David Fong’s Restaurant Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Service was just fine. The food was....gross. The food is honestly subpar to the Panda Express. I had pork fried rice, chow mein, and egg foo young. I ended up boxing up most of it rather than sending it back because I could tell by the looks of the place that it isn't a place that foodies go to get their fix.I think this is Chinese food before people had sophisticated palates. I don't think I can drag on about the details because the food was so disappointing. I will not be back.

Visiting Bloomington with my husband's family and David Fong's restaurant is always a place to eat at. I had the shrimp lo mein (yum!), which tasted very close to how they made it at China town in the Philippines. My husband loves the egg foo young. Our waitress Shelly was great.

I do enjoy their food and the owner was always very personable with the customers and I remember in high school I took a foods class and he came and showed us how to make their yummy fried rice and then gave us all a big bowl each for free! And then he remembered me a few months later and gave me a free appetizer :) their food isnt the best but it definitely is enjoyable but thats only because the only actual meal ive ever tried there is their egg foo young which is still delicious.

I grew up in Bloomington but after moving away it had been 35 years since I went back to Fongs. Was the food as good as the memories? It was better! The "cooked to order" chow mein was better than anything I had eaten from Nankin, Howard Wongs, Cathay, Hong Kong, Port Arthur, or any other place. I am spoiled now. Hey Mr. Fong, would you please open a restaurant in White Bear Lake? Please?

I really don't know how this place is still in business. I know when I visited David Fong's several years ago at one of their locations in Minneapolis I probably had the worst Chinese food ever! This foul bastardisation of Asian food is an affront to those who value good food all the way around! Any self respecting lover of Asian food would go picket this place, yes P-I-C-K-E-T! When I stopped to eat there we placed our order and the waitress seemed relatively friendly however during the order she completely messed up the order for the person with whom I was with. So needless to say he was going to get an entree he did not want. The soup arrived which was decent but when the main course arrived my chicken teriyaki had chicken strips which looked like they were taken out of a package and the entire rest of the dish was smothered with a brown gravy-ish like substance. I gave it a try and it tasted just like how it looked-awful! Other guests dining there were also having problems with their dishes too -something related to spiciness. I did not know the exact details because I was in shock with what was before my eyes on the dinner table. My Coke that I ordered was supposed to be a Cherry Coke instead there was a thick layer of Grenadine on the bottom with the soda itself on the top. The waitress came back and realized she screwed up the order during the ordering process and that was when she realized she was very incompetent and would much rather had been somewhere else rather than waitressing. We tried to be polite but I covered my dish with the napkin in which she said ' I think it is dead.' We finally received the bill in which my friend was paying and he needed clarification about the payment process. I don't know everything she said but we did hear her say 'I ain't getting no tip anyway!' Mortified we left hoping that we did not get food poisoning which by a miracle we didn't The food was so bland that a senior's meal would seem like eating a raw jalapeno. Don't get me wrong David Fongs is a great place to eat if you want to poison your date or if you are a giant fly and like to sponge garbage off your plate. Avoid this one folks at all cost, yes A-V-O-I-D!!

I am usually disappointed in Chinese food here in MN - this place was OK. I had the beef & broccoli (extra spicy please!) and the hubs had Kung Bo Shrimp (hold the water chestnuts). I was surprised that the food was actually a bit on the spicy side (a rarity for these parts, yes?). The portions were huge and they sent us home with a bunch of sauces (no skimping on the duck sauce). Overall, I was satisfied.

Service was good, but the food was just OK (we had Mongolian Beef, Fong's Chow Mein, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and another beef disk). I was surprised with how full the parking lot and restaurant were based on the disappointing food. It's wasn't inexpensive either. Kitsch level was high, if that's your thing.

The best Chinese we've had in a long time. We had: Pork egg foo young, Chinese vegetables, chicken fried rice, egg rolls, cream cheese wontons. I haven't eaten at the restaurant in a few years, but the take out is always hot, & the order correct! Awesome, only Chinese we'll eat in the cities.

This by far was the WORST Chinese food I have ever had in my life. NO JOKE. A friend of mine sold me on this place by telling me it had been there 50 years, and that it was 'killer'. Well, let me tell you a few warning signs that should've told me otherwise: 1. On the menu they have 'cream cheese puffs'. Never have seen that on a Chinese menu, and I told the waitress that. She was oblivious. 2. Old lady next to me got her entree', and it was a friend cutlet of something, with: COLESLAW, A ROLL with butter, and FRENCH FRIES. What Chinese restaurant serves coleslaw!!!!?? NONE, that's which one. At this point, I should've ran, quickly, out of there. But I didn't. I stayed. 3. Finally, my entree came, sweet and sour chicken. I was assured before I ordered that it was all white meat. WELL, do you know why it was all white meat? Because my entree was four deep friend chicken tenders, with a few bits of pineapple, tomato, and green peppers, and then absolutely covered in some strange CLEAR goo of a sauce. I was appalled. I picked at it, and gave up. Seriously, it was just horrendous. Go to LeeAnn Chin if you have to. Just don't go here.

I'm sure this food was something special 50 years ago simply because there were no other Chinese food choices. Ordered sesame chicken and crab rangoon. Sesame chicken was rubbery and bland. Crab rangoon was mostly breading with a little bit of cream cheese and crab filling. I'm sure the wontons are similar. There are so many better choices out there. This place is no different than a Panda Express.

mediocre for my taste it's better than other chinese food places tho that daily special that i had - honey walnut shrimp was pretty good w/ broccoli/ rice - decor is neat & nice very vintage china style & it's i think the best chinese food u can get in MN - a kool fact it has been a family business for 50 yrs

Today my family tried David Fongs for lunch since we were in the area. The three of us were seated rapidly and waited 10 mins for menus and water. This was preceded by a 40 min wait for our meal. We should have walked out because the food was horrific. The egg rolls were reheated, stale and cold. The two stir fry dishes were really just pre- made sauce heated and served with steamed vegetables. We had to ask multiple times for items - water, chop sticks, and white rice. The wait staff was courteous but too few to handle the diners. Regarding the decor- think retro 1950 without any updates, red walls, Christmas tree lights and bad art. If this is the type of establishment you seek.... Go, otherwise run quickly to a nearby burger joint, we did after buying lunch.

The food is TERRIBLE, but I go back a couple times a year for the kitsch. It is so 50's American/Chinese tacky that I can't help enjoying a drink there from time to time.

Favorite Chinese eatery.... Bar none! I grew up in Bloomington and had Fongs weekly and I still crave it. Chic chow mien is the bomb along with great lo mein. Try a Mai-tai or two but don't try to drive as they are strong.

The only Asian person in here is the hostess. Why do people eat here? It was literally all older white people that apparently have never eaten good Asian food. This food is SO over priced. $16 for tofu and broccoli? The decor is a 1950s steakhouse with Asian decorations. I'm typing this as I wait for my check while staring at my empty water glass. Ugh.

I tried the sesame chicken, medium heat. Which had good flavor but it was nothing extraordinary. Substituted white rice with fried rice which was about as good. Cream cheese puffs were pretty terrible sadly. Won ton wrap was too thick and a task to bite through. Not much cheese inside. Sweet and sour sauce was awesome so I was especially disappointed about the puffs. The third star is only included in my rating cause I thought our server was great and I enjoyed our visit anyhow.

Fongs is a rare treat. It's tough to find Chinese food that stands out or a restaurant that has been open for more than 5 years. Usually they don't last and I bet you can't guess why. These guys have 50 plus years and still truckin. That's impressive. We had the dinner for three. It was awesome. Steak was really tender, chicken dish was great and the sweet and sour pork was unlike any I have had before. Big chunks of juicy pork, not little pre-cooked cubes. Super good egg rolls and wontons! They also had karaoke going on and poker on Mondays. The prices were perfectly acceptable. Next time I'm trying the famous chicken chow mien!

Just watched the 'Searching for General Tso' documentary last night so had a renewed appreciation for Chinese immigrants wanting to make a living in the US. Of course they had to adapt to American tastes. The decor is really neat. Very big space with a bar. Our server was very friendly. To our suprise General Tso's chicken was only on the dinner menu so we ordered sesame chicken as our server suggested. My boyfriend wanted it extra spicy but it didn't really have any kick to it. My broiled walleye was decent. For the price point it was ok. Although you could go to a chinese buffet and get a better value. We were the only asians there. Definitely more of an american take on chinese food.

Unless you are a pretentious hipster or an uptight suburbanite germaphobe, this is the place for you. Red vinyl booths with red crazy carpeting=awesome. The food is plentiful and our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. I have had better Chinese food but never in a 1958 setting. If you like Liquor Lyles in Minneapolis, you'll enjoy this place. Kinda gritty, kinda old school and the best thing is, I am fairly sure they don't realize it.

Bland, terrible, aweful, gross, dry food. Even s&p couldn't fix it. I tried the tasting menu for 2 and was awfully dissatisfied. Course 1 was 1/2 of an egg roll cut into 2 quarters with 2 wontons. It was a disappointment that we didn't get 2 egg rolls (since we ordered the tasting for 2 people). Then came the egg drop soup which needed heaping amounts of s&p. This was followed by a very dry sweet and sour chicken and the cashew chicken, both awfully terrible, and fried rice which I believe was rice-a-roni. I've never been to an Asian restaurant where they messed up fried rice. For dessert, fortune cookies. I really wish I could get back the 1 hour of my life that I wasted here. So sad for what I thought was a Bloomington staple! Of all the aforementioned, the egg roll, wontons and the fortune cookie were very good.

I went to the bar mid afternoon to meet a friend. Drunken blue collar workers were swearing in the bar "fucking cunt" and "fag" were repeated over and over. I asked the bartender if they could tone it down. He said hey little lady. This is a working man's bar. If u can't handle the language the door swings both ways. I asked the manager for assistance. The situation got only slightly better. Scary offensive place and not safe for females.

We were at Fong's last week for a very special family gathering. While we had a large group, we did call in advance. Here's my take on the night @ Fong's ~ I'd say the staff was ok. Took a long time to get food ordered and to the table. I had ordered vegetable fried rice, but received chicken fried rice. When I pointed it out, it was brought to the kitchen. A long while later, a different tray of fried rice came out. It seemed to be overly done, and STILL had chicken in there. It seems like they may have tried picking the chicken out of the original chicken fried rice, but I guess I will never know ??? My husband and I felt sick all night and through the next day; we were the only ones for some reason to had gotten sick and the only ones who had the chicken fried rice. We got Fong'ed up, but it won't happen again! Had we not gotten sick, I'd say it was a 2.5 to 3 star place. Most people said the appetizers were good, but their main dishes were bland or just ok.

Fongs has a similar charm that Mancinis in St Paul has; old dedicated customers that have been coming for decades to enjoy good food and revisit a frozen moment in time. I never bothered to give it a try til recently and I've had it 3 times in the last year and all three times it was great. I recommend the Chinatown style steak, House chicken or chicken almond ding. Decor has not changed much in 50 years and the lamp above our table had a good years accumulation of dust, but it added to the nostalgic charm.

I have been here twice - Food was good / OK. Probably wont go back soon. Prefer the small place in Savage, believe it may be the same family. Maybe in the old and more formal atmosphere you expect more.

I grew up in Bloomington and always astound that this place still exist...I can't think a single dish why I would eat here... Yes, they serve alcohol... Yes, they have Karoke night... Yes, they might even have card games(is it legal?) on some nights... Yes, they have plenty of 'American' dishes...then why even bother with the crappy Chinse decore? Heck I would be impress if I get an Asian hostest/waiter/waitress... Bottom line, I can't find a single asian person in my life recommends me this place...I would be lucky to find an Asian person eat there. Hence we are done talking.

Bad service and bad food. I am still sitting at this restaurant waiting for our server to give me my check to end my suffering. The pan fried pot stickers had no crisp and were bland. The Mongolian beef special was salty and resembled Salisbury steak more than anything gourmet. The orange chicken was edible but bland. They gave us the wrong kind of fried rice but the shrimp and pea pods were OK. Took nearly 30 minutes to receive out food for some reason and whenever our server put food down on our table there was so much force it tended to spill. Yeah, not coming back EVER. Oh, as a "parting gift" my fortune cookie was empty which is bad luck - a curse?

If your looking for the "Asian" version of Applebee's, definitely hit this place up. It's always packed when we drive by, so we thought that we would give it a try. In my honest opinion, I think people are still eating here because their parents/grand parents/great grandparents had brought them here as a child...basically it's comfort food from their childhood days. The only thing Asian about this place is some of their workers and a tiny bit of the interior, other than that, it's a full blown American restaurant with Steak and all that other stuff. And yes, just because I'm Asian, it doesn't make me a Asian food Guru or anything, but I know the difference between Asian food and good old American food...and this isn't the place to hit up if your in the mood for anything close to Asian food.

I'm still not a100% and I didn't want something hard on my digestion. So I was very loose with lent and got the China Town Steak. There are some nice veggies that make it China style. I kind of remembered it at the last minute, the reviews of Adam and Dan, whose opinions I value highly. Of course I liked it, but I still want to try many other things. Basil had seafood delight that he liked a lot. I noticed shrimp toast just in time to order. Of all I've ever had it is the least greasy and just delicious. I swear there was shrimp in every bite of these good sized pieces. As you drive into the lot, it's totally packed, and it wouldn't surprise me if there's a party downstairs every Saturday night. I think of this as an upscale Chinese place for regular people. The staff are a mix of all sorts of races. We struck pay dirt with LU. So warm and friendly. It was a beautiful night for a drive. A new destination spot.

WORST CHINESE EVER! Please do yourself a favor and skip this dated, bland, gross food. Your stomach and wallet will thank you later. First time in my life that not only did I hate the food but left more for the garbage than I could consume. I'm pretty sure there was apple sauce in my sweet and sour and my almond chicken was one party chicken and nine part celery. Soup was straight out of can. Apps were dripping in grease out of the fryer. Easily the best part was the fortune cookie.

A great place to eat and meet up with friends. The food is always good and plentiful - you will not walk away on an empty stomach. I generally go there for Happy Hour and lunch and would recommend you give them a try. Ed Fong runs the place and is a staple of the great Bloomington Community!

I have eaten here five times now and I am still waiting for the meal that will change my opinion of this place. Granted, I visit alongside a large group of shipmates in a group atmosphere where it is more difficult to serve the way it would upstairs in the main dining room. I have tried all 3 options they allow us to choose from: Walleye, Filet, and "Cantonese Combo". Missing ingredient in all 3: flavor. Especially the "Cantonese Combo" gravy.. yes, gravy.. I thought this would be the specialty? I suppose it is time to shake up the old goat locker hell bent on this place.. 2 stars (not 1) for putting up with us...... Meeeaarrrrrrr!

We tried it because many of our coworkers love it. We've had better TV dinners. My meal looked like they boiled a chicken breast and some broccoli, plated it with a water chestnut, added a cornstarch and water "sauce" and served it. I wept for all the great cooks of Asia.

My wife and I visited David Fong's last night on a Friday. Neither of us had been to this Bloomington institution for a couple of years despite us living in Bloomington for several years, most likely because our experience back then was unimpressive. I have changed my general opinion based on last nights experience. We started with the egg rolls and if that was all we had all night this would have been a 2 star review. Just kind of funky tasting. Hard to describe. Not that great. My wife had the walnut shrimp. It was creamy, fresh and the shrimp was plentiful and not overcooked (like shrimp can often be). I had the Kung Bo Chicken. I ordered it "spicy" (choices = mild, medium, spicy, extra spicy). I generally like spicy food and this spice level was just about right. The all white chicken seemed perfectly cooked and the onions, green peppers and pea pods were very fresh and crisp, not overdone. My Dewers on the rocks pre-dinner was "generous", the service was great and the food came out fast. I am glad we decided to give this place a try again. We plan on checking out the chow mien take-out based on our server's description. Good chow mien is a rarity in Bloomington. We will let you know what we think!

David Fong's is a rare place. It's been open fifty years as of this writing. The decor is totally vintage, without being musty and dusty. The food, while good, is more like time travel. Think of it as eating Chinese food in the US in 1958, and you'll be in heaven, though. They get added points for having really solid tiki (ie tropical) drinks on the menu. Order the Chinatown steak, and you won't come away sad... Fong's... Catch the Fever!

Please?

Three words: China Town Steak. Two more words: Strong Drinks. Yes. That sounds wonderful. (And the House Chicken isn't bad, either.)

A great place to eat and meet up with friends. The food is always good and plentiful - you will not walk away on an empty stomach. I generally go there for Happy Hour and lunch and would recommend you give them a try. Ed Fong runs the place and is a staple of the great Bloomington Community!
