This place is a converted Embers so I went with the breakfast theme and had a the evening skillet for dinner. It was amazing along with the French toast I upgraded to for a buck. Big focus on buying ingredients from local farmers and having many gluten free options. My server Andrea (who was Minnesota nice on steroids) was phenomenal. So nice and sincere, I thought for sure she was one of the owners. I asked her about the place and she mentioned the owners are more interested in making friends than money. So refreshing to hear. If you want a great meal at a very reasonable price while in Duluth it would be tough to beat the Duluth Grill. Double thumbs up!

I've eaten here three times now and every time the food just blows my mind. I always order the vegan meals and they're healthy and packed with flavor! It's always busy but the service is always super fast and everyone is so friendly. We went during the breakfast and lunch rush and only had to wait about 20 minutes. Their vegan smoothies are amazing too! My boyfriend ordered a bison burger and said it was the best he ever tasted. Every time we come to Duluth, we come here, and tell all of our friends to come here because it is THE BEST

If you like the Moral Omnivore in Minneapolis, you'll love this local favorite. Fascinating menu, great food and friendly vibe. Short wait. Get the onion rings!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the ONLY place to eat in Duluth, especially if you have any dietary restrictions - self-imposed or otherwise. Incredible food & super service. Try the raw vegan taco wraps. You will not regret.

I was in Duluth for Grandma's Marathon weekend (ran the half) and was in search for a solid pre-race meal, but didn't want to be loaded with a ton of carbs. After searching through Yelp, I found this gem just outside of downtown, tucked along the freeway; a place you wouldn't think to find a dining establishment. Parking was plentiful, but packed given the huge event in town. One of the great things about this place is they grow their own vegetables and herbs, right outside and you can see, touch and smell it as you walk in. Speaking of walking in, you're instantly sent back in time, about three decades - where you see people of all generations - and can easily pick out the tourists from the locals. We ended up sitting around the U shaped counter, wedged between an out of state couple and local couple (who brought their own homemade butter!). As you look around the place, you see local goods for sales (local made backpacks) and memorabilia from local teams, and plenty of references to Duluth and the great state of Minnesota. The menu includes the usual suspects, and include influenced dishes throughout the world. We ended up ordering the Smoked Salmon Salad, Raw-Ghetti (with chicken) and housemade sweet potato chips with hunyrika sauce (more on this in a moment) - ironically, what we ordered was nearly identical to the out of state couple (runners think alike?!). All things smoked is a big thing in northern Minnesota, so I had to try out what they had - I was impressed, with the salmon holding a medium smoke flavor (plus the slightly spiced flavoring and dash of lemon and dill). The salad fixings were wicked fresh, clean and prepared with plenty of love...the red pepper vinaigrette pulled the entire thing together. The Raw-Ghetti was definitely the star of our experience - we added chicken for protein - but it's a veggie take on spaghetti with zucchini noodles, fresh vegetables and raw walnut marinara sauce. If you're a veggie fan and want something other than a typical salad, order this up! The sweet potato chips were a nice change of pace, fresh cut and fried just right, it provided a nice texture change our salads. The hunyrika sauce is something out of this world, hard to describe what it is...but trust me, get this and you won't be disappointed :-) Find this place, make a plan for lunch/dinner - don't leave Duluth without stopping here!!!

This place is fabulous & the service is the best! First time in Duluth & know why everyone gave this place high marks! I had a chicken sandwich with two kinds of cheese & bacon! Oh my so good! Onion rings a must & just sad I has no room left for the Blueberry pie. My husband had breakfast & it was huge with two big pieces of ham. Our waitress was a doll & very attentive. I think her name was Kenzie. She & I love a song . She took the time to find out who was singing!

My wife and I stopped for the night in Duluth, on our way west to Vancouver - a trip we take every year. Most of the time we have problems finding good restaurants that have a good selection of vegetarian food. So finding the Duluth Grill was our great luck! Their menu for both vegetarian and meat dishes was extensive and innovative. The meat dishes feature grass-fed, range beef and other free range, non-medicated meats. All very nicely prepared and yummy. Good ambience, not pretentious and friendly staff who are timely in their service.....Highly recommended! Oh, yes....no alcohol....

Duluth grill is great. They are your stand alone neighborhood diner complete with the counter and swivel stools. The decor is a ton of Minnesota art, both local and out-state regional. Metal flying pig sculptures to masterful paintings of roosters. Excellent eye candy covers all corners of this place. The service is great. Coffee carafe toting young ladies are zipping all over the place to make sure that liquid gold is steaming the top of every mug in the joint. They all excel at their duties and do so with a smile. The food is awesome. I got the smoked salmon omelette with hash browns and a pecan roll. The salmon was good at first bite, the eggs were fluffy and creamy. Deeper into the dish is when it became glorious. The smoked salmon was so delicious and it was smothered in cheese and dill. OMG, I'll be back for this. The salmon, btw is sustainable and smoked locally. Eggs are local as well as the dill (it's from their parking lot). No joke- they have raised gardens surrounding the building and get most of the herbs (as well as the little flowers that garnish most dishes) right outside the front door. Katie got the two egg breakfast and she is fussy about her over mediums. They were perfect and seasoned just right. The bacon was delish and yep- local. The bread choices include uDI's gluten free at no additional cost. Pretty cool if ya ask me. I like high fat, high gluten and high flavor. Duluth grill hit on all three, but thankfully gives you options if you aren't into what I'm into. I'll be back. Soon.

Their banana cream pie was sooo delicious! Definitely will come back for more.

Sublime dining experience. The outside looked like a Denny's but the food was an explosion of fresh and organic flavors. We had lunch -- the fish tacos stole the show with a lime cilantro zest. Next in line the garlic Gouda burger which was lined with a creamy roasted garlic spread. The wild rice melt was spicy and full. The Asian steak and wild rice bowl was chuck a blok with vegetables and a green curry sauce with lemongrass. We got the red flannel hash for an appetizer simply because we had no idea what it was. A medley of roasted sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, peppers and onions greeted us which we smothered with homemade ketchup sweetened with honey and cinnamon. We each had a lemonade , one with fresh raspberries ground up inside, two with peaches and one surprisingly delicious beet lemonade. The service was outstanding!!!! We rounded out our great stay with banana cream pie and some Carmel pecan buns for breakfast tomorrow

What a great diner. They have all-day breakfast and other delicious food. We had to wait 30 minutes on a Monday (July 6, 2015) for a spot because the place was packed. They use ingredients from their garden which is located outside their restaurant! The have homemade ketchup that has a sweet, honey taste. I ordered the Two Eggs Breakfast and it was OK. The food is not seasoned, which is good because you can season to your own liking. The service was fantastic and our server was lightning quick. Would come back.

We were in Duluth for a family wedding and didn't know the area, an ad for the Duluth Grill was on the back of the ship schedule down at Canal Park so we thought we'd give it a try, and boy are we glad we did! We had a total of 6 adults and 4 kids....everyone loved Duluth Grill! All of the kids meals came with a nice size plate of fresh fruit. Among our orders there were pancakes, fish sticks, macaroni, garlic-gouda burgers, fish tacos, the gyro, blue cheese cole slaw, sweet potato chips, onion rings and raspberry iced tea. Everything was amazing. They have fresh veggies growing in their parking lot and use local, organic ingredients. They were also featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.... We could not be more impressed. If ever in Duluth again, this will be our go to restaurant!

A gem of a restaurant in an unexpected location. My family and I happened across this eatery while driving aimlessly through south Duluth in search of food because it was 8pm and we had two hungry kiddos in the car. By the name alone, Duluth Grill, we walked in expecting to receive a menu full of grease-laden uninventive Minnesotan dishes. Instead we were pleasantly surprised by the fantastic options for locally sourced nourishing food. The little girls shared homemade mac&cheese which came with fresh fruit that was served promptly like an appetizer (thank you!). My husband gobbled down his Rogotzke salmon sandwich with green curry kale while my mom and I shared the tastiest Rueben. Our server was friendly, the prices were reasonable, and we definitely will seek this place out when we visit Duluth in the future!
(4)Nicole S.
I LOVE this restaurant. One of the best places to eat in Duluth, with a family friendly atmosphere, good prices, local organic and fresh ingredients, and delicious food! Very aware of dietary needs without sacrificing the quality of the meal. The food itself is excellent. The avocado ice cream, cold pressed coffee, sweet potato fries and the sauce it comes with, and wild rice burger are some of my favorite things to order. The service is wonderful. As a vegetarian, i discovered that the fries are cooked in the same grease as the meat, expressed my disappointment in that, and the cook came out unasked with a new batch that he separately fried, an apology, and to let us know we can always request that be done for future visits. Duluth Grill is the example of a delicious, organically based restaurant that remains reasonably priced. Definitely eat here and try the red flannel hash instead of hash browns!

I stopped into Duluth Grill for breakfast while traveling with my dad and brother recently (thank you for the suggestion, Yelp!) and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was busy, but we were seated right away. The staff was friendly not just towards us, but also towards each other, which is always great to see. The service was good, the coffee was brought out right away, and our breakfast arrived in good time. Portions were big enough that I don't think anyone will leave Duluth Grill hungry. I ordered a pancake as a side item and it was as big as the dinner plate it was served on. Delicious, too! As we were leaving, I noticed raised garden beds in the parking lot outside. It's clear that Duluth Grill uses lots of fresh foods and herbs. All in all, a great experience for our traveling crew. Thumbs up!

Fish tacos were wonderful , fresh and flavorful, but the pie looked like Heaven on a plate. I can't wait to come back and try it!

Great customer service and the bison pot roast sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy was fabulous!

Fantastic food! Highly recommend the vegan dishes.

Duluth Grills is seriously out of this world. To give credibility to my statement, it was also featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Service: Every time I've visited Duluth Grill I've had awesome service. This past weekend when I was there our server was hilarious. My friend really wanted a caramel roll but they usually run out by 11 or 12. Our server was sad to let us know that they ran out. About ten minutes later she runs over and says "oh my gosh, we just found six caramel rolls". Completely made breakfast Atmosphere: From the moment you park in the lot, you realize this is not an average restaurant. There are gardens and plants all over the parking lot and outside of the restaurant. They are actually growing the food that you are going to eat. How cool is that? Duluth Grill also does a great job catering to a diverse group of people. They have gluten free options, everything is organic, vegan, you name it. Food: I'm really embarrassed to admit that I ALWAYS get the BLT. I'm not one to order BLTs but their bacon is the best bacon I've ever had. It's thick and fried to perfection. It comes with a few options. The only two I've had were the sweet potato chips that come with a tangy sauce and onion rings. The sweet potato chips are very distinct flavor and really good. I've also tried their caramel roll which is also amazing. That explains why they run out so early. Drinks: It was a warm weekend in Duluth and I wasn't feeling the traditional hot coffee. They offer both cold press and an iced coffee. The great thing about their iced coffee is that instead of pouring hot coffee over ice cubes, they pore cold coffee over frozen coffee. They also only offer pop in glass bottles because they do not believe people should drink a lot of pop. Sadly, I've never taken a picture because I get too excited to eat. Next time. But, if you're in town, you must check it out!

Tried the Ratatouille on a recommendation from our very friendly server. Absolutely loaded with flavor! Beet lemonade was surprisingly good!
(4)Maggie H.
I was very excited to eat hear because I had heard fabulous things. The decor is great and interesting. All the artwork is local and eclectic. My family got the salmon wrap, fish tacos and I had the veggie mac. The wrap was simple and really tasty. The fish tacos were really good from what I sampled but a little onion-y for my taste. (Easy fix though for next time if we go). Sadly, there was something wrong with my veggie mac. I heard raving reviews about their mac and cheese but my noodles were somewhat mushy and the cheese was not tasty and had a bad consistency. I also found bits of chicken in my vegetarian meal! I don't know if it was a bad kitchen day or what but I was disappointed. The beet lemonade was interesting and tasty as well as the homemade raspberry lemonade. I would give them another try if I'm ever around. The server did give us half off my meal for the chicken.

The name didn't sound all too exciting. When my friend and travel companion suggested the place, I was a little on the fence as she made it sound like it was a true healthy place. I was on vacation and usually I wanted sugar, butter, and anything the opposite of healthy on those vacation days. Apparently, I lost and we went here anyway for Sunday lunch. However, glad I lost. Found out it was featured on Triple D with Guy Fieri. Now that didn't mean too much nor guarantee anything but it should at least tell you that it's interesting enough to be on TV. The place was packed! That's a great sign. The atmosphere looked like a family greasy spoon restaurant but they are serving local, organic, and environmentally friendly food. They even grow some of the produce on their parking lot garden. That was definitely interesting. The menu was oh so big! It was quite impressive as working with locally sourced ingredients and growing their own, I thought it would be a more modest menu. That wasn't the case! There were plenty to choose from - vegetarian and gluten free choices included. I chose to order the Hobo soup which was pretty much a Beef Barley soup. It was very very tasty and hearty. It started off right. For entrees, the three of us decided to share three dishes as we wanted to sample more than one dish. The Wrenshall Pasty seemed to be a no brainer choice. It was featured on TV, locally sourced and sounded awfully good! Flaky pastry filled with ground beef, sausage, potatoes, rutabagas, served with thick brown gravy and bacon blue cheese cole slaw. Yum! It was really good. I enjoyed it. The pasty was humongous too! It was definitely enough to fill you up. Brown gravy was tasty though a bit gloppy for my taste. However, none of us cared for the cole slaw. It tasted rather weird and too green for me. My other friend chose the braised lamb shank in fiery tomato and curry stew. It was another hearty and comforting dish. The meat was falling off the bone as it was slowly braised and rendered in duck fat. The stew itself was nice with a little kick. It was completed with big chunks of potatoes and carrots and garnished with cilantro. Then, my choice.. Fish Taco! I think mine was the best out of the three dishes. It was perfect combo of crispy white fish, avocado, cilantro lime tartar sauce and it was quite spicy from the Jalapeño. It was soooo good!! Too bad I had to share because I'd be glad to eat all 3 tacos myself! We closed it with Banana Cream Pie that was pretty superb. I love that they assembled it just before serving. No soggy crust at all! It was flavorful and delicious!! Drink wise.. The mint lemonade was nice and refreshing. I wish I ordered that. I ordered a locally made raspberry soda that was good but way too sweet. Some little complaints.. Our waitress wasn't the best at listening. I had to ask for things a couple of times, like ice for the soda, extra utensils, and I didn't know why she packed the banana cream pie to go. So when we told her we would eat it there, she actually took it back and did the whole presentation plating for it, instead of just putting it on a plate. So she definitely redeemed herself. It wasn't perfect but not earth shattering. Overall I must say I love the place except the cole slaw and the little service mishaps. I can't wait to come back to try the breakfast menu as well as ordering the Fish Taco and not sharing it with anyone! It's mine, all mine, my own!!!
(4)Steve G.
Entering the parking lot, it didn't look like much. But wow, looks can be deceiving. Nancy had the medieval gyros and I had the smoked salmon wrap. And they grow their veggies in the parking lot. Can't get fresher than that. We'll be back.
(5)Emily L.
I cannot say enough about this place. I live in the San Francisco Bay area which is supposed to be foodie heaven, and nothing compares to the awesomeness that is Duluth Grill. Here are some of the things I love: ~ They use all local, organic, high quality ingredients. ~ Everyone can find something on the menu - gluten free, vegan, burgers, fries, the whole range. ~ They have tried and true classics as well as unique items you can't get anywhere else. ~ Friendly, great service. ~ Excellent prices for the quality. Favorite items: anything with the polenta curry (it's in a few dishes), fish tacos, and the hot chagalate tea from Anahata Herbals.
(5)Lori B.
The huevos rancheros skillet was so worth it. Tried the caramel roll; I'm not a caramel fan, but still amazing! Great service, food portions. Would definitely recommend to a friend.
(5)Kenneth K.
Customer service the way you want it. These guys are terrific, easy to talk to, time for everyone and they really! really! really! stand behind their work. Can't say enough good about this service...and pressure checks and snow to summer mounting is FREE!
(5)Ramsey B.
First time at this restaurant. It's a popular local eatery which offers a myriad of delicious organic food items. I enjoyed the soup of the day (not exactly sure what was served) served in a cup. My entree consisted of a salmon and halibut plate. A local fisherman catches all the fish in Alaska, and it is perfectly served for those customers preferring seafood. My meal was EXCELLENT. Whitney provided great service. I'll be back to experience their other items which are all organic. Lastly, if you're seeking to dine at a restaurant which provides a "Mama's home cooking" experience, this is the place to dine.
(4)Amber H.
The Steak Curry with wild rice was amazing! My husband and I split the dish and shared chips & homemade pineapple salsa appetizer and rhubarb crisp for dessert. It was all very good. The beet lemonade was unexpected and delicious!
(5)Whitney G.
Breakfast all day? Sign me up! Sooo I didn't actually end up ordering a breakfast item, BUT the Chicken Burrito Bowl was delicious and enough food for two meals. The service was great and food came out right away. To top it all off, I ordered coconut cream pie for desert. I had to take it to go because of a short lunch break, but I couldn't resist eating a few bites on my drive home at 5:00. Must try the pie!!
(5)Colette P.
Wow wow! I now understand the 200+ great reviews! We had the 7 porridge bowl and corned beef hash. Incredible. The porridge was the best I've ever had with just a hint of creamy sweetness. Oh, and the homemade peanut butter should be sold in buckets! This is s must do in Duluth...Jill, our waitress, was great too.
(5)Weson I.
I went on a canoe/camping trip in Grand Marais and this place was on our way to the airport in Duluth to go home. It seemed to have great reviews and we decided to check it out to see what the local flavor was like. The amazing thing was not just the food, but how it was prepared. It was practically organic even though that is not how they branded it. Everything was grown locally or shipped in from smaller reliable farms not too far away. I had the blue berry lemonade and it was delicious, and so was just about everything else on the menu. The food might seem a little pricing, but the portions are worth WAY MORE than what you've paid. I had lunch, enough for an afternoon snack and a filling dinner from just my lunch order. The employees who worked here were also amazing and did a good job on keeping an eye on us to get us everything we needed. Not to kick us out, but to ensure we were having a great time and that we didn't feel rushed. We were there pretty damn long be used we got full just from eating 1/3 of the chips and dip.. AN APPETIZER FILLED US UP! When our meals came, we got 1/10 of the way through and we had to pack them or choose to throw up while eating.. And I wasn't throwing up this amazing food. If you're in the area, stop by today and you'll see how my review is an understatement of how much this place is worth visiting. They earned a 25% tip from me!
(5)Jp A.
Just stopped here with a party of 10, from kids to grandparents, veggies to carnivores. Everybody LOVED their meal!! What a friendly, tasty, eclectic surprise. Duluth, there is more to you than I thought.
(5)Allie H.
I love the food here! I got a BLT and a salad. The salad was not great...tasted a little like dirt to be honest. But they do grow their own veggies so that would explain the taste. As for the BLT...best bacon EVER! And tomatoes....WOW! Super good. I didn't like the atmosphere though. It was really reaaally loud and crowded. I had to shout across the table to have a conversation. It would be perfect for take out.

Wife and I stopped in for brunch on beautiful late summer Sunday at noon. Waited about 1/2 hour for 'counter service', (were told it's quicker), ended up with a booth which was great. Ordered a fresh fruit plate and Eggs Benidict to split as we're older and don't eat that much. Most places act as if you're cheap and they're not going to get as big of a tip so the service is sometimes sub par. Not here. We've been here about 4 times in the past and always split our entrée and always receive fantastic service! And of course that's not to mention how fabulous the food is. It goes without saying. This time we also ordered 2 pasties to go and Tom and our server went over and above to package them up for our trip back to the cities. Tom custom cut Styrofoam to line a box then provided a couple frozen disposable ice packs to keep the pasties frozen. He didn't know us from Adam, but that's just the kind of service they give. We brag this place up and undoubtedly will be back.

Yum, yum, yum and then some! Stopped here for dinner with the family on a Saturday visiting Duluth. We got there early (5:30), or else we would have had to wait a good while for a table. I'm ashamed to say that I don't have any picture to post because we ate everything too fast! Our dishes: two ham and cheese omelettes, a blues burger with sweet potato chips, mac n cheese, and the smoked salmon for me. Oh, my. That salad was very large and very, very delicious! I appreciated the addition of avocado. Sure, it was a little decadent but still very healthy, and I really liked that the greens I was eating were grown out back. Everyone else had good reports on their dishes too. We ordered two desserts, and I'm glad that we did! We chose the key lime pie and banana cake. I wasn't excited about the banana cake, but that was the hit of the night! It is banana bread, layered with fresh, house-made whipped cream and fresh banana slices. I would make another trip to Duluth just to taste that banana cake. Do yourself and favor and order dessert! Duluth Grill also has cute gifts for sale, including postcards, calendars, hand-painted cards, and a book on the Glensheen mansion. Very cool!

Wow. I'm what I call a "conscious eater," and when heading out of town, I'm always concerned about finding healthful, whole food. How lucky that we stumbled into the Duluth Grill. This store used to be an Embers long long ago, and it still has the basic structure--a large restaurant with tons of tables--yet, people are often still waiting at the Duluth Grill. Why? Because the food is amazing down to the last detail. By the way, while I saw waiting, a fantastic Native American man of 82 invited me to use the bit of bench next to him. He turned out to be a retired professor from the U of MN in Native Studies, and he was charming. My wait went by quickly! During our two different visits to the grill, we somehow ended up with the owner, Tom, and his lovely daughter, at our table chatting. He explained how he takes care of details like making their own vanilla syrup for the flavored coffees, as the one from restaurant supply is made from artificial flavors and corn syrup. He fries in specifically non-GMO sunflower so if you must eat fried food, he's got that aspect covered. He and his family grow vegetables in the parking lot. You heard that right. On visit one, I had a many-grain porridge that was fantastic, served with fruit, frothed milk, and I can't recall what else. Everyone else had food-food rather than breakfast food, and everyone was stunned by the deliciousness and detail of their foods. Someone had a fresh made apple crisp with house made vanilla ice cream. I found that so amazing I just couldn't stop eating it. There were many fantastic vegan foods and juices/smoothies and even a few raw items, but on my second visit I couldn't skip the "cinnamon roll french toast" made with their scratch made rolls and served with local daily butter and real maple syrup. I will be returning to the grill this fall just for that dish. What a wonderful family, and what a service to the community this food and this restaurant are providing! Surprisingly, prices were very reasonable, lower than I would expect to pay for food at this level of conscious preparation. I am a forever devoted fan of the Duluth Grill. Thanks, Tom!!
(5)Bill H.
There's a good reason that this is the top-Yelp-rated restaurant in Duluth. Don't let the fact it was (obviously) an Embers at one point fool you - this is locally sourced, organic, scratch-made heaven. We came for a late breakfast on a Thursday in April and were seated immediately. Apparently it gets REALLY busy, but I would say it's worth the wait. I had the "Hash Lovers Skillet" as I am indeed a lover of hash. And yes, it was lovable. Big chunks of corned beef, onions and potatoes were topped with a couple of eggs and a good dose of hollandaise sauce. I've never had hollandaise sauce on my corned beef hash, and now I'm wondering why the hell that's not a requisite topping. My son had the cinnamon roll french toast - which was made not from some loaf of "cinnamon toast bread", but sizable slices of their big gooey rolls. My wife liked the eggs benedict, but it had fried eggs on it, not poached. My daughter ordered a beautiful hot cocoa and the buttermilk pancake, which was bigger than her head. Other highlights were the fantastic, locally roasted coffee, and the "healthy elvis" smoothie. The menu is so massive that I think it would take about 100 visits to properly explore it. We don't get to Duluth more than once a year or so, but the Duluth Grill is now on our "must stop" list.

Nom nom nom. I will admit I was skeptical looking at the front outside of the building but wow! I got to choose were to eat that night so I picked here based off yelp reviews:) Our server was so funny and cool he was a hit with the family. He was extremely charismatic. The menu was also a hit! They have a great selection for gluten free! I ordered a chicken burrito bowl (gluten free) which was huge satisfying and delicious! The fish tacos were a hit Mac n cheese and a burger as well with the family. We could not stop!! We ordered apple pie and a dream brownie thing (gluten free) and we ate every last crumb! Wow it was so delicious! Oh and bonus they grow lots of their own food in their parking lot which I thought was awesome. It sort of felt like you were visiting a family or friends place, it was comfortable there:)

I was in town visiting and this place was suggested by my cousin, who is local. It was excellent - there were many choices for my celiac Mom and for me, a vegetarian. I had the wild rice melt with the fruit plate. The sandwich was tasty and filling, and the fruit plate had a variety of fresh fruit- not canned fruit salad, but pieces of pineapple, a banana segment t, apple slices and watermelon wedge. My cousin tried the raw-sgetti (or some such name), which she enjoyed and looked very good. The service was excellent, and our server was attentive but let us sit and chat without making us feel like we needed to leave quicky after we finished.
(5)Lucas M.
Awesome buffalo burger, fish tacos, and the best hummus I ever had. My crazy picky wife was apprehensive when we first walked in but the food blew us away. EVERYTHING WAS SO FRESH! We used to drive up through Hayward to get to our cabin but this place has changed our route.
(5)Devin B.
If you love breakfast, this is a place you absolutely must go. So many unique sounding items on the menu to choose from, and it's very obvious the kitchen and wait staff take pride in their work. Would definitely eat here again...and again...and again.
(5)Sandy S.
Yum fish tacos. Back for more. Nice location near I-35 makes it easy to meet family traveling. Never been here for breakfast but a line in the parking lot was a good sign it was a good choice! Fish tacos are very good. Big chicken burrito bowl again...mmm. Coming back for the big chicken burrito bowl.
(5)Witt T.
I have traveled the country and this is one of my top 3 places to eat breakfast. But wait, that's not all folks. The burgers, the entrées, the salads are all very good. Morning noon or night this place is good eats. Normal prices, organic and on top of that locally sourced food. I have yet to order anything less than very good. I dont have time to write about all the good things regarding this restaurant. So I'll write the three things you need to know. This place is packed everyday all day (however wait times for food are normal) be patient when waiting for a table. Good things come to those who wait. Also, bring a coat. I don't know why, but it is always cold in the restaurant. Parking is limited, carpool if you can.
(5)Paul N.
Conveniently located off of I35, the DG is set up like a traditional diner with counter and booth seating. The menu us much more eclectic than a traditional dinner / luncheonette. I enjoyed the lamb shank curry stew. Some good variety of ingredients and flavorful. Coffee's real good too.

I am traveled the country and by far this is top-five breakfast place I've ever been to. You wouldn't notice it from the outside but it is an and organic restaurant, they use only locally bought produce and animal products and are conscientious about the wait is prepared. this does not compromise how it tastes at all, it just gives you the option. Their dishes are very unique and range from simple yet tasty dishes too much more decadent, you will definitely find what you're looking for here. While I was here the place was packed which is always a very good sign of how good a restaurant is. Are also a lot of locals and it was a lot of great conversation going on. Very friendly atmosphere and the waitresses are great. I'm traveling the country right now but if I lived in Duluth this to be my spot!

2nd time here with the family over 5 years and this place lives up to the hype. Kids ate everything on their plates and we love that they bring out fresh fruit. Banana cream pie was great , again.
(4)Ellie E.
Love this place. The food is excellent and never processed. They use local farmers and even grow some of their own produce. Highly recommend it.
(5)Jamil T.
This is probably one of the best all around organic restaurants out there! From their breakfast fare to their burgers and desert.. You can't go wrong! This place is 3.5 hours from where we live and it is worth the drive alone! :-) Add to all that the fact that not only our server but all of them seemed genuinely happy to work here and it makes the dining experience even that much better! I could go on but desert just got here.. Chocolate cake.. Oh wow!
(5)Brenda D.
If you haven't tried the new biscuits and gravy menu this is a must! I tried the avocado chicken and tomato breakfast with a side of kale. I felt so happy eating this that I could not stop. The chicken came out a bit dark and crunchy but it was so moist. The gravy was not outstanding but when you put it all together, meaning the fresh biscuits , the juicy chicken, avocado , tomato and gravy it was amazing. And if you have not tried their side of kale, which you can get as a side for anything in this restaurant, you have to try it! Bright bushy green bunch of fresh kale lightly sauteed in a ginger vinaigrette and served with a side of green curry sauce. I feel so healthy and excited about eating this that I order it every time. Way to go Duluth Grilll! Once again you exceed expectations. NOTE...it's the ATC not the AVC..
(5)Garrett Z.
Love that they grow their own veggies and herbs...in their parking lot! Excellent food with your health and the earth in mind. I had the turkey burger with the bacon blue cheese coleslaw. Awesome, loved the coleslaw. The atmosphere was vintage 70s diner with country modern updates, but its not the decor I go for, its the FOOD! Unique place that you think you would see in Uptown Minneapolis instead of in the heart of Taconite country. A must stop!
(5)Jim B.
Am a huge diner / cafe fan and this is by far the best restaurant in this category. Amazed that until about two years ago never know that existed but now every time head to Duluth a must stop is Duluth Grill. Innovative menu with just an amazing array of both healthy and vegetarian and vegan, etc. options. But don't think its just the healthy stuff - they have terrific caramel roll which highly recommend. Very very busy on weekend so try and go at off times during the weekend or head over during the week. Cannot emphasis enough that next time you are in Duluth its a must stop for any time of day meal.
(5)Tim K.
I'm sure I don't have to convince too many people with my review that this is a terrific place and a Duluth gem. Great menu. Fresh, organic, local ingredients literally grown in the parking lot in some instances. Friendly staff. Must go. Special shout out to the weekend brunch menu with biscuits and gravy!!
(5)Susie A.
Thank you yelpers for sending me this way. What a find! Huge inside. This place needs a new sign design (and name... ) but loved the decor inside. Retro? Divey? Certainly not a "grill." More like a diner or cafe. Who cares when the food is this good! The owner's interesting story is on the menu. And she is walking around checking on all the tables and having chats. Such a sweet lady! I absolutely loved my smoked salmon omelet. It was a thin crepe-like egg jam packed with so much salmon I had to put half in a box for later. The grilled marinated kale was every bite amazing. Flavor! Nothing boring about this side dish! We will be stopping here on every visit to Duluth from now on. :)
(5)Erick W.
Just had lunch here. Had the raw lettuce tacos. Excellent choice! Too bad I'm only passing through. I'd definitely recommend it and have it again.
(5)Phil L.
This is a diner in the midwest, it's like you've actually been transported to New Jersey minus the gaudy chrome on the outside of the building. In an attempt to get away from the marathon crowds we hopped over here for my post run meal. It was the highest rated restaurant on Yelp outside of downtown Duluth and when we got here the place was packed. Fortunately we were able to get a seat in about 15 minutes for 6 people which was surprising given how many people were here. I ordered their pasty which apparently was seen on Guy Fieri's show. A pasty is essentially a hand pie stuffed full of potatoes, ground beef, and other stuff. This was served along side their coleslaw and meant to be eaten with gravy. Since it was featured on the show, I thought this would be an amazing dish and boy was I wrong. It was plain at best, the pastry wasn't flakey, the filling was under seasoned (as in not at all) and given how piping hot it was, I'm pretty sure they microwaved the damn thing before serving it to me. The coleslaw was awful, who the hell puts cheese in coleslaw? I should have known better, when you go to a diner, stick to your breakfast basics or order a sandwich. Deviate anywhere from that and prepared to be disappointed. I'll be glad to give them another shot next time on regular diner food but that pasty was a huge disappointment. I will give kudos to our server because she was incredibly attentive and nice.
(2)Wendy S.
When my friends from out of town come to visit Duluth, this is the first place they want to go to for locally grown/caught food. Everyone in the group finds something on the menu to make them happy.
(5)Don N Amber S.
This place is seriously amazing. Small diner-type feel with friendly staff. The food is local or they grow it, which is awesooome. I had the lake superior trout dish and it was excellent. The ketchup is to die for...I bought the cook book for that recipe alone, but there are tons of great recipes in there. What a little gem!
(5)Eric E.
All I can say is awesome. Food, service, and space. All top notch. Way to go Duluth Grill.
(5)Jen B.
Fantastic! Small diner type of atmosphere but outstanding food & extremely friendly service. Highly recommend! We will definitely be back again!!
(5)Scott L.
Great food. I had the corned beef hash. Top quality. It even came with an iced cinnamon roll. Really good coffee. My son had cinnamon roll French toast and gave it thumbs up. I was there on a Friday morning and it was packed the whole time. I guess everyone else knows about this gem too. I will definitely be visiting again.
(5)jt s.
Very clean. Fun vibe. Solid menu. Gluten-free menu was good. We liked the gluten free mac and cheese and the dessert s. I was pleasantly surprised by Duluth in general.
(5)Alice M.
Been here for my brother's bday and their burgers are the best. It gets really busy on the weekend but the wait is always worth it trust me!
(5)Kevin B.
Tom and Jaima are awesome. The food is super. Way to go!
(5)Rachel B.
Everybody is happy at this place. The servers, the cooks, the patrons. The only semi-unhappy people are the ones waiting to eat, and they'll be happy soon enough because they're about to eat at the Duluth Grill. I had the huevos rancheros and my daughter had homemade mac and cheese, and both were excellent. But my husband's ratatouille was seriously one of the most delicious things we've ever ordered. Ever. Between the polenta, the flaky, tangy goat cheese, the pile of kalamata olives, and the fresh, fresh basil... wow. Also wonderful: the sourdough with homemade PBJ, which came with my huevos. And like I said, everyone in the place was just so happy, and nice. My daughter spilled her kefir drink, and it was immediately cleaned up by a cook and replaced by the server before we could even fathom asking for a replacement. So sorry this place is 2.5 hours away!
(5)Scott D.
Great food and staff. Had the Tuesday special (open faced turkey sandwich). Best I've had since a few days after thanksgiving.
(5)Carole R.
This was our second visit to Duluth Grill. We stopped based on a local friend's suggestion when we were traveling through Duluth. This place is extremely busy, plan on a wait. The staff is prepared to handle the crowd and are fast as well as friendly. There is table, booth, and lunch counter seating. It appeared very clean amidst all the chaos of people. The food is said to be high quality local ingredients. We've tried the salmon wrap, fish tacos, and the chicken burrito bowl. I loved the wrap! Gluten free and nice flavor. The chicken bowl was good, but the grilled chicken was very dry. The fish was breaded and fried for the tacos (not my preference), but the fresh cilantro, sauce, and fresh lime were a perfect combination for these tacos. We would recommend this place to locals and travelers alike. It is extremely convenient to get to from the expressway which is a bonus!
(4)Kathi B.
We picked the restaurant due to its appearance on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. My husband ordered the fish tacos and said they rivaled ones he had eaten on San Diego. My son had the Loaded Mac and Cheese and inhaled them. For dessert we ordered their famous Banana Layer Cake and it was delicious. Bananas and cream layered between moist banana bread/cake. The waitstaff was friendly and efficient. All in all a great stop in Duluth!
(4)Deana T.
Breakfast was so good the first day we went back on the second day. We were in Superior for a hockey tournament, and had to drive the big bridge to get to Duluth, but it was worth it. Their menu has so many tasty choices I had a hard time deciding what to eat. Everything we tried was delicious and the servers we had were friendly and prompt. I would eat there everyday if I lived closer.
(5)Jenny S.
I loved this place. As a gluten free vegetarian it was a nice place to eat. I found it on yelp while traveling through Duluth. Love the healthy, organic and local options. I had the wild rice burger and salad, plus pumpkin cake for dessert. All good. The bonus! I left my coat in the restaurant and since we were just passing through and wouldn't be back in the area, they offered to mail it back to me, and at no cost. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will be back! This place has GOOD KARMA!
(5)Ellie P.
The best menu I've ever seen! I love the smoothies they offer along with everything else. The service was great too! We were in from out of town but I so badly wish this restaurant was closer to home!
(5)Hannah M.
During our cross-country road trip, we have had to eat some pretty horrible food in small po-dunk towns...The Duluth Grill was a "taste for sore mouths". It was so delicious and the wait staff was so friendly. We saw this place on DDD and were so thankful to have found it. I had the beet lemonade, turkey burger on a GF bun and a side house salad. All very yummy. The side salad even had kale in it! I really needed that kind of nutrition after having been eating fried food and bland iceberg lettuce for the past few days. Also, the best cherry tomatoes I have ever tasted. Very GF, vegetarian and vegan friendly. They even grow their own veggies in their parking lot!! Very thoughtful dishes and very nourishing food!
(5)Rachel O.
Very tasty!! Long wait to be seated, but once you're seated food comes out quickly and the servers are very nice.
(5)Tara S.
Absolutely fantastic, everything local grown , local meats and fish. Meal was paired excellent with sides. We could not have asked for better service extremely Friendly staff.
(5)Michael F.
Perhaps Duluth Grill excels in some areas, but serving a table of eight and making a salad that isn't limp wet lettuce are not among them. Slow, confused service. Different server every time something came out, total cluster. I ordered the 'Superior' fish sandwich. Now, it is March. So if your fish is frozen and you can't get your hands on a tomato that isn't mushy, perhaps you should yank it off the menu. The tartar sauce was essentially just mayonnaise. My side salad was limp lettuce and a few shavings of red onion. Nothing I ordered was particularly complex, and it was all a bit off in one way or another. A friend who had the fish tacos was befuddled by what appeared to be halved fish sticks on his plate. Really? That said, my table mates who ordered such bastardizations of the English language as 'deconstructed smashed fried potatoes' seemed impressed with the piles of fried food on their plates. So I guess my advice is to stick to the overwraught hipster bait, they have that well sorted.
(2)Shirley I.
Every detail was great! The menu is complex, unique, all sounds so delicious. Our group had the : Northwest Paella- perfect! Pasty - delicious and big enough for another meal Curry Quinoa- excellent! Banana Cream Pie - because Guy Fieri did! Must return and force myself to try more selections when I would be happy reordering these!
(5)Jana H.
I've made it my personal mission to try every item on the Duluth Grill menu. This will not be easy on my wallet or waist line (and the fact that I now live in NJ) but it sure as heck will be one delicious foodie adventure! My family and I stop here every time we go to /from Grand Marais, MN. Even if we are rolling through Duluth at 3 PM, we will make a stop at Duluth Grill for an early dinner because the food is just that good! The Duluth Grill is my favorite one-stop-shop for Minnesota comfort food! Why Eat At Duluth Grill? -Pretty much everything on the menu is absolutely superb! I've only had a few things that weren't bad, but not worth trying again. -Breakfast served from open-close! -They make the best B.L.T. that I have ever had! It's the kind of B.L.T. that bacon lover's dream of. In other words, this B.L.T. sets a high standard for all other B.L.T.'s! Nom-Nom-Nom! -The Beef Pasty is phenomenal! For $10 you receive a meat and potato filled mountain of happiness encased in the friggin' nummiest yet perfectly flaky crust with a side of brown gravy. Comfort food at its finest! Not to mention the side of Bacon Blue Cheese / or Cardamom Cranberry Cole Slaw surprisingly compliments the meal perfectly. -The Duluth Grill uses fresh, local, organic and grass-fed ingredients. They get extra points in my book for growing fresh vegetables in the back of their parking lot. Freshness you can literally see from the moment you drive in. They focus on supporting and investing in the local economy while being environmentally friendly. -Priced appropriately based on taste, portion sizes, service and quality ingredients. -Gluten free has never tasted so good with the Duluth Grill's delicious gluten free menu. Even if you're not on a gluten free diet, the gluten free options are sinfully scrumptious! The gluten free loaded mac & cheese is definitely high on my list of the best mac & cheese that I've ever gobbled down. -Sweet Tooth? No Problem! Save room for desert because the desert menu is killer! I highly suggest the caramel pecan roll (if there are any left), Homemade Rhubarb Crisp or the Banana Layer Cake. The Rhubarb Crisp is fresh, packed with flavor and worth every single calorie. I personally wish there was a tad more crisp/ granola, nonetheless the dish is still craveable! -Perfect For Anyone. Great for meat lovers, vegans, gluten free diets, vegetarians, picky eaters, kids and hungry people in general. No matter what diet restrictions and or cravings one may have, The Duluth Grill literally has something for everyone. My only problem is figuring out what to order because I want to try everything and it all looks sooo good! Summary: Duluth Grill is by far my favorite restaurant in the Duluth area. Eating here is well worth the time, money and calories. Note: Typically busy any day of the week during peak times. Expect a 10-20 minute wait during peak times, especially on weekends during the summer.
(5)Josh W.
Great warm service! I had the deluxe biscuits and gravy with some coffee. Not run of the mill coffee either...place caters to a an organic principle for all its goods. Loved the "loaf" of hash browns and gravy was very good:) would definitely come again!
(5)Theresa A.
Stopped in today for the Quinoa Curry Bowl and the kiddos had burgers. Super yummy and we were too stuffed to try the famous mouth-watering banana cream pie.

Despite living a mere two hour drive from Duluth, I've only visited twice...once when I was very young on a day trip with my grandparents and more recently over the weekend with a couple of girlfriends to attend the Howling Moon Festival at Bayfront Festival Park. We got an early start on Sunday morning to get a solid breakfast before hitting the road. After checking out Yelp, we agreed to try Duluth Grill. And I am SO. GLAD. WE. DID. There's not a lot around the restaurant business-wise...a gas station and some rickety looking houses and buildings. At a glance, the restaurant itself looks like a pretty typical diner (both inside and out) but upon further inspection it is so much more...local art covers the walls, a garden with fresh produce is growing in the parking lot, and the menu is chock-full of vegan and vegetarian options plus more sustainably-sourced meat items as well. It's obvious people love this place because even though we had no difficulty waiting for a table at 8AM on a Sunday, the restaurant filled up pretty shortly thereafter. This place offers specialty coffee drinks and smoothies that sounded delicious, but I stuck to black coffee (bottomless, Rain Forest Alliance Organic that is roasted and supplied locally) with a side of coconut milk (hooray for alternative creamer/milk options!). When it came to the food, I honestly had difficulty deciding what to order...everything sounded so incredible. I finally went with the Vegan Omelette ("Made with seasoned garbanzo bean mix substitute for eggs - all flavor, no cholesterol! Folded with pico de gallo, onions, bell peppers, roasted red peppers, scallions, spicy beans and hominy corn, f an accent of nutritional yeast and topped with spicy green chile salsa, guacamole, and chopped cilantro") which came with a few options for sides...I decided the Red Flannel Hash sounded amazing ("Sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, onion, & bell pepper tossed in olive oil, thyme, salt & pepper, then oven roasted") and it absolutely was. Another fun thing to note - the condiment caddies on every table include Liquid Aminos and Sriracha (among other things)...I'm all about that! I truly cannot wait to make another trip to Duluth so I can try out more from this gem of a restaurant!
(5)Robert W.
So after a night dreaming of smoking salmons I had to head back the next AM for breakfast. Man O' man was the joint full. Totally different than the night before, when I was there 20 minutes before closing. Had to wait 10 minutes for a table. It was absolutely worth the 600 second wait. Fresh organic eggys, over easy prepared over easy. Not snotty, yolks still runny. Real maple syrup. Great sausage and bread. Chirper morning staff, all the workers smiled and were attentive. There is a general good vibe to the place and the parking lot veggies are a trip, go check em out.
(5)Troy G.
Disappointed. Service was friendly enough, but two of the three orders were wrong. We sent one back and the correct dish wasn't served until we were done eating. The food was fine, but nothing special. I have no plan to go back.
(3)Karen H.
Waited about 10 minutes for a table on a Sunday evening. To be honest, I was surprised to find a fresh, organic restaurant in Duluth. With so many gluten-free options as well. I ordered the veggie mac and cheese, which had broccoli, red peppers and mushrooms. The penne noodles were gluten-free (first time I ever had gluten-free noodles). The cheese sauce was good and so were the veggies. I would have preferred a traditional penne noodle option. My hubby had a lamb gyro and the meat was tender and came bone-in. He also ordered a beet lemonade (interesting!). My mom had breakfast-- eggs, sausage and toast. My son had grilled cheese and my daughter had the mac and cheese. I loved that their meals started with a plate of fresh food. So healthy! The food was good and so was the service, but mostly, I love that this place strives for fresh, local & organic.
(5)Meredith C.
Thank you lord. After traveling all day I find this place on yelp claiming GF and Organic and local. I was doubtful but it is the real deal. I had the asian steak bowl -- brown rice, vege (NOT cooked to death) and beautiful spices. Good portion control. AND a green goddess smoothie. Can I come here tomorrow for all three meals? Or is that creepy? If only traveling was this easy everywhere! Thank you Duluth Grill!
(5)Gretchen L.
Was pleasantly surprised by the organic options and local fare. Food was scrumptious with impeccable friendly service.
(5)Taylor G.
This place used to be good. They used to have french fries. They used to have a soda fountain. The restaurant is into the ''local, sustainable'' bulls$&t which I have no problem with. But they stopped serving french fries because they couldn't find a local enough source. They also stopped serving soda from a fountain for the same reason. But now they just don't have either item. Seems like at some point you will make certain customers happy with such decisions and possibly alienate others. There will be a tipping point where you alienate more people than you don't. People like french fries and soda. We went there a final time and I got the corned beef hash skillet and my girlfriend's sister got the vegan omelet. The corned beef hash skillet was basically a cereal bowl filled with meat. Very little potato, but it's probably hard to source those anyway. The vegan omelet looked terrible. It was canned black beans with sautéed peppers and onions in a terrible chickpea batter pancake. She said the pancake was bitter. She did say the red flannel was good. watching her slowly choke down the omelet was sad as shev felt like she had to get her money's worth. Over priced Over hyped And the food is just ok

Since my son started at UMD in the fall, I have eaten here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner several times each. The food, the service and the presentation are all at a notch above what you would expect from the physical restaurant. Probably the most gluten free friendly menu I have ever seen. Nothing we have ever ordered has been less than very good, often being excellent. Servers are well trained, quick and efficient. Food always comes out hot and correct. I cannot imagine a review below 5 stars for this place.
(5)Angela P.
YES! Fantastic, delicious food. When planning a Duluth trip, I asked my coworker who recently moved here from Duluth where he suggested my friends and I go. The Duluth Grill was his top recommendation. Boy am I glad I listened to him! There was something on the menu that delighted everyone in our party, and we have pretty diverse tastes. Everything was hot and delicious, superbly made, and fresh. I got the Fish Tacos with a side of the Crashed Sweet Potatoes, which were fantastic. They came with an interesting dipping sauce that had hints of apple and hot spices, and it was so phenomenal I wanted to keep eating it with a spoon after the sweet potatoes were gone. I wish I'd been able to save room for dessert, but the food was so good that I ate my fill. We all got iced coffee to go after lunch, though, which was also very tasty. Our server was very attentive, even though the restaurant was quite busy. I can't wait to come back here the next time I visit Duluth.
(5)Stephanie R.
Had to wait about 30 min. for a table for late Sunday breakfast, but it was worth it. My daughter had the Mexican Omelette she said it was to die for, and the best hash browns and sausage gravy ever. The French toast was delish.
(5)Gabrielle A.
The Duluth Grill was recommended to us by a local, we decided to try it for breakfast. My fiancé had The Deluxe Biscuits and Gravy which included fried chicken on a biscuit, eggs, hash browns, and gravy. It was incredibly delicious. I had eggs and their sausage patties with hash browns. Super delicious and simple. Everything was cooked well and had great flavor. The service was great and we had a great time. If we are ever in Duluth again, we'll be back!
(5)Kate F.
Nothing bad to say here. What Duluth Grill has done is truly amazing. They locally source a huge proportion of their ingredients, they prepare everything incredibly well all while maintaining a huge menu! And it's all casual and low cost! It's definitely not the sexiest restaurant in Duluth, but it is nothing short of awe-inspiring. There is something for everyone from a huge variety of cuisines on this menu. Don't miss this place in Duluth.
(5)Tom L.
No trip to Duluth would be complete without a visit to Duluth Grill. While Grandma's is, of course, another location to dine at, Duluth Grill lets you experience the local fare without all the tourists. The staff is super friendly and inviting, and the food is all local and organic, and they grow a bunch of their own food in the parking lot. I highly recommend their bowl dinners like the burrito bowl or the Asian steak bowl. They've also got various lemonades flavored with beets or mint. And then their pies are absolutely miles ahead of anything Bakers Square offers. So do visit if you're here for a trip to Duluth or if you need to stop somewhere on your way to the North Shore.
(5)Melissa S.
Food was super good! We had a large group and food came out pretty fast. Waitress was annoyed that we wanted the bill split so we had to split it ourselves. Common sense for a waitress would be to ask if you want a bill split any particular way before bringing it (minus twos stars since it took 10 minutes for us to figure out)
(3)Loren L.
First off, I'm born and raised in Texas. We tend to think our opinions on Tex-Mex food are pretty expert. The Stuffed Anaheim Bison Tacos at the Duluth Grill belong in a gormet Tex-Mex restaurant in Austin or Dallas! I would have bet any amount of money that no restaurant outside of Texas (especially one on the frozen shores of Lake Superior) could make good Tex Mex. But I would have lost!! If you go no where else in Duluth ... go to the Duluth Grill! And if you try nothing else... try the Anaheim Bison Tacos! We've even changed our holiday plans so that we can come back through Duluth and eat here again. I can't wait!! And ask for Ashley to be your server. She's incredibly knowlegable and friendly.
(5)Andy B.
I can't believe I didn't know about this place before! Unbelievably generous portions. I've never had such a fresh breakfast before! Reasonable prices, great service, awesome coffee and a fun atmosphere. We will be back!
(5)Tania S.
A gem in Duluth Minnesota - some of the best food - great coffee - great tea - great friendly atmosphere - love the vegetarian options ...
(5)Chris D.
Here for work and the crossfit gym I dropped in at today, Crossfit Aerial, highly recommended this place due to their organic and farm to table menu. I went with the Wrenshall pastry which is as local as a meal can get. Service (Gage) was impeccable, food was even better and the value is second to none. Do not miss this place!
(5)R H.
Delicious breakfast, fast service(for a dinner). Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Great place to stop for breakfast.
(4)Tasha G.
A breakfast menu that lasts for days. Freshly made cinnamon rolls and caramel pecan rolls made daily. Local and organic. This girl was smitten instantly. The hubs and I made a stop in Duluth after a weekend getaway in the North Shore and I'm so happy we tried this place based off a Yelp search. I ordered the Classic Breakfast with 2 eggs over easy, flannel hash (a must try!), bacon (thickly cut with a delicious maple flavor, this stuff was some of the best bacon I've ever had, if not the best) and whole wheat toast with their homemade peanut butter and jelly (yum!) I seriously "mmm'd" my way through the entire meal. The hubby and I said we'd make a trip to Duluth for breakfast alone because it was SO good. We can't wait to go back! A tip for first timers - If you're going for breakfast, get there early! The wait list builds up fast, but in this case, there's a good reason for it and it's definitely worth the wait!
(5)Cindi B.
We love, love, LOVE the Duluth Grill! Everytime we pass through, it is our one "must stop" location. From friendly service to delicious, local, and healthy food, the Duluth Grill has it! I'm partial to their skillet breakfasts (any time of day) and just recently enjoyed the huevos rancheros. My husband is in love with the burger that comes with Thai peanut sauce, an egg, and avocado. The kids are very fond of their breakfast entrees (but not so much their mac and cheese, which has more of an adult appeal). They brew locally-roasted Alakef coffee, too, which is pure heaven in a mug. Can't recommend this place enough!
(5)Deepti S.
Great place where organic, gluten free, vegetarian and Allergies are not the wirds to ridiculed. Everyone is accommodated with same zest and zeal as a steak lover. ..especially when it is a place in the middle of fishermen and lake living community. I ordered a chickpeas polenta stew which was delicious and filling. A bit sour to my taste but I am glad it wasn't sweet or fatty. Service was polite. Our food was last to arrive and my 9 yr old was very restless. I wish I had met the kitchen manager earlier and spoken to him about my food need, he might have started the order as we waited for the table. My 9 year old ordered mac and cheese , I added some extra broccoli. .kid ate all the brocoli and wasn't as happy with the taste of the dish, apparently Grandma makes it better. My friend took a bite and loved the taste. ..perhaps a dish for adults If you are vegan or vegetarian stay away from everything fried unless they agree to pan fry something for you. Fryer gets meat as well as non meat stuff into it. Hope they start offering baked chips at least as I could not order the appetizer. Vegan and vegetarian menu is very short and I am waiting for them to get creative with it. But that is the case everywhere! I am just glad I had something to eat in a place called. ...."grill" Some day I look forward to be there again
(4)Thomas T.
Very good food and a large variety to choose from. Staff is very friendly and efficient.
(5)Johnny H.
My lover and I were visiting Duluth and opted to make a stop at this eatery after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The staff was friendly, helpful, and patient. I was also delighted to find my doppelgänger bussing tables, however, I was much too shy to say, "hi" and frankly, I shall not be bothered with such nonsense. As I was browsing my menu, eyes a gaze at all of the healthy and organic food options, I realized what this restaurant was missing: carcinogens and more processed food. In my current health, I break into a beaded sweat when I travel up three stairs, and I proudly achieved this out-of-shape body by eating foods that my body doesn't know how to break down and eating foods with cancer-causing ingredients. I cannot have a restaurant trying to make my healthier. But I drank a cup-full of ranch dressing to compensate for the "healthy" meal I ate. So, four out of five stars.
(4)Steve G.
This is a great restaurant for those eating gluten free. Food is excellent and service is very good. Not much atmosphere but if you want great food at reasonable prices this is the place.
(5)Keith H.
Went there only based on the yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Food was fresh and wonderful, endless options it seemed. The staff was the most impressive part. Our host, Miles, was top notch. There are plenty of places to get food, but service like this is hard to find. I'll be back.
(5)Lori W.
Ate there on my first night in Duluth. I was very impressed with the food. They served a chicken hominy chowder that i want to try and recreate. It was awesome! Only drawback would be no alcohol served there. But I will definitely go back.
(5)Sue S.
We stopped by the Duluth Grill while we were up visiting Duluth one weekend and immediately knew upon walking in the door that it is one of those places where all the locals eat at any time of day. At 2:30 on a Friday it was pretty close to packed. Amazing. The sign bills it as a diner and it's really kind of a diner/restaurant hybrid. Half of the restaurant is really old-school diner, with a counter and stools and small cramped booths. The other half is more restaurant with bigger booths and a large number of tables. Menu-wise it feels like a diner, with breakfast all day and tons and tons of options for everything from eggs benedict to sandwiches to a fish fry. We loved that there were local items on the menu (the fish fry was whitefish and delicious). The desserts looked great but we sadly did not have room. The one thing I will say was that the service seemed a bit disorganized. We asked for a booth but none were available, so we said we'd wait. It took a really long time for one to clear out (nobody's fault, and in the end we actually settled for a table), but the people greeting new people kept offering folks who walked in after us booths even though we were sitting there waiting for one. When the people said (predictably) that they would take a booth, then they would look around and go, oh, we don't have any. Once we were seated, we said we were good with water, but a girl brought over two coffees dropped them on our table and walked away before we could tell her we didn't order them. But our server was very nice, apologized and did not charge us for the coffees. And our meal was also very good. As a lover of all diners, I am sure we will stop back by sometime when we are back on the North Shore. I can't resist a place that serves breakfast all day :-)

Best breakfast in town, LOLA eggs!! (Locally laid) Omelets are made from fresh ingredients, huge portions!! Fresh herbs and veggies raised in there back lot.... This is a twin ports must stop

Can't miss spot if you're in Duluth. Everything tasted fresh, best sweet potato fries (chunks) ever. The salad dressings and sauces are all made in house. I wish I had more time in Duluth to revisit the grill again. Really great lunch. Breakfast menu looked great too, sorry I missed it.

Eating at the Duluth grill is like the discovery of a paradise island that you can share with all your friends and never have enough. It is the best restaurant -- food, ambiance, service -- on the North Shore. We stop here every time we trek back from the Boundary Waters. Boasting an incredibly fresh, organic, local and unique menu, you could eat here 100 times and still feel you have more to discover. The bison burger with chipoltle mayo is just spicy enough, the Asian (something) burger comes spread with a rich peanut sauce and over easy egg which makes for a deliciously messy delight. Elaina our waitress is a sweetheart. She seemed to love her job more than anyone in the state, constantly anticipating out needs and chatting us up like we were old friends. Every time at the Duluth Grill is the best time. It will brighten and make any visit to Duluth that more delicious.

A really down-home diner with solid breakfast, lunch and dinner options. My friend wanted to try this place out because they have an entire gluten-free section of the menu. I can eat gluten, but I've often split or tried some of the gluten-free dishes and the chicken quesadillas are a-mazing! I have a huge sweet tooth and absolutely love their caramel apple french toast...yum! Oh and I would probably give up my first born child for their banana cream pie--it's that good. The decor reminds me of a quintessential diner that has been around for ages, and I love the cute coffee mugs that look like they were stolen from a country kitchen. :) the Duluth Grill is a wonderful place to have a great low key meal with friends or family. On a recent visit to Duluth Grill, I found out that they have their own garden, and a lot of the seasonal veggies they use in their dishes comes straight from their garden! :) They try and succeed in being a responsible, sustainably run restaurant with great farm to table produce. I love their story (read about it on the back of their menus!) and absolutely love the restaurant. Things to try: blueberry scones (super soft!) homemade pies - banana is my favorite and probably will be my last request if i had one. bison burger - HUGE, juicy and flavorful. Pair with sweet potato fries and you may be in heaven. ratatouille - not a fan of polenta, but when it's made at DG and covered in hearty vegetables, it's just what a cold winter night needs. It's gluten free and the vegetables are so tasty, especially with the goat cheese on top. caprese benedict - also gluten free as it is an egg, tomato, basil and mozzarella all atop a gluten free bagel. The balsamic vinegar over the whole thing just brought all the flavors together beautifully. caramel apple french toast - if you like sweet, you'll love this. It's like a giant plate of dessert...all for you. :) Now i'm really hungry.

Just had the most amazing breakfast here & also got lunch to go. This place is amazing!! Look past the outside of the restaurant because what is inside is what is important....great food, a friendly staff and a philosophy that embraces organic, vegan, gluten free, local & sustainable. I wish we had a restaurant like this in Milwaukee. Bravo to the Duluth Grill & it's owners for an amazing restaurant.

I would have never gone here if my hotel hasn't suggested it. The only problem is that I wasn't in town long enough to try all the things on the menu that I wanted to try! Yes, it's a diner and yes it's diner style but they grow a lot of what's used in their food, they are organic and delicious!!! I went back to try one of their wonderful smoothy concoctions but due to marathon traffic, it seems as though all the runners thought the same thing. :) When I return to Duluth, this place is a definite must return! Breakfast and lunch for sure!

From the outside you'd think it was just another greasy spoon sort of place with all generic stuff...be prepared to be pleasantly surprised! My hubby and I were referred here by the bartender at another restaurant. It was great! You MUST try the Red Flannel Hash...it is delicious if you want to avoid the carbs in hash browns. They also have gluten-free, free-range and vegetarian options. Awesome. I had the Mediterranean Omelet and though it was good it could have used gyro meat...and there was a shell in it. Argh... But it came with a sweet roll the size of your head (yum) and their coffee actually tastes like coffee! Their menu is huge, the wait staff and hosts were all friendly; all-in-all a great place to get a unique meal. This will be a breakfast tradition when we're in the neighborhood.

My wife and I had been meaning to try out the Duluth Grill since it was featured on the TV show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" a year ago. The place doesn't look like much from the outside and the location isn't in the best place in Duluth, but everything about this place was awesome! Our server was very personable and patient - she took the time to give us many suggestions from each section of the menu even though she had a full section. We started with the bison chili, which had just enough kick to compliment the great flavors. Within a minute or so of finishing the chili, our entrees arrived. Perfectly timed. For entrees we stuck with the bison theme and had the pot roast and the wild rice meatloaf with the mashed baby red potatoes, ( which would have been worth a trip all by themselves ). Everything tasted fresh and homemade. Looking around at nearby tables, it seemed like there was no shortage of great dinner and breakfast options at the Duluth Grill. To top it off we had shared the apple crisp and a caramel malt for dessert, ( c'mon, we were on a little weekend getaway and decided to splurge ). No surprise - Awesome! The Duluth Grill is definitely going to become a staple of our future trips up north from the Twin Cities.

Organic, healthy, unexpected exterior, delicious. Quite a find!

I have mixed feelings about the Duluth Grill overall. I have had amazing meals there and I have also had terrible meals there. If I had written a review after my first couple of breakfast experiences there, I would have definitely given it a 5 star rating. It is usually pretty packed at the Duluth Grill so there is usually a wait to get a table... I'm pretty sure I've had to wait every time I've been in there. Most of the breakfasts I've had at the Duluth Grill have been very good and the portions are large and filling (update 3/14... the breakfasts used to include 2 sides. I went to the Duluth Grill recently and ordered the standard 2 sides with my meal. This time they charged me extra for each side. So, the breakfasts are not nearly as filling or impressive as when I first wrote this review). The omelets are amazing! I would recommend #1 the Mediterranean omelet, #2 the Mexican omelet, and #3 the roasted red pepper and pesto omelet with feta cheese. I was a bit reluctant to try the red flannel hash, but once I tried it, I have ordered it every time since. The warm, soft cinnamon rolls are gigantic and they are delicious! The caramel rolls are also huge and pretty tasty too... the cinnamon rolls are my favorite though. If I stopped there and that was all I had tried at the Duluth Grill, I would have definitely given it a 5 star rating. However, the rating dropped as I explored the menu a little more. The smoothies I've tried have been ok. Not nearly good enough to order them again though. I would be willing to try out some of the other flavors I haven't ordered yet to at least give them a chance. (Update: 3/14... I decided to give another flavor a try. It was again ok. They have great ingredients for their smoothies, but they are very small and way, way too expensive for what you are getting. I could make you several large smoothies with the same ingredients for a smaller price if you are interested.) I ordered the wheatgrass juice once and it was one time too many. I thought that a restaurant that offers such amazing options such as cage free eggs, organic flour, homemade pancakes, pure maple syrup, many gluten free options, Lake Superior fish, local grass fed beef, and free range turkeys would have some nice, fresh, organic wheatgrass juice. However, the wheatgrass at the Duluth Grill is absolutely disgusting! It is like they took a shot glass of warm, dirty dishwater and added a scoop of green powder which they let settle to the bottom of the glass before serving. YUCK! I also branched out from the breakfast menu by ordering salmon there once. That will be the last time I will order salmon there. It was by far the worst salmon I have ever tasted at a restaurant. I could hardly choke it down. (Update: 3/14... I took a look at the dessert menu and it looked amazing! I decided to go with the Pumpkin Spice Cake, which is described in the menu as "Savory, sweet, and delicious. Served with our homemade maple cream sauce, using Rogotzke's maple syrup, decorated with powdered Ssugar (sic), dollops of homemade whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg." I asked the server about it prior to ordering and she told me that they warm up their maple cream sauce, pouring it on the plate, then they set the fresh, warm cake in the sauce and top it off with the whipped cream. It sounded very good, so I decided to give it a try. When I received the dessert, it felt like the plate had been pulled straight out of the freezer. The maple cream sauce felt like it was poured from a pitcher straight out of the refrigerator. Hence, the dessert was not warm at all... it was cold. I did not notice a maple flavor in the cream sauce. The cake itself was very dry. I did not detect any hint of a pumpkin flavor. I would rename it Nutmeg Cake. The nutmeg flavor completely overpowers the dessert. I would not consider it a "sprinkle of nutmeg" as described in the menu.) The most recent time I visited the Duluth Grill, the service was excellent. The Duluth Grill has a huge menu with all sorts of things that look really good. I'm hoping to find some more treasures I have yet to discover. If I do, I will make sure to report back here. However, after a couple of the experiences I've had, it just makes me really nervous to branch out too much there. So, if you stick to the omelets and cinnamon rolls, you've got yourself a 5 star restaurant!

.Really highest order of diner food for hundreds of miles!
(5)Angel S.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner - can't go wrong with anything you order on the menu! Coffee, locally roasted, is always perfect in the morning, and the berry lemonades any other time are always deliciously refreshing! Love the turkey burger for sure. Glad to know a place in Duluth truly cares about taste/quality food while utilizing organic & free-range ingredients, local meat & eggs, while growing some of their own produce and herbs in their parking lot gardens. They also have a variety of specific menu items that are gluten-free or vegan too - and employees who seem to really like their job working there. I always look forward to going to the Duluth Grill when ever I head up to Duluth. Glad to have this little hidden (okay, maybe not so hidden) gem! Depending on when you go, you may have a line of people ahead of you so be ready for that, but it is worth the wait, especially for brunch on the weekend. No reservations here. Little tip: if you are solo or 2 people in your party, seating at the counter is often faster, but there could be a wait there too. What rewards your patients is wholesome cooked and baked goodness!

I don't get to Duluth nearly enough, but when I do, the trip isn't complete without eating @ Duluth Grill. The post-feast delirium always includes an urge to move to Duluth, make babies, & never leave.
(5)Annie P.
The gal at Fitger's Inn front desk recommended this place and man she was right on! Everything is locally sourced, organic. Cool vibe and great coffee & coffee cups. Our server Buffy was super helpful recommending breakfast choices and giving us great tips of where else to eat in Duluth. My Salmon Omelet was superb. Oh my!! The salmon was from Northern Water Smokehaus. We will come back here a lot more when in Duluth.

This has become a Duluth fixture for me and my wife. We stop in every time we are in town, or just driving through. I'm not sure what else can be said about this that hasn't been sad already though... I picked up the cook book and I'll say it's pretty awesome. My only complaint about the cook book is however, all the portions are huge. Huge as in I didn't really read the amounts of things I was making until attempting to make them at home. They are all really restaurant sized portions of their foods, and unless you have to feed that many people, make sure you scale appropriately. I doubt that I'll be able to recreate their delicious foods at home, but I'll definitely try. I highly recommend picking up the book if you can. And until I see another reason to pass this by, it'll continue to be a stop on our trips up north.
(5)Ryan M.
Looks like a standard diner, menu is far from it. Best gluten free menu I've seen. Great service.
(5)Tom O.
Just everything. Great service, great organic food, friendly people all around. Oh, have I mentioned the desserts? They're great! Big enough to share easily and be satisfied (though I never have!). Treat yourself when you're in Duluth and eat there!
(5)TandM S.
Local fresh ingredients, very very good. Bacon and sausage from Jones farm is a must

My first 5 star restaurant review should as lengthy review as the ones that pulled me to this gem, but I'll keep it brief. As many have pointed out, this ain't no looker on the outside. It's a remodeled something with a fairly simple sign in red font with 'Duluth Grill' and possible flames at the bottom; but yelp isn't about graphic design. So husband is giving me the complete side eye as we are parking. I'm optimistic; it's gluten free and it has a pretty high rating. We just went the opposite direction of our destination on 35 so it has to be good. Inside is still a diner with counter seating on one side and tables on another. It's cute tho and I'm pretty sure we are not in a diner with waitresses named Flo. It's about 7 and a hostess takes down our name, but it's just a fake out and we get a table right away. Enough with the play by play. The menu is fresh and organic, locally sourced fare. I don't think you get to meet the meat prebutcher, but there is a huge menu (looks like breakfast all day which is my kind of place) gluten free options, flexatarian (wasn't sure on that one), entrees, burgers, salads, lots of tasty looking food. The asian peanut burger caught my eye with peanut sauce, sriracha, avocado and an egg. The wild rice meatloaf tempted as well as a wild rice melt. I ended up with the peanut burger but with a wild rice patty and beer battered fries. Husband ordered the gluten free chicken quesadilla. Our food came out pretty quickly and it was awesome. My wild rice patty was huge and all the accompaniments were perfect. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his quesadilla. My fries actually did have a nice beer flavor and homemade ketchup. At the end of the meal, we discovered the fries were really tasty with the sour cream from husband's dinner. He doesn't even like sour cream. I wanted to try one of the coffee drinks or the pumpkin dessert, but I had nothing left. Overall, this place left me nothing to complain about that would knock off a star. Questionable exterior and goofy sign is made up for with attentive service and delicious food.

OMG hands down a 5! This place is just a great spot to eat. Had the Paella and Pepper Bison tacos and finished with a great piece of banana cream pie. Service was fantastic too. If you pass thru Duluth the place is a must stop.
(5)Heather T.
Ate here once before and did not care for the food at all. We weren't impressed by burger and pasta dish that we had. The place was very packed and hard to find parking as well.
(1)Kelly K.
We are a mostly gluten free family and were very impressed with the selections! It's very rare to find a GF quesadilla on the kids menu, but they have one! My boys were so happy. The kids meals also came with gorgeous fresh fruit plates that included melon, blueberries, banana and strawberry. I had the adult GF chicken quesadilla, and it was very obvious that they use fresh, local ingredients. The only downside is they do not have a liquor license.

We checked this place out for my husband's birthday. A Monday night and there was brisk business; we like more imaginative food and my husband is a cook. He checked online and found the menu interesting. It's a local favorite with fresh, locally grown foods; they even have their own garden for produce in the summer. He had the bone in lamb shank gyro and sweet potato chips. He said it was really good but he would have seasoned the lamb with some garlic and spices, as it was pretty plain and could have had more flavor. But you have to give them credit for even having lamb around here. I had the bean and hominy corn burrito. Our server, Valerie, a very nice individual with pink hair, recommended it over the wild rice patty melt (she said theirs was better than Grandma's wild rice burger), and said she teaches a class on hominy. Well, I eat grits so that wasn't a big deal. The bg deal was that she waited until after it came out to mention that sour cream cuts the heat it packs. I am familiar with this, and there were items on the menu mark as "spicy hot;" this burrito had no warning written or verbal that it was going to be hotter than the surface of the sun in flipping July!!! I like a nice kick of hot pepper but this was like having the business end of a flaming blow torch in your mouth!! She said it was the chipotle BBQ sauce that is evidently liberally incorporated into its every morsel, and poured ontop of it. The hominy and the while thing may have been good but it was way too hot to tell. I just want to warn you that unless you live to eat really hot food you will want to avoid or opt out of the BBQ sauce. The coffee was very good, full bodied and strong. I'm going to try the wild rice patty melt next time.
(4)Sidelaker M.
For breakfast, try the corned beef and hash -- it's homemade (they even cure the corned beef themselves (so really made from scratch!). Get the cinnamon roll too! Definitely recommend this place if you are in the area looking for a meal. This is a unique place...think upper end country kitchen. It was an old trucker stop. Great menu selection, everything is homemade, lots of organic options, and unique items.
(5)Jill P.
Good variety and good food. The plates were enormous. Next time I will share so i have room for dessert!
(5)Anna C.
This is the BEST place EVER. Everything is homemade, almost everything is grown there or local. There are also so many options for all different diets and they are super flexible. They make amazing beet and raspberry lemonade, ratatouille, and browny sundaes. The food is large portions and cheap.
(5)Mark F.
Maybe being from Texas this is just not my deal. Had the spring rolls. That was the highlight of our meal. Great homemade peanut sauce. Interesting mint saucr. The spicy dishes are definitely not spicy. One person had curry lamb. The meat was excellent. The sauce ok. The ban ten sandwich had a mayo siracha sauce. Mayo? The quinoa stir fry was good but the waiter warned spicy. Not.
(3)Brian L.
Soooooo good! Fantastic food and excellent service. I think most of the other reviews hit the nail on the head. You have to eat here!
(5)Penny S.
This is a wonderful restaurant. If you like to eat healthy, don't let the name get in the way. I have never been to a restaurant anywhere in the world that accommodates so many different types of diners all in the same place. Just fantastic! I SO wish we had one of these restaurants where I live. If you're passing through, as we were, it's perfectly situated right off the freeway. This is THE restaurant to stop at in Duluth. We so regret not stopping at Duluth Grill on the way to the Boundary Waters because we opted for a lake-view restaurant. At least we caught Duluth Grill on the way back down. Starting with dessert : Rhubarb Crisp with Ice Cream. Wish I could have this once a week! Don't miss this if you enjoy berry-type pies. Multi-grain pancakes were five star. The real maple syrup deserves a sixth star! Cobb Salad was delicious. We shared a bowl of creamy tomato soup. Not overly creamy and not salty. Well sourced food that is sometimes organic. If you care about these things, check out their menu and rest assured if you find something you would like to eat, this place will make it well. Duluth, you are so lucky to have this gem!
(5)Raffi M.
I still cannot believe it took me five years of living in Duluth to find this place! This will be one of the main reasons I will miss Duluth; the food, the atmosphere, the service... it's all outstanding. I decided that after visiting countless times, I owe an update to my initial thoughts. I've been here so many times (many more than my amount of "check-ins"), and every time I come I have the best experience. I don't know where to start with Duluth Grill; the service or the food. I'll start with the family and staff that make Duluth Grill possible. Seriously the best staff I have come across. The waiters and waitresses are friendly, outgoing, personable, and accommodating. They always have smiles on their faces and take the time to get to know their customers and value the time they spend with them. The family that runs this restaurant is always either in the kitchen or out in the dining room with the patrons. The family is humble and proud of what they offer to the Duluth community. Their mission to provide all home-made, healthy, organic, and sustainable options really stands out and makes Duluth Grill the most unique restaurant in the area. On to the food; incredible. It is astonishing that they can make mouthwatering breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day long while being consistent, quick, and affordable. The menu offers a wide variety of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. If I wrote about all the menu items I've tried, I assure you that this review would be entirely too long (longer than it is already). Some of my favorite breakfast entrees here are the caramel apple french toast, the curried polenta skillet, the duck omelete, their huge pancake (literally falling-off-the-plate huge), and the caramel and cinnamon rolls (also ginormous). Be sure to try one of their unique smoothies to accompany your meal (the Healthy Elvis is my favorite). Every day they have a different special, such as the fish fry on Fridays and the turkey dinner on Thursdays. For lunch and dinner you can't go wrong with any of the burgers or entree items. Some unique burgers include the Asian peanut burger and the Bahn Mi burger (duck patty). For dinner you must try the turkey dinner on Thursdays. If Thanksgiving food is your favorite, this is the dish to sink into with warmth and comfort. Your choice of white or dark meat, gravy, amazing stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, and your choice of sides which can include crashed sweet potatoes; all amazing and all on one plate. Some other dinner highlights include the pot roast on Sundays and the wild rice meatloaf dinner any day of the week. The red flannel hash is the must-try side (hearty, flavorful with all of its components, and something you won't find elsewhere). If you try the red flannel hash or some crashed sweet potatoes, try them with the Huny-Rika sauce. This sauce is absolutely incredible; I would go out of my way for this and it goes really well with many of the menu items. Dessert is a whole other thing here. The small pies are amazing to share (banana cream pie and apple pie are the top choices), but my favorite has got to be the piping hot apple crisp. The oatmeal crunch and the gooeyness of the crust and apples combined with the most amazing scoop of ice cream make the apple crisp the perfect way to end a meal. If you're a big fan of Duluth Grill, they now have their cookbook available after all the hard work it took to put this thing together. The owners are incredibly proud of this book, and they should be! With the full-color pages and hard cover binding it is gorgeous. The photography is spot on and the writing style really captures the heart and warmth that the owners and chefs put into their food. The little sparks of humor throughout, combined with the snippets of the Duluth Grill family story really make this cookbook something to cherish. Thank you Duluth Grill for all the memories.

This is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. They get almost all their ingredients from local farms. They tell you the exact farms different stuff came from, all there meats are raised humanly. They pick some of their veggies fresh from there parking lot garden. They have lots of organic, gluten free, and vegan options. It doesn't look like anything special, but it is. They have great loose leaf teas, great food all around, and great service. My dad asked for the house dressing, and it turns out all the dressing were made in house, and the ones we tried were fantastic (the red pepper vinaigrette was our favorite). If your in Duluth you have to try this place you won't be disappointed. The first time I came I got the industrial burger. It was different from any burger I've ever had. The sriracha aoila sauce on it was amazing, and it was huge, and delicious. My wife got the vegan ratatouille, and said it was the best vegan dish she's had at a restaurant so far. The fish Tacos we're also really good, and filled with flavor.
(5)Holly H.
The cheesy chicken melt was fantastic! A short wait on a Saturday at 2 pm surprised me but it was worth the wait!
(5)Sarah L.
We stumbled upon this ultra hip diner in the Motel 6 parking lot. What a find! When we realized that it actually seemed upscale with its Vegan, local and Gluten free options we thought getting a table on Mother's Day would be impossible. Not true-within 15 minutes we were happily seated. THey were super crowded and yet super attentive, always filling out coffee and checking in with us. I had some lovely scrambled eggs with homemade jam and peanut butter on sourdough bread and my friend had a salmon omelette with a side of kale. All of the food was delicious. I will be stopping here when in Duluth again for sure! What a find!
(5)Michael H.
If you are a conscious food eater and organic food fan, you must try this place. Not the best looking place, but the food makes up for it. A bit diner like, but great.
(5)Beth W.
My first time here and I was impressed. Stopped for lunch. I travel to Duluth for business. The staff are friendly and checked back often. Makes you feel that they value all customers. Food was excellent and price average.
(5)Aubrey L.
Stellar! We were "those people" who showed up for dessert 5 minutes before they closed. But they were so very accomodating and they dessert was spectacular! I HIGHLY recommend "When Pigs Fly" dessert... oh the combination was heavenly!!
(5)Nate A.
Greatest "Duluth" food around. Awesome veg options. Everything is well executed. Love the huevos rancheros.
(5)Kyle C.
Duluth Grill is amazing! Very creative cuisine. They grow their own veggies and use as many local sources as they can. Very approachable- none of the snobbery you usually get with ethically sourced food! LOVE them! Fantastic fast friendly service every time!
(5)Aron J.
This is a staple place for my wife and into visit. The skillets are amazing. Also if you are a fan of duck confe try it in an omelet.... Mind blown. Along with great breakfast options they have a fantastic scotch egg as well. Great service would reccomend this to everyone.
(5)Sharon S.
Fantabulous food and excellent service! Casey was a super attentive server. The coconut cream pie was the perfect finish to our already amazing meals!
(5)Amy S.
Tried the quinoa curry bowl and tarragon ice cream today ( also had my all time fave red flannel hash) and was wowed, as usual. I just love this place. You cannot go wrong! On top of the amazing food, the service is always top notch!
(5)Andy K.
Great Iconic gem that I would not have tried but for the recommendation of local friend. Great service huge menu for breakfast and lunch. If you like corned beef hash you need to get it here.
(5)Annette A.
Fantastic! My fiance and I were in town for a wedding and were shocked to find this place packed at 11:30 on a Friday, but then we heard that school was out that day and it all made sense. We had to wait about 20 min, but once we were seated, the service was fabulous! The ingredients are all local, so local that most of the vegetables are grown in their parking lot! I had a breakfast scramble (forgot the name) and he had some oh-so-healthy french toast. Both dishes were awesome! The french toast was like a giant cinnamon roll got together with toast and created a baby, yum! My scramble was much healthier (more my style) and almost as tasty :) If I'm ever in the Duluth area again (not sure why, but who knows!) I will definitely be coming in again.

Drive by Duluth Grill and your first impression will probably be: "This looks like hundreds of other places we've passed on the road over the years. Pleasant enough from the outside but a mystery as to whether the food will be good, bad or indifferent." But the parking lot was almost full, even though it was an hour and a half past lunch time and our nephew and his wife swore it was "wonderful and should not be missed", so we turned into the lot. The first clue Duluth Grill is going to be something special is when you notice that the planters outside the doors are filled with herbs and leaf lettuce and an occasional flowering plant. Inside, it was crowded but the hostess found us a cozy booth and handed us menus with a welcoming word and smile. Second clue: The menu has lots of standard roadside cafe fare but all are described with words you seldom see on said menus. 'Cage-free organic eggs' jumps out at you right away but others are also there: 'Flexitarian' and 'No-gluten', 'Curried garbanzo bean polenta', 'Seven Grain Porridge', Hummus, Pesto.... and suddenly I was excited to be at Duluth Grill. Thank you Brian and Tammy! Our nephew had said almost as an afterthought that the desserts are "great" and our niece told me I would LUV the banana cake. I enjoy dessert, but most generally do not indulge, preferring to spend my calories on savory rather than sweet. But, after seeing the menu, I decided to trust Tammy on this one and told our nice server that I was looking for a menu item that would not be too filling so I could save room for dessert. She smiled and pointed out the Soup and 1/2 Sandwich or Salad combo. Three soups were on the menu that day including Lentil, Vegetable-Beef and Chicken Noodle. Sandwich selections are Turkey, Roast Bison or BLT. Now, soup and sandwich may sound sort of boring, but I was not disappointed or bored. The cup of Lentil soup was hearty and filled with large chunks of veggies and my turkey sandwich had actual slices of carved, juicy turkey breast layered on whole grain bread and stacked high with slices of tomato and lettuce and a cup of mayo on the side. Hubby saw Rhubarb Crumble on the menu and decided to order Soup (Vegetable-Beef) and 1/2 a BLT. He complimented the soup which is high praise from him and it did look very tasty, again with big chunks of beef and veggies. The Banana Cake at the Duluth Grill is absolutely unique among desserts. First of all, it is so huge it probably should come with a warning label. Three layers of moist cake served warm and layered with sliced bananas, whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. 'Amazing' is an over-used word but in this instance it really does apply. I was only able to eat about half and took the rest with me for a snack at our motel. Hubby's Rhubarb Crumble served with vanilla ice cream included cranberries and he must have loved his too since he asked for a to-go box for the sizable amount left after he had eaten all he could. Duluth: You are so lucky to be able to visit Duluth Grill any time you want. As for me, I only wish I was triplets so I could have tried three different menu items on our visit. And for the record, a visit to Duluth Grill is a permanent part of any trip plan we make in the future to that area. Heck, it MIGHT be a travel destination all by itself!

We eat here every time we are up in the area. We've never had a bad meal breakfast or dinner. But their breakfasts are hands down some of my favorite breakfasts anywhere. Service is always competent and friendly. We also appreciate they source as much of their food locally as they can (even down to a parking lot garden).

This place is the best restaurant I've been to. Ever. Fine dining included. The staff is friendly, the food is unique, delicious, and healthy, and the prices are affordable. I ate there twice while on vacation from Missouri and was so glad to be able to start my long trip home with a healthy meal. I took the Orange You Glad smoothie with me and bought the cookbook. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Duluth!

Started going here when we moved to West Duluth and yeah yeah say what you want but I loved living in West Duluth! After 4 years of college life and rentals it was a welcome change and you find great spots like Duluth Grill! This is a great diner that prides itself on being fresh, local, and organic and they deliver on those promises. They grow a lot of their own herbs that they use and vegetables. Make their own jams, jellies, dressings, and did I mention their food is bomb? I looked over their menu today because my eating habits have changed since I ate here regularly and I think I could still eat like a queen if I went back. They have a wide variety of gluten free and vegetarian choices that could easily be modified to fit any lifestyle. They even have a vegan omelet that looked out of this world!

What a wonderful place! We discovered this gem while driving through to the Arrowhead region. It was so good that we made sure we stopped on the way back south. Don't miss the Ratatouille!
(5)Scott C.
You don't need to be a vegetarian to enjoy this organic/locavore restaurant's Ratatouille, and even if you're a committed carnivore, you won't be disappointed. Chock full of roasted veggies, flavored with olives and fresh goat cheese, and served over baked polenta, it is rich and flavorful. We also had the Lake Superior Whitefish, which we didn't love quite as much. The wild rice pilaf on the side is great; the fish itself was a bit bland and the balsamic vinigarette on the salad is too tangy.
(4)Hucky K.
I had veggie Mac and cheese, Lake Superior whitefish, and pumpkin spice cake here. Everything tasted good especially the Mac and cheese. Service is great, too. I highly recommend this place.
(4)Ashley T.
This a five star restaurant for sure. My husband and I were in Duluth last month for our honeymoon and thought we stop here for dinner one night. We never heard of this place before and had no idea it was on triple d. Best food ever. I had the gluten free Mac and cheese and it was heavenly so creamy and tasty. My husband had the patsy and loved it. Also the homemade guacamole and salsa were fabulous. The bacon blue cheese coleslaw was amazing. The staff were so friendly. We will for sure be coming back on our next trip. I also loved that they use local produce and meats.
(5)Wanda M.
The clientele is a scene right out a movie being filmed in the Midwest. But the food is good too.
(4)Megan S.
The biggest problem I had was trying to decide between so many appealing options on the menu! Very happy with my food, as was everyone in the group I came with. Service was great! Everything came to our table quickly even though we had a large group and many orders. Our server was friendly, lively, courteous. I will definitely be back whenever I'm in Duluth. I can't wait to try more of their unique menu. I definitely recommend this place--duluth's best kept secret.

After running in Grandma's Marathon, we were looking for a restaurant a little off the beaten path. One member of our group had seen this place on the Food Network, and based on our experiences with other restaurants on the network, we were expecting a little hole in the wall restaurant with little seating, but thought we would check it out anyway. To begin with, when walking into this restaurant, which is a little off-the-beaten-path, we noticed the fresh vegetables growing outdoors. We walked in and despite having a group of 8 people, we were able to be seated immediately and our server could not have been more delightful, despite our marathon-mush minds and clear directions needed at each step. After arriving at the restaurant for dinner around 7:00 at night, we were delighted by the menu and enjoyed all aspects of our meal. The number of choices was a little overwhelming -- I think we each had about ten items we wanted to order. In our post-marathon haze, we contemplated ordering one of everything, but then decided against this and moved forward in choosing a few menu items. We started with onion rings as appetizers. They were phenomenal. In need of a slight grease, these met that need, but did not overwhelm us with the amount of grease in the rings. When it came time to selecting the entrees around the table, a variety of menu items were ordered, and each person raved about their meal. A few members of the group ordered the pasty, which is similar to a pot pie, but in a more calzone format. Those who ordered this loved the menu item (a few ate their leftovers for breakfast next morning and it held up well). Another individual at the table had breakfast and french fries, both of which were enjoyed. I ordered the thai burger. All day I had been craving beef and this was a delicious form of it. We enjoyed the local ambiance of the restaurant, the commitment to homemade food items. As several of us work to eat less processed food, this seemed like a restaurant where we would love to eat every day. The extensive menu would give us a long time before we would need to start cycling back through the menu. In short, this is on my list of must-go places in Duluth. It was delicious and nothing about the menu or experience disappointed. If you haven't been, check it out. Since I don't live in the area, I was glad to have purchased the cookbook and look forward to recreating several menu items at home.
(5)Diana E.
FABULOUS!!! Been here a few times now and the food is always superb. Pancakes are tasty as are their scotch eggs. I had the pasty this last time and it was also good. I thought the gravy was a little flat but it was still good.

We used to go here fairly often mostly for breakfast but the last few times have been disappointing. For some reason, every time I order Eggs Benedict, the English Muffin is never toasted and that really changes the dish and not for the better. Not a good texture! The last time we went a couple weeks ago, I started with a cup of Vegetable beef and barley soup. Very under seasoned and bland but after I added S&P it was actually quite good. I ordered the Reuben and upgraded from fries to homemade onion rings. It was horrible and not like any Reuben I have ever had, which is at least 100's. The marble rye bread itself would be very good, but they seem to put some kind of oil on their grill that tastes absolutely terrible and the bread soaked it right up like a sponge. Next the corned beef, what very, very little of it there was, was extremely dry and tasted like roast beef. Not even a hint of pickling. It was mostly a huge pile of red cabbage, not kraut. Maybe a quick pickling attempt, as one does with onions. I don't know. It was just very nasty and unpleasant flavored. I love red cabbage kraut but that is not what this was. If there was any Thousand Island dressing on it, I did not see it or taste it. It was just absolutely horrible and inedible and overpriced at $12.50. The waitress forgot my onion rings and brought them out about 15 min later. They were cold and extremely greasy. The grease tasted like it had not been changed in a very long time. Had they been hot and fried in clean oil, I do think they would have been very good. They had a panko breading. Husband had the Beef Royal Hamburger. He thought it was just ok but since I could not eat my Reuben, I tried some of his. It was far better than what I had, but I often find that grass fed beef can be quite gamey flavored and dry and this was just that. Inconsistency in flavor is one major drawback of grass fed beef and so I always prefer corn fed beef. It was $14.50. I hate to give them such a poor review but it is what it is. It's still a diner and it is really hit or miss depending on what you order. They get an A for effort as they have really tried to take it upscale local but it is quite overpriced. Stick with breakfast here. They do that best. If you get Eggs Benedict, tell them to toast the muffin well. Avoid any grilled sandwiches as the icky grill oil soaking into the bread has been a problem there for many years.

What a wonderful experience! Warm, inviting, scrumptious, flavoursome...everything you would want for a good time out! It was packed, which just shows if you make great food, people will follow! The owner came out specially to answer our questions on how the dish was made, and even printed it out for us!
(5)Ron R.
Excellent food and service plus a nice wine selection. Will definitely stop back again on my way to Thunder Bay.
(5)Kade K.
After looking at the menu online I was surprised when I showed up to find a small (and heavily crowded ) diner. I almost left, put off by the casual atmosphere, but stayed for the variety of chef prepared vegetarian options. The food was good, and you can definitely tell it's fresh. They also cater to all kinds of dietary restrictions. But don't expect plush booths and candle light.
(4)Jeremy F.
Great food, friendly staff, many choices, and with a Duluth decor. Eclectic crowd to boot. Don't miss it'
(5)Jon S.
Be patient when you try this place. It will be worth the wait. Their breakfast are as good as anyplace I have been in the US. Great service
(4)K D.
Great food for reasonable prices! My most favorite place to eat in Duluth. HUGE portions, delicious food. Though, the atmosphere of it was a little weird since us being the only dark-haired people were stared at when we took our spots and when we left...
(4)Jessica A.
I CAN'T believe that I've never eaten here until this week! Yes, I've read all the amazing yelp reviews...but I was lazy, people! Plain ass lazy... when I'm staying downtown, i don't event want to get on the freeway or go up the hill to eat. I want close. BUT.... you must make the Duluth Grill an exception. Since I was headed home, i stopped off the 35 and had some dinner. Specifically the "Superior" fish sandwich and fries, and coffee. The fish was crusted... not greasy at all! So delicious... The bun was tasty, homemade tartar sauce, beer battered french fries (i think) -- and get this, HOMEMADE ketchup! That was awesome... oh wait, NO - the best part was a sliced pickled green tomato!! Elaina was my server who flat out rocks! (Thanks!!) And when i told her that the green tomato was the bomb, she brought out a small cup of a bunch of them!! Alakef coffee... i think this may be local? Pro's Excellent variety of menu options Conveniently located off the freeway Large restaurant with lots of tables and booths FREE WiFi! Amazing service
(5)Aaron P.
I went to the Duluth Grill because it was one of the few places up north that had a vegetarian friendly menu. I can't speak to the omnivorous entrees. Cons. - The wait can be long, especially on the weekend. And, you will probably have to wait in the parking lot. However, the wait list is efficiently managed by the hostess. - Don't get seated by the bathrooms in the corner. Its weird. Sometimes other customers don't adequately dry their hands and you get dripped on. Just wait for the next table. - The food is a bit on the pricey side for a diner, but it is better food than the average diner. - The crowded, fun atmosphere probably is not appropriate for a romantic diner or business lunch. - Steer clear of the sweet potatoes. They sound super amazing, and they are fine, but other sides are better. Pros. - Three staff members at the Diner recommended the wild rice melt. "Wild rice?" I thought. "Well, here goes!" I said. That sandwich was DELICIOUS! I wish you could here my raving through the screen. Really, don't judge it by its name. - Helpful, courteous staff. - A lot of variety on the menu that can accommodate any dietary needs. It was GREAT having several real vegetarian options on the menu. - Everyone in our party really enjoyed having a healthier meal on our vacation after cheese and fish fries.

Awesome breakfast & coffee! This is now a favorite stop in Duluth, excellent menu to satisfy a variety of likes & tastes. Wait staff is friendly, fast & fantastic! The Scotch Eggs are house made , chorizo in the huevos scramble is also house made & yummy! Between our eggs benedict w/red flannel hash & huevos rancheros scramble all hunger was enjoyably satisfied. The lunch menu looked fantastic too, next time thru Duluth.

Stopped by for a quick bite to eat after a drive up from the twin cities! I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious food. The place is definitely pretty quirky but has a relaxed vibe. We got a table pretty quickly. I ordered an the basil pesto omelet and my date got the eggs, bacon and French toast. Serving sizes were very manageable and food was good!
(4)Jenny C.
We came here after reading race reviews of the place and had to wait for almost an hour. But it was well worth the wait. Every bite was delicious, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. The service was also spectacular and the place was FULL of character. Already miss it.
(5)Ninja D.
I am moving my review to only a 3 star for a few reasons. There are large volumes of people that come in and out. There will be wait on the weekends. The food has lost a lot of its soul as they have become too commercialized. Prices have gone up too since last year and you have to pay extra now for the pancake or french toast. Breakfast is still the best option on the menu.
(3)Mark M.
Another great breakfast at the Grill. Their omelet plates are hearty. They don't skimp on fillings and use quality ingredients. Their service is friendly and attentive. My only complaint is that they're a bit pricey. A few bucks less per meal would give them a 5 star.
(4)Peter S.
Stopped in for dinner with my girlfriend when I was in town for work. Had the pasty and some curried palenta. Banana creme pie for dessert. All of it was excellent, and the service was good as well. Highly recommend for somebody looking for a casual dinner with good food.
(5)Kelly R.
I got breakfast here a couple of times in December and January. The red hash doesn't have any potatoes in it, which might be obvious to other people, but....to me, I guess I thought it was beets and all that other stuff plus potatoes. It was still kind of tasty, but it was really undercooked when I got it; most of it was hard in the middle. The pancakes aren't very good. The waffles are SO GOOD. Real syrup! My heart sings!!! And real orange juice! Is this heaven?? The curried polenta omelet is gross. Like anything you get in a cheap restaurant in Europe that has "curry" in the name is what this tastes like. *That* kind of curry. Gross. It's what you get from the grocery store when you buy a shaker of something yellow called "curry powder". And I'm pretty sure that's what they used to make this ill-conceived omelet. The ratatouille is soooooooooooo good!!!!!!!!! omg!!!!!! Goat cheese is my friend. I had my one and only Duluth celebrity sighting here! Al Franken was here for breakfast, and no one was making any big thing about it. Because we're so used to famous people coming around all the time...

This place takes fresh and local food to new heights, beginning with the definition of fresh and local. Some places means it was picked today, maybe yesterday, and didn't travel more than 100 miles. At Duluth Grill it may have been picked minutes after you order from one of the many raised beds that line their parking lot. Sometimes, this really does matter. The food is not all innovative. It offers some standard dishes and preparations. But even these are excellent. And if you aren't completely happy with what you got, you should tell the waiter or waitress. They've always gone out of their way to make everything perfect for us anyway! The bison dishes are good, but some (like the chili) have flavors that overpower the mild taste of bison meat. Get the bison rare or medium rare; longer cooking even of ground bison dies it out, and don't put mustard or ketchup on the burgers or steak sauce on the steaks. The bison steak is superb with just salt and pepper. The broiled walleye was excellent too, lightly seasoned (probably paprika, but not sure) and the traditional wild rice side dish. You could tell this was very fresh fish! I'll definitely visit again on my next trip to Duluth.
(5)Marty G.
Omg everything about this place is awesome
(5)Susan A.
The atmosphere is American cafe. The food is more elegant than the atmosphere. The restaurant accommodates vegans and people on gluten-free diets. However, there was nothing vegan on their menu that I couldn't make easily, cheaply, and better at home. Their vegan burrito was dry. The sauce on a vegan noodle dish was so spicy that it was unpleasant. Salad with tofu? Good, but I can make that at home. For people who eat flesh and/or other animal products, the restaurant is probably great because the restaurant features some unique, probably quite tasty items (such as scotch eggs) on their menu. I think very highly of the people who own and run the Duluth Grill. Their local/organic ethic is commendable. For vegans, however, there are other restaurants in Duluth that offer tastier, more unique dishes.

We go to Duluth yearly ever since we honeymooned there years ago. We discovered Duluth Grill from driving around town and checking out the city in general (not just the touristy canal park area). The parking lot raised bed gardens and big metal chicken were what attracted us at first to dine there. As everyone has said, it's packed at all times. Be prepared to wait. We've been several times, and the quality of the food, the service, and cleanliness of the restaurant have been great each time. We haven't had a bad dish yet, and we've tried several. The bison burger is great, the breakfast scrambles are great, the pasty is great, and the coconut cream pie is to DIE for. I try to get a different menu item each time we go. As far as parking, it's tough. They have a large parking lot, but since they have converted part of it into a garden to supplement their menu, they don't have as many spaces as it appears, plus it's a very busy place. Patience for parking and seating is a virtue, rewarded with superb food!
(5)Char S.
What a gourmet treat! The lovage lemonade is out of this world and the grass-feed beef burgers ... Gluten free buns, kale with green curry sauce ... I'm so happy!
(4)Kelly L.
This place is great breakfast, lunch or dinner. Lots of local ingredients. They have an extensive menu and I've tried many items. The meals are all decent, but I've yet to find one that blows me away. Busy place, but runs smoothly. I've always had good service.
(4)Emily O.
Food was incredible. Defiantly didn't expect the great quality, product and service looking at first glance. Server was Alissa an was on top of her game and very sweet. Had the corn beef and hash... AMAZING! Guy knew what he was talking about on diners, drive ins and dives... Highly recommend finishing off the meal with a Carmel roll.
(5)Ryan T.
I have only been to Duluth Grill once, and I can say without a doubt that it is the best restaurant in the area that I've been to. It had a diner-esque interior when I was there, with an open kitchen. The menu was creative and had quite a few options and dishes that you don't typically see in this area. Everything that I sampled at our table was enjoyable, and the service was very friendly. If you're in the area and looking for somewhere to eat, I strongly suggest going to Duluth Grill. Support the local real restaurants like this, for the love of God. Seriously, not a single bad thing to say about this establishment.
(4)Gael R.
Hello lover! I went here with my partner and my mother-in-law and we were all blown away with everything from the service, ambiance, and the food. I got the corn beef hash skillet plate - I'm not a breakfast person but this plate made me a believer! I have simply never eaten something so wholesome and delicious quite like that before. Isn't that what we want when we try new things? My partner got the "mexican" style skillet and that was friggin flawless, too. Their Beet Lemonade almost made me cry it was so delicious. Above all, the prices were fair for the quality. Duluth is a great get-away, and the Duluth Grill is a big part of that.
(5)Mere W.
Yum! Stumbling upon the little cafe on yelp really made our trip to Duluth! I got an omelette and my hubby got the blueberry pancakes. Both were made perfectly and the fact that everything is local/organic made it even better. Even the mugs were local - all of them were different and decorated by a local artist. While we waited for a table we enjoyed looking through some of the displayed local items. There was a wait (Saturday around 10 AM) but it wasn't too bad and the service / food made it worth it!
(4)Lisa D.
So excited to find this place when I was staying at a hotel in Proctor, MN on business. Local, organic, lots of veggie options too. Even an option to make my smoothie dairy free with coconut milk. Yummmm
(4)Kristi C.
I love the city of Duluth and make regular day or weekend trips several times a year. This will be one of my stops for now on! Easy on & off 35, this gem sits in what appears to be a rather commercial part of town. Had I not heard about this place on one of my favorite Food Network shows, I have to admit I probably would have passed it by. With decor from the 70's, this was still a very comfortable, down home and welcoming vibe. The service was friendly, our coffee cups always filled without even a nod in the servers direction. Loaded mac n cheese....these folks have it figured out. Put all the yummy crispy bacon, roasted red peppers and mushrooms ON TOP of the cheesy goodness. Then, the holy grail of desserts.....bannana cream pie. They assemble each individual "pie" when ordered. A perfectly flaky crust, cradling a most delicious vanilla cream pudding....topped with whipped cream and homemade caramel sauce. When the server came back and asked if everything was "OK", I volunteered the fact that if I weren't in public, I would have licked the plate. Seriously, it was that good.

I've dined here more than a dozen times. At first I was turned off at how greasy the breakfasts were. I had heard how great and natural everything was, but it seemed like nothing more than a greasy truck stop with high prices. A year or so later I tried again and found the dinner menu (Still expensive) to have a few more options that were a little more geared towards the good natural food I had expected. This trend lasted maybe 6 months in which time I enjoyed many dinners here. A few weeks ago I tried their red flannel hash again. STILL greasy. Could not eat all of it. Last weekend I arrived later, post lunch rush and tried the fish taco, which seemed to be a frozen patty fried up in butter. Tasted like rotting fish. It was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. To make matters worse we had horrible service. The waitress, Alissa, literally threw our plates at us. When I discovered a problem with the fish she was no where to be found and didn't come to check on us at all. This was off peak hours, so the place was pretty empty. Lots of staff just sitting around talking. When we did flag down a waitress who grabbed the manager, our waitress was snippy and short with us. The manager explained the fish comes in once a month and sometimes it's good and sometimes not. In the end I was still charged for the meal and left with a bad taste in my mouth. I want to believe in this place, I really, really do, but they really need to cut back on the grease, and please PLEASE get a better source for your fish. It's not like there isn't a pretty decent sized lake near by. I would think twice about eating here again. Maybe in a year or so I'll try again.
(2)Abby K.
Key lime pie is crazy good. And beet lemonade is refreshing.
(5)Jenna S.
I thought this place is overrated, the food was just OK and the menu is just ... long. The parking lot garden is pretty cool tho, if it wasn't for their pies and latte I would probably give it two stars. I have to admit they definitely served up one if the best pies I've tried, the crust was perfect and the filling was on point. The vanilla latte was good as well, probably one of the best I've had, I highly recommend trying those. I would give this place another try I am ever in the area again, maybe I just ordered the wrong things.
(3)Donna W.
This place has a huge menu with a ton of choices. We didn't have a great experience with the food as only 1 of the 4 of us was crazy about what they ordered, but the restaurant manager was more than willing to do his best to make the situation right. We ordered the Caramel Apple French Toast and everyone loved it. We ordered a Cheesy Chicken Sandwich Melt and the chicken was really, really dry. We ordered the meatloaf and it was ok, but not amazing. We ordered the Lake Superior Whitefish and three of the four of us thought it was disgusting. Literally one bite and we were done. I thought the broccoli tasted ok but my boyfriend thought it tasted funny. We ordered the Crashed Sweet Potatoes and I told the waiter that I just wanted a side order portion, not a full appetizer, but we got charged for a full appetizer. They were good, though. The french fries were awesome and the deconstructed potatoes were also good. Our waiter was pretty good and helpful. We told the manager that we didn't want to pay for the chicken sandwich or the fish since they were both terrible and he was VERY nice about it and said they are not in the habit of charging people for food they didn't enjoy and he said they do a ton of business and apologized that it was an off day for our meal. In addition to not charging us for the food we didn't like, he threw in a free banana cream pie and that was very good. Overall, the service was good and the food was not. This place has had such rave reviews, though, and they have so many choices that I would try it again.
(3)Morgan A.
The food here is very good. It is a little bit more expensive than an applebee's or whatnot but it is certainly worth it. We were all satisfied. We had the garlic Gouda burger and my bf got the reuben and we shared and we both enjoyed one another's selections. The taste of the meat seemed much fresher than most other places and the seasonings seemed to be very good and the wait staff was quite friendly and knowledgeable about what was on the menu and how the various things on the menu were. The next time I visit Duluth, I will return.
(5)Ed P.
We waited about 45 min to be seated bc this place is popular. The food was sinfully good and healthy. I broke out of my "healthy" self and had the cinnamon French toast...this should be illegal by the way. Wife had breakfast stir fry sticking to a delicious and healthy option. The wait was worth it. YUM!
(5)Carey G.
My friend and I tried the Duluth Grill as a recommendation and were not satisfied. She ordered the baked white fish, which came out over cooked, dry, and fishy tasting. My burger was over cooked as well. It seems that this restaurant as well as most others in Duluth are not compatible to any within the Twin Cities other than chains. We wouldn't go back.
(2)Austin R.
The everything skillet is the best deal and incredibly good. All fresh ingredients, most food for your money and it comes with a top of the line cinnamon roll.
(5)Isabel C.
Amazing! Was in Duluth recently for a wedding and found this place on yelp for breakfast. Delicious organic diner! All the diner food you want and the healthier options are so so good. I wish I was in Duluth more often so I could go here. Friendly and fast service. Amazing fresh squeezed orange juice. My girlfriend got the vegan omelette even though she's not vegan and it was SO good. Do yourself a favor and go. MAKE SURE TO GET THE CARAMEL CINNAMON ROLL HOLY CRAP DO IT
(5)Allison M.
This place is awesome. Revamped from Duluth Embers, the interior could use a better atmosphere but the food rocks. Every time I come home to Duluth I go here at least once. I'm a vegetarian and they have a ton of options, as well as for my meat eating family. The coffee is good, the breakfast, the lunch and the dinner. All good. It's always very busy though, so don't go if you're starving and can't wait a little while. It's organic "hippyness" just goes to show you the people of Duluth care about clean, awesome food without having to fuck the environment. Yum!
(5)Victor T.
This place does live up to it's reputation. Friendly hippie wait staff, great locally sourced menu, made in-house recipes. Good coffee. I even like the diner look. The entire staff takes great care and pride in their work. We may vacation close by so we can eat here for every meal.
(5)Richard B.
The Duluth Grill is probably the most popular restaurant in Duluth. The restaurant has been on the Food Network's Diners, Drive ups and Dives. They serve buffalo in a variety of ways. They also focus on local/organic ingredients. They even have a vegetable garden in their parking lot. The food....it is tasty. I have been there about 10 times and have a tried a variety of things all of them have been good. You can not go wrong at the Duluth Grill.
(4)Adrienne H.
Such a fantastic treat in Duluth! As a vegan, I didn't expect to eat well when travelling to this area, but was pleasantly surprised. Biggest surprise: Bragg's Liquid Aminos spray bottle on every table! We use this liberally at home, so this made us all happy. I was here with my Omnivore family. Hubby had a burger, kids had Belgium waffles and french toast, I had Besan Chilla - UnQuesa Dilla, not only did they have many items on the menu marked as vegan, they also had many gluten free.
(5)Ronald R.
Two of three of us ordered the proclaimed "hearty" portion of pot roast. Hearty it was not, it should have been truthfully billed "meager". $16 for a approximately 5 oz of pot roast was not worth it! Maybe it was because it was very busy and they had to reduce the portion size. The other person had very overdone whitefish. Has success spoiled the Duluth Grill?
(2)J S.
My husband and I have been to this restaurant 3 times. Everytime we are impressed with the food. I like the fact that they are Eco friendly and growing their own veggies. I mean what other place makes their own ketchup? Large variety of choices and something for everyone on the menu. Wish we lived closer so we could come more often. Excellent place!!
(5)Danyel B.
We've eaten here twice now-both times with a camper in tow and me begging my hubby to find a place to park it because I had to eat here! It's little pricey for a "diner" but so worth it for the quality. I've had the wild rice burger and the lamb shank gyros. Fantastic. Onion rings are great. And the banana cream pie is worth a stop alone. Can't wait to go back.
(5)heerain p.
Another place I tried based on Triple D (food network)'s recommendation. And yes, this one did not miss. I had the Bison pot roast. Soft to the extent of not needing a knife at all! This is stick to your bones food. Filling and flavorful. The wife had Fish tacos. The fish was fresh and the pico de gallo was lemony & zesty. Even the Double Chocolate Cake was scrumptious. The best kept secret - house made salad dressings. I can vouch for the Raspberry dressing! Kid friendly place located close to downtown. You cannot go wrong.
(5)G G.
Consistently excellent food and service. The diverse menu has something for everyone. I cannot say enough. It's a must-see!
(5)Aric W.
Went here for brunch and the place was packed. Had to wait about 20 minutes for the table but well worth the wait. Everything about this place is special and done with tremendous and deliberate effort and care from the hand made coffee mugs to the all local, all organic ingredients. Every town should be lucky enough to have a place like this. I had the corned beef hash and eggs along with the red flannel hash. Even though there were a few service gaffs during the meal (they forgot my red flannel hash), it still didn't take away from the overall experience. You can taste the love and care this establishment has for serving the best food they possibly can. I would eat here at least weekly if I lived in Duluth. A true gem.

Great food. Place had diner feel with a short wait. Staff was fast and attentive. This is what dining out can be when the management tries harder for your benefit. Mac and cheese was heavy but great comfort meal. White fish and wild rice takes a bit of time to prepare, but was perfect and came with a fresh salad with vegis from parking lot. Great experience in local, flavor right dinning. Will return.

Great diverse menu. Wonderful breakfast and well worth the trip. Locally sourced food and a fantastic staff make this a must visit on our trips to Duluth.
(5)Tod L.
For $11 the corned beef hash was puny, nondescript, and came with two of the smallest eggs I've ever seen, but at least they were poached for about 10 minutes (waitress quickly brought two properly poached eggs). My wife had the famous Pasty. She ate about half and didn't even want to take the rest home (never happens). We both had so much looked forward to our first visit. Neither of us said much of anything during the drive home but we finally admitted we were not impressed with anything except the very decent service and probably wouldn't go out of our way to return. Final thoughts: Over-priced, over-rated and way over-hyped. Two stars for the service and for aiming high.

Had a spectacular lunch here! Surprised me how good this place was because from the outside it looks like an average local diner. I had the 'everything skillet' I died and went to heaven finishing my meal with the apple crisp. I wish I had two stomachs to enjoy all they have to offer!!! I recommend this place for friends, family and anyone who wants a great meal! There is something for everyone
(5)J B.
We visited on a weekday around lunch with my wife and 3 boys. My wife and I both had the Dakota Dip, which is a french dip sandwich only made with roast bison. It was really good. The boys had chicken sandwiches and bison burgers. Everyone raved about their food. Unfortunately, we were too full to enjoy dessert. The restaurant is a typical diner type, though nicer than average. It has tables, booths, and you can also sit on a swivel stool. We would definitely go back!

Everything is excellent from the service to the food

Our family went here while visiting Duluth for the marathon. The food is outstanding! Try their fish tacos or for a little more heat order the stuffed pepper tacos. The red smashed potatoes are awesome! Finish with the banana cream pie...it's worth the extra calories! If you have a larger party you can call 30 minutes ahead and they will reserve a table for you. We need you to open one up in Minneapolis! Great restaurant for all ages and reasonably priced!

Yes, I came here because I saw it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. But, I also came here after it was recommended by a friend as well. No, Guy Fieri is not my friend, although it would be pretty kick-ass if he was. Anyway, this place was hopping and popping at 7 PM on a Saturday night; so much so that we could only get a "soft reservation"; apparently they don't go hard. That's what... OK, I'm just gonna stop there. The first thing I noticed about this place was it felt a little...off. It looks like a Denny's (or Perkins I guess), but the staff were wearing these tie-dyed shirts, and the walls are plastered with funky art that doesn't really belong in one genre. I do remember staring at a painting of a bird that has its leg up. It wasn't disturbing, just how I described it is. But, that didn't really detract me from the menu, which was plentiful and really hard to decide on. I had the Big Bold Bison Burger, and my friends ordered a range of items, from the Mac & Cheese (which was life-changing, it turns out) to the fish tacos, to the Dakota Dip. I heard rave reviews around the table, and I thought my bison burger was pretty good, a perfect medium rare. I thought the crashed sweet potatoes, what with it being buried in brown sugar and powdered sugar, was a little overkill, but still I ate most of it happily. The star of the show, no doubt, was the banana cream pie. The crust was perfectly crunchy, the custard wasn't overpowering, and the bananas were fresh. And, courtesy of our overstretched-but-always-nice server, we got a scoop of ice cream to go along with it.

Our family has eaten here several times for dinner and breakfast and we've enjoyed it each time. The quality of the food is very high and it tastes just the way you'd expect it too. The price is in the medium range. The building itself used to be an old Perkins or Dennys(or something of that ilk), so don't expect anything fancy. This is fresh food prepared daily, not something from Sysco or Upper Lakes Foods. The service is quick and the staff is very knowlegdable. If I could, I'd give it 4.5 stars.

Duluth has always been one of our favorite places and in the days where our wanderlust and enthusiasm exceed our dollars we spend many nights in the adjacent Motel 6. We knew of its previous incarnation as an Embers and subsequently dismissed the Duluth Grill as a result. Our food expectations are much higher than those for our accommodations. This was a tragic mistake. We were blown away by the quality of food, variety of options and outstanding service once we finally got over ourselves and gave it a shot. Upon entering you are greeted by the largest counter dining area I have ever seen and an assortment of booths. To the right is a more traditional dining room that manages to fit in an impressive amount of seating without being crowded. Their menu is extensive and it will take some time to peruse. There is a large flexitarian/vegetarian presence on the menu with interesting and thoughtful offerings if you're into that sort of thing. I thought the buffalo tofu seemed really intriguing but in the end I wanted an actual meal and my eyes were set on the banana cream pie so appetizers were out of the question. My husband ordered the smoked salmon and dill Havarti omelet which he assures me was delicious. The salmon comes from the Northern Waters Smokehaus and was plentiful. For his sides he chose the french toast and red flannel hash. That piece of french toast was one of the most delicious breakfast items I have ever encountered, and now haunts my dreams. The red flannel hash was hearty and satisfying but a little earthy for my taste. I had my heart set on the turkey dinner special but they were out of white meat so i settled on the cheesy chicken tender melt. Basically, a grilled cheese on crack. So, so tasty. It was so incredibly filling that I was only able to finish half. For my side I opted for the crashed sweet potatoes. These are baked, then deep fried and sprinkled with brown sugar and served with a honeyrika sauce. I would come here just for these sweet potatoes. They were that good. But the pie, oh the pie.....Although we were close to bursting at the seams we decided to power through and try the banana cream pie. There are not adequate words to describe the level of deliciousness contained in this pie. It's served in a gorgeous fluted pie crust bowl, so it's completely self-contained. It has layers of the most luscious pastry cream you can imagine and sliced bananas. Then it's garnished with fresh whipped cream and caramel sauce and more sliced bananas. It was amazing.

It says alot when we visit here and ended up coming here 3 times in one week because our family members who live out here always recommend this place. Especially great for those who are into organic or gluten free foods. Breakfast food served all day, specials are tasty with a different twist on them, salads are humongous, desserts are yummy!
(5)Mallory M.
I waited FOREVER to get a table, was passed up numerous times to accommodate larger tables that came after I did. My friend and I were finally seated and I ordered a gluten-free mac and cheese that came to me as one giant slop in a bowl. Not good food, not good service, not worth the wait and I won't be back.

We stopped by Duluth Grill for breakfast on Sunday after spending the weekend in Duluth. I knew I wanted to try this place after I saw that it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, plus it got great reviews on Yelp. I also really like the fact that they have their own gardens and pride themselves on using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. The first thing I noticed when walking into the Duluth Grill were the "regulars" seated at the counter. You can tell these people come here every weekend. A good sign that this place serves great food. The second thing I noticed was the huge menu. The choices were almost overwhelming. Not only were there a lot of entrees, but many of them came with a choice of hash browns or sweet potatoes; as well as pancakes, french toast, caramel roll, scone or toast! Yikes! How is a girl to choose?? I ended up ordering the Mexican omelet with a sweet potato-style hash and a pancake. The omelet was filled with tons of slightly spicy chorizo, red bell peppers and cheese. It also came with sour cream and homemade salsa. The pancake was huge. It was probably enough for a meal on its own. I could tell it was made with whole grains and it had a sweet flavor, almost like a corn cake. It was served with homemade lingonberry syrup and I also asked for a small cup of their delicious homeade peanut butter. Since I went with a big group, I was lucky to try a number of other things. My favorites were the lemon cranberry scone, which was perfectly flaky and had a nice, light flavor from the lemon. My hubby ordered the huevos skillet, which was quite tasty and had a nice kick from the spicy beans. The caramel rolls are fantastic, and huge! You can tell they are made with tons of butter, and I loved the gooey caramel and nuts. This is a place I will come back to for breakfast the next time I'm in Duluth.

It seems that everybody who eats here raves about it. In my experience, the Duluth Grill was good, but certainly not great. At my most recent meal there, I had the steak and eggs and my partner had the gluten-free mac & cheese. My steak and eggs was actually pretty disappointing, especially given that it was one of the most expensive items on the menu. The steak, which I ordered medium-rare, was delivered to the table considerably rare, and further, was mis-butchered -- it had a tendon right in the middle of it. The eggs, ordered over easy, desperately needed some salt, for it seemed that they were entirely unsalted. The red flannel hash was pretty earthy and tasty, but the side of fruit was pretty uninspired. As for my partner's mac & cheese, it had the potential to be quite delicious. Given a bit stronger cheese and some salt, it could have been fantastic. The gluten-free noodles are quite impressive; I'm not sure I would have guessed that they were not made from wheat. Overall, the mac & cheese was decent when salt was added (especially bites with the delicious bacon!), but more-or-less bland without it. On the plus side, the service that our waitress provided was excellent, and the strawberry lemonade was possibly the best specimen I have ever tasted. Yummy!
(2)Jeff W.
I have loved this place ever since I first tried it a few years ago. I'm lactose intolerant, and they have options that work for me as well as people with other food allergies as well. My favorite things are the French fries and the homemade ketchup!
(5)Jennifer M.
Duluth Grill is a very unique place to visit. My biggest compliment for them is that I like their homemade ketchup, and I HATE ketchup. They have a great menu with uniquely Northern Minnesotan additions. Sometimes the spices they use confuse me a little, but as a whole, I highly recommend trying this place out once... or twice... or all of the time.
(4)Jennifer F.
Don't let the outside of this restaurant fool you. It looks like it's nothing special but the food is out of this world. We discovered the place on a recent family vacation and we loved it so much that we ate there twice in two days. First off I have to mention the great service. It seems like a lot of the customers were regulars and we saw several of the servers greeting customers by name. Our server was friendly and did a great job answering questions we had about the menu. The menu is large and varied and the only problem we had was choosing what sounded the best. Our food came out quickly and when there was a very small problem with one of our orders our server corrected it quickly. The food at this place is incredible. Some standouts from our two visits (a dinner and a breakfast) include the fish sticks from the kids menu (HUGE pieces of real fish served with a fantastic tartar sauce) the peanut butter and jelly french toast, the scotch eggs (I was skeptical but so glad I tried it), the cinnamon rolls, the wild rice meatloaf and the chocolate cake. Really everything we had was delicious though. You get a lot of food for your money here and the prices are really reasonable. The decor is a little dated but who really cares about that? Most of the time you'll be closing your eyes and making yummy noises anyway. We told our server we would be making the trip back to Duluth just to eat there and I'm not ashamed to admit that we weren't totally joking.
(5)Thomas S.
Mechanical repair necessitated an unplanned overnight in Duluth. Called a good friend, a command officer with the fire department for a breakfast recommendation and he said "Hands down, the Duluth Grill!" I visited and would concur.
(5)Anna P.
Whenever I visit home we usually go here a couple of times for breakfast. It is typical diner food, but they have committed to using local and organic produce. I notice they now have a garden out front (awesome!). There is an entire gluten-free menu and a lot of the options are inherently gluten free. The staff is knowledgeable. They have a gluten free bread there that is delicious. I only wish there was gluten free pie!
(4)Richard Y.
My meal was thoroughly mediocre, though I can't speak to the dishes with meat. The homemade hot chocolate was good, better than my meal (curried polenta I think, don't order it). Sustainable, local and pretty meh.
(3)Michael G.
Delicious, fresh food with some nice twists. Delicious homemade sauces. Wonderful vegetarian and vegan options. good service. Favorite restaurant in Duluth.
(5)Natalie C.
Do not leave without the fried tofu app, whitefish or pastie. Fresh squeezed juice, loose leaf tea, vegetables grown on site and all of the sources, farms, families and producers are all listed on the menu so you know where every ingredient came from. The service matches the menu, super educated staff!
(5)Shaun R.
I don't need Guy Fieri to tell me that this is the way that every diner should be run. Quality local fresh ingredients, a mix of simple and creative menu options, and great service. From the herb gardens in the parking lot and on the roof to the awesome "crashed sweet potatoes" what is not to love. Don't be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes for a table because the word is out on this local gem, I hope that other restaurants take notice.
(4)Tara J.
Duluth Grill really has something for everyone! They cater to diner-type meat eaters, more adventurous "foodies" and vegetarians/vegans alike. Expect to wait a few minutes for a table, as this place is BUSY! Diners, Drive-ins and Dives featured this joint in an episode and it's easy to see why. The menu is HUGE. As a vegan, you are lucky to have one menu selection. This place has so many that it makes it hard to choose. I can recommend the chips and dip, buffalo tofu strips and curry lettuce wraps. Be warned: the portions are enormous! If you don't want left-overs, think about splitting dishes with a friend. Also, try the strawberry lemonade - YUM!
(4)Tamara H.
I can't say enough good things about the Duluth Grill! It's a place I MUST visit every time I'm back in Duluth. I'm a picky, mostly-vegetarian eater, and their food simply rocks. It's delicious, nutritious, local, and beautiful. The prices didn't shock me at all as I am accustomed to eating out in NYC. The staff is extremely friendly, and service was smooth like organic butter. The coffee is amazingly good, and if you like the adorable hand-made coffee mugs they're for sale! It doesn't look like much from the outside, and it's just off the highway next to a somewhat dilapidated Motel 6 and a gas station, but don't be fooled by appearances--a fantastic dining experience awaits you inside!
(5)shayna s.
It's your favorite local diner...with a twist. It's the dishes you know and love, but made more modern. The homemade from scratch taste is what makes this place unique: from the ketchup to the banana cream pie. You MUST try the banana cream pie, it is delicious! They offer a wide array of food choices including gluten free and vegetarian options. The service was great and prices very reasonable. Will definitely be back when visiting Duluth again.
(4)Tamara J.
We decided to try this place due to the high ranking it had on yelp. This place certainly lived up to its name. We went there for breakfast and I had the everything skillet and my husband had the rancheros skillet. All delicious and fresh ingredients. Before we left Duluth we stopped back and got the banana cream pie to go and it was worth the stop. I was the best banana cream pie ive ever had. This place will be a stopping place from here on out when in Duluth.
(5)Nanette S.
I want to commend Duluth Grill for their flexitarian and gluten free menu. I've started following Eat to Live and am very happy to find a reliable source for healthy meals when I come to Duluth (about once a month). The garbanzo polenta roast tomato stew was great as was the garbanzo quesadilla. And my non-ETL companions always find good food too. Thanks for such a great menu!
(5)Andrew W.
Creative, healthy, affordable, locally-sourced ingredients, including a dedicated garden space in town and giant planter boxes in the parking lot. This is a gem. I have had the huevos on the last two visits. Awesome. This is a place that any food-focused person must visit while in Duluth.
(5)Patrick A.
First time visitor and will definately return. Breakfast all day is awesome...had the huevos rancheros and give it a solid "A-" prolly coulda been 3 cage-free eggs not 2 (but i have a big appetite). Awesome menu selection and super coffee. Staff very friendly and fast service for the noon-hour.
(4)Dee C.
One of the best restaurants ever! Worth the drive from the UP. Everything we have had here is excellent. Friendly and attentive staff. I am vegan and this restaurant is a real treat. Even bought the cookbook.
(5)Jamey M.
AMAZING food and great service. Cinnamon Roll French Toast was out of this world delicious.
(5)Eric S.
The Duluth Grill is one of those down home comfort food restaurants that has a surprising twist, they actually have a really funky menu with a lot of original dishes. They use as many local ingredients as they can and food overall is just downright good! They serve breakfast all day and have a huge breakfast menu. Besides having great breakfast food they have everything from burgers and fries to fish tacos and some of the best pies ever! They also make their own ketchup and have Tabasco at every table so you don't have to ask for it, why haven't more restaurants figured this out yet? They also have organic food and gluten free which is nice for people who need that option. The staff is as friendly as ever and they make you feel at home. PS, they also have additional parking in the rear!
(4)Ute B.
I was more than positively surprised. On the outside, you'd never guess what treat you're in for. Down-to-Earth 70s-ish retro decor makes for a comfortable, low-key environment. The menu blew me away; creative, lots of variety and plenty of organic and local ingredients. Great, healthy options for a vegetarians and vegans. The quality of our food was top-notch; service outstanding, quick and friendly. Breakfast is phenomenal and served all day. I'll be back next time I'm in Duluth!
(5)Katie T.
Food was just ok. Ketchup was house-made and tasted off. This place was on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives so I really expected something better. The cinnamon rolls passing our table looked really good, so if I went there again, I would get breakfast!
(1)Stefany C.
I wanted to try a few restaurants I've seen on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on our road trip last week, and we decided to stop in Duluth for a late lunch on our way to Minneapolis. I've had breakfast here a few years ago, and remembered it was delicious. Dinner was amazing! The fact that they chose to serve local food, make almost everything themselves, and grow their own veggies in the back was awesome! I had the chicken bacon melt sandwich, with a side salad with cilantro lime vinaigrette. Simply delicious! Hubby had a bison burger and fries, and my 3-year-old had a grilled cheese, fries, and organic chocolate milk. Best meal I've had in a while, hands down!
(5)Tori M.
Wow... I'm kind of shocked. Duluth Grill is in West Duluth, which automatically made me suspicious. We almost drove away when Google maps mistakenly said "Embers" after the restaurant name... But I am so glad we went here. This is the ONLY truly edible food I had in a restaurant in Duluth, and they source local ingredients and sell local preserves/honey/wild rice etc. for decent prices in their "lobby". I had amazing wild rice meatloaf, with yummy mashed potatoes (skin on! yessssss) and tasty broccoli. Boyfriend had wonderful walleye with lemon and a wild rice timbale that was perfectly moist. As if we weren't stuffed to the gills after that, we had a delicious and warm apple crisp that had just the right balance of salt in the mix and sweet with vanilla ice cream on top. (They have an extensive GF and vegetarian menu as well, so they really are covering all the bases and covering them well). I will be thinking of this meat loaf with longing. I am already planning my next Duluth trip and this is my first stop for sure.
(5)A. R.
The beer battered fries were amazing as were the crashed sweet potatoes. Had the Bison burger which was really tasty. For dessert had the chocolate cake which was a bit dry, but others at my table split a piece of coconut cream pie and they said it was heavenly. Our waiter wasn't the most patient. He was friendly, but when one of us asked for a beverage refill he went away before checking with anyone else. He could have saved a few trips back and forth if he had slowed down a little. Overall I would definitely go back. The burger and fries were worth the visit.
(4)Laura B.
A totally unexpected treasure - every restaurant should be run this way. Produce grown on site, local ingredients, sustainable, committed to workers rights and fair pay, AND positively scrumptious. Particularly great for vegans, vegetarians, and foodies of all stripes.
(4)Karin R.
5 star food and service. One of the owner's at the Lake Avenue Cafe (also fab food and service) recommended this restaurant. We wanted a place that had early morning breakfast on the weekend. We've been here 3 times in the last two days. Highly recommend the duck omelet, Mediterranean omelet, Duck confit (not a fan of the beet/cranberry side), and Breakfast stir fry. We eat whole/foods/low carb and they have a large gluten free section that can easily be adapted along with other items on the menu. Many items including the peanut butter, dressings are made from scratch. Very good coffee and loose leaf teas. Prices are reasonable considering the quality and use of local ingredients. We had 3 different servers, each was very friendly and quick to say, "yes, no problem". We will be back again and again.
(5)Gerry S.
Great little local find. Food is locally grown and sourced whenever possible. I had the corned beef hash, which they brine, spice and prepare themselves. LOADED with flavor. VERY busy Denny's-style place, but everything that came out of the kitchen was fresh, hot, and looked great. You are NOT going home hungry.
(5)Susan H.
Traveling frequently to northwestern Ontario where we have a cabin, we pass through Duluth - frequently at lunch time - and are always looking for a good place to eat. We have found several o.k. places, but thanks to Yelp we found the Duluth Grill and will undoubltedly never need to look for another place! The service was great, the food fantastic. As others have said - diner food but locally sourced ingredients, fresh, homemade. Fantastic! We had blt's with fries - regular for my husband and sweet potato fries for me! yum. We will be back - everytime we drive through Duluth at mealtime!
(5)Richard M.
So many positives: * They grow some of the vegetables in the parking lot (as their t-shirts advertise). * They use locally grown food. * They often vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. * The place is very reasonably priced. I really like their version of the pasty, but they have lots of great dishes. Note, this is a casual place, its in a former Embers (think redneck Perkins), so the decor is nothing special, but if you are looking for a really great family restaurant/diner that does great local food you have found the right place.
(5)Ruthie H.
Organic and gluten free! Love love love this place!!
(5)Marlene H.
The physical plant doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled, the food is great and the atmosphere is very family friendly.
(4)Laurie V.
When you are traveling with a baby quality carry out is a great thing. First we were feeling lazy in the Inn on Lake Superior and ordered from Grandma's which is just a short walk away. The food was so microwaved and stale that we asked for a refund and started over. I have been hearing a lot about this place on-line so we decided to take a quick drive down 1-35 to pick up our meal. I ordered for us based on the fine opinions of my fellow Yelpers and was not disappointed. The meatloaf was so fresh and flavorful. A generous portion that easily could feed two people. Loved the gravy and the home made potatoes. Red flannel hash-never had heard of it but it was good! Also tried the Walleye wrap. This is a nice way to get that fresh walleye flavor but spiced up with amazing apple wood smoked bacon. Sweet potato fries were good-probably would have been even better if they hadn't travelled down I-35 before getting in my belly. All in all we got fresh, quality food for under $23.00. Nice.
(5)Annie A.
Organic. Free-range. Local. Gluten free options. Local business supporting local businesses and their community. Love love love!
(5)Nate K.
One of the great things about living in MN is that there are tons of great places for breakfast. Here, breakfast isn't just two eggs and a few strips of bacon - no, sir, it is oversized pancakes, farm fresh eggs, fluffy omelets stuffed with meat and cheese and veggies and crispy hash browns. Center stage in Duluth is Duluth Grill. This semi-famous Duluth spot has a number of solid dishes from an oversized roasted turkey and mash potato sandwich covered in gravy to breakfast skillets to fresh carmel rolls to homemade mini pies. However, its best feature is the service. Duluth Grille will always make you feel at home.
(4)Susan K.
Great food, homemade, locally bought products used. Also vegan and Gluten free selections. Had excellent Lasagna there, homemade and better than what I've had at italian restaraunts.
(5)Conor C.
Overrated and not in the best part of Duluth. If you are featured on a television program (other than one about restaurants to avoid) I would expect a whole lot more of a "wow" factor.
(3)Matt M.
There is always a person that will try to bring the overall rating down by claiming it was bad lacks this ,waited to be seated or paid a Dollar more than Denny's these people are also the people that give Denny's a 5 Star and love Cookie Cutter Chain places , fresh organic original recipes with a Friendly staff they get you in and fed fast you can wait to seat but it's worth it if you hate to wait hit a Drive thru!
(5)Beer G.
I just had the best breakfast I've had in years here. Their corned beef hash as real chunks of corned beef in it? (Why is this a rarity?) Their omelets are great. The peanut butter and jam are both home made. Service was great and I can't wait to go back.
(5)KL L.
This place was pretty awesome. The service was amazing. We came in with probably 20 people and they were very accommodating. The cornmeal blueberry pancake was too good... I couldn't stop eating it... I had the salmon salad ( the smoked salmon came from Northern Waters Smokehaus), it was refreshing and simple. My boyfriend had the baked eggs with a ton of things in there. Quite the surprise. They brew their own iced tea, which is always a plus in my book! There were so many other things to try, the menu's huge, everything looks delicious. Lots of options for gluten free, vegetarians and vegans. They also grow their own veggies! On our way there my bf and I watched the episode of diners, drive-ins and dives to get us ready for this place haha. If we're ever back in Duluth, we are hitting this place up again for sure!
(4)Lacey P.
Oh my god. Everyone I know is freaking out about this place, and we don't even live in Duluth. I like that they use local organic ingredients, have a massive menu, and have a gluten-free section. They also have a huge smoothie menu. And it's in an old Embers, so it's super cute inside, not all fancy-pants like it could be. Yep, it's my new favorite resturant in Duluth.
(5)Nicole S.
Seriously one of the best restaurants in town. A large variety of gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian recipes - one of the few places in Duluth that offers vegan menu items!! :) They are also locally supplied and organic, which is another huge bonus. The prices aren't astronomical either, as some might expect from a local/organic diner. Last time I was in, I found out that they fry up the french fries/sweet potatoes in the same oil as the meat. I was shocked! I spoke to a manager to let her know that it should be advised to customers that this is happening!! She understood, and encouraged me to fill out a comment card. As we were enjoying our food, unexpectedly the kitchen manager came to our table to inquire about the "fry issue". I was shocked and pleasantly surprised that she went the extra length to speak to him, and that he came out to speak with us personally about it. :) Yet another reason why I love the Duluth Grill. He explained that they simply don't have the room to have separate friers, but they'd be happy to set something up in the back to fry them separately if we wanted to have fries that are free and clear of any animal product whatsoever. DG for the win :) They won me back with this! As for the food, amazing. No question, hands down, some of the best food in Duluth. It's a diner, so there's a little bit of everything. And it's all good. The most recent time I was in, I had the pesto pasta, which is gluten free and can be made vegan :) AMAZING! Also had the red flannel hash, which is something you must try! So tasty. Everything I've had there has been delicious. Some of the best breakfast in town with lots of options for your specific diet. Their tea is excellent - especially the stuff created by the local herbalist shop... I think it's called I M Unity tea. Mmm. They have coconut milk for tea but no soy or almond. Oh! Try the avocado ice cream! It's vegan and so refreshing after your meal :) I strongly encourage the Duluth Grill to start offering a vegan pancake!!!! :)
(5)Russ H.
This place has good food. The atmosphere is cool too. But, the service we had was SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW and it was not busy in any way, shape or form. The menu is large and very eclectic, but they also charge you through the nose for that as well. I guess when I picture eating at a place like this I don't expect to walk out with a $50 tab for 2 adults and 2 kids.
(3)Nichole B.
This place is amazing! Pulling up to the building you think, "huh...this is the place everyone is raving about?" This is definitely a "don't judge a book by it's cover" sort of place. The inside is bright, clean and fun; lots of colorful artwork. The staff is quick, thoughtful and great at their jobs. They really work as a team, which is refreshing after dealing with so many servers who treat their tables like islands that only they can visit. The food is out of this world, hands-down it is the best meal we had in Duluth. If you visit here make sure to get the pie. I don't care if you are full, or not a sweets person (really? are you really not a sweets person? how is that even a thing?). The pie is to die for, with its flaky, crunchy crust and creamy filling. Drooling. The bison burger that I got was great, their beer battered fries were delicious and my friends raved about their huevos rancheros. If you are anywhere near Duluth you need to get to this restaurant; you will leave happy and stuffed.
(5)Jocelyn B.
Awesome food, good service. Everything I've had there has been delicious :)
(5)Joey J.
This restaurant kind of reminds me of a Cameron Crowe film. You take a look at the preview, or in this case the menu, and see all sorts of things that get you really excited. You read all the different location from all the locally sourced foods and start to salivate a little. Then your plate arrives and after finishing your reaction is akin to "Did I really just spend two hours of my life watching Elizabethton?" That's not to say the food here is bad. On average, it's generally pretty good actually, and very innovative for diner cuisine. The buffalo tofu (essentially fried tofu served with buffalo hot sauce and homemade bleu cheese dressing) is a very interesting twist on a traditional appetizer. The girlfriend swears by all the walleye dishes she's had here (fish tacos, walleye dinner). The caramel roll is truly something to behold. And I really liked the wild rice patty melt. The biggest problem is somehow the dots don't always seem to connect here. The first time we went, I ordered the wild rice meatloaf and it was served to me without gravy or vegetables and it was very, very dry. The second time we went, the girlfriend didn't get the drink she ordered. The last time we went, the tomatoes in the omelette I ordered tasted fishy. All these things have sort of added up, as at one point in time the woman and I planned to try everything on the menu and now...not so much. In conclusion, it is just like a Cameron Crowe film*. You can definitely do a lot worse. But if you look around a little, you can do better as well. *Save Say Anything.

Duluth Grill has high-quality food for everyone, is socially and environmentally conscious, and is a gold-star restaurant in the Duluth area.

I have eaten here twice now. Breakfast is very good, something for everyone. The menu has dishs/twists others don't. Red Flannel hash must be tried! For dinner I had Spicy Thai Pasta with chicken. My SO had the Buffalo burger and loved it. Company had Jalapeño burger and also loved it. Lots of good looking dishes on the menu. Wait staff Kylie had a great personality and checked on us often. Hard to go wrong here.

Great place for families and kids! Excellent menu with all sorts of old favorites as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. Really, really good food. Highly recommend it to both locals and those passing through.

I found this to be a pleasantly updated diner. Everything was like the best of both worlds. Old school diner and newer breakfast joint too! They have lots of veggie updates and I really enjoyed their sweet potatoe hash. They played The Pogues, Johnny Cash, and The SMITHS! That gets a point by itself!

After reading about the restaurant being featured on Food Network tv, I really wanted to go! We went and at 8:30 walked right in. They were busy but seating was available. I was excited when I saw eggs benny on the menu; I was crushed when I asked the crucial question: is the hollandaise made from a mix or from scratch? They use a mix. That was the deal breaker. I opted for the biscuits and gravy. I really wanted to oooh and aahh about the food and I may have been the only one at my table who did not. Portions are generous: my biscuits and gravy filled a dinner plate and looked like there were at least 2-3 sausage patties that had been "julienned" ( WTF?) on top, AND it came with 2 eggs and a slab of hashed brown potatoes the size of a checkbook. Lots to eat. The sausage was good, if spicier than I prefer; the potatoes were good; the eggs were good; the biscuits were good; the gravy was utterly devoid of any taste except black pepper. Salt must be against their religion. Think wallpaper paste. No, I didn't tell them--we'd already waited a long time to get our meals and I did not want to add to that. Shoot me. Kid had the kid french toast and ate it--it's a murrcle! Lady had the caramel apple french toast and took half of it home with her. Lovely presentation, it looked good enough to eat. Guy had the Lotsa Meat omelet and didn't eat all of it - unheard of for him; he was amazed at the amount of meat in the filling. The caramel roll that came with it was enough for two. Other Guy had the plate-size pancake with egg, sausage, and bacon and he was happy enough with it. It's a nice enough place in a very unlikely location for such fare. Clean and bright. Very noisy due to a couple of large groups of noisy men (at least they weren't belching and farting and it's hard to be angry about happy laughter). One other thing: Polenta, by definition, is made from CORNMEAL, not garbanzo beans. Sweet Jesus! Any self-respecting paisan should be organizing a hit for that gaffe. Total was about $60 with t&t for a group of five.

We usually stop at the Duluth Grill for breakfast on our way to and from the North Shore. It always been good, but the recent revamp emphasizing "all-natural" has made it great!

Tried this from the Triple D episode I saw on this show. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't up to the hype either. The Bisapeno burger was good but the bun was soggy on the bottom. The red flannel hash was solid too. My fiancee had the curried polenta stew, which seemed like a half assed Indian dish and there wasn't much on the broth. The turkey dinner special was just okay too. Another thing was the waiter had the sucky job of pitching us a gift card, which there was a pitch on each table to buy. There was also t-shirts and mugs and way too many pictures of Guy Fieri up. I will say the banana cream pie did redeem this place though. That was solid.

You know, this place just makes me so happy! CHEAP great options for all parties. I'm a vegetarian and sincerely appreciate their Tempeh Reuben. It's hard for me to get anything else since it's so delicious! They have SWEET POTATO FRIES too. I would also recommend the buffalo tofu strips! It's all just so fun and unique as far as the options go. Perfect for a big group of hungry, hung over young adults.

Great place for some excellent food!

Finally, a place that takes care of vegetarians AND you can get a great burger. they've also got a section of the menu dedicated to gluten free items as well and take special care to make sure it isn't exposed to any wheat flour or anything else that may contain wheat. All that being said, my favorite thing to eat is the bison burger. Favorite appetizer is buffalo tofu strips. They've got a hot sandwich that was featured on diners, drive-ins, and dives and it's not the hot sandwich your mom used to make! It's tons of meat and gravy piled on bread and it's delicious. Finish it up with a made-to-order personal pies and you'll be fully locked into food coma heaven by the end of the meal!

I heard about this place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I was determined to go but had limited time. I called in an order for lunch take-out. I had one of the best turkey burgers I've ever had. It came with caramelized onions and cranberry mayo. I had to get the coconut cream pie after seeing the pies on the show. Yummy. I'll definitely go back when in Duluth.

I find it hard to believe that someone could dislike this place. Wait you don't like quality ingredients served by a friendly staff? Get real.

Very tasty food and great service! The reviews are spot on and gave the family a sense of direction when breakfast time rolled around and we were confronted with a myriad of difficult choices. I ordered the everything omelette, my wife chose the scotch egg breakfast, and my daughter went with their finest plate of scrambled eggs. Everything was fantastic and the waitress was absolutely delightful. The food is made with local ingredients and everything is very fresh. This is a must stop for breakfast.

Wonderful discovery in a unique part of Duluth! We opted to try breakfast items for our lunch stop. The smoked salmon omelet was packed with delicious fish! Scotch eggs were a fun, unusual item to sample. My sister said the coffee was also excellent. Will be stopping here again when we return from the North Shore. It was that good.

The food was good. However, the service was horrible. The waitress literally gave me the wrong order, and then gave it to another table. My order came well after all other members of the group had their food. We also were in a party of 8. The waitress did not split the check, despite being requested to split it. She then mischarged us, and did not include tax. After running 8 different credit cards, she then informed us that we stilled owed $15 more, due to her personal accounting error. We arguably spent more time figuring out the check than actually eatting. Would not recommend.

A haiku review Because this place deserves it And also I'm bored Not so the nachos Instead order the pot roast Only on Sundays Save room for dessert Or not, I'm not your mother. At least score some roast.

I've been visiting Duluth for about 3 weeks. My only regret is I didn't eat here everyday. This place is sooo good. Breakfast is great, best corn-beef hash I've ever had. The coffee is great. The service is the best! I will miss this place. They have an amazing menu with so many options if things to substitute that there is no way you won't leave happily satisfied. I wish I could give 7 stars.

My wife and I visited Duluth Grill twice on our trip to and from Cook. Overall, a really great experience with good food and a very casual environment Trip #1- Dinner I ordered the Garlic Gouda burger with coleslaw. The burger had a great consistently with it and was cooked well, but still stayed juicy. The wife got the Gluten Free Mac and Cheese, which was very tasty (very good pasta for gluten free). The only downside to this trip was that the onion rings we ordered as an appetizer were very overcooked. We were starving so we were halfway through til the crazy hunger wore off and we realized how "Crunchy" (as my wife put it) they were. Trip #2- Breakfast The Duluth Grill definitely defines itself on its great breakfast. The wife ordered the greek omelette which has a great flavor with katmata olives. I had the everything skillet which is unique that it has hollandaise sauce the brings it all together (and makes me less trashy by not using ketchup)

My favorite spot in Duluth. Local, fresh, organic ingredients. Plenty of gluten free options. Tonight I enjoyed the fish paella made with wild rice- absolutely delicious. I also recommend a pot of tea- their Duluth Grill herbal blend is lovely. I've never had bad customer service here. Managers are present and active in the restaurant. Definitely recommend for locals & out of towners.

What's with all the rave reviews? We ate here for dinner and were hugely disappointed. The over-priced burgers were dry and boring. I had to ask for a slice of tomato to add some moisture to my juiceless patty....the tomato finally came when my burger was half-eaten, after I'd decided my request had been forgotten. Our two preteen girls ordered the mac & cheese from the kids' menu...BIG mistake! The dish was merely pasta swimming in milk with a pinch of cheese sprinkled on top. When the girls balked at eating it, the adults gave it a taste test and, for once, thoroughly agreed with the children. To assuage the girls' disappointment, we ordered them vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce for dessert. Another BIG mistake! When the girls failed to wolf it down, adults conducted another taste test. The ice cream had an extremely strange taste and was literally inedible in our opinion. Perhaps this place is okay for breakfast, but we will definitely not be back for any meal. The slow service, rip-off prices, and LOUSY food left us with a bad taste in our mouths.

This was the very first place I ate at when I moved to Duluth, and I continued to eat here many times over the four years. Service was consistently good, and everyone was friendly. Food was also very consistent from breakfast to dinner. One thing that stood out in this place was the huge portion sizes, however, it seems to be under control now. The only thing I ever had problem with is when I did take out. More than once I forgot to check my bag, and there were missing sauces, breads, or toppings. They were always great and fixed it, and the managers always took into account I had to drive back. Overall, this was a four star family diner for me.

I do love this Place i do not get here often but always amazing when i do. I send people to this place often.

I go back to Duluth a few times a year to visit family, and the only restaurant on our "must visit" list is Duluth Grill. We have never had anything less than stellar food here, and I appreciate their focus on locally sourced, organic ingredients, even growing their own ingredients when they need to. There's always a line for brunch on weekends, but don't let that scare you away--we've waited an hour to get in the door, and it was worth every second. Favorite breakfasts include the huevos with blackened chicken, cinnamon rolls, and omelets served with red flannel hash. For dinner, the hobo soup and bison pot roast are outstanding. Service is always consistently great, the owner or his son makes a point to stop by and say hello and see how everything is/was, and there's always plenty of great local coffee to go around. This is the best spot in town for any meal of the day.

Absolutely loved the Duluth Grill and will go back every time we are in Duluth (that sounds funny but it's meant to be sincere). I'll admit I had low expectations for food in Duluth, Minnesota. This place was featured in Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, but it's so much better than what you would expect from that! Local fresh ingredients, vegetable gardens on site, delicious freshly prepared food (I had the walleye, but it all looked great), and they put a shot of espresso in my coffee to make me a redeye on request. Was a hit with the entire family.

Great great food and atmosphere. Many gluten free options, vegan, vegetarian options. Good price for the quality and portions about what you'd expect - not super huge since the food is basically perfect. I had french toast breakfast platter with bacon and two eggs. Delicious! Don't skip the coffee!
