Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Texmex food prepared (un thawed) by Swedes. Great for taking your girlfriend out to eat before prom if you're 16. The staff is the best part of Ponchos. Bartenders and waitresses here are some of the best in Brainerd.

Came here with family for a 21st bday anyone under 21 is kicked out of the bar area after 9.. Pretty ridiculous!

Cute building. Looked and smelled good when we came in. Chips and salsa not authentic - kind of generic. Maybe they are Tostitos? Super nice waitress. Prices seem high and you pay extra for stuff you'd normally get included with your meal at a Mexican restaurant. On a quirky side note the water tastes great, which I find unusual at restaurants. Nice one time experience. Not sure I'd come again.

The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed, however the food was average at best. The salsa tasted like red water and onions. I ordered two beef enchiladas which were edible but nothing to write home about. But we are in north central Minnesota so what should I expect?

Food was fine, all ingredients seemed to be the same, just in a slightly different format. Tables could use some cleaning, ours was so sticky the bill stuck to it and ripped when trying to peel it off.

Poncho Lefty's has a nice layout and a very friendly staff. Your meal starts with free chips and bland salsa but the water cups are large which is a plus. I wasn't aware ahead of time it was a tex-mex joint so I was not too excited by the menu but I found something decent, the taco burrito. It was pretty gross and I'm not sure it even constitutes Tex-Mex. The refried beans and rice that my 10$ burrito didn't come with (it was an extra dollar) were fucking gross and seemed at least a day old. I would never come here again and only because the food sucked. The establishment and staff were awesome though so if you like crappy pseudo Mexican come here.

This is possibly the worst place I've eaten at in years. My wife had shredded beef enchiladas and I had chicken enchiladas. This tasted like it came out of a Swanson's TV dinner box. Please do yourself a favor and don't stop here. Taco Bell is 10 times better. We let the waitress know and she did give us 1/2 off of one entre. So cudos to her for making an attempt. Please fix the food or close the doors.

If you live in central or northern MN this is the closest thing to Mexican food that you will find. The food is not at all spicy but they do supply hot sauce if you ask. The food is Americanized and Minnesota-ized Mexican food. The service is great and all of the people that I have encountered working there speak Spanish. I visit my mom in Brainerd and this restaurant is in our rotation.

Great food great service! $10 off for Veterans! Will recommend to anyone. Clean resturant

Bland salsa, just disgusting beans... The portions are OK but it's mostly filler... Beams lettuce etc... The margaritas were only average, I suspect those that rave about them done enjoy in moderation? Not sure. Still passing through me 2 days later... My GF sure does not appreciate it.

Great white queso dip and the shrimp fajita burrito was delicious! Friendly and attentive staff. Glad we stopped here!

Been here a lot and have never had bad or slow service. Decent food and large portions. Not a margarita fan but my friends who are love them. Full menu in the bar as well.

In another lifetime this place used to be called Tijuans. On Friday nights at Tijuan's mom would take us and we would eat a "Macho Nacho". Mom would have a marg. Apparently the term "macho nacho" in Spanish means "enormous mountain of chips, cheese, meat, guacamole, and sour cream. It was a great dive restaurant. Poncho's is still pretty dive, and they still have the Macho Nacho but lacks the character of sleazier and older Tijuans. Oh well, life goes on! If you order the Fajitas they will be loudly sizzling when brought out, just make sure you don't get burned!

Just lacking on a few things that would put them over the top. They do have good happy hour prices on food and drinks.

Lot's of good Mexican food for the price - large portions - but service was sub-par and we were seated in a dark corner close to the cashier and forgotten. It took ten minutes after our drinks arrived to get napkins even after specifically asking for them.

I met my wife here so it can't be all bad!

Have been here many times. Service inconsistent, marginal at best. Food is good nothing over the top. Preference certainly goes to the locals or regulars here. If the bartender knows you, the service is much better. I was not offered the complimentary chips and salsa until I ordered food vs. the lady who came in after me who was a friend of the bartender and received the chips, salsa and the house ranch dip without asking for a menu or before ordering a drink .

Their margaritas are from a freshly made mix and are TO DIE for!! Yum! :)
(4)Krista B.
Salsa. Weak and bland. Margaritas. Overly sweet and minimalist. Queso dip. Runny and uninteresting. Not good at all. Why does everyone in brainerd think this this place is so awesome?

Great food and great deals. I go here whenever I am in Baxter during the afternoon. They have amazing happy hour specials both on drinks and also food! It is a Tex-Mex place, not authentic mexican so they have there own spin on things. But all-in-all good food. I love the chips, salsa, guacamole and the huge margaritas on the rocks!

Don't bother unless it's for Happy Hour.... Probably, the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Honestly, the food at Taco Bell and Taco John's is better....
