I feel like I am not sure about this place. I went here with a Groupon and got the 5-course meal. That included a salad, soup, pierogi, main course and dessert. While I enjoyed the soup and the dessert, I did not really care for anything else. And the 'pierogi' was made with ground meat in a puff pastry, not the typical pierogi I am used to. And while the food was not bad, I did not think it was great. However, the service was very good and friendly and I enjoyed the woman who sang and played the violin.

Mom and I drove 25 miles from Sterling Heights to try this unique restaurant. We are not Russian and they only thing we know Russian is Maks on Dancing with the Stars...then again, we don't even 'know' him. So we were looking forward to trying out a pure Russian restaurant. The restaurant is a small, sparsely decorated room. The ambiance was festive with lights swirling around the room and a lone man on stage signing to a sound track of various, presumed Russian tunes. The waitress was somewhat slow but the young men waiting to clear the table were friendly, quick and efficient. The food was very fresh and plentiful. The prices were little high at a low average of $15.00 to high average of $25.00 but I think it was OK price wise for the amount you were served and the fact that everything seemed very fresh. In addition to the delicious, fresh salad and bread the main meal was served with two moderate sized stuffed cabbage and roasted potatoes (my selected side). I love stuffed cabbage and this meal did not disappoint. There was plenty of tasty meat inside. I would have preferred more cabbage on the outside rather than one thin layer but over the stuffed cabbage was good. There was a small amount of tomato sauce on top that added to the flavor. The roasted red potatoes were plentiful and roasted to perfection, they were delicious. Our drinks were tasty and moderately priced. I had a house cabernet at $6 and mom had a Cosmopolitan at $6. Our dessert was forgettable. We were looking forward to the Napoleon cake but it was nothing but a small slice of strudel with some white cream inside. I also ordered the Russian Chocolate and received two candy bars. They were pretty good candy bars although both were dark chocolate and I really don't care for dark chocolate. Overall it was a very positive and interesting experience.

Sweet Sassy Molassy! My family and I just came back from our first meal at Fiddler and it certainly won't be the last. The service was quick and attentive, the atmosphere was very nice, and the food was fantastic. We used the groupon which included dinner for 4. There were only 3 of us so we expected the 4th meal to be a loss. Instead the waitress offered to box up our extra meal. The salad was heavy on cucumbers and tomatoes, which I normally don't enjoy but everything was so fresh and the dressing so good that I ate it all. This was my first experience with russian food. It seems like a mix of greek and polish with a few other influences. All 3 of our entries were fantastic as was the bread, soup, perigees and cake. Highly recommend.

I was raised on farmer's cheese, dill, smoked fish, caviar, borscht, brown bread and every meal seemed to have sour cream/creme fraiche as a must. I feel at home here. I must because this place is a haul and I am not a West Bloomfield type girl. I always feel far too blue collar, west sider and out of place when I am in WB but not in this particular building at least. I like appetizers best and usually just make a meal of mixing and matching them. The pelmeni and vareniki are authentic. I do wish they had a farmer's cheese variety vareniki topped with the tart cherry sauce as that is more familiar to me from my grandmother. The cherry with more cherry is a bit much. I also like the perfectly done latkes with both sour cream and applesauce, I need both and alternate bites of each. I like the blini with the red salty caviar but am spoiled by having cut my teeth on far better caviars. I do not turn my nose up at this lesser type at any rate. I just like caviar period. The cold beet borscht is by far my preference, the hot variety is merely ok but the cold is just the way to go to truly get the flavor of beet. My gran's hot was so far superior to theirs I was not impressed. The cold here, however, is closer to what I know from homemade. It's red, smooth and beautiful. The lox plate is good at lunch, I adore things like this everywhere though. The chicken kabob pita was nice the one time I sampled it. It is just too hard not to get more apps. The dinners have all just been ok. Kind of a waste of time, stick with apps. The cheese blintzes with strawberries make a lovely dessert. Indulge in some cold vodka while you are here. It of course goes well with the food. :). I of course adore it.

As someone who is one-fourth Russian, I had some exposure to the cuisine as a child. After the age of 10, however, I was deprived of the pleasure of this cuisine until I discovered The Fiddler several years ago. What a delight. Check out the strudel. What is more, they have vegetarian stuffed cabbage to die for. My omnivorous brothers and sisters rave similarly about the meat dishes. Dig the atmosphere, too (especially when there is entertainment). I feel privileged to have The Fiddler around, even 40 minutes away.

Had reservations for dinner and dancing. Was informed that I had to spend $55-$65 and order from a catering menu a week before. The food was horrible when I went in November but the dancing was worth the high menu prices. Without the dancing, what is the point of going?

Service was excellent, the food was delicious, everything was authentic and fresh, however it was expensive. I went there with my girlfriend with a Groupon, which helped me seriously save some cash. The ambience was great-helped with the romance thanks to the guy playing the keyboard and the acordion. We had a five course meal with bread, salad, borscht, choice of entree, and dessert. I had the lamb chops with rice and she had the flattened chicken with roasted potatoes. The pear soft drink was refreshing. The two lamb chops were tiny-flattened chicken is definitely the way to go.

On a whim, a friend and I went on an Eastern European food crawl recently. We had a late lunch at Polonia (see my new review) and dinner at Fiddler. While I do have some background with Polish food from my Cheddar-head days, I have still no other frame of reference when it comes to Russian/Ukrainian food. All I can say is Fiddler is A-OK. This last visit, I decided on the liver pate as an appetizer and the smoked eel for the entree. I gotta give them props for having the cajones to serve eel. Yes, yes... I know its a common thing at sushi bars but I challenge you to find a place serving a whole filleted eel (sans head of course because its the nailing point during the filleting process). Liver pate was quite nice though in retrospect, I still like the blini with caviar better. As far as the eel is concerned... it was tender, smoked perfectly, and delicious. It also tasted exactly like the Japanese smoked eel. If I had ordered rice, it quite literally would be unagidon. If I had the vinegared rice and nori, it could have been unagi makizushi. It certainly caught me off-guard. I was expecting something more along the lines of smoked sable fish. I'm not saying the smoked eel was bad at all, it was quite excellent, but I can't help but wonder if this is how it's served in Russia. Yet again I am thinking I need to get to Russia/Ukraine to try the real stuff. Just gotta find the time.

So, yeah. I work with some people from the former Soviet Union. What's funny to me is that when I walked in the The Fiddler, I saw a guy who looks just like one of the guys at work except for the fact that this guy behind the bar looked like a fat version of my co-worker. I actually texted a friend from work, "I'm at The Fiddler eating Russian food. The guy behind the bar looks like a fat [name omitted to protect the innocent]!" My friend responded, "Too funny!" There was something about seeing my co-worker's look-alike that was comforting. It made a heck of a lot of sense. Now, I have been to The Fiddler before. I enjoyed it then. I enjoyed it again last night. I started off with some borscht. Now, I'm not the most experienced guy when it comes to eating Russian food, but I really liked the borscht served here at The Fiddler. It was every bit the comforting soup that I needed at that point--just the thing to steel yourself against the cold. I suppose that makes sense. I mean, it sure looks like it gets cold in Mother Russia. I think I might have overdone the sour cream in my soup, because I had nothing left for my red caviar and blinis. I opted for the 6-blini version rather than the 12-blini version of the red caviar and blinis. I'm a pretty big fan of roe, but unfortunately, I know that I've not had the really good stuff yet. I think I'm going to have to hit that on a trip I hope to take to St. Petersburg sometime. Anyway, I enjoyed it immensely. One can only imagine what will happen when I have the good stuff. I ordered the lamb chops. I opted for three instead of five, because I ate a boatload of food for lunch. These lamb chops were decently tasty. I can't say they were particularly great, however. They were a bit dry and overdone. I've had better. If I recall them correctly, I think I prefer the lamb chops at Allegro, but it's been a while. I bookended the meal with shots of Stolichnaya, a very old friend with whom I haven't hung for a very long time. It was good to see my old friend. He brought some buddies along, a piece of rye bread and some little pickles. Those were the perfect compliment to the Stoli. I followed the whole ritual of smelling the bread, a "na zdorovye," doing the shot, smelling the bread, etc. just for the fun of it. You know, it really works. It makes the vodka better, I think. The bread and the pickles really are complimentary to the vodka. I even said that I can't really imagine doing another vodka shot without them. It's just too good to do it with them.

Just ate at The Fiddler this weekend and it was amazing! It wasn't very busy but had a good atmosphere and live music. I had the lamb chops which were absolutely delicious and my girlfriend has the pelmeni and those were great as well. The caviar was great and don't leave without taking a shot of Stoli the Russian way! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful as well. I was extremely pleased with all the food I had that night.

I have been to Fiddler several times. First time, I was on project in Detroit and my colleague invited me to his 30th birthday party. It was 40 or 50 of us, we rented Fiddler just like a banquet hall and we really had the best time. Apparently, Fiddler offers customized family style package, and it is truly a unique experience. Our package was around $50 per person and it included what seemed like endless amounts of food (i can recall that we chose at least 5 appetizers - pirogues, crapes with caviar, meat platter, Russian style salads, and several entrees - we had lamb chops and shish kebab). Everything was really good, but the lamb chops were AMAZING! They had live band that night which made it even more fun. And the other time I was visiting a friend in Michigan and I told him that he must try those lamb chops. So we went to Fiddler and they happened to have live Jazz that night, what a pleasant surprise. Next time i am in Michigan we are definitely going back.

My wife (who is from Ukraine) and found this place while in town on business. I've never eaten Russian food aside from a few dishes my wife has prepared but nothing too fancy. I found the food to be quite delicious and the atmosphere comfortable. I had the cabbage rolls which made my tastebuds rejoice. My wife had the salmon which she described as "pretty good." for dessert napaleon (sp?) a homemade cake of sorts. It also was delicious. From start to finish our experience was fantastic and we'll be dining there again before we leave town!

The Fiddler is located in the heart of West Bloomfield on Orchard Lake Road just south of Maple. They specialize in Eastern European, Russian, Ukraine cuisine and, of course, alcohol! I've been here on many occasions from dinner, brunch, weddings, bridal showers and holiday dinners. My family often chooses to celebrate an event here because of the friendly proprietors and great service. Fiona and her husband, the owners, never fail to make you feel welcome and make sure you are taken care of whenever you visit. I would suggest trying them out for a Sunday brunch, especially if its a special occasion such as Mother's day. Every Saturday night (I think) they put on a Russian 'club' night with live music and special courses prepared just for that evening. They try to emulate the Russian 'clubs' that are so huge in Brooklyn and Miami but kind of fall short do to lack of space and I feel, the smaller Russian, Ukrainian, Former USSR community that is so abundant in other cities (such as New York). I recommend the Borscht, its amazing here. I also love the latkes (potato pancakes), chicken tabaka (sp?) and smoked fish. Oh and don't forget the vodka!

My family visited Fiddler on a Friday evening - there was a plate of cut Challah near the bar, an amazing site to see! I went here with my Jewish family when I was younger, and I was blown away this time by our visit - this is a really, really great place to eat dinner on Friday or any night. My family and I ordered the borscht and chicken noodle soup - the borscht, was excellent. The Challah was excellent. We had the stuffed cabbage app. - it was good. For the main course I ordered a garlic-sauteed chicken, my parents liver and beef brisket. Both were very good - the side dishes of mashed potatoes were amazing. Like former reviewers said, this place has mucho character. It is expensive but I believe it is economical and a great place to eat a meal!

It is only worth going to the Fiddler on a Friday or Saturday night, when there is good dancing music. Go with someone who speaks Russian, otherwise you might have a hard time getting in the "Russian" room with the music, and be stuck with the geriatrics in the main dining room. The food is ok, but quite overpriced for Russian food of this quality - better food is at Allegra, down Orchard Lake. The music, from disco to tango and traditional Russian music, makes the night. I have many hazy memories of drunken tangos. Khorosho.

any restaurant whose menu cover page is an instructional: "how to drink vodka" (ice cold 2 oz., cheers, and drink in one drink. repeat in 15-10 minutes) wins some cool points and a few stars in my book. the food itself was pretty tasty, although i must admit that i am not an expert on "russian ukranian jewish" cuisine. i started off with the borscht (yum, i love beets!). my dining companions had the mushroom barley soup which is also excellent. i think the soup might have been my favorite part--they were both truly phenomenal. we then shared some meat dumplings. they were like a cross between a pierogi and a wonton. it was tasty in that fusiony way. and they were served with sour cream and soy sauce =) i was all worked up for a yummy main course. however i was disappointed with my selection. i hate when i get the sucky meal. i had the beef stroganoff that was made with too many sweet onions in the gravy so the gravy was too rich and very sweet from the onion overkill. the short ribs though were AMAZING! the meat and potato knishes- pretty good. and the rolled veal thing was too rich for me, but they all liked it. the food is very heavy and my tummy almost had a cardiac arrest, but it was good. if i ever go back i might just get a huge bowl of soup and some fusion wonton/pierogis. oh and p.s. in typical michigan fashion the portions were HUGE!!! a dinner could easily feed 2 people if not more. seriously. update: in retrospect i really think that the entrees are too rich and i couldn't even eat my leftovers (which is strange, i LOVE leftovers). so i had to bump down to 3***. but go for soup, seriously.

Russian Style Ukrainian Polish Cuisine. This place has allot of personality. If you want to do something different then this is the place to go for a very good Sunday brunch or a Saturday night out. After the meal and a shot of Vodka there is very lively dancing.

I hosted my birthday party here. Food tasted great. We especially liked the fact that we could customize our menu and it was family style. I would definitely recommend fiddler as a banquet hall if you are looking for an event venue to celebrate any special occasion. It's a unique experience - and not only includes great food and service, but also live music and a very vibrant dance floor!

The food here was delicious and the staff was very friendly! Also the ambiance was great, the had a live singer and a guy on keyboard, it really help set the environment up for a great feast. The lamb chops here were particularly fantastic!! Make sure that when you go here, you have your meal the traditional Russian style with a bottle if Vodka on the table and a shot glass for all the adults. I highly recommend this place, I will definitely be going back!!

Went there with a groupon and my boyfriend in tow. Without the groupon, our 5-course meal with one drink each (2 people) would have been $80 total. So for the price of near-free (our coup was for $69), it was great. The Fiddler had some of the best food I've ever tasted. There was nothing we didn't like. The borscht was delicious, ukrainian pierog, also great, but the best was the neopolitanka dessert at the end. I was so full from the 4-course (including lamb chops and a smashed hen), but I was loooving it and eating up the dessert. Only downside was that our waitress was a little awkward. Kind of young and probably new to waitressing. And the decorations were questionable. Everything on the floor and walls was alright, but then you got to the ceiling and ask WTF? Disco balls and brightly-colored Christmas-light balls is what it seemed like. Paintings on the wall were totally not Russian either. At least they did have a real fiddler performing (weekend nights only). So all-in-all, food = amazing, 10 stars! Atmosphere = 5 out of 10.

I went here with my girlfriend. The food was phenomenal. Their salad had a dressing that I haven't had the pleasure of tasting before, and the bread was warm and soft. We split the pickle plate (pickled cabbage, mushrooms, cucumbers, and tomatoes), the Russian herring, and the meat and cheese blini, with an amazing apple sauce. I had the Siberian pelmini with sour cream, and she had the beef stroganoff, which I had a bite of (amazing). They had Russian tv set up, followed by live music. The whole experience was amazing. I can hardly wait to go back...

It's different, it is a Russian restaurant, and they are proud of this fact. There was in fact a fiddler playing music accompanied by a karokia machine and singing occasionally. So we tried a sampler platter of russian salads and Borsch soup, and a Russian desert. The borsch soup was good and flavorful but it's still cabbage. The salads are more vinager base than anything else. This restaurant also offers a number of fish dishes, appetizers and entries, too. So the food was good, different from the normal fair, so it was a nice change of pace. I'm just not sure when I would go back and try more of the menu, which is why I'm rating it a three. The atmosphere of the place was strange. So I understand this is a family own restaurant, and they are trying their best, but it was a strange seating arrangement with individual dinners close to or near a couple of large banquets going on at the same time. Maybe the closeness would have improved with a couple shots of vodka. But if you are stuck looking for a change of place to go, this would be a place I would suggest to you. I think it's worth investigating a different culture's cuisine.

What a unique experience! The service was extremely fast and the servers were always on point in taking away our empty plates. When we came (Sunday night), there was a live musician who not only sang but also played the violin. They also cleared the middle of the restaurant so people were dancing which was super nice. A very family friendly place. With regards to the food, this is the first time I've been to a Russian restaurant and I'm definitely going to find more. We started with the summer salad, which tbh wasn't anything special. But, their house salad which comes with all the entrees was great! We also got the Borscht which I this beet soup and it tasted so good. The perogis were great as well but it didn't stand out compared to the soup and house salad. Now onto the entrees. You MUST GET THE LAMB CHOPS!! you get 4 big pieces of the perfectly cooked lamb that's very tender and juicy and filled with flavor. We also go the chicken cutlet, which was just okay. Then, the 7Layer Napoleon Cake! It was great and I highly recommend getting it. All this food I mentioned was the perfect amount for 3 people and with our Groupon ($25 for $40), our total came out to $40 ($80 without the Groupon) I would definitely recommend coming here Friday or Saturday night as those nights are guaranteed music. Tonight I think we just got lucky :)

I was excited to go to this place already, as I love Russian culture and knew I would love the cuisine as well. That being said, this still eclipsed even my high expectations. I was fortunate enough to find a groupon for the place for 40$ in food for only 25$, a huge steal for the quality of the food and service. It started with the atmosphere. Everything is lit perfectly, with soft jazz music playing and the place is extremely clean. The waiters are all Russian and ready with good recommendations to help with the difficult decision of what to get on the menu. They have a great selection of appetizers. I went with the Cheese Blintzes and they were absolutely amazing. They serve them with a fresh fruit preserve/sauce that just goes great with the hot, perfectly baked rolls of gooey goodness. Next they brought out the house salad and bread, both of which were extremely fresh. The bread was unique from most house breads and nice and firm. It went great with the Russian import beer that the waiter had recommended to me. I truly enjoyed it and will definitely be ordering the beer again. The entree of Siberian pelmenis had extremely generous portions and were cooked to absolute perfection! I had mine with beef, but chicken and lamb were also options. They are served with sour cream, which takes them to that next level. I was completely in heaven! Then came dessert. The 7 layer Napoleon cake was so flaky and held together very nicely. It wasn't nearly as sweet as I was expecting and tasted more like pie crust with just a hint of some kind of frosting-style filling. I rather enjoyed it, but if you are trying to get your sugar fix, you might want to try something else. The Russian chocolates were very interesting and not what I was expecting. It had a wide variety of chocolates, some of which had odd fillings. Others tasted like they had coffee infused with them. It varied with milk, dark and white chocolate. It was good, but not what I would consider to be far superior to American craft chocolate. The price was fair all around and the service was extremely professional. Live jazz music was being played starting at 7pm (on saturday) and it was just one guy with his laptop and keyboard. It was not too distracting and was a nice touch to an already elegant atmosphere. I can't wait to visit again and recommend you do the same!

We have only eaten here a few times over several years mainly because they are not on our side of town. We should be eating here more often because we love the food, the staff always treats us well, and they have a very different and interesting menu. I remember having a variety of Russian and Jewish entrees and thoroughly enjoying everything we have had. I particularly like their Borsht, both hot and cold are great. I'm thinking we need to make a return visit.

You're going to get an authentic meal here; no question. I think the prices are pretty fair, so go check them out. Warning, there may be a little bit of a cultural disconnect. I don't think the whole "the customer is always right" thing computes, so have thick skin.

I usually visit this place for anniversaries and birthdays but never once had the pleasure to do so for Sunday brunch. The menu is to die for, especially in this cold season. Good salad selection, not to mention entrees. Very satisfying even for the most picky eater like myself. I highly recommend their lamb chops and pelmeni. The free compot is very tasty. I would also like to commend the owners and the staff. Everyone was very professional and courteous. I am definitely back next time I'm in town!

We tried this place out for the first time last night, and enjoyed just about every minute we were there. We were part of a large group so we had the banquet-style meal. Which started off with a chopped vegetable salad, followed by soup, then there were meat-pie appetizers, then came the entrees. Platters of individual meat-loafs I guess, that's the best way I can describe them and roasted potatoes. The entree course was the highlight of the meal, the texture of the meat was so surprising, with amazing flavor, and the potatoes were roasted to perfection! Finally we were served coffee, tea, and a layered-pastry dessert, which rounded out the meal so nicely. (I should also mention that there were baskets of bread as well) We'd never been to a Russian restaurant before, so when the live music started and the lights dimmed, a few uncertain glances were exchanged. But this added a lovely authenticity to the meal, we even got in a bit of dancing. To wrap this up, we'll certainly be going back again. I would recommend this place to anyone seeking to try something new, interesting and very tasty. I highly doubt you'll be disappointed.

Don't let looks deceive you, this place has awesome food! I'll admit, that while it does look like a stereotypical chain mall restaurant, inside are some of the best recipes and flavors I've ever had. It was a wonderful experience all around and I look forward to my next visit. My only gripe is why the place was dead during what should have been a lunch/dinner rush, but I can only assume that people don't know of this wonderful little gem hidden in the rough. My mother was given a Groupon for The Fiddler which included a 4-course meal for four people. Everything from the service to the food was excellent. The Borscht was particularly sweet and flavorful. My mother and boyfriend got the lamb chops, while me and my brother got a delicious mushroom and eggplant dish for our vegetarian option which was utterly superb! I can absolutely see us returning in the future!

Wonderful food. Went for our work holiday party. We ate for hours. Just fantastic. The band was a bit loud for my taste but there was a birthday party there too so celebration was the theme. Not sure if that is the normal environment.
