Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Everything here is doused in cheesey goodness! The chips and salsa are fantastic, the service is good, the strolling band is fun...this is good tex-mex! forget about Done Craplos or Chevys...come on down to the strip mall..order up the perillado?( I think) whatever its called its a heaping plate of grilled mexican goodness. Make sure to split it...its freakin ginormous. $$- you should be able to eat and drink for about $15 per person note- practice your spanish...its fun and the servers will have fun with your spanglish and help you along.

Glad to have an independent Mexican restaurant in the area. I highly recommend the Chile Relleno and Tamales. I'm usually skeptical ordering these because they are rather difficult to make which means not always home made. They are phenomenal and fresh (and yes asked if the restaurant created them from scratch). Good fun place to go in Chanhassen if you're looking to kick back and enjoy some Mexican food.

Best Mexican that I can find in this area by far. Very fast place for lunch, and always good food. I love the enchiladas and burritos there, but the best thing is their queso dip! I have been there 10 times and I always want to try the fajitas but haven't yet because I always see the burrito and can't resist!

Food is mediocre at best. Not much about it was authentically Mexican ...nor even good Americanized Mexican. I don't understand the other folks who rated this any higher than 2 stars. Service was good UNTIL we asked that the sopapillas be taken back and the server (Patricia) got testy. Btw they Absolutly desecrated the sopapillas which should be light, airy, and lightly sweetened. Instead were smothered in honey, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. NOT recommended.

We LOVE Reyz! My partner and daughter love spicy food, and I can't handle anything spicier than ketchup, yet everyone can find something at Reyz! They are reasonable priced, have awesome combinations, and freq. have coupons. The owners and their family members work there, and they are consistently good, regardless of the order. The taste and quality of the food is excellent!

We tried Rey Azteca for the first time today and we LOVED it! The food is good and the service is great!! We had the Parrillada with Shrimp and it was a lot of food :)

great spot. fast, fair prices.

We have gotten consistently bad service at this restaurant. Tonight we sat for 25 minutes before someone asked us if we wanted a drink. We showed up around 4:35, so it was not busy. People that arrived after us were given menus (we finally got up and got our own), water (I asked twice and was never given a glass), drinks, and food. In my opinion, the food isn't better or worse than most of the small Mexican restaurants in the suburbs, but there's no excuse for the atrocious service.

I ate here last night and became sick immediately after. I was running to the bathroom all day today and still feel awful! I have never had food poisoning before, but I think I do now!

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in my life at a restaurant!! After reading reviews, my boyfriend and I decided to go to this restaurant based on their "best margaritas in town." This was by far a lie, or they must be the only place in town that serves margaritas. Before I get into that let me start off with where the bad experience began. As soon as we walked in the door a server brought us to a dirty table, because there weren't any clean tables. This isn't a huge deal but it starts the dinner with a bad taste in your mouth. After this, we had to wait at least 15 minutes until our server, Tony, came to our table. Another gentleman brought us chips and salsa but we were never brought water. When Tony finally did come to our table he appeared very distracted and wouldn't make any eye contact while taking our order. Due to his lack of attention he took our drink orders wrong. I specifically ordered a strawberry margarita on the rocks. He comes back with a house margarita and walked away before I could say anything. After about 5 minutes of us trying to flag him down he quickly walked by and we grabbed his attention to fix it. He then returned with a BLENDED strawberry margarita that had NO alcohol in it at all. I'm really not a very picky person but to mess up a drink twice is a no no. I didn't have him bring me another one because I didn't want to cause a big fuss. My boyfriend however did ask for some tequila since he brought me a virgin margarita. After waiting about another 10-15 minutes after we got our (wrong) drinks, Tony came back to take our order. We were very specific and clear that we wanted steak for the meat in our dishes. When the food arrives mine appeared to be fine, but my boyfriends food had chicken. We then had to send this back, but not after another 10 minute wait for Tony to zoom by our table and us barely catching his attention. The only good part about this is that the kitchen then rushed his food so it came out quickly. Not only was his food wrong but mine was as well. I ordered a chimichanga but was brought a burrito. I was not in the mood to send anything back so I dealt with it since it was at least the same kind that I had ordered. Finally it was time to get the bill and boxes for our most definitely subpar food. We get the bill, and surprise surprise, another mistake! He charged us twice for my meal! But once again we had another 10 minute wait for Tony to be near our section to change the mistake. Tony is the worst server I've ever seen and I have worked in the food industry and gone to my fair share of restaurants with mediocre servers. No one compares to Tony. He refused to look at me when I spoke, and was too focused on his girlfriend a few tables over. To top off this experience I became very ill later that night and the next day. To say the least I will never be going back to this restaurant and do NOT recommend that anyone else go to this restaurant either. If you do decide to make the risky decision to go here, make sure that Tony is not your server!! If I could give this a rating of less than 1 star I would.

Rey Azteca is a really nice little surprise. Tucked in a strip mall in downtown Chanhassen, this is the last place you would expect to find an authentic Mexican restaurant. But sure enough, Rey Azteca is the real deal. Nothing fancy, and an entirely predictable menu, but the food is really good. They sit you down with some good chips and multiple salsas. Then on to any variation of combo platters. I had a couple of enchiladas with a couple of Dos Equis. Delicious. The restaurant is a bit crowded and cramped, but for a lunch or a no frills dinner, it's a fine choice.
(4)Michael B.
The food here is good but not always consistent. The chips, salsa and the white dip are a great way to start off dinner. We usually order margaritas as well which are usually pretty good also. The service can be hit or miss but we have come to expect that. Right now they are going through some sort of renovation and it makes the restaurant feel smaller and tighter. You may have your chair right up to your neighbors. It was also very dark as well. I'm hoping they have more lights once they finish the renovations. All in all, good food, ok service and a good place to have a dinner. I've never had lunch here. The prices do look good or the lunch menu. Suggestion: this is a family owned and run small business and you'll enjoy it more without having huge expectations for a 5 star restaurant. Oh... And get the cheese dip!

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the metro area. Authentic flavor, great variety, and excellent service. We frequently get take-out, and the single portion fajitas are enough to feed my wife and I. Their hand-made salsa is the perfect amount of spicy.
(5)Mark S.
Traditional Mexican food, with a great staff and fun atmosphere. First they start with a traditional red salsa and a white salsa which is a spicy sour cream. Both are excellent. The red is very homemade, because some days are hotter than other. We prefer the hotter! My wife frequently gets the salad with chicken with looks very refreshing and is huge. I have either the chicken with sausage and cheese sauce or the chili verde, which is steak in a green sauce. Both are excellent. Worth the trip. Great traditional Mexican.
(4)Riley S.
Decent Mexican food, but the service is horrendous. I would recommend driving the extra mile to go to a better Mexican restaurant.

Some buddies and I were meeting at Rey Azteca about an hour and a half before seeing a movie at the theater across the street. The restaurant is located in a strip mall and when you enter, the Mexican music filled our ears, but not too loud as to where you can't talk. We sat down in a booth and our server brought out a basket of chips with some salsa and a white sour cream like dipping sauce. Both were fantastic. I ordered a Diet Pepsi and it was refilled when empty. Plus 1! I ordered the enchiladas poblanos lunch portion. Only six bucks. It was two chicken enchiladas with a mole sauce and lots of rice. It was a little bland, but a lot of hot sauce helped that out. It was a perfect amount for lunch, I would have preferred a little more chicken, but overall, very good. My friend ordered a steak dish that looked pretty good. He seemed to like it quite a bit. Our server was great and my meal with a pop and tip came out to $11. Good prices and good food make me a fan.

If you believe this is authentic Mexican food, please look elsewhere. My family is from Mexico and I used to live in Mexico. My parents are visiting for the holidays and I was looking forward to giving them a taste of home. We went here on a friend's suggestion. We were completely disappointed. No horchata; no menudo (on a Sunday); they were out of sangria; the tacos come in pre-fab hard shells. The ranch-styled dip brought with the chips was strange. My request for a mole enchilada led to a cold tortilla, surrounding ground beef (not chicken) and mediocre mole sauce poured on top. The beans taste as if they're from a can. My dad's draft beer was warm. ... The service was poor: The waiter left us alone for long periods, even though only a few other tables were occupied. He failed to bring glasses for either of the bottled drinks that were ordered and I got up to ask for them myself. On the plus side, the flour tortillas used for the quesadillas my kids ordered were tasty. However, my oldest son thought the kids nachos were poor and he left most of it on his plate. My stepmom and I were both sad we didn't just stay in and cook ourselves. Our food would at least have been authentic. Perhaps their food satisfies folks who are used to Taco Bell-styled "Mexican" food. But, please, don't think this is authentic Mexican food.

I was really looking forward to Mexican food and was disappointed by our lunch at Rey Azteca. It wasn't busy and our server was very attentive in refilling chips and sodas. But, it took forever to get our meal. When it came, my order had rice when I requested beans. He took my plate away and didn't bring it back until my husband was already done with his meal. Ultimately, the meal's appearance and taste was bland. It all ran together and didn't excite my taste buds. On the plus side, they do have an extensive menu and it's a nice environment. I will try again, but definitely order something different.

Love this resturant. Totally reminds me of Mexico. I always get the Jumbo Margarita and Mucho Burrito.

Simply AWFUL SERVICE!!! I've eaten at this restaurant before, and the service was never good, but my experience last Sunday guaranteed I will never eat there again. I waited over 40 minutes for my food and only received a partial entree. While watiting nobody bothered to check if I needed a drink refill or more salsa, which I did. Finally, the waiter brought a platter of veggie fajitas, BUT he forgot tortillas, refried beans and etc. that accompany the meal. Also, I did not have any silverware; I noticed other tables getting up to find silverware earlier. He said he would be back, but after 10 minutes I still sat there with a rapidly chilling plate of fajitas, no fork, no salsa, no beverage, no tortillas and no refried beans. It was impossible to identify the manager or get anyone's attention, and very few of the staff seemed to speak or understand English. I left a few dollars to cover the 1/2 basket of chips I ate and left - NEVER TO RETURN AGAIN. This restaurant is text book for what not to do in the restaurant business. It is the perfect candidate for one of those hidden camera/restaurant makeover shows. I would call it my worst dining experience ever, but technically I never had the opportunity to actually dine. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE SERVICE WORTHY OF PUTTING ANY ESTABLISHMENT OUT OF BUSINESS!!!

We can all agree that Midwestern suburbia is largely deprived of ethnic restaurant, much less GOOD ethnic places. I was first drawn to Rey Azteca three years ago when we found a $5 off $25 coupon in our mail. Since then, it's been my family's go-to Mexican place. The food is pretty good, but not the best Mexican I've had (especially considering I go to school in Texas). Sometimes I would even call it a little sloppy. However, the starter chips and salsa are sooo delicious, and the entree portions are huge! We ALWAYS end up bringing something back. Oh, be sure to save some room for fried ice cream. =D Beyond the food, Rey Azteca is amazing at packing in the little things into its compact space that make the atmosphere great. The colorful mural on the wall is beautiful, the servers are always friendly, and you gotta love the mariachi band. I just went back recently, and I'm happy to say it hasn't changed one bit in three years.
(4)Doug S.
Food was delicious but could have done without the annoying mariachis strolling through a small restaurant.

I should note that I am very picky about Mexican food, having been born and raised in the Southwest. I have yet to find a place in Minnesota that really fills the need for authentic Mexican food. That being said, I decided to try Rey Azteca for lunch. I ordered the #1 lunch special to go. The first thing that struck me was the large portions. It was a lot of food for seven bucks. Also, they threw in a bag of chips and salsa, which I wasn't expecting. There was also a side of a white, creamy salsa, which I assumed at first was some type of ranch dressing, although I couldn't figure out why it came with my lunch. The salsa tasted strongly of tomatoes and could have used some more flavor. The white salsa was a little odd, but obviously made in house (as opposed to coming out of a bottle). The chips weren't super fresh, and they were a little thicker than I like, but they could've been worse. The chile relleno was fried in a heavy, thick batter, and while the pepper itself was good (it actually had a very small bite to it, which was surprising) I prefer a lighter, crispier batter. The red sauce was good, but there wasn't enough of it. The beans were tasty. The taco was decent. It came with a small side of tasty guacamole and ample sour cream. The food was okay- for Minnesota, it was actually pretty good. Bit overall it could have used more flavor and more heat. I will eat there again and try more items off the menu before making a final decision. It's worth mentioning that I asked for no lettuce/garnish, and the food was served with lettuce.
(3)Keith B.
Closest Mexican food we can find and overall this place rocks. I'd be lying if I said we ate here once a week, cause we actually eat here twice a week. The Chori pollo is to die for, and the service is great (maybe cause they know us by name by now!) Live Mariachi band Sunday evenings. They even played me an Irish folk song after I told them I was Irish. This place is great and their jumbo margaritas hit the spot!
(5)Elizabeth R.
My friend recommended this joint for good Mexican. She had eaten there before but after we left she said she'd never go back. It was Sunday and the Mariachi singers were there with guitars and such. Cute. But I knew that was not authentic. It was catering to the American's who like Mexican food. IN fact they sang, by request, American songs a few times. UGH! Also no Horchata on the menu. I know I'm not near Lake Street but I was hoping for authentic. I should have known better. Our waiter took our order, my diner partner speaks fluent Spanish and was clear she did NOT want onions. Even I understood her in my broken Spanglish. I asked for a Seafood Burrito, not on the menu but the ingredients were available. He said no but they would do enchiladas with flour tortilla. I asked for my sauce on the side. Not wanting it to be swimming in sauce. The saving grace is the chips and a white dip they serve. I'm sure it was Mexican cheese and spices, yummy! The Guacamole was amazing. Very fresh. you get a small order but it was worth it. Not from a can. At least I hope. thank god we ate too much of the chips cause our meal was very disappointing. When the order came it was not right. Mine came swimming in sauce and drowning in melted cheese. There were so many huge chunks of uncooked onion I could barley find the fake crab to pick it out. Also it did have shrimp but they were tough and chewy. My friend ordered mole without onions and her's too came swimming in melted cheese and tons of onions. The waiter came by and saw us both picking out the onions. He laughed at her and said, " you don't like onions? " She politely laughed back. We had a talk about how we are turning into passive aggressive Minnesotans. That we both should have sent our food back. Neither of us finished our plates nor took leftovers home. She barely ate 1/4 of her mole. I didn't even eat 1 of my 3 enchiladas and it was $12. A bit much for the poor quality. I am sure it's hard to find good non- chain food in the burbs but keep looking I bet a burrito at Chipotle would have been much better.
(1)Andrew P.
I grew up further south with more mexican restaurants than I could ever go to. I moved up to MN about 4 years ago and this so far is the best place I can find for mexican food. It isn't the best but is ok. The fajitas are good.
(3)McLain C.
Pretty solid to be way out in Chanhassan, and it's nice to have a place in striking distance from work. I have only ordered chicken enchiladas poblanos, which is chicken enchiladas with mole poblano poured over as a sauce. This is a nice dish. I've been with friends and they have universally enjoyed their orders as well. There are plenty of Tex-Mex preparations as well as Mexican ones. I like their salsa too. Serving sizes are massive, prices are good, and service is pretty good, though sometimes you may benefit by knowing a little Spanish. Margaritas are decent too :) Recommended!
(4)Leah O.
Great Mexican food! I love the enchiladas!
(4)Brian N.
Sorry to say, but I've visited this place for the last time! I've given it several chances, hoping that they would get back to the great place this once was 8-10 years ago, but to no avail... Their food was especially uninspired & bland. There are plenty of other local places to get real, authentic Mexican food... The staff there just doesn't seem to care & the lady who is at the entrance to "welcome" you, gives you a very unfriendly glare! Not sure what the deal was with that. Anyway, please save your money & try anywhere else. Heck, even the chain Don Pablo's beats this place for food quality!
(1)Clark C.
I liked the inside of this place a little more before they remodeled it. Doesn't matter though there are two must have dishes here the cholo pollo not sure if that's how it's spelled and the enchiladas rancheras. Every time I go to this resteraunt I have to flip a coin to decide which one I want. Great place, service is normally great.
(4)Johnny G.
Been many times. The food is authentic Mexican. I close my eyes and imagine I am in Mexico. I open my eyes and it still looks like l am in Mexico!
(5)Nick P.
We have been coming to Rey Azteca for a few years. The food is consistently great, the staff wonderful and kind. Saturday night might be hectic and the staff is a bit stressed but, they are always wonderful in the end. There are a few guilty pleasures we have when dining out and Rey Azteca is one of the restaurants we love!
(5)Tim O.
Really authentic Mexican food. One of the few unique places in Chanhassen. A really large menu, so everybody can find something. They always have specials too! Great place, check it out!
(5)Steve S.
Not completely authentic Mexican, but close and the price is really good. The tamales were a bit doughy, but everything else was amazing. My daughter had the vegetarian fajitas and the cactus was cooked perfect. All the other dishes (besides the tamales) were amazing and the service was almost a bit too good. It was during a snow storm and there weren't a ton of people in the restaurant and there were about a dozen employees mostly idle and waiting to serve customers. Nice to see a place a bit over staffed.
(4)Dr. Ursus M.
Good food. Good service. I have tried a lot of Mexican food in the southwest burbs & this is my favorite place thus far. The Chimichangas reminded me of ones I have had in the New Mexico area with green chilies. The margarita was awesome!
(5)Aaron H.
Food needs help. This is mediocre Mexican food served at gigantic proportions. If you're looking for a lot of food at a great price, this is the spot. I live in southern CA, so my opinion is biased having some of the best Mexican food in the country. They do have an impressive beer menu.
(2)Nadia W.
Ok, so the food here is really good. It is as authentic as you are going to get in Chanhassen, MN. I'm originally from L.A and coming to this area of MN, where there is less than a 3% Latin demographic... Well I was happy to find Rey Azteca. There is a good sized menu with a ton of different options. I like the chille relleno, mole enchilada, and their fajitas are pretty good as well. Their margaritas are huge! Careful with what size you order, hah. The service here is the only concern - these guys get packed! When they are super busy it can take a while to get your order or any extra attention. If you can deal with that, I think the food is worth it. The next place that I would consider authentic would be in Minneapolis, so this is a definite go to if you want something in the area.
(4)Heidi H.
This is a mediocre "Mexican" restaurant. The menu is too huge. Much of the food is pre-fab. You will get much more authentic Mexican food along Lake street, Midtown Global Market etc. This place reminds me of Chi Chi's. The floor is dirty. It just needs a little refresher. However, even though all of the above is true, I enjoyed our lunch here. Our server was kind and relatively attentive. Our food, although nothing special, was fine and inexpensive. Children are welcomed, not merely tolerated. They have a very reasonable children's menu and they have the crayons etc. with the coloring sheet. We had fajitas and a chipotle chicken dish. Huge portions. Lots of chips and salsa and that weird white dip you only seem to find at Americanized Mexican places. It's not amazing food, but it's fine. Sometimes weird white dip and piles of warm corn chips just sounds pretty darn good. I'd go back if I found myself out in the burbs with my little darlings.
(3)Sheng T.
been here several times.. i want to like this place but just can't due to the compactness of the tables, how dirty everything is, how some of the food has no flavor and just the service overall.. there is this older lady that just can't seem to understand how to take down an order or even help come back and ask if we need anything else.. the rest of the male workers there seemed fine as it seems like everyone has a role in something like seating, bringing out the drinks, bringing out the food and even bringing the bill yet that older lady couldn't even just come back to check up on us if that was her only role.. it wasn't busy when we came in also so i didn't see why she was having trouble.. my chicken chimichanga, rice and beans lacked flavor as well as my husband's fajitas.. the salsa didn't look appetizing.. they looked like they were a few days old.. it had no taste to it.. i could've made it better at home.. i wanted to try a margarita but because of the poor service, i didn't want to have to wait forever for it.. as always, i'd rather make the drive to go elsewhere.. it really is too bad..
(2)Paul J.
A friend of mine told me about this place and had nothing but good things to say. I tried it tonight and I gotta say, I'm bummed. I ordered a burrito, raw onion and peppers must be what makes it unique. Wouldn't mind some flavor other than the hot sauce I asked for.
(2)Matt G.
The restaurant is dirty and in need of repair in numerous places. The food is subpar. Yes the portions are large, however the flavor, quality and authenticity are below average.
(2)Yohann T.
The gentleman who greeted us was very nice. He seated us right away and even asked if we wanted a booth. Fantastic. Another gentleman brought us chips and dip within 30 seconds or less. Awesome. The reason why I am giving only 3 stars is because our waitress didn't seem to know what she was doing. She was an older lady. She first asked for our orders. After we were done ordering, she started to jot them down on a piece of paper but then asked us what we wanted again. The male servers brought our food to us. He was very nice. The food we got was good but lacked a little flavor and salt. While our waitress was helping the table behind us, we could hear their frustration. The waitress couldn't get their order right. All the while, I was waiting for a refill but our waitress never stopped by. She passed by our table 15 times and glanced over a few times but never stopped by to see if we needed anything else. We tried waving our arms and still nothing. Even when we were done, we waited a good 10 min before we finally got her attention. We were fairly annoyed by that time. We had asked for a box but instead of her bringing it out, another male waiter brought it out. He even brought us our bill. He was really nice also. We paid and left. All the male host and waiters knew what they were doing except for that lady. She seemed to be the only one on the floor that night.

on the recommendation of a friend, i decided to try Rey Azteca for lunch today. I left quite disappointed. Right off the bat, this place is under construction. it appears with the sole purpose of cramming more booths in. I was in one of the new booths, and i had a very un-plesant lunch with my friends Plywood, and Mr. 2x4. These new booths form a very claustrophobic hallway immediately off the entrance. upon walking in the door.. there is a small room, also made of plywood. No one is there to greet you in this.. they apparently expect you to make the walk of shame past groups of seated diners, or seat yourself.. neither was well indicated. After being deposited at my terri-booth and and given my ration of chips and salsas.. i was left to my own devices for a rather long period of time. it took about 10 minutes before the waitress returned to take an order. Another 20 min after i had ordered, the food arrived, and was quite dissappointing. I ordered the Burritos Mexicanos. Usually when i order a burrito at a Mexican joint, they come assembled. i got two tubes of basically meat and peppers covered with "nacho sauce". and sides of lettuce, guack, sour cream, etc.. So.. Burritos, Fajita style. Then i noticed they were drippy. the tortillas were very soggy and the plate was now pooling with a liquid that was very greasy. Definitely not the "nacho sauce" which was distinctly white. I finished it, but it was not the most pleasant experience. after i had completed eating, it took an additional 15 min to get a check. after 5 i began to watch the bartender and waitress just having a nice conversation for the next 10. I thin the only thing that brought the waitress over was my somewhat annoyed glare when she actually decided to look over. It took over 50 minutes from seating to leaving for lunch. if you're busy, i can understand that, but when i'm surrounded by empty tables, there should be no excuses.
(1)Nathan D.
Great experience. Tacos and fagitas were excellent. Great service. Can't beat the chips and dip.
(4)Mike H.
Located in the Market Square Shopping Center in downtown Chanhassen, Rey Azteca has been a staple of local mexican dining since it opened. The food is fresh, tasty, and a good value. While some of the dishes are a bit Americanized, they are good. The wait staff is always attentive, even on busy lunch hours, and makes an effort to keep the cups filled while you're muching on chips and salsa while waiting for your meal. Once your delicious order arrives, you're instantly immersed in some deliciously crafted food -- ranging from fajitas and enchiladas to chile rellenos and camarones. If you'[re looking for super-spicy, its not here. Authentic? You'll find much better in SoCal, Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico. But if for midwestern tastes, its good eats.

This reminds me of the food my Nana never made. I don't have a Nana. But my hubby had a Nana and he approves this message and the food. Low key, authentic joint that is mas mama y padre than chain. All rightie, I am now a Nana so I have a lot to live up to. Cooking Mexican is not easy so my compliments to anyone who can do it. Guess I'll have to add a can of green chiles to that tator tot dish. Hope this quarter Hispanic baby got the spicy taste buds from his Mommy's padres's side of the family.

I have been going here with my family for YEARS. The service is good, the food comes fast, and the food is delicious. I crave the chicken enchiladas and the chips and salsa. It is a small "hole in the wall" but I wouldn't have it any other way. The only downside is that in the wintertime it gets chilly if you sit at a table by the door. Usually we just wait for a table further inside the restaurant to open up. Out of all the years I have been coming here maybe twice it took longer than 15 mins to get our food.

Much better than a Chevy's or Don Pablos. I recommend the enchiladas and chalupas. Add a dash of the habanero sauces on the table for extra flavor.

My husband and I just went here the first week of August with friends from out of state as they know authentic Mexican food. The test was to see if I would like it since I am a finicky eater. All 4 of us thought it was really good. The only draw back was it is cramped. We were seated at a table for 4 but we had no room so we requested they put two tables together. They were really nice about us doing that even though they were quite busy. They even did it for us. Also, our friends said it was authentic Mexican food. I am actually looking forward to eating here again. I give it four stars instead of 5 only because there is no elbow room.

My favorite mexican restaurant north of the Minnesota River. I love the marinade and juicy quality of the steak.

I had really been looking forward to checking this place out, since I've heard such good things since moving to the area. What a huge disappointment. The waitstaff was rude and really inattentive. The food was totally bland. The only difference between a burrito and an enchilada was that one was corn tortilla and the other was a flour one. The chips were old. There were dead flies on the windowsill. My friend got her water in a dirty glass that was obviously used and not washed. When we went to pay, the cashier was downright rude. Save your time and money. This was far from gastric bliss.

I usually love family-run Mexican restaurants, but I just don't love Rey Azteca. The food is okay and a bit on the greasy side. Also I could live without the salsa. I used to live in Southern California and I really miss the Mexican food down there. I was excited to try Rey Azteca but was disappointed.
