Best roast beef sandwiches. Period. Cheap and delicious. I only wish they were open longer.

This is about as classic Minnesotan as it gets. The only reason that it isn't as well known as Mickeys is that Bloomington keeps it like a secret.

I have been going to Wally's for years and years and I have always been happy with my meal and service. Lately I have come in to the restaurant and every time I order a Roast Beef sand-which the meat has been so rare and they barely add any meat to the bun anymore. I get like two slices of really rare, cold beef and it just isn't appetizing. Several people that I know that go there have also noticed the lack of Beef on the sand-which and that it is extremely rare roast beef, and the hot sandwiches are never served hot. Maybe they will realize when some customer gets food poisoning from there rare sandwich that it just isn't appetizing anymore.

I first discovered Wally's Roast Beef in high school when one of my friends claimed it was the best roast beef sandwich he'd ever eaten. When we're talking roast beef sandwiches I'm not talking fancy, fussy, gourmet. I'm talking old school american roast beef. Think a scratch made version of Arby's. Super soft white bun, a mountain of tender roast beef, swiss, a cup of hot jus and horseradish. When I used to go here it was in a different location in a strip mall in Bloomington. Now it is in an office building. If you are ever craving old school roast beef sandwich this place really does hit the spot. 612food.com

This is the place for hot roast beef and turkey sandwiches. There plain roast beef sandwiches are very tasty too, but lot's of places do that. Get the blue plate special, you will not be disappointed. They have shakes, fries etc and a good selection of bottled and canned soda.Super Friendly staff and the owner is always working. If you have never been here, the location is a little odd. It is in that big office building, park on either side of the building.

Massive disappointment. Soggy sesame seed bun, awfully-rare-for-this-kind-of-place roast beef, couldn't be bothered to melt the cheese. Fries were decent, and it was nice to have a cream soda, hadn't had one for quite some time. A friend had the blue plate, another the roast beef and a side of the weakest looking chicken wild rice soup I've ever seen. His vigor with the pepper shaker told me all I needed to know. Not again, not even on a dare.

Though it was my first check-in, I had their French Dip Sandwich a month ago before I went on vacation for like 3 weeks. It was brought in to work and my coworker told me it was really good. I ate it and was craving it while I was away on the beach and all. Now that I'm back, I had to make it a point to go back and have some more of those yummy roast beefs. I'm a sucker for roast beef sandwiches anyway. I even liked the old Hardee's roast beef as well as Arby's. Last time I went to Arby's, I had a fat binge session between the sandwich and curly fries, and it sent me to the hospital for gallbladder attack. But, hey.. i'd still go for roast beef. However, now that I found Wally's.... It was a little hard to find and the location and the theme were a little not synchronized for me. It's an office building! I didn't expect a roast beef diner inside. The line was out the door at lunch, so if you want something in and out, this is not the place. Though, the line moved pretty fast. It was hard to find silverwares and extra napkins too. You have to ask the counter people but they're busy moving that line. This time around I tried their roast beef sandwich with au jus with french fries. Yummm. I just can't wait to come back. The malt shakes also look awesome! I didn't try though as I wanted to limit my caloric intake. Blue plate special would have been my choice but I had to go back to work and didn't want to nap there. Looking at it, I imagined I would feel so happy and full and curl up and sleep. Maybe I'll try it on weekend. Bottom line, great food, cheap, sliced to order roast beef that's to die for! I like it!!!

Real Food. Like 1950s Diner. Kind of a weird location - the 1st floor of an office building - but who cares - the food is great. Wally's was packed and the line was out the door at weekday lunch - its easy to see why. Tasty piles of medium rare, juicy, roast beef. Served at room temperature as to keep the pink juicy goodness perfect without over cooking it by keeping it hot. The buns are grilled and steaming bowls of Au Jus for dipping warm up every bite. So good. Thick, sturdy, crunchy, fries. How do they do that? Every table had baskets of huge onion rings for sharing. I got the Blue Plate dinner with real mashed potatoes, layers of roast beef between 2 slices of white bread all smothered in brown gravy. Crisp corn on the side. Heaven! All the sodas are canned and there is some nice seating on the patio weather permitting. Order when you walk in at the counter and they bring the food to your table. If you are going to the Mall of America - eat here first. Just blocks away from the Mall of America. There seems to be a little bit of a competition in the Twin Cities for best Roast Beef sandwich between Mayslacks in NE, Maverick's in Roseville, and Wally's in Bloomington. Each is worth a trip but Wally's is the best. Mayslacks has a full bar so that is nice for the weekends and evenings.

With all of the raving reviews, I was expecting something more wow. I had thought the roast beef was going to be served warm, but as another poster mentioned, it was room temperature beef. Unfortunately, this made me question the meats safety somewhat, as I asked how it would be prepared. it was supposedly held "warm" and then sliced for service. I wished I had just brought it home so I could have microwaved it before I ate it. The roast beef itself was very good. The bun, swiss cheese, horseradish, and bbq sauce complemented it well. The fries were solid. Unfortunately, nothing is worse than a warm sandwich served cold.

To fully enjoy the experience that is Wally's, I made sure to order more than one kind. I chose a regular roast beef sandwich along with the same with a slice of Swiss cheese and followed it all up with fries and a vanilla malt. Talk about some good roast beef! It was tender, had an interesting seasoning and the horseradish and BBQ sauces really hit the spot. Now, I know what you're thinking, if they are so great then why the 4 stars? While the sandwich was absolutely divine, it still left a little something to be desired. It was served a little warmer than room temperature and I guess I was expecting something hot. The same can be said about the fries. However, the amazing taste of the roast beef and the delicious malt more than made up for its shortcomings. TLDR: Get a sandwich and a malt. Don't worry about the sides.

Great spot for cheap (like really cheap) man food, but truly not for me. I came here for lunch with a group of coworkers and sadly didn't want anything on the menu. All the options were standard meat and potatoes: BBQ Beef, Roast Beef, Meat Loaf, Philly Beef Steak, Prime Dip and Cheeseburgers. Honestly the menu was really boring and I was so surprised there weren't any other options. Who wants chicken anyway? I ended up getting the BBQ beef sandwich because it was the cheapest and had a salad on the side. You can tell salads are pretty foreign to them because they fill a plate with lettuce and throw sliced onions and tomatoes on top that were clearly intended to go on a burger. It tasted fine, it's all just presentation. My BBQ Sandwich was good, but definitely the kind of good you could make at home. For $2.99 though I can't complain about it not being gourmet, it was a good value. The guys I went to lunch with loved it though. Most of them got the Blue Plate special that included a hot beef sandwich smothered in gravy, some mashed potatoes and corn. I guess it's just a guy thing.

Although everything was very reasonably priced, it was overall a disappointment to go here for lunch. Especially after so many good reviews. The roast beef was the only thing that was worth while in this experience but the bun tasted like it was bought in the cheap section of the supermarket as well as the salad was literally just condiments put in a Togo box (iceberg lettuce, tomato, white onion, and a little bit of green bell peppers). I won't be coming back here again.
(2)
Rhonda G.
It has a captive audience, beats most cafeterias. I got a RB sand, that tasted great and was stuffed. It was pre done so I was in and out. I liked the bun, more of an egg type.It was so packed that I didn't bother with condiments. It could be a destination place, but not at lunch hour. I'll come back to sample more.

Wally's is what Wally's is. It is not fine dining, never has been. It is not diet food - anyone that thinks it is needs to get a clue. What is Wally's? It is classic, affordable, stick to your ribs kind of food. On the run and need a quick bite? Grab a roast beef sandwich for $3.49 (plus tax). Bigger appetite? Grab one of the plate specials with meat, bread, potatoes, gravy and veggie - you can call whether you need a full or half order. Sandwiches are served on a toasted bun - condiments, pickles and onions are to the right, by the water fountain. Please use the tongs provided to grab your toppings as I don't want your fingers anywhere near food that someone else might eat. There is also barbeque and horseradish sauce. The horseradish is a creamy type, but any resemblance to Arby's horsey sauce ends there - this stuff has a real kick. FYI - I didn't see any mustard in the area, which would be good on a roast beef with swiss. The coleslaw is lacking. I would never order it again as it was just a 2 ounce cup of nothingness. The roast beef could have stood to be seasoned a bit more, but I guess they keep it bland for the senior citizen crowd. For a quick, affordable spot to grab lunch in the area Wally's fits the bill.

Sold comfort food. Wish the gravy was a little better. They use a jarred or canned gravy that has a very malty taste. Otherwise fantastic. Homemade potatoes, nice roast beef, some fixin's and BBQ sauce. Nice little place.

Classic roast beef sandwiches in a classic 50 ' s atmosphere. The service is very good for a diner style place. Have eaten here many times and will do so going forward. Suggestions are the roast beef sandwich with cheese sauce or au jus. Or any of the plate specials.

Man, it is such a struggle when i go there to eat. Do i get a roast beef or meatloaf sandwich? I usually suck it up and buy one of each to avoid any buyers remorse. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Anyway, you can not go wrong with pretty much anything on the menu.

I just ate there on 9/6/14, and wanted to try the roast beef because of the reviews and I had high expectations. I got the 2/$5.99 daily special for that day. It was not as good as I was thinking....the sandwiches were already wrapped and sitting under heat, plus the beef and au jus was not very flavorful compared to another roast beef eating establishment I have frequented. It was still so-so for a smaller sandwich though, and I heated the other one up when I got home and it was much better hot, than lukewarm. My customer service experience was lacking during this visit .Maybe I will try it again in the future, but I won't go out of my way to do it.

Roast beef yummmm. Wow, inexpensive and very tasty. I tried the Cheese Soup as well. Awesome. Definitely add some horsey sauce to your RB sandwich... makes it just right. Drive around the building, you'll find it. No prob...

I mean, I'd suggest this place to people who are in Bloomington and looking for something quick that isn't fast food. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but have enjoyed every meal I have ever had from here. Obviously, try the roast beef (Blue Plate) but other then that, you're pretty much out of options. If someone asked me what I thought of this place (as Yelp has so kindly done), I'd say, "ehh, it's not bad." So take that for what it's worth.

Now moved to a new location in Southtown. If you are approaching from American Blvd it's on your right after the Chrysler Dealership. It's in the nondescript looking office block on the first floor facing 82nd St. The good news is that the food is as good as ever and the parking is much easier. The French dip is still my favorite way to enjoy a Wallys.

Heck yeah!! Wally's is the bomb!! It's a pretty basic roast beef sammich place, not too flashy, moderate sized dining area. They have super limited hours, so no dinner at Wallys, 'but I think you'd want to go here for lunch, moreso, anyway. I had the blue plate special for $6 with an IBC rootbeer and a chocolate malt. The blue plate special is roastbeef, served on thick-cut white bread with a large helping of mashed potatoes and all of it smothered in brown gravy. You also get a little side dish of corn, which I immediately dumped out onto the mashed potatoes :) All of it tasted great and filled me up in a warm way that only my mother's cooking can.

So I stopped here for lunch one day, it was a little after the main run but still busy. I ordered the blue plate special, the meat in my sandwich was cold, the potatoes were chilly, Lumpy and had skins in them, the only decent thing was the corn which probably came from a can. The prices weren't bad (portions were very large) and if the food had been hot, it might have been good. I don't think I'll give it another chance though.

If you don't get two roast beefs with au jus, cheesy fries and top it off with the special 'Wally's sauce' and horseradish you're doing it all wrong and you haven't actually been to Wally's. A classic establishment that is affordable, melt in your mouth good and fun to be at. I wouldn't mess around with the plate specials - not because they are garbage or awful tasting, but because you are missing out on the roast beef deliciousness! Great ownership and friendly staff.

I really wanted to like this place, small menu, busy and friendly staff. Everyone raves about the RB, but I've definitely had better. The atmosphere is cool and side items are pretty good. But the sandwiches are just not that special.

Walk into Wally's and you'll be transported back to the 60's and 70's. Part of an office building, Wally's is a little bit hard to see from the main street. Once you're there, you'll find a classic dinette decor with green and white colors. Staff is friendly and helpful, in a neighborly kind of way. Everyone comes here for the roast beef sandwiches, so that's what I got. Also decided to add some Swiss cheese and au jus. Got cheesy fries and an IBC root beer to go along with the lunch. While my order was almost instantaneous, it took just slightly longer for my friends' orders to come out. I'm assuming this is because my sandwich was already made, and someone before me decided to not want it anymore? Anyway, the sandwich itself was lukewarm-ish, and the cheese had signs that it had sat on the kitchen counter for a bit longer than "just ready". In any case, it tasted just fine, and paired up with the au jus, it was an old-school sandwich experience. The au jus was just salty enough but a bit lacking on depth of flavor. The fries were quite excellent. Overall, Wally's is a place where you go maybe once in a while to get that old-school beef sandwich kick. It may not be the best sandwich you'll ever have, but it'll satisfy that craving for the time being.

Should've read the reviews. I was confused by all these exit only doors! Soon enough I figured out you had to walk into the building to get into the entrance. Duh! I got there a bit after lunch rush but there were still a few tables and a couple singles sitting around enjoying their meals. The jukebox was playing nostalgic music, my favorite of the day, Crazy by Patsy Cline, kept me company while I waited for my order. It took about 5-10 mins to get my to go order of a French Dip and cheesy fries. I think what really got me though was the price for the quality. For that price the meal really is insanely tasty. I couldn't finish it, it was a lot of food but it was well worth the $7 I spent on it. The roast beef had a slightly sour taste to it which intrigued me, but the meat was tender like nobody's business. The bread was soft yet chewy, buttered and toasted, AMAZING. The au jus was good albeit a bit messy, the way it was intended. The cheesy fries were well worth the less than $2 price tag. They were fried to a crisp, you could tell they were made from real potatoes. The cheese though is a better quality nacho cheese, so don't be expecting cheddar fries now! All in all would definitely come back especially to try the color plate specials, think there's a blue, a green, and... An orange? Anyway I will be back!

Great food, selection, and value! They have several other options available if you don't want roast beef. The lines are long around lunch time, so get there early! The roast beef sandwiches are the real deal! Great tasting food for a fair price! I will be back again and again! Try this place if you're looking for a quality lunch meal!

Took the toddler peoples here today. We got a BBQ beef special for 2.99, a regular roast beef, 3.49, a grilled cheese, 1.99 and cheese fries 1.89. The BBQ beef was overflowing. It was good with slices of roast beef, and pulled bits on a white sesame seed bun. BBQ flavor wasn't substantial, just roast beef in what seemed to be a commercial sauce. Good for the value. Not Wowzers. The regular beef was nice. Med rare, in nice slices and the horseradish sauce they offer at their condiment stand added a nice kick. Nicely seasoned. I should have got the au jus. (extra charge of 49 cents). Cheese fries were hand cut with a generous portion of liquid cheese. Great value, but he fries were lightly seasoned and the cheese sauce lacked flavor. Grilled cheese. This is the downfall. Mel oil to toast overwhelmed the taste of the toasted sandwich. It stuck with me for an hour after. Butter is much better. Staff were great. Lots of smiles and very attentive. The owner was wiping down tables as they were close to closing but assured us we were able to stay as long as we desired. Very clean, polished. It has a diner feel within a business building just south of 494. A bit hard to find, but plenty of parking and a really nice vibe to the place. All in all, I was impressed for a little place.

So, Wally's moves to a new location and we follow thinking everything is still the same....not. The line was out the door at lunchtime, but after this experience...I'll most likely be taking my $9 elsewhere. The line was long, so it gave me a little time to soak in the atmosphere. Nestled in an office complex (good business move, really), it still had some of the appeal of the old location (jukebox included). Every seat was filled, and I was amused at the mass chaos happening at the front counter. I was hoping it would sort itself out by the time I was able to order. It didn't. The manager greeted me very gruffly, with a really quick "next", and I could tell I was in trouble by the amount of receipts on the counter with first names on them waiting for orders to come up. I ordered up my favorite: the blue plate special, with a can of coke...there are no fountain drinks here for some reason, then attempted to find an open seat. I found the only open table along the side, and sat down. No more than two minutes later my blue plate special was ready. I'm not sure if they had blue plate specials ready behind the counter...but I think I was given an old one. My entire plate was lukewarm. The corn was dry, and the roast beef I remember being so tender and juicy at the old location had been replaced with fatty, tough, dry beef that was placed upon soggy bread and garnished with mashed potatoes that were bland and dry as well. I guess things can't always stay the same...and I am sure most of the people in that office complex are oblivious to the fact that Wally's used to be a great place...but now they are just your average, ordinary restaurant stuck in an office building providing crappy service, and serving up average food to the office drones. What a disappointment.

I have been going to Wally's for over 20 years. New owner, new kids that they call cooks, micro amount of cold meat in sandwich, moved into office building and raised prices! Do the right thing and try PennLake Roast Beef just up the road at 90th & Penn, The former cook of 20+ years opened. Wish they would have stayed at prior location and kept the cook. I guess that's OK, now I have PL Roast Beef to go to.

Wally's is such awesome comfort food. I love the roast beef and the soft, chewy rolls the sandwiches come on. The cheese fries are awesome - nothing is too greasy, and you only wait a couple minutes for fresh hot food. I know they also do some daily specials that don't always include Roast Beef Sandwiches, but for me it's always a Roast Beef with Cheese and Fries. Did I mention it's super economical?!
(4)
Jeremy D.
GREAT roast beef sandwiches and great au jus. The fries I got sucked... but that isn't what I was there for and I probably wouldn't ever order them again... stick with chips. You have seriously got to stop by here though... the roast beef is that good, thin and tender, spiced correctly on the edges. The au jus is cery flavorful and complex in taste, not too salty and well balanced. The only tip I have is get those fries under control. A good roast beef sandwich like that deserves fresh cut fries - it would save you money AND be a better product than the frozen ones you serve now.

Ok, I'm gonna premise this review with a little disclaimer. Thin sliced room temp rare as a motherF*cker roast beef is a big thing in Boston (and around new england in general, I think). Now, I'm not gonna swing this to say that NE is better than the Midwest cause we all have our preferences for what we grew up with. The trend may have its roots elsewhere, so I don't wanna be called out as a wench (even though I am) for this little ditty. Anyway. Wally's is pretty good for what they deliver. I haven't eaten at an Arby's and I never intend to do so, cause it looks hella lame and nasty. However, I will say that I've eaten my weight in crazy amounts of thinly sliced room temp roast beef at various locations back east. The roast beef at this establishment was pretty much what I was looking for, but I was underwhelmed with the amount that I received. I personally think that if you're going to run a restaurant with the title to include "roast beef" that you should sell the living F out of your product. What I received was kind of snack size. While I may be 5'10" and 170, it still probably wouldn't fill my pint sized friends either. So, Wally's gets a solid 4-stars from big old unimportant me..and I'd probably go back in the future....but it is highly likely that I'll need 3 sandwiches in order to feel like I've eaten an actual meal. The fries left a little to be desired, but I think that is a personal preference for crispy rather than noodly pieces of potato. Try the place, you might like it....I just am not sure I wanna drive all the way from St Paul....although my only alternative is Revere Mass, so I might be back in short time. Also, the almighty wikipedia states that chicago may be the origin of this sandwich. I would research further, but I just ate a black sheep pizza on the solo...so I lack energy for further review. That is all.

Yum! Hearty portions and delicious beef / au jus. Highly recommend! Busy during weekday lunch hour...go early!
Damn this place is hard to find!! It's tucked away in an office building and kinda had a cafeteria feel to it. So everyone on Yelp said to try the Roast Beef sandwich, so I did.Its the namesake for crying out lout. SO, the best way I can describe it was like an Arby's sandwich but with real meat! The BBQ sauce and creamy horseradish condiments was eerily similar to Arby Sauce coincidence?!? You decide? I also ordered the daily special which was the pulled pork sandwich. This was a homerun!. Too bad they only have it on Tuesday. I don't even know how to describe the nom nomness of this but it was outstanding!! Overall the sandwiches were good quality and a great value. It's a good place to get an almost fast food lunch near the airport.

So now I'm 0 for 2 with Yelpers in the Twin Cities. What a disappointment, really. There was a line out the door, so I was quite hopeful that the fare was going to be good. So after waiting about 10 minutes to order, I got the Blue Plate with the beef barley soup. Ordered, sat down and was served pretty quickly. Looked at the soup.... looked like a carrot and celery soup more than beef and barley. Spoon plunges in, large chunk of beef. Horribly dry and tough. Enough of that. Waste of $2.70 on that one. Open face sandwich is next. Lots of gravy and potatoes. Gravy was non-exciting, potatoes just OK. Beef was also dry and flavorless here too. I'd had enough. Left with most of the food still on the plates. Darned it.

Three words my friends. Blue Plate Special. This place is a diamond in the rough. Tucked inside a busy office building I would never have imagined this simple cafe was a delicious gem. I will premise my review with saying I have only ordered the Blue Plate Special, because it is THAT good. The options are great and the prices are fitting. They do roast beef well, but they have a number of other options available making this cafe appeasing to many palates. Remember they do breakfast and lunch only, but its definitely worth swinging by during your break. They have seating inside, which is fairly limited given the demand. There's a reason this place is out the door busy everyday. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

I searched Yelp for sandwich joints near my office building and stumbled across this gem. I ordered the blue plate special to go, and was not disappointed! Really good sandwich. Great gravy and potatoes. I'm dinging them 1 star because the corn was terrible. I think it came straight out of a can without even being heated first. It really had that old canned taste to it. Everything else was outstanding though! I would have like to have the bread toasted for an open faced sandwich but thats just a nitpick. I'll see if they can do that for me next time, since I'll definitely be back!

Had the roast beef and cheddar au jus, potato cakes and an A&W...$6.86. Now the potato cakes aren't what I expected. They're those "hash brown" type potato patties; having said that, they were good. Crispy outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich was solid and tasty, the au jus had plenty of flavor and with the horse radish, it was a filling meal. Next time I'm having the Blue Plate special. Mind the hours; as of today 7:30 am - 10:30 am: 11:00 am -3:00 pm. period.

Good basic roast beef sandwich, a little on the small side. Added Swiss cheese and some of their horseradish sauce. The flavor was very good, it didn't need any salt or pepper. Careful with the horseradish sauce, this stuff was potent. It was closer to wasabi than any horseradish sauce I've ever had. The fries were good but I don't think worth almost twice as much as a McDonalds small fry. They were very close in size. Again, seasoning was good, somewhat crispy, good, but I don't think 1.79 good. I understand they are in a high rent space in an office building, but, they should have thought of that. I think for that price they should be overflowing the small bag that they come in. The staff were great, and attentive, but this place is kind of out of the way for me. Next time I think I'll hit up Mavericks in Roseville, great food and larger portions for the money.

Pretty disappointed in the roast beef sandwich however the Aus Jus was decent. I ordered the Wallys roast beef sandwich and Aus jus sauce with a chocolate malt. Customer service was slowish and the person that took my order was a young gal who felt like I was inconveniencing her and was quite snarky. Also, the Aus jus sauce spilt all over my passenger seat due to their unsecure styrofoam container! The malt was runny and not mixed well! Save your money and head to Arby's instead!

First time for me at the new location. Wally's is every bit as good as I remember. They even managed to create some of the old time restaurant feel in the first floor of this large suburban office building. It's easy to get to, just off Penn Ave and just south of about 3 dozen un memorable suburban restaurants at Penn and I-494. Get here and you won't be disappointed. Lots of free parking. This is THE PLACE in the southern twin cities to eat roast beef. Try Mavericks in Roseville if you are on the north side or closer to either downtown. Wally's and Mavericks. There is no other place for roast beef. I'm a fan of the standard roast beef sandwich with a side of potato cakes. Superb. Great horseradish puts a kick in your sandwich! It staff is fast, friendly, and look like they've worked here since the place opened back in 1969. That's a good thing in case you are wondering. Wally's is a gem, a real treat, very original and well worth your time.

I once worked at a hospital and there was a janitor there who did his job with unbelievable dedication and thoroughness. Very few noticed and he certainly wasn't promoted or celebrated - he just did a very simple job, incredibly well and it was inspiring. This is Wally's. Nothing pretentious, nothing extreme, nothing earth-shattering but everything very, very good, and pulled off flawlessly. You won't find any breast-fed, yoga farmed, freely messaged Kobe organic beef here - just very good beef and sides. When you factor in how incredibly cheap this place it, it may be the best value I've ever had. The cheese, su jus, potatoes, sauces - all excellent!

I'm not a roast beef guy. As far as lunch meat is concerned, I'm a ham guy or maybe a turkey guy. To me, roast beef tastes like some weird Thing, and not like its name would have you believe - in my opinion, most "roast beef" tastes nothing like the flesh of a roasted cow. As a result, I never order it. I was looking for a nice place near Edina to have lunch with my fiance, and stumbled upon the Yelp reviews for Wally's. It looked good, it was cheap, and it was close to where we needed to be to have a quick lunch during the work week. Damn. THIS is roast beef. THIS is how it should taste. If all roast beef tasted like this, I would eat roast beef every damn day. Until today, I had no idea that it could be this good. In a way, this place was a small culinary epiphany for me. We had Phillies. They had tomatoes on them? That was weird. I think next time I'd just get the French Dip and say screw the vegetables. I gave this place four stars because the fries were very average, and the chocolate malt was the same. It's hard to screw up either of those things, but when you're presented with one item on the menu of such superb quality, it's kind of a let down when other things on the menu don't quite match up. Also, get a soda fountain. Cans of soda at a restaurant are dumb. But now I'm just being a pain in the ass.

I'd been to Wally's a few times when it was located in the strip mall on 90th and Penn but hadn't been to their new location until recently. The new setup and lay out of the restaurant is really nice but seems out of place in the office building it's located in now. I can only speak to the roast beef sandwiches here and have to say they are top notch. You can also ask for their BBQ and horseradish sauces to accompany your sandwich as well if au jus or cheese aren't your thing.

Wally's makes the absolute best roast beef sandwich, I've went here since I was a child and they have always tasted great, I don't even use sauce. My only complaint is that whenever I've had a malt here it has been really syrupy. They make up for it though by carrying the best cream soda on the planet; Sprecher. I do miss the old location, felt like a neighborhood lunch counter, the new location has a much different feel to it, kinda like a corporate cafeteria. It's actually located in an office building now, a really strange change, but ultimately what matters is that Wally's is still an excellent place to eat. I'm almost positive that you will love the roast beef at Wally's, I highly recommend it

While working in Minneapolis, I was looking for some local flavor. This is simply a great place for simple comfort foods for lunch. Its clean good and cheap. It is packed at lunch time so if you're in a hurry go early.

The roast beef is so magical you'd think it's unicorn meat. The milkshakes and root beer are great too. Oh, and all of the employees are exceptionally nice for a diner type restaurant. I think I'm in love with this place.

I'd heard about Wally's awhile ago, but hadn't had the chance to eat there until yesterday when I was in the area for work. I ordered a plain roast beef sandwich, fries and a grape soda. my order was just under $8 which is reasonable but by no means cheap. Lets start with the Roast Beef which is why I wanted to come here. I love a good roast beef sammy and this one was pretty good. Real roasted beef sliced in the store, unlike what they try and pass off as meat at your local Arby's. It did need a bit of salt and pepper and it could have been just a bit warmer, but overall it was delicious. The roast beef gets a strong 4 stars A bit more generous of a portion and a warmer sandwich would have pushed it to a 5 The fries were definitely not hot. I think if they had been fresher they might have been really good. The oil they were fried in could have been a bit fresher as well. I think next time I'll go for the mashed potatoes. 2 stars on the fries. But since the place is called Wally's Roast Beef and not Wally's fries I'll give the place a 4. I'll be back for a blue plate and a malt someday.

I work very close to Wally's, and have been meaning to stop there for several years. I finally made a trip there with my father last week. My dad and I both agreed: this is a nice restaurant with good food and decent prices, but it's not one that either of us would rave about or go to great lengths to go to again. The atmosphere is inviting and models the old-school diner, complete with green faux-leather seats. This is somewhat incongruous, as Wally's sits on the bottom floor of a low-rise corporate building. I never saw the original location, but understand they tried to emulate it here. Lunches are very busy; we arrived at 11:30 and were able to order right away, but within 10 minutes the line was back to the door. Our order-taker was friendly and efficient, and I think I paid somewhere on the order of $12 for my classic roast beef sandwich and cheese fries along with my dad's "Blue Plate Special" (half roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy). We got our water (in a plastic cup from a pitcher) and sat down and our food was brought to us within a few minutes. The service was speedy and done cheerfully! My roast beef sandwich had high-quality ingredients. You can see the roast-beef slicer in action behind the counter, so you know it's fresh. The beef was very tasty and served on a fresh and light bakery-type bun. I lathered it with Wally's horseradish sauce, which has a nice flavor without being overpowering. You will not be overwhelmed by the *amount* of roast beef on the sandwich; I honestly expected to have a little more meat on my sandwich, and other people I've talked with have said the same thing. I saw multiple other reviews online that raved about the cheese fries. I was not impressed. The fries themselves are pretty solid, although I would rank Culver's fries higher. The "cheesy" part is merely a side cup of liquefied cheese product that probably instantly increases your heart-attack risk 17%. The same "cheese" that you get on the packaged nachos-and-cheese at a ball field. Not worth it. My father enjoyed his roast beef, potatoes, and gravy, but shared the same basic sentiments as I: solid, enjoyable, quality, but not outstanding. You won't be disappointed in your meal at Wally's, but I don't expect that you'll lie awake at night dreaming of your next visit there either...

I am a tremendous fan of Wally's Roast Beef. My parents took me to this place as a child and I continue to happily go as an adult. If you want the signature Roast Beef sandwich, Saturdays are the day to go - they have Daily Specials, and Saturdays are 2 Roast Beef sandwiches for $5.50 (I think). Otherwise the sandwiches are around $3.50 each. Honestly, I've only ever ordered the RB with au jus. My husband has ordered the blue and green plate specials and has been super happy with it, so I have no doubt that the other food is great. I just can't resist the med-rare to medium cooked beef piled generously on a bun, dipped in au jus, followed with a big gulp of a strawberry malt.. It's the opposite of fancy. Plastic table coverings, an old Juke Box in the back corner, food is brought out on plastic trays and you serve your own sauces from the sauce bar in the back. The horseradish is amazing here, creamy and spicy. It's always packed - during peak lunch times there is a line out the door. Service is usually great, I wish I knew the name of the man who appears to be the owner, he always thanks people for coming in. It's nice to feel like your business is appreciated.

This is a real Minneapolis classic, one of those slices of Americana you just cannot manufacture in a test kitchen, marketing department, or food lab. You get real roast beef sandwiches, fries, and other old time diner treats at fantastically low prices (in large portion). Wally's is a great place with somewhat limited hours, so check ahead before you come (but do indeed go if you have not been).

LOVE WALLY'S! had to take a break from there because i was going too much! Service is usually quick depending on what you order. If you order anything outside of the hot plates or roast beef or fries, you will wait for a little bit. The french dip and philly are massive and very filling. Make sure you put some creamy horseradish on there because it adds that little kick every roast beef sandwich needs! Always busy and not too far from work. Will be a repeat customer for life as long as I live in MSP!

My boyfriend brought me here despite my mood, not to eat heavy, brown roast beef. At first, I ordered an open faced hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. He ordered a roast beef sandwich with bacon, topped it with hot melted cheddar cheese, and horseradish and fries. I took a few bites of mine, then I tried his. Mmmmm...was my exact response, We threw out the rest of mine and my boyfriend bought me a new sandwich like his. It was sooooo good! Freshest, thin sliced, still pink,m roast beef I've ever had; and the horseradish was one of a kind. The fries were also awesome. I totally recommend this place over Arby's any day... LOVE!!!

Wally's is located in a strip mall in western Bloomington. Now don't let that stop you from experiencing the best roast beef sandwiches this side of, well, anywhere. This no-frills "fast-food" type restaurant has fantastic blue plate specials, delicious fries, and sweet, sweet malts. Wally's has been in existence for decades for a reason. Try it! NOW! Oh, and watch out, because it has limited hours. It's not open on Sundays and only open 10:30-3 Monday through Saturday. website: wallysroastbeef.com

please note the address - they have relocated. roast beef sandwiches here are the best. i discovered this place a long time ago due to an article in the sun current. they had some crazy special like $1 sandwiches or something so i gave it a try. instantly loved it. i no longer live in the minneapolis area but make a big effort to get here anytime i am in town. i was in mpls for work a few weeks ago and stopped in. i get a roast beef plain, then dress it with horseradish and pickles. also get fries and chocolate shake. all in all one hell of a meal. the prices have increased over the years but it is still reasonable. have gotten then blue plate special in the past and that is good as well. if you are in the area i would suggest you give this place a try - it may look like a dive but its good.

Nothing fancy, but great roast beef sandwiches and fries. Plus they serve a wide selection of sodas, including Sprecher root beer. It's a little hard to find since it's in an office building, but Wally's is well worth a trip.

For this type of establishment, this was as good as it gets. The food was great. The roast beef sammys rocked. The horseradish sauce, which I usually hate anywhere else, was phenomenal. I also tried a burger, and it was very good. They actually cooked it medium rare, which is rare in places like this. Usually you get something more resembling a petrified piece of wood than a tasty, juicy, well-cooked burger. Also, the service was the best. Super friendly employees who were clearly well trained. All things considered, I can't believe I never heard of this place before today. Where have I been?

Food tasted great but sandwiches were a little small, probably a good thing. Also, a little expensive.

This place makes you feel like you got in a time machine, went back to the fifties, and ate at the original Arby's. The small storefront is packed with people waiting to get in and order one of their scrumptious roast beef sandwiches. I went on a Saturday morning and ordered their 2 RB sandwich special with the Au Jus sauce. The roast beef is sliced in front of you from a just out of the oven roast beef. It isn't the artificial, pre-packaged lunch meat, type of roast beef you would find at Arby's. A wide bowl of Au Jus is served with the Sandwiches so that you can dip the whole thing right in the sauce. Yum!

My co-worker told me about this place and took me here a few years back and I really enjoyed the small town feel it had even though it was pretty busy with the lunch crowd. I had the classic roast beef sandwich and fries with a side of cheese sauce and a chocolate milk shake. I thought it was neat how the spoke the order to the back kitchen by speaking into the microphone right next to their register and you saw them carving the roast beef right behind the order takers and you could tell that the fries were made fresh. I have since brought my parents there because they really miss the local owned restaurants that they grew up with back in IL and so they really loved this place and usually make up some excuse to come up around my work around the lunch hour and then suggest that we go to Wally's for lunch.

Wally's, known for its roast beef sandwiches, is an unassuming place and good for a simple lunch. I've had both the Big Smokey and the plain roast beef sandwiches. The Big Smokey is roast beef with bacon and smoked cheddar. It has a delicious smoke flavor without being cloying or overpowering. The plain roast beef is great with horseradish. Service is limited to ordering at the counter and delivery to your table. The place is a hole in the wall which can get crowded during lunch. There is outside seating in the summer consisting of a few plastic tables on the sidewalk facing the parking lot.

Typical Midwest fare... Their most popular item is the 'Blue Plate Special' which is a roast beef sandwich covered in gravy, with some mashed potatoes and corn. The quality of food was good. It's definitely edible, but the recipes are a little basic and lack a chef's touch. If you are in the mood for some basic comfort food then Wally has your back.

Got to love comfort food. Old school style roast beef like moms but Wallys.

I have been visiting Wally's for a decade now. Fantastic roast beef sandwiches, bbq, some of the soups. Their blue plate special is great along with the BLT's. Today I tried the Philly, it was good but, the cheese was um what seemed like cheese whiz (or such), otherwise everything else on the sandwich was good. My favorites are the roast beef either with Au Jus or Horseradish.

I finally made it to Wally's and was not disappointed! We had the roast beef sandwiches and onion rings. The counter folks were very pleasant and kept the line moving. Our food arrived pretty quickly and everything was great. The only thing I wasn't too impressed by was the "cheese" and the "horseradish" - both had sauce like consistencies, I'd prefer the real thing. The place was packed and all the food around me looked delish! I will be back!

I'm not sure what the other reviewers experienced, but this is exactly the same food as the old Wally's location. I stick to the roast beef or BBQ sandwiches. Need to like your meat in the rare direction to like this place.

Folks, Wally's has moved. They are no longer in a strip mall, but now on the first floor of an office building on Penn Ave S. Still the same great food I mentioned, though!

(5)Michael F.

(4)Sue M.
(5)Sarah S.
(3)Aero E.
(4)Jenni B.
(3)Leanna G.
(2)Rhonda G.

(4)The L.
Sold comfort food. Wish the gravy was a little better. They use a jarred or canned gravy that has a very malty taste. Otherwise fantastic. Homemade potatoes, nice roast beef, some fixin's and BBQ sauce. Nice little place.
(4)Nick E.
Classic roast beef sandwiches in a classic 50 ' s atmosphere. The service is very good for a diner style place. Have eaten here many times and will do so going forward. Suggestions are the roast beef sandwich with cheese sauce or au jus. Or any of the plate specials.
(5)Jennifer P.
If you like a solid no frills French dip with au jus....this place is a must visit. Shakes are great, too!
(5)Sam G.
I can't get enough of their smokey turkey or their blue plate special! This place always hits the spot when I'm craving something hearty.
(5)Joe B.
(5)Nicholas F.
(2)Joel B.
Roast beef yummmm. Wow, inexpensive and very tasty. I tried the Cheese Soup as well. Awesome. Definitely add some horsey sauce to your RB sandwich... makes it just right. Drive around the building, you'll find it. No prob...
(5)Brendan T.
Old school done right! Great roast beef and kicking horseradish as well as great mashed potatoes and shakes.
(4)Glen S.
(3)Colin D.
(4)Laura P.
(4)Matthew K.
This has to be the friendliest place on earth. The food is great but the service and staff are probably the most pleasant people I have encountered. It's a great place to enjoy some sincerely friendly service.
(5)Joel P.
Hooray for Wally's. Go with the classic.
(4)Matt M.
Blue plate is always the best!!!!
(5)Danielle S.
(1)Dave W.
Good food, good prices, daily lunch specials... not open for dinner or on Sunday, an anomaly in the 21st century. Friendly restaurant and spiffy looking... new location is great.
(5)Eddy V.
big dissapointment! the $ 3.49 sandwich had if lucky about 2 oun. of beef on it and the bad cheese came in a little plasic container save the money and put a slice of cheese on it and a another oun.of beef fresh baked bun ! won't be back switch the orange sunkiss for a crush !!!!!!
(2)Johnny E.
(5)Sarah U.

A staple of Bloomington! It's a great place to grab lunch! Expect a long line at lunch!

Fabulous food! The roast beef is delicious & the smokey turkey is scrumptious! Got here about 11:30 & just beat the rush!!

(2)Danielle E.
(4)Jeremy D.

Good, stick to your ribs kinda food that's so well priced...you just have to say, "yes!" The location is a bit awkward... Other than that, the service is fast, and I'll be back!
(4)Jozy G.
Yum! Hearty portions and delicious beef / au jus. Highly recommend! Busy during weekday lunch hour...go early!
(4)Spencer D.
Smokey cheddar, roast beef, horse radish, bun. Awesome.
(5)Pat R.
(4)Matt G.

(5)Chris W.
(4)Ken R.
Mind the hours; as of today 7:30 am - 10:30 am: 11:00 am -3:00 pm. period.
(4)Chaco D.
I met the owner on vacation in Lanesboro last summer and decided to give it a try. Absolutely exceptional roast beef and mashed potatoes. This is one of my new favorites places! I recommend this for a great casual lunch with friends and family.
(5)Justin A.
Best place for roast beef in the Twin Cities. Definitely try the blue plate special as well as the red and green.
(5)Jay B.
(4)Nhi V.

(5)Ben K.
(4)Bronson M.
(4)Josh M.
I'm almost positive that you will love the roast beef at Wally's, I highly recommend it
(5)Joe T.
While working in Minneapolis, I was looking for some local flavor. This is simply a great place for simple comfort foods for lunch. Its clean good and cheap. It is packed at lunch time so if you're in a hurry go early.
(4)Ben N.
The roast beef is so magical you'd think it's unicorn meat. The milkshakes and root beer are great too. Oh, and all of the employees are exceptionally nice for a diner type restaurant. I think I'm in love with this place.
(5)Steve S.
(4)Michael S.
(4)Anita S.
(4)Jamison U.
(4)Jon G.
(4)Brandy S.
LOVE!!!
(5)Nick L.

(5)Stacey P.
Nothing fancy, but great roast beef sandwiches and fries. Plus they serve a wide selection of sodas, including Sprecher root beer. It's a little hard to find since it's in an office building, but Wally's is well worth a trip.
(4)Patrick C.
(5)Brian C.
Food tasted great but sandwiches were a little small, probably a good thing. Also, a little expensive.
(4)Ryan Y.
Yum!
(4)Debbie C.
(4)Scott M.
(4)Josh C.
(3)Matt B.
Got to love comfort food. Old school style roast beef like moms but Wallys.
(4)Chris W.
(5)Wendy D.
(4)Steve P.
I'm not sure what the other reviewers experienced, but this is exactly the same food as the old Wally's location. I stick to the roast beef or BBQ sandwiches. Need to like your meat in the rare direction to like this place.
(5)Dan S.
Folks, Wally's has moved. They are no longer in a strip mall, but now on the first floor of an office building on Penn Ave S. Still the same great food I mentioned, though!
