Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I was a little hesitant in trying this place. There are a lot of options for Mexican food around. There were enough bad reviews to make one wary. I can tell you I was not disappointed at all with my dinner tonight. To start chips and salsa were brought to the table immediately. Chips were good salsa was milder than most. My wife, who usually prefers the mild because the hot is too spicy, preferred the hot. We ordered a order of the chicharrones and they were perfect. There was also El Tapatio anEl Yucatan hot sauces on the table. Any place that offers Tapatio is ok with me. The tequila selection will please all. The only issue is if you have a preference for premium margaritas you will not see them the menu. We prefer El Presidente margaritas we told the bartender what we wanted and he made the perfectly. Wy wife had the shrimp fajitas and she loved them. I had the El pastor meat tacos. The tacos are served the way I prefer. They are on corn tortillas served with cilantro and onions. I was truly satisfied with my dinner and look forward to returning,

This place was great !! We sat at the bar and had great service from the bartender .. We ordered the three meat fajitas ( chicken shrimp steak ) a Corona margarita and a Long Island iced tea .. I was soooo happy they do not use any well liquors for think drinks .. So no headaches for me =] ! I really enjoyed the food .. The restaurant including the restrooms are very clean and we definitely will be back next time we're in town !

The chips and salsa were standard. One of my major issues was that the menu was like 8 pages long but they only offer like 12 things. That's like an average of 1.5 items per page. Seems silly. So I ordered a chicken fajita with cheese. My fajita was smaller than most places offer. The cheese melted on top was cheap and average compared to the higher quality cheese many other places (ANGELINA'S) offer. To me that is an important element. My dad ordered a steak and shrimp dish and felt like it was too spicy and nothing on the menu led him to expect that. The exact description was "Steak and sauteed shrimps served with pico de gallo, guacamole, refried beans and rice." The waiter barely spoke English and didn't offer much help on it. My dad just wondered if there was a way to modify it next time he came to this place so that it wasn't so spicy. The waiter shrugged and said "That's how it comes." I dunno, didn't seem helpful at all. Oddly enough I think there was more variety on the kid's menu than the rest of it... but my son is picky about Mexican food so I went with the chicken nuggets and fries. I realize that's not the best choice at a Mexican food place but uh, they were rock hard and overcooked. Blech. I won't go back there. Just about any Mexican food place in the area is better than this place.

No matter what anyone says and as Gwen would say this place is Hella good...Man oh man! I had high hopes for this place and they delivered! The decor cute: I like it and big, great for groups. Spot on, The food however is the rockstar! A downriver delightfully delicious gem. I really enjoyed myself always on the look out for some good mexican cuisine and this place has got it going on. I had enchiladas verde excellente! Beans, rice all good, nice balance. Shrimp cocktail oh my fabulous tons of shrimp, cilantro, avocado one of the best ever. I think my date wanted some shrimp he was doing some serious eye balling but I didnt share... My date had the wet burrito he didn't love the ranchero sauce. I tried it. I Thought it was real good slighly creamy it did have some pepper and chunks which bothers him but I think he's whacked... he ate it allll.. said was good the meat al pastor very good. The salsa was a bit on the non spicy side my only critique but still good just needs some spice. There is however tapatio on each table to spice things up and as another reviewer pointed out a true tale sign that your in legit mexican nirvana. Service really great our server Jennifer, did a fine job. Ohhh yeah my margarita strong and priced nice had me feeling hella good... I shall return No doubt!

This place was great. Homemade salsa. Food tastes fresh. Atmosphere was nice. Only thing I didn't like was the service was very slow. Other than that, the shrimp fijitas were great!!

New Mexican restaurant in town, so good! Very authentic. Nice atmosphere. Warm chips, fajitas were delicious! Ordered Horchata, a wonderful cinnamon non-alcoholic drink you gotta try. It's like a cold iced chai tea but not as milky, loved it. Warm friendly service. Will go back again very soon.
(5)Ella B.
Absolutely love this place! Been searching for a good Mexican place since moving down here from the west coast and this place surpasses my expectations! Tried several items on the menu so far and they were all full of flavor! Hubby and I, will definitely continue to dine at this place!

Holding a few stars back just because they've messed up our order the first 2 times we've ordered carry out from there , the food was very good just the wrong order gonna try this one more time tonight if they screw it up again I'm done ...if it's right it rerate my review

Came a 3rd time with my daughter because I wanted another awesome margherita and she wanted to try the food. Food seemed much better. I got the tostadas and she had the quesadilla's. Both dinners were good and hot this time. So we will continue to go. Great service here always. Ok now went again tonight, this is the second time the same male in a white shirt(was not our server) came to drop back off our credit card and receipt, and stood there waiting for me to fill it out. I think that is completely rude and rushing a person! Second time the same guy there has done this!

My boyfriend and I decided to give this new restaurant a try... the decor was super cute, the staff was very friendly but the food was lacking a bit. It was good enough but I expected more. This restaurant would be perfect for people who have sensitive taste buds and don't like a lot of seasoning in their Mexican food.

Love the atmosphere, the food, and the service. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is definitely not as Americanized as a lot of the Mexican restaurants nearby. The rice seems to be made in house and it has a lovely texture. Like other reviews said the salsa is severely lacking. Couldn't tell which one was hot and which was mild, and it was very runny. The guacamole's price is listed as "market price," which leads me to think it's store bought. Still good though. Our waitress was so thoughtful and kind. She really went above and beyond for our table. The restaurant was very clean, and we got our food very quickly, and it was fresh and warm. Delicious too. Only complaint is the salsa, but otherwise a great experience.

This is a newer Mexican restaurant in Downriver, not many Mexican restaurants here. They do have some flaws, nothing really to mention here. We met the owner on Cinco de Mayo and he was very nice and actually took his time to talk to us and listened. Not nany owners will do that. He even stayed with us and served us a variety of Mexican beers , Victoria was my fav. His very friendly staff provided us with necklaces and noise makers, so after getting our BUZZ on, we came back later in the evening with our family. They had an incredible atmosphere with a Mexican hat dance, dancers and a mariachi band, our kids loved it. They food was good, I had the big Botana and it was very fresh, the wife had the fajitas and she approved of them. The spicy chicken is different and authentic tasting. We just wish they had bigger portions that we have encountered at other places. We will go again.
(4)Lisa W.
I really enjoyed the food here. The guacamole is fresh and I like their recipe. The Salsa has to much thyme or oregano (not sure) going on in it which gives it an Italian marinara flair I didn't care for that and the hot needs to be hotter more jalapeno. The service was good. the fajitas were yummy. I also liked the combination plate with beef, you only get one choice of meat on the combo. I am most definitely coming back to try other option's.
(4)Nicole M.
Basically this entire restaurant can be summed up by the word standard. The food was okay but a little on the greasy side. Both my boyfriend's and my own plate were covered in grease when we were done eating. That being said the waitstaff was friendly and the food came out quickly. If you are just looking for a quick place to grab a bite this is not a bad choice. If you are looking for great Mexican food and a cool vibe I would keep looking.
(2)Joseph B.
They have only been open 4 days. Food was excellent! They are working out their processes and I'm sure this will be one of my favorite places!
(4)Doug Z.
I like the food, the staff is great, I really liked this place the couple times I have gone...
(4)Ryan M.
Just ate here for the first time. Far from impressed. Service was very slow and there were only 3 tables sat in the whole place. The chips in salsa were pretty good. When the food got to the table it was barely warm, to almost cold. Really should have just listened to my daughter and went to Taco Bell . Will never eat here again .
(2)Kayla S.
Delicious food and nice atmosphere. Don't let the salsa deter you. Both times I've been so far, the service has been great. The meat is really well seasoned and tastes wonderful. Definitely one of the top Mexican places in the area.
(5)Cynthia S.
Sounds like the owner should get the hint (s) and change the salsa. If it were my restaurant and this many people were complaining about it.... well, isn't it obvious what your next step should be ????
(1)Andrea T.
This restaurant hasn't been open very long. We waited about a half hour for our seat and once we got seated it was spot on serving. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was outstanding. Will definitely be back!!
(5)Mike D.
We watched from our apartment the place was being worked on and every day we waited for it to be done. Well our wait has ended the food and staff excellent. Only thing I would want is a little more constanticity in the food. First time I had the garlic shrimp a lot of garlic bits, then a week later almost none. Fijita needs more seasoning. But over all a very enjoyable meals.
(5)Scott S.
I would not recommend this place, been sitting here for am hour now. First, we gave our name and waited in line. Why there was a line I have no idea, there where at least 7 empty tables. Then hot seated and waited almost 45 min for our food. The "mild" salsa tasted like water and ketchup. The "hot" sauce tasted like tomato and salt.
(1)Rikki W.
This review is based solely on the food as I have only ordered take-out here. I've gone here about 4 times since they've opened at the new location. The food has always been just ok. However, last night my steak fajitas were terrible. They tasted rubbery and like they had been frozen and reheated. This place never gives any chips and salsa which is pretty standard with mexican fare for take-out as well. My husband's chicken taco dinner was not very well portioned, very little chicken and they only gave us 1 small salsa for 2 dinners. Also, really no flavor. Just boring. The best mexican downriver is Taco Especial in Ecorse, so even though that's a little further from me, that's where I'll be headed from now on.
(2)Rick R.
Had the 2 meat combo fajitas and they were excellent, nice atmosphere, excellent staff, very friendly. Large selection of Mexican food and reasonable prices. Definitely worth a try, I'll be visiting this place often
(5)Ashley V.
Not very high quality food and it was cold. Service was great though! They just need to work on the food, could be a great little place!
(2)Grace W.
Been here a couple times so far and haven't really been overly impressed with my visits. Food is ok/good. Service is ok/good. The time it takes to get your food is about average. I can't agree with other reviews in terms of food temp though. So far I haven't received a meal that was cold. I would just say that the whole experience is just kind of average or mediocre. Nothing has really stood out or wowed me. They do have Horchata though which is a pretty big selling point to me. First visit I came here with my husband. I ordered Chicken Tostadas. The tostadas and chicken were good, but the beans and rice were pretty average. I honestly don't really remember either so that should say something. The chips are good. Salsas? They're kind of lacking. The mild salsa has a decent/pretty good flavor, but it's just so runny. Salsa should have some kind of thickness to it so it stays on your chip, and doesn't drip/pour off during the trip from the bowl to your mouth. I understand there will be some casualties, but this is beyond that. Second visit I came with my Dad. Our waitress was nice, but she was a little absentminded at times. The hostess asked us how many and got the menus out. Our waitress just walked away to show us our table and never grabbed the menus. I ended up grabbing the menus from the hostess before walking away since our waitress forgot. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Same issue with the salsa as first visit, but this time I added the hot to it too thicken it up a little. Didn't make much of a difference. My Dad ordered some kind of a combination plate. He said the food was "Ok." I got the Botana this time. Said it came with chorizo and beans, but the waitress asked if I wanted meat. When I pointed that out, she said that the beans were just kind of mixed with the chorizo. Well when the botana came out it seemed like maybe the beans were just refried with the chorizo grease instead, since they had an orangish tint to them and I didn't see any little bits of chorizo anywhere in the beans or botana. Also - DON'T get the large unless you plan on splitting it with 3-4 people. The waitress never said anything to me about the size of it so I had no idea. I knew something was up when she brought 2 small plates to the table, but it was too late by then since our food came out about 5-10 min later. When she brought it out my Dad and I were just like 'Wow!" I told her I had no idea it was that big, and she said she just figured we were both going to share it. Well, that would make sense if he didn't order a combination plate but he did. I only ended up eating about 1/4 of it and took the rest home for my husband. It filled up the entire carryout box! Yum...soggy nachos. They seem to get quite a bit of business - kudos to them - but I don't know if we'd be back. I'd rather go to Angelina's or try out some place different.

On a recommendation from a friend, my husband and I ate lunch here June 5th. First of all, I want to say my husband, being Mexican, is really picky about Mexican food. So we sat down feeling a little skeptical. The decor is what is usually found in Mexican restaurants, so no suprise there. The menu is huge, and seemingly leaves out nothing that most people would want. After taking about 10 minutes to look it over, we chose a number of items. My husband got a burrito dinner with ground beef and pico de gallo and some other add-ons. I ordered the Fatias with Steak, pico de gallo and cheese. We also each ordered a tostada and a taco with add-ons. Each meal comes with rice and refried beans. The tortilla chips bought to us were fresh and homemade. We received two small bowls of salsa--mild--which we don't eat--and hot. The hot salsa, however, was not hot enough for US....we eat hot sauce at home ALL the time, so we're used to it. I was disappointed in the size of the bowls of salsa. Not because there wasn't enough, salsa, but because the bowls were too small for us to dip some of our large tortilla chips into. This meant we had to break apart the chips, making a mess on our table. The bowls need to be a little larger, but whether that will ever be changed, who knows. Our food came, and we realized we ordered too much food. My husband was surprised, but pleasantly so, that the add-ons were on separate plates. It caused quite a jam on our table to fit all the plates. At other Mexican restaurants, the cheese, etc., is on the same plate as the food, or in the food. Not so here, and my husband explained to me that separate plates is the correct way to serve and it is done this way in a Mexican home. On to the food...My husband's burrito was large and he said it tasted very good. He was pleased with it. Our refried beans were very good and the rice was fluffy and not sticky, but it was BLAND. We added some of our hot salsa to it, and we ate it but really, the rice should have something in it to spice it up from the kitchen, we tasted nothing. My Steak Fatijas were good. I was a bit unhappy with some of the steak, it was tough and stringy. But, there were some steak strips that were tender, so I give this a pass. The steak was flavorful, no complaints with that. I found that I didn't (for some reason) like the corn tortillas I got with the meal, but found that to be strange that I didn't--considering that the tortilla chips we ate with our salsa were also corn and they were fine. But, I couldn't stomach these corn tortillas with my Steak, so I ended up eating the steak and cheese and my other toppings without the tortillas. Still filling..I just couldn't eat the meal as wrapped in a tortilla. Our tostadas were very good...again they were corn tortillas and in this case, my tostada didn't taste weird, so I don't know what was going on. The taco I had was ground beef. The beef was not seasoned the way I like it, so I'm not sure if I will order it again. My husband had pork in his taco and he said he loved it. I realize I didn't mention service. The service was very good, our waitress was Jennifer and she was very attentive and thorough. We will visit again and order other items (less food!) and see how we like it. My husband rated this restaurant a B. I give it a B-

This place is glorious. They made me something that was not on the menu very quickly. If this place was a church I would pray in it, and become one with it, body and soul.

Tried this place out over the weekend with my husband and another couple. We arrived just before 6:00 Saturday evening and were promptly seated. Our waitress greeted us and told us of a couple specials....we ordered 3 alcoholic drinks and 1 soda. She brought us glasses of water, but the drinks seemed to take forever to be served. When they finally did come they had to be served by another waiter, presumably because she was too young to serve. Anyhow, my husband and our friend had classic margaritas on the rocks which they said were very good, and I had an excellent mojito. Our friend who ordered the soda didn't receive his drink and we actually had to ask for it about 10 minutes later. The chips were good but under-seasoned (no salt?), however the salsa was a real disappointment. It was difficult to tell the difference between the hot & mild (we were never told which was which) and they seemed to have an overabundance of herbs which gave it a distinctly Italian flavor. No cilantro? Very odd.....not really a fan. Our food was served quite quickly despite the restaurant being somewhat busy (Saturday night, after all) and looked appealing. I felt the portions were a little on the small side for the prices. My friend and I had both ordered chimichanga dinners (she had chicken, I had ground beef). My friend seemed to enjoy the shredded chicken filling in her chimichangas. I thought the beef filling was a bit on the "wet" side, more like what you'd get inside a burrito or taco. I'm used to chimichanga filling being a bit drier than what was served. Also, the menu said they came with cheese on top, which I assumed would be melted shredded cheese. Not so. The cheese was a queso-style cheese sauce. Unlike anything I had ever been served with chimichangas, but it was a surprisingly tasty addition nonetheless. The rice and beans had good flavor but were nothing special......both were pretty typical. The husbands had ordered the two-meat fajitas (chicken and beef). Both guys declared that the chicken was tasty, but the steak was rather tough and was not seasoned at all. Guacamole came on the plate with the fajita condiments, and my husband said it was VERY good. I wished we had ordered a side of it after the disappointing salsa. The atmosphere inside is really nice and I was impressed by how it looked. They clearly spent a lot of time and money remodeling the former Ponderosa restaurant, and I feel it was very well done in an open and welcoming design. Overall I can say I wasn't hugely disappointed, but I wasn't hugely impressed either. I had checked out their website prior to our visit and it mentioned their specialty drinks, but when we asked for drink menus were told they had none. Service was polite but uneven....as I stated we were greeted promptly, but drinks took a long time. Food came quickly but our waitress didn't come back to check on us until we were almost done eating. It took a long time to get our check and pay the bill as well. I can see possibly giving this place another try......I'd probably skip the salsa and order guacamole instead and probably try a different dinner to see what else they have to offer.

Did a carryout order and the lady told me 15 minutes and when I got there it was ready and hot. Ordered tacos and Enchiladas and I will say this is the "BEST" Mexican downriver. I have tried all of the ones downriver over the last ten years I have lived down here and they are okay to poor. Yes. Meat is a little spicy, but it's Mexican. Salsa could use a little help but over all I will go back.
(5)Tj S.
Food tasted fresh and was delicious. The al pastor is what I will recommend. Gets three stars because service was extremely lacking. Needed a refill for about 5 minutes while my server sat across the dining room eating. At least I think that was my server got more help from another girl walking around. Food also took a long time to come out. And all I had was 2 tacos
(3)Michelle P.
Great atmosphere, authentic food, fair prices! Fresh salsa. Thanks for the great service as well. We have been there twice and will be back soon!
(5)Kristina C.
First time going. This place is horrible. Food tasted freeze dried. No flavor. Salsa was flavorless. I will not be going back. Taco Bell blows this place out of the water. Don't waste your money.
(1)Lisa D.
My boyfriend and I decided to give this new place a try. We both really like Mexican food and are always looking for new places in the area. Staff was friendly upon being seated. Our waitress started off attentive. But it quickly went down hill. Not busy yet it took 5 minutes to get a water. No refill was ever given. The salsa was pretty good. The food was just okay. Nothing was bad but not good by any means. Melted cheese on the chimichanga was nothing more than canned nacho cheese. I expected much more based on other reviews. Just seemed like another slightly below average Mexican restaurant. There are much better places in the area.
(2)Catherine W.
The atmosphere was very nice and clean service was prompt however the food lacked the chips tasted burnt the salsa was boring and the food was flavorless. not the worst but not very good, we have other great options downriver.
(2)Lance L.
Overall my experience was very good. This Mexican restaurant is on the more authentic side then most around the area which is nice to see. I had the chicken fajitas which were excellent and the service couldn't be any more friendly and prompt. I look forward to my return to try other items on the menu.
(4)Ely P.
They added frijoles charros....AMAZING! I find it funny that a lot of the bad reviews said they should have gone to taco bell. If thats your kind of thing instead of more authentic mexican food perhaps you should go. A lot of those reviews mentioned the food was not what they're used to. Thats not really a reason for a bad review. You're used to tex mex...thats fine, but thats not really what they serve here. I agree there could.be several improvements but please dont expect them to start throwing iceberg lettuce, tomato and kraft shreadded cheese on everything just because it "Mexican"
(5)Richard O.
Group outing today; Cathy, her mother Elrene, a neighbor Anne, and me. Elrene is 92 and was not fond of Mexican food until we took her to Camino Real last week, she usually eats smaller amounts of foods. On both occasions she ate a beef taco, rice, and tres leche cake. Need I say Camino Real does not serve small portions. Anne ate a Chimichanga and for desert tree leche cake. Cathy ate burritos, and I was a pig eating posole soup and Cóctel de camarones (shrimp cocktail). The food and service was wonderful!
