Amazing lunch specials, good food, not the cleanest place but well worth it!

Love this place. They always get my food right and right out. I like their larger menu so i can mix it up sometimes. All the dishes they prepare are great, never a bad experience.

I really would have liked to give this a rating of 2.5 stars since I'm choosing to round up. I tried the rainbow chicken from a catered event and it tasted great! There were tons of veggies and a wonderfully flavorful brown sauce! It was really tasty and it made me want to go back and get my own personal order. So, one day I went after church and got the rainbow chicken lunch special. I appreciated that you could get the lunch special even on the weekend because many places only run specials through the week. The lunch special came with the rainbow chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll for $4.29. You can't really beat that deal. Upon opening my order, I saw that the fried rice was just that...fried rice. I saw that it said fried rice but I was expecting at least some sort of veggie medley in it. I would have liked some carrots, bean sprouts, snap peas...something to add a little bit more flavor. I guess I could have upgraded to a veggie or chicken or shrimp fried rice but at that price, you can't really complain. When I got home and tried my food for the first time, it didn't taste quite as good as the catered food. It had a slightly off, weird aftertaste that's hard to describe. I guess I can best describe it as not the freshest. Perhaps this is just the case for lunch specials and not the catered food. It's a good bang for your buck but in the future, I think I'll probably opt to pay a little bit more for more flavorful rice and fresher tasting ingredients.

Not really delicious to Chinese guys.. Authentic Americanized Chinese food.. Highly recommend that Chinese pal don't try that one

This place is strangely delicious. If you're craving cheap, steamy Americanized lo mein, broccoli beef, egg rolls, and hot and sour soup pumped full of MSG, China Chef is your place. Where else can you get lunch for $4.29 in these parts?!?! If you call for takeout they can have your order ready in 10 minutes. Portion sizes are out of this world.

Amazing food, with huge portions. Definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in Washtenaw County

DELICIOUS FOOD AND INEXPENSIVE!!! What more can you ask for? This place is my new favorite chinese restaurant hands down! I had never had General Tso Chicken that was both tender and crunchy. (usually just mushy) It also has a delightful nutty flavor to it that I really enjoyed. Their lunch specials are amazing!! You get a generous portion entree (easily two meals), choice of fried or steamed rice and an egg roll for just $4.50!! There are over fifteen entree's to choose from and they are freshly cooked with each order. On a negative note, I will say this. The restaurant interior is nothing to rave about, it could really use a woman's touch. But some of the best and most delicious restaurants are the "hole in the walls." If you don't care about looks and want delicious and inexpensive food, China Chef is your best bet. :)

Best General's Chicken in town (A2 & Ypsi)!

  • Wally S.

Stopped in for s quick bite. Very reasonably priced. General's Chicken was different than most but still very tasty. Garlic Chicken was tasty as well. For the price, you can't really find much wrong here. Fried dumplings were good but I'd swear they were frozen first. Skip the egg rolls. They were terrible.

Do not waste your time. Food quality was poor. Price was inexpensive but food had little flavor.

Amazing food and value! Consistent each visit now over a year. Don't be put off by the "hole in the wall appearance", you will be rewarded! Ask for the "other menu" (actual Chinese food) and try the squid in black bean sauce, pot stickers (fried of course), beef chow fun and amazing salt & pepper fish (or chicken).

  • Linny L.

Great "wok hei" sear on the lo mein noodles. The beef noodle soup was very satisfying. There were a lot of customers coming in for lunch, and I know now that it's not just for the cheap prices, but the tasty dishes!

Large portions for cheap. Excellent chili oil! The chili pieces in the oil are soft so you can eat them, not burnt and hard. The menu says things are spicy but they aren't...ask for extra chili!

I agree with other low star yelpers this is not good chinese food. I went in for lunch and was surprised to hear an asian owner speaking spanish. He was googling me the whole time I was there...I guess thats why I feel it is awkward to eat alone. He was serving the whole resturant by himself with several chefs in the back. I saw my order get finished and sit for awhile cause he didn't hear them say it was done. I think I might be being overly critical cause I was alone...But as for the food the fried rice was rather bland and dry. The egg roll...forget it. It was hard on the outside and chewy on the inside because there was too much dough. I actually didn't finish it was so bad. The only redeeming quality of the whole meal was the meat and vegetables covered in sauce because that had good flavor and I thought was cooked well. Honestly I want to say I'd go again but probably not. I'd rather eat alone at a bar where I could at least get drunk if the food is terrible lol

Best Chinese in the area. Hands down. And I've tried them all. i stopped going here several years ago after a bad experience and started going to another nearby Chinese establishment because I liked the service better. Unfortunately, while ok, the food just wasn't as good. I recently went back to China Chef and the difference is evident. Now I can't seem to stop. So good. The egg rolls are crispy and delicious. The pot stickers perfect, hot and sour soup as good as it gets. The General Tso's Chicken sets the standard, and my personal favorite - Beef Chow Fun, should be called Beef Wow Fun (sorry). I'd put this on par with the best Chinese food I've had in San Francisco's and Boston's Chinatowns. Nothing fancy, but damn is it delicious.

I forgot exactly what day my husband and I decided to come here, but I'm glad we did! We ordered two appetizers and two house specials. Their Fried Dumplings were such a great price for how much you get! They're so big and juicy! The sauce is typical dumpling sauce which was still very good. Their Crispy Fried Fish seemed fresh. I'm glad it didn't taste like it came out of a box full of already cut frozen fish pieces. It was great for the price as well. Their Emperors Pork reminded me of any sweet and sour dish. It didn't wow me or anything. It actually seemed pretty similar to a regular General Tso's Chicken. Either way, I wasn't disappointed about it. The last dish was the Fried Squid. Man was this dish worth it for the price! It was spicy and crispy just like I expected it to be. Yummy! ;) The reason for the 4 stars is because the Emperors Pork smelled the same way as it went in and came out which can be a big turn off (x_x) Other than that, I did like the food and for the prices, the portions are pretty big. I would probably return for the Fried Squid :)

I came here on a whim while I had some time to kill a couple weeks ago waiting at St. Joe's down the street, so I dropped by for some eat-in dinner. The place itself is okay looking- pretty generic, run of the mill, American Chinese decor. My dinner was served on plasticware which is kind of a drag, but when prices are this cheap, (and i'm a cheapskate myself), that's okay by me. I decided to venture from the usual fare and went for the Mongolian Beef and I was not disappointed. The mongolian beef itself was sauced well, slightly spicy and had lots of fresh onion and vegetables that added to the tenderness of the Beef. And there was so much on my dinner plate along with some okay fried rice, I took some home for later. I did spy on the specials board that they had some interesting items that I may want to try next time such as salt and pepper chicken... if it's in any way shape or form similar to salt and pepper squid like they serve in higher-end chinese restaurants, i may come back and give this place 5 stars! definitely come here if you're looking for good Chinese food at rock-bottom prices- Asia City across the street is where you want to go to spend extra money for slightly more authentic food and dim sum, but China Chef is definitely a step up from other Chinese take out places.

This place is just the best. Quality food, excellent service. I have nothing to complain about. I miss it greatly now that I don't live in the area anymore.

I've been coming to China Chef pretty much since it opened and it is a great value for what you you get. $4.29 for a lunch combo= 2 meals for me. Fresh, hot and fast without being overly greasy. I've brought my kids here when tey were little and they loved it. I'll keep coming here time and time again because of the great value!!

This strip mall, formica tabled joint, serving food in styrofoam plates and bowls .. rocks. I just moved from living in Manhattan for 12 years and travel here for their authentic beef noodle soup. It brings me back to Eldridge Street.

China Chef is a fine establishment. Best orange chicken around! Don't forget the veggie fried rice:-)

We've been coming here since China Chef opened in 1995 or so. Their service and food cannot be beat! Unlike another reviewer, I do see the Mexican cooks back there (they have always had them) but indeed, they are all smiles and I LOVE them. They are great cooks. ¡Viva los compadres! Favorites are Cashew Chicken combo with steamed rice (and ask to make it spicy!), Rainbow Chicken combo with steamed rice, Sweet and Sour Chicken (an occasional fried treat), actually any of their chicken dishes. Their beef items are also very tasty. I think you could try anything on the menu and be perfectly happy. They have always used fresh, unfrozen ingredients and homemade eggrolls. Their homemade sauces are amazing and impossible to duplicate at home. So why bother? The prices have always been lower than other chinese places but I do wish they would add brown rice like a couple of other places nearby.

  • Nancy S.

Not sure why the reviews are so high. I just ate there, got a glass of water which had a film on it, which was definitely not appetizing. Fried rice was brown, dry, had no seasoning, chicken, veggies, or ANYTHING. Cashew chicken was good but didn't make up for the rest of the meal being very disappointing.

Hot, tasty, fresh, and fast---what more can a famished yelper ask for? Nine bucks gets two lunch specials, a clean place to enjoy, and a room with a view...of their competitor across the street: Asia City where one person eats warm not piping hot food for the same price. Ok the food: I had the lunch special, orange chicken. Really tasty well cooked dark meat rested on a lake of spicy orange sauce. A mountain of rice and a crispy well fried egg roll covered the rest of the plate. Loved it! My lunch date enjoyed the hunan tofu lunch special. A mound of perfectly cut and cooked crisp vegetables and tofu triangles swam in a luscious dark salty and spicy sauce. You order at the counter then within five minutes the food appears. Dig in with either sticks or western tableware. Mustard, duck and soy stand on the table awaiting yiur squeezes. For the price, taste and ease of parking this new find will find me emptying my wallet here as a smile crosses my face as I fill up!

Not being from the area I had my eye out for a good Chinese restaurant with reasonable prices. I settled on China Chef because of other positive reviews and was not disappointed. The building, although small feels homie and cheery, the man was nice who took my order (presumed to be the owner) and my food came out quickly and was obviously fresh not to mention I was stuffed for less than $5 out of the door.

I would have to say that China Chef serves the best Chinese food in Ypsilanti. Came here today to get General Tso Chicken combination plate with chicken fried rice. I one thing i love is the fact that they made both the chicken and rice spicer for us, which took a good meal to a great meal. Everything is great and the dinner plates are big enough to share. i personally am not a Chinese food fan but whenever i need some, from here on out it will be China Chef that i will go to.

China Chef has been my go-to Chinese place since 2003 when I first moved to Ypsi and a buddy brought me there. It's cheaper then a McDonald's combo meal for their lunch special and it always is on point. They have the food ready in 5 minutes you don't even have to leave a name or anything when you call in. Don't think about bringing anybody for a date...everything there is decades old. It's definitely an Ypsi dive, sort of like the Pea Pod but actually tasty.

The last time I had this good chinese food for this price was 6 years ago in Mount Pleasant. Great flavors, perfect amount of spice, they cook it fresh on order, it is good Chinese food!

Oh to add i also know the owners and i used to had a crush on their daughter lol!!we still cool though. But great place and the owners are great people the always smiling. Love it!

Ironically, I come here after the gym to pick up lunch. Well worth the calories I spent burning off on the elliptical though. And $4.29 lunch specials til 3:30, 7 days a week? Um, Calling all students! This place isn't much for ambiance, but if you look around at the families, couples, and singles eating their sweet and sour chicken and fried rice with egg roll for under $5 per person, they look pretty dang happy to me.

I honestly do not understand all the positive reviews on this place. I moved to Michigan from California, where there is a lot of great culturally-diverse food, and I would like to say that I've had my fair share of Chinese Food. I had been craving Chinese food since I moved out here, and decided to try this place out since it was near the Secretary of State Office. My boyfriend had the General Tso's Lunch Special and I had the Mandarin Chicken Lunch Special. We should have been wary by how cheap the food was, but we did not think anything of it at the time. Firstly, the woman working the register got our order mixed up twice, and gave us another table's food. Mind you, there was only two other tables dining while we were, and they only had 3 people each... Once we finally received our food, it looked very half-assed. My chicken was dry on one side and drenched in a neon pink sauce on the other side, while the friend rice literally just looked like white rice with some soy sauce thrown in. The chicken was not appetizing in the least, it had too-thick of a breading and the sauce was just atrocious. I took maybe 3 bites of it and tossed my plate to the side. BOTTOM LINE: If you are from California, or anywhere with real Chinese food, I definitely do not recommend this place, the waitress was scatterbrained and the food is definitely not worth the cheap price. My hunt for good Chinese food continues.

Short on funds, then go here and get something to eat! I think their lunch is still $3.98... I used to go there twice a week when I worked at EMU. They used to know my order, but I don't go there anymore since I live on west side of Ann Arbor. Try their curry chicken. They cook the chicken in hot water before they stir fry it... it also has lot of oil, so you need to watch out. I also like their general tsou, but if you are watching your figure, stay away from battered and deep fried food! Even if they are good!! They used to serve salad when you dined at the restaurant, but not sure if they still do that. If you are low on funds and want Chinese food, then go here! Leave your expectations at the door - go without any, order food and enjoy.

This is good cheap-Chinese food. If you're looking for authentic or high class, go somewhere else. If you just want a good stir fry, fried rice, or orange chicken, you're in luck. My go-to in the Ypsi area for American style Chinese.

When a person reviews a restaurant, you should try to know something about the business, the food, & above all compare apples with apples. You are not going to get gourmet cooking of any kind in the Ann Arbor area for under $80 a person and you can't expect to get designer restaurant architecture or interior design from what is clearly a traditional neighborhood style Chinese eatery. I've eaten tasty, fresh Chinese food in large tents & old buses. This small place uses fresh hand cut vegetables and fresh hand cut meat. Nothing is frozen or box food like the many small western eateries in the area that charge considerably more. China Chef is clean and the tables & chairs inside serve the regulars fine. The food is not cheap. The prices are very competitive. Lunch specials are $4.49 each and the owner does not cut corners. The tofu dish is excellent and it is a vegetarian dish. The cooks do not use lard or any animal fat and they do not pile on the MSG as do many other more expensive Chinese restaurants in the Chinese food intensive part of the greater Ann Arbor area. There are no spoiled arrogant young female (products of the one child policy) university student wait staff to tip but customers do not wait in line. The order taker brings the food & beverages to the table. The owner is very pleasant and hard working. His menu is rather extensive for the size of the establishment. The food is excellent home style type & the Owner does not rely on a kitchen full of unhappy illegals like the two inexpensive buffets nearby. I say inexpensive as less than $8 for the layout of these buffets is incredible if you know something about Chinese food. It is very labor intensive. I would eat the much healthier meals at China Chef any day than the more expensive heart stopping, out of a box fare at the western style places that all all over Washtenaw Ave. Parking is ample and easy. I would avoid the temptation to park in front of Huckleberry Party store, unless your car is a clunker. Cars stagger in and out of Huckleberry spaces every few minutes.

I don't know why but my girlfriend and I call this place CHINA WORLD. It must have something to do with the fact the portions here are PLANETARY. I have never ordered anything but the "small" portion (labeled on the menu as "pint"), and have never actually finished my meal, and I am member of the Clean Plate Club so this is kind of a big deal. DId I mention that it's dirt cheap too? Of course we all know that quantity ain't the only thing. So lemme tell you, that flavors are CHILL. 3.5 stars for flavor. It's delicious but my mind isn't being blown here. Nothing bordering the avant-garde, everything standard and stand-by. This is real talk. Someone mentioned problems with meat in veg meals, which is a total bummer but has never happened to me. As a matter of fact, I regularly asked to substitute fried tofu for the fried chicken in the General Chicken and never ran into a problem. Also the veggie szechuan is yowza good (as i assume the meat szechuan is as well). OH DANG it's been too long i'm gonna have to go get some of those delicious noodles and sauces. Musing on service....Like i said, they had no problems subbing to satisfy vegetarian persuasion. It's been a while, so I'm having trouble thinking of any real rude dudes, but I'm not gonna say it never happened. If it did I mostly likely forgave them because they are cheap and delicious and I have trouble caring about service for whole-in-the-wall Chinese deals. Your mileage may vary. The bathroom in this place is awesome too. A long-time fave.

'Til the day I die, I will never understand why so many Chinese restaurants are stingy on the veg in meat dishes. I mean yeah, if I order something called "Kung Pao Beef", I definitely expect there to be a good quantity of beef, but if the menu says there are also vegetables in the dish, I expect a proportionate amount of those too. China Chef was a happy surprise in that department- when I opened my takeout container, I found lots of beef, water chestnuts, green peppers and (lo and behold) ZUCCHINI! This was my first visit and this alone was enough to entice me to try them again. But wait... there's more! Their daily lunch special is a mere $4.29, which includes fried rice (though you can sub white for fried) and an egg roll. Even though I found the egg roll to have an odd texture to it, for $4.55 (my total with tax) I can certainly overlook it. Hooray for new discoveries!

For the price, they cant be beat, especially their lunch specials. And their portions are HUGE! I recommend their chicken dishes...emperor's, orange, and generals.

  • Sarah R.

China Chef is nothing spectacular, but they're reasonable option for take-out. They do have seating inside the store, but it's pretty stripped down an bare, and the restaurant is in a strip mall. You'd do best to call ahead and get take-out. The main reason to go with China Chef over other local restaurants is price. You get quite a bit of food on the cheap. It's also right next door to Huckleberry, one of my favorite liquor stores, so you can pick up some beer or wine to go with your takeout pretty easily. One negative: One of the last times I ordered here, I got a tofu dish to split with a vegetarian friend. I'd had it here a couple times and knew it was supposed to be a vegetarian dish. To my vegetarian friend's dismay, when we got it home, there was pork mixed in with the tofu. If you're a vegetarian, you may have to be really explicit when you order to avoid a similar debacle.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
