What happened? This used to be a favorite of ours in the U.P. but the last time we went, the soup was cold, the potatoes in the soup weren't cooked. The waitress apologized, but didn't seem to care. I ordered chili instead. It too, was cold....We won't eat there again. I think it's busy because it is the only restaurant for miles around.

Passing through and stopped in for a bite to eat. I had the Super Donna burger with fries. The special sauce helps to make a very good burger. The french fries were also better than most.

We vacation in the Wakefield area one to two times a year for the past few years. We have gone to Ma's Place numerous times for breakfast. We tried dinner there the other night and weren't disappointed. We had the Reuben and Donna's burger and both were very good. Though the corned beef on the reuben was clearly not homemade, it was very lean and they browned it first. They were very generous with the swiss cheese, and made sure the rye bread was nicely browned and crisped up. The Donna burger was huge and my husband liked the special sauce they put on it. He said it tasted like a mixture of 1000 Island and barbecue sauce. Both of our dishes came with fries which were also very, very good. They are not too thick and not too thin and were perfectly crispy without tasting burnt. Prices are very reasonable and the food is consistently good. I don't think we have ever had a meal we weren't happy with. We think this is one of the better restaurants in the area. My only complaint about our meal was that the restaurant was very hot. I don't think their air conditioning was working that night or something. We will be back for sure.

This was a lunch rest stop for me while passing through the area. I left Marquette in the morning and by the time I got to Wakefield, I was hungry and pulled into the first place I saw once we got into the town, which happened to be Ma's Place Cafe! From the road, it looks like a place that many would pass by, but I'm glad we tried it out. If I have to give one compliment, it's that they REALLY know how to deep-fry foods well. We shared a 4pc chicken meal that came with coleslaw and switched the fries to onion rings. We also ordered the battered shrimp appetizer which also happened to come with a large side of fries and some coleslaw. The shrimp came out first and was piping hot and you could tell it had been just battered and fried right then. I think I would have liked the batter a little thinner, but it was still good and I am pretty sure that they used raw, not pre-cooked shrimp. The fried chicken had shatteringly crispy skin... there wasn't any fat stuck to the skin either, it seemed to have melted into the chicken, which was super juicy. My only complaint is that the salt content was out the roof. The onion rings were thick cut and crispy. All heart-clogging goodness. I don't recommend eating like this more than once a month perhaps... Who knows when I'll ever be in Wakefield again, so I'll just have to recommend it here :) BTW the map shows it too far east. It's on US-2 on the south side of the lake.
