Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I was in the Westland area and stumbled upon this cute deli. I walked in and the dessert case immediately caught my attention. Tiramisu- done! I figured I should probably get something substantial as well and asked for recommendations from the young ladies, who were very friendly, behind the counter. They suggested the Goomba, essentially sausage and peppers. Just the name alone, made me want to order the sandwich. Sandwich was very good, dessert perfect, and customer service excellent.

I wish they were open later in the evening, because we would probably get dinner from here multiple nights a week if it was! Sandwiches are amazing, my husband loves the desserts. They also sell whole bean Italian coffee that is delish.

Great Italian deli style sandwiches. I like the small Italian deli shop they also have great tiramisu and other Italian style dessert ready to go.

I really like Loaf and Pound for lunch. You can get in and out in less than an hour. And I love the folks who run the counter at lunch - they call me Mortadella because of my unnatural love for the stuff (at least that's why I hope they call me that...). The interior is small and basic. My favorite sandwiches are the Cosa Nostra, The Don and the Italian, all If which are kind of similar but taste different. They use fresh mozzarella balls, sliced to order. They slice their meats for each sandwich. They have a monthly sandwich special too. A couple of helpful hints: If your sandwich comes with peppers, ask for options because their spicy peppers make the sandwich for me! Their bread options include a hard roll and a soft roll. The hard one is more traditional but it's work to eat and tears up my mouth. The soft roll is my preferred choice. Take home half of your sandwich. Their sandwiches are big, and if you're not a championship eater plus you get the combo (comes with chips or a salad plus a soda) you'll likely have some leftover. It holds up well. Get more spicy peppers on the side. Their name is also a special they have daily. A loaf of pre-sliced Italian bread and a pound of lunch meat (basic ham, basic turkey and some damn fine salami). Current price for this deal is $6. Think about what you pay for a pound of lunch meat. Yeah, it's a good deal.

First time visiting on a recommendation from another. I also saw they were one of a few 5 star restaurants on YELP. Dinner hour Friday they didn't have all breads normally offered. The deli case with pre portioned salads only had cole slaw. The staff working had some trouble responding to my wife's questions. The space lacked comfort, no music or air conditioning. We both ordered the "Goodfella" sandwich without the slaw. The bread/roll was soft as advertised but I was expecting a much higher grade of meat than what we were served. Overall the place was clean but tables needed to be wiped down between guests and spot swept as well.

Goomba was a little dry, but the other offerings are great, solid bread, desserts, sandwich of the month is always good. Bring back that pulled pork sandwich with the onion straws and I'd eat here every day.

Can't believe anyone mentioned Subway in a review for this place... No comparison... Very tasty fresh Tuna Salad Sub... I will be back

This restaurant is a little piece of Italy in Westland. Not only that, but the food is guaranteed to be fresh!!! Then on top of that if you are a regular the staff will be EXTREMELY kind to you. The place is ALWAYS clean. Loaf and a Pound is DEFINITELY a step up from Subway! If you are a Foodie and want a sandwich you gotta try this place. Oh by the way they sell high end and delicious lunch meats as well

Great Italian deli. Had their Hot Italian Roast Beef sandwich. They gave a side of the au jus too. Awesome! They only offer it Tue, Thurs, and one other day. Definitely coming back to try the others. Delicious desserts on display too.

We were looking for some fresh bread and we noticed the Loaf & A Pound store. I walked in and noticed they only had 3 loaves of sliced Italian Bread and discovered they were $2.50 a piece. Looking at their wall posted menu revealed many interesting sandwich choices and a number of beverages. We weren't really hungry so we ordered a Latte and a Coffee. The Coffee had to be "freshly made" in the back of the kitchen and took a long time. It came out lukewarm and weak and was not really the highlight of our visit. In the meantime, on reviewing the other selections, we ordered a loaf of the sliced Italian Bread & a pound of Salami for $6 and a decadent looking slice of Tiramisu to go. Everything was fresh, tasty and the desert was excellent, The store was very well designed, clean and neat. The 2 staff members were very helpful and friendly. The only hiccup was the coffee and actually the manager did not charge us for the coffee for our time and inconvenience. We liked Loaf & A Pound even though the name is a little confusing. It seems to be a nicely done, start up business. I am going with 4 stars and I'll be back...

Off the chain. Make sure you try their custom butterfinger canoli for dessert. Their bread is fresh daily and every sandwich is excellent. They have a secret sandwich called "The Yousef"... I advise you to try it!!!

When I searched for bakeries in my area this place came up so we decided to check it out, as we got there we realized it was more a deli than anything. We got two subs and decided to try a piece of the tiramisu. The sandwiches were okay, nothing really special. But the tiramisu was pretty good! The people working there were nice and they made the sandwiches quickly which I appreciated. I would suggest going for the desserts but not the actual food, or maybe try something other than their sandwiches.

I'm not sure where all the pictures of the sandwiches with meat came from... I ordered the Spicy Italian and for $6.99+ tax it had two very thin layers of meat and one of cheese. Bread to meat ratio was way off. Sad to say there is more meat on a subway sandwich. Wouldn't recommend.

Excellent food and staff was very nice and helpful. I will definitely come back. The place is clean and fresh inside

Food is fresh and delicious. I can't believe that I've lived in this area for as long as I have and I've not experienced this place before now. The staff is friendly and incredibly helpful. If you like subs/sandwiches, you need to try this place.
(5)Martin W.
I just got "The Don" with a side of Italian Coleslaw and Potato Salad just wanted to try both and everything was good! I also got a Mini Cheesecake, Oreo truffles and a ricotta cannoli tried them all and they were great!

I was excited to try this place as the reviews have all been so good. When I came at about 11:45, the place was empty. As others have mentioned, this is more of a take out place than anything. There are a few tables, but not many. They have a huge selection of meats and cheeses to choose from. They also have several sandwiches listed that you can choose from. I got "The Don" which consisted of various italian meats, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and a vinagarette on the side. The sandwich was huge!! Well with the $6 I spent on it. They also have chips, salads, soups, drinks and desserts. I was dissapointed with the brownie I bought. It tasted like it came from Sysco or GFS and was pretty stale. Overall, great sandwiches, nice staff, good location! It's worth a trip!!

Subs are on point!!! Always really fresh meat and veggies. Also the dessert is amazing. Always the best thing to eat after a fresh sub.

Love this place! After finding it on Yelp, my two sons and I checked it out for lunch. We had the meatball sandwich and the hot beef with au jus - they were awesome and the bread made them even better. We took dessert home and my husband raved about the ricotta canolis. My kids loved the desserts they had that day, too, but today they could not say enough about their yummy brownies that I brought home when I stopped by for a loaf and a pound (there special with a pound of salami, turkey, or ham and a loaf of delicious bread for only six dollars). The staff are always very friendly. When I went in late one night for meats, cheese, and bread they took a special order for 5 loaves of unsliced bread which I picked up the next day - all set and ready to go. We made sandwiches for guests at lunch and everyone raved about the quality and yumminess! Can't say enough about this great find. Will continue to make the weekly trek there from Canton because it is so very worth it!

Where do I start!?The Chocolate/Vanilla Mousse was so DELICIOUS, I got take out and the employees were so helpful and nice, I got the Cosa Nostra and my mom got the Tuscan Tuna, she loved it, I also got the Loaf and a Pound, that hard salami tastes so goooood! We will definitely be back to try their array of sandwiches and those scrumptious looking desserts!

Very good place... Great tasting... and not expensive. Been a customer many, many times.

The best authentic Italian sandwiches ever. I am the first gen Italian born in the USA in my family and know good food. Cannolli's here are superb and tiramisu is also great. Yet to have a bad or even sub great meal here.
(5)Antoine H.
Great food and fresh food. I'm very particular when it comes to eating at food places and the is definitely one of the best places to eat at.
(5)Eileen A.
I like this place. It was my first time so the young lady explained how things worked. You can have them make you a sandwich or buy fresh sliced deli meats & cheese. I ordered a sandwich they made. It was good fresh and filling. I'll be back!
(5)Keith W.
So glad this place is close to me! Delicious subs that blow away the other pretend sub shops around.
(5)Gerald W.
Authentic Italian deli that offers 20+ different sandwiches, both hot and cold, along with homemade Italian desserts and baked goods, deli meats, soups, coffee, etc. Staff is very friendly and willing to answer questions. Portions are very generous and everything is made fresh. Highly recommended.

Best sandwiches ever on the best bread with the best meat and cheese! Fresh sliced meats and cheeses make Loaf and a pound the best lunch in Wayne county! They have multiple fresh bread choices, soups, drinks and chips to choose from. Never counted the sandwich choices but there has to be about 15. They also serve as a deli but the prices can be high as some of it is imported. If you have a sweet tooth then you have to try their desert selection. Tried the chocolate vanilla mouse today, I was in heaven! I live a mile away and easily eat lunch here 4 days a week. The prices are right and the food is filling. Stop in and see for yourself! You will not be disappointed.

This has to be the cleanest place in town. I wish more people would discover it cause it always seems empty except for a big plastic Italian baker sitting in the corner. Their subs are the best. You can chose from three different breads and they have a bug menu of different sandwiches. Super fresh. Get the hard crust bread,,makes the sandwich last longer. Desserts are good too! Give them a try.
(5)Dave H.
This a little jewel. Sandwiches are really great and deserts are wonderful. The staff is really friendly and helpful too. BONUS: the restaurant's name comes from their SPECIAL, a loaf of bread and a pound of fresh-sliced lunch meat (I chose turkey breast) all for just $5, tax included! Go there if you're in the neighborhood at lunch time.

Awesome. Excellent service, awesome sandwich (she even offered wheat bread, cut it in 3rds, put all toppings on the side!!!!!) Hubs & Kiddo said Canollis RULED! Got the "Loaf & A Pound" Deal- a loaf of italian bread & a pound of lunch meat for $5!!!!!!!!!!! It was hands down the best. I need to go there tomorrow!
(5)Meagen H.
Awesome staff, awesome deli meats, awesome sandwiches, awesome desert. :)

We stopped in today to try out their $5 pound of lunch meat and a loaf of fresh bread. Great deal considering most grocery stores hard salami begins at $6.99lb. The salami was great, and the bread was fresh and chewy. We were greeted by a very nice young lady who took care of us immediately. The shop was spotless. We had been here once before, but I completely forgot what we had. Even then, we were impressed. The only complaint I had then was the place was quite small. But they've fixed that already! Loaf and a Pound apparently took over the building adjacent to them and created a nice dining area. In addition to their deli, their desserts look absolutely delicious. Priced very well too. Overall, this is a very nice place. If you're in the mood for a quality sandwich, at a reasonable price, this is the place. If you're just looking to grab a pound of salami, turkey, or ham, and a loaf of fresh, tasty bread for the week for work, you can't miss here.

Amazing sandwiches! Not to mention excellent service, greeted with a smile as soon as you walk in the door. Only downside is there's not much room to dine in, if you prefer to sit inside but it is still an option to do so, just not for a family of four. Everything is FRESH, watch them cut some ingredients right in front of you! They also have the best tiramisu I've ever had! Cannoli's look very delicious as well. Definitely missing out if you don't try this place!

We were coming home from work and almost drove right past this place. It is tucked into a small strip mall on Ford Road and is easy to miss amidst the insurance agencies around it. The menu is simple, and uncomplicated, and posted on the wall behind the counter with descriptions of what is on each item. No gimmicks to confuse you. You order at the counter and your selection is prepared only after you order it just how you want it. I should mention that most of what they do here is sandwiches. Tasty, decadent and comfortable sandwiches. On this visit, I had a Friend of Ours--genoa salami, hard salami, mozzarella, Italian dressing, lettuce, tomatoe and onion on a lovely, fresh soft wheat roll. The sandwiches are made fresh to order and the ingredients were top-notch. The other side of the table had The Don--capicola, mortadella, salami and provolone on a soft, fresh white roll. His was a combo with a side of potato salad and a bottle of water. They have various sides as well as the usual bag of chips and soups. Most sandwiches can be turned into combos with either soup or sides. They also do a nice selection of espresso drinks. We tried one but not enough ground coffee was used to brew it and it was less than satisfactory. No biggie--we came for the food. Be warned--the business is set up to be more suited to take out than sit down dining, but there are three small tables if you are so inclined. We sat at the front window and just admired the selection of pastas, sauces, imported candies and frozen treats. While I was enjoying my selection from the glass dessert case (tiramisu) I was amazed at the cleanliness of the place. There was absolutely nothing on the floor and not so much as a crumb on any table. The counter staff are quick and personable. Overall, the experience was lovely and the only downside was the weak (and odd-tasting) coffee. They more than made up for it by being awesome in every other way. Your large group will not find enough space to sit here. No televisions to distract you and no music/muzak playing. It was enough to listen to the friendly chatter of the folks behind the counter as they went about their workday. Come for the sandwiches, stay for the dessert. Or, rather--call ahead and they will have your dinner waiting for you to take home and eat in front of your favorite conveyance of entertainment.

So I've been driving past this place for a while and I've always wondered about it so a couple months ago I finally remembered to take a look at their website. Being a vegetarian I don't just stop at restaurants, I want to make sure there's going to be some type of food for me to eat. I was impressed with the webpage and saw they had a vegetarian option. On my way home the next day I stopped in to take a look. The place was super clean and the staff was very friendly. I ordered my sandwich and stood there staring at the desert counter.......... This is where the trouble starts, I couldn't decide what dessert to get with my sandwich so I ended up with a handful of different desserts. Instead of eating my sandwich and one dessert I ended up eating my sandwich and about 5 desserts. The Sandwich I ordered is called The Associate it has fresh Mozzarella, Tomato, Basel, and a Balsamic dressing. When they were making my sandwich they actually went and picked fresh basil from a plant growing in the store (not every time will they do this it depends on if they have it growing right then) after washing the basil they added it to the sandwich. This sandwich is amazing the way the fresh basil tastes with fresh mozzarella, tomato, and they're awesome balsamic dressing. The sandwich is 5 stars on it's own. They offer 3 types of bread for the sandwiches soft white, crunchy white, and wheat. Over my visits I've tried all the bread and none of them have disappointed me but my favorite is the soft white. Now for the desserts. I ordered a few different items to try and my absolute favorite is the Oreo Truffle. It has the perfect amount of everything going on for a bite sized dessert. My next favorite dessert is the peanut butter cup, it's a pudding based "thing" (I don't know enough about desserts to give it a proper name sorry!) but it was just the right amount of peanut butter to chocolate ratio. Next up I ordered one of each type of cannoli's (ricotta and Bavarian cream). The Bavarian cream cannoli was delicious but in my opinion a cannoli is not a cannoli without the ricotta. Both of the cannoli's where freshly prepared for me when I ordered so both were perfect. No soggy crust or hard fillings. So The cannoli's are definitely worth the short wait to order if they're not ready in the dessert counter. The last dessert was a butterfingers truffle. Although it was well prepared, for me it just tasted too sweet. All in All the desserts were amazing. The price is great unless you go crazy with the desserts like I did.
