Went on Tuesday for the Sushi Night special. I can say that there was nothing special about it. The special comes with 7 different varieties of items. Of the 7 only 1 had fresh cut fish the other 3 were deep fried (not even in tempura) or the other 3 had no fish in them what so ever. So if you are thinking about sushi here, I would think again.

So I've been to this place once before because of the fact they have the local Jack Pine Brewery on tap. It was past lunch rush and I was expecting that level of service that you usually get but nope. Rachel took care of me no problem. I went with her recommended lunch special of a smoked turkey sandwich with mixed greens, provolone cheese, some thousand island dressing on 9 grain. That light smoke with the greens and cheese was awesome. It also came with a red pepper purée soup and a mixed green salad. Awesome. I literally drank the last of my cup cause the spoon wasn't working for me. F'n spoon. Your dead to me. Happy hour (4-6 everyday, closed Sunday's) gets you their 2-1 pizza deal and the selection of what they offer looks great. Definitely will be back.

My husband and I ate here for lunch and really enjoyed it! I ordered the pear and blue cheese wedge salad, which turned out to be one of the BEST salads I have had in a long time! I also ordered the chicken fajita soup, which was good, but the lobster bisque that my husband ordered was AMAZING! So glad we stopped here during our stay in Brainerd :)

Salmen is always great here, portion size is nice for those of us counting calories. Prices are not bad, though the beer and whine are a little expensive. It was a fun place to go, appetizers were great, would recommend it to anyone.

For a hidden, local catering spot, it was worth stumbling upon. Staff was friendly and talkative. Food was delicious. Drinks were cheap! I mean I got 2 Jameson's, for basically $11. Most places I travel to charge just that one for a real skinny neat. I have posted a pic of my app. Had a burger for my meal and even the salad was great down to the last bite.

I wasn't a big fan. The pasta I had was just ok. I didn't think it was worth the price.

Easily my favorite place for food in Baxter. Here's a chef that actually writes his own menus based on ingredient availability and freshness. And they cook it. I doubt there's even a microwave the building. One of the cooks went on a truffle oil kick for a couple months, but I think that's passed. Professionally dressed waitstaff, clean establishment, prompt seating. I love the butternut squash bisque in the fall, the sashimi and tempura on Tuesdays. Sometimes the chef will feel like practicing up dessert making skills, and he'll have a complimentary chocolate torte or a custard for the waitress to hand out. It seems like any kind of taco on the menu is a home run, you can't go wrong there. There are some heavier things on the menu like the Pad Thai, or the hazelnut encrusted walleye --not bad food at all, just heavy with oils. I like the lighter dishes in the summer, beet salads, any salads. It's just nice to have a local place that's creative and takes their food experience seriously.

I have been coming to the Baxter/ Brainerd area on regular basis since I was very young. I have eaten at almost every restaurant in the area and I have to say that I loved this place. The menu is the most creative I have seen and the food was excellent. This is not your typical meat and potato place. I ordered the pork tenderloin with beer cheese risotto and my husband ordered the brisket with yams. Both came with brussels sprouts as well. Both meals were delicious! The brussels sprouts were cooked slightly more than I like but they were still very good. We also ordered the dessert sampler. I was expecting a few bites of each dessert but it was basically a full portion of five of their desserts. All of them amazing. We had to take a few home. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service was quick, helpful and friendly. I love that this restaurant chooses to source food locally and to make things from scratch. I'm excited to come back in the summer since they have their own gardens on site. They also have a full gluten free menu including gf pastas. Overall a great dining experience. We will be returning often!

Wonderful fast service in a relaxed up north classy setting. If only the food lived up to this. I ordered the French toast turkey sandwich with a dipping sauce. Half of my sandwich was soggy but the berry sauce was good. Both my husband and I thought the fries were not done well enough. They were steak fries... extremely doughy. I didn't know whether to mash them up with sour cream and bacon bits or to dip them in ketchup.

Prarie Bay is a great place. I love the environment and service. I would love to give it a 5 star but my burger just didn't have that much taste to it. But I'll go back for sure.

One of my favorite places. Only complaint is that the steak is over cooked every time. I usually order steak medium rare, but it came out more medium-medium/well the first couple times. Yesterday I ordered it rare and it still came out medium. It's tough to correct a steak once it's over cooked. Otherwise, everything else on their menu I've tried is top notch. I gave the steak 3 chances, won't bother ordering steak again unless they start offering a fattier cut like ribeye.

Prairie Bay catered my outdoor wedding in Nisswa this past summer. They did an amazing job, and I am so happy we went with them. Not only was the food delicious, bu t the presentation was beautiful as well. Multiple people said it was the best wedding food they ever had. I would highly recommend the bruschetta bar for a fun appetizer during cocktail hour, and also recommend the vegetarian lasagna and the slow braised short ribs for entrees. It was all amazing, and I would definitely recommend them for any event you need catering for.

The three dollar signs are misleading, the prices could not be more reasonable, especially for the quality of the food we received. My boyfriend and I decided to order a salad and sandwich to split, which was the perfect amount of food. We ordered the wedge salad and the Cuban pulled pork sandwich. Both were excellent! The salad's bleu cheese dressing was delicious, and the bacon added a subtle but wonderful smokiness. The pulled pork was exactly what it should be, juicy and full of flavor. The juice was literally dripping from our hands as we ate it! The French fries were the chunky baked/wedge potato-y kind, which we like. This place is great, the atmosphere is really clean and relaxing, and the service is top-notch. The menu is very colorful, which was refreshing since we usually stop in at Buffalo Wild Wings (whose service sucks btw). All-in-all we would definitely stop in again, just to try some of the other interesting menu items- they have tons of flatbread pizzas to chose from. The only reason they didn't get the fifth star, is because I think they may be experiencing a slight identity crisis. The decor is "nice" but bordering on random, and you're left a little confused as to whether this place is "fancy" or just pretending to be. They don't put ketchup bottles on the table which is super frustrating for ketchup-lovers like myself... Grrr. Can't complain about anything else though!

Good food, and as far as I know, one of the better places to eat in the area. Decent beer and wine selections, good variety of appetizers and main dishes. We've had the Ahi Tuna salad a couple times, the wood-fired pizzas, various pasta dishes. Decor isn't my thing, but it's at least interesting and (I think) would appeal more to women. My only complaint is slow service. It was a Friday night and not terribly busy, but they really seemed overwhelmed. Maybe short staffed that night? Took a while to get our order taken and a much longer time to get our appetizer and then dinner.

Waited about three minutes to be seated even though the dining room was only about 1/3 full. Hostess seemed confused, and had to walk the whole floor before deciding on a table that would be ok for one. Once seated, the service was good - timely, not pushy, and never had to wait for a drink refill. Which brings me to the food. Started with soup, which other Yelpers had pretty uniformly suggested was a highlight. It actually was a highlight, but really only in comparison to the rest. Chicken and wild rice soup had good amounts of the featured ingredients, but the broth included what seemed to be rosemary in a pretty overpowering amount. It was also salty. For the entree, I had the short ribs. Filling salt shakers must be the easiest job in this establishment, because while fork tender, this was even saltier, as were the scalloped potatoes that came with. The only element on the plate which provided some respite from the salt assault (see what I did there? :-)) was the fall squash side, which was well cooked, tender but not mushy. Other than the salt level, the potatoes also were properly done. As I said, the beef was wonderfully tender, but it was also somewhat dry and with the salt level, well, you get where I am going here. Definitely needed some more sauce. Dining alone, I didn't get to try any other dishes. Maybe what I ordered was just an off night, but I won't be in a hurry to return next time I visit Baxter / Brainerd.

I'm pleased to see the "locavore" concept expanding from high end white tablecloth restaurants to more moderately priced, neighborhood establishments. I am even more pleased to find a place serving locally sourced, fresh, quality food in the chain restaurant hell of the Brainerd lakes area. Prairie Bay's menu covers a fair amount of ground. Small plates range from calamari to sushi. Entrees include walleye (of course), steaks, and pasta. The selection of sandwiches includes a burger made with locally sourced grass fed beef. I chose to focus on the wood fired pizza. As a solo diner eating in the bar, I was able to take advantage of the two-for-one happy hour pizza deal. My "margarita" pizza featured copious quantities of basil, tomato and mozzarella cheese, all crowned by a whole head of roasted garlic sitting in the middle of the pie. My "seasonal forest mushroom and cheve" pizza came with quantities of flavorful mushrooms and just the right amount of goat cheese sprinkled over all. The bartender was very friendly and more than happy to provide me with a box to tote my leftovers back to the hotel room. Also offered are a solid selection of wines and beers, the latter including various craft brews on a rotating basis. I liked the fact that the locals seem to support this place. Nearly everyone in the room except me was from the area. That said, the staff was very welcoming to this refugee from "the Cities." The chef/owner was a presence in the restaurant, and stopped by to visit with customers. I'd come back here in a heartbeat. If you are in the area, pay a visit.

We went to Prairie Bay for dinner while in Northern Minnesota with my wife's family. We had a group of 17 including kids. The menu was varied enough so everyone had hard time choosing. The kids menu was great and came with a side of fruit. The service and staff were excellent and the food lived up to descriptions. The pizzas were awesome and had creative toppings. I had the duck and risotto, it was exceptional. There was a minor issue with one entrée and the management took care of it right away and exceed my expectations. The Prairie Bay definitely lived up to its Number #1 ranking in the Baxter\ Brainerd area

By far the best food choice in the area. Interesting menu, good chefs. Lunch a great value. Their creative pizzas wonderful.

This place is about as fancy schmancy as you're going to get within Brainerd/Baxter proper. I would say for Brainerd, this is a really solid restaurant. The food isn't exactly healthy but it is very tasty. They have a little bit of everything with big portions of whatever you order. I'm especially a fan of the Joe Plut Reading Room named after one of the greatest teachers I ever had.

Stopped in for lunch on Monday. My son and I tried the tuna crisp appetizer and it was WONDERFUL...then we tried two different pizzas, they were also very good. I was impressed with the food and atmosphere. The servers were very friendly and the service was quick. Can't wait to go back with the whole family.

Awful, avoid at all cost. Typical Midwest has NO idea what they are doing with flavors. Everyones dish has the same sickeningly sweet undertone--in sausage penne? Really? The only reason they receive one star, is lovely staff and clean restrooms. Oh, and our cocktails were fine.

Really good unique food. Best restaurant we have been to in Northern Minnesota for a long time.

Fantastic, made from scratch, food made with locally grown foods. It's incredible and the plating looks gorgeous, too!

Fantastic food. They aren't priced like a diner or a perkins, but you *do* get what you pay for. It's an odd blend of very upscale dining, especially for the area, and casual atmosphere. The place is quite nice, but don't expect black ties and a posh crowd, there are often families eating there and there is no dress code. I'd personally recommend going later in the evening if you are doing a special occasion. While the prices are comparatively high for the area, they are still very reasonable for the cuisine, approx 100$ for signature type dinners for two with escargot appetizers, a bottle of wine, desert, and tip. And they do of course have more standard fare which is quite reasonably priced, hence the proclivity of families coming in with rugrats and all (or perhaps yammering children is a rare occasion and I'm just unlucky the few times I've been down). The small bar is actually a gem too, very respectable selection of single malts and some good beers on tap. It's separated from the dining area as well and still has some small tables which makes it a good choice for seating if the main area is a bit too boisterous for your tastes at the moment.

My first time at this resturant. Prices werent too bad and the food looked good. After taking my first bite I grabbed for my napkin and a dead beatle fell out. Yuk!!!!!! I had to get up and locate my waitress who quickly grabbed the bug and wiped the table off. No new silverware offered and then began telling me how bugs are everywhere right now. She even has them in her house and that this bug could have come in on me,WHAT???????? I carried a dead bug on me in to the resturant and it fell of me and rolled in to the napkin really?????? No comp offered at all and the manager was too busy to be bothered. Bugs in the napkins, where else are the bugs? I would have been better off at mcdonalds.

This is the best food in Brainerd. They can be a little pricey, but it's always worth it. They also try to buy locally, as much as possible.
(4)Christy K.
I ate here with my coworkers. Service was slow. The food was ok. Nothing special. The ambience reminded me of a Perkins with oldies music loudly playing in the background.
(3)Mary K.
Really poor service....we waiting forever for a table (only two tables were occupied), to get our beverage order, no refills, rude waitress...it was an unpleasant experience. The food is also over priced. They charge a $2 fee to share an appetizer - I've actually never heard of that before. Then my friend's two children also paid a $2 fee to share a kids meal - what? It seems they are trying to nickle & dime whenever they can. I won't go back!!!!
