Fun and delicious. Loved the atmosphere. Staff was excellent. Olive plate app was yummy. Smoked salmon was great. Buttermilk cake dessert was outstanding.

Food tonight...not so good. This place used to have way better food. Bruschetta; bite size garlic chips with a little pesto and goat cheese. No biggie. Husband's pizza; Certainly didn't taste like a flatbread, pretty bland. Medallions; dry, way overcooked, felt like I was eating McDonald's meat patties. Really disappointing . Server was great. Music tonight? - Meh, but I am not a country fan and dislike Journey . If we go back will just have beers and apps. Too bad 'cuz we used to dig this place.

I was really hoping this would be a great little wine bar with great small plates, but the cheese & meat plate was extremely disappointing. Looked & tasted like store bought salami & cheese with a ton of olives. Not at all an artisan cheese selection like I was hoping. Flatbread was soggy & very greasy tasting. My point: stop in for wine, but skip the small plates.

A cozy wine bar/restaurant offering nicely decorated venue, ambiance and sophistication in the downtown area. Have been there with a group of 6, as a couple, and by myself, and have received the same friendly service every time. The menu is relatively small, with simple dishes, all nicely portioned. The wine list offers a very good variety (I discovered a wonderful Oregon pinot noir that I love!), and many kinds of beers (not a beer drinker, but there seemed to be something for every taste). As a California resident who visits family often in Alexandria, I really appreciate the choices Sixth Avenue offers that are lacking in the area -- and the live music they have very frequently is a definite plus!

It was awesome. Everything about it was amazing! The appetizer, entree, dessert, beer and wine were all spectacular. The best part was the live music and the service!

Fantastic wine list and wonderful small plates. My last visit, I ordered the wine plate, which had a wonderful assortment of cured meats, cheeses, fruits, pesto, crostini, almonds and more. It was fantastic, especially priced at 10 dollars. It reminded me of happy hour at a fantastic little wine bar on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica...sans the sunshine and palm trees. Ah--a wonderful taste of upscale in a town that caters to a blue collar crowd.

Featuring a nice sized menu of reasonably priced wines by the glass along with many good beers. Their food menu includes a nice selection for you or a group to enjoy. One of my favorites is the prosciutto wrapped asparagus.

I love this place. It is a gem for the Alexandria community. Try the pork tenderloin. Amazing!!!!!

What a fun place! Large wine list, lot of small plate options, some nice entrees, and desserts. We had the pork entree and the chicken pasta entrees with side salads. Very nice. We got helpful suggestions for wines along the way. There was some fun but loud live music so conversation would have been difficult but not impossible. A find for Alexandria, though.

To say it is an unexpected pleasure to find this wine bar downtown Alexandria is, I now believe, selling the town short. Clearly the locals know and love this place. Before long, my server had introduced herself and it was old home week. There is not a bit of attitude about SAWA, it is purely and simply a nice place to grab a glass of wine (or a bottle of craft beer) and hang out. I enjoyed the "wine lover's plate," which was a variety of fruit, cheeses, nuts, bread and olives. The small plate's portions were quite generous...I can only imagine the quantity that comes with the larger version. The chicken pizza recommended by my server offered generous chunks of the bird along with a cream sauce and toasted cheese on top...hot and delicious. The wine list itself was solid, boasting The Usual Suspects at the usual prices. The beer list was extensive, though it too contained few surprises. I understand that there is also live music on Thursdays and the odd Saturday as well. SAWA is well worth a visit--you will certainly find something to enjoy at this most pleasant establishment.

Looks like a fun place to gather and have a couple drinks, however, the food was not that good. They do have an extensive beer offering (all bottled beer) of which staff had little knowledge. The problem is they offer too many types of beer and the staff is not helpful so either you are choosing because you had it before, or you like the name. They really should offer fewer beer choices and know more about the selections or offer half a dozen decent tap beer offerings from more local brewers and know more about these selections. We will not return.

We have just moved to the area and were looking for a fun, romantic place to celebrate our one year anniversary. Sixth Avenue Wine & Ale did not disappoint us. We ordered the special, beef tips, with asparagus and roasted potatoes. The beef was fantastic with a great spice rub and cooked to perfection. The potatoes were also well seasoned. We ordered the chocolate blossom for dessert and it was delicious. A live jazz band was playing and people we dancing (us included) which was fun. The wine was pretty good. The staff let us sample a few for free, which was nice. We will being going here again.

Five stars for being one of the very few upscale places in town. Sixth Avenue is a fantastic wine bar, with a stellar menu and a great wine list. I highly recommend the honey mead...served warm, and the scrumptious chocolate fondue. The ambiance is classy bistro, with fire places, relaxing couches, free wi-fi, and a game table in the corner for those long Alexandria winter nights. You could, if you didn't look outside for a second, imagine yourself in Chicago or New York, it's that well done. Definitely something worth checking out if you're looking for a nice night out in Alex.

I asked for Chef Jensens recommendations and was very please with the Beef Bourguignon feature and Chocolate Blossom dessert, along with accompanying beverages of his selection. Great service, presentation, quality, and value. I'll definitely be back and would recommend this place for date night, daily celebrations, the after work wind-down (wine-down), and as in my case, the solo-business traveler who appreciates a wholesome meal at the bar.
