Dinner at Osaka last night was ok. I was the only one in our group of 4 that had ever had Japanese of any kind. I was entertaining guests from out of town. Friend of mine and her hubby and my hubby. We did the hibachi. At the sushi bar you order sushi, hibachi table you order that, etc. That's all pretty normal from my past experiences which have been in Minneapolis. Fuji Ya, Ichiban and a couple others but they have been quite a while ago. The menu was odd to me for what is supposed to be a pretty upscale place. Nasty, plastic, multi-page thing like a greasy spoon diner menu, and we were expected to order immediately after being seated. When I am at a fine dining place and dropping a lot of money I do not want to be rushed. I understand about the grill but still.... it's supposed to be an experience. First the chef lit the oil on the grill on fire and took us all by surprise. It was hot! I swear my eyelashes got singed. I think that is their big flourish or wow factor and what they call entertainment. The chef didn't use ANY knives, just big spatulas and threw food around on the flat top grill and got a fair share off the grill and unservable (I think a flat top is tepanyaki) not hibachi. Correct me if I am wrong on that. So no great entertainment with that. I personally thought he was a clown and found him more annoying than anything. He continuously flipped food to people trying to get them to catch it in their mouth and most hit the floor which was never replaced, and they also squirt sake into your mouth with a plastic squirt bottle and countdown until you can't take anymore, kind of like a beer bong thing. That did not impress me. Shots of sake would be a lot better. Was the sake good? I have no idea. It's been so very long since I have had sake. It tasted to me like a VERY light white wine with apple cider vinegar. The other places I have been to, the meal came in courses. Small iceberg salad, which I liked because of the dressing. Soup came at the same time so it got cold, and it was a clear broth with a mushroom slice or two in it. Absolutely flavorless. Warm water. Then fried rice, noodles, 2 sm/med. shrimp, vegetables and a long time between each of them. They were all tasty. Not great but good I guess. I ate because I didn't want them to get cold but I noticed everyone else waited for their main... steak or whatever. By that time everything else was cold. We each had two dipping sauces. They were both quite thick like salad dressing. One tasted like ranch to both me and my friend and I think it was. The other was the same dressing that was on the salad. Orange ginger puree of some kind which I happen to like a lot. I really like fresh ginger. She did not. Normally my hubby does not like fresh ginger either, but he liked the salad. Go figure! I didn't really know what to dip in them. I suppose the shrimp. They were good to me as they were and were cooked well. Not overdone at all. I think we each got MAYBE 5 total tiny (julienned) pieces of broccoli and zucchini, neither of which I normally like so I dipped them in the ginger dressing and they were good. Just not enough of them. I ordered steak and lobster. Med Rare. My friend ordered steak well done, My hubby ordered Swordfish and I do not know what my friend's hubby ordered. The guy next to me ordered steak and lobster, also, RARE. Nice, friendly guy! We had some good laughs! So that was a bright spot. When the chef placed the meat on the grill I noticed that the steaks were very thin (I like and 1 - 1 1/2" at least) and the swordfish was very pale and gray. Maybe that is how it is supposed to look?? I am not an expert on swordfish and my hubby had never had it before. Very small lobster tails. 3-4 oz? So then our steaks and everything came up and he threw that on our plates and again some people missed some food. As normal it's all cut up. In this cased diced. I got 3 or 4 small pieces of lobster. My steak and the guy next to me who ordered rare, we both got mid well+. It tasted very good but was way overdone. Hubby said his swordfish was VERY, VERY fishy. He loves fish of all kinds. Is swordfish supposed to be that strong? Not sure what my friend and her hubby thought of it all. It was new to them and my hubby. It certainly wasn't like other Japanese restaurants I have been to, but then this is Duluth. Actually there is some REALLY GOOD food to be had here. But it was new experience so... even if it wasn't great, it was something new and a new memory we can maybe look back on a laugh about some day. Would I recommend Osaka in Duluth? I don't know. Not to anyone that has been to some really good Japanese teppanyaki or hibachis. The food was neither bad nor great. Just not worth the price of the "show ticket". There really is no show. Maybe if you go and just eat in the regular dining room.

My wife and I enjoyed this meal and appreciated the staff's conditional menu revision choice. We loved every minute of it,

I had the hibachi here. The hibachi chef was entertaining, but a little rude. I think he was tired from a long day and it was a downer on our night out. The food was average at best and price too much for Duluth. I will not return for the hibachi. However, I will return to try the sushi.

I go there because I don't know where else to get good sushi up north. They don't have rice based beer and they really can't tell you about the different types of sake they offer. The servers are pleasant, but the language barrier made it difficult to ask questions about the types of sushi or even get their recommendations. If you are going for the ultimate dining experience, go somewhere else. If your desperate for sushi then maybe it's sort of the place? Waiting for something fantastic to arrive to take it's place...

I have to admit that I was scared to try Japanese food in Duluth, well, actually, afraid of Japanese food in all of MN. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was nice. The food was fine. I wouldn't rave over the food compared to some super awesome Japanese food I've had elsewhere, but considering the location, it was pretty good! I had a shrimp tempura lunch plate which came with California rolls. Sweet! The other 2 with me did the"hibachi" style lunched. They enjoyed their food. The entertainment was nice too. Prices are pretty low, about $10 or slightly less for a lunch plate. I'll be back!
(4)Miss P.
This place is pretty good for Duluth. Great lunch special with 3 rolls for $11.
(4)Greg S.
This was the best Japanese food i've ever had! It was awesome to watch the chef's do they're show while cooking your food right in front of you. I loved the squeeze bottle of sauke' being squirted into my mouth for as long as i could go. Made the experience of sitting around the table with stragers a lot of fun. I can't wait to go back!

Couldn't find our reservation - no problem, though, as it was a wait of only about 10 minutes. Servers OK, but they need a few more English lessons. Hibachi show very entertaining. Sushi mediocre. Spicy tuna roll not spicy at all; in retrospect, I think the waitress misunderstood me as saying the FRIED tuna roll. However, I had a few (well, let's say many) bites of my mom's hibachi steak, and it was delicious. She personally rates it as the best restaurant she's ever been to. They give you a free serving of mochi ice cream if it's your birthday. Very loud - don't expect to discuss Hegelian existentialism here. However, the atmosphere is fun, and not artificially so. I can imagine it being a fun spot for a wedding party, etc. Go for the ambiance, and don't put your hopes up that you will have good sushi, although the steak was excellent.
(4)Jill M.
Worst pad thai I've ever eaten. It should have been magical for $16. Only saving grace were our tuna roll appetizers. Otherwise this would be a one star review. I'll avoid this place in the future.

I've been dining at Osaka since they've opened and they've never disappoint me. I travel extensively with my work and have eaten sushi and hibachi in some of the best restaurant cities in the US... and I find Osaka a good destination spot, especially considering it's Duluth, MN! I prefer their AMBIANCE over Zen House (attached to a gas station and seems to have been an old fast food joint) and Hanabi (one large open room and not very intimate). The hibachi section is fun and entertaining and the food, delicious. Of course, we only ever order the filet mignon because for a few dollars more, you get the best, most tendery and juicy cut of steak. The shrimp is also a good choice. If you are an adult, they will shoot free saki into your mouth and they are very generous! In the sushi area we always dine at the sushi bar. We get great service here and the chef will make specialty dishes and jazz up our plates for us. We've only had to wait for a table once, and that was because we made the mistake of going on a weekend night. Normally we go Sunday night or weekday night to ensure good seating and great service. I recommend this restaurant for sushi or hibachi!
(4)Ruthie H.
The hibachi grill is the only way to experience this place. Super high energy and really good food!
(4)Mya H.
Good food, but only for special occasions. Pretty expensive, but the freshness and presentation make up for it. They cook the food in front of you!

Considering the salad was probably the best thing I ate, the Osaka was not by any means good. I went with my two boys and my wife. The boys were impressed by the Hibachi experience. I also think it is pretty cool. The boys had steak (sirloin) and my wife and I split the scallops and chicken. The scallops were overcooked and the chicken was tough. The rice and noodles were smothered with soy sauce and teriyaki sauce...too much. Overall, I have been to 3 Hibachi grills in my lifetime, unfortunately this was the worst food and experience.

Sushi in Duluth? Yes Osaka's is a newly opened (only two months) sushi and hibachi steak house. The interior decor is clean and traditional. I was here for lunch and only had sushi although there are hibachi tables. For the sushi the quality was delicious. The avacado's were smooth and ripe. Their lunch special is amazing 3 rolls with salad and miso soup for $11, it can not be beat. The quality & quantity you get for your money is outstanding.

Where do I even start ? I made a reservation for 4 at 6 on a fri night, when I got there they inform me that the reservation was absent when I assured her that I made one and even showed her my call log she rudely told me that I was wrong when I told her to check the day I called Wednesday big surprise she wrote it on the wrong day ... After waiting 40 mins to be seated we wait another 15 mins before we even are asked what we want to drink. Our server was terribly rude and knew nothing about the food or drinks she had a very bad attitude I wish we got an Asian server then at least I wouldn't understand when she talked under her breath. Show ok. Food...bad .... Osaka in the cities is way better service..... FAIL They need to organize better and train thier staff to at least not be so rude. Don't order the chicken it's very dry. The chefs are entertaining somewhat but the cooking is subpar. Spend your money else where.
(1)Wendy S.
Our drinks were watered down. Food was unimpressive.
(2)Pat R.
Food was tasty and fresh. We were sat immediately even though it was New Years Eve. The habachi side was packed and sounded like a great time. We were on the normal dining room side, which was also full. Our server was friendly, helpful and welcoming. We will definitely be back.

A modern food scene in Duluth, MN - maybe? Nearly one year after Hanabi landed in Downtown Duluth, Osaka opened its doors in the Burning Tree Mall near Best Buy. Looking past the awful location, Osaka is a decent hibachi restaurant, which gives us winter warriors a nice option for going out on a friday night. Much like Benihana, Osaka is all about a one chef party/show and the food is more of an after-thought. This is not to say that it is bad, but you will immediately notice that the only asian people in this Japanese restaurant are the chefs and maybe one or two of the servers (or if you went last friday evening at 7:45 PM you'd notice me too). To me, this is code for - it is more about a good time for people looking to enjoy something different than their norm and less about really good japanese food. Which brings us to the food - on the positive - the fried rice was really good and the portions were big. Negative - most of the food came out over cooked (largely because we were too busy being entertained) and they kept playing this awful birthday music (which was accompanied by a disco ball). The sushi, which i also tried was okay - not really good, but not god awful either. While Osaka was packed on the night we went, it will take time to see if it can be a long term success here in Duluth. If you are going on entertainment value - it has a decent shot of making it in this simple minded culinarily challenged land, but if you are judging on the quality of food, I would recommend that you return to Hanabi. Only time will tell...
(3)Jeff C.
The sushi was mostly flavorless and fell apart while trying to eat it. We were seated in the "bar" area of the dining room in a booth, and within minutes there was a crowd of 20+ people milling about right beside and up to our table. It was too loud to even speak, and for $53.00 for a few rolls (it's Duluth, c'mon!), I really expect more. Don't waste your time or money here-Zen House's rolls are better, and Hinabi has a better atmosphere for about the same price.
(1)Michael L.
I went on a weekend evening, which is a good thing. The atmosphere is very nice, but more importantly the quality of their salmon sashimi was through the roof awesome. They came in thick slices and it was just so fresh and tender. It makes the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
(4)Linda Q.
The Hibachi grill was awesome. We had a great chef and we're celebrating 2 birthdays. We ordered sushi and it was delicious and presented very nicely. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for the fun atmosphere. They turned the lights down and put the disco ball on to serve Fried Ice Cream to our birthday boys. So fun!
(5)Veronica C.
Great place! I've had a meal both in the sushi bar & also the hibachi. I prefer sushi but the hibachi part was super fun. The staff is friendly, the sushi is good and very convenient since it's right by my house. But the sushi at Hanabi is the shiznit. If you want amazing sushi- go there!
(4)Xing H.
It's very hard for me to give five stars to any restaurant. I have been eating sushi for 4 years and I'm very very picky about the quality of my sushi. This place does not look like much from the outside it is actually kind of an odd part of town, but don't let that fool you this is a great place.
(5)Lynda B.
Love for two-- amazing and cooked just the way you want. Get a side of scallops to make it the best meal you will have in a long time.
(5)Blern S.
Go with a big group for the most fun. The food is great, though some of the cooks seem a little bored with the act. Get an entertaining cook and you will have a great night. Would be five stars if not for the cheap promotional calendar they handed out. It looked like they spent a whole penny on them. Great shame fell upon the staff. Great shame.
(4)Tristan C.
We stop by for lunch and we were greeted by a friendly server in Tony. He helped us choose the best lunch that fit our tummy and very very friendly and informative. The whole restaurant seems new and soothing looking. Very very nice sushi rice and very very good hibachi meals. Lots of food for lunch and absolutely must try. The only star its missing was its location, its not very easy to find and I think the hostess have to be a little accomodative and smily!
(4)Raffi M.
The hibachi experience sounded promising based on the excitement I heard from the other side of the wall while I sat in the dining room. I would have tried it myself but apparently they need a minimum of 2 people for you to sit at the hibachi grill. Service was mediocre at best and the food left a lot to be desired. All of my food was bland; the wasabi paste on the plate of my scallop roll probably had the most flavor. Although I was seated in the dining room, I was still able to get a hibachi lunch, so I tried the hibachi mahimahi and a scallop roll on the side. The lunch came with soup and a salad, and although the soup was decent, the salad was just some chopped up iceberg lettuce, a tiny slice of tomato, and a dollop of some sort of bland dressing on top. The scallop roll was micro-sized, but the portion size on the lunch entree was a little bit better. Basically half the plate was fried rice, then some vegetables and a slab of the mahimahi, all of which was drenched in a sauce. The fish seemed overcooked based on its toughness and lacked flavor, despite being covered in the sauce. The entree was served with a side of two unknown (thanks to the lack of explanation) dipping sauces. My waitress never came back to check how my meal was going, and as my soup, salad, sushi, and entree arrived they were just set down on the table without any explanation and minimal vocal confirmation. The atmosphere is clean, but loud, even during early lunch service. I might venture back if I come with a group and sit at the hibachi grill, but simply for Asian food there are better choices in Duluth.

The only star its missing was its location, its not very easy to find and I think the hostess have to be a little accomodative and smily!

Our drinks were watered down. Food was unimpressive.
