They'll be overwhelmed if it's busy; so, slow service but I still give 5 stars. It's hard to find good mex while traveling (from LA); try the Molé or enchiladas (great sauces!).

This place is the epitome of HOLE IN THE WALL restaurant. Tiny. Dive. And the BEST authentic Mexican food around. I occasionally crave their food and the 30-minute drive from my house is well worth it. Others have suggested not to dine in. Why?! It might be tiny, and it might NOT be modern but it's always clean. Highly recommend their tacos on the soft corn tortillas.

No frills, food authentic and very tasty (especially the guacamole). No alcohol served. Unfortunately both of us had stomach issues after eating there. Disappointed, as would like to go back, but not going to happen.

I've been going to this place my whole life. The salsa is a cooked salsa with a lot of flavor! My all time favorite! I have fallen in love with everything I've tried. I highly recommend the chicken tacos, tortas, fajitas, and the fresh fish (garlic baked, of course)! The whole staff knows us and always makes us feel like family! They are very welcoming! This is a great place to learn some new Spanish! They sell Jaritos, a famous Mexican sodas and they're delicious, I love every flavor! I definitely recommend this place!

One of the things I miss about my hometown are the plethora of delicious Mexican food joints and taco stands, so discovering this taqueria made my day. The authenticity is unquestionable, right down to the small, brightly-colored building, and sparse decor. The food is fresh, service is friendly/attentive and patrons are resoundingly Hispanic, Latino or just lucky to have encountered the menu. The chips and salsa, served with a side of radish slices and lime wedges, are complimentary; our waitress brought them out right away. My husband ordered three flour tacos with his meat of choice--buche, lengua, and tripe--in a meal (comes with rice and beans), and I ordered al pastor and ceviche in the taco and tostada combo. Our waitress didn't hesitate over my request to substitute in the ceviche tostada (it was the day's special), letting me know it was no problem. The horchata was delicious (although the large was huge! I'll go small next time), the tacos were absolutely on par with my husband's favorite mexi-style street tacos, and the ceviche? There's no question: I will be a repeat offender. I couldn't quite give it five stars because my very first bite, a forkful of refried beans, was lukewarm-ish. Is that a thing? I pushed the thought aside, because if you're going to a downright authentic Mexican place for their refried beans your bonkers. But it was a troubling temperature for a first impression. Also, I think my standard for al pastor might be too high--though the flavor was still good, it seemed dry. Should've gone with the buche. Hopefully, I'll be able to avenge that missing fifth star in subsequent visits. Of which, there will be plenty.

Looking for authentic Mexican food, and not some bland tex-mex? Look no further this is the place to come. Best Mexican Waterford has to offer, if not SE Michigan. Affordable, authentic food that tastes amazing. Chips and salsa served before the entree comes out. There is take out that is quick and you can call ahead in order to get it too. Be aware that you cant tip via credit card, so bring some cash for tip, or just pay in cash. Parking fills up fast after 5pm as there are a bunch of construction workers that come here after work.

I just moved to Michigan and was looking for some good tacos this place has very good food and service!!! I will be back many times in the future. Check it out if you haven't !

Guacamole is outstanding! I wish they had better tortilla chips. Their Horchata is sweet & delicious.

I've been a couple of times now, and I'm willing to crown Taqueria San Jose as the best Mexican restaurant that Waterford has to offer. Their tacos are quite good, and the chorizo is decent -- though it's been overcooked both times I've had it. The chicken is heavily marinated (in a good way), though being cubed, I've been left to wonder if it's frozen chicken. Burritos side more towards homemade, which is either great or "meh", depending on your tastes. Personally, I was disappointed by the inclusion of refried beans and uninspired Mexican rice. Tostadas, on the other hand, are incredible. Luckily, people visiting for an authentic experience will be able to choose from a pretty deep selection of meats, which puts it a cut above many competitors. Pricing is okay, though you can't put a tip on your credit card, so be sure to bring a few bucks if you're eating in. All things being equal, Taqueria San Jose is "okay" or "pretty good", and much better than, say, El Patio. On the other hand, it's no Burrito King. Come here if you're already in the area, and don't want to drive very far.

My sister triple dog dared us to come here for our Taco Tuesday trend. I've driven by the place 100 times and always thought it was a little on the sketchy side. Located in an old donut shop with a lack of decor and curb appeal. The salsa was fantastic, jamaica juice was delicious, ceviche was fresh and the tacos were authentic. We watched the news in Spanish and thoroughly enjoyed our foodventure. With an app, 2 meals and drinks, our bill was only $20. I even had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Overall a fantastic find that has been in our view the whole time. I was glad to report back the legitimacy of this place!

I moved down the street from this fabulous establishment about 2 months ago. From Phoenix. The majestic land of tacos. I was not excited about my legit Mexican food prospects in this state, but little did I know... This place is quite possibly the only authentic, delicious Mexican food in town, quite possibly in the state. The girls who work there are always friendly, and the food is great. I have no complaints. Also, watching people who have clearly never had real Mexican food order is always entertaining. I usually get takeout, but eating there is nice too. Always have telenovelas or music videos on the tv, and a jukebox with all the sweet mariachis.

I wish they had better tortilla chips, but this is no reason at all to not dine here. We love eating here. The food is authentic and is not an American version of Mexican food at all. So it isn't greasy and covered in cheese. And who doesn't love a complementary bowl of radishes with the chips and salsa? I highly recommend this little place.

I'm a regular here food is always fresh. Authentic food. Hard to find a better guacamole, nice large variety. Breakfast also. And deserts are homemade and yummy affordable. Seem to have a large Hispanic folling which is what you want to see at a Mexican restaurant. The best of the best.. Servers are great to.

  • Victoria A.

Totally authentic and delish! It is a complete dive, but clean and very casual. They need to get more servers besides the one person who is doing everything. I am out in that area when I visit my sister and this is our hot spot for Mexican.

  • Desi S.

This place is as authentic Mexican as you can get. Never had anything bad. The only bad thing is if you want to pay by credit card it has to be over $10 and they don't allow you to tip. It's weird. bring cash for tips.

  • Hayes H.

We sat for 15 minutes and were not waited on. No drinks were handed out. The chips finally came but they were stale and the salsa was not good at all. There was also a crying baby and the parents would not control. We walked out, going to another restaurant.

  • Hooper M.

It's actually a bit too authentic for my tastes. The food is okay, but it lacks the pizzazz of Mexican restaurants targeted to gringos.

  • J M.

We have always gotten carry out, so I can't speak for the service or atmosphere of the restaurant, but we love the food! Really great tacos and combination dinner options. Reasonably priced. The rice and beans don't seem homemade but they're still good. The salsas are good too, especially the salsa verde.

    (4)
  • Jeremy R.

My wife and I both ordered the chicken quesadilla and they did taste okay - LOTS of cheese and several chunks of chicken. Not much flavor though. The beans and rice tasted okay, nothing over the top. They don't have a pop machine here, so they serve cans of soda, no free refills obviously. Upon sitting down, we were given chips and salsa. The chip had no flavor (and no salt) and the salsa was watery. Service is lacking here as well. Never had a checkup to see if we liked the food or to ask if we wanted another beverage during our visit.

  • Joe J.

Chips are ok, seems like they have no salt. The house salsa is ok, very thin and sweet, doesn't really taste like salsa. They have 2 other salsas a verde, and hot, both are very good. I order a Mexican sandwich it's was good, but almost seemed like it was microwaved, the bun was very soft and hot, but not in a good way. I would have to agree with the other review I seen, the wait staff is not very friendly. A few friends of waitress must have came in when I was there, she was very friendly and have them great service.

Great tacos.. authentic taste. No Hassle.. As some people mentioned, it is kinda of a dive.. but hey you can always take-out.. We tried it once and since then order to-go.. I would NOT recommend dining in.

Never judge a book by its cover. From the outside..... you tend to keep driving past it and not go in. You kind of wonder why there's hardly any cars in the parking lot. When you walk in, you definitely think...... not too fancy! But the food speaks for itself! The best kept secret in Waterford. Everything is fresh, everything is authentic, everything is made to order. So sometimes it takes a little longer to get your food, but its well worth the wait! Personally, I would rather wait a little longer knowing it is not pre-made! They are very accommodating to every customer's taste bud needs. Their portions, prices and service is excellent! One stop and you'll be back .They do catering for birthday parties graduations or any event and are very reasonable with their pricing. I had them cater a taco bar with beans and rice at a backyard party and the food was a hit. Everyone loved it! Jose and Lucy are wonderful people and take great pride and have passion in what they do. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE ONE ON DIXIE HWY!!! SAN ANTONIO TAQUERIA!

Having spent a few years in Mexico, I have spent a few years looking for good Mexican food. My son and I enjoy the steak taco with onion and cilantro. Don't forget to finish off the taco with a squeeze of lime and one of the sauces on the table. I prefer the hot red sauce.

  • Rebecca B.

Delish! Everything is fresh, the tv and patrons are all speaking spanish and the menu is in spanish. The beans are great and the rice is fresh. I can't say one bad thing other than I wish it was closer to my house :( There are not a ton of vegetarian choices, but you can make anything just with beans and the waitress offered to bring me avocado which was tasty. Go and enjoy!

I love me some tacos. And, the al pastor tacos here are my fav. My first time here I ordered 3 and then I ordered 3 more. Mexican dive joints have the best tacos. And this place is a dive. Love it.

Fantastic food and great selection. Reasonable prices. Guacamole is made to order and chips were refilled while we munched. Salsa was excellent and the people were friendly. Small diner like setting, seats approximately 30. Be prepared for authentic yumminess!

Super fresh food and the best tacos in the state for the price. Living in Tucson, AZ and Chicago, IL has given me many many tacos. The tacos at SJT rank up there with the best.

This place is worth the drive. Note that it is kind of a dive-- NOT fancy but the food and service are excellent. VERY authentic, inexpensive and the wait staff are real Mexican girls :) Oh--- and that salsa... mmmmm.

Went there today for the first time with high expectations (food-wise) per all the raving reviews here on Yelp and I was not disappointed. While this is a dive, it felt clean which is important. The bathroom was very clean as well which I always look for as if a restaurant's bathroom is filthy it leads me to worry about the cleanliness of the kitchen. So - small, run down looking from the outside, but clean on the inside. It's a smaller place, mainly carry-out with a few tables. I was pleasantly surprised with the interior of the restaurant as I expected worst from the reviews. The chips and salsa were fantastic. I really liked the salsa. Sweet with a kick. I got the taco and tostada combo (with chicken), and both were fantastic. While the server's didn't speak a lot of English the service was very good. I'll be back.

My mom and I wandered in here to take a break and grab some lunch while on a bike ride a long time ago. We have been coming back pretty much every time I'm in town since then. I've lived outside of the US a lot in recent years and it was always nice to come here to get my Mexican food fix. I moved to California about a year ago and some of the tacos places out here aren't even as good as this joint.

  • Ron L.

Fantastic. I don't give out five stars often, but this one is deserving. Let's start with the negative. It's an unapologetic hole in the wall. Seriously, if you didn't know the place was there, you'd drive past it until someone clued you in. They've spent no money on furnishings or style -- and short of the tube television in the corner playing spanish language re-runs, you're not gonna find anything remotely interesting on the walls. If you need flash and sizzle to achieve a satisfactory culinary experience, this place isn't for you. That being said, Taqueria San Jose is authentic Mexican food. It's the real deal, folks. From garden fresh ingredients prepared in traditional Mexican style, to the clientele who seem predominantly Latino (always a good sign!), to the wait staff who are friendly and efficient. This restaurant understands the not-so-secret secret that if you produce delicious, fresh, and creative food at a reasonable price, the world will carve a path to your door. I ordered a combo plate of a chicken burrito and steak tostada adorned with the traditional beans/rice. What I got was light and fresh with a mild zip that was pleasing to the taste buds. The steak was marinated and cooked to perfection, The chicken was fresh and perfectly accented. It's not a "burrito big as your head" marketing pitch here. This is more about delivering high-quality fare that smacks of what you might expect in Mexico City. My daughter ordered tacos (soft shell) which are perfectly cooked and colorful with fresh ingredients and meats. I highly recommend the guacamole, which is lime-flavored with the freshest avocados and cilantro, and god knows what else. Absolute perfection. Don't fill up on the chips, which are homemade.! Bottom line: This place rocks. Amazing AUTHENTIC food for the right price. If you can deal with its "iffy" interior/exterior, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Food is fresh , authentic and consistent in taste and quality. Price is very reasonable . I am a fan of the beans and the tacos with cilantro , outstanding!!

Very authentic and charming little dive. Everything I've tried has been outstanding. Chorizo is awesome, chilaquiles, horchata - all of it. Not too expensive and our favorite Mexican place around. Not a high end "five star experience", but for a little local independent dive with authentic tastes it's as good as you'll find. We just love the place so it's tough for me to find a reason to subtract a star.

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this one yet! Every time we get together for game night, tacos from here are a MUST. Authentic and Delicious. The best Mexican food outside of Mexicantown. Warning: this is more of a carry-out joint than an eat-in restaurant.

Someone bought me take out dinner from Taqueria San Jose last night. The beef taco (cut up meat, not hamburger) on a corn tortilla and chicken quesadilla on a flour taco were delicious! The mild salsa and avocado sauce that were included were decent-to-good. The rice was okay (green bean pieces and carrots in it, huh?) and the refried beans were salty, but I tolerated them. Minus one and a half stars for that, but I will round up this time.

  • Chuck O.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! This place is AMAZING!!! People complain about the decor and the outdated TV. That makes the food shine that much more. You are as close to being in Mexico while eating here. I wish I could eat in the kitchen so I could watch them cook while I am eating. 5 stars are not enough for authenticity and taste. Absolutely Delicious!!!

This may finally end any chance I have of ever losing those unwanted 10 pounds. If I don't stay away the caftan store will be on the agenda. Incredible, authentic food! Friendly service. The steak burrito was perfectly cooked and seasoned and almost melts in your mouth. The rice and beans were fresh and light.Nothing like the heavy, flavourless rice and beans that are standard in your average Mexican restaurant. Nothing average here. Next time I plan on the ceviche or fish.Saving the menudo for a takeout on a nice, cold day. Now if they would only add chapulines to the menu ........

  • Terry G.

Seriously good food. It won't be fast, but truly fantastic. Ceviche? Really? Yes. A standout in mexican food. Even the refried beans stand out. Two very different salsas and a salsa verde. The pork, steak, and fish were very good. Chips and tostada shells excellent. Very very good quality. There's room to sit, and it lives towards the homey dive end of the spectrum. And I have to say, watching BBC CeeBeebies "Grandfather in my pocket" in Spanish was more than a bit surreal. Recommendation: Call ahead and eat in or take out.

  • Patsy C.

Their salsa is amazing, a little bit of sweetness, not too hot, so flavorful, and so good. Very inexpensive, 3 soft tacos for under $5. Best Mexican place around! I will definitely go back many many times.

  • Michelle M.

Consistently good, authentic Mexican food down to the rice and beans that go with their entrees. I've been trying the different Mexican places around town and always go back to this one.

  • Charles B.

Great hole-in-the-wall Mexican. I can't speak to authenticity, being pretty non-Mexican, but whether authentic or not (I suspect it is), it's really good, and really cheap. To say this isn't Chi-Chi's doesn't do it justice. Tacos with corn tortillas are awesome, salsa and avacado sauce (not really guac, but really good) are excellent condiments. Tried some other dishes, including the burritos, all good. Better for take-out because not a lot of ambience,, to say the least, but great place to have (sort of) close to home.

Great authentic Mexican food...the only authentic Mexican restaurant in town...

Most authentic Mexican food in these parts- and you can''t always hit Los Galanes when you live in the north. There is zero ambience- in fact, the vending area at a rest stop has more charm- but the food is better than most anything around- better than most carnita stands in LA or those under the rail taquerias in Chicago. They have Tacos, Burritos, Tortas, Tostadas-etc. With your choice of Steak, beef, chicken, or if you adventure tongue and tripe, or if your are me- swine and chorizo on a soft corn tortilla. They bring fresh limes and squirt avocado to the table with some of the best homemade salsa I've had. It is a little sweet, fresh herbs and maybe a little smokiness- not hot but flavorful. Chips were kind of fresh but not hot. I'll have to figure out when they cook them for the perfect meal. What sets them apart is the seafood. The pictures on the table show shrimp platters (heads on) but what I am going back for is the shrimp cocktail and the whole Snapper which I did not order, because you read what said about the ambience- I want to know a restaurant before I order something that might kill me. The table next to me got the cocktail, the shrimp were big and submerged in a clear liquid loaded with tomato and avocado, the tomato base was on top and they stirred it all together. I have ordered camarones before, but I have never seen it this way (always mixed before it hits the table). So the next time I go I will try seafood - maybe even the ceviche. Best of all was the price- with two diet cokes and three tacos, one was a "caporal"? , which I think is thier version of making a "supreme" taco, but ended up being a mini quesadilla all by itself - English is a second language here but the barrier worked fine in this case. It had a other few tables, all speaking in the native tongue. There are little whole in walls all over Southwest, but I doubt few are as fresh and flavorful as this no-frills family joint.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
