were fabulous and the bartender who was one of the assistant managers was awesome. They have warm blankets by the patio door for those that want to sit by the bonfire. They also have lots of propane heaters outside too. We decided to go back on Saturday for a late lunch and it all went downhill from that point. Blake was our server and he had a hard time delegating his time at each table. We had to flag down another server to finally get us some drinks, go get a rag from the bar to clean our own table and go back to the hostess station to get a kids menu. We all ordered, 1 arriving 10 minutes later so ordered 10 minutes after us (5 in our group). I needed sweetener for my drink and Blake was MIA, again, so I went to the bar to get sweetener. Our food came for 3 of the 5 of us which was odd we didn't get it for the 4 of us that ordered first but we figured the rest would be there shortly. The food for our friend came (the one who arrived late) but still nada for my husband. Apparently Blake assumed silverware and napkins weren't needed since none of us had any! He was kind enough to bring us 3 after we asked for some.......5 people at table, simple math skills, uum??? My older son had ordered a starter salad that we had to ask for 3 times and it finally came after he was done eating his juicy lucy and fries. So much for the "starter" theory. That got thrown out, waste! He also had to ask twice for his honey mustard that he had asked for when he originally placed his order. Two of us got the supposed beer cheese soup which is more like chunky cream of bland vegetable soup. It didn't taste like cheese or beer and was way to chunky and had a curdled texture, ish. None of us liked it. The stuffed mushrooms were bland and once again really chunky and dry. I took them home in an attempt to jazz them up a bit. Hello garbage can! Everyone was done eating and my husband still had no main dish. Blake came by and said he'd take his pizza off the tab which was nice but at this point we were all just laughing at the clown show going on around us. We probably had a minimum of 6 different employees deliver items to our table which a couple of them would get confused as to which table they were dropping the food off at so we'd watch them wonder around. Clown show! My husband finally got his pizza after we were all done and the funny part is that it was quite a bit smaller than my son's pizza that he ordered from the kids menu, whaaaaat? The pizza sauce is homemade and tastes like tomatoes and nothing else. It was okay but nothing great. Nothing on our tiny table was ever cleared (until the very end when we asked Blake to grab a couple things) so I kept putting stuff on the bar behind us because we had nowhere to put everything! The best part is we noticed the booth next to us had left their nice handbag behind. When pointed out to Blake, he laughed and said "5 second rule right" and he walked away!!! We think he meant we can steal it after 5 seconds had passed, aaah what, clown show! I was in shock so I grabbed the expensive leather handbag with what I think had a laptop inside because it weighed a ton and I gave it to the hostess station. Upon leaving I noticed the gal I handed the handbag to was sitting in a booth enjoying a lovely salad and the paper. I looked at the hostess station when leaving and saw the handbag sitting on the floor for anyone to just walk over and grab! Don't leave anything behind since they clearly don't give 2 fashizzles about your stuff! I'd go back for drinks only if we can sit at the bar but never again for any kind of meal. I should also mention that I had gone up to the bar for like the 3rd time and asked for a refill on my son's drink since he was eating a juicy lucy with zero beverage since Blake went MIA, again, so the bartender asked who my server was and after I told her, she said she'd be talking to someone about him. She even noticed the lack of service! Drinks, yes. Food, nope! Sorry for the tiny tip Blake but you're lucky you got anything!

I was in town visiting family so we visited for lunch. Even during lunch on a weekday the place was very busy but it's big so it wasn't a problem to get a table. I got the kale salad, my mom got the burrito bowl and my boyfriend got the mac and cheese so that tells you the variety on the menu - which to me is a good thing! I liked my kale salad well enough but I did feel like something was missing. It had chicken, wild rice and cranberries but it needed something else. Croutons or something. Maybe because the wild rice didn't really add much in the way of flavor. It was good but not amazing. My mom really liked her burrito bowl. It's similar to Chipotle in concept but the rice was more seasoned - like what you'd get at most Mexican restaurants. But she loved it and it was big enough she even brought home leftovers. The service was nice and attentive and overall there was a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. This is a great addition to Duluth, and especially to this neighborhood.

Good but not great. The first time we are there, the sweet potato burger was amazing. Today it was bland like they didn't put the special sauce on it and it wasn't cooked completely as some parts of the potato were still firm. The service today was subpar. The waitress rarely checked on us.

The Tavern is one of our favorite places to go on Tuesday date nights (there are even candles on the tables for mood lighting). I love the atmosphere if the restaurant - all of the little details like their fixtures and artwork really come together. The menu is well rounded with a variety of food ranging from pasta, burgers, wood fired pizza, sushi, to fruit and protein shakes. If you don't like to wait for a table the bar has open seating including booths. My favorites are: stuffed mushrooms, sweet potato burger, wild rice burger, margarita pizza, California rolls, the club, and flourless chocolate cake. The moonshine is delicious, I get the black cherry. If you go during happy hour it's a great deal.

Every time I have been to this place I have been let down. Do not try the sushi!! This is not a sushi restaurant and it's terrible. My sister ordered it, I took one bite and was horrified. The service is hit or miss. Been many times and I recommend trying their cheese curds. Honestly, don't go here for dinner. This is a great place to hit up for happy hour. I will repeat, so not order sushi.

Update: 8/6/15 Tavern on the Hill is now 3 for 3 in my book. Each time I have been here, I have ordered something new and every meal has been great. So... Tavern on the Hill gets another star, moving it up to 5 star status! I noticed, that every time I have eaten there, I have ordered a meal from the "Burger Menu," which is very rare for me. On top of that, it looks like there next item I plan to order will come from that menu as well. Since my first visit, I have ordered the Wild Rice Burger and the Bison Burger. The Wild Rice Burger was very good. I would say Tavern on the Hill moves into 3rd place in the Wild Rice Burger category. Bison Burger was also excellent. Unfortunately, it comes with kettle chips, but I asked to substitute the beet chips, which are delicious (and come with Sweet Potato Burger and Wild Rice Burger). Unfortunately, I was not informed by our server that the substitute would add a couple of dollar to the bill. It would have been nice to know. We also ordered the Spinach and Feta Quesadillas (grilled garlic-and-herb tortilla stuffed with feta and mozzarella, spinach, fresh dill, mint, cilantro pesto, chicken, sour cream, and one cherry tomato). I would recommend getting it without the cilantro pesto. Would be very good with some spicy salsa involved. Original review: Stopped by the Tavern on the Hill for the first time in order to see what they offered for dessert. We had just eaten dinner somewhere else, and the place where we ate was out of dessert. So, we thought we would pop in the Tavern on the way home to check it out. I took a look at the dinner menu, just out of curiosity... in case it looked good enough to stop in for dinner sometime in the future. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with the dinner offerings and decided to go with a 2nd dinner prior to ordering my dessert. The Sweet Potato Burger piqued my interest, as I had never seen that listed on a menu before. I decided to give it a whirl. The menu lists it as "a little spicy," but I would list it as "not the least bit spicy." It was however, excellent. I was very impressed and happy that I decided to order a 2nd dinner. It came with beet chips that were also very tasty. For dessert, we ordered the "Rum Cherry Double Chocolate Cake" and the "Fresh Berry Cobbler." I am usually not much of a cake fan and was only planning on having a taste of the cake. I have to admit, it was quite delicious. The Berry Cobbler, was ok. I actually pictured it being a berry cobbler contained by some type of crust on the bottom. So, I was a bit disappointed that it was basically just a skillet filled with a bunch of warm berries, and a tiny sprinkling of crumbly topping. I guess I didn't quite read the menu well enough, because it doesn't specify that it has a crust. It was just the first time I ate a cobbler that didn't contain crust. If you would like your teeth and tongue stained purple for a few hours following your meal, I would definitely recommend eating the Berry Cobbler.

Rolled in during happy hour and I wasn't too hungry, so I got the honey bbq pork sliders (3 sliders for $6). The BF ordered the Velvet Elvis burger which had peanut butter, a fried egg and pepper jack. The sliders were just okay, nothing i'd order again for $6. I got to try some of the burger and that was good. Yes, for those skeptics out there, the peanut butter meshed well with the beef, egg and pepper jack--the peanut butter tasted a little like a thai peanut sauce for chicken satay. The real stars of the night were the drinks we ordered. We had just biked from Duluth to Two Harbors and had our fill of beer at the Castle Danger Brewery, so weren't really looking to drink anymore. Instead the BF ordered the Life Water and I got the Lavender lemonade. Both of which were fantastic and $1 off for their happy hour special. We sat in the main dining room, which was full and seemed to be louder than the bar area (due to all the conversations going on at the same time). The restaurant was clean, modern looking and something we'd definitely come back to for drinks and to try the neapolitan-style pizzas.

The restaurant is beautiful, very hip and trendy. We were impressed when we walked in. The service we received was wonderful. Sadly, the food was absolutely TERRIBLE. The menu items sounded great but we were truly shocked at how bad the food was. I truly hope a new chef can revamp the menu before this restaurant goes out of business. We definitely don't intend to return here until the food improves. I still can't believe something as simple as beer cheese soup or ahi tuna crisps could go so terribly wrong.

I have been here twice. After 10 pm they have $3 pizzas and $4 tap beer including imports. This is one of those places that the advertised price does not include tax. A beer is $4 until you pay it is 4.50. I have had the mac and cheese which was good only with the addition of chicken. The chicken strip sandwich is recommended as a signature recipe but is atrocious. The pizzas are wannabe Margarita and the crust is pre made. If you want to eat in Duluth go to Anchor Bar in Superior or cook at home.

I'd like to give it five stars because the food and the atmosphere were absolutely phenomenal, but the service had some problems. The servers were incredibly warm and welcoming but with it being the first weekend they still have a few kinks to work out in their system. They were out of several dishes, the food took a very long time to get to us, and some of the orders were wrong. However, our server was very nice and apologetic, and even gave us a free pizza while we waited. Once we got the food it was absolutely incredible. The meat lovers pizza is some of the best pizza I've ever had and the pulled pork sandwich was the best pork I've ever tasted. I had the S'more desert which was also ridiculously delicious. The entire menu is huge and quite diverse and very reasonably priced. You can get a good lunch for around $10 and a good dinner for around $15. I'm looking forward to this place figuring out how to work out the kinks in their system because once they get their service figured out, it will be one of the best restaurants in Duluth.

Went there for lunch on a Wednesday with a friend. Sat outside on the comfortable patio - the atmosphere was beautiful and the umbrella provided ample coverage on this warm September day. For a lunchtime visit, the food seemed to take longer than expected. She and I both ordered the Velvet Elvis burger. Everything looked great except the egg on top of the burger. I probably should have asked, but it didn't say how the egg would be cooked on the menu. It came VERY sunny side up. I am OK with a somewhat runny yolk, but I don't like the whites to be runny, too. It was quite a turn off. I did my best to scrape off the runny whites and ate my lunch, but it was gross. I should have removed the entire thing because it's just not sitting well with me. There was apparently cheese on the burger, but with all the peanut butter I wasn't able to tell. While peanut butter is a novelty on the burger here - a little can go a long way, especially once it's warmed and runny. It was a little too much for my taste. Could have done without the egg or the cheese, honestly, since I wasn't able to taste the flavor of either one among all the peanut butter. The half pound burger itself was cooked to perfection. They offer gluten free rolls for hamburgers - for a .50 cent upcharge - and it mostly held up while eating this sandwich. I upgraded from the standard chips to a house salad - for $3. The salad was good with nice soft lettuces and a smooth vinaigrette, but would have been nice to have on a plate with the burger - or send a smaller plate for the burger. They both came on large rectangular plates and the burger looked really strange on the big plate all alone, save for two cucumber slices (pickles?) nestled next to it. It looked as if I had ordered extra food (nobody wants to look like a piggy) and shuffling two plates back and forth was fine because there were just the two of us, but for a party of 4 it would crowd the table to have all those oversized dishes there. It's a nice location and lovely building and environment, but each of the 5 times I've been here, I've been underwhelmed by the food. I've got a few more things on the very extensive menu that I'd like to try, so I will go back. The wait staff is great.

Fantastic fried avocados, still not sure how they tasted so creamy! The food was served in an extraordinary time despite the large crowds. Plus the water service was the best I had ever seen, it's now the comparison I use to any restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, do not be intimidated by the large swarms of customers toils service will still be timely, food was great, fun atmosphere and chef bens smashed red potatoes were to die for.

LOVE this place! I spent a few days in Duluth earlier this summer, and ate there twice! They have a really diverse menu, and everything that we ordered was really good. I'll definitely be returning next time I'm in Duluth.

The Tavern On The Hill is by far the best restaurant of its sort in Duluth. I went there with a few friends and we sat in their four seasons room which was suggested by Mike, one of the managers. It was a great recommendation because it was beautiful! Taking a look around the Tavern as I peeked around, I noticed how well its interior was decorated. They have a custom painted mural representing the surrounding area, in one of their dining rooms. It's very cool and unique. For lunch, I ordered the Cubano sandwich with a black cherry moonshine to accompany it. The sandwich was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The spicy pork was so tender and juicy it just melts in your mouth! Living in Texas, I've had a lot of Cuban food and this matches up with the best of them. Upon my first sips of the moonshine, I was blown away. I couldn't believe how well the black cherry flavoring was blended in with the alcohol. You can tell that there was an amount of proof to it but so good that you could drink it without having a sour face. With how good the food tasted along with the friendly service that was provided, why would I not go back to The Tavern? I recommend this place to everyone who likes great food, great service, and a great time.

The food was a notch above Applebee's with prices like they are Grizzlies. Service was subpar at best. Best part about Tavern is their great patio and music selection. I would only recommend their late night happy hour.

I had the Mac and cheese, which was very good. I ordered it with bacon, expecting them to go very cheap on the meat portion. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was enough in the dish to have some in every bite. The atmosphere was okay, but the acoustics aren't very well suited to group conversation-this place is pretty loud. The entire restaurant was very clean-including bathrooms. Unfortunately, the service wasn't in line with menu pricing. It took quite a while to be seen by a server. When she did arrive, she wasn't terribly attentive. My side salad came with the wrong dressing-the food runner isn't the same person as the waiter/waitress, but I asked for the correct dressing. He never returned, and I had to ask the waitress for the proper dressing twice. I'd happily give them a second chance just for the food, but I'd expect better service.

I am only giving this restaurant 3 stars because it is SO EXPENSIVE. The food is great, the service is good, but unless you want to drop 40 dollars for a meal and a drink.... Maybe only order from the appetizer menu.

The server was very friendly. The menus were a bit confusing as the prices had no dollar signs beside them so I wasn't sure what it meant at first. I'm a basic hamburger and French fries type, I don't like extra spices or anything. The French fries were not good but the hamburger wasn't bad. I didn't really mind the loud music but others clearly did. We didn't notice a long wait for drinks or food. And it was busy for a Tuesday night which was coincidently Election Day in the States.

Atmosphere is great. Very kid friendly as well with bar seating an large booths to accommodate families. Waiter brought a complimentary smoothie for our 2 year old daughter which was excellent. We ordered several drinks from the bar which were good, but took a long time to get to us. For food we had the cheese curds as an appetizer which I would order again. For the main course I ordered the walleye and my wife had the salmon. The walleye had good flavor but the texture was slightly soggy. Chef might need to use a hotter pan next time, but I'm no professional. My wife's salmon was very good, but she did have one bitter bite of her side dish which was some sort of hash. Overall, great atmosphere, kid friendly, average service, and slightly above average food. Would be willing to give it a second try.

I stopped into The Tavern the other day after class, being that this is within view of the UMD campus, and wanted to study with a beer. This place still doesn't have a pitcher option for anything, in fact doesn't have pitchers at all! Wish they could bump that as an option and I'd be willing to move my review higher. Otherwise service took a little bit and I understand that this is a new restaurant and you have to learn the new area as a new server, but make some conversation too with your bar customers guys would have made my first experience from me siting there for a bit with no one near and trying to figure out the deals myself, to a easier and more memorable experience that I would tell everyone about. I would be a repeat customer if these things were different, but for now I'll leave it at 3 because the environment is beautiful and it is clean here so there is that.

Worst restaurant experience in a long time. Took an hour to get our appetizers and they were stone cold. Another half hour to get our food. That was also cold. Cheeseburger smelled and tasted like pickle juice. Fries cold and soggy. Bacon seemed to be uncooked. I understand they are busy and have just opened, but if they can't host a full house of customers ( capacity 380) then maybe they should lower the number of patrons they can serve at a time. I really wanted to like this place. Hopefully they will get better with time but it left a bad taste in my mouth ( literally) I'd have gotten a better meal at McDonald's.

Family had cipiollini, Brussels sprouts, spaghetti and meatballs and the 50/50 burger. My 18 year old son said that it was the best patty he has ever had. 50% bacon and 50% beef. Phenomenal burger phenomenal cipiollini, good bread. Tavern draft beer was really nice too. Spaghetti was above average and the cheese curd appetizers were good but a little greasy. My wife had a cucumber press and that was amazing. Can't go 5/5 but would have like to be able to give a 4.5/5

Sitting at the bar for drinks is fine as you can't really mess that up...food is pretty lackluster and most of the staff treats you like a second class citizen

Over rated. Had to wait over an hour for a table. First impression upon walking in was impressive but that was the highlight unfortunately. We were sat in a large room with horrible ambience. My friend ordered the macaroni & cheese which was fairly decent. I ordered the chicken and waffles. I had to send my meal back (which I never do) because my chicken was so over cooked & completely dried out. When I received my dish for the second time my waffles were soggy, chicken slightly less over cooked but the Panko crust had little to no flavor, not even of chicken. The server was kind and the manager did apologize and offered a free dessert which was tasty (chocolate torte) but overall I would not recommend the food nor the ambience, at least not for dinner. Hopefully the grab & go market is more promising. Very disappointing.

Ok, this place has been open for about a month or so. The restuarant was busy and when I first got here, I had to wait for a seat. I went to the restroom (it was clean) and when I came out, I found a seat at the bar. I was greeted by Justin Lyons. We was awesome and I had a great experience here. He has tried many of the dishes on the menu and he is honest about it. He is very helpful on recommendations. I had the Bison Pot Pie and it was excellent. It could use a little more veggies and about 1/4 less salt and it would be a top seller. I have been in Duluth for 2 weeks and I wish I would have come here sooner during my stay. I would defiantly come back when I return to town. I will recommend the Tavern to the people I work with here in Duluth. Awesome job Justin!!!

Recently wnet back after I had an issue with a very over cooked burger. The Manager and his Hostess were sympathetic and listened. We went back, and I had the Cippino. Very well made, lots of flavor. Been here four times, and every time the wait staff was professional and service oriented.

Nothing special about this place. Not sure why they even built it. Just head downtown and find something better. A bit pricey too.

Every time I come here it takes forever to get any food out of the kitchen and it's cold. I would only come here for their happy hour drinks other than that don't waste your money on overpriced, cold and unsatisfying food.

So so. I had a California Roll and a Spicy Crab roll with a beer on tap. It was VERY expensive and the rolls were not the greatest. Their menu is gigantic and all over the place. I get they are trying to incorperate all their restaurants into one but it is not working as far as I can tell. I would go back but would stay away from the rolls and try a burger or pizza.

Absolutely loved the waffles that I ordered! The service was amazing and the General Manager Travis came over to check in- gotta love that! Really fun atmosphere, amazing murals on the walls as well! Also, super handy and genius of whoever thought of it, there are outlets at almost every table! Overall, fun place, great service, and amazing food and beverages! Definitely coming back!

The wings where great, but the service was horrible. Three times a back up waitress had to come cover for our waiter because he looked to stoned to manage his tables.

It was nice to see so many decently priced and interesting options but what a let down. The music was so loud that the staff had to lean into our booth so we could scream in each other's faces to communicate. And as if that wasn't annoying enough the food was awful - limp fries, greasy onion rings, the sauce for my mac & cheese was not only flavorless but had separated into a chunky mess. Two entrees and and two non-alocholic drinks came to almost $50 - could have spent half that some place else for real food.

Tavern on the Hill was suggested to us by a friend that goes to school in Duluth. We are not from the area- just visiting. We wanted a nicer restaurant to go out to and this was definitely it. We called ahead to make a reservation for 3 and unfortunately they only do parties of 8 or more. We were told our wait time would be between 50-55 mins. As we were waiting we were greeted by the friendly wait staff and one particular waitress that was helping us find a table at the bar so we could drink while waiting for a table. Once we got to our dinner table, roughly 50 mins after walking in the door, our waitress was polite and quick with our order. She was knowledgable about the menu and also answered a few of our questions about touring the city at night. One person in our group tried the peach pie moonshine and that was fabulous. Another tried the sushi and was very impressed. The other things we ate were the bbq pork sandwich, fries, beer cheese soup, and a Juicy Lucy-- all of us left happy! If we are in Duluth again we will definitely come back here!
