Recipes is a nice casual place for brunch. I had "The Great Divide" omelet with an english muffin. The texture of the omelet was great, it just melted in your mouth. The only thing it lacked was it needed more tomatoes. Tomatoes are one of my favorites on an omelet but it didn't come with much. My boyfriend had the eggs benedict and he thought it wasn't anything special. But he did say that the omelet was good. Both of our meals came with diced potatoes which were pretty good.

Breakfast = Great Dinner = Utterly Disappointing. We had dinner at Recipes tonight and were so disappointed. I ordered the fish tacos and honestly, if I wanted Van de Kamps microwave fish and Tostitos and Kroger salsa in a plastic cup, I would have eaten at home for much cheaper. The menu said slaw so I was expecting something with crunch not completely mushy tomatoes and cucumbers (?) drenched in mayo with slimy guacamole. May still go here for breakfast but will never go back for dinner.

Saturday breakfast - come early or wait, but just a bit. Fresh cut roses on all the tables - yes, I stopped to smell it. I invited my brother to join me, he arrived late, but not a problem. I ordered coffee and toast to start - multi-grain is 50 cents extra, but worth it. The Jelly trolley was standard Smuckers - yeah, strawberry. The creamer was half-and-half in a mini ewer - just the right amount of chilled for the hot coffee. I ordered the California veg. Benedict and ate my toast. My brother showed up and so did my food, he ordered sausage and eggs with wheat toast and I started to QA my Benedict. The poached eggs were perhaps a bit too jiggly, but I took that under advisement - the "spuds" were just perfect. They are cubes of Yukon gold [I think] and they are deep fried, but neither too well cooked nor evidence of excess oil was found - really quick nice, to a "cube." The Hollandaise sauce was light and flavorful and not excessively presented - just enough to cover without wilting the muffin. The spinach was lightly sauteed, and the avocado was firm, and upon dissection found the egg was about 98% perfect - the 2% is officially ignored after the second or third bite. The cinnamon apples were very tasty, but a bit sugary for breakfast. Now, as for my brother's breakfast, he made it clear he was well pleased. He noted the "mostly correct" over-medium was worth re-ordering; his take on the spuds was the same as mine - "more please!" - and he wants to know where to get that breakfast sausage; if they sold it for home preparation, he'd buy it. Definitely worth the trip.

Satisfied every time I come in here. Every single item is good on the menu. Thumbs up!!!!!!

I love this place for their skillets! I get the Roadster and it's so delicious that I'm craving one right now. Definitely the go to place for breakfast!

Definately a one of a kind restaurant. They only serve Breakfast and lunch. I came for breakfast. Its a "mom & pop" kind of shop...Not a chain or corporate restaurant. The hostess was great. Waitress was great too. Very quick with greeting, seating, and service. I never had to wait for anything from the time I walked in to the time I cashed out. The breakfast menu was VERY original and had 3 or more pages to choose from. I tried the California roll omelette...it was perfect. Coffee was good too. Overall very pleased. I will definitely be back. Now the bad part...It's not at all flashy from the outside, not too flashy on the inside either, as it is small with many tables close together...you may sit next to some one & since seafood is on the menu it may smell like a seafood restaurant. The table menus request you do not Camp Out! Long story short don't go here if you are fussy about smells, noise, or close personal space. If you want good service with a gourmet menu go here!

Possibly the worst eating atmosphere I've ever encountered in a restaurant. Showed up hungry for breakfast, and showing up to a restaurant and waited 30 minutes for a table. The dining area resembles a low-budget conference room, possibly a "before" shot from "Restaurant Impossible." The people at the next table were literally 1 foot away from me and my friend. They actually interrupted our conversation several times with small talk just because the closeness was so awkward. The waitress scrawled her name on a paper tablecloth, and proceeded to go on about the specials. I don't remember what I ordered, but I know I took at least two Xanax to help deal with the stress of being herded in like cattle at this nightmare of a restaurant. To be honest, I don't even remember the food - all I wanted to do was get the hell out of there. The atmosphere completely ruined my entire dining experience. Never again. I would rather sit home and eat corn flakes than endure that nightmare. Hell no!!

I loved this place. I like local places. It gets busy so get there like 25 min before you get hungry. I had some of the weekend specials was very good but my husband had the salmons omelet and it was exquisite. Also we had pancakes and they were great. Love their breakfast menu, they had so many options to order. Can't wait to be back and try more of those eggs
(5)Sandra S.
Love this place! Their Avacado Tuna Salad is great! My husband works near there and it's a great place to meet for breakfast or lunch on my days off. Would love to see them open for dinner.

I have to say, after seeing many of the recommendations here I have to concur with a great deal of them. The food was very very good, no it's not five stare, but it is IMHO really affordable and worthy of four. The only negative I would say is that service was a little slow - friendly - but slow. I had the Lox Benny which was very very good, in the salmon was extremely fresh. My wife had the Recipes Benedict, which other than the fact that she didn't realize it had tomato on it, she found extremely tasty. Even the coffee was tasty. If definitely recommend for brunch, just get there early, especially if your have we're going for in your group.

Well I hate to revamp my rating but I have had a problem the last 2 times there. In both instances I got the hummer sandwich with fries. In both cases they forgot the onion and the fries were cold. Today the server was better than the last time but no accommodation was made for the inconvenience of having my lunch date wait while I await my remade meal. I'm just getting sick of it. One time mistake, I can see that. Second time in a row, same mistake...? Someone needs to get a handle on the kitchen quality and customer experience. Oh and they've added "no camping" table tents. Taking a star off for that because it is so tacky I cannot ignore it. I know they want to turn tables but have some class. Good grief.

I've had the blackberry biscuits, omelettes, and egg benedicts here. All have been enjoyable meals! I always get carry out here, as it's not the most ambient location. It has a "Sunday brunch" type feel. No complaints. Unique menu, fast service and quality meals. Try this place for brunch one day!
(4)Rachel A.
I had heard positive reviews about the food here from a few coworkers, so I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it was so hot inside the restaurant that I didn't wait to find out for myself. Very disappointed. It's summer in Michigan.... Spring for some A/C or you will surely continue to lose customers.
(1)Sneha P.
Cute little restaurant. Many options but average on the flavor. Need a little extra zing or flavor pop to the dishes. I'd go back because the service is great and if I'm not looking for anything unique but consistently fresh & good food.
(3)Ann H.
Had breakfast here with my brother. I would give it full stars for food taste and freshness but the service, although friendly was slow and hard to find the waitress sometimes. It can get fairly busy late breakfast time so be prepared for slower service and a possible table wait. Would come back again for the food!
(4)Alecia M.
We had higher expectations for our first as we have always heard how great this place was supposed to be. My Husband ordered Oatmeal & Egg Whites, and I ordered the Crazy Greek Egg White Omelet. Portions were average. Service was average, but we were turned off by the fact that the staff were sitting at the front table eating and counting money. And a HUGE turn off was that the bathrooms were a complete mess. That makes me think about the staff that are working and handling food in the restaurant that have to share that space. First and last visit for us.
(2)Cristian P.
Recipes overall was pretty good. Good atmosphere, food, prices, service and portions.
(4)Nina C.
One of my favorite Brunch places. So good. I love their omelets. I wish they would get a liquor license.
(5)Roseanna O.
Recipes seems a good place for a business breakfast or lunch, although as a stay-at-home mom, I enjoy meeting up here with hubby or friends. White tablecloths & fresh flowers, Recipes is a step-up from a Coney Island, if you're looking for a nice breakfast or lunch at a decent price. Perfect place to hit for breakfast before heading over to Somerset Inventive, delicious offerings, attentive service.
(5)Jeffrey A.
Extremely pleased with the "blackberry biscuits" as well as the "Salmon Hash". I've only been there twice, but I was very happy with the food and service both times.
(4)Scott B.
Coffee Scrambler French toast Quick seating in a pleasant environment Many items to choose from on the menu Fast service from order to food arrival (good job Angie) Coffee was a little bland Good scrambler and French toast was average

Let me explain my 1 star review. Prior to our "bug salad" I would have given Recipes a well-deserved 3 or maybe even 4 stars. The service is typically slow, but the food is well-priced and tasty. My coworkers and I frequent this as a lunch spot several days a week. Fast forward to my last experience I'll have at Recipes. One of my coworkers ordered the Asian Chicken Salad and half way through eating the salad, noticed a large winged bug mixed in with the sauce. The bug was brown, spotted, and it's abdomen was approximately 1.5" long with a large wing spread of 2+ inches. I'm sure you don't care about the specs of this six-legged creature (okay, maybe it had 5 legs after being sloshed around in the salad). But, the image I'm trying to paint for you is that this bug was large. You can imagine our response to our new winged friend sharing the meal with us. We remained quiet, and softly explained to the waitress the situation with the dish as not to disrupt other diners. She swiftly removed the dish and credited the $9 salad. But there was no other mention of it. Again, we dine here several times a month as a large group - which was the situation this time. We didn't receive any other explanation or compensation besides the $9 meal. What about the other 7 people at the table who set down their forks because they were also turned off by the discovery? When we called to complain, all the MANAGER had to say was that the "bug was still moving." Are you kidding me? What kind of response is that. Was she implying that our group strategically placed the little guy in a pool of Asian Zing? No thank you. It's bad enough to come across a bug while enjoying a nice lunch out, but we all left with a bad taste in our mouths with not only the quality of food, but also the quality of management. We won't be returning for our group lunches, and our coworkers (who are the frequent flyers) also will not be returning. Bugs exist. I get that. But bad management does not have to.

One of the few brunch places in Troy. I loved coming here as I always feel at home. Even though there can sometimes be a wait, the food is definitely worth it. I also love that they give you crayons to draw on the paper clothes on the table. I've gotten their eggs benedict, crab thing, and salmon thing. All are very good. Honestly, don't think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. They are very good at substituting food, i.e. more fruit less bagel. Will definitely be back!

My wife and I went to Recipes for brunch today. Frittatas, omelets, hashes and other egg-centric dishes comprise the bulk of the menu. Within this theme are lots of stylistic choice (meat and ovo-veggie, traditional and nouveau). There is also a small selection of pancakes, French toast and other breakfast foods. I got the City Slicker omelet (egg whites, spinach, red onion, cheese, avocado). It was a healthy meal, moderately tasty without being too rich. My wife got a unique take on sticky buns: two English muffins with cinnamon butter covered with sliced, toasted almonds and accompanied by cooked apples with cinnamon and sugar. It was tasty without being cloying. The room was bigger than the storefront implied but was not huge. It was completely full (with a line) and the sounds of many conversations bounced around. The menu's somewhat upscale approach and the crowd's well-practiced sophistication give Recipes a Farmington / Birmingham / Bloomfield vibe. This is not a comfortable breakfast place like The Pantry in Sterling Heights. In fact, the tables have "No Camping" (or, as my wife called them, "eat and get out") signs. While I understand that the size of the room and the popularity of the restaurant would result in very long lines if parties hung around, I don't like the "in your face" solution that Recipes has chosen. I am deducting one star for that reason.
(3)J D.
Wonderful for brunch! Cute and interesting but inside. Never had something I didn't like, but I'm especially fond of the baked apples and eggs Benedict. Their potatoes are unique but fantastic. There are also a million great lunch options. Parking is tight though.
(5)Mary Y.
My first time to Recipes was this morning when I met a colleague. I really liked the quiet and calm atmosphere, especially after all the traffic lights were out on the way there. Even though they have "no camping" signs on the tables, we were there for 2 1/2 hours discussing lots and not eating a whole lot. Our waitress was kind, attentive, and friendly. Definitely not a place for kids. A huge menu of all types of choices, healthy and not so much. I had my standard green eggs which were cooked just right, an english muffin and sausage which I didn't care for. I'm a turkey sausage girl but they didn't have any so I ordered pork but it was huge and fatty. I'll definitely go here before other places in the very crowded area just for the peace and quiet and lack of Starbucks.

From the outside, this place seems like a fairly casual breakfast place. My husband and I arrived in jeans and sweatshirts, only to find the place filled with business people having oh-so-serious conversations. The tables are covered in white linen. This is not a casual coney breakfast. But even though we stuck out like a sore thumb, we had friendly service and a delicious breakfast. The star of the show were the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were cut in half and toasted on the grill, topped by flavorful gravy with chunky pieces of sausage and chives. The sausage wasn't crumbles, it was chunks from a link, so kind of different. We each had an egg "mixer" as well, which is a accompanied by forgettable potatoes--my only dislike about the place. There is nothing special about the potatoes--no seasoning, onions, peppers, nothing. Just fried home fries. The breakfast menu as a whole is fairly extensive and there is a long list of specials as well. Everyone is sure to be pleased at Recipes!

Service was good Food was a 4 out of 5 star. I got the Le salmone and my friend got the salmon hash. The are really good!!
(4)Joey K.
Best kept secret in troy. Breakfast is second to none and lunch is also very good. Staff is great, too.
(5)Lisa T.
Nice little place with very pleasant servers. Breakfast seemed to be the most popular meal. Since I am not a breakfast person, I opted for the Reuben. It was not huge, or over crowded with corned beef, perfect size. Came with fries which were better than average. Prices are very very reasonable, and did was week prepared and presented. I will definitely be back.
(4)Jessica L.
My coworker and I get luck here at least once a week and it's always Amazing!!!
(5)Dick E.
Well, now I see what the fuss is about. It's a must to have breakfast here if you like breakfast. Since I love breakfast, this place won me over with what they have to offer. They need bigger bathrooms though. At least enough to accommodate 2-3 people
(4)Scott T.
We came here for breakfast. All of the food was well prepared and fresh. The prices were reasonable. We will be back.
(4)Adrienne D.
This place is over hyped I waited a long time to be seated The atmosphere was out dated and crowed the food was just ok
(2)Karina K.
I've been here twice and I love the breakfast skillets here... Fast and friendly, but they get really busy!! They have expanded their lunch menu as well. Will be back!
(5)Holly S.
Love this place for breakfast/brunch never tried dinner here. The food is always FFF! (Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful!) the house spuds and homemade apple sauce are to die for! Kinda pricey for a breakfast place but I don't mind spending it at this place because it's just so darn good! Bacon tastes a little funky though...
(5)S H.
I love this restaurant. I have never had a bad meal there. Everything is always fresh and tasty so I don't mind paying a few dollars more. It is small inside and during peak times - it can be crazy busy, so if you go to dine in, be prepared to wait a bit. I work nearby so I generally get carryout and its always ready pretty quickly (10 to 15 minutes). I have tried several things on the menu but my most favorite dish is the "Southwest Hash". YUM. home fries, peppers, a little jalapeno, onions, chorizo, topped with 2 eggs over easy served with salsa, sour cream and guacamole. So good. I have seen a few reviews stating that the staff is rude and they rush you out - I have never experienced anything like that and I have been going there for the past few years. Staff is always kind and helpful and I never feel rushed. Recipes is one of my most favorite places to go.
(5)Amber M.
I'm not much of a breakfast lover, but my boyfriend insisted on bringing me here to have some breakfast with him not too long ago. I ordered a vegetarian omelette and it was amazing! Not only is the food great, but the service is fast and our waitress was friendly. Plus, they would not stop refilling my coffee and water, which is always a plus in my book.
(5)Ivana J.
I love breakfast foods at all times, so I like that Recipes offers them late into the day. The California Veggie Eggs Benedict was fantastic, and sort of a health food. The atmosphere is old-fashioned, but cute.
(4)C J.
This has become my go-to breakfast/brunch spot. Food is great and well presented. Lots of options. The interior is a bit small but we've never waited more than 20 minutes for a table and usually it's much less (and we go during peak brunch hours). Service has always been great. The cinnamon french toast and the strawberry cheesecake french toast are amazing! Consistently impressed with our experiences here!
(5)Amanda D.
Stopped here for the first time today and loved it! I ordered the "country eggs benedict" and my friends got blueberry pancakes and an omelette. Everyone loved their meals and the prices were reasonable. Found my new breakfast spot!
(5)Ian P.
Recipes is your basic standard roadside diner: Friendly staff, way too many coffee refills, adequate food, not too pricey, and busy on a weekend morning. The Food (3 stars): Solid, slightly basic, standards. Very extensive selection of Eggs Benedict varieties to try. I went with the super basic eggs, bacon, and toast. The eggs were good, the jelly came in a little packet, and the potatoes were these perfect cubical jobs that clearly had been well-acquainted with a deep freeze for a while. The Service (5 stars): Our waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive. I can't count how many times my coffee and water were refilled. Service was prompt and all our needs were met. The general atmosphere of the place was pleasant. Cost is on the moderate side, as one should expect for this type of place. Overall, It's somewhere around 3 1/2 stars, but I think I'm rounding up today.
(4)Sonali B.
We were looking for a place to grab breakfast and although Recipes doesn't take reservations for a small group, it was a pleasant way to start the day. Let me start this review by saying two out of the three diners in my group are vegetarians, myself included. Recipes does NOT have a lot of vegetarian options in terms of a bigger breakfast dish but plenty of small things you can order together. Between the three of us we had strawberry cheesecake french toast, an order of potatoes, a combination breakfast with french toast / egg whites / potatoes / bacon, and an order of sticky buns (English muffins with a cinnamon spread served with apples and cream cheese - fantastic!). All of us ate in peace and quiet as we sipped our cappuccinos, black coffee and waters and enjoyed fantastic service. I'd like to see Recipes incorporate scrambled tofu and other options in their menu for vegetarian diners. Yes, there are options but if you are a breakfast lover looking for way to satisfy your cravings, you may have a hard time if you don't eat eggs, fish or meat of any kind. That being said, I will be back.
(4)Rob M.
Unique menu- lots of different options. Service is good and food is also pretty good. Haven't had a bad meal yet, although some of it seems a little too 'pre prepared.' Overall I recommend and continue to come back. Try the pad Thai or avocado tuna salad.
(4)Roger J.
Recipes knows what it does and does it well. That being said. It doesnt do very much. Or rather, even tho the menu is extensive, its basically variations of the same thing over and over. For example, eggs+veggie+ cheese. So exactly what most diners offer for breakfast. It gets four stars from me because it location is very convenient, less than a five minute bike ride, because i love crab cakes and they offer crab cakes benedict on the weekend andddd they serve great lakes coffee. In addition, although the skillet and omellete options are standard fare, they all have always been delicious as well as all come with apple crisp. Very good. Add on a cappacino to cap your meal and im all
(4)Dominique K.
I go here every month or so with my mom for lunch. She lives nearby, so it's pretty convenient and certainly a cut above many of the tepid chains that abound in this Big Beaver/Crooks area. The dining room is a little on the smallish side, and having to walk through the dining room from the back entrance is a little inconvenient (especially on days when my mom is having more mobility issues than not). If you're a big meat/potatoes type, this may not be the place for you, but if you enjoy things like crab cakes, omelets, turkey sandwiches...you should find something tasty enough here. I usually end up ordering one of the specials, although the menu can be a tad pricey for lunch. I'm not fond of the ice tea, either...I expect fresh brewed ice tea at a place like this, rather than what tastes like Liptons or powdered ice tea (yeah, I'm an ice tea snob).
(3)Tammy S.
We left the restaurant. They have paper and cloth table cloths that Lauren of course wanted to pull on. So we took the paper and cloth off the table. The hostess came over and said we had to have something down on the tables for health code. She was very rude to us. We are at outback now with no table cloths.. I guess it is not a health code violation here?!
(1)Kaitlin M.
Bland... everything we ordered (5 different breakfast dishes for 5 people) was... BLAND. We had to ask for more ketchup and hot sauce it was so boring. The service was okay but the atmosphere is outdated. I will never go back.
(1)Jordan M.
I get lunch here often. The sandwiches are always great, fries delicious (can sub with fruit), and quickly made. I order pick up and it's ready in 15 minutes tops. Portions are sizeable.
(4)Michael N.
Old farts hangout on the weekend. Plan on catching a cold with your overcooked breakfast.
(2)David B.
Just had the ham melt and it was amazing. I had no idea this place was there. Very clean and the services is top notch. Recipies is a little gem....
(4)Keegan M.
Definitely the best breakfast place in Troy! Great atmosphere, friendly service, and most importantly, awesome food! The omelets are unique and a good size for the price. The hashbrowns are golden brown and crispy - not just a heap of half-cooked potatoes like many places. If you're anywhere in Oakland County, Recipes is worth the trip! :)
(5)N P.
The staff here deserves an extra star so four stars for them. They tried to help us but there was very little that was suitable for vegetarians on their dinner menu. Check out the dinner menu. Even items, like spring rolls, lettuce wraps, or the rice bowl or the Indian curry (I mean come on,that would have been perfect for me!!), that would seem to be so easy to make for vegetarians have pork or shrimp. We were told that items sometimes are prepared in advance so it is difficult to make modifications. We all ended up getting the same thing (a salad) and it was good but nothing outstanding. There really should be at least a handful of good vegetarian options on the dinner menu. The breakfast menu looks exceptional though. As a vegetarian I think I could find something on that breakfast menu.
(3)Kurt P.
This place serves an amazing breakfast. It's a little bit on the more expensive side, especially for breakfast, but it's definitely worth it. I could eat the Rambler every day... And the Salmon Eggs Benedict [Lox Bennie - I believe] adds a superb smokey flavor. The setting is very small, keeping it feeling very local and cozy. I love this place.
(5)Matthew P.
I rate this place three stars based on my first impression. I have not returned for a second visit, but this is not due to a disappointing meal. I've had a few friends that eat here often. Their take when I asked was that it isn't going to 'wow' you, but it's going to be creative, and consistent on quality. I have yet to test that myself. The prices are very fair, and I enjoyed the white table linen, along with real napkins and heavy silverware. The menu options for breakfast were nice. Lots of skillets / scramblers, several forms of eggs Benedict, well thought out omelets, as well as lighter fair for a heat healthy morning. I enjoyed a Frittata. I forget the name, but it had chorizo and other delicious items. It was covered in a layer of melted cheese, and topped with salsa and sour cream. Salsa seemed like standard issue GFS, but the Frittata itself was yum. I ordered a side of sausage links. These were massive, twice as thick as a standard sausage link you'd find at a Coney Island. Sorry for the poor description, should have taken a photo! They are amazing. Super delicious on the inside, a charred bark almost on the outside. Can you tell I like their sausage! I was also very excited that they carry sourdough bread. Maybe I don't eat breakfast out a lot, but the last place I could get sourdough bread was Cracker Barrel. It was toasted well, and heavy on butter not by request. I like it wet, but if you prefer dryer I would inform your server. Also the 'home-style' spuds on the side were done well. I tend to find home-style potatoes well done on the outside, and still mealy/undercooked on the inside. Why I go for hash browns always. These were very enjoyable, however. All in all, an enjoyable breakfast. I think this a great little spot for brunch. The food is priced on par with the quality & quantity for my first impression. If they deliver consistent yum, and service on future visits I would increase to 4 stars. ~Matt
(3)Alicia K.
I only took one star away because they don't have as many sweet breakfast dishes as I would expect (crepes, waffles, etc.), that I really think they have potential to do well. Also because it really wasn't spectacular, just solid. Everything was just what I would expect it to be. We had the corned beef hash, eggs Benedict with salmon, sticky buns, coffee, bacon, OJ, and Chai. This place in two words: damn good. Service was very good. Our waitress was nice and very attentive. We really just didn't have anything to complain about. And the prices were so reasonable. Both dishes looked beautiful and tasted very good. The sticky buns were one of the more unique things I've ate in a while... You'll have to try it to know what I mean. The chai was very mild and big. The coffee was pretty standard. Fresh squeezed OJ. Fresh fruit. Good taters too. I will definitely come back here.
(4)Andrew H.
They have several unique dishes and a ton of selection. Coffee is always fresh and they refill your cup faster than you can drink. Service is great, prices are fairly cheap. Fresh squeezed orange juice. Great place to grab breakfast.
(4)Dan O.
Had lunch on a Tuesday around 11:30. Service is friendly and efficient. Ordered a Crazy Greek Omelete, my colleague ordered the Veggie Omelete. My omelete was a good size, but the eggs were overcooked, fairly tasteless, and leathery. Ditto on my colleague's omelete. The feta cheese was oddly lacking in salt and flavor, and the spinach was also bland. Toast and coffee were good. The breakfast potatoes were overcooked, and somewhat dried out. Overall, uninspired omeletes, overcooked and leathery. With all of the great choices in the area I will not be returning. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either.

I had breakfast here the other day on the recommendation of my hotel concierge and it was alright. I wasn't super hungry so I had a basic breakfast, I think it was called 'Farmer's Choice'. They did have other interesting items on the menu like "California Roll Omelette' which I will try next time I go to Troy. The decor was cute. They serve super-affordable breakfasts but dress up the table with white linens and a fake red flower. In terms of service, our order was taken within a few minutes and our food arrived quickly but when it came time to ask for the bill nobody was in sight. After waiting a while I had to get up and go around the corner to ask for our bill. The whole staff was around the corner chatting.
(3)Kate R.
Crabcake Eggs Benedict. Delicious. I met my parents here for a brunch after work on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago. Waited a bit for a seat, but the place is small and apparently popular - can't fault them for that. All of us were pleased with our meals. Potatoes were well seasoned, portion was great for the price, can't complain. Menu is diverse but not overwhelming - lots of great breakfast and lunch options. Parking is a bit of a pain, but the wait and the effort is worth it for a great brunch option and good service. It's also nice to have a LOCAL, non-chain place to head with quality food!!!
(4)Jakub B.
Great little place for breakfast (at least the only meal that I got to enjoy here). From crisp white table cloth to fancy diner atmosphere feel this is a great little gem for breakfast if you are going to the mall or doing something in he area. I am not sure if it has a separate menu for non lunch meals, so I can only speak of the experience I had at breakfast. My order consisted of the 'CitySlicker omelet' and my gf had the 'Cinamon Swirl French Toast' which she really enjoyed. My omelet was very well prepared, eggs were great consistency, no lightly darkened areas that got more head, all evenly cooked and nicely laid out on the plate with cubed potato / fries / hash brown arrangement. Overall, I would come back here as we were both pleased.

Imagine Big Boy's refined older sister. The hot one in college who studied in France for a semester. That's this place.

The restaurants name RECIPES really does speak true for this place. From reading over the menu I can see that they have taken the steps necessary to craft a menu that blends spices and ingredients in unique combinations that are a delight to eat. Their food seems to have a Southern/Country base with an Asian spin. Every item I have had is interesting and new to my taste-buds. The dining area is decorated simply and uncluttered. Mostly square tables that are easy to move around or combine for larger groups. Each table is covered with a white tablecloth and a white sheet of paper that is changed after each sitting. All of the tables have Real Live Roses in a vase! This fact alone tells me that they are doing well. I'm sure live roses would be the first thing to be done away with if business were tough. I have only been to Recipes for breakfast. Early morning there is plenty of seating and parking, but I have driven by later in the morning and at lunchtime to see a full parking lot and packed restaurant. Check their listing for hours. They are open for breakfast/lunch and then close for an hour or two allotting them time to transfer over to a dinner menu on a few days of the week. Prices are a little higher than at other restaurants, but you Do get what you pay for. They use quality ingredients and it tastes like they make their sauces in-house. Portions are large at Recipes and when eating alone I always bring home a little leftovers. Great place! Give 'em a try.

Great breakfast food (only thing I've had after multiple visits). I've yet to have an item from the breakfast menu I don't like. It's tough to mess up morning food, but Recipes does an exceptional job.

Being out of towners, we were a bit turned off by the outside appearance of the place, but decided to check it out anyway. Once we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised and glad we came. Good food, good service, and lots of options on the menu. Def recommend trying this cute little restaurant.

Going to be in the Detroit area later this year and this will be one of my stops. Love, love, love the Eggs Benedict here, but enjoy the atmosphere even more. Great food, great service, terrific people...they make you feel like family...looking forward to it...;) Want to try their shrimp and egg roll salad..I saw a picture and it looks yummy!

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the place is kinda scary looking. (by scary I mean run-down) When we pulled in the parking lot, we were the first ones there for dinner at 5 o'clock. The back door to the kitchen was wide open and I wondered what kind of interesting creatures could wander in. I didn't feel much better when I walked in the place and smelled the musty old smell and outdated decor. All of the good reviews here kept running through my mind so I tried to ignore my sight and use my other senses instead. The food is out-of-this-world good!!! I had the pork Vietnamese dish that I cannot pronounce to save my life. (something called Bun Thit?) It was delicious marinated tender sliced pork on top of rice noodles, lettuce, and cucumbers with a sweet garlic dressing. This was the first time I've had Vietnamese food and it certainly won't be the last. My sister had the Pan Asian Noodle dinner and she really liked it. The sweet garlic sauce was to DIE for and I asked for 2 extra servings of it! If only they would spruce the place up a bit, I would feel better about eating here but the food is so darn good that I'm willing to look the other way.

Delicious!!! Cute atmosphere. Lox Bennie was delicious and filling. Little pricey but well worth it. Will be back. Good breakfast/lunch place.

I think the problem with Recipes is that they don't use a griddle. While that may be a plus for some folk, I thought the food lacked flavor generally. However, this was the most recent edition of FBT with Jeffrey and Pinecone. Recipes is located just south of the Big Beav on Crooks. It's a blue little building with a yellow marquee. It doesn't appear to be anything special and if you blink you might miss it. In side the interior is bright. There are fresh flowers on the tables and white tablecloths on the tables covered with at sheet of white paper. Recipes is mostly a breakfast place with several pages of breakfast foods including frittata, omelette, mixers and skillets. Recipes has the normal choices of eggs, pancakes and the Big 3 breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, ham). The breakfasts feature interesting items such as water chestnuts, crab, cream cheese and other unusual toppings. There are also some sandwich and salad options for lunch. Strangely, the menu features assorted ethnic cuisine like pho and pad thai and chicken scaloppini. It's a strange assortment of food on the menu and on the specials list. I chose this combo plate. I don't think that they have a griddle for these reasons. First, the waitress said the eggs usually are basted. Second, the "spuds" as they call them are little fried cubes, not like american fries or hash browns, but perfectly fried little cubes. Third, my pancakes didn't have the richness or the crispy outside of pancakes cooked on a greasy griddle. I applaud Recipes for keeping the food healthy and not mixing things together. However, I noticed the food just lacked a lot of flavor. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't have the more subtle, complex, greasy undertones of a coney island restaurant. I think they might do this to appeal to an older clientele. I swear we were a good 30 years younger than the other 20 women in the place. Our waitress was nice and was excellent. The food was hot and fresh. The atmosphere was calming. The coffee was very good but $2 for a bottomless cup. Overall, I hate to give Recipes 3 Stars but it was just "A-Ok" as prompted above. All things considered, I'm not going to run back out to Troy for breakfast here. I appreciate everything the restaurant was doing and there was nothing wrong with the restaurant. It just didn't meet the flavor expectations that I desired.

I am actually surprised that Recipes doesn't have higher reviews. I've been here 3 times and it's never been a bad experience. The restaurant looks like nothing special from the outside and even on the inside it isn't going to blow you away. However, the food has always been excellent, and the staff is awesome. Their menu isn't the largest out there and has everything from fish and chips to Pad Thai. I was surprised at the number of Asian dishes on their menu. The portions are large enough to have leftovers and the desserts are heavenly! Because I am a creature of habit and because it is simply delicious I have gotten the same thing (Shrimp mac and cheese) each time I have gone there. I have split this meal with other people so I have tried other dishes and they were all delicious. I just can't get enough of that mac n cheese! Tonight we also tried the crab cakes which were meh, nothing special really and my mother got Chicken Scallopini which was delicious! We ended the dinner with a French Kiss which is a yummy dessert!! We will definitely be returning! I'd love to try their breakfast!

Recipes is good, but not mind blowing. I think average is an appropriate term. I came here on a Sunday morning with my parents. The wait wasn't too long, around 15 minutes. We were seated right next to the back door, which was kind of a bummer because of the traffic coming through...it was pretty cold outside so a rush of wind hit us whenever someone entered or exited. We ended up keeping our coats on through our meal. I ordered the california benedict. The presentation was gorgeous, but the flavors were kind of lacking. Service was kind of slow, but I understood it was really busy. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but if my parents offered to buy me another meal I would definitely go.
(3)STEVE H.
Really a good dinner. No complaints. The food was fresh and tasty. The portions were perfect. I had enough to walk away full and not stuffed. My Fiance had enough left over for her work lunch the next day. Its very homie inside. Women will like this resteraunt alot. Fresh flowers on the table. Nice linens, etc...

A comprehensive summary in 5 words: 1) Hoppin' vs dead: Hoppin' 2) Yum vs no yum: Yum 3) Boy vs girl: Boy (-ish) 4) Friendly vs b*****es: Friendly 5) Cheap vs Moneybags: Cheap (-ish) Now that we've got that out of the way, let me share my thoughts on this little breakfast/lunch/dinner (...."brinner?"....) place next to the mall: I ordered a seafood benedict with crab, and will add that there were a lot of good-looking options on the menu, including many scramblers. But the clincher was this, on the end of the dinner specials section: "Bun thit nuong cha gio" ...wait, what? What happened here? Did I pick up the wrong restaurant's menu by mistake? Did I suddenly fall through the floor and end up on 13 Mile and Dequindre? What is this doing next to pancakes and omelettes? (For those not in the know, this is a Vietnamese dish, and consists of marinated pork and egg rolls served over cold vermicelli noodles, vegetables, and fish sauce) Apparently, Recipes also serves a couple of...pan-Asian would be the best way to describe them...dishes at dinner, which sort of blows my mind away. It's like KFC serving ice cream, or Little Caesars serving lumpia. Anyhow, I only had my breakfast option, and it wasn't bad by any means, though not particularly memorable. But I really want to come back here at night -- maybe this will be the elusive best-in-Detroit Vietnamese restaurant that I've been looking for!

So I have a dilemma with this place. I'm not sure if I should give it 3 or 4 stars. When I first started going here, it was 3 stars at best. Their omelets never wowed me but the Pepper Pot frittata was was good, the rye bread actually has seeds (YAY!!) and the potatoes were home fries that I thoroughly enjoyed. Still something about this place I just couldn't love. Maybe it was the uber strong coffee or that fact that you always feel rushed to get out, or maybe it was the obnoxiously large group that I always got seated next to with the old guy that would knock my chair and the young girl that never felt like brushing her hair. I kept going back though because it was close, easy, and we always managed to get in right between church crowds and rarely had to wait. Now after making this place the fallback Sunday breakfast spot, I found my favorite dish - the Country Cool scramble with egg whites and no ham. You really can't go wrong with scallions and cream cheese. I've come to terms with this place being just decent enough to go to but not great enough to give it 4 stars. For the old guys: quit knocking into my chair! For the teenage girls: for the love of god brush your hair! For the waitstaff: bring the coffee (or just decaf) down a notch. Thanks!

I've eaten at a lot of different breakfast restaurants, but this by far is the best in my opinion. The granola almond pancakes are delicious as well as the rambler skillet. The coffee here is good as well! I also enjoy how cozy it is inside.
(5)Andrea S.
Love this place for lunch - surprising range of choices - had a couple great dinners here too. It's quiet - the service is good and the food - my faves are the Asian dishes - is consistently great.

This is one of the places that I truly missed since I moved away...have my sticky bun...my fav...why can they have anything like this in AZ?
(4)Chris M.
I think the Yelp description for 3 stars is a great way to describe it: A-OK. It feels like a place that is trying to be a little more upscale, but comes off as, I guess, a higher end diner. Think Fly Trap, but without the same execution. I came here with a group of 5 people on a Monday around 11 or so, as we wanted food but didn't want to stray too far from my friends house. Three of the people in our group had been before, I hadn't. I was kind of excited, as it was one of those places I was always curious. I ordered the Benedictine Omelette, while my friends had all ranges of different food. Eggs Benny and two other omelette I believe. I wasn't paying a ton of attention. The food itself was actually pretty good. For the price, you got a good sized meal and some delicious potatoes on the side. The food was quality, I'd say a solid 4 stars. The atmosphere and the service did leave something to be desired. Its hard to say that about the service, as there was nothing wrong with it, but she could've been more attentive. We had to ask for coffee and water refills once or two, but our food came out in a timely manner and she was fairly friendly. The atmosphere felt... off. For what the restaurant is, you'd expect better decor, more professional looking table covers, etc. And what Kristin said was true, out of the 8-10 tables there, only one was anywhere near our age. Overall, I will be coming back. They have some good food at decent, but not spectacular prices. I will most likely stick to the Ferndale set of brunch locations, as their prices are the same and I enjoy the variety of food more.
(3)Kit C.
I love this neighborhood spot. It is attractive in a low key way and offers great service. The staff remember you even if you go once in a blue moon. I have had the French Toast and loved it, but then I discovered I could create my own omelet. i am sure they have more than one cook, but my omelet is always consistently great. This joint is unpretentious, cheap, friendly, and most importantly the food is excellent.

I've been going to Recipes since they opened in 2003. Let me clarify on what I mean by "going". In the first few years, I thought their breakfast was excellent and used to think of it as a go-to brunch spot. Then I thought it took a bit of a downturn... or I realized I wasn't really that into their menu; not sure which. So we stopped going for the most part. Been back a handful of times however, when other family members wanted to go. It has improved slightly i.e. back to solid during that time. They tried staying open for dinner a few years back and it didn't work out so they stopped serving dinner. Now they're back open for dinner: I believe Tuesday - Saturday 5 - 9 pm. You can order anything off the regular breakfast/lunch menu plus they have a short dinner menu consisting of crepes, Vietnamese-inspired entrees, and a couple of other items. Plus dessert. Which brings me to present day. Went for dinner tonight. I ordered the glazed salmon ($12). It was a decent-size piece of fish, expertly cooked, moist, and just slightly flavored. It was served on a bed of raw baby spinach (like a salad) drizzled with a tremendous soy/sweet vinaigrette. Two pieces of so-so garlic toast topped it off. Right-sized portion; plenty to eat, but no feeling "I shouldn't have eaten the whole thing" either. One of my companions had the Thai Chicken Noodle ($9) which was pasta, chicken and veggies in a peanut sauce. They thought it was excellent and once again a right-sized portion. Others ordered breakfast which were spot on. For dessert, we had a peanut chocolate mousse pie ($5). A little small, but nice presentation. Others liked it - wasn't quite my thing. Also ordered the apple spring rolls; think of them like a deep-fried apple pie with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with caramel. These were excellent although I think they put way too much whipped cream on the plate (for presentation purposes) - four massive globules. Same great atmosphere as at breakfast; although a little quieter as people don't think of Recipes for dinner.

Tasty food in a friendly and casual mom and pop restaurant environment

My favorite thing about this restaurant is that the breakfast is tasty and unique and very reasonably priced. If you want to go somewhere that is breakfast with a twist, go here. I had the California Eggs Benedict and it was Eggs Benedict with avocado and artichoke. It came with a side of fried potatoes and a side of cinnamon warm cooked apples. My boyfriend had the cinnamon swirl french toast and it was a good size portion and he really enjoyed it. For two glasses of fresh juice, our meal and his side of sausage, the price was only $24! I will definitely go back again.
(5)Davis H.
Worth a look. I order the Bandito skillet. The presentation was very nice and thought the meal was good. The flavor was good and had some nice spice. Some of my other friends were not over whelmed with their meal, but willing to give another chance.
(4)Colleen D.
I started going to Recipes a few years ago. I think I was attracted to the purple sign :) I have only been there for breakfast/brunch but I have always had a good meal. I tend to get their different Eggs Benedict options. I also get the Chai, which is served in a huge mug...yum. The ambiance is cute, but not unique by any means.
(3)Jerson J.
Taste fresh n big portion.

I've been to Recipes just a handful of times and have no doubts that I'll be back. This isn't quite your typical breakfast/brunch place, but there are no real standouts either. You're not gonna find your $4 egg special with meat and potatoes here, but you will find a more than decent Eggs Benny and a nice vegetarian version of it as well. The "sticky buns" are something you can easily replicate at home and I remember being disappointed when I got them and realized what I had paid $4 for, so don't fall for the outstanding description that will make you think you have to have them. You don't. The biscuits and gravy are just okay too, although I've yet to find a place that makes anything even close to what my Mom makes, so they all fail in comparison. This last time I got the Ranchero Frittata and it was really tasty and a huge amount of food, which I couldn't finish. Again, nothing really special about it though. The potatoes were just little deep fried potato cubes without any seasoning or anything, not even salt, and the ketchup was easily the cheapest you could find and barely helped to liven those spuds up. The service each time I've gone has been relatively cold, but attentive enough. All in all, I don't think I'm done with Recipes yet. There's plenty left on the menu for me to explore (I haven't had any of their sweet menu options) and I have definitely had good food there, so I would recommend them just for that, especially if this area is your neck of the woods.
(3)Ashleigh A.
this was our 'secret breakfast meeting place' for my girlfriends and I to have weekly Sex in the City style breakfasts. The food is delicious, the cinnamon french toast is to die for! breakfast does get pricey since it's more to upgrade to the good french toast and you don't get toast with your eggs but it's worth it. Everything else is kind of plain though and after a while you realize except for a few items it's hard to justify the price. fabulous place for Sunday brunch, big church crowd, you'll feel out of place if you go get breakfast after a rough night out w/o taking a shower and getting ready.
(4)Kristin G.
Tasty, but nothing mind blowing. I'm an Eggs Benny addict and theirs was good but nothing phenomenal. Their home fries, fantastic! I guess just overall, the verdict was: satisfactory but not exciting. I'd go back, but it wouldn't be my first choice of breakfast places in the area. The crowd is very Senior-esque...I'm not talkin High School.

In the midst of strip-mall central, it's nice to find a place that's relatively unique and cozy like Recipes. The atmosphere is pleasant in a "mom-sweater" kind of way. Know what I mean? A mom sweater is a sweater that's plenty comfy, probably looks "acceptable," but isn't exactly the most fashionable thing in your wardrobe. You keep wearing it because it's just so darn comfortable, but you know it was probably designed with someone a good 10-20 years older than you in mind. If you think of Recipes as a "mom sweater" of restaurants, you'll get my drift. The place is comfortable enough -- particularly because of very sweet and helpful staff. The food is fairly good -- better than a standard coney breakfast. I liked the pepper pot frittata quite well. It and its accompanying potatoes were better than what I could make at home. However, they still weren't to level to really wow me and convince me to return. It does seem like a good place for families, though, including multi-generational get-togethers. Quite a few of the patrons were probably in that new-grandparents-but-not-the-Denny's-crowd demo. If looking for a decent breakfast or brunch in this area, this could be a fit. However, it isn't a place I'd consider worthy of a long drive/journey.
(3)Craig H.
The seafood benedict with crab was done right. It wasn't K-rab, but the real deal (definately canned, but it's Michigan, so ya know, we take what we can get! The portions weren't made for an outrageously hungy person, which is welcome in my book. I don't dig leavin breakfast feeling like I won't have another meal 'til Tuesday. The service is attentive, and nice. This is a decent menu. I am a certified breakfast freak, and I have sampled all over metro detroit. My main gripe is the atmosphere. It's a little too fine dine-ish for me. In my opinion, if I can order breakfast, I should feel comfortable enough to roll out of bed and march in in jeans and a sweatshirt still bleary-eyed. The clean lines and open look of the place did not give an element of privacy and I suppose the clientele didn't help with this either (pressed shirt and tie types having power lunches..) They should take a page from Frittata in Clawson on how to make a place feel more Home-y without the use of booths. Food was good, I will be back when I'm in the area. Here's where I put it.. Frittata over Breakfast Club equals Fly Trap over Recipes over Honest John's over Toast. I don't 'hate' any of these places, but I find Toast very overrated and pretentious. So don't get me wrong on my placement of breakfasts in metro Detroit. I would eat at any of these places.
(4)Candius S.
Receipes Benedict is fabulous! Tip add a side of guacamole.
(4)Matthew P.
Though Fritata in Clawson would have to be my all time favorite brunch spot, this one takes a close 2nd. The atmosphere is nothing fancy. Though the place could use a small face lift, the vibe is laid back and casual. If you're a fan of the Mexican themed breakfast plates (as I am) I would strongly recommend the Ranchero or the Bandito. The eggs benedict are usaully right on point as well and hit the spot. A huge downfall for this place is the fact that you can't get a bloody marry. If they had their liquor license this place would have hit the five star for sure.

I've heard a lot about Recipes so we decided to give it a try for breakfast on this wonderful MLK day. I wouldn't really say this place has a lot of personality - from the outside it looks like it would be sleek and modern inside, but the inside is made up of cheap square tables, those upholstered chairs that you see in funeral homes and a weird kind of salmon wall color. On the walls were some really cool pictures of downtown Detroit and other Michigan cities, but they looked out of place compared to the surrounding decor. It probably didn't help that the place was packed with old people - making it feel way more like an outing to a nursing home than a place to eat breakfast. (The line to use the bathroom was out of control!) Our waitress said that they were known for their eggs Benedict, the frittatas and the blackberry biscuits. I happen to LOVE blackberries so we ordered those. The biscuits themselves were delicious but I found the blackberry sauce on top of them overwhelmingly too sweet. I had the artichoke Benedict while my husband had the classic eggs Benedict. As a whole, the dish was good but nothing too amazing. The combination of the creamy avocado and artichoke was nice and it worked well with the basics of the dish but my English muffin was burned around the edge and I felt like the dish didn't have a lot of taste. For some one who loves breakfast as much as I do, I found this place to be disappointing. I'd be willing to try it again if there are some suggestions on what exactly to eat, but over all I wasn't impressed.
(2)Laura M.
One of my favorite brunch places in the area. Their breakfast potatoes are delicious. I have tried several dishes and they have all been good but my favorite is the Atlantic - a scramble of dill, crab and cream cheese. There is always a wait on Saturday and Sunday though so be prepared. But they do the best job they can getting people seated.

Man, it's been a minute since I've reviewed anything. No time like the present! My wife and I have been making it a tradition to go to breakfast every week, and today we chose this spot. I drive by it every day to work, and read some reviews, and it sounded great. Upon our arrival, we both noted the somewhat "upscale" appearance which was lovely. The flowers and white tablecloths were also nice. I should note that it is Sunday morning, and there plenty of tables available, so we were seated, and offered beverages immediately. The menu was typical, but creative, with fun little quirks that made it nice to read. My typical standby for a breakfast spot is blueberry pancakes. If you F those up, it's not worth returning. So I got those, with a side of sausage links, and my wife got the Spanish omelette with chorizo and green chilies. The food arrived promptly, and I have to say, was a little less than fabulous. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I was definitely not impressed, but not disappointed either. The pancakes came with a lovely blueberry compote, but they also left a funny aftertaste. It almost seemed like the batter had too much baking soda in it. Also, the syrup was warm ,and actually from a tree, which was a plus. So, I made them better with the side accouterments, but on their own, they were not very good. My wife said her meal was lovely. Also, the coffee was great, and the sausage was great. So, I suppose we will try this place again, despite my previous statement of how I judge breakfast spots. To have only one fault in an otherwise flawless experience warrants another visit. Cheers!
(3)Jill C.
I'd heard that this was THE place to go for breakfast so we finally broke down and went. The white table cloths are definitely a bit intimidating and the prices are a bit high. I ordered the California Roll omelet and it was OK. I appreciated the real crab meat but other than that it didn't really wow me. I liked the crispy cubed potatoes, they weren't the shreaded hashbrowns that you find most other places. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was delightful. The real red roses on the tables were a nice touch and my kids loved the paper on the tables to color on. Next time I plan on trying a benedict of some kind.
(3)Carol H.
Had lunch today. What a great menu. Hard to choose. Had the lettuce wraps. Would definitely order them again. Very yummy.
(5)Judye R.
This place is yummy! The best scrambled eggs I have had in my life. Who knew scrambled eggs could be so good. Lightly, fluffy, full of flavor and delicate. Great service, too. Can't wait to go back!
(4)myrrisa h.
ok so this place is weird. i thought the food was ok despite the fishiness of my salmon. I had the eggs benedict with salmon. they said they are famous for there eggs benidict but to be honest i have had better. i like a lighter taste of salmon as it over powered the whole dish plus i like a little more hollendaise on my benidict. . the potatoes were not the best. kind of rubbery and nothing to spice them up or make them any different then the local koney island. I will say that i really liked the menu items though. it was fun and different and it will keep me coming back again. there were a lot of dishes that i really wanted to try. so i dont know if i just got an off day or what. i will be back to try it again for sure. the waitress was awesome! very good service. she was so nice and had a lot of good suggestions. the place is located next to a koney island and a 7 eleven, which for some reason turns me off. i have driven past this place a million times and never noticed it. it was nothing special inside. i did like that they had fresh flowers on each table. it was packed at 11am on a friday. anyway, i may need to try this place again to get a better feel for it.

Decent benedicts. Substandard hashbrowns. Good service, though I don't love when people write their name on my table. I can remember.

I've worked in Troy over 6 years now and passed by Recipes almost everyday. My friend Sarah was in town and we decided to meet for lunch; she suggested Recipes, so being one that likes to try new places, I was totally down. The decor is pretty plain; fairly bare walls, little faux (aka fake) flower in a vase on the table, boring menus. The only plusses were the white tablecloths and cloth napkins (a rarity unless you're spending a fortune for lunch). The menu had some good choices. Sarah opted for chocolate chip pancakes (she was 7 months pregnant after all) and I decided on one of their scrambles. Eggs, bacon and homefries. Eggs were good, bacon crisp but the homefries were cold and obviously reheated from being cooked hours earlier. Service was slow - I only get a 1/2 hour for lunch so I ended up getting a speeding ticket on my way back to the office - I do realize that's not all Recipes fault :-) All in all, not a horrible experience but I probably won't go back unless I really have to.

I think my attitude towards my meal is best explained through the artwork above the urinal in the men's room. Framed and proudly hung is a photo of a street scene with a prominent restaurant sign that one might regard as "charming" or, "someplace that looks nice but fictitious" when in actuality it's Como's in Ferndale; Recipes looks fancy and like it should be an amazing meal when it's more average and okay. It's like the patrons may not understand what a real fabulous breakfast (Club Bart, Toast, Fly Trap) is because they may not be familiar of these Southern parts below 696. (Is it South? I don't know, but you get the idea.) It saddens me that I am willing to wager a large percentage of the men using the tinkler may not be aware that the picture they're looking at of the restaurant that serves mediocre pizza and has horrible service is really just down the way. I guess ignorance is bliss sometimes. Then again, maybe they are aware and I'm over analyzing this. I am also curious what's hanging in the ladies'. In any regard, I think that Recipes is serving an alright breakfast but trying to pass it off as something more special. The clientele of Recipes appeared to be mainly the collected grandmother's of Troy and a few business women. After what feels like an epic hiatus, Fancy Breakfast Thursday resumed with Pinecone, Ryan L., and myself in attendance. In an effort to try something new we settled on Recipes. Upon entering, my thoughts quickly turned to generic hotel restaurant. It smelled (and looked) like we should be in the lobby watching screaming kids in flip flops looking for the over chlorinated pool. We were seated and our waitress came over and wrote her name upside down with a fuchsia crayon. After she did, I took her crayon and wrote my name upside down too. With that out of the way I was able to delve into the menu. With three full pages of breakfast items and one of sandwiches, salads and other assorted entrées, and the addition of a daily specials page, it seemed like it was going to be difficult to choose. I opted for the Bounty Harvest Mixer (eggs scrambled with mushrooms, broccoli, cream cheese and I had them add water chestnuts mostly because they were an option!) Breakfast meals were served with spuds (think steak fries but cut into squares) and either toast or English muffin. Coffee was, as usual, the beverage of choice. The coffee was very good. When the meal was presented my first thought was this seems a little small but maybe it's deceptive? With my first bite of the eggs I could taste the cream cheese but the general flavors were all muted. I added salt, pepper, and ketchup. And then more pepper. And more after that. Maybe in an effort to be healthy they just cut down on flavor? I think that garlic or onion may have added the extra kick my eggs were lacking. The vegetables were all cut very finely so it felt like they just got sucked into the blandness too. I remarked during our meal that I was amazed all of the walls weren't beige--though a lot of them were. I found the potatoes to be good and reminiscent of my favorite ones from my college's cafeteria. The ketchup on the table was House Recipe, sadly not Heinz, but acceptable. At least the jam/jelly was Smuckers. Talking about our meals everyone seemed to agree that the flavor profiles weren't well thought out and that the addition of herbs or a stronger flavored cheese might have saved the day. I think that if they would have served their food on smaller plates it wouldn't have appeared that the portions were so small. . . it's probably not even that they're small but that as an American we're used to plates of food bigger than one should usually stomach. At first I thought I was going to rate this a 4 star experience--especially since they put a doily under the coffee cups! As I ruminated more on the experience, 3 stars just seemed more appropriate. The food was good and prepared well, it just needed more flavor. I wouldn't drive out of my way to come to Troy for breakfast here when I could be in Ferndale, aka MI's Brunch City, USA, and if I were in Troy I might consider going to Ram's Horn instead. . . or Hooters. . . just kidding. . . or am I? Vive FBT!

If you're in the mood for a good local breakfast with fair prices that's not a Coney Island, then this is your place. The menu has enough variety that I plan to return just to try more dishes because it was so hard to decide on my first visit. We tried the blackberry biscuits and I thought the blackberry sauce was good, but not necessarily worth $4. The meals themselves are hearty and very filling. I liked that there were crisp white tablecloths and a fresh flower at each table. I would highly recommend this place for breakfast with friends or family. Just wanted to add an update to their dinner service - I do not recommend dinner. Their menu is very limited to sandwiches, dinner crepes, and fish. It's not very good and overpriced. Stick to breakfast!

Recipes is a good spot for lunch. The menu is full of variety. I have tried a few things here, some very good- others not so much. Their Thai inspired dishes are tasty, there is one salad on the menu from time to time that's pretty darn good. The Asian vermicelli is another dish that was superb. So this place was a deli years ago, operated by this big friendly guy named Sy. They made THE BEST Ruebens in the city. I miss that guy! So out of memory I ordered one at Recipes. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, half cause how it stacked up (or didn't) to Sy's, half cause it just wasn't good. The place deserves 3.5 stars, just don't get the corned beef till they figure out how to radically improve the sandwich.

This is a good place for breakfast. Small, cozy, yet, odd location. But decent food. I had their biscuits and gravy, and chicken coop. yeah... chicken coop. Doesn't sound appetizing, but it was good. Have to give them a star for their unique entree names. =) Also give their egg scramblers a try.
(4)Sandra M.
nice location but average food, nothing amazing.
(2)P L.
This place is overrated. Food is just OK.
(2)Jackie T.
This is a small, casual place for breakfast or lunch. The service is sometimes slow, but the food is worth the wait. Try the blackberry biscuits. Served piping hot, they are to die for. I am a fan of their french toast. I recommend ordering something from their special menu - always a delightful culinary surprise.
(4)Laura L.
Great little local place for breakfast. They also serve lunch but I have never been there at lunch time. I like the easy going atmosphere. Everything I have had there has been great! If your looking for a step above your local pancake joint this is a great place to try something new.
(3)Justine D.
This place is not at all about the decor or ambiance; you come here for the food. There's great variety in their menu and I love their home fries. Parking can get a bit tight.
(4)Jeffrey A.
(3)Kaitlin M.
Bland... everything we ordered (5 different breakfast dishes for 5 people) was...

(5)Dan O.

(3)Keegan M.

(5)Kate R.
(4)Brandi F.
(4)Chris D.
Hell no!!
(1)Nancy E.
(5)T.J. G.
(4)Rebecca B.
Good grief.
(2)Senada C.
(5)Em D.

(4)Karina K.
(4)Ashley H.
(4)Lillian L.
(2)S H.
(5)Mary D.
Satisfied every time I come in here. Every single item is good on the menu. Thumbs up!!!!!!
(5)Jillian P.
I love this place for their skillets! I get the Roadster and it's so delicious that I'm craving one right now. Definitely the go to place for breakfast!
(1)Matthew P.
(4)Matt W.
Imagine Big Boy's refined older sister. The hot one in college who studied in France for a semester. That's this place.
(4)Matt M.

This place is overrated. Food is just OK.

Great little local place for breakfast. They also serve lunch but I have never been there at lunch time. I like the easy going atmosphere. Everything I have had there has been great! If your looking for a step above your local pancake joint this is a great place to try something new.

This place is not at all about the decor or ambiance; you come here for the food. There's great variety in their menu and I love their home fries. Parking can get a bit tight.
